Reaction: USMNT’s disappointing loss to Canada | SOTU

we come to you following the United States uh Canada game um yes a loss uh yes a result that is not good certainly not the end of the world uh initial thoughts are uh we can go crazy about this and we can say that this is yet another blemish on a team that has had a summmer worth of blemishes and failures and that this is problematic however I think that if you do take a step back and you recognize that there are good things to come in the form of a new coach in Marcio Postino he is not a magician but he hopefully will come in and will kick ass where it needs to be and pat on the back where it needs to be and get these players to play better and certainly better than what we saw today I think ultimately this performance was a pathetic and oftentimes apathetic type of performance uh of a group that I thought was going to kind of reignite that I thought was going to rebound after the summer and yet they looked lethargic they looked um rudderless and ultimately when it came to the this team whether it was coaching staff whether it was players whether it was anybody else time and time again I heard it's about results it's about results well this was a bad result Canada is a good team not a great team and even with the results that they had this summer at cop America this is still a team that this United States team at home should beat wasn't a great environment and I know people are talking about the crowd or the lack of crowd in Kansas City but guess what this is a team right now in its current form that does not deserve a big crowd that has not made us believe that they are worthy of our attention and of our time and of our heart and that is their job to win that back and today didn't help mossi uh initial thoughts on this game right at the outset there was a palpable intensity Gap uh it's one thing for us to talk about how this game doesn't matter because of the interim coach but you hope that doesn't filter down to the players and it seemed to because the US took the field as if this was a sparring session and Canada took the field as if this was a fight uh they had a strong lineup they have their coach Jesse Marsh in place they have a bit of a chip on their shoulder with regards to the US they wanted to prove they are the best team in Kaka that their semi-final run at the cop America was no fluke and so you could tell they were really into this they wanted the result and for the first hour so they played the US off the field absolutely deserving of their two-nil advantage it could have been more if not for some great Saves by Patrick schy and then it wasn't until the last half hour where I felt like the US woke up the subs helped uh obviously two of them Aid Morris and Luca delator combined on the goal Riot also provided a spark and finally in the last half hour or so we saw a game where the intensity sort of matched then you could tell that the US really wanted to try to salvage a draw as well well but yeah for the first hour so this was a very dispiriting performance like you said not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things but still very disappointing yeah Patrick Shelty I think is the only one that comes out of this uh looking better yes the subs did change you know Pepe missed an opportunity um you know ultimately Luca delator as a sub coming in and obviously getting the goal kind of just fell to him that's that's all fine and well but the damage was done and everything that said there mossi makes me and it saddens me that this is the way I feel about this team that this is this is a weak team this is a soft team and all of the talent that is on the field and at times having seen when they weren't soft that they weren't weak I don't know what has H happened to make them this soft but this was the last thing that I expected in this game from this team all right and it it's uh as I said not only is it maddening but it saddens me that this is the type of national team that came out today and on a day I thought it was going to be a whole lot better and you know it's disappointing well I mean pochettino is known for his team's playing a very intense pressing style so in that respect he might satisfy some of what you're yearning for um I don't think obviously he's going to want the team to be good with the ball but he's not a quote unquote a possession Zealot or a super romantic I think you know he's about getting results and and he's about first and foremost playing with intensity and pressing and lots of energy so I think he will bring that I I hope that he doesn't take this job without eyes wide open and and he seems like a smart guy and so he will have understood the realities of what he has and doesn't have what what I fear is that he gets into this and early on he says he turns around and looks and says oh my God I wanted to do this but there's not a chance in hell that I can do this and he has to Zig and zag I hope he would come in with realistic expectations of what is possible and what isn't and a good coach will be able to sus that out and and by the way that pep is a good coach and so pep could come into a situation even though he is the ultimate romantic and has more Talent to work with than maybe anybody in the history of the game in the places that he's been he's he can also be pragmatic he can also say while I may want to do this I can't do this and rather than be romantic and go down with the ship doing something that isn't going to work because I just don't have the players to do it I am going to adjust I think pochettino can do that what I don't want him to do is to be blindsided by that very quickly and to have gone down the road thinking he was going one way and now all of a sudden have to Pivot different way you like that clip well I like him out wide i think that's where he does his best work it's not that he can't play in the 10 and it's also not that when he even starts out wide he doesn't drift in and we've certainly seen that with the us but is this giving him too much responsibility and putting him in a place where he can't...
