Madden 23 - Dallas Cowboys @ Los Angeles Chargers - Week 6 Monday Night Football foreign [Applause] football league on EA Sports in tonight's class of conferences is just moments away it's the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night prime time night beginning to fall over Southern California but the lights are shining bright here at the spectacular Sofi stadium in Metropolitan Los Angeles tonight [Applause] Thursday night we've got a good one in store between the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers and high again everybody alongside my partner Charles Davis I'm Brandon Gordon and Charles when you and I were going through our final run-throughs at breakfast we kept thinking tonight we're going to get to see a couple of very good passing offenses and we're talking about both sides having multiple receivers that could have an impact on this game it's not just one guy that's going to make all the plays if you take him away maybe number two number three they make the big plays that impact who wins the game [Applause] [Music] thank you 1st quarter the kick team out there for the Cowboys as they run up to send this one away for this fielded right at the goal line and Beyond the 20 but not by much in fact just a yard pass there to the 21. here are the Chargers ready to go on offense led by their first round pick in 2020. the man out of Oregon Justin Herbert and he is just absolutely marvelous to watch throw a football that's something I could do all day long watch him throw routes versus air but he's even more impressive when their bodies on the field and he's creating with big throws downfield [Applause] foreign [Applause] to throw right away and the Cowboys pressure gets there this time for the sack Delmon Clark fought his way through and buried him behind the line how about the defense there trying to set the tone of the very first play of the game yeah it is a little bit of a glow here tonight because they brought the heat right out of the gate what a good job establishing the tone for this one [Applause] let's go gotta hope that's not a sign of things to come as they face an early second and long another try after the first down sack Herbert oh he'll want that one back incomplete he doesn't drop too many in that department third down well that's not the way you want to start a first pass attempt and a first drop all in one but you've got plenty of time to make up for it but obviously not the way you want to get things started got to shake that off and get going I don't think this is the script they had in mind for their opening drive this is third and long Herbert now finds his Target Allen and he's going to be taken down and about the 33. the thing that hurt on that play The Mist tackle that allowed the extra yardage it's a match-up game in the NFL you get the guy that you want isolated have him miss a tackle and off you go so how about this for a change in field position from inside to 10. here's first down on the other side of the field back to throw here Herbert got his man complete over the middle it's Johnston he'll be marked down at the 26 with a gain of seven foreign [Applause] they'll Run for the first time with Austin Eckler and he stopped after a gain of one not enough still a yard to go on third down sometimes you're aligned perfectly in the play comes to you and sometimes you gotta cover some ground to go make the plays we just saw there we saw a great great example of perseverance right there on that play got to be careful they might walk through one over his head as this game progresses they'll try to pick up the First with Eckler and that one going nowhere from the start as he's met in the backfield and goes backwards a loss of a yard and it brings up fourth that's a really alert defense there because they saw the heavy look come in from the offense counted it with extra linebackers who brought a little bit of speed and heft and able to really make a big time play for their defense [Applause] on fourth down Herbert and complete they cannot convert then they turn it over the fourth down play doesn't work for the Chargers and this defense holds firm here on the opening drive of the night now we'll see with the right arm of Dak Prescott has in store as the Dallas Cowboys offense sets up shop it's been a lot of fun watching him advance in his career many people question his ability to throw the football coming out Mississippi state is conclusively answered that question in addition a very strong Runner and an even better leader let us Victor [Applause] so press down to the Cowboys now with a First and Ten at their own 25-yard line they'll try and start this drive in the air he finds his man complete it's Ferguson and he's going to be dropped following a pick up a seven past the 30 to the 32. Brandon as you know sometimes a lot time to remember these tight ends nowadays in the NFL they're just bigger wide receivers he lined up on the left side of the formation ran a drag route across the field and tried to work his way open he was able to make the catch but the Defenders were there couldn't do a whole lot with it afterwards they'll throw over the middle taken in a gain of five good enough for the first down I got kicked out of that one partner you and I talk often about trying to hide receivers in certain situations but a guy of his size can't really hide him but the tight end drag route definitely an effective way to sneak him across the formation for an easy completion and a first down [Applause] a lot of scrimmage the 37 on First and 10. now Prescott they'll fire this deep for Gallup and it'll be incomplete good job staying with it defensively and it'll bring up second down but they certainly came out firing in this one and while that one was incomplete I can't imagine that'll be the last shot that they take in this game after the incomplete pass here now is second and ten Prescott from the gun that's Gallop on the slam and they're going to get this to about the 44-yard line [Applause] and forget about the run to set up the pass they're just coming out throwing forget trying to set anything up they feel like they have the advantage they feel like they have the matchups and they're just attacking right now going to the air on the opening drive [Applause] so from charger territory now here's a First and Ten at the 44-yard line play action now Prescott open man right side it's round so he stopped for No Gain headed second down that was a simple throw and catch but even with that completion zero yards gained so they're behind schedule on down and distance I think they were hoping to get it to him he can make a man or two Miss but that window closed quickly on play action Prescott fighting his safety valve here that's complete got this down a yard or too shy of the 40 before he's out of bounds he'll get only three there so it leaves him with a third and seven ahead [Applause] so seven yards from the first down here as they come up to the line of scrimmage on third down it's pressed down he finds his man complete that's Ferguson and he will have a Cowboys first down as they're able to get the third down conversion solid opening drive so far Charles they've moved this football into field goal range but you know that they want to cap this off with six and not three absolutely as one of the better coaches in the league always tells me on offense I want their body Bros right now he's carried the end of this drive throw for Prescott throw is going to be incomplete today's NFL these big guys are featured in receivers they move them all over the place to try and find good matchups and they had one they were just unable to complete the pass [Applause] so now second and ten after the incompletion on first down Prescott to throw it he's going to find Gallup here complete and he's going to get this down near the 25. he went in route there from the slot for the completion love how he runs his routes because it's all setting up your Defender give him a little something one way take it the other way Head and Shoulder fake sometimes you make one step to the outside to break it inside really well Run Road they run it for the first time with Tony Fowler and he gets it inside the 10 to the nine they're able to convert on third down to that sets up a first and goal quite the opening drive March they're on right now it looks a lot like what we saw in practice prior to the game doesn't it you know because on that last big practice beforehand you go through your offensive script you go through your play calling you go through all the stuff and establish things and it looks like it's called like clockwork right now three here we go now on first and goal now Prescott to the sideline wow what a catch doesn't get a lot out of it but he is able to keep the feet in bounds three yards is the game that time second and goal well they're not hiding who their Central focus is on offense Charles he already now has four receptions here on this opening drive and I know people who are watching the game are thinking they did forget about him in the defensive game plan has actually been the opposite they're giving him a lot of attention but he's been very creative and Savvy in his route running and finding scenes and openings in order to create these completions throwing again on second down but this time it's incomplete it hasn't been a real good start to this game from a defensive perspective but now after the incompletion on second down things may be changing if they can come up with one more play they might be able to get out of it but just a field goal attempt Prescott on Third and goal and this is caught for a cowboy touchdown Jake Ferguson from six yards away and the Cowboys put the knights first points on the board as they take the early lead no surprise there third and goal down here that's where they're going to look for their tight end yeah you want that big guy running his routes because it doesn't matter who they cover him with it's another big guy he might use his bulk against him if it's a shorter Defender might go over the top either way you tend to find a little bit of a mismatch in that area the extra point up and good and that makes the score seven nothing so that one a 13 play Drive in total and it's capped off for the Cowboys touchdown [Applause] set now to kick this one away and off it goes and Davis continued just to bring this out to the 25-yard line the Chargers get set to go here for their second drive and on the last Drive they were in field goal range they just opted not to kick it didn't get it how does that change the mentality this goal around I don't think it changes much for the head coach because this is what he preaches all the time attack at all times in any spot on the field and he likes touchdowns not field goals now your field goal kicker you've got to make sure you nurse him through and say okay don't worry about it when we need you you've got to be ready to go and the team of course loves to see points on the board so let's see if it changes a little bit if they're in the same spot again we'll see what the decision is here if they get to that spot that's good for a pickup of 10 yards and they'll be left with a second and about a foot I know exactly what's going to be said about that play from the defensive perspective what's that that's why I tell all you guys we need more than one tackler to the ball he broke the first tackle luckily enough there are more people there to get him down on second and very short Herbert that's complete to Austin Eckler the running back and bring it up here to right at the 40-yard line a gain of five good enough for the first down that was a pretty favorable situation there what would you call that second and manageable smart play too didn't force it downfield when he didn't have it just checked it down let him get the first down and that's exactly what he did [Applause] on first down it's Herbert throw right side complete to Williams and they'll get to him after a gain of seven to the 47. I think defensively you're okay with that you're in the first quarter he's going to get some catches but they rallied two in Brooklyn and that's what you count on and I like what you just said first quarter can you do it all game long they catch it you tackle them they go down on the spot because when you're able to do that you don't give a big chunks of yardage after the catch now you put the offense in a position where every series they have to work hard to pick up first downs and he can't find anywhere to go with it and he goes down defensive end Demarcus Lawrence supplied the Heat and no matter what the situation the o-line just hates that because they feel like they didn't protect little brother back there right yeah and that's just so difficult for them because just think about every single play when you decide to throw the football you're dealing with some of the best athletes on the planet you talk about guys if they weren't playing football they'd be starring in the NBA at power forward it's really difficult task thank you yeah the Cowboys here on third down bringing in an extra defensive back Justin Herbert looking to pass and this is caught by Williams and he'll go down but not before getting this inside the 30. one heck of a third down conversion 33 yards we always talk about the guy who paid off the play Don't We Go caught it or ran it but how about the elements that go into making a big play this one in particular able to scan the field pocket held up nicely what a terrific job by the offensive line the route will run and the football right on the money so now then the big play has him all the way inside the 30 now first and 10. Herbert will give this one to Eckler and he'll get this one down to about the 27. tackle there by Leighton Vander esch no doubt about it really nice job there by the defense not allowing him to get to the perimeter but that means your defensive end your outside linebackers the guys that you pay big money to to sack the quarterback they also have to have interest in the running game as well and they did a nice job there holding the point of attack and not giving ground that he'll be tackled at the 23 after a gain of three well they certainly had success throwing the ball in this drive and not as much running it as we just saw once again on that last play stopped after a very short gain but I wouldn't abandon the Run totally because otherwise pass rushers just tee off on your quarterback makes it very very difficult for him in that situation from the gun Herbert on third down he dumps it to Eckler underneath and he's brought down short by a yard it's a third down gain of four if this for baseball we call this small ball instead of pushing it down field they throw a short pass trying to pick up the first down but the defense rallies to the football and stops him short bringing up a fourth down the Chargers will bring out the field goal unit now from the left hash it's a 36-yard attempt and this one is right through and they are on the board but still trailing it's 7-3 are able to end that drive with three points in this one possession ball game and ideally you want to end every drive with points most quarterbacks to tell you let's end it with a kick right a p-a-t that's number one field goal you'll take punts you really don't want to do that in this case they'll take the field goal and get prepared for the rest of the game the kick unit on here for the Chargers as they will send this one away and here comes a return for just beyond the goal line and he'll be dropped at the 21-yard line so breaking it out of the end zone proves not a good decision loses them about four yards second Drive fourth coming here for the Dallas Cowboys the offense running out and they are charged up ready to go after reaching the End Zone on their last drive and normally I'd warn against getting complacent just because they scored the last time out but I don't think there's any worries with this group right now this is a hungry group and they want to keep building off of their last drive now they just want the officials to hurry up and place the ball so he can snap it and get back to work so the drive is going to start with Pollard a minimal gain as we tip down inside of a minute remaining in the opening quarter oh that's a real nice job there by the defensive front they just engaged and held their ground but how about the guy who made the play we all been talking about whether they take a good first step or not many times you just don't take any step just get your feet moving get your body going and then once he made the read he was able to make the play meanwhile Dax throw there caught by Gallup and he'll be out of bounds across the 30-yard line so the completion good for seven there and that'll leave him with a third in just a yard timing is so important on a route like this because he's done a lineup out right then cut straight across the field I think I think might have come out a counter too too late because by the time he was able to secure it not much of a chance to turn it up field trying to run forward with Pollard and he's going to be brought down on what will be the final play of this first quarter after one 7-3 the score on EA Sports [Applause] start of the second quarter and it's the Cowboys in possession as they've got it with a First and Ten all right let's go [Applause] 2nd quarter on the draw it's Pollard and some room to run now and he's taken down right at the 45-yard line 42 yards rushing for now and he's only carried the ball four times what makes a draw play like that successful well we did see where he made the first wave Miss and that was a big part of it but a lot of it is just being actors back there making the defense think it's going to be a pass [Applause] so from charger territory now here's a First and Ten at the 45-yard line to throw his press gun and Kutz has it over the middle and the tackle going to be made at the 38. one things you're hoping for when you run drag routes you're able to hit a receiver in stride and he can pick up a lot of yardage after the catch but in this situation the defense was effective able to stop him before he can get a good head of steam going on second down it's powder and he'll go down here at the 35-yard line they'll get three as the drive continues it's a first down well that was a unit that understood exactly where the first down marker was handed it to their guy who could run it created some space and he got there ball up to the 35 now as they come up on First and Ten Cooks and they'll work this down inside the 30. never make the mistake that the slot receivers especially the little guys that we're watching here are just quicker than fast a lot of them can buy quickness and speed and they catch a lot of footballs as we just saw there looking to throw again on second down Prescott that's in the hands and Gallup over the middle and he's going to be marked down just outside the 10. [Applause] and that's more than expected to Marine right there because it's Zone coverage so timing is everything watch his man to come open puts it right on him and they pick up a first down now a First and Ten at the 11. Prescott touchdown Cowboys two first half touchdown passes down for Dak Prescott as his guys are able to extend their lead all the receivers in the league are plenty good enough otherwise they wouldn't make it in the NFL but the ones that go to the Pro Bowl they have refined route running ability the call is to go for one and kick the extra point and this one's right through to make it a 14-3 ball game so that drive consumes nine plays all told and it culminates in a Dallas touchdown [Applause] how does the kickoff unit as they run up and send this one away from a couple yards deep he'll bring it out of the end zone and no alley to be found the coverage was solid and he's dropped at the 18. and the LA offense ready for this next possession they Trail now 14-3 and 11 Point deficit as they start things out with the First and Ten [Applause] Herbert it's complete to Williams he'll be dropped at the 25 after a gain of six teammates right here and what I mean by that is possess the ball for a little while get at least two first downs give their defense chance to settle down a little bit after they give up a touchdown [Applause] second and four [Applause] now a give running left is Heckler and a running Lanes non-existent in this first half as they'll stop him behind the line it'll be a loss of a couple on the play so now third down coming up the running Lanes have definitely not been there for him here in the first half and I don't think it's all been his fault his offensive line hasn't given him much space a loss results there all right the Chargers on third down they've hit two for four thus far this will be third and five [Applause] Herbert now he's airing it out for Williams well this is taken in it's complete and he will step out of bounds all the way down inside the 40. a big play there for La 41 yards and that might be exactly what they needed to wake up this home crowd they haven't given them much to cheer for so far and never underestimate the effect the home crowd with you can have on a game [Applause] let's go baby [Applause] so how about that for a chain mover they're all the way down inside the 40 now for First and Ten Eckler now between the tackles and he Maneuvers up the middle for three and it's second down not a huge carry there first down but not only then we'll be but still positive play for the offense it's all about picking up at least a few to set up what you're going to do here on second down the last run got three now here's second and seven [Applause] it's Heckler again they had three yards on first down just one yard there I know the speed is the Hallmark of today's NFL game but the key to good rushing defense is still having your linebackers set the edge [Applause] gotta get to the 26 for a first this is third down [Applause] here's Herbert and he'll be marked down right at the 20-yard line this has been a nice answer to the touchdown drive against him a few minutes ago because they've cut back and reestablished the tempo a nice throw there and they're putting together a very strong drive as a response [Applause] this offense finding its legs now here's another First and Ten Herbert operating from the red zone looking End Zone but it's incomplete tremendous field position there in a perfect time to do exactly what they did take a shot at the end zone they went for the big Play Just unable to complete it foreign from the 20. they go back to the ground now with Eckler and he's only going to get a yard from the 20 to the 19. bass again has been working quite well so far but the running game's been a little bit of a struggle that's a surprise to me typically when you can throw it you've opened up lanes for your runners they're two for two on third down conversions on this drive this one tough they need nine yards on third down now Herbert with it looking to pass that's going to be complete to his tight end Everett touchdown Chargers Gerald Evelyn from 19 th away and the Chargers have got it back to over the score a good tight end is a heck of a weapon for any quarterback especially when you're able to create some mismatches sometimes they work against a linebacker sometimes they work against a smaller defensive back but when they find it they go to it and it often results in touchdowns foreign [Applause] s up with a touchdown for Los Angeles the kickoff unit is out on the field and they will send this one away and this will be a Touchback so they'll bring it out to the 25. Jack Prescott on the offense heading back onto the field five for five that last Drive touchdown pass as well he was clicking receivers I don't want to be cliche but running really solid rounds too and what I love about it is when you look across any team all right the body types of the receivers are usually different the way that they get open different as well some of them use power to get open some of them use those head fakes and subtle moves some of them just use pure speed and the really good ones when they're established they know how to push off at the end of a route too not much to speak of call it a one-yard gain up to the 26. they'd love to just strike back with a touchdown right here and if it's a long play so be it but the main goal first downs run some plays run some clock allow their defense to get a chance to catch their breath settle down and relax a little bit after he just gave up the score on second and nine Prescott [Applause] Prescott and lamb hooking up for the cowboy first and next team mate used to tell me all the time I hate experienced quarterbacks because no matter what you really can't hide what you're doing and I think that right there he knew right away where the blitz was coming from worst primary guy was going to be and he ended up going to a secondary Target for a nice game I was just going to ask you that wasn't the primary target he's so good at that isn't he I think he knew right away that he wasn't going to get to his primary guy I think he read that as soon as he got to the line of scrimmage knew where the pressure was going to come from and said ah I know how to beat that and that's what he did he gets it to Coons and they're able to work this across Midfield to the 48. good strong throw and catch right there and so far in this game the alleys have been open for them to get completions and they're taking advantage of it [Applause] so from charger territory now here's a First and Ten at the 48-yard line now Prescott got his man there complete to Gallup and he'll be brought down inside the 40-yard line can you see his own defense and you know you've got a drag route on as your primary call you've got to be really careful as a passer about how far you let your guy go because he might wander into some tough coverage and again it's Prescott open mend on field is lamb it's complete and he's going to be out down inside the 20 at the 15. that one covers 24 yards it's a first down and a good quarterback facing Zone coverage if he has just a little bit of time to survey the scene that's what's going to happen no doubt about it if there's no pressure he's going to continue to pick them apart because he'll have all that time to find someone open downfield you can only cover it for so long so maybe they want to go through his own blitzki get a little bit more pressure remember when Carolina did that against Denver they lost the game ultimately they dropped the defensive end out and ended up with an interception in that game in Super Bowl 50. maybe some sort of scheme like that to try and get more pressure at the passer here's a pass swung out left to his running back and it looks like he'll be just a yard shy of the five here as he's out at the six a good pick up there on first as the stream pass gets him a good yardage there on first down because sometimes all you need to do on the screen is get one key blocked that might set your man free and that was pretty good pursuit to the football defensively or it could have gone for more to throw again on second down Prescott a quick throw there going to be batted away incomplete that's a really nice job there by the covers understanding that they're in a high stake situation if he doesn't make a play on that ball there's an excellent chance it ends up either as a touchdown or as a nice game downfield the offense on third down tonight a perfect four for four thus far here it's third and two Prescott yet again touchdown three touchdown passes now for Dak Prescott and they're able to add on to their advantage or just a sensational start for this offense Charles three drives three passing touchdowns is that like mentioning a perfect game in baseball are we cool to do it here in football pardon no I think you can do it here in football I think perfect game in baseball that that's its own category yeah I think you're right about that could not imagine a worse start for that secondary or less base and a better one for this offense no chance to stop passing now the way that it's going I think we can continue to press the ball downfield and hopefully reap the same results the extra point splits the uprights and that makes it a 21-10 game the kit team out there for the Cowboys as they run up to send this one away and Davis continued just to bring this out to the 25-yard line and now out on the field Here Comes Los Angeles a strong showing their last time out they scored the touchdown but Charles they looked up and they're still down double digits so you feel like just to keep Pace this drive probably needs to end in the end zone as well yeah I think the best move for them is to not worry about how far they are down on the scoreboard but to just remember the last drive and how it ended go ahead and try and repeat that then you can look at the scoreboard and see where this game is play action it's Herbert he's got a man it's his fullback yeah this will be a gain of five as he gets it to the 30. well there's nothing open down the field so give him credit for his patience and not forcing it showed a lot of confidence in his big man to just swing it out to the fullback and they got some good yardage out of it ball on the 30. they'll come up with a second and five now it's Herbert his throw incomplete to this point to work defensively they have not allowed a lot of receivers to run free and there's another example another incompletion [Applause] they come up now third and five following the incomplete pass draw Play It's Eckler no gain there on the play and that's going to leave him with a fourth down [Applause] stuffed that one up in a big way I think Dublin him has to be a priority because you can't move up to the next level if you don't take care of him first [Applause] on fourth down J.K Scott ready to putt it away [Applause] that'll be a 48-yard punt one yard on the return and the Cowboys will take over the football with a first and 10. Tony Pollard and his Dallas teammates ready again on offense a good job in the passing game decent job in the running game but really they've been more effective through the air we'll see if that shifts at all as this goes on thus far it feels like they're calling this game in Reverse normally you run to set up the pass here it feels like they're passing hoping to set up the run and be more effective later on in the game you can do it both ways we usually talk about it in the reverse however no doubt about it and he's got some space here and he gets this one just shy of the 40 down at the 39. 65 yards for him on the ground so far tonight as he has been terrific in this first half mother damage has been dug through the air I mean they've rung the Bell three times with passing touchdowns but guess what ground game has now been neglected nice little burst right there [Applause] and we've hit the two-minute Mark in this first half of action so from the 39 now they'll come up on a First and Ten gonna run again here with Pollard and he'll just plow right into a host of tackles nothing there at all and it'll be second and ten that's a mountain of a man that just made me he's more than that Nimble and quick so after the run for No Gain here's second and ten Prescott now yeah quick throw here that's complete they get six that'll leave them with third and four let's not quibble about the game there on second down that was a positive play because that was a take what you can guess situation got out to the tight end now gives a much better opportunity to convert on third down an extra defensive back on the field for the Chargers now on third down looking to throw Prescott he finds his man complete it's Ferguson and he will have a Cowboys first down by about a yard it's a gain of five on third and four now a timeout called four by the offense as they'll stop it with just over a minute to go before halftime let's go man [Applause] Prescott now from the 50. quick throw knocked away it's incomplete this could be the start of a nice stand from this defense now for getting walked backwards on this drive come through with another one here and they have them staring at a third and long and that puts the defense into position to dictate to the offense an incomplete pass on first down that leads to a second and ten to the air again Prescott over the middle hauled in by lamb the Cowboys going to use their second timeout now as they get the stoppage with a little over 50 seconds to go in the first half [Applause] trying to keep the drive going here this is play number seven on Third and two here's Prescott gonna take a shot for Gallup and that will be incomplete well they weren't scared to let it fly but it falls to the ground and brings up fourth down well it hasn't been a banner first half for the defense trying to cover him today but they'll take that one right there helping force that incompletion on fourth down here's Brian anger now to kick this one away [Applause] and that'll hit in the end zone much too much leg there that'll be a Touchback the Chargers going to take over now late in this first half without much time remains here in this first half we'll see if they can get something out of this drive at least a field goal they could certainly use it down by two scores [Applause] Herbert on first down now then a penalty flag comes in as that one winds up incomplete but the contact is gonna move the ball well downfield well obviously they never want to see penalties on that defense but this one a little bit more significant there on the downfield pass play and coaches preach it all the time you can't put yourself in that kind of position if you're the defender you've got to stay in a spot far downfield where you can play the ball without creating extra contact a First and Ten here and you know if they could just get three out of this something about whittling it to a one score game at half that might provide a psychological boost now left he's got it to Everett the charger is going to signal for the first of their timeouts as the clock will stop with 33 seconds to go in the first half [Applause] you ready [Applause] so here's a First and Ten at the 38. Justin Herbert looking to pass he's airing it out for Williams it's incomplete took a shot cut couldn't connect and I think they'd be well served to take that type of a physical approach against him the rest of the game he's had his way so far but on that last one that worked quite well for the defense so after the incompletion on first now second and ten [Applause] to throw here Herbert on the make this one pretty simple locked up all of his progressions downfield forced to get it to his running back but how about the way they ran to the football and knocked him down to force a fourth down the Chargers will bring out the field goal unit now it'll be spotted on the right Hash A 52-yard attempt and this one is no good he missed it and they will remain two scores down as the difference holds at 11. and now two problems as I see it first you missed the kick which granted was a long one but second you set the other guy's up a great field position and enough time to maybe get downfield and get a field goal attempt of Their Own [Applause] about set for this next drawn by the Cowboys offense and with time quickly fading here in the second quarter not sure how aggressively offensively they want to play this I think we'll find out just how much they trust their guys in this situation if they decide to take a shot now whistles in a timeout with three seconds left in the first half and it's been the passing game that's been the story they have feasted on the secondary to the tune of 200 plus yards already through two quarters meanwhile for the Chargers they too were able to take advantage of a soft secondary as both of these two teams really threw the ball at will in that first half all right coach thank you and we welcome everyone back for quarter number three [Applause] 3rd quarter the Cowboys will get the football first here and they have the lead as well as we are underway in core three from a yard or two deep here comes a return and he'll be brought down shy of the 20s so the decision to bring it out of the end zone not a good one out come the Cowboys now as he'll go on offense first here in this third quarter foreign [Applause] at their own 18. they'll try and start this drive in the air forced out to his left and he works his way past the line of scrimmage and then slides to a hole they'll wind up getting right about four there on the scramble and it's second down I certainly like what he did right there because he smartly wanted to avoid forcing anything downfield because nothing appeared to be open nice harmless slide there to avoid the big hit and he gets a small gain on the play they run Straight Ahead here with Pollard and he can muster only a couple here to the 24. just not a whole lot of room to operate there on that carry no not at all they did a really nice job staying in their proper places and not allowing any lanes to open up and it looks like we've got a dime set here defensively six DBS in the game from the gun catch it on the left sideline but they're going to rule him out of bounds so it'll be incomplete certainly one they'd like to have back as it brings up fourth down sometimes the game is pretty simple put a few extra defensive backs on the field give them nowhere to throw the football Force the incompletion and get off the field on third down here's Brian anger now as he'll kick it away for the second time [Applause] a 46-yard punt four-yard return and it'll be Charger football here as they take over now a look at the Chargers offense they get ready for their first possession of the second half their defense did its job by forcing the punt to start things out and now Charles can the offense get in gear I think partner you can sense them say and okay the first half was theirs but now let's get the momentum back on our side we force the punt now let's go down field and score if we do that we'll be set up well for the second half they started on the ground with Eckler gets around him a gain of three second down well they still have time to get him established but in my estimation they've got to pick up the urgency here they've got to get quickly in and out of the Huddle and run off a bunch more plays [Applause] three yards on that last carry here's second and seven Herbert they'll find Everett there complete just a gain of a couple there and it brings up third and five now I know sometimes we can get 40 we'll watch him make catches as we just saw him do there because he really looks like a wide receiver the way he goes about his business yeah 230 240 range yeah not not super huge maybe not counted on to be that in line point of attack blocker that we used to have in the good old days but you can Flex him out you can run wide receiver routes with him he can make him a primary target and that's how he'll throw the defense throwing there but this pass is going to wind up incomplete and we're into the second half now and this is an offense that continues to struggle to sustain a drive looks like they're just totally out of sync whether they're running the ball passing the ball like we saw there I don't know the Rhythm seems off [Applause] on is the punter Scott here as he gets this one away fair catch signaled for and taken at about the 15-yard line so a change of possession here on the punt and they will take over First and Ten and out now come to Cowboys the screw had to punt last time they had the ball but when you've got a lead like this you can tend to play the field position game you are to an extent especially if you like your defense because you have the lead you've been controlling the game but why put them in a tougher spot you ought to get out there and get something done on offense and maybe take command to this game yourself Prescott looks to throw on first he finds his man complete it's Ferguson they gave up the completion there but this is what zone defenses count on catching the ball and not much run after the catch [Applause] now a shotgun hand off to Pollard and he's able to get up here to the 26. two yards good enough through first but we always talk about good down and distance allowing offenses to expand their playbook well second and two that means your playbook's wide open you can run just about anything but a lot of times the play caller he just looks down at his sheet sees the short yardage runs and goes to one of those [Applause] first down throw for Prescott and that's complete to Cooks and that's good for a pickup of 10 yards and that'll leave him with a second and just a few inches left one of the selling points at the end route is against the quarterback a really nice sight line to his receiver and almost on a direct shot able to throw the ball into the middle of the field and have a great chance of success as they did on that play on second and inches Prescott he finds his man complete Miss Ferguson and able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down eighth catch for him now he's been a big factor and it's a first down and now we get into the psychology of the whole thing because a lot of teams with a two score lead in the third quarter they almost become defensive with their offense just playing not to lose I think with this team you got to figure at this point this is a great spot for them to go into Attack Mode really try and put the hammer down and finish this one off a couple of first downs to kick off the drive here's First and Ten up at the 46. it'll be a handoff to Pollard they'll be taken down at the 48 for a pickup of two yards it's a little bit discouraged after that play shaking their heads a bit looking at each other I think they thought they'd get a lot more out of that call sometimes you do get the running Lane you want and other times the defensive front they just break up the play before it can get going the last run good for two here's second and eight out of the gun here's Prescott throw complete right side to Cooks and he's brought to the ground with another first down at the Chargers 38-yard line they give them 14 yards that time and a fresh set of downs and this was a nice example of an offensive coordinator scheming his guy open just a little underneath route just trying to free up some space and it worked awfully well got him not just space but plenty of room to run after the catch to pick up really nice yardage so from charger territory now here's a First and Ten at the 38. there's Prescott able to hit his Target lamb and he'll be taken down at about the 22-yard line [Applause] I'll tell you what a lot of those mid-range throws have been available because sometimes teams get too concerned about the Deep ball and they leave too much space in front of them and these guys have been taking advantage so far Prescott on first down cook some a quick slant and brought down but not before they get it inside to 10 to the seven a good gain again that's now 31 yards combined on those last two plays just picking up yardage and bunches here these last few plays they have moved right down the field and just like that they're gonna be set up with a first and goal foreign two big plays in succession not sure this D knows what hit them but now they got to get ready it's first and goal now a give here to Pollard and he's able to get it down to the two-yard line five yards a good run there and now second and goal it's larger been the Air Attack has gotten them down here but now's where you start to lean on that running game that's a good pickup there on first and goal from the two now second and goal to throw his press gun steps away to his left and he'll just Chuck this one up into row G it's incomplete I see the surprise in your face there partner that is a rare incompletion from him he's been on point this entire game he has percentage completion Wise Way up not that time [Applause] stonewalled on second down now let's see what they can do on Third and goal from the two Pollard is in Touchdown Dallas that drive that really increased their cushion it's all very military to me very precise methodical as one of the words you've taught me and they just got it done and slowly but surely now starting to pull away a little bit things looking good for them here in the third quarter not only pulling away but you mentioned that slowly but surely he also drained clock too with a drive like that so you really give yourself an advantage thank you thanks for Point fourth coming and the lead is up to 18 now so that one a long 11 play drive and it's culminated by a two-yard touchdown run the kick team out there for the Cowboys as they run up to send this one away and here comes a return from just beyond the goal line and the decision to come out of the end zone is going to cost him five yards as he's taken down right at the 20. here's a Los Angeles offense as they get set to take possession I kind of feel like they've reached a Do or Die point in this game Charles if they're going to try to pull off an impressive comeback it has to start right here right now yeah now they've got a final chance to get out of this situation but they also so they can get two more possessions Herbert setting up to throw on first down trying to get it to Williams but it's intercepted picked off by Stefan Gilmore and are going to take possession of the football well still down quite a bit here several scores but yeah at least that's a start Charles getting the interception here and look we're still in the third quarter so this thing not done yet you're right about that Brandon this defense they haven't quit on this game they stayed with it and got an interception and handed the ball back to their offense and what you wonder about is a team that just threw that interception they've got to be careful about developing a sense of complacency and thinking this game is over [Applause] foreign from the 32 now here's First and Ten now a handoff up the middle Pollard and he struggles to get a yard here maybe a yard down to the 31. it has a really nice play to be able to stack that one up but they get back into Hull he's got to tell his guys up front great job they kept people off of it allowed him to run free and make the hit on the runner filled the Gap nicely kept him to just a one-yard game they go back to Pollard on second down it's a four-yard pickup there and it leaves him with third and five Well you certainly have to give a little credit here because they're playing this game now at their Pace this is ball control football sustained runs taking their time and making it work they had great starting position to begin the drive and now they look up at a third and five from the shotgun it's Prescott he finds his man complete it's Ferguson and he will have a Cowboys first down as he's able to get eight yards there on Third and five many different ways to create space but on that play he did it with that big wide body of his didn't get a whole lot of yardage on to play but it did what it was supposed to pick up a first down so here's a First and Ten now down inside the 20. now Prescott going right back to Ferguson and they're going to be set up now with a ball at the 13-yard line there on first down he located his tight end made it nice easy pitching catch hoping he can break a tackle or two wasn't able to do that there but still good yardage [Applause] second down at four here's Pollard and he is going to be stopped cold behind the line of scrimmage they'll wind up losing three and now it's third down sometimes you just sit back and Marvel at what he can do defensively speed strength quickness he's the whole package and that package just wrapped up the runner for a loss on third down it's Prescott open man lamb it's complete touchdown Cowboys Jack Prescott with a connection to CD lamb as his guys have opened up a very comfortable lead well he has been fun to watch throwing the football on this one it's certainly not fun for that defense though Charles now up to four touchdown passes in this ball game yeah we're supposed to be neutral but I'm feeling their pain right now because he has absolutely carved up the secondary a clinic on how to attack a defense and take them out of the game now the try here for the pulling after and he's been a busy man five for five now as he knocks another one through to extend the lead so the drive there took six plays and it's finished off by the touchdown from CD lamb the kick team out there for the Cowboys as they run up to send this one away from a couple yards deep he'll bring it out of the end zone and they'll get him down right around the 25 actually the 26 officially so a net gain of one there the Chargers ready to take over but we haven't exactly been treated to a nail biter in this one CD and if they cannot score here this one's pretty much all but over are you saying that you feel like people are starting to think about getting out of here maybe beating the traffic in order to get home or to their final destination uh yeah I don't think there's a whole lot of reason to hang around especially if they can't score here yeah you're right about that because it has been pretty clear who the better team has been in this one and in a league that we talk about every game being a one score game as we go into it watching this blowout let's just say it's been unusual called at a very strong gain of 24. an excellent run there coming from out wide and we used to considered these jet sweeps to be Gadget plays or something a little bit unusual right but now most teams have some version of this play in their playbook and I think it's a lot because of the receivers that are being developed nowadays these guys look like running bats even though they're playing out on the perimeter but now a throw on first down there but it's incomplete had an open man that time they ended up putting a little too much heat on it don't you think partner absolutely just needed a touch more air under it instead he fired an absolute bullet well thanks for joining us here on a Thursday night in the NFL third quarter second and ten coming up from the 50. here's Herbert Allen's got it complete and he's going to have another first down here as the tackles made at the Cowboys 36. a really nice pickup of 14 yards and it moves the sticks but maybe this offense has learned something from watching their counterparts work I'm wondering if their coaching staff said let's do what they've been doing the entire game because that's worked well this offense they have not looked particularly good all game long but nice throw there for a good game and a first down and nothing much materializing there on the first down run he'll get a couple and that's it well this defensive got the four score advantage and you can see why they continue to bottle up the Run game and really they've just been sharp in all facets here in this one CD yeah it kept that offense in check the entire game and I think it's been led by what you just talked about that defensive front which has not allowed them to run the football and establish control of the line of scrimmage they follow up the gain of two with a gain of one that time that ground game just continues to struggle to really get any momentum in this ball game Charleston I mean you're at the point here third quarter down four scores probably going to have to put it in the air oh no question about it so that's your only chance your only opportunity but think of the pressure you just put on your offensive line because if you're a pass rusher you're not even thinking about them running the football all you're doing and he can't get rid of it he's taken down that time multiple Defenders getting pressure and it's a loss of sex what does it really matter sometimes it's just a great play made by the defense big time sack [Applause] thanks one quarter remains here in this Thursday night matchup you're watching the NFL on EA Sports back now it's sofie's stadium in Inglewood it's Charger football but they Trail here as we get going in quarter number four okay down [Applause] 4th quarter fourth down for Herbert desperation time he's gonna let this go back to the end zone and this one is incomplete the fourth down play doesn't work for the Chargers and the Cowboys defense is going to get them the football back that's another mistake there on the drop pass on Fourth and we've seen him do things like this all game it's not hard to figure out why they're down by that deficit they haven't made plays that are going to keep them in the game or win the game all game long that's another example right there it all boils down at the end of it to execution either you make the play or you don't [Applause] good starting field position for him as they come up First and Ten at the 40. [Applause] they'll run with Pollard to begin the drive as strong running there as he's across Midfield and down to the 49. 91 yards on the ground for him now as he has gotten better really as the night's going on well that's a carry they have to be satisfied with and throughout this game they've been satisfied with what he's given them whenever they've needed a big run a first down he's the guy they turn to and it doesn't matter what the defense thinks it's like they've got the confidence to keep handing it to him and keep picking up good yardage [Applause] first down and it's Pollard again they had a pretty athletic run right there as he's going to get this down inside the 40. 11 yards there just like last play No Doubt those are the types the carries they're looking for here Charles the lead in the fourth quarter this is when coaches that have a reliable running game they breathe a little easier on the sideline yeah they love the idea that they can take the air out of the football at this point of the game that means they're really counting on that offensive line counting on the runners taking care of the football because you're going to tell your quarterback hey no time to be a hero we're not going to throw it here just eat up that clock and if you have the ball they can't score and they will only muster a yard here to the 38. run blitz there defensively something we might see more of here in the fourth quarter I think we'll see a lot of it and the difference between that and a pass Blitz passport just trying to get to the quarterback you're trying to scheme someone open who will get to the QB and make sure he gets on the ground in a run blitz you're actually trying to cover up gaps trying to cover up holes so they can't run the football jumping early from his tight ends Bob may be trying to get a jump start on that route yeah I think you're exactly right about that and oftentimes when you see that that means the play call was supposed to come in his Direction and he was eager to go catch a pass they'll try to throw now Prescott now they set up the screen that's complete oh he's heading lots of football put it on the carpet and picked up by the Chargers or maybe it hasn't exactly been a Rembrandt but even mistake three to this point and finally cough it up I don't think it's gonna cost him the game they should be fine but boy they're going to hate that going back and watching tape and being able to say you're that close to achieving our goal of zero turnovers during the game a little blemish but as you say still comfortably in command thank you Herbert going to lead up the Chargers here First and Ten at the 34. they'll come out throwing here to start the drive sideline throw it's complete and a nice job there of keeping the toes inbounds will go down as a gain of six and it'll be second down I do have to admit I like it when it all comes together when the top part catching the football right whether you're catching with your hands or cradling it comes together with the legs in this case the feet did a little toe tap to stay in bounds and complete the catch and a great job by our crew on the camera shot love when you see the grass or on the field Turf those rubber pellets flying up great catch that he's going to get this down to the 35-yard line that one good for 26 and a first down over this game well in hand perhaps we are seeing the coverage lighten up a little bit as they got burned there a bit for a first down but we certainly know the coach isn't happy along the sideline because he certainly wants him to finish this one out the way they started it he doesn't want to give up any soft completions no late point he wants his lead to stay right where it is and he'll be brought down at about the 23-yard line well this game was decided a while ago and that completion there is going to artificially inflate his passing numbers so right now the only one really applauding probably agent as he thinks about angling for a new contract so signs of life and what's been a dormant offense in this second half here's First and Ten Herbert throwing again it's complete to Williams and down inside the 15 shy of the 10. 11 more yards that go around a first down as well well this game is certainly pretty well over then go ahead and Mark it in the win column but as a defense they don't want to get so soft now that everybody just throws the ball all over the place against them gets big yardage and puts points on the board they have pride too on that side of the ball [Applause] running on first down Eckler down to the six yard line on a pickup of six as he gets halfway to the goal line they've created a nice sustained Drive off of plays like that a nice strong run there that keeps him advancing the ball the last run got six now second and four [Applause] once more here's heckler just a yard on the pickup there and it'll leave him with a third and three they know they know this question it's not my knife it hasn't been his so far I don't know if the legs are a little bit heavy sometimes having to hang out all day and play doesn't exactly play to your advantage but it's been a tough go for him every time he looks up somebody's there defensively that was the same case on that play Herbert on third down down touchdown Chargers Mike Williams on a touchdown throw from Justin Herbert and the Chargers are able to cut into that deficit that's just how they drew it up CD his first read was there got it to him quickly and into the end zone absolutely excellent execution by all involved in the coordinator Gotta Give him credit found the perfect play called quarterback Let it Fly as soon as the target game play and his guy hit a nice catch just how you draw it up in practice and then execute it in the game the kickoff team on the field now as they will send this one away and he'll just sit on this one as their Drive will start at the 25. now Dallas gets set to take the field I'm sure the message as they come out onto the field was hey take care of the football because the fumble last possession led to a touchdown still a three-score game though you don't want things to start to snowball you know one error leads to another which leads to another then all of a sudden you're fighting for your life down the stretch instead of finishing the game in style which is what they're trying to do on this drive yeah we'll be a pretty amazing comeback but we've seen crazier things happen in the National Football League we certainly have so the drive is going to start with Pollard room here to run and they worked this well up field across the 45. 125 yards rushing for now as his big night continues it carries like that that's how they're going to continue to Salt this thing away here Charles in the fourth quarter yeah how about that new set of downs clock continues to move no better way to close out a game than to tap those mastodons you have up front say guys keep pounding them let's keep the ball keep their offense on the sidelines and let's close this one out they'll go with Pollard here on first down and a good run here as he'll Rumble all the way down to the 40-yard line another good gain that's now 35 yards combined on those last two plays and I'm guessing you'd say this is kind of the key here grind out some yardage work on that clock see if you can continue to take it down definitely you want to bleed things out at this point right continue to possess the football gain some yardage and put the onus on the defense do they have to use timeouts what are they going to do to stop you you're taking charge so from charger territory now here's a First and Ten right at the 40. here's Pollard again and he gets forward up the middle but only for a couple it'll be second down Brandon I've got to think this offensive line has got some Smiles on his faces and I know it sounds crazy but they practice for this back in training camp they knew they'd be in situations where it'd be extra defenders in the Box coming after him trying to keep them from walking down the game right now they want to show the world they're up to the challenge on second down Davis and he has met quickly in the backfield down he goes folded like a lawn chair a yard in the wrong direction makes third down tougher third down and nine that was well played there defensively two tight ends in the formation which essentially gave them seven blockers up front hard to imagine with all that size and beef that they could let a tackler through but that's exactly what happened resulted and this defense not ready for that one as he'll take this down inside the 25. give him 15 there and the Cowboys have a first Brandon when a defense just simply can't get off the field on third down and we all know how important that down is for both sides of the ball you often feel like you're just a step behind whatever they're doing offensively and one of the differences in this game no doubt third down conversion and that is going to be a story they'll talk about after this one all runs on this drive so far it's First and Ten now Pollard and he works his way forward to pick up four yards there second down they're picking us about right now with a convincing lead I think this is where they put on the boxing gloves start to try and pound them into submission and the offensive line they've controlled this game I don't see why that Trend would change now following the pickup of four here's second and six Prescott now got his man there complete to Gallup and they're going to be set up now with the ball at the 13-yard line [Applause] [Applause] from the third team now they work on First and Ten Prescott to throw it firing quickly here and that's complete and that's good for a gain of six and it'll be second down not a big window to throw coverage wasn't too bad there yeah they had him under rounds pretty well but somehow able to muscle his way open and catch the ball four yards to go on second down from the seven now press gun and incomplete and a lot of being a Defender is being able to learn what you can and can't get away with winning man coverage in this case he got away with it it helped pop that ball free now they face a third down and four after that incompletion on second down Prescott throwing for his running back and he's got it complete and he'll be Stout well short only two yards there fourth and three how about that strategy there Brandon third down they just said we got faith in our tackles we'll give you the short stuff and just decided to protect the sticks so every time I hear fans telling me tackling's not a part of the game anymore plays like that I can clip and save and show them you have to tackle well if you want to be a good defense Prescott to throw on Fourth down Jack Prescott with a connection to CD lamb and the Cowboys decision to go for it pays off with six points now you wonder now if he might be able to remove the helmet put on the baseball cap and watch the rest of this one from the sideline his fifth touchdown pass of the game say that again did you say fifth touchdown pass in the game yes sir but that's a heck of a performance isn't it because they've had no answer for him at all all game long receivers have been open constantly and he hasn't missed a single one of them now for the point after and they open the lead up now to 25 points a pretty long drive that time 11 plays all told and it's finished off by the touchdown from CD lamb [Applause] set now to kick this one away and off it goes fielded just outside the goal line and he returns this to the 22. Mike Williams at his charger offense getting set for the next series and I know that they've double teamed him a couple times but not a ton but whatever they're doing isn't working he's up over 100 yards we'll see how they adjust and when they do that they weaken their defense in other places as well and how many times have we done games where we've seen a guy have a big game like this but it's usually not by himself is it usually it opens it up for other people to have big games as well Herbert and the Chargers now with a First and Ten at their own 22. they'll try and start this drive in the air well he still makes a catch even though it was tapped by the linebacker give him a gain of five on the completion and it's second down you got the big lead defensively willing to give him that underneath stuff right and this is why you work on your tackling tackle him after the catch inbounds keep the clock running just go ahead and bleed the game out that way from the 28 it's second and five now it's Herbert and this one incomplete too much contact to hold on to that one and it's third down now the trials and tribulations of being a quarterback in this league it's tough it's got to be wearing on him out there well he has been sacked a number of times he had an interception so I'm gonna give him a skosh of credit for hanging in there and trying to make something happen despite the amount of pressure he's been under this entire game here's Herbert he finds his man complete it's Johnston and he is going to have the Chargers first down as they're able to get the third down conversion but he can absolutely feel the thought process there they just gave up the touchdown so in the Huddle they're telling each other you don't want to give it back now on a three and out nice job of making sure that they wouldn't and they pick up the first down just two minutes remaining here in the fourth quarter of what has been a one-sided Affair so it's Charger football as we welcome you back from the two-minute warning they've got a first in Tennessee search for a late score and Herbert able to get this one to Eckler out of the backfield this will be stopped about two yards shy of the marker eight-yard gain second and two just about every quarterback is trained to really look downfield first before you come back and make a nice safe throw and in this case that's exactly what he did found his running back let him create some space and it turned out to be a nice play for the offense again Herbert now left he's got it to Everett and he's going to have another first down here as the tackles made at the Cowboys 43. the Chargers passing game rolling a bit here they've got another first he's certainly done a nice job spreading the field on this drive and here he finds his big tight end for good yardage and that's what you have to do keep defense is guessing about where you're going to go with the football on first down it's Herbert he's got a man that's Keenan Allen and to the 36-yard line taken down there after getting eight yards [Applause] they're going to need to get up and set in a hurry off the plate fake to Eckler it's Herbert over the middle complete that's Johnston and he's going to have another first down here as the tackles made at the Cowboys 19. the Chargers passing game rolling a bit here they've got another first and the Chargers gonna signal for the first to their timeouts as they'll stop him with a little over 30 ticks to go in the football game [Applause] so here's a First and Ten now down inside the 20.
