How The PS5 Pro Compares to PC

PlayStation 5 Pro Sony just announced the PlayStation 5 Pro and for the most part Gamers seem to be very unhappy with the announcement this is the rock on Tech and today we're comparing the PlayStation 5 Pro to a gaming PC now the intro says it all today we're taking a look at the PlayStation 5 Pro and we will be comparing it to a gaming PC now let me be honest with you I am a PC Gamer this is a PC gaming YouTube channel slpc Hardware review Channel and I have made multiple videos talking about why I think PC gaming is better than console gaming so right up front you already know where I'm coming from you already know my mindset and all of that stuff so I just want to be upfront with you in case you're brand new here by the way if you are new here get subscribed cuz I would love to have you now with all that being said this video will be broken down into three different sections the first section will be what is the PlayStation 5 Pro the second section will be the problems with the PlayStation 5 Pro and the final section of the video will be the PlayStation 5 Pro versus a gaming PC in terms of overall pros and cons and things of that nature now we're about to get right into it but if you don't mind I'm trying to pay for a house so here's a word from today's video sponsor this video was FlexiSpot sponsored by flexispot and the uro spacewalk 3s this is a walking treadmill that can be paired with a smartphone application to track workouts it has inclining capabilities that you can use either manually via the remote that comes with the treadmill or you can even activate the auto in inclining mode where your workout will get progressively harder the remote control that comes with the treadmill is magnetic so you can easily store it on the side of the treadmill the spacewalk 3s is fairly light and very easy to move around thanks to the bar located at the back of the treadmill additionally I'm very impressed with how quiet the spacewalk 3s is because when it's turned on I can barely even hear it lastly the spacewalk 3s has a crystal clear LED display so you can see all the information at a glance and it has a maximum speed rated up to 4 mph and lastly is coming with extra cushioning to help with knee impact reduction now go ahead and find out more information and save some money by taking advantage of my discount code Down Below in the video description now thank you flexispot for sponsoring today's video What is the PlayStation 5 Pro okay so what is the PlayStation 5 Pro the PlayStation 5 Pro is a better version of the PlayStation 5 it is a mid generation console refresh this is not a new generation of gaming consoles it is simply a mid generation console refresh this is very similar to what Xbox did with the Xbox One X and what PlayStation did with the PlayStation 4 Pro now we just have the PlayStation 5 Pro now Sony is marketing the PlayStation 5 Pro being better in three different ways it is referred to as the big three you now have ai upscaling you now have advanced rate tracing and you also have a faster G GPU now the main marketing pitch here is that you should no longer have to decide between Fidelity mode or performance mode on your PlayStation 5 games you can now have the best of both worlds thanks to the PS5 Pros new hardware and software technological capabilities so all the way around the PlayStation 5 Pro is simply a better PlayStation 5 a more capable PlayStation 5 and to be honest and I'm taking a shot in the dark here it's just an educated guess but more than likely the PlayStation 5 Pro will be the fastest gaming console we have ever seen of course we need to see it in person we need to test it and all of that stuff and see what the reviewers say we need to compare it to the Xbox series X but I'm thinking more than likely it will be the fastest gaming console on the market once it releases on November the 7th now The Problems with the PlayStation 5 Pro let's talk about the problems with the PlayStation 5 Pro so as I said it comes out on November the 7th but the price is $6.99 or $700 us MSRP so unfortunately if you're located outside the US you will pay more than that now with that being said unfortunately it does not stop there because the PlayStation 5 Pro does not come with the vertical stand yes that is correct the vertical stand that is in the marketing material for the PlayStation 5 Pro is sold separately and if you want that stand it will be another $30 on top of the $700 guys you just let you just put it on the T you don't need a vertical the out of here I've got it sitting on my desk it's been there for years it's fine vertical stands you don't need a vertical just sit it on the ground and that's fine if you want to do that go for it you know I mean it's not the end of the world now something that is a bigger deal is the PlayStation 5 Pro also does not come with a Blu-ray drive so if you want one of those that will cost you another $80 on top of the $700 price tag and on top of that you'll see right here that this does not come with the disc drive so you have to purchase that separately which is an additional $80 cost for those who want to maintain the ability to purchase physical media and use that so for those folks you're really looking at a price of $780 that's almost $800 BR so like you you get you want to play one game on this you're you're dropping a you're dropping $1,000 some people will say I don't care about a Blu-ray Drive I buy all my games digitally physical media is dying and look I hear you there are arguments to be made for that but there are a lot of people out there who really still love physical media and they go and they buy their physical media they want to preserve as much physical media as humanly possible and they really like the idea of knowing hey I have a physical copy of this game that may not be me that may not be you but there are people out there that really care about that stuff some ordinary gamers talks about this all the time he even made a PlayStation 5 video complaining about this so it's definitely a point of consideration I look at things a little bit more simply than that my mindset is this if I'm making a product and putting it out on the market and I'm saying this product is better than the previous product one way that I look at that to say is it really better I always ask myself okay does this product do everything the last Model did and more if the answer is yes it is definitely Superior if the answer is no now we have some tradeoffs going on in the PlayStation 5 Pro does not do everything the PlayStation 5 did the PlayStation 5 came with a Blu-ray Drive the PlayStation 5 came with a vertical stand but the PlayStation 5 Pro does not have those things you have to pay extra if you want those things and if you're The real cost of the PlayStation 5 Pro curious I am in the state of Georgia in the United States of America and I added a $700 product to my Amazon cart along with the PlayStation 5 Optical Blu-ray Drive along with the PlayStation 5 vertical stand just to calculate the tax and see what the final number would be and the final number is this in taxes I was looking at paying $48.75 for a grand total of $860 64 and so at the end of the day if you get a PlayStation 5 Pro and you say hey I still want to be able to play physical games I still want the vertical stand and if you are in the United States depending on your state tax you could be looking around $860 give or take and unfortunately if you're outside the United States it will cost you even more than that and we have to remember that you also have to pay for an online subscription in order to play your games online and so the cheapest option there is PlayStation Plus coming out to about $10 per month for the essential package or you can do $25 for every 3 months or you can do $80 for the year and that is the bottom tier you can go up to extra for more money and you can go up to premium for even more money than that it just depends on the perks you want but yes at the end of the day when it's all said and done you are pushing very close to about $1,000 in order to play games on the PlayStation 5 Pro okay let's say for the Is the PlayStation 5 Pro worth it sake of argument you don't care about physical media you don't care about the vertical stand you are totally fine with a $700 price tag just because reasons you're going to go buy the PlayStation 5 Pro because you think it's going to be worth it the question then becomes is it is it really going to be worth it because if you look at the presentation that Mark cery gave there is not a lot there to go on outside of the price this is single-handedly the biggest complaint that people have about the PlayStation 5 Pro all the games used to showcase the technology are games that are already on the market and in some cases they have been on the market for more than a year you're talking about Ratchet and Clank Rift apart you're talking about Spider-Man 2 you're talking about The Last of Us Part Two these are older games there's no new titles there's no new exclusives there's no new super over-the-top graphically demanding game we've never seen before to really showcase these Technologies so it comes across a little bit lackluster if I'm being completely honest and when I was listening to other videos on YouTube from PlayStation Gamers from people who are really invested in the PlayStation ecosystem even they had to admit yeah I'm not really seeing a lot here that makes me want to go and buy this thing I saw a lot of really awesome benefits and bells and whistles coming to game games that I've beaten already I don't know if I want to play those again but there was nothing here that really said to me you have to buy this on day one because of this game it was just stuff I played already and I don't know if it's you know if it's if I really want to replay all these games all over again and spend $700 to do so so yeah I really think Sony dropped the ball here they didn't really do a good job at demonstrating why you need this AI upscaling why you need this faster GPU why you need this Advanced raid tracing because really all they showed was that there is a marginal Improvement whenever you zoom in on something it's on games that you have probably already played if you were interested in playing them and so that's really the main problem with the PlayStation 5 Pro you got the pricing and then you have the fact that what you are getting wasn't really demonstrated in a way that really said hey this is amazing and you have to have it so I think that's really where they dropped GTA 6 will NOT be 60 FPS on the PlayStation 5 Pro the ball okay I'm editing this video and I'm now starting to see reports come out out that are claiming the PS5 Pro will not guarantee 60fps on video games just because a game receives a patch for the PS5 Pro it does not mean that it will run at 60fps I'm also seeing reports that are claiming that even GTA 6 will more than likely still run at 30 FPS on the PS5 Pro because it will be a game that will be heavily CPU demanding in the PlayStation 5 Pro is not receiving an update to its CPU so unfortunately even at $700 it seems like 60fps is not a guaranteed standard now again this section of the video is called the problems with the PlayStation 5 Pro and if I'm missing something let me know in the comment section below let other people know what I miss so that they can at least have that information but now I PlayStation 5 Pro vs Gaming PC Ray Tracing need to move on and talk about how the PlayStation 5 Pro compares to a gaming PC and I really want to hang out in this section for a little while and get pretty detailed about some of the comparisons the PlayStation 5 Pro is standing out over the PlayStation 5 for three reasons AI upscaling a faster GPU and advanced raay tracing and we don't really know a lot about any of those things but let me go ahead and address the advanced raate tracing so I found an article from cnet.com where Mark cery did an interview and here is a direct quote regarding raid tracing PS5 Pro uses the new Advanced raid tracing feature feature sets that AMD created as the next step in their road map architecture but if you look around there are no other AMD gpus that use it yet we motivated the development and I'm very happy we did so the response from the developers has been extraordinarily great okay so here's what I get out of that quote if I'm understanding it correctly basically what he's saying is that he has worked directly with AMD to get a custom GPU for the PS5 Pro and to get early rate tracing features that are not yet on the market in desktop gpus from AMD radon and that's cool that's fine that that means that yes the PlayStation 5 Pro will have noticeably better rate tracing performance than the regular PlayStation 5 and that's phenomenal but see now we need to talk about how advanced raid tracing compares to the PC platform if you're interested in raay tracing then here's what you need to know raay tracing has been been available on PC for many many years now way ahead of console and yes we had some very rough early implementations of it I'm not going to pretend like it was the most beautiful thing on the planet or anything like that but the technology was there and because it was there it was able to Foster and grow and get better over time and now today you can come over and build a PC and you have access to both AMD and Nvidia and as we approach the fourth quarter then both AMD and Nvidia should be releasing new gpus and I can almost guarantee you that AMD will implement this new raate tracing technology that's going into the PS5 into their brand new gpus in fact I would even wager that the version you're getting in the PS5 is probably a lesser version of that which will be in the dedicated gpus that is an educated guess but I think it's a fair guess and even if not Nvidia is still currently number one in raid tracing and you know they're going to continue to improve their raid tracing capabilities with the RTX 50 Series gpus and I understand that's going to be way more expensive than purchasing a $700 PlayStation 5 Pro but what I'm trying to say is that if you're truly interested in Ray tracing console is not really the place you should be you can come to PC and get access to these Technologies today and you can also have your pick of AMD or Nvidia it's up to you you're not just stuck with whatever is in that box and that is one of the big advantages of being a PC Gamer is is that you pick the hardware you decide if you want AMD or Intel you decide if you want AMD or Nvidia you pick what kind of ram you want and what motherboard you want and all those different things PC Building is incredibly fun and awesome another important thing to take note of is that on the PlayStation 5 Pro games will have to be patched in order to take advantage of the raid tracing capabilities and the upscaling capabilities you will not simply just be able to launch any game you want and have access to those features simply because you have a PS5 Pro you are at the mercy of the developers behind the games that you want to play and waiting on them to implement these Technologies whereas on PC we already have many games that have access to raay tracing and upscaling capabilities we even have PlayStation games on PC that take advantage of these Technologies Spider-Man remastered is an excellent example of that Spider-Man remastered was an exclusive on Playstation it was then ported over to PC and now on PC we have access to dlss and FSR and frame generation and Ray tracing and it has all the features that one could possibly want and so that is just another thing to consider when comparing a PlayStation 5 Pro to the PC platform now let's talk about the AI up PlayStation 5 Pro vs Gaming PC AI Upscaling scaling so Sony's version of this AI upscaling will be called PlayStation spectral super resolution and it will work across the whole game library but it will require games to be updated via a patch which will add in details to upscale to 4 K and apparently it will also work on psvr2 games okay look when it comes to upscaling I can make an entire video about this I'm very passionate about it and honestly I meant to already make a video really breaking everything down but I will try to make this as simple as I possibly can first of all upscaling is not magic all that's happening is that the game is rendering down to a lower resolution like 1080P or 1440p and then it is calling upon that AI assisted upscaler to render the image back up to 4K using AI which then creates a fake 4K image now early on you could really see the issues with this because some of the images were very blurry and it just didn't look that great but today in 2024 these technologies have come a very long way and to the necked eye you really can't tell a difference without overly pixel peeping now to be completely open about this topic Nvidia has showcased different examples where dlss can occasionally make an image look better than the native image meaning once you call upon on dlss the image it creates actually looks better than the original image it started with and that's fantastic when it works but this is not a guarantee in all games now on PC we do have different versions of these Technologies but the overall concept is exactly the same you take the native resolution you drop it down then you call upon AI to render it back up to a higher resolution and what this allows you to do is to have a much higher frame rate your frame rate will absolutely Skyrocket and so this is what people mean when they start talking about Native 4K versus fake 4K is that native 4K is truly a 4K image being rendered by your GPU with no upscaling assistance but fake 4K is whenever you call upon an upscaler to get that image up to 4K and early on it was a much bigger issue than it is today but now it's become so normalized that people just kind of stopped complaining about it but honestly I think upscaling is a phenomenal technology for consoles and I definitely think consoles should have this technology and they should have had this technology for a while now because with a PC you can take it home and use it for a few years and then if you don't get the frame rate you want you can just switch out some components and upgrade it with a console you cannot do that so upscaling is a great way to get new life and better performance out of your Hardware now on PC we have different versions of these upscales Intel has xess AMD has FSR and in Nvidia has dlss now nvidia's solution is proprietary and AMD solution is open source and similar lead array tracing a lot of people refer to Nvidia as the leader here they say that dlss is better than FSR and I can openly admit that that was true especially early on with FSR 1 and FSR 2 but fsrs come a long way and honestly I would wager depending on the game and the implementation of it you might be pressed the really figure out which one is which but overall the technologies have come a very long way and we already have an extensive library of games on PC that are using FSR and dlss and so again it's one of those things where if you're considering a PS5 Pro and you're interested in this upscaling technology we already have that over here on PC and that is not something that's going to cost you an arm and a leg to get access to because again FSR is open source and so you can get any GPU and take advantage of FSR so just food for What GPU is in the PlayStation 5 Pro thought on that okay time for the home stretch let's talk about the GPU so the GPU is the main thing that has changed in the PlayStation 5 Pro the CPU did not change the GPU is the main change here now with that being said what does that mean and how much of an impact is that and how does that translate to gpus on a PC well Mark cery said that the new GPU in the PlayStation 5 Pro is 45% faster okay what what does that mean exactly well if you start googling around one thing you're going to find mind is that the number 60 compute units comes up what they're saying is that the new GPU for the PlayStation 5 Pro is going to have about 60 compute units and then when you start searching around on the internet you can see that the 7800 XT has 60 compute units and I did an entire video about the 7800 XT spoiler alert I highly recommend it it is a great GPU and if you're going to sit there and say oh wow we're getting a 7800 XT basically in our PS5 Pro for $700 that is truly a phenomenal deal that is a phenomenal deal I challenge that notion because I don't think that's true and let me explain why I don't think that's true okay so it is true if you look at the compute units for the 7800 XT the number is 60 but it is also true that if you look at the RX 6800 GPU the number of compute units is also 60 and the reason why this is relevant is for two reasons the first reason is because this shows that there is more than one GPU that has 60 compute units and so I don't think 60 compute units is the only metric you can use to really say oh this is the GPU it is but number two the RX 6800 is in the same family of gpus as the 6700 non XT the RX 6700 non XT why are we talking about that GPU well according to digital Foundry that is the GPU in the PlayStation 5 and to take it one step further if you go to techpowerup.com and if you look at the relative performance you can see if you add 45% to the performance of the 6700 you end up getting a Radeon RX 6800 whereas the Radeon RX 7800 XT is 72% faster so if you want to talk about actual performance if the 6700 non-xt is truly the GPU inside the PlayStation 5 and if the new GPU is truly 45% faster then the Radeon RX 6800 is about the best bet we can possibly get because it is coming in at 44% faster now again this is relative performance and it is coming from a single source techpowerup.com and so it does depend on how much stock you want to put into that information but I find it far more likely that the GPU went from a 6700 non XT to a 6800 non XT because it is just a simple one GPU tier upgrade versus jumping from rdna 2 all the way up to rdna 3 I have a hard time imagining that and again if you go back to the presentation that Mark cery provided we were not seeing a radical difference in terms of performance or graphical Fidelity whenever he was doing the side-by-side comparison that could just come down to the simple fact that you know it's compressed on YouTube and they did a terrible job picking which games to Showcase these Technologies for all I know the PS5 Pro could come out November 7th and it could be absolutely phenomenal and wonderful and all the good things but I really just have a hard time thinking that they jumped up an entire generation of gpus for the PS5 Pro if they did that truly would be a phenomenal value minus all the other things that we pointed out earlier in the video but I think the GPU is probably going to be closer to that Radeon RX 6800 as opposed to a 7800 XT and if you're curious what that difference is the 68 800 XT is about 20% faster than the 6800 non XT and the 7800 XT is about 8% faster than the 6800 XT and so as you can see there's a pretty big gap there you can make the argument that okay maybe tech power up is 1 two maybe 3% maybe even 4% off in some of these numbers but if you look at the margin between the 6700 non-xt versus the 7800x T according to Tech powerups chart there is a 72% difference there and Mark cery himself only said to expect a 45% performance increase so 45 and 72 don't equate regardless of the compute units but I could be wrong I I could be wrong I have no idea we'll have to wait and see on November the 7th consoles What is the point of a console definitely have their place I used to be a console gamer I hated the PC platform and I never thought I would ever be a PC Gamer well years went by and now here I am not only am I a PC Gamer I build PCS for other people and now I run a PC gaming channel here on YouTube so I never thought that would happen but when you get more information and when you start experiencing what PC has to offer it kind of opens your eyes a little bit I think Mark cery is missing the point or Sony in general is missing the point of a console let me explain I know why people play consoles people play consoles for three reasons and the first reason is cost all day long people want a cheap solution to be entertained the second reason why people play consoles are for the console exclusive games and the third reason why is for ease of access ease of use and the cold heart truth is that PC is easier to use than ever before you can buy a pre-built PC if you don't want to build it yourself sure okay it's not going to be quite as simple as a console in terms of maintaining it but at the end of the day it's not rocket science and then in terms of console exclusive games those are going away more and more every day PlayStation now has their own dedicated page on Steam they are bringing over all of their games we have God of War 2018 and in a couple of days we'll be getting God of War Ragnarok we have Spider-Man remastered we have ghost of tsushima we have ratchet and clink ripped apart and the list goes on and on and they will only continue to bring those games over Xbox has already committed to Bringing all of their first party games to PC day one of release and so really the main reason why people would really stick with console other than the simple fact that they just don't want to learn how to use a PC is cost it's the price and when you look at the PlayStation 5 Pro and you see that it starts out at $700 and then it goes up from there after you include the vertical stand if you want it the Blu-ray Drive if you want it and taxes you're really getting kind of close to that PC territory and if you PC build for the price of a PS5 Pro want to think oh well that's not true because PCS cost thousands of dollars I will admit if you want a PC that is top of the line that is going to be several thousand if you want a PC that even fully matches what the PS5 Pro is probably going the offer that is going to be over $11,000 I will admit that however if you're open to experimenting and seeing what kind of build you could put together for about the same price as the PlayStation 5 Pro if you include all the other stuff I mentioned then I came up with this list on PC part picker and you can see the grand total B4 tax is $867 53 and yes I will fully admit this is not a top-of-the-line gaming PC and maybe possibly the PS5 Pro will rival or even potentially beat this PC but it won't be by much not by much at all you have a 3700x processor on here which I'll admit you may or may not be able to get in your area it just depends it is an older CPU but it does match the eight cores in the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro it does come with a CPU Cooler in the box and of course the main thing here is going to be the GPU with the 7700 XT that gets you on the latest and greatest family of AMD Radeon gpus it does have R tracing support and if you go back to techpowerup.com and if you look at that relative performance chart you can see the 7700 XT is listed as 42% faster than the 6700 non XT which is supposed to be the GPU inside the PlayStation 5 and yes I understand that 42% faster is not 45% faster but AMD gpus get faster over time with driver maturity and so depending on when this number was provided this 7700 XT could very well be at that 45% marker today and of course with that PC build I just showed you you will get raate tracing support I'll admit it's not the best but you'll have raate tracing capabilities and you'll have access to upscaling capabilities with FSR and you'll even have access to frame generation which I don't think is currently going to be on the PS5 Pro so there's a lot of reasons Final Thoughts to consider switching the PC and I just wanted to point that out because anytime a new console gets announced you always see people online talking about oh this is finally going to be a PC killer and oh this is going to be faster than a 4090 and you see all these different comments online and I understand some people are trolling I get that but some people I I I think they might actually think this stuff so I just wanted to set the record straight but look my voice is shot I'm tired I'm exhausted it's 2:00 in the morning I got to get some sleep if you enjoyed this video please do me a favor hit that like button because it goes a long way and helping me out if you're new get subscribed drop a comment below let's talk about this stuff thank you so much for hanging out with me and until next time Eck out
