Caroline Wozniacki vs. Renata Zarazua Full Match | 2024 US Open Round 2

out by far her most successful service surface is this one 24 of her 30 titles have come on hard yeah I remember playing her when she was number one in the world in Denmark the draw had just come out and I asked oh supervisor oh can you tell me who you who I play and she looked at me she said you don't want to know yeah wasaki in Denmark it was tough out 13 15 so when she hung up her racket was niaki it was at the 2020 Australian Open so she was gone for three years came back last year and said and again she's got two little kids she said the hardest part to get back was the physical part she has mentioned that she's dealing with a couple more injuries than maybe she would have liked she mentioned she's like oh I'm not 20 years old anymore out I think she's also been much more selective with her schedule she talked about how maybe before she would have panicked a little bit about playing so few tournaments last year she stopped after US Open put the rackets down for the rest of the season it's clean hold to start us off that's one of the things that we've just seen progressively with the sport of tennis people just taking such good care their body is playing so much longer take your seats quickly please ladies and gentlemen Qui please thank you he long oh I like the way thata is playing she's not doing too much with the ball right now it's can be quite difficult especially Under The Lights new stadium this has got to be one of the bigger stadiums that she's ever played I was thinking the same thing that's exactly right Arena especially with nighttime too just that contrast 13 15 trying to shake out the nerves does that work I've always found jumping actually really helps me okay just jumping really really high just letting it all out 14 15 it's that's nice St that's a nice hole from zarazua she did a really good job there just didn't do too much just did enough but anticipated this shot really well took care of her feet gave herself enough margin great Target there nice quiet head it's pretty good she will have a lot of experience playing under these lights oh yes well that's what she said she you know she retired she was 29 years old this was back in 2020 she said I've already done so much in my career I've ticked off most of the goals I'd set but I'm back because I love to compete she says I feel like I still have a lot to give yeah I think it also helps too that she's got absolutely Limitless support from her family which is so important and the fact and she has that luxury of being able to travel with her kids that's not a lot of players have that and to have a supportive husband as well to say okay let's let's take care of your dream here service there's David Lee her husband former basketball player played in New York for a while also he loves new got an apartment here at a young age 14 [Applause] from where you speak yep priorities change a little bit I think that's the one thing that zaru is going to have to make sure that she just gets a lot of depth on her shots when I was watching that match against Garcia she was able to pull out the win but just a lot of short balls Garcia Shar some of the abuse she she had some shots of uh the stuff she had just terrible terrible things and and she says a a lot of the problem is that all the bedding that goes on right you know and you know people lose some some dough on on you and they just say awful things they make fun of you through your family as Coco says everybody so many players joined in when carolene Garcia talked about her loss to Saro and she said it's one thing for betting you know yeah betting happens but for tennis to be all in on so much gambling right I'm with her all the way by the way especially the women get so much online abuse yeah it's got to be difficult because after a great win you want to see those wonderful messages right from all the fans and all the sponsors and everything but you're afraid to read some of them right right there's obviously that dark side and I remember a lot of times I would just shut off the comments that's the best thing you can do you just remove that ability to be able to comment because then it's you know out of sight out of mind do a lot of the women do that now well this is the other thing you also want to engage with people and so you want to keep that engagement open and so it's a it's a catch 22 and yeah they find ways to get to you that's the other thing I remember they would they would write to my husband they would write different things to my husband on yeah that's nice stuff I don't know how many backhand to backand rallies zzu wants to get into with Waki that might not be a great idea just throwing that out there wasaki so she's made over $36 million in prize money alone how many of those Millions have come off of her backand a lot a lot she just disguises it so well you really just have no idea where she's going to go with it yeah it's almost as though she just holds on to the ball as much as she can before making that final decision here it is again she can wait on it can't she yeah absolutely great Target too she knew she would have gotten a short ball from it [Applause] leads three games to one first another reminder about usopen.org a lot has gone on today uh again some of some of the stuff not that great to hear about but you might want to read about it catch up on the draws and uh everything else that's happened again if you're just joining us mova has taken out Naomi Osaka Osaka a great hardcore player two Australian opens two US opens but she's out second round that was a tough matchup it was a that was a bad draw for both of them yeah absolutely out 50 long out up 14 L 13 15 yeah that was a 65 mph gift for zarua there so one thing I'd like to see her maybe get that second look opportunity just apply a little bit more pressure get inside an 88 mph Ace this look like it should be she'll be happy though with this year she's cracked the top 100 for the very first time after 10 years of being on tour her brother being her coach Patricia zarua been there in her corner so wait a minute so you you've known Caroline for years now yep Arena yep has she got it in her head that she can win another major what do you think and is that the dream what is her goal at this stage cuz she's kind of vague about it what do you think she thinks cuz surely with that the serve that she's got I mean she's been serving some second in the 60s right she can't think that's going to win her another major right you just got to wonder though you see that tape in her shoulder you want you wonder about the injuries I think she's she wants to play to as healthy as she as she can play yeah very nice that's great hitting there by zarua getting a lot of depth there's her team that's a little team her brother Trio been there for a long time in her corner it's great to have someone that knows you so well you know now back to your question though Mary I think for her she's been she's she's experienced enough to know uh what her body can take and I think the biggest thing for her is also her family she wants to know whether her kids want to keep traveling as much I mean it can be a lot to travel with two children you just wonder it's the Firepower that I wonder especially with the tough hitters someone like shvan the amount of Racket head speed she's able to produce you see the sabinka that that pace that power yeah [Applause] I think that's the one thing she has spoken about she's trying to be a little bit more aggressive which is not exactly her game and that can be difficult to kind of change up especially this late in the career but she's aware of how the game is transitioning out love that [Applause] [Music] what good does that tape do on her arm Arena know what's that for the soreness what is it that's a good question Mary that was a nice drop shot and as it hit it tailed off didn't it yeah I love that play especially for someone like wasaki that can get quite a lot of depth you want to open up that the rest of the Court knowing that your opponent is going to be standing so far back and zarua has been standing camping out a little bit too far behind the Baseline right wow this first set was in go away there's nothing that can really break down in her game she might be able to get overpowered but I don't think from the pace that I don't think it would be from waki's Pace today just in those last couple of games some un first erors from Caroline she's got 10 now against five winners and normally Arena both her numbers winners and onforce erors are quiet right they're not usually lopsided like that that's usually the other way around yeah exactly right to give credit to zeru being able to playing these conditions playing a big stage at one of the loudest I think courts here uh other than Ash maybe but this this Stadium can get very Rowdy Under The Lights she's handling the moment quite well I think yeah she is was a wonderful redirect there by zeru really having a lot of length on that backand I think it really had to do with the fact that she was inside the Baseline helped her out a little bit out 15 14 that's a nice drive and that gives her the break back on serve I'm sorry 5-3 for wasaki yeah didn't really give herself much margin there no 71 weeks at number one in the world that's incredible to be able to I mean she she had some tough competition too she was playing amongst the best and to be able to just weak in and week out she finally got that major she'd been looking for the 2018 Australian Open and what a final remember against H oh yeah now Hal didn't have a slam either so didn't matter who won someone was going to be have their Maiden one that was an exciting match you do Wonder though what what what else could she achieve she just missed this stuff second she also says her two kids travel very well they adjust well very social kids yeah they'll show up to a house and her daughter Olivia will say oh wow this is really nice and Caroline will say don't get used to it and she's like well this is my room now yeah exactly and she spoke about you know it's so great for them to meet new people new relationships new cultures oh man a little crowd support there yeah she didn't give herself much margin there but once again using that backand down the line redirect gave herself so much shape above the net especially in the highest part great balance throughout that forehand yeah I think i' I'd go after zaro's forehand too right yeah especially off that second serve she sliced it made zarua reach a little bit now she's got a set point six games to three she's got to be pretty happy with that right doesn't seem like she felt a lot of tension in that opening set right I wouldn't say that she felt a lot of tension but I wouldn't say that it was her cleanest either right okay I I think that rally wasaki what is she well that's move that's going to be a tough ass out rallying wasaki all right let's see if second the second set looks any different from the first yeah that's great job there by naaki just defending really well if I were to be coaching zaru right now I think the one thing I would say is maybe just continue to go for your shots maybe go more down the line and open up the court a little bit more maybe come forward just give her a different look cuz if there's one thing wasaki can do is run she can run all day is [Applause] out there's a little bit of that aggression that I think she's working on maybe going for a shot she typically wouldn't yeah 27 shot rally remember uh you talk about her Fitness level l i remember when she entered the New York City marathon first marathon ever got like a really oh yeah like a time like I think it was under 3:30 or something yeah ridiculous it was during the season too I mean it yeah it was no big deal yeah oh it's a beautiful drive yeah that's the one thing I would like to see her just do a little bit more find herself inside the Baseline I feel as though she's camping out behind a little bit too much but look at here she had a little bit of time and just got followed that ball after the shot obviously in that she was still behind the Baseline but once she's finished very much inside I really think she's going for those down the lines a little bit more than before did well with making sure it was unreturnable too wer prepared for that one nice way to start this second set first game second set 15 leg for service out so I'll toss the question right back at you what would you tell tasua if you were in her ear right now I'd say grow okay I've lost Irena for a while I'll just talk on my own oh another error 15 13 14 now from Waki now actually she I like I I like the way zaru I wouldn't tell her to grow I mean that's asking a bit much she's viously done grow and the fact is she's a she's a quick little ground hugger right right right she stays very low yeah she does I wasn't trying to be funny okay uh you know what why don't you just you know just take a quick break here see I've corrupted another one great you're right though Arena I mean it's not like she's playing the cleanest match wasaki what she was boy she still knows how to throw down a point huh how to construct a rally oh absolutely I mean I think she just moves the ball around so so well and she's doing really well with coming forward yes nine of 13 out that is the side she almost fell to Stow she gave it a little bit more Firepower there on that forand that's what she's able to do so well just give different speeds different spins beautiful she's hitting that wide Deuce pretty well yeah get so much Slice on it yeah to the point where Zara is over very off the court oh wow and look she just keeps walking I love that yeah that's incredible anticipation there by zarua that wasn't a bad approach but zarua just doing such a good job really letting go of that racket full extension yes oh that was too good there by wasaki I feel as though that was the right play just got a little bit too high I would have loved for maybe the drop shot to maybe go middle to not give wasaki an angle angle yeah yeah yeah she knows it too but these second set rallies are more interesting to me yes you know what I mean there every now and then there's a little heat on the ball a little bit you know little bit more disgust guys she gets another one stop doing that you're insulting Caroline she can get anything incredible speed there great anticipation you almost feel as though that may have been a copout drop shot yeah maybe yeah behind the Baseline you're not in great position there just great job by wasaki just taking care of her feet look at how much height she's able to get above the net from being that low to the ground gosh credit to zarua to be able to stay in these long exchanges though this I mean she's one of the best at it I mean I they're both playing the match they want to play right right raki so far is doing a bit better right and I think it's coming down to who can give the short ball first okay there we go moak he's just getting a couple more looks than ranada [Applause] that's the tough part about playing wasaki is that you might win a few points here and there especially in those long exchanges but look at that rallies won nine shots or more they're going on the way of laki there's Juliana OS Mexican doubles player play Olympics with sarua short ball that's the one you were talking about that's just tough she really hasn't had that many looks though is [Applause] yeah that's incredible stamina shot tolerance I think from both players but once again she got inside the Baseline it's that's when she's the most effective exactly all right mopping up well she put her did you put her hat back on no changing it up she might need that hairspray I was thinking the same thing it seems communal remember wasak he handed it back to to yeah part of the ball crew oh her hair is happening now no hairspray for you that looks too cool man 14 13 yeah I'm a big fan of the drop shot especially when you have that ability to hit with a lot of depth that drop Shot opens up she did well here with making sure to stay not get too much height on that out you Advantage both thean great what but I'm talking okay who's serving now Caroline's serving now big admirer big respector of everything that oyaki has done with her career but some of these serves are meatballs right right I mean I that's the one thing that I'm just questioning that we see that tape on the shoulder I I makes you wonder what is that about and in her career she was able to rely on those on her return ability that's the thing she even if she doesn't get that game off her serve she's able to return so well and I mean that's what makes her so dangerous 15 nor and Mary even when she was playing before her children she handled a lot of pace for so long didn't win a slam till literally the very end of her career Right Out 3 for service 14 1 how well do you read lips I was trying to figure it out I speak Spanish but I couldn't even figure that one out okay Yaki now up a set 31 second and ireena Falcone Hartman seems to think that Caroline Waki is going to win this whole thing that's what I'm hearing from you that's fake news I think she's playing exceptionally well okay you think she can handle anyone's Pace I mean she can handle anyone's Pace whether or not she wins that's a different story though okay fair and already baiting me Mary look at you just getting after it first time calling together gosh great little disguise there by sarasua long for 15 on yeah these are those moments in time where you just think that the experience from Caroline playing for so long and being at these at this level and being at this score line 6331 you just feel as though she's just getting better a little bit better and just kind of separating herself a little bit more each point nice you know what my here's my sense of well Zaki and she hasn't lost one bit of this part of her game that I've always really really liked I don't think Caroline was okay why to listen to some Spanish well I mean I think yeah they were just tearing them on but go ahead I'm sorry chearing her on excuse me um I don't think Waki has ever walked off a court having lost and not known why she has lost you know what I mean I I I can't see cuz she's she's got such courtcraft and she understands her opponent's games and what what she can do against them she's never walked up and said wow what the hell did that happen right right yeah she gets beat yeah she gets beat right exactly you got to put the thump on her right [Applause] I think that really speaks volumes that that mental fortitude yeah because for her to be able to just continuously make balls it's just so much pressure that you're getting from her just from that that shot tolerance her defensive skills you have to hit so many shots to produce a winner to get a point from her makes it so difficult to play against for and once again just incredible shot tolerance here by zarua you almost felt as though Caroline maybe pressed on that one I love seeing how long these rallies are it's incredible speaks volumes of zaru Fitness levels as well [Applause] she's he's telling her you have to vary it a little bit vary the shot out just telling her to calm down e all right this [Applause] [Music] and that's great job there by zeru just finding herself inside the Baseline and going for that forehand just put a little bit more Pace on that great shape though above huge net clearance if that had missed if that had landed wide 4-1 I mean that this good could have this is huge it's huge game the difference between 32 and 41 is is Monumental at this level [Applause] outage I like that play from sarasua just going deep to that forand of wasaki and then getting her off the court putting a little bit more Pace more shape and she knows it too out still oh oh my about 11 minutes into this service game and zarura squirts off that backhand line yeah that was great great Court coverage and look at her she's not even inside the Baseline she's off the court that was a huge Point yeah it sure was now she has to do it again yeah no problem outow Beau it's oh it's so good that's incredible tennis from both players but zarua once again just finding control once she's inside the Baseline I think that was the right play from wasaki maybe just didn't get enough length on that but way to go behind her out L 15 [Applause] L that [Applause] 15 let's let that's what she just does so well once again just holding on to the ball as long as as physically possible on that racket out 1 [Applause] out [Applause] [Applause] Beau is out sh up to all [Applause] that goes wide what an expensive game that is for Caroline WI Yaki serving at love 30 something happened to her back called out the trainer got worked on got it back to 30 all but ends up getting broken and now it really it feels like there's nothing between them yeah credit to sarua those last two games were very well fought right oh she's going to go after the Waki forehand isn't she yeah absolutely I think that's 10 unforced for the set and it's not like she's getting overpowered on that side you just wonder how much that back is affecting her execution there on that forehand [Applause] yeah yeah I mean she's just so good from the back you would just wonder just from a fan point of view just from another tennis player's point of view how much better she could have like how much more she could have achieved had she had that net capability and that confidence to come forward I've always been on the notion I don't know if you agree with me on this Mary but the difference between like the top 10 they they know how to come forward they finish at net exceptionally well I I'll I'll tell you Chris ever gave me a terrific interview the other day we're doing a feature on Super Saturday it's the 40th anniversary of the 1984 when just one great match after another including Chrissy and Martina Martina had beaten Chrissy the last 12 times they played and Dennis ralson was her coach at the time and rson said you got to come in take the net away from her MH Chrissy explains Arena that for the first set of that final she attacked and she did it well and she won that set and then she kind of backed off a little bit and Martina and she just didn't she she knew at that point that she lost that one and three and for the first time ever these two were buddies I mean obviously they they went it was 3030 in their rivalry after that final gosh [Music] beautiful that's such a smart play I love going right to the middle doesn't give her exactly but please finish your story no so anyway so Chrissy said she was so disappointed because she didn't continue to do what her coach had told her to do and for the first time at the net Chrissy didn't even say anything to Martina like she was that angry with herself oh man it's a great you you got to hear tell the story it's so interesting but but she beat her the next two French opens 85 and 86 wow and she was aggressive all right so Caroline was Yaki now just a couple of games away from the safety of yeah we had a good ball Club put it that way and he would say under pressure what would you rather hit a volley or a passing shot under pressure under pressure Mr hotman said you want to be at at the net Vol yeah every time every time [Applause] mama still got [Applause] it wow 15 long that was a really tough drop shot too but look at that ability just little flick of the racket there that's just too good out 1 long [Applause] got her gosh she could just do so much with that backand Mary wasn't the best approach she had a lot of room to work with trying to separate herself here that's some hold fight free now leads five games for three second I'm saying yeah you just felt like she elevated her game here in the last six or seven points it was all wasaki mama's still got it you like that that's a line of the night what are you what are you kidding for L 15 team help 15 on here you go ladies and gentlemen in respect for the players please remain quiet during the point thank you [Applause] 15 starting to see that frustration come from zarua just almost you feel as though it's slipping away tell you it's not a fun feeling [Applause] but she's such a fighter that's what makes her so tough to play against I mean took 10 years but to crack the top 100 and to be playing get a WTA singles title doubles title she's so tough out she better not get any online abuse for losing this one not the way carolene Garcia got after zarua beat her in the opening round it's got to stop that's it and two and into the third round all right now she'll be pleased to get that one under her belt it was a hard fought 63 63 I don't think that the score really shows how difficult
