hello caramel middle school it's mrs. Holsinger and I am back for our second lesson for our at home and distance learning I wanted to just say I was so happy to hear from so many of you and so happy to see so many of you this week through office hours through teams through text message and calls it's been really great catching up with you and knowing that you're all doing well and you're engaged in your learning so I'm really proud of all of you for that keep up the good work that's a great job I wanted to start by saying that last week in my video I said that we would review lesson 1 so we'll quickly go through that I got a lot of really great responses on lesson 1 and I was really impressed with how thoughtful our answers were to these questions so it was talking about how musical styles change over time and the first question that we answered was what happens when musical styles change do they change all at once or gradually causing an overlap of popular styles and many of you agreed that the styles did change gradually and that it was a good way to keep people interested in that style because if it changed all at once people might lose interest or not really like the all of a sudden changes and stray away from that music the next question was why would an overlap in styles cause a difference of opinion on what music is preferred and a lot of people said that some people just like one way and some people like the other way and I agree with that a lot the overlap in the styles that we hear in common popular music leads to a lot of people in a difference of opinion and I think it's just all based off of personal preference so I know that there are definitely some subgenres that I like of certain styles of music and some that I don't so and it all has to do with personal preference maybe what's going on with your life or what's going on in the world or just your own personal tastes so interpret what might your parents musical choices how might your parent's musical choice is different from yours or your grandparents so I got a lot of really great responses to that and I agree that you know our musical tastes and preferences might differ from our parents and I remember being younger and listening to some of the music that my parents would have won in the car and I always listen to oldies and I remember just kind of rolling my eyes at it or whatever because it wasn't the newest and coolest thing but now thinking back on it when I hear those songs from when I was younger that my parents would play it brings back really great memories especially of my mom my mom was a singer she was a musician she loved music and I miss her very greatly and so when I hear those songs that remind me of her they're now part of my style and my style preferences because they're connected to really fond memories of my mother so and a lot of you had some really great things to say about that so I really liked hearing that personal part of it that personal piece that you added into it the last question was evaluate do you believe your musical tastes will change as you get older I'd say I got about 50 50 percent or 50 50 response that some of you say no it'll never change I like what I like and a story and some of you thought maybe if there's new things I'm sure it will change I agree I agree with both of those because there are things that I like that I like I like I like and even from my middle school days but I also agree with your preferences changing as you get older especially because I like new things now and that's in addition to the old stuff that I like but there's also some things that I listen to when I was in 6th 7th and 8th grade that I'm like what was I thinking but that's all individual preferences and style and there's no right and wrong answer to that that's the great thing about music sometimes is it's just the best answer is the most thoughtful answer that is real to you and that's what I think is great about music so what we want to Arnett lesson which is a little bit abstract and you've got to really kind of think through some things and do a lot of comparing and contrasting so if we look this is the page that you're on and you are gonna see these two buildings both of them are in our United States Capitol which is Washington DC you see the US Capitol building here and you see the White House and there are some essential questions here that are gonna kind of help us understand why in the world there would be pictures of buildings and our music assignment so how do the other arts other disciplines contexts and daily life inform the creating performing and responding to music and our discussion question is how much do styles in art forms influence each other so when we talk about art forms that is music that is painting that's sculpture and also something that we don't often talk about or think about architecture and architecture you can see in these buildings this is a style of constructing buildings and it took place in the Classical era of our history so we're gonna go over to the next page with the student response and I'll read for you the Classical period from 1750 to 1820 is a time where musical forms were simple and used very similar ideas of structure see the video linked below for an explanation of two such structures binary and ternary music was very symmetrical with large portions of pieces repeated so when we listen to classical music that would be any music that was composed between 1750 and 1820 we're going to hear that there are particular forms called binary and ternary forms binary means you have one section and then a second section and they sound different ternary could mean one section a second section and then a third section that repeats or also sounds different so because of that you hear very symmetrical form and music you'll hear one idea and a second idea and then you'll hear that one idea again then the second idea again and seventh and eighth grade we talked about form this year we talked about um in seventh grade the theme and variations and in eighth grade we talked about a B and a B a form and we talked about verse refrain form so this should be familiar sixth grade this is a little bit new of an idea but there are still a lot of learning that you can draw through it now it's asking you to describe how might you describe the basic design of the buildings pictured above so if we look back at this picture and we think about there's some clues and Student Response directions I talked about music as being similar and symmetrical so let's take a look at these buildings if I take my paper and I fold it in half and I see one side of both of these buildings and then I flip it over and look here and I see the other side they're very symmetrical they look the same on both sides so they're very symmetrical buildings which is different than some of the buildings that we have today if you think about the way car mult looks it's a very unsymmetrical building you think about the the big part that comes out over there in the middle sleek where mrs. Lackner room is but the front where the office is is part of the old school building the original school building so you can think about how newer architecture looks very different if you think about that side of the school versus the front of the school that was built a much earlier time it was very symmetrical so when we listen to music we can hear how things could be symmetrical just like the pictures of these buildings here what are some other things that you notice about the buildings do you notice any columns do you notice any ornamentation fancy decorations that are on them to notice anything like that the next question is interpret how meant the structure of the two buildings pictured above both built during the Classical period be similar to the symmetrical music forms of the Classical period now that might be a challenge if you don't know what classical music sounds like so I'm gonna play for you a small example from Mozart called eine kleine Nachtmusik and we're going to get to hear an example of how the music is symmetrical so first the song starts out in a very big statement it's a very recognizable statement I'll play it for you [Music] you may recognize this piece music if you have little brothers or sisters or cousins at home you might hear this in Dennis's from Little Einsteins or it's been made popular and commercials and television so this is still all part of the first section [Music] now we're going to move into the B section or the second section here you can hear that it's different than the first section now it's getting ready to move and change come back right here and that's where our symmetry comes in we can hear that this is the same as the very beginning so the piece starts and ends the same just like the building of the White House or the Capitol building it starts and ends the same it's very symmetrical evaluate is our last question is there some connection to the forms of architecture and the forms of music in the Classical period what might cause there to be similarities in musical and artistic form so why do you think that people that were building architectural masterpieces such as the Capitol building and people who were composing musical masterpieces such as Mozart what what do you think was similar what was going on why were they creating things that were maybe similar when I think about classical buildings and classical music I noticed the symmetry but I also noticed the ornamentation the fancy trills or frills that they put on the notes lots of moving parts lots of detail while the floor may be simple the music is very rich and detailed just like when you look at the buildings you'll notice that there are some very very rich details in the buildings so that's kind of how you can connect those two things in the evaluate portion I hope that this video was helpful I know that this is again an abstract concept but again I really am just looking for you to use your best thinking that's the great thing about musical responses is that when we're thinking about it it's not about a right or wrong answer it's about critical thinking and what are you coming up with I love hearing your ideas I think that's what makes it great is that we all have different ideas and different understandings and that's okay that's the great thing about music so again I'm just looking for your best effort and giving me a thoughtful and thorough response and remember this is one thing that I saw from week one explain your answers give information to back up your statement so that you can support your viewpoint with evidence all right I hope this was helpful as always reach out to me on teams or through text or through email and I will get back to you and help you the best that I can also this week I posted our assignment in Word format hopefully that will be easier for you I don't care if the format looks good but you should have an easier time typing in to the assignment and the document by using just Microsoft Word so hopefully that works for you if it doesn't let me know and we can go back to doing it the same way we did in Lesson one where I put it in your class notebook so either way give me some feedback and I look forward to reading your responses and checking in with you guys soon all right talk to you soon have a great week bye bye
