The Toronto Blue Jays Are Fun Right Now

[Music] the Jessie Blake sports report with Jessie Blake I'm not going to sit here and pretend that this season hasn't been a complete Lost season for the Toronto Blue Jays and that they haven't fallen well short of expectations and we all thought they'd be a playoff team and they're not a playoff team and they traded everybody a month ago and all that miserable stuff that happened for the last few months but right now as I'm recording this the Toronto Blue Jays are a very fun baseball team and has been a lot of fun to watch the Blue Jays and I'm recording this after the historic game that they played against the Red Sox on Monday but in between the double header so the the SE the late game the normal game hasn't happened yet I'm recording in between the two games that they have today the one where Danny Jansen uh set made history by becoming the first player ever to play for both teams in one game we'll talk about that game a little later on but I want to work my way backwards from the Angels Series in Friday to today because on Friday we had a walkoff home run we actually in the ninth inning it was back-to-back solo shots Addison Barger and Joey L perfo went backto back in the bottom of the night to walk off the Blue Jays and that game was was special obviously for that having those kids have that moment there at the end in the Rogers Center that just adds to the excitement of the young guys coming in the future of the franchise and all that stuff but and and low pero had like a great catch in in left field too at in that game it was it was awesome what a moment for him but that game game was so special in my eyes because of how they won the game they were down 40 in the second inning and if you've watched the Blue Jays for the last like two years you know that this team never comes back from Big leads they they don't do this they don't do this thing where they're down 40 in the second and they work their way back slowly in the game and then eventually they pull through and they they get the victory but that's what happened on Friday and understand the angels are a bad team but you got to do it against the good teams and the bad teams and having them have that Victory with the young kids getting the walk-off home run and comeback Victory where the pitching staff holds the line with the score you know they allowed a lot of runs early but they held it together and then the bats come alive throughout the game it's something the Blue Jays don't do and it was so much fun to see this team actually perform at that level and then on Saturday Saturday we get almost the second greatest pitching performance in Blue Jay's history because Dave Steve if you if you don't know holds the only no hitter in Blue Jays history we have a sad franchise record of guys falling just short of uh pitching a no hitter and it happened again on Saturday but it was so cool to have Bowen Francis have that almost no hitter he took it into the ninth inning and then he finally allowed a hit but bow in Francis from what he was at the beginning of the year to where he is now and and the pitching performance he's had in the last few weeks it's been spectacular and it gives you so much hope for the future and for Francis himself so so if you don't if you don't know if you weren't familiar if you weren't following along with Francis throughout the season coming out of spring training he was great fantastic and they gave him a shot in the starting rotation early in the year and they they tried him out and it didn't go well and eventually got pulled from that got put on IR got to regroup was in the pen for a little bit wasn't great in the pen but then they traded us Kikuchi then we had the big selloff last month and it's like okay season's lost let's give Bowen another chance let's let's give him something let's just try him out there's nothing to lose here and since that moment Francis has proven to be a Bonafide starter in the MLB he was Al player of the week last week um last three starts three and 0 82 ER 036 whip 070 batting average against 27 strikeouts last three starts the Jays had tweeted that out so I want to shout out batam Francis for his unbelievable work now with this start on Saturday probably should be Al player of the week again next week we'll see how that unfolds but shout out bad and Francis for that unbelievable and great moment he gave Blue Jays fans on Saturday and then on Sunday we get GS goes out there strikes out 10 batters in seven Innings allows one run and the Blue Jays kick their butts of the angels in an 8-2 Victory and that's a sweep that they had on the weekend against the angels and yes they are bad team but you got to beat the bad teams you got to beat the teams that are in front of you and then you go into Boston on Monday you're picking up this weird game Danny Jansen I it it adds for me this Danny Janson game where he's playing for both sides and having that blue jay that we all love like who out there didn't love Danny Jansen when he was a blue jay and his journey as a Jay and seeing him as a red sock it's really weird and I wish he was still a Jay but it is what it is I'm I'm happy that we were able to get some assets for him and all that but having Danny Jansen a part of this historic moment where he the this is a game that's being picked up from earlier in the season so he was on the Jays at the time and now he's going to be on the Red Sox catching for them so he played for both teams and he's the first player ever to play a game for both teams in a game which is really cool to see um that added to the excitement of of the Blue Jays coming off this sweep and then you go into this game and it's a historic game and the baseball world is watching it because we're baseball nerds and we love weird stats like this and this is a thing that can only happen in baseball so it's very exciting and the Blue Jays win they come out of that with a victory and out of that the player I want to talk about is Chad green because Chad green got the save in the game and Jordan Romano is injured so he hasn't been in the pen at all this season and Chad green has filled in and Chad green has been one of the brightest bright spots in this entire Blue Jays Team all season long and he's the only one who's like calm cool and collected on this team everybody else on this team is like high energy high fives jumping around home run jackets looking in the camera and Chad green just there like so mellow and that's what you want out of your your closer and right now having Chad green locked up for next season is is such a beauty that they didn't move him at the deadline it was it was an option it was on the table and they chose to keep him around and it looks like that was the right call and having romano and green for next season could be an unbelievable one-two punch so I'm really looking forward to that because Chad green has established himself and pro proven himself that he can be a lock down shutdown guy at the end of uh at the end of your relief P I don't want to call him the closer because Romano I don't think has lost his jaw but if he's the setup man to Romano now now we got an eight eighth inning and ninth inning guy that'll just like close out the game that's spectacular that's how you win baseball games so shout out Chad green uh for being a huge bright spot the entire season for the Blue Jays and lastly this the most fun part of this team I think the icing on the cake of everything is Vladimir Guerrero Jr who has been the second best third best hitter in Major League Baseball if you're going it's Aaron judge it's sh Otani next up is Vladimir Guerrero Jr who is like repeating his numbers from his almost 2021 MVP season where he was just beat out by shohi so vlat is back I don't know what happened in April like he just struggled for a month but since then he's been the number two best hitter in the American League and that that's absolutely spectacular for the future of the Blue Jays because now you have some security when you give him that big fat contract this offseason you know that you're you're not questioning it anymore like we got to just hey vlat is gonna turn even if he struggles early he's gonna turn it around he has it in him this dude is one of the best hitters in baseball and will be for a while and I full confidence in vlat and I hope they lock him up forever and just sidebar about vlat my favorite thing about vlat is the launch angle so so so ESPN did a feature on him uh re today actually I think it it just dropped and one of the things that they wrote in there that I thought was fascinating that you can see when you watch him hit it's his launch angle and it's that it's comically low for a power hitter I'll read this directly from the ESPN article on vlat they write Guerrero's launch angle is still still comically low for a power hitter 7.2 de down from 10.5° last year and ranked 129th among 136 qualified players but it hasn't mattered he's homering at a 7% rate since the start of June tied with Juan sto for six highest in the majors in that stretch and why I love the launch angle stat about vlat is that it shows to me the preciseness of the power in his swing in that he's hitting it exactly how you want to hit a ball like it's it and what I mean by that is that it's when you when you aim to hit something perfectly you'd hit it on a Laine drop that means the bat is square but he has so much power that he's hitting line drives out of the ballpark for home runs the dude is so unbelievable at hitting that these line drives get so much carry that they carry out of the ballpark that's what that's what I take away from that and that that launch angle stat because you can watch it when you watch vlat hit these home runs they're not towering shots they're not like Aaron judge where he hits pop flies that go 480 feet you know vlat is hitting these line drives that are like 420 and they're low and they're precise and they're so much velocity in his swing and vlat is the centerpiece of this team and it's so comforting that the guy you're going to build your franchise around for the next forever is this good at this moment in a Lost season so that's the last piece there on what I wanted to say oh and also sidebar shout out will Wagner will Wagner since he's come to the Blue Jays has been and up to the majors has been spectacular he he started off really hot and then now he's trailed off a bit I think his Opie his on base percentage is like 360 or something I don't actually have it right in front of me but Wagner's been great at the plate and he looks like he's got a spot in this team next season based on the way he's hitting right now and if he keeps it up through September that'll be something spectacular to watch and I got real no I got no real bones to pick with any of the trade deadline Acquisitions so far yarro I I I'm still doing the the shout outs Yar brro is this long relief gem that pitched in today's game that's just been a fantastic pickup from the Dodgers um that's just like free relief help that could definitely help this team next year so just only positive things for the Blue Jays right now I'm pumped about this team heading into September if they keep this up who knows what next season's Outlook will look like like maybe they get some confirmed pieces for the team next season there's a lot of stuff they got to do this off season but if they play really well that's where you want to start you want to you want to you don't want to end on a low you want to end on a high so right now we're at a high let's keep it up hopefully we get some better even better games in September and we keep this run rolling that's it for me right now I'm back from a little bit of vacay and it was fun to be back I was traveling the east coast of the United States I guess that's what you call it I was in like Massachusetts area Cape Cod uh Maine Portland Maine I went to a Portland Sea doogs game we're talking baseball here a lot of fun traveling uh the East Coast but
