for two weeks now we've been digging back through the history books and it's hard not to considering the dark past of kansas city's playoff games but today we're throwing these out three decades is a long time by any measurement but to measure the change here at highland springs you just need to look back we had some history tonight here the first ever meeting between logan rogersville and hillcrest happened tonight to start district football playoffs on this soggy and grassy field the first natural grass field hillcrest told me the hornets have ever played on and that slippery surface played a role right out of the gate now for the boys team this will be their first final four trip since 1986 but the difference this time around is at the other end of this hallway just mere feet away the girls team is preparing for their first final four trip ever at the exact same time he said he was already on to practice on monday a main after bill belichick's heart and according to that scoreboard back there much like the patriots a pretty dominant win tonight but hold on let's take it back during the race maximum security cuts over the lane bumps into the horses behind him and for the first time in race history the winner is disqualified for that the crown instead goes to underdog country house and crystal that is why i will never be betting on horse racing in my life so an exciting finish for the pga tour champions golfers here at buffalo ridge but they don't get much time to rest because on monday they start up all over again for another three round tournament just up the hill over at ozarks national golf course back in one of these springfield slumps carlson had the entire locker room down some of the cereal and sure enough the team went on to get a win now the magical marshmallows have landed him in a spot for the all-star futures game and his teammates are still after his lucky charms i feel like lucky charms might be my favorite okay no thank you you know i would but i like almond milk you know my mom told me not to talk with my mouth full try mom laura carter has played golf for 66 years now and she's got the documents to prove it 40 years ago and despite all the changes to the game green fees a buck and a half [Laughter] can you imagine she's still carving up the course at 96 years old from the time i started it i loved it and while a hole in one 60 years ago ranks high in her life accomplishments serving in world war ii stands out above the rest i was aviation machinist mate third class in the navy yes how long did you serve about two and a half years i when the war ended i got out carter was lucky enough to return from the war without major physical or mental struggle but not all veterans are as lucky it messes with people every day and there's no getting rid of it how do you how do you cure a memory of shooting somebody killing them and then pull their family's picture out of their pocket how do you cure that veterans like carter suffer a common problem rejoining society after service but each one found a similar place to conquer that right here on the tee box i've never seen an angry face out on the golf course everybody's laughing and having a good time it's all part of pga hope a program that invites veterans onto the course once a week for exercise fun and most importantly socialization with your own and you understand each other so that's the important thing and no issues with that and i love it but important programs like this one don't come free on july 20th river cut golf course is hosting a tournament to raise funds in hopes of reaching even more veterans than the dozens already involved if you google pga hope slash reach you'll see that there's somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 programs across the nation that's a drop in a bucket what it should be and with more funding would come more help and hopefully more laura carter's i'm bowling forget it no golf in springfield matt vareen ozarks now it's two outs with the bases loaded in a tie game in the state championship in the bottom of the seventh here's kaidan mcmane the pitch to mcmain swung on and headed to right field base hit for mcvayne and for the first time in school history the willard tigers are state champions in baseball a moment willard had never seen but here on the brightest day of their lives they couldn't help but reflect on the darkest day i wanted to play in honor of acts because he's he was one of the most important people in my life tonight new at nine the willard community is mourning the sudden loss of a former student athlete and coach justin atchison played for willard's final four teams in 2012 and 2013. he came back to coach baseball and football he died november 10 2018 following a hunting accident attch was 24. the 2019 season was filled with emotion and the memory of atch motivated an historic year ending in a heartbreaking semifinal loss in the final inning in 2019 we thought we were going to get it for him and you know we were this close you know this close but i think that's kind of how life works you just got to keep working a little bit at a time and sometimes things break through the 2020 roster looked poised to provide that breakthrough ranked number one in the state with eight starters returning but kovid provided a roadblock the tigers couldn't break through leaving the large senior class with only summer ball and no shot at the title it's a season we've been looking forward to since middle school you know our senior year i always talked about going to state as the 2020 seniors graduated willard's 2021 roster went largely overlooked but that provided the final bit of motivation win it to prove people wrong win it to claim willard's first title but most important in their minds win it for ash and that is exactly what the tigers did what it should teach all of us as people is that our lives are meant to impact other people and uh and he did that this might be one of his most proud moments if not the most proud moment he's ever had in his life and i know up there he's just smiling bigger than ever probably from u.s baseball park matt vereen ozarks first and now sports with matt john denver once called west virginia the place he belongs well anyone who knows the talent on mizzou's roster knows losing to wyoming is not where the tigers belong country roads were supposed to bring a 1-0 mizzou team back to columbia this week so the least they could do is take them to 1-1 tigers playing host to the mountaineers of almost heaven last week mizzou lost the turnover battle three nothing so barry odom printed up some cards for every player saying turnovers equal victory i think they got the message austin kendall with the pick off the tip tigers in business up three nothing in the first ball goes to mizzou and all aboard the kelly bryant redemption train a 26-yard strike toward alberto kuwait-gunam for seven points and a 10-0 tiger lead 2-15 left in the second the tip pick strikes again this time kale garrett from mizzou getting the hand on the ball renault perkins makes the catch of mizzou looking night and day different from wyoming jumped to six minutes left in the second quarter still 10-0 larry roundtree the carry and the score he had 98 yards today putting mizzou up 17 nothing now in the fourth it's 31-00 and nick bolton for the tigers of the house of bolton and the house of pick sixes as mizzou gob smacks west virginia 38-7 and improves to 1-1 arkansas meanwhile opening its sec slate and oxford facing ole miss early fourth quarter hogs down 17-3 but octavius cooley has the ball stripped out by cameron curl and curl picks it up and rumbles tumbles and kind of bumbles his way into the end zone for the scoop and score 17-10 razorbacks back in the game but just two minutes later ole miss strikes behind elijah moore his second touchdown catch of the day and the rebels top arkansas 31-17 now the evangel crusaders are back in ozark for the 2019 home opener crusaders went 5-1 at home last season and they know the key to making the nia naia playoffs this year is a perfect home slate it all gets started tonight as peru state came to town first crusaders drive zeke kuyawa going to go over the middle to hawken friend 22-yard score in the crusaders taking the lead second quarter tied at seven crusaders threatening kuyawa heading toward the end zone not the same luck this time picked off evangel denied the points defense tight all night long evangel would force a punt here snapped too high loose ball kicked out of the end zone for a safety evangel taking the 9-7 lead bobcats would try for points right before the half with a long field goal but the kicker barely even had a chance to go for it crusaders with a block that's how the half would end evangel powering through to get to 2-0 this season as they win 22-14 meanwhile southwest baptist opened its football season today paying william jewell a visit but it was the cardinals dominate the day as they topped sbu 29 to 9. and in a story with more twists than a taco bell dessert menu antonio brown never ceases to entertain at eight this morning he posted on instagram asking to be released by oakland at 11 the raiders obliged and at four o'clock this afternoon a new team had already signed brown to a one-year deal and if you have to ask who you aren't paying attention that's right friends antonio brown is now a new england patriot brown signed a one-year deal 15 million dollars with a 9 million dollar signing bonus according to espn's adam schefter brown now joins brady's arsenal that already includes julian edelman and josh gordon now over in the world of baseball october approaches and division races are entering that final stretch you'd be hard-pressed to find a closer battle than the nl central cardinals entering the day two and a half up on the cubs facing pittsburgh top third cards open the scoring first up dexter fowler ripping a single to center field adam wainwright scores and it's one nothing st louis later in the frame two on for marcelo zuna he launches one 390 feet to right center a three-run bomb just like that it's four-nothing jump to the seventh 6-1 now paul deyoung puts it on ice a double off the wall two runs score and st louis tops the pirates 10-1. meanwhile the cubs facing the brewers bottom 9th 2-2 christian yelits the walk-off double for a 3-2 milwaukee win st louis now holding a three and a half game lead on chicago in the division meanwhile the royals also in action they were visiting marlins park two teams decidedly not in playoff contention second ending bases loaded danny duffy knicks the elbow at caleb smith run comes home it's 1-0 marlins jumped to the seventh royals scored on an air already in the inning now hunter dozier shoots one to right to score chester cuthbert and take a 2-1 lead they weren't done yet in the frame ryan mcbroom bringing the boom on a rocket to right blowing this one open bases cleared in a six-run frame as the royals top miami seven to two that is a lot of wins for local teams baseball looking good mizzou looking good and of course you know the royals not the only kansas city team in florida this weekend chiefs taking on the jags tomorrow you know there i've been hearing a lot of people talking about the humidity maybe being an advantage for the jaguars you were at training camp this year though yeah yeah i mean saint joseph st joseph was pretty hot and beth's been talking about the weather that it's getting back in the 90s so it's not like the chiefs aren't used to right it's missouri we know how it is and speaking of weather when we come back beth will have one more look at our forecast here
