🔴F1 Live : Dutch GP Qualifying - Commentary + Live Telemetry

no uh I need to see where that's at and whether he's still getting a real one but uh it was cool I knew that a tattoo was off off the cards for a long time so I had to think of something else he's applying some some pressure I'm trying to resist I'm hoping he forgets but these racing drivers don't forget anything you know to to say we're contending for a championship was not something we were thinking of probably in the beginning of the year but um we've done such a good job and I'm very proud of of the whole team and what we've been able to achieve so far it just shows what progress this great team has has made all the work that the men and women at McLaren have done just very very happy for everybody but of course for myself to have that first one on the board is a a very special feeling it's taken a lot of hard work uh we know how quickly the sport moves so we need to continue to push very hard the turnaround has been incredible but now we're in we're in the deep end and we're fighting the the big teams and the the smarter people and um we've had to take a step up as a whole team and I think uh honestly we we've done that and uh we're fighting well it's a great thing to be a part of I think a nice boost for the whole team you know of course for Lando getting his first win for me getting my first win and having a onew for the team on Merit I know we had a onew a few years ago as a team but to do it purely on on performance and Pace uh I think for everybody that's a very satisfying thing to be part of and and you know a great show of everybody's hard work I think it's exciting for the fans you've got four teams that you are capable of winning any weekend so you know stay tuned I think 10 more very exciting races the second half of the [Music] year uh lovely uh package there Laurence must have been great fun to go down to the F what did you get from the vibe down there do do do you feel they feel they can win the constructor's championship just so much confidence well like Zach Andrea when they were talking to the factory when they were addressing them they were oozing confidence cuz I think they genuinely feel like they're in the fight Lando said there that they're in the Deep End right now they are and they are trying to adjust to it and they're making a few mistakes here and there but actually they've only just been fine near the front I think they feel like they can take the fight in the Constructor Championship they favorites now that's how they feel and this is a team that was Plum last 18 months ago like bottom of the barrel now with the fastest car in the sport and in the hunt for the Constructor Championship Ruth had they made different decisions in the early half of the Year potentially different strategic decisions could McLaren actually be leading the Constructors Championship right now do you know I haven't run the numbers but I guess it would be pretty close wouldn't it in terms of and if you project the closing rate which I believe is 8.3 points per race since Monaco that one I do have the numbers for um it's going to get pretty spicy with a with a good few number of rounds to go and also the fact that Mercedes are now very much in the hunt of the last four Grand Prix of course every Victory taken by either a McLaren or a Mercedes driver Max toppen and Red Bull have not been on the top step of the podium uh now for four races Mercedes getting in the mix too means it's going to be even harder for Red Bull to get themselves uh into the mix Lawrence we've got a fantastic battle shaping up for this second half of the Season 10 races to go so much still on the line even the drivers World Championship but I think Red Bull might be happy that actually there is a bit more of a fight between the teams that are trying to chase them because they're almost taking points of each other McLaren have a good weekend Mercedes have a good weekend but there is no doubt that if they operate as that four pack of four those four cars those two teams I think the the threat is real for the constructors the drivers it looks trickier but it only takes one dnf doesn't it from that yeah and it suddenly becomes a wide open race uh Ruth we arrive here at zanard and of course qualifying just around the corner how key is traffic going to be How likely is it that we could lose somebody unexpected early on in the session if they don't get their timing right if they do get caught out in traffic yeah huge we still have this narrow pit Lane even though they have extended it by 16 m in terms of the spacing when you have 20 cars all queuing or 19 depending if Logan makes it out or not it's a 70-second track which means pretty much everybody always has traffic all the time timings are absolutely key here and there's always a tradeoff especially with the track that is being robbed in even if it's dry with setting it not too early so that you don't catch someone going rather late Lawrence who's your pick today Oscar I think Oscar's going to do it I think he's got the edge there at McLaren I think he's got the edge on Lando I think he's going to do it fascinating stuff Ruth for you I I I think potentially Oscar too but I always go for the home favorites I'm going to have to go for Max uh I think it could be Lando so uh I think yeah McLaren or the home Hero Let's have a little uh little look I'm just hearing actually that Logan Sergeant's car we see it right now the job the Williams F1 team have done on that car uh it doesn't look too far away from actually being able to roll out 4 q1 and if that does happen an absolutely astonishing job from all down at Williams James F saying it was a very very tall order to have got that done in under two hours what a job from William F1 Logan Sergeant hoping to go out for q1 incredible incredible what they're able to do well that's it then folks qualifying just around the corner here in zanol for the Dutch Grand Prix as Formula 1 gets back to racing ways in this 2024 World Championship who will finish the hour on top will it be the home hero Max with stappen will it be McLaren will it be anybody else we're about to find out uh with your commentary team of Alex Jak jolian Palmer and David kard enjoy qualifying here e say goodbye to the summer break and say hello to zanor e banks of the North Sea we are ready for a lap of attack from all the drivers potentially all of the drivers in the field Williams have really been working incredibly hard out there in the commentary box I'm Alex Jakes delighted to be joined by both David kard and jolian Palmer as we resume this battle to win the constructors and drivers championships of the world DC ready and raring to go I assume absolutely what a great circuit I don't mind the fact that we've had rain we've had Sun we've had red flags I think this is form for 1 it's the ultimate Challenge this is an old school Racetrack and you make a slight error then it will suck you into the barrier so um let's see now bright Sunshine looks like we're going to have a completely dry qualifying so it'll be the battle of the outright performance it's been a stop start weekend so far with three hours of practice this morning's hour of practice was pretty much a write off for uh for everyone with wet conditions barely any laps and it was certainly a right off for Logan Sergeant who demolished his car if Williams can get him back in that'll be a staggering achievement from them but what it does mean is we've got a very interesting qualifying coming up because no one has done a dry lap today and even then the conditions are changing all the time the wind direction it's still howling out there and there's a 40% chance of rain well this is where I think when you mentioned the fact they haven't done a dry lap this is where confidence and commitment come through and the guy that's on the back foot in terms of outright performance as we see that sizable incident from Lo Sergeant this was a bit sloppy unfortunately riding it out onto the grass and I can only imagine he taking his eye off the road to not see that the black was turning to green and you know it's sort of what you learn in early stages of your racing career wet grass is very slippy it's a very similar shunt to what he had in uh in Suzuka last year where he ran the curb and then the curb turned to grass and he kept his foot in and did a a load of damage he was obviously feeling that one as well so even if the car is put together he he's got to then jump in and deliver a very quick lap time despite having a bit of a confidence knock from uh from that one so tricky one for sergeant regardless but it will nonetheless be uh be great credit to Williams if he's even out there competing earlier on in free practice that was the main headline and it was a lot of work for Williams to get done to try and get two cars into the session earlier on though we did see Pierre gazley top the session Kevin Magnuson was second vry botas was in third but it was a flurry of laps at the end not really representative to go back to fp2 the order there slightly more instructive George Russell ahead of Oscar pastri then Lewis Hamilton Lando Norris and Max aaen who has been the dominant driver here in taking pole positions and Grand Pre wins since his circuit returned to the Formula One calendar slightly on the back foot but only 2/10 down on the best Mark set by George Russell that's your form guide going in to this qualifying out power of the hand as the number one mechanic there holds 1,000 horses back that's the power stance isn't it the power stance of the mechanic did it very well I have to say that was uh they must have a sort of Team school for right this is your role and this is your position ever since the chap at Ferrari got famous on social media they've all started posing for fun out there we have a green light at the end of the pit Lane we are back underway for Formula 1 qualifying but no takers at the moment we had 18 minutes on the clock we will lose lose are five slowest competitors and uh we will see whether there is any participation for both Williams but for the moment a driver who has really struggled to Simply slow the car across the course of the weekend earlier in the season back-to-back six places means that Nico hulkenberg was earlier in the season in the best form of his Formula 1 career since 2018 for gentlemen it's been a bit of a haphazard weekend so far for a driver who's so experienced yeah I haven't seen any official U narrative from the the team as to whether there's been an issue with the braking system but it it looks as if something was not talking to the driver he's not a rookie by any stretch and he was been caught out did have been damage to the front Wing just coming up to this section here 12 and 13 actually saw him at breakfast and he was going well it was a pretty bad Friday I'm hoping for a better Saturday and it didn't start particularly well he nosed it into the barrier there pretty much first flying lap you thought he's w driver that really needs a clear run so straight out onto circuit is hulkenberg and we've got what eight cars onto track the Williams the saers the Aston Martins going early as well the alpines and the hascar they've got the potential for three runs by going this early the rest of the field waiting in the pits for now but these guys obviously uh worried about making it through into Q2 so they're going early yeah track will be a little bit green as the expression we use as we see the plank dragging on the underside of that house that was the The Telltale smoke you see it's sparking its way through there we saw some smoke coming from the cockpit um prior to that from Max F staffen that's just the dry ice evaporating the corpit to keep the driver cool no air conditioning of these cars of course and although the weather has been a little bit wet and windy when the sun's out which it is now it's pretty warm here big correction as he stood on the throttle for hulkenberg out of turn 10 where he's been off now into the Apex of 11 where puddles have been catching all week long but we have a dry circuit and out there at the moment track temperature 30° air temperature is 24 the wind is an issue Joe guu has been told about that by his race engineer that is the bank turn 14 and hulkenberg who has won here in every single category he's ever competed in apart from Formula 1 has a great Junior record around here and finds himself with the fastest time at the moment having completed a clean lap Joe Gru has gone into second as others pour out onto the circuit Magnus and Alonzo theast both Ferraris and Checker Sergio cles has just headed out as well so Carlos SS is another man as we're riding on board with him nose cam launching into a flying lap he's another man who might be feeling a bit more pressure now it's dried out because he didn't get a clear run in yesterday's Drive practice he's hasn't really turned a wheel on a dry circuit here so he's gone out slightly earlier than some just to try and get a feel for the conditions and give himself a bit more of a buffer for not feeling particularly comfortable with their car either the CLA got them back to a a pole position and a podium in Spar but they've not been feeling at ease with the other car and as mentioned signs down on mileage here he comes up towards Sky flag love this corner yeah absolutely fantastic roller coaster raid of RAC track and yeah that Ferrari just not seeming to give the drivers the confidence um a lot of lower speed medium speed Corners that you could to piece together as well as that fantastic fast section at the back of the lab and long turns as well where you're sitting on the tire for quite a long time so using all of the carb on the exit we'll get an opportunity to see science this will be very much a sort of Banker lap see where the car is what can it give me caros signs decent form around this circuit in the three Dutch Grand Prix we've had since it returned to the calendar in Formula One always in the top five but he's never been on the podium around this circuit had the form against his teammate in a wet dry session here last year in the qualifying hour but he goes behind the two alpines behind Fernando Alonzo Kevin Magnuson now Sergio Perez who has gone into third Lance stroll currently quickest is 300s of a second ahead of Alexander Alban from one Ferrari to the second this is charir who is finding himself with not much to do apart from go up through the gears take it across the line and he registers the third fastest time slightly more promising than signs his lap as pastri in the McLaren good form in the dry session that we had yesterday continues that with the fastest time 1115 for past good opening laps from Stoll and Alvin though aren't they second and third and ahead of lir and Perez and Alonso further down as well so stoll's really done a decent opener the times of course will tumble as they always do particularly at this stage in qualifying as the track rubbers in and we because it's been wet there's really no rubber down at all so a lot of drivers fighting the wheel even some of the best out there and Norris was happy with his McLaren yesterday felt comfortable in all conditions he's going to get a Time on the board fantastic to see the commitment around the wide line before we get into this section and uh absolutely flat through here flat up over the rise but it it's just that little feeling in your stomach and this is the corner really where you've got to have belief got to have confidence race car produces a lot of downforce at speeds so you can have uh you be pretty committed on the turn in yeah loads of under steer at turn nine he hustled it through the previous Corners 78 and N consecutive right handers this is a scruffy lap in fact for Norris as he struggles for traction out of 10 but you slow down through those right handers the first one is full commitment and then you scrub a little bit for for turn eight turn nine starts to get medium speed and turn 10 the left has been low grip all weekend and that's where Lando was uh was fighting the car there on the exit sweeps through the final corner will open DRS through the AR liony fed the final turn and across the line he goes to go just behind Lewis Hamilton who uh and 2,000 of a second between Hamilton and Norris Hamilton the most recent winner of a Formula 1 grand prix after his teammate was disqualified in Belgium this was a moment coming out of turn 10 fando Norris that really shows how low grip it was because the corner before he was under Ste he almost washed straight off the corner the next Corner turn 10 so he got the right hand washing T he's turning it but then struggling for rear grip that'll be the effect of the Wind on the car so one corner he can't get the front in the next one the rear is coming around on him and it looks Scrappy but yet his 2,000 of the best time so everyone is fighting the car alot yeah definitely as you said there'll be Improvement during this session another 10 minutes to go we cut to images of his father watching the TV screen and the lap on fold and he had a face like a child have been told he had to go to bed he look so disappointed I want to stay up and uh he'll you'll I think be reasonably encouraged with the fact that uh as everyone has pretty much part from ven had an opportunity to have their first Banker lap then McLaren as we expected are in the hunt and Max is stpp on an outl at the moment gearing up for his first flyer in q1 just looking to book his place in the next part of qualifying the top 15 will do that currently Daniel Ricardo is finding himself in that place but we've yet to see uh a second effort from Carlos as Alex Alan in the Williams goes through the corners where his teammate crashed earlier on and we go visor cam as he attacks on personal best sector one for the tie driver let's have a fun ride then through these fast middle sector Corners this is turn nine when Norris was under steering wide on the exit Alvin's got the other problem trying to fight the rear of the car with poor traction and then once again look that's a Williams also struggling for rear grip the grip level's going to come up and up he's are the early LS the driv is really having to work slow it down then through turn 11 that brings you straight into turn 12 in a long 180° Corner that you quickly out of picks up a sniff of a sliter from charlot Clair and he's into the final corner where you can run too wide out on that double stretch of curb and do damage to the under the side of the car albin's neat and tidy opens the DRS and finds himself across the line with no improvement on the board stays in fifth position V botas moves up but only to 16th Place Max a staff and going very quickly in the first part lap middle sector though he's finding himself in a rears to Lewis Hamilton yeah no big surprise that he's good in that first sector in many ways uh the commitment that he needs especially at that high speed part of the lap is never in question with him but maybe the deficiencies of the balance that they have from the car right now is showing in the middle and end of the lap good enough for third for Max stapen whose first flying lap in q1 puts him ahead of one McLaren behind the other and behind his old rival leis Hamilton they did the fastest first sector by quite a long way and then dropped even more time in the middle sector there so big trade-off for V staffen in the first sector to the middle sector where this fast corner is see the scraping of the floor for Carlos SS through Sky Flack fastest corner on the circuit at turn seven yeah that's yes he hasn't uh well no one's done any dry running um so there'll be fresh planks and lots of overseer coming off that slow speed corner so they'll be sort of Shaving things down through this qualifying session this is where the cars run lightest and fastest so yes you uh you don't quite have the same mechanical weight in the car but you're going a bit faster so you get a bit more downforce but doesn't look really settle the Ferrari yeah they had a tough practice Friday is it going to be a continuation only 12th position for Carlos signs who did lose that track time he's ahead of p g hulkenberg and Yuki soda who is the final driver progressing as it stands and we have under 7 and 1 half minutes to go the driver who is on the podium here last year with a superb Drive in mixed conditions Pierre gazy goes into Fifth and no improvement overall for Joe guu driver trying to put himself in the frame to stay in Formula 1 there are very few seats remaining this man's place next year in the Alpine team will be taken by Jack Duan who's been promoted as man oon is heading to has this is George Russell his contract goes to the end of 2025 he's up to Ninth at the moment ahead of Sergio Perez but behind charl lir first driver out in this session was hulkenberg trying to get a feel trying to get a balance trying to get a rhythm he goes ahead of Alexander Alin up to seventh position it's a second set of tires for ni hulkenberg there and he's managed to learn a little bit on the first set put on some fresh rubber found the grip and he's up into the top seven of course top 15 where you need to be right now Sergeant still hasn't made it out so four will go at the moment that's Sergio Perez coming across Lewis Hamilton not happy and race control have noted it for potentially impeding yeah look In fairness I think he's got a point that part of the the corner there naturally you flow out you can see to the Carib is where the line the drivers would normally take that's well out of his way you know what it's like you know what it's like if you just don't feel that you can run the car as wde it just compromises you it does but it I don't think leis could have had to drive in the grass to get further off the road could have gone faster it's got a fast pedal it's called the throttle yeah he's on the radio immediately knowing you would be complaining if that was me and you were on a lap you'd go what the hell was he doing Palmer complaining not a chance not a chance it's a pivotal moment that in q1 because leis Hamilton Mercedes a resurgent he's currently top of the pile what's going on low grip slide all over the place and that is a frantic message from George Russell uh who was in the mix of Victory disqualified after he' taken the top step and lifted the trophy in Belgium but he's a driver who's been on pole position already this year has a victory in Austria to his name after Norris and vastaan came together but there was a there was a hint of panic in that radio message yeah that's never a nice feeling is it you want the first run to just be a confidence Builder and he's not that far away but in modern Formula 1 half a second could see you struggle to make it through yeah half a second difference so his teammate is under investigation but it is at the top of the times and feeling the grip and George who was okay in practice he was top in practice yesterday but he's not feeling the same sensation he's been out there for a couple of flying laps he's down in 10th position so you got Russell in danger he's only got couple attent back to the Drop Zone with Daniel Ricardo now in in 16th science is obviously in big danger there in 15th as well and Perez who didn't get that second lap in down in 11th and needs an improvement we're looking at Lance stroll who has a couple of Corners to go on this push lap the Aston Martin driver currently in sixth position no improvement in the middle part of the lap but the middle sector is distinct compared to sector 1 and sector 3 and you can see that's where they've geared the car that's where they've biased the setup and it's good enough in the first and third sectors to represent an overall Improvement personal best for the Canadian driver to take him up to Fourth his teammate Fernando Alonzo great record around here always uh competing in the top six since this circuit three grand prix here since it rejoined the calendar Fernando Alonzo's always been in the top six included a last lap pass around the outside of Tarzan Corner uh in 2021 so he's got former round here he's going to try and prove it in the final three minutes eliminated at this stage would be Daniel Ricardo Yuki sonoda the two salvas and no time or appearance for Logan Sergeant after his enormous accident in fp3 stroll up to Fourth hulberg seventh gazley in sixth position that gives you an indication of where the times are going to fall out really for this final run anyone below that is going to be in trouble if they don't improve that includes even Charlotte Clair in ninth position and even the likes of hulberg have got another set of tires to go on as of gazley queuing up there yeah it's not so so critical is it in dry conditions losing a bit of temperature from the tires um very high minimum pressures that pelli stipulate you saw when it was uh wet earlier out in the intermediates they're desperately trying to keep Tire temperature once you drop out in the wed it's very difficult but yeah I'm a little bit surprised at the uh the V carbs um I thought their practice was looking a bit stronger than that unless they both had the same sort of issue um and they're certainly evenly matched within a well actually on the same tenth so um they'll be hoping for a big step forward right now maxen currently in third position going again and finding himself into turn one this undulating circuit but stappen has been The Benchmark around this circuit constantly taking the win here since this circuit that he brought back to the calendar with his success in Formula 1 and had a place where he has been dominant he's looking to book his place into the top 15 15th Place at the moment occupied by Carlos SS who is the lead Ferrari on the grid here one year ago he's hoping for no improvement for the four drivers behind we already know that Logan Sergeant will not be taking part in this session Visa cam the world championship leader fighting the cast still yeah that was Telltale saying sawing at the wheel that he's nervous of the rear on entry and it looked to me and then that crossover on power that's what we've been seeing from number of drivers on the exit of six and I had a feeling that it looked like he just wasn't quite as hooked up through Tarzan as well so this is not he's aborted he's given it he going to spin on the entry there to to turn 11 he did that in in practice in the damn conditions but the car's so loose on him this is a a scrub set of soft tires Max should be safely through up in third position looks like he's going to pit H slowly so over the line goes Joe guu he improves his lap time not his position could his teammate change that his teammate does get out of the Drop Zone big pressure now on caros sence who Falls to 16th position this is Kevin Magnuson in 12th Place as it stands make that sixth fastest final sector of anyone so far as Magnuson gives himself a great chance of making it out of q1 lir Russell Perez Alonso and SS let's not forget who is actually in the drop zone as we pick him up here heading down towards turn seven all under pressure with the way the field is in 2024 you've got to be hooking it up because anyone can knock out anyone in q1 and so there's big names under pressure immediately yeah signs what four1 down and the comparison to the best which has just happened so not a wonderful beginning to the lap so SS fighting the car as he moves onto the back straight here out of turn 10 heading down to the chicane and then the change of Direction that takes you to the two final corners on the racetrack it doesn't look dialed in but can signs find an improvement when it matters currently in the drop zone along with estan oon along with the two salvas who are still competing in this session checker flag is out signs needs a step forward Alonzo's gone to Fourth position Carlos SS comes across the line can he get ahead and he can to demote Perez into the Drop Zone another fastest final sector to the surprise of the gentleman alongside me where where did that final sector come from did he not have it switched on at the beginning of the lap I thought he might have been under pressure for the bottom five and he went to the top spot that's how much the track is coming towards them now andair goes into second position so it's about your timing as you come over the line and now Russell has a chance to go fastest and does so track really rubbering in aggressively as we make our way through this session currently in the drop zone needing a clean lap needing an improvement a man fighting for his Formula 1 future even though he's got a 2-year contract serg Perez coming across the line and he goes fastest as well Perez Russell signs an A and Sergeant going from towards the bottom straight to the top we're left with Red Bulls Mercedes Ferraris and mcclaren's towards the top end so the cream Rose to the top and if you missed out on that final lap you were destined to be going out and that's what happened to Daniel Ricardo that didn't improve Joe guu finds himself out once again esan Aon is out in q1 at zanol for the second year in a row Daniel Ricardo another driver fighting for his formul one future there are plenty of drivers who could find themselves in that red bull or RB setup but he falls at the first hurdle along with okon and the two Salas botas and Joe also trying to fight to stay in in that seat they had a management change at salba will become Ali and the Finish driver VRI botas is 18th Joe is 19th let's hear from Mo I don't know what's going on but something's going on in this session guys car is a disaster since the beginning of the weekend that is a man leaving Alin and heading to H uh for next season and you get the feeling that the oon radio messages might be well the pill is not going to be sugared as we get towards the end of the season yeah he knows that his future lies elsewhere you understand the frustration but uh as I learned early in my career you you've got to be specific if you're going to give feedback it's like am I lacking overall grip is it front is it rear Adrian yui would always ask once You' stopped your monologue of complaints you'd go what do you need to go faster and um yeah when you just give a critique like that it's very easy for the engineers to get on the radio and say okay everybody a little bit less disaster please because what what else can you do with that information just following up uh the turn n incident involving Hamilton and Perez it was noted and there was no further update uh the stewards are posting their standard message about everyone following uh failing to follow the race directors maximum Delta time but there's mitigating circumstances in that and uh and it doesn't often result in a penalty only under a red flag with niik hulkenberg because that resulted in a penalty since that rule was brought in basically to stop them going slowly out on the the circuit let's check in with Sam Collins after that q1 session that's P1 through Q2 yeah but we waste a set so please yeah we for wor than that was that I been final so I don't expect any less yeah we control what we control it has been reported well some Lively radio communications down there at Red Bull look we saw a really strange session in q1 just there the times the track Evolution was super super high in fact it's still going to go even higher because the teams are still nowhere near the pace that they were setting in free practice 2 the only dry session we've had this weekend and that means there's going to be a huge scramble to get out of the pits at the end of the Q2 session because the track is going to be getting faster and faster and faster and that's why some drivers we heard the radio message from estban okon though they have had a disaster all weekend we have had some messages from drivers complaining about how the cars feel how they're handling that's because the track is evolving and the cars aren't set up for the track as it is now they're set up as the track for as it will be later today and into tomorrow so the cars are doing slightly odd things and the drivers are getting caught out that will be a challenge but as they all rush out of the pits towards the end of the Q2 session you're going to see a big queue of cars coming out of the pit Lane now the drivers are really backing each other up at the pit X exit line they're not allowed to mess around once they cross that line and come out of the pits and go out onto track but they are going to be fighting for track position and whoever leaves the pit last and starts their lap last assuming there's no yellow flags or red flags or any other inter interactions they don't make a mistake on their lap they will get the fastest lap because of that track Evolution still at least six or S10 of track Evolution still to come and you can see this que on your screen that we saw in q1 is going to be a shorter queue but just as difficult in Q2 Alex I think you're going to see some really Lively action and some unhappy racing drivers at the end of this session thank you Sam uh cars are beginning to queue up at the end of the pit Lane we got a green light at the end of the pit Lane and the pit lanee is then being closed let's get the thoughts of Ruth busam Dy on a interesting q1 session yes exactly and with just8 seconds covering that top 15 track Evolution was so high it was about 400s a minute so about 7 10th in total across that session which is why you were seeing cars pop up right to the very top uh right at the end of that session but I guess what you really want to know is who's going to be on pole and the thing is is that it is still way too close to call so comparing guys on the same track on the same Tire looking at the McLaren versus Mercedes versus max battle they were separated by 200s but that didn't tell the whole story Red Bull are struggling massively on the straights they are 17th fastest losing 46 seconds to Lewis but they have highspeed Advantage with Max 18 kph faster than Lewis in that Sky flag turn 17 H green light at the end of the pit Lane Q2 is underway and we are beginning the outlasts I I think they accidentally put the green light on at the end of the pit lane and then realized what they' done corrected it and we've again our outlasts as the Ferraris make their way out onto the circuit uh having had a bit of a stressful session with Carlos SS and not exactly many takers at the start of this second part of qualifying so it's two sets of tires for both Ferraris to jump up the order it was two sets of ties for George Russell to get himself out of trouble as well and we heard the radio from uh from czecho two set of ties for Sergio Perez as well and he was not happy with uh Hamilton's impeding incident and that's what he's is saying should be penalized with that it was one set of ties for both McLarens for Hamilton and for ven so they will have an advantage now going through the rest of qualifying they'll have an extra set probably for a q through attack at Pole Position yeah just all confidence building isn't it if you if you're starting to feel the car under you you know that there's going to be a step change not only from the the evolution you've seen from your competitors but um just your own confidence and knowledge when you start having those extra new set of tires they're like gold dust aren't they new set of tires to a race driver that gives you a little boost of optimism and opportunity that all your problems will disappear in a blaze of brilliant lap tank I don't think there's a better feeling in racing than sticking on a new set of boots when the track evolution is like that and you go through every single corner and you're just feeling well that was hooked up you come to the next one wow that was hooked up and every single one you just start eating into the lap time and it just comes aivee for you yeah I wonder what would be a sort of everyday experience for our audience that would compare if any of them ski I guess it would those days where you beautiful snow a gol for it would be every every drive and Putt is just on point but those two examples too for me at least where you do a drive or a shot in golf and you're like well that was hooked up that was hooked up oh no we're in the trees between the sand dudes we see the Ferraris out on circuit at the moment car oh my word Carlos s Gathering it together it's still not dialed in to the Circuit he was out qualified by charir at the last grand three before that he was the lead Ferrari on the grid for four races in a row but he's got a fight in his hands to continue that sort of form the dri who is heading to Williams had a choice of three different teams between Alpine between saber and Williams and he went for Williams they're delighted to have secured his signature and S will be hoping as better to come for Ferrari or otherwise it could be a long Sunday afternoon in the return of Formula 1 when we run the Dutch Grand Prix to 72 laps tomorrow charlot Clair is ahead by less than 2/10 of a second used tires on both Ferraris at this stage so they're continuing on the set they used right at the end of q1 trying to hold something back for later in the session it's going to mean that those times will not be all that great when everyone else Chucks on the the new boots and it did also mean that caros SS had this Whopper of a snap it always looks a bit more uh dramatic from the outside doesn't it yeah well that would have got his attention a lot more if it was Monte Carlo or Baku and there was a barrier tenis all over the [Music] place but when you got a healthy dose of steering lock on and then you're trying to accelerate that mass that's when you're going to use lot of the electrical energy then sometimes you can get that swapper and not having fresh tires certainly doesn't help that got well out the throttle with it as well to make sure he saved himself for another day Oscar pastri left the pit Lane along with hulkenberg Alvin and Magnus next in the queue this driver Max dappen World Championship leader starts his 200th Grand Prix tomorrow uh still R IND the year uh that's correct so that's why there's quite the queue heading out onto track and why theen is out on a new set of tires straight away it's got overcast and there's some really d dark clouds coming in above us yeah the wind is just constant isn't it so uh there's some definitely some speed about the clouds as they pass so no chances being taken yeah last year when were in this commentary Box covering the Dutch Grand Prix which they all lined up on the grid and it was like the weather was on Fast Forward uh making uh the conditions very tricky out there and so these are crucial laps we weren't expecting at the start of the qualifying hour any rain to interfere with grip conditions until potentially the end maybe even we' need a delay maybe a red flag to get the heavy rain but everyone just being wary because of the weekend that we've had just getting out there and we're looking at Oscar piastri one of our seven different winners of the season so far visibly lower through the bank turn there what would be your thoughts on that just not quite the confidence to run it so high I don't know if that's to try and get a mid Corner gain dropping down the banking but problem is then you start to lose out when you come over the crest of it on the exit and it's a substantial run up to turn seven it's all flat out through those Kinks and Crest up towards seven they really high speed corner he quick through the first sector pastri with it so laying down a marker early on as the teams go out with the threat of rain in the air we heard that communication between race engineer and Max aaen Oscar pastri fastest sector one and sector but he was at the head of his que so everyone will have a chance to respond very strong first part of the lap once again to Max Sten as you would expect 110 55 the time to beat from piastra yeah Mighty and that for sector signs was an outl but he seems to got well out of it and that allows Max look at the under steer there as well I wonder if the wind is playing a part in that corner as well just try to see if our track map uh gives an indication cuz everyone seems to be quite lazy on what is a fairly straightforward I'd say low to medium speed uh Corner this is on board with Max Sten his teammate wasn't happy with the potential impeding earlier on was frustrated that he had to take a new set and go again Staffing trying to keep this wonderful run going but he's behind the McLaren of Oscar pastri on that effort the top 10 booking their place in Q3 and McLaren have put both cars in that Q3 session at every single Grand Pre weekend so far this year they are one and two in the order once again an updated McLaren their first chunky update uh since Miami when they transformed their season and they've been in the mix for Grand Prix Victory pretty much all the way since they brought that first update of the season mlar one and two at the moment this is the second reped Bo of Sergio Perez about to put his time on the board and he slots in into fifth position behind Lance stroll Maxa and Oscar past and our fastest driver at the moment Lando no well about the maybe a little bit closer than Jak has been on average to Max but having seen a little bit of Max's on board looking at the Gap I'm going to assume there's a bit more to come if he can get a cleaner lap but that's uh still great confidence boosting surf for the McLaren both drivers able to just like clockwork deliver top times within 9,000 at the top spot Russell gets half a tenth away with the best final sector Hamilton slightly a drift of his teammate through the first two sectors and he's a drift at the end of the lap as well Hamilton who is 104 down in the qualifying head-to-head at the start of this session 15th Grand Prix of the Year Grand Prix at the moment caros SS will be slightly concerned about making the final part of qualifying he's gone out again after that early CER on the used tires he's in ninth position this is his teammate Charla Clair on the podium last time out in Belgium after George Russell was disqualified his first Podium since he won his home race in Monte Carlo he's sixth fastest as it's a McLaren one two 6 and A2 minutes to go in the drop zone as it stands Magnuson gazley Coda hulkenberg and the man who was fourth on the grid here really impressive performance one year ago from Alex alurn but only p15 at this stage of the weekend just ferari now with a new tire time on the board as well and SS just creeping into the top 10 so it really isn't looking like an easy weekend for him he was always going to be on the back foot missing the one dry practice session yesterday with a gearbox issue you try and make up for that especially when you're in a Ferrari and you get a chance to go through to Q2 and possibly Q3 and try and H small differences on the car but you lose the chance to have a big overnight change if you're not happy with it on a Friday you can make much bigger changes now it's just subtle tweaks that the team can do and you're really locked into s of part for it is so very tight when we get to this stage of a weekend Q2 into Q3 with the change of wind direction the change of wind speed the fact that we've had mixed conditions across the weekend are you consciously thinking in the cockpit at this stage about where the grip is or is it just pure Instinct how is that challenge for a driver well in certainly in my experience I feel that it's you've got to be conscious of what you're doing you've got to you've got to say that's where I believe the car will stick and that's where my limit is because otherwise you're just rolling the dice and that would seem like something you may do it on your very last run but suddenly when you're trying to build into the last part of qualifying you've got to be building on that experience and knowledge yeah you're building up a back catalog of data aren't you for yourself really every lap you're thinking okay that was where I can break for this corner maybe I can try something different on that corner maybe the next time I can go slightly wider in the banking or something like that and occasionally you'll find that a gust of wind this point will put you off but more likely with the way the wind's been so far you're getting the same effects at the same corners and there are countless tools that the drivers can do from the cockpit as well there's diff settings differential settings brake settings overrun settings there's loads that the drivers can play with to actually change the setup of the car subtly from corner to corner so not only you thinking how to drive it you're thinking how to set it up with every LP that you do as well yeah the little graphic there before telling us that Fernando Alonzo took his first Victory 21 years ago there was much less the driver could actually influence during the the qualifying lap other than pure driving now as uh Julian's just explained they've got tools at their disposal on their steering wheels to to adjust and play around and break balances a much bigger influence than it used to be as well you can literally go corner by corner now it helps if there's some straight line in between to actually press the buttons on the steering wheel rather than flashing through so a bit harder on this circuit but yeah for small subtleties that come in like the wind changing under steer one corner over steer in another there is plenty that you can do to just help mitigate those losses okay crucial moment of the weekend is upon us in front of a rockus crowd we have to decide our top 10 for the shootout later on and we've got to crawl out of the pit Lane but this is going to be so important now Magnuson gazley Coda hulkenberg and Alburn all looking for laps to try and displace a big name looks good for Aston Martin in context of the rest of their season there in the mix Lance stroll ahead of Fernando alono as it stands remember we're going to reset these times when we get to Q3 but who will be in Q3 signs on the back foot there's plenty of drivers back has seem to have the form of the rhythm of the two pass drivers across the course of the weekend so far but it's hulkenberg who has been the dominant driver in that head-to-head battle hulkenberg heading to saber for next year he's 113 up on in the head-to-head battle Yeah just looking at those that are outside the top 10 that could pull a lap then hulkenberg is that guy based on previous form but he's he's had a much trickier weekend than uh I can remember this year so SS is clearly vulnerable but we know that there's a little bit of performance gain he can make there um toh to L Clair it's pretty tight isn't it it's uh who is going to be the big scalp that doesn't make it through it well we've got so many contenders we had a real statistical anomaly top 10 in the last Grand Prix after Russell was disqualified all Grand Prix winners which is the first time in the history of the championship that that was the case uh it's a very very talented field and going early to try and get that lap in a driver who finished P3 with his performance here last year Pierre gazi the sole remaining Alpine driver he will remain with the team he'll have a new teammate for next year the Australian driver Jack Duan will join him that was a big news yesterday that he will be behind the wheel of the car they're promoting someone from the academy are we going to see Pi gazy promote himself into the top 10 there's the adjustments that DC and Jolan were telling you about a few moments ago gazley changing the performance of his car looking for an improvement we know that the track rub is in we've seen a personal best through the first sector from the Frenchman his first sector is on par with Lando Norris Gass is having a quietly good weekend es Baron's already out in this one 17th Place and the man that was on the podium last year is going to be gunning for a top 10 finish here yeah he was T um well various parameters that they can adjust that could have been a preset def adjustment for the highs speeded turn seven or it could have been in preparation for the next big breaking event which uh was a corner after that see how his middle sector it's personal best again only a tenth or so away from Norris this going to move him up fifth position for Pierre gazley gives himself a real opportunity goes ahead of Hamilton a clair stroll Perez and Alonzo into the Drop Zone goes Carlos sight top four stay in the pits and they'll be relieved to see these times dropping but not quite enough to usurp any of those guys so far gazley 4,000 off for Stafford Perez is flying big lap for Sergio Perez delivers when he needed to Fourth position for the Red Bull driver ahead of Max Sten who remains in the pit Lane Alonzo and signs now in the drop zone with the early uh efforts from those as the checker flag being prepared Alex alurn enormous leap for gets to fifth strolls quickest in the first sector though so couple of T down him Hamilton's first sector's very ordinary as well and he's down to 10th place he's finding a chunk in the middle change that Hamilton now drops down to 11th he's there with shair stroll on a good lap as well let's see if you can see it through to the end fastest of anyone in the first SE Improvement middle sector added all up and it goes to Fourth for the ason Martin driver Lance stroll the driver at risk is car L signs can Hamilton find the time no Hamilton who look so strong before the summer break two time times a winner in the last three grand prix out as charlot Clair goes to sixth position and his teammates knocked out out as a result as well SS and Hamilton find themselves heading in the second part of qualifying SS has been on the back foot all the way through the weekend lost time in fp2 but Hamilton would have been expected to get alongside Norris alongside piastri and alongside his teammate George Russell they're the top three at the end of Q2 the bottom five hulkenberg ahead of Magnuson codre in 13th and the big story signs and Hamilton fall at the second h what a shot that is Hamilton saved a set of tires in q1 look comfortable but didn't hook that up at the end no first sector we haven't seen hopefully we will what caused that yeah there was some I stayed in front of the all high speed corers it's a very subtle way isn't it not very generous hulkenberg did out qualify Kevin Magnuson now 123 up in the head-to head Fernando Lono was able to escape by about 600s of a second ahead of his countryman Carlos SS who was out I always looked through the session that SS was going to be struggling to make that top 10 a good effort from Pierre gazley to improve from the first run a great effort from Alex alurn to go from 15th to seventh in the final classification and a superb effort from Lance stroll yeah fourth both Aon Martins into the top 10 a big reprieve for them they slipped down in the order recently as the the sum's worn on come back after the summer break and stw's just oneth off the pace yeah that's a very strong qualifying for L STW there's certainly been that sense that as The Season's gone on before even summer break he's been matching and beating Alonzo on occasion okay L afid mate that's p12 so we've been bumped yeah it's just 4 and a half T to P1 very tight in that Mig pack okay Lewis Hamilton being informed by Pete bonington that he is out in that part of the session the gloves discarded as a result he will play no part in the top 10 shootout for the second year in a row Lewis Hamilton is out in Q2 for a summary of all we've just seen an analysis to go with it let's bring in Ruth bam Dy after Q2 yeah and the big story from Q2 that exit from Lewis Hamilton he had a bit of over steer on the exit of that final Corner which cost him8 seconds but that wasn't all of it it looks from the numbers and from the data the Mercedes have split setups with the Mercedes of Lewis about 38 seconds across a lap slower on the straights which means it looks like he's gone for a higher downfall setup whereas his teammate George Russell going for a lower down for setup now George his performance is really close across a lap to the McLaren going into Q3 with Max slipping back slightly he's losing about 3/10 on the straights compared to the top three still 10 pick kph faster in Sky flag turn thank you very much Ruth seeing replays of Lewis Hamilton fighting the car soaring away at the steering wheel same applied for Carlos signs a tale of two weekends One driver who would have expected that he might be under pressure heading into the final moments of Q2 the other one who would have expected to be contending Lewis Hamilton missing out for just the third time all season on the top 10 shootout in Q3 and just remaining in the car in 12th position sometimes the drivers remain in the car in case it's a chance of track limits and time being deleted Hamilton will play no part in that top 10 shootout and he will be investigated under the session after the session for potentially impeding Sergio Perez as well the DJ is pumping the tunes out at xan Port circuit the crowd they've been rained on they've seen delays but they are finally about to get to the brilliant moment of the weekend where some of the very best drivers in the world take it to the limit low fuel maximum attack and DC there's one clear overtaking opportunity around this racetrack so a good performance in qualifying always pretty handy around here yeah absolutely that is very much down into the first Corner although there could be opportunities into that 1112 section towards the end of the lap but um well 11 out of 10 for crowd participation they really do get behind the non nonstop music that's playing but yeah I'm curious to see what we saw Hamilton late in the lap with that on board but we didn't get a chance to see the first sector wasn't very strong as well we' we've had Silence from him I guess a bit of shock that he finds himself walking away on a weekend where Mercedes are in the hunt so one Mercedes in the top 10 10 Lewis Hamilton the alltime record holder for wins on 105 after that victory in Belgium goes to complete his admin at the FIA garage at the end of the pit Lane along with Carlos signs and it will be Norris piastri Russell stroll Perez lir Alan vapen gazley and Alonso who find themselves in this top 10 shootout and Nono contr trying to continue a much better second season as Fernando Alonzo's teammate than he first he was really put in the shade last year alono on the podium eight time stroll was never there but uh in this session he's trying to out qualify Fernando Alonso for the sixth time this season far more competitive the balance against the driver who turned 43 in the summer break only two drivers since 1975 have competed at 43 years of age in Formula 1 Michael schumacker and the man you were just looking at Fernando Alonso yeah he's got good jeans how only peg him at 41 so um he's getting away with it and motivated for well at least another two years I believe on his contract assuming all stays as is and uh as we what's going to say as is I'm looking at the window it's it's definitely grayer but got a sense that we might get an opening run of this qualifying session in the dry half a 10th separating McClaren and the Mercedes of George Russell and we can discount a little bit Max's time there as he only did that one run so it feels it does feel like a McLaren Mercedes should out for the pole but can Max find something he hasn't been able to so far it is the moment though in Q3 where the great drivers come alive and find a way now usually for Max with stpp and that's taking pole positions in Formula 1 and uh he's got 40 of them in his Formula 1 career it's he's 200 start in the championship tomorrow the youngest ever winner in their History of the World Championship but sometimes it's not about Pole Position sometimes it's about turning fifth place into third give yourself a chance give yourself an opportunity for the strategists to come into play likely that the two McLarens are going to be right up there but it's all about delivering right now yeah they know as much about this RAC track as they're going to at this stage we're going to have a couple of runs at it everyone I guess mindful of the weather not Dilly dallying getting at least a banker here but this could well be the lap of uh that decides the running or order yeah got to go out there and deliver the green light is on at the end of the pit Lane the outlasts begin for Q3 Q3 that will be contended by Fernando Alonzo Pierre gazley Alex Alvin Sergio Perez L STW George Russell the world championship leader Max stappen the Ferrari of charlot Clair and the two McLarens of Norris and piastri since this Dutch Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 Calendar we've had one winner we've had one driver on pole position and Max for stappen it was by fine marins in 2021 300s of a second 2022 two hundreds of a second and last year not a contest half a second between Max staffen and the rest of the field Formula 1 is back into seriously competitive territory this is the moment when fuel isow low DC that the drivers just relish the chance to take a car all right it's not the form car down to the driver to try and change that yeah absolutely it's it's is where you've got to use your your experience your confidence and your commitment to exploit these new tires and it's quite interesting to watch the Staton on the out laap that first sector he wasn't Dilly dallying he was looked like he was going through whatever procedures he needs to get that car ready he's got clear track as we're on board with Oscar piastri launching it in to turn one fantastic corner with great view for all the spectators let's see he took a slightly shallower line here earli in the session well bit higher on that occasion let's see if it improves at all his first sector Oscar piastri won his Maiden Grand Prix in Budapest and in the summer break we found out that it was with a broken rib after a pressure point in the sea cracked his rib in Austria here he's fully healed up now and he's on maximum attack the Australian driver trying to claim his first pole position today yeah again squidling the rear as he exploits maximum acceleration from low speed and ven had gone slightly quicker in the first sector but that's just been comprehensively beaten by Lando Norris so Norris finding confidence in what the sector pretty much that Max staffin made his own so this is uh Advantage McLaren at this early stage first over the line Oscar piastri will put a Time on the board Lon Norris going very quickly behind McLaren trying to do what they did in Budapest and lock out the front row piastri a 11.1 maxen we on board with the world championship leader trying to respond he's just behind Less Than 3 hundredths of a second and as noros goes for the line he's made a bit of a mistake in the middle sector Norris across the line and ahead of piastri and ven he had enough to get ahead after that mistake in the middle part of the lap Norris pastri ver stappen the top three sh Clair cannot get on terms with any of them he's 610 of a second behind Lando Norris in The Scarlet Ferrari George Russell has multiple pole positions so far this year he's got the smarting Injustice of having put together an audacious strategy in Belgium but he didn't get to keep the win because he was underweight trying to immediately make amends and start the next Grand Prix from the front of the field is the McLaren driver but he's not got any purple sectors at this stage he has got the DRS wide open through the banked final Corner the 14th and final corner of this racetrack where does Russell go as he comes across the line behind the two McLarens and Max a Sten he goes to Fourth and if we put together the best sectors of Norris and piastri that brings them into the nines and uh that will be information V staan will get from the sound analysis when he gets back to the garage and then you've got that sort of sobering moment of how good was my lap how much do I think I can improve and uh right now a very clear Advantage McLaren McLaren who locked out the front row in Hungary it's the first time they've done that since Lewis Hamilton was with the team in 2012 they are having their best season since Hamilton left that team in terms of podiums in terms of points they contenders for the construction Championship let's go on board with the driver leading the driver's Championship correction in 13 for the check the floor when I come in does like 13 I went a little bit wide okay under sub Max yeah he'll be concerned we've seen the smoking coming from pretty much all the cars you got to see Red Bull maybe a little bit less as it drags its tail through um that first opening section through seven but he may be worried about as the camera angle came off the bib the Leading Edge of the floor aerodynamically incredibly sensitive below these cars the track dominance top right there on your pitchure Sten looking so good in the first sector Lando Norris having that Benchmark first sector time after the first flying laps Norris and P stre currently an all McLaren front row that we were talking about sometimes it's not about taking Pole Position it's about getting the best possible result if the sing can split the McLaren he gives himself an opportunity to try and keep this incredible run going going at his home Grand Prix he's looking to win it tomorrow for the fourth successive year well can he of course he can will he it just feels that and that track dominance graphic was very telling for me uh seven he's owned that's a blind highspeed full commitment corner and the fact that Lando has come into form in that section as well just shows where the McLaren driver's minds are at they they feel it one with the car they're exploiting the performance of those new tires so no time on the board yet for those outside the top six Lance stroll trying to out qualify Fernando Alonso for the sixth time this season in this session two-time Champion Alonzo also out on track he's at turn eight stro is about to start his lap we've yet to see Sergio Perez out there we've yet to see Alex Alan out there we have five minutes to go in Q3 we've got couple of battles going going on here as stroll fights the car through turn number one yeah you launch it down into slightly camber Tarzan you can see he a correction mid Corner again a little correction there in three so he's not getting that sort of medium speed Corner stability on the rear axle that doesn't mean it won't come to him but uh certainly so far yeah middle that first sector full 310 slower than our fastest which is Norris the Canadian drive at 25 years of age has found himself beating Fernando Alonzo in three of the last four grand prix trying to give himself a opportunity to do that but it's under steering like one of the ships in the North Sea yeah that uh yeah that car it just hasn't found a sweet spot I don't suspect that he went out there thinking I'm really challenging for the front row but certainly for the inter team honor of being the fastest driver and he's really stepped up I think this year um Fernando was sort of owning the team when he first joined it but La Lance is definitely showing he's making Improvement so he goes ahead of Pierre gazley the top five Out Of Reach for the moment not by too much though let's see what Fernando Alonzo can do so when it's come to the checkered flag on Grand Prix Sunday he's always been last three years in the top six here trying to continue that run again second Aston waiting waiting waiting for the grip as he comes out of turn 10 11 is ahead yeah he's a 10th or so down on his teammate in that first sector so let's see if he can keep it tidier in the middle and last part of the lap um ason just pick up the honor of going quickest in this particular part of the qualifying session in the times and the gxes in that middle sector Fernando Alonzo hasn't been in the top six on a Formula 1 grid since the Canadian Grand Prix six races ago that's a lap time good enough to go ahead of his teammate and Clair fifth place for Fernando Alonso with 3 minutes to go we are going to see another response from Pierre gazley first run in this part of the session for Sergio Perez first run as well for that updated Williams car of Alexander Alban and the main headline the battle between Norris piastri and vapen for pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix and you look there 2023 vapen 2022 vapen 2021 vapen and then you go all the way back to the 80s where it was Nelson PK and Alan Prost who were on the front of the field when the time that the lights were going in it feels strange to be in a qualifying session I cannot do more than this said the 43y old who qualified his teamate um but I think he won't be too unhappy with that relative to where Mercedes are right now um I was just going to say it seems strange not to be really talking about a Ferrari being a threat to to be in the mix for the top three or four you know lir difficult to even imagine that he'll be able to get into that party okay this is when it's all on the line 2 minutes to go pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix up for grabs can Max a stappen take it once again he's looking for a chance to step forward and the Dutch driver has has an opportunity all over the curbs there as we attack 90 seconds to go we're on board with him he's looking for a personal best in the first sector it is a personal best but it's not on terms with what the McLaren's been able to manage yeah full commitment through seven just beautiful to hear just a small lift and dragging speed off through that turn but visibly working the wheel in these lower speed Corners let's see if he can keep it tidy yeah that was actually not a bad drive off this middle par of the lap but Norris has lowered the lap time possible in the first sector again oh hanging on to it Max staffen trying to scrub the speed off he's got the fastest middle sector of anyone so far can he give himself an opportunity to force the McLaren to respond for staffen hanging on to it all the way through the lap trying to make it four pole positions in a row and he's home race and that time is good enough to bring a cheer from the grand stands he will force the McLaren to respond here is Lando Norris who takes it back and then some by three T of a second is Lando Norris heading to a fourth career pole position or will it be a first for Oscar piastri piastri is a little bit down in that first sector we do know there's enough of the middle part and final part a lap to pull it back but doesn't have quite the same confidence in that highspeed section raids the car as he runs it down into this little chicane like Liv and 12 nice little camber change there again to continue the roller coaster ride that is zamort well Lando Norris looks like he's on the brink of a fourth career pole position in Formula 1 Oscar piastri is trying to join his teammate on the front row can McLaren lock out the front row or will it be ven no third place for Oscar piastri Max vapen was quicker by about half a tenth of a second and it's Norris in the boxing Russell not improving in the middle part of the lap add it all together it should be a step forward for the British driver currently in P5 Paris is in fourth he was Russell moves to Fourth position and it is Lando Norris and Max vabon who will resume battle on the front row in Formula 1 by the standards of this season that is a dominant Pole Position Lando Norris takes pole for the Dutch Grand Prix he's 3 and a half T of a second ahead for just just the fourth time in Formula 1 it's Lando Norris at the front of the field love you work what up nice job and confirm that is bot tramatic stuff on track and totally chilled on the road absolutely the way he built that qualifying session was beautiful to watch little bit careful initially and that first sector knowing that Max was always able to go out and deliver that lap time but crucially we into this final part of qualifying he started to dominate the first sector and that probably was getting inside the head of Max as well I think that's been a mate effort from visten to split the McLaren pastri will definitely be disappointed by that but what a pull position for Lando Norris wonderful stuff for the British driver celebrating his fourth career poll he talked about in the summer break how he went back and analyzed where he needs to improve it wasn't the qualifying Pace he was mindful that the starts and the first lap it's where his races have sometimes Come Undone since this car was updated and Zack Brown CEO of the team just a little bit pumped up he loves it fresh off the back of his own victory in America the um I forget the name of the racetrack where they have the um the quail um during the summer break he was out racing his old Williams and various other cars so uh he's got winning on his mind can they convert tomorrow well it is the top two in the World Champ championship and we'll reverse them to set our grid on the front row Max stapen found a way to deny McLaren Oscar piastri was uh very nearly half a second off his teammate's best didn't have the pace on that second run and Lando Norris comfortably ahead in the head-to-head battle 123 up in the two McLaren drivers Lando Norris like pastri tomorrow going for his second Grand Prix win Max Sten has just the 61 to his tally but he's witless in four McLaren trying to keep that the case as the Red Bull debrief begins I don't think Max will be too disappointed with that and I think Chu will be hugely relieved fifth position for Sergio Perez who was animated on the radio after the disappointment he believed at being impeded that's still going to be looked at after the session so Lando Norris Max a stapen Osa piastri a late lap from George Russell put him fourth for Mercedes fifth for Perez and then our top 10 completed by charlot Clair Fernando Alonzo who won the mini battle of those running slightly out of sequence good lap from Alex Alin only 200s behind the two uh the two-time world champion and then stroll and gazley jolian has run from the commentary box to park F and he's speaking to our top three Max B happen it's second place today in zamber but what a show you put on there was a huge cheer from the crowd when you provisionally took pole just wasn't quite to be today yeah I think uh the whole of qualifying you know we just lacked a bit of pace um I tried the best I could I'm still very happy of course to be on on the front row uh it's very tricky out there with the win I mean uh you know you have these gust of wind coming in so every single lap just feels different so you can't really go off a reference as well um but yeah I'm happy with second I think after yesterday as well this this is a good result how tricky was it with the balance we saw your lap at the end fighting the car and the chicane 11 and 12 some under steer some over steer piecing a up together just look very hard yeah it's how it is at the moment um not the easiest to drive but uh the rest of the laot was quite solid I think yeah only 1112 was a bit uh a bit difficult um but yeah we'll we'll see hopefully the car is okay tomorrow in in the race but no one's ever beaten you at this circuit three wins on the bounce here you at least start from the front row can you win we'll give it a good go but of course when you are more than three1 behind in qualifying I I think we have to be realistic you know I I just try to have a good race tomorrow all right well you're on the front row Le well done Max good [Applause] luck Oscar not quite the front row in the end you were so close all the way through qualifying just slit back to third what went wrong on the uh the final lap uh yeah I just didn't do a good enough job really um I think the first half lap was pretty solid and then the second half just uh wasn't wasn't quite what I needed so um yeah clearly the the car has been very quick this weekend and um yeah a little bit disappointing to to not be a bit higher up but um we still got a a good race car underneath us and we can get some some really good points and hopefully some trophies tomorrow so um yeah we give a pack you got upgrades on the car obviously with the weather that we've had this weekend it's been very difficult to get too many great reads I imagine from it but they seem to be working well yeah I think they're all doing what they expect uh what we expect them to do and um yeah anything you can put on the car especially when it's as tight as it is it's uh always a always a good thing so um yeah not the easiest conditions to see what it's like but as long as it makes the car quicker then I'm happy and the car looked good on the long run as well you thinking that should give you a chance to bring you into play for uh for a victory tomorrow perhaps yeah I think it's it's definitely not out of the question um yeah the the pace did look good in the long run and um yeah we've been we've been pretty quick the last few weekends so hopefully we can have a good day tomorrow um get a a good start and try and make up uh a couple of spots if I can but um yeah some some good things on off for tomorrow all right Oscar well done I hope you can get in the fight cheers Lando what a performance that was we're back from the summer break and you're back with a bang pole by three and a half T today incredible thank you uh yeah uh an amazing day nice to be back and uh and start with a poll uh it was a nice lap honestly the qualifying was always pretty smooth and um put in some good laps especially the one at the end which is always the most important so um great job by the team and and happy with today and everyone's talking about these these weather conditions the wind the rain you seem to be happy across the board every lap that you're doing is right at the front rain or shine wind or no wind uh it's it's harder than looks I think um I mean everyone's complaining of it cuz it it is tricky it's not easy out there and every every lap you have to kind of know what to expect and know how much more you can push where the limits are uh but that's our job in the end of the day so it's it's not easy but I felt comfortable out there the car was feeling amazing we've got some uh some upgrades on the car for first time in a while and um everything's working very well so uh a big thanks to the team too and looking forward to tomorrow it's a shorter run to the first Corner than Barcelona and Budapest can you hang on why you're saying that but uh no I'm I'm I'm excited for it tomorrow I'm sure it's going to be tough um Max has been quick all weekend I know we got him today but he's uh he's still second and he's going to be putting up a good fight especially at his home race so um looking forward to it we're looking forward to it too well done Lando thank you joli and Palmer with the questions to our top three Lando norres on poll position for the fourth time in his Formula 1 career Max has happen and Oscar piastri who will line up in third place further back now Fernando Alonso is in seventh Alex Alban getting his best qualifying performance of the season in eighth place but they are your contenders for victory McLaren updating that car
