Jack Draper through to US Open Semi-Finals | Back Pages Tonight

[Music] time now for Back Pages tonight here on Sky Sports News bringing you a first look at the sports stories in the morning's newspapers and joining us tonight Jason Bert the chief football correspondent of the Telegraph and RI Al Samurai the chief Sports feature writer at the Daily Mail welcome to you both the gents let's quickly run through the back pages Guardians back page dominated with a story that makes the headlines Jack Draper reaching the semifinals of the US Open male with a similar picture different angle on it Drapers American Dream also features on the back page there as does the headline Tunes how hint which is based on quotes from an interview with Newcastle sporting director when asked about an fa approach for Eddie how potential one we'll get to that Draper on the back of the inde independent also features Angel Gomez talks about the tough road leaving Manchester United to get in England call up by spells in Portugal and Le sunback page SP splashes with two football stories casemiro is determined to fight for his future at Manchester United and Kyle Walker vows to win his England Place back also a Newcastle story at the top there Daily Mail online carries a golf story that Rory mroy and Scottish Sheffer are set to clash with Brooks keper and Bryson the Shambo as the match pits live golf versus PGA Tour W on the guardian website par Olympics is headlined by Dame Sarah story with a remarkable 18th gold medal let's start with the tennis and Jack Draper breakthrough continues to the US Open he become only the fourth British man to reach semi-finals of the tournament in the open era after a straight sets win over Alex Deon no and the guardian back page Rath Draper eases into the US Open semi-final new star of British tennis emulates Mentor Murray ease was the right word how impressive was the style not just the result rth I think it's the theme of his entire tournament so far he's he's he's he's he's not dropped a set he's barely had his serve broken he's he he's been fantastic he suddenly finds himself in the semifinals of the US Open and we're all wondering quite how British tennis moved on so quickly from Andy Murray it's it it is remarkable it you know look there there are a couple of things to say one one one would be the manner in which he's moved through the tournament he he he's playing fabulously well he's got a brilliant confidence he's 22 years old he's spoken this week actually about the kind of doubts and introspection he's had earlier in his career that's been completely discarded here he's playing with he's playing with freedom he's got this fr fantastic Ser is being described in the sport as a can opener serve I'm not entirely sure what that means but it's a very good serve he's got a brilliant backand and and and he's he's he's going out and attacking this opportunity now what we would say then as the second point is he's had what would be described as a reasonably kind draw so far Alex De manora was the first seed he's faced he was the 10th seed he's been carrying a hip injury certainly didn't look fit at points particularly in the first set tonight but coming up in the next round it's either going to be Yanik sin or or meddev that is going to be a vast step up it's a huge challenge to get through these final two hurdles but you know on the basis of the way that he's playing you wouldn't write anything off he really does look the part right now romantic story isn't it Jason 22y old says he almost quit the sport trying to get through the future circuit Jack the Lad the headline in the telegraph your Paper Dynamite dper comes of a to reach us open finally I as well covering it there is the timing significant Jason do you feel with with Andy Murray's final tournament just for the inspirational factor for for youngsters and the sport in this country yeah I think that's exactly the point I mean the timing is is fantastic obviously with Andy Murray retiring we were just wondering what was going to happen with with men's tennis and whether or not anyone could fill that void and to have Jack Draper make this incredible run in the US Open he's just he's just fantastic and gives everyone a lift in terms of tennis and the future tennis he's talked in the past about you know how he's physically felt like he's made of glass um I know the trailer came on this evening but he he obviously has got over those problems and and as you say his timing has been impeccable RI is Right obviously he's clearly not had the most difficult run to to the semi-final but the fact he's not even dropped a set you know shows that he's getting more and more confident he's obviously building on on that run I mean last year he wasn't even in the the top 100 when it came to the US Open so he's he's clearly you know developing as a player he's clearly sorted out his body and his game and he's obviously got his quite unusual style in many ways left-hander um but I think it's perfect for tennis that we've got you know this this young good-looking lad um coming on the scene and uh and obviously making a big splash it could be a big star can't he R I just wonder we've seen em rakano unable to build on that magical run at the US Open the back page of the male Drapers American Dream Brit surges into the US Open semis I just wonder whether he could build on this Roger fedra was nearly 22 when he first won wimon do you think this could be a breakthrough moment Come What May in the semi-final a big career ahead absolutely there's there's there there's been a lot of noise around Jack trer within tennis for a few years and as Jason's pointed out there the injuries have the the thing that have held that have held him back the guy the guy could barely go a few months about a new or an old ailman cropping up and derailing him again so he's having this he's having this this Fitness and good condition at the moment it's really paying off in terms of where he goes next even on the basis of let let's say it ends at the semi-finals he's going to go into into the world's top 20 it's there are parallels to Emma adanu in the sense that it has been a kind draw as as as as we've said already there the similarities really and this isn't this isn't a a comet that has come out of the clear blue sky this is this this this this this is a player who has been anticipated for a long time very much build as the next wave after Andy Murray he's he's he's only 22 but it's it's been for a good few seasons now but the talk has been that he's got the all round game he's he's he's he's got this fantastic back hand he's got his he he he he's a lefty which always carries this element of surprise he this beautiful whipped surf that's just it's been causing a lot of problems if it is for de he plays next the guy stands pretty much at the back wall that could actually favor Jack Draper as well then in the semi in in semi-finals kicking that ball out wide he he he's got a huge opportunity in his hands right now absolutely we hopeing it gets the luck of the draw then in the semi-finals we shall see let's talk of football US Open semi-finals to come it's England against island or Island against England on Saturday Jason let's talk about a story you know very well because you wrote it Lee Carley is not the sexiest man but New England manager is ahead of his time methodical coach and unbelievable Communicator has taken long route to the top but those who know him best say his modesty hides in eyon will it's a great piece this lots of people have contributed what stood out for you Jason yeah it's it's we wanted to really just find out a bit more about Le Car obviously I remember him very very well as a player um and I've been fascinated by the fact that he's had opportunities in the past to be a manager and has shied away from that and obviously decided to become a coach stay within the fa system and I just wanted to talk to a few of his former teammates and people have known him well to ask them really what why why is he taking this path and what was clear was that he was he was always cut out to be a really good coach but had a little reluctance about whether or not he wanted to push himself forward and be a manager and I think it's fascinating that he's he's taken all this time and when we saw him last week I did ask him directly I said you know you're 50 now it's either now or never if you want to be a manager you got this great chance with England even then he seemed a little bit reluctant but talking to those who know him well former teammates such as Jason mcer and and Craig short he was Craig Short's boot boy he cleaned his boots when they were together at Derby and Gary R and also David Moyes he's a fascinating character himself when it talks talks to about coaches and coaching development I get the impression that they they they do think he he wants this job that this is the opportunity he sees that now and he really had to chance to um to seize the job and become the England manager what what one thing I would mention about him which I really really like and that he's a little bit old school and that he actually picks up the phone and talks to people I think we're in an era nowadays where it's all about whatsapps and voice notes and they all said he's somebody who who talks to them you'll call people up and actually have a a chat on the phone and I find that quite refreshing um because nowadays it's actually quite hard to get people on the phone sometimes but he certainly stays in contact with his former teammates and people he's he's grown up with and so on and so forth and they also SP incredibly highly of him as a coach what going to be fascinating now is whether he can cope with the glare and the expectation and the pressure of being the England manager absolutely will he be offer the job longterm as well Rath on the note of the long-term future the mail your paper carries this story Tunes how hint Newcastle won't block Eddie exit if england come calling it's from Craig Hope who is the Northeast reporter there a quote here from Mitchell Rath we want Eddie how as our head coach for as long as we can but we also recognize we are on a journey and we also recognize his quantity and his potential as well what do you think that means I think it's interesting the whole the whole timing of these comments and the discussion around how it's obviously very turbulent up there at the moment he's not he's not best pleased of how the transfer Windows gone I also don't think um I I think he would be very keen on that job should it come up if we if we Trace back some of his public disgruntlement you might even say it was it was immediately after after Gareth Southgate left so I you know I i' I've certainly detected certain certain Vibes of um Coming get me I think he would be I think he would be very keen there are questions at the moment is the relationship between Eddie how and Newcastle about to run its course I do I I I do find the timing of vell's comments quite interesting yeah maybe there could be a financial resolution if he was offered the position is perhaps maybe a suggestion we we shall see let's talk England's Jason and the players Angel Gomez in the i Sport here three lines call up made it all worth it England debutant Gomez has no regrets about leaving his Boyhood Club Cole made it difficult Journey worthwhile says Gomez here what did you make of Angel Gomez is he is a thoughtful selection isn't it yeah I think it's a real key selection it's the key selection in fact within this squad because already Lee Carley and some of the players who talk today talked about possibly a slight change in style with England being a little bit more dominant uh a little bit more creative and attacking and it's clear that angel Gomez is seen as almost like a talismanic figure by Lee Carley he's been on the long list for England for for a long time Gareth southet looked at him thought about him didn't call him up but he's come straight into the squad under Lee carsley obviously a key player the key player as I say when England won the European championships under the 21s and I would not be surprised if he starts uh for England against Ireland on Saturday I think he's that important to leei and the way the way he wants England to play and I think it's a really exciting selection a really interesting selection because he is that possibly that deep Ling playmaker that England have talked about having and not having for many many years G southi talked about we don't create players like Andre Andre p and and uh Modric and players such as that and maybe somebody like Angel gmes without putting too much pressure on him he's played as a number 10 much more advanced more creative midfielder but he can play as a deep Ling um playmaker as well maybe he is the one that being pushed forward now and saying well look we've got this opportunity to maybe alter the style of play and he could be the one who does it and I think his his journey he talked about that today has been very fascinating the fact he felt yet to leave Manchester United personally I think that's a real shame I think possibly he suffered because he's not the biggest you know and obviously the Prem league and the league own in France is very very very physical and he's he's managed to prosper there but the Premier League sometimes does have a downer really in terms of the smaller players especially some managers like Jose Mourinho so I think it's a real shame he felt he had to leave Manchester United I'm sure looking at the progress he's made and thinking that's one that got away from them but I think he is actually the most fascinating selection in this squad intriguing to see how he gets on RI got a few seconds before a break but do you think it will embolden other English players to go abroad in search of that football knowing that they won't go unnoticed I think I think we've seen this as a a trend for years you you go you go back a couple of decades and sort Steve McMan was almost a bit of an exception out out at Real Madrid these days it's it's almost the norm it might be a symptom of limited game time over here but it might also be representative that people are a little bit more open-minded about where they want to go where they want to go and play their football as well as where they're going to get their opportunities and you know it's it's it's it's serving a fantastic purpose we've seen it we've seen it with jayen Sancho not withstanding recent turbulence in this in in his career Bellingham Gallagher's just gone out there Kane's setting Bundesliga light so it's I I it it's an established Trend now I I really I really like seeing it the fact that Gomez has been there for four years and he's he's he's he's now sort of stepped out of his own shadow as it were perhaps he needed that freedom stepping away from United being the youngest player since Duncan Edwards all of the hype the Wonder kid that went with it I think he's really blossomed over there so you know good good good on him but it you know in terms of English players going abroad we're seeing a lot of it now certainly are R Jason thank you very much for now we'll take a quick break when we come back we look at more of the back pages including this in the Daily Mail a sign that golf Civil War is all but over or just an opportunity too lucrative to turn down more on that next [Music] you are watching Back Pages tonight welcome back to you and welcome back to Jason Bert the chief football correspondent of the Telegraph and Rath Al Samurai the chief Sports feature writer at the Daily Mail Rath I'll come to you we've had a Jason's piece let's talk golf with what you've written in the mail here Rory maroy and Scotty Sheffer set to clash with Brooks keer and Bri the Shambo in TV battle as the match pits live golf versus PGA Tour what's happening Rath and what does it mean about this festering Civil War that you call that's occurring in golf yeah I quite I quite like this it's it you know look it's a little bit gimmicky it's um if if we go back I I must declare I always really enjoyed sort of Shell's Wonderful World of Golf when they used to sort of bring guys together for these exhibition matches this is this is the same as that it's going to be maroy and Sheffer versus kepo and Bryson D Shambo it's going to be in Vegas in December now look taken as a golf match in is in isolation it it there there's no there's no tremendous significance other than four of the best players in the world having having a head-to-head but it the interesting aspect here I suppose is that political backdrop it's it's ke it's Kar and dambo from Liv it's maroy and Chef from PGA Tour Rory a particularly vocal proponent of PGA Tour now the backdrop we know is these tedious torturous merging negotiations that have run on for 15 months now there's no end in sight there's not been there's not been a particularly meaty update on that subject since the framework announcement was brought out in June 2023 so this does feel like a bit of a bridging point maroy himself has spoken about Goodwill and bringing the best players together I'm sure there will be Financial incentives that make that all the sweeter for them because that does of course seem to be the prime driver of anything in golf at the moment but this has been a long moted kind of possibility it be well if they are going to if if these factions are going to be squabbling couldn't they at least make it interesting create some Ridder cup style match between Live players and PGA players and this this this this is this is the sort of first draft of that I suppose personally I'm I'm quite I'm quite interested in seeing it I think it'd be quite good fun Jason I wonder what golf fans will make of it there's been this sort of Feud hasn't there do you think perhaps they'll see as a bit cynical as a a one-off cash Laden event um yeah you might well be right in saying that but I tend to be slightly more um I don't know optimistic about it I kind of tend to agree with the r i I got to admit I'm not the Great greatest golf fan in the world but I do like the match play sort of format the Ridder cups for me the the most exciting sort of golf uh golf event there is so I do like that when they sort of paid off against each other I I guess there'll be those people watching it thinking how combustible will it be given the history between the players and so on and so forth so I think there might be a sort of slight element of um you know could it be a little bit more um aggressive than it needs to be but um I mean hopefully it's a sign that they're going to finally finally sort of sort things out things are moving in the right direction because it's taken quite a long time for them to to get these sort of merger merger talks resolved and and what's the future of golf's going to hold for for everyone indeed let's hope for a unified future for golf uh talking about moving on let's talk about Chelsea Jason stay with you Premier League clears Chelsea's 76 million pound sale of two hotels to avoid PSR breach this from the Sky Sports website is of course across the papers as well what's happened and what does it mean for Chelsea and indeed other clubs who may have quote unquote Associated businesses yeah I mean it talks about clearing Chelsea well slightly disingenous in in a sense and that they've they've clearly exploited a loophole in in the way that um obviously leester City have done and been reported on the last couple of days the the investigation by the Premier League was really to look at fair market value whether or not this is the right sort of price to to sell those hotels and and clearly you know two hotels in in a prime location in London something6 million pound seems about right but the issue really is who they've sold it to and they've sold it effective to themselves and this isn't allowed under UEFA rules it's not allowed under efl rules but at the present time it's allowed under premier league rules um they had a chance to to vote against this I think it was last year or earlier this year and decided not to but I think it may be one of those areas that will be tightened up as will the the Premier League rule book in terms of what's happened with Leicester city so they've taken advantage of the situation they've done nothing think wrong or illegal um they've actually been quite creative and and quite smart um but I think the Premier League's actual investigation was really to look at the value of the sales and whether or not it was an inflated price for these two hotels and and clearly they decided it's not it's getting hugely complicated for the premier league isn't it Rath not only accountants you probably need real estate people now to Value property and and work out the my new shy of the laws I'm I'm I'm not sure I'll be tapping into a popular scene here when I say let's have some sympathy for journalists but um the Frantic re-education around complex accountancy in the in in recent years has been a bundle of fun for all of us as well so I'm sure the viewers will be playing tiny violins for all of us but it is it it it it is now it's football being contested in courtrooms it's football being determined on you know on on end of year filing I think it's I think it it's it's at one it's both incredibly important because these are the rules and our teams playing by the rules and at the same time it's also entirely tedious and I would I would put it second only to conversations around V for my least favorite topics in sport right now gath we've got about 20 seconds I just need from you because you have been across this Dam a story winning the 18th gold medal for GB women are first in 92 one of Great Britain's alltime sporting Legends utterly remarkable athlete if you if you if if you consider that some of those medals were won as far back as the 1992 Olympic par Olympics in in Barcelona in a swimming pool and in 2024 she's winning gold medals on a bicycle it's it it is a remarkable story hope for us all inspir inspirational re ask Jason thanks very much for now thank you for watching if you missed any of the show
