football on this Thursday I am pumped up we got some games tonight that I'm interested in watching there's High School football uh I am MIT Sherman from the athletic if you are just catching our show because it's week one of college football season and you haven't been paying attention for the last four and a half months then welcome in Connor haer of 1620 the zone is with me we uh today are GNA have a special show we are going to make our predictions for week one in college football we've got four games outside of the Big 10 four games in the Big 10 we are going to give you our picks against the spread we are going to predict the Nebraska game uh and we are going to predict the Nebraska season lots of interesting little um points about the Nebraska season some over unders and various predictions we will get to that very soon so um in fact that's going to start us off Connor are you ready for this are we um are we studied up how do you feel I'll say this um I in going through this you have to really think about um because there's you know a hundred different parts of this thing so you you not only have to pick a record which is what most people do but you also have to basically come up with an image of how you think it's going to look um and then base it off of that so um there's it it takes some thought and and I think you'll I don't know I think you'll learn a lot about where we're at with this team as we as we do these predictions as well I'm I'm very excited so not only for for Saturday against UTEP but season long stuff and then we'll throw in some um we'll run some college football games which start tonight as well yes the season long stuff for Nebraska finishing with Nebraska's record in 2024 will be the final segment of the show so make sure you stick with us but we're going to get started um Nebraska plays UTEP this Saturday in case you have not heard I have this little notebook here and I'm gonna keep this all season Connor's into spreadsheets F notebook yes I'm keeping this because it can just be with me wherever I am as could the spreadsheets I understand but I have a pen and a notebook and I have our our picks written down for here week one and for the season and I'm going to keep this all year and take a little highlighter and I'm going to mark down who picks what correctly and we will have a running total to go over each time we do predictions going into week two three four and moving forward I think we're going to do this on Thursday every week unless there's just no Thursday game that's worth our time and then maybe it'll be Friday um all right so here's where we're going to start Saturday at Memorial Stadium why not go right off the top with Dylan Rola the true freshman quarterback over under on Dylan's passing yardage for Saturday is set at 240 where are you I am I'm am under I do think it's a good number um and by the way these uh these odds are coming from the Mitch Sherman sports book um they're they're placed very carefully by by Mitch and and by the way I think a lot of the numbers are were were really really tough numbers which is what they're supposed to be I'm going to go under for game one 240 um passing yards I don't think they're gonna you know as as much as they say hey we're going to let them play the plays um you know they're I don't I don't think they're going to come out and really really rip it quite yet wouldn't be surpris like terribly surprised if he went over that number but obviously uh one side of the other we're going to go under 240 passing yards that in my head was somewhere in like the 220 range okay I'm with you I got him under on Saturday also I feel like maybe you should introduce the next one so I give the pick first and we'll just kind of rotate that way it doesn't appear that I'm reacting to your your decisions mine are all written down mine are in in the book already me too me too me too yeah uh Dylan Rola we're sticking with Dylan rayola we're going with uh touchdown passes for this week uh the number is at one and a half he threw two in the spring game he threw an interception in the spring game by the way as well uh one and a half touchdowns thrown this week for Dylan rle against UTEP I'm over I got him going over one and a half um I think he's gonna he's going to uh gonna throw a touchdown pass early in this game and uh get at least one more uh later on I think it's going to be a good debut for Dylan I know I have we have him under we both have him under on the on the passing yardage but um I think he'll he'll have a good good debut there will be positive reviews and I got him going over on one and a half touchdown throws I also have him over and the number I had in my head was two um and and if he is to throw two touchdown passes on Saturday it would be already 20% of the way to what Nebraska quarterbacks did touchdown pass wise last year so there's a stat well you got to do that all right next next up we're going to burn through these things because we got a lot lot of things to pick in this show so when analysis is necessary We'll add it turnover margin on Saturday we've got the number set for Nebraska at plus 0.5 so plus a half turnover will Nebraska finish on the positive side not it this can't can't be uh can't be even they've got to be plus one in order to pick the over um yeah you this is one I had a kind of tough time with um I ultimately settled on over and I'm thinking you know the difference of of one or or something like that I don't think it's just going to be this big barrage so let's go over a half um over plus a half I guess I should say um but don't don't feel greatly confident about that one okay so far we are in agreement on everything so I was wondering how much we're g to do that I would assume probably a lot yeah so that's that's a little concerning to me although when we get to some of the names maybe not we have some names to pick um for leading leading statistical uh prod leading statistical producers so um but three more on the over under portion of this week one for Nebraska um next up go go for it Hinrich harberg has been a topic of conversation all right so we're setting the number at three and a half snaps played for Hinrich harberg over under Mitch three and a half snaps played yeah we kind of discuss this Wednesday on the show um so you know you may know where I'm going I think he's a decoy this week I think he'll get in the game I don't think there's going to be any anything big designed for him I'm going to under on three and a half plays for Hiner carberg this is one of the easier ones for me I agree Z under I'm going with zero you know I don't know if I get extra points for saying that it's gonna be zero but extra credit uh zero staps for Henrik harberg this week I'm gonna I I will I will say and this is not an official prediction here um I will say that he does get in the game I I will say that he's going to play one or two but still under the three and a half all right Nebraska sacks in this game the number set at two and a half sacks for the Nebraska defense to accumulate yeah they were able to grab a whole you know a good a good amount of them early in the season against some teams that are you know going to pass it a little bit more what utep's going to do is is is a bit of a mystery um but you know they're going to go fast um I I do think Nebraska's over two and a half sacks in this game I am I am with you um I am with you on on Nebraska being over two and a half sacks so so far the drama that we intended to create here has not occurred but okay this this is where it gets fun this is where it gets a little bit more fun now if we get the same things on these then that's just funny to be honest with you but we got one more on the over under and this is UTP net rushing yard so this is their rushing yards minus uh minus their their yards lost in sacks the numberb set at 73 and a half give me the over give me give me the over on you that's that's that's quite the aggressive number for for week one all right um yeah give me the over utep's going over that number okay here's where we disagree I said under on this one I think uh the Nebraska defense is going to have a good day um utet May throw for a few yards with that that system that Scotty Walden's bringing in from Austin P but um they're not going to run for uh they're not they're not getting close to 100 yards they're not getting close to 73 yards I'm going under on 73.5 yards all right markk this down as I'll let you introduce our next uh our next uh decision who Mitch will be Nebraska's leading Ball Carrier meaning who will have the most Rush attempts this is just on Saturday against UTP which person doesn't have to be a running back doesn't have to be you know whatever uh will lead the team in ball carrier attempts I have EMT Johnson EMT Johnson is my guy um I don't believe gets the first attempt in the game but I have him I have him as the leading Ball Carrier I have Gabe Irvin all right that's just I mean we we we have had trouble you know trying to figure out which one's Gonna Stand Out um I'm just gonna go ahead and crapshoot this one I'm going with Gabe bvin so that's my gu all right leading receiver in terms of yardage so not receptions not touchdowns leading receiver in terms of yardage Jaylen Lloyd uh catches a nice long touchdown in the first week and we have to see that stat about how he's Marvin Harrison Jr again see now this is getting good because we're really at odds here we're we're we're going we're squaring up and and we've got different picks so this is going to be fun Isaiah ner is my guy for for uh for receiving yardage that's um that's my choice so um nothing more needs to be said there he's going to have a big game uh leading tackler on the day Isaac gford uh Nebraska and tackles last year I think with this offensive system that UTEP runs it's going to be a lot of opportunities for uh for Nebraska's uh safeties to get involved on on short gains maybe even some intermediate gains uh Isaac is a guy who has an ability to get into the back field and and play strong in run support so I got him as Nebraska's leading tackler around the uh maybe double digits even uh I am also going with a safety but it is deshun Singleton yeah I I I I like his ability to you know he gets back in there and he has a big game right away give me desan Singleton all right and we will get to our score prediction on this game for Saturday later in the show we're going to make a pick with our actual scores the rest of the games that we go through here in the second segment coming up we're just going to pick against the spread we won't give scores for those um that is coming up real beginning of college football is here this week and it begins tonight uh there's actually a couple games of of uh Intrigue tonight now I know that Minnesota is not on Nebraska's schedule this year but like to keep up with the Gophers a little bit um so they'll play tonight against North Carolina we'll pick that game and then of course Nebraska's week two opponent will go tonight against North Dakota state that would be the Buffalo let's start there Mitch um these odds by the way coming from our friends at the FanDuel Sportsbook so we'll pick against the spread on these ones uh North Dakota State at Colorado who is a 10o favorite that game will be tonight at 7 o'clock on uh on the mother ship on ESPN Mitch who do we got yeah I get the Bison um certainly not to win um at least that's not what I have to say here but I'm taking them with the points I uh I I also have the bu um you know classic um and and that will be for the record that will be a theme this week I it's I think we're gonna see some underdogs this week I I I think we might see chaos right away in the in the first week of the new hell we already saw Florida State lose in week zero so um as we as we continue on uh let's go with let's go with the big game this week and I'll just I'll pick this one first you got Clemson and Georgia um Georgia's 13 and Half Point favorite this is uh this is going to be Saturday morning um this is the biggest game of of week one or week zero however you want to put that I I'm taking Clemson to cover the two touchdowns here to cover the 13 and a half um you know just early in the season you're trying to get stuff worked out Clemson um there's there's some pretty good Buzz about them this year so give me the Tigers to to cover the number not super thrilled about their ability to actually win the game though okay um I like the experience that Georgia has at quarterback with Carson Beck I think they're going to come out and um look strong from the beginning this is the number one team in the country not sure about the direction of clemon Clemson that the way the tigers are trending um so give me uh give me Georgia uh minus 13 and a half points that one uh is an ABC game um as you said Saturday at uh at 11:00 a. Central Time next on our list this is a an ESPN Plus game um and this is one that I I would like to watch um there's quite a bit of state of Nebraska flavor in this game uh with South Dakota State the two-time reigning FCS national champion at number 17 Oklahoma State Cowboys are favored by nine and a half um I am going with the home team Conor I'm taking Oklahoma State I think South Dakota state will put up a good fight for a while and Oklahoma State's going to win this one by double digits give me the Jacks I actually think that they can win this game um this is this is this is probably the team that you know the ranked team that um should be very concerned about about this game it's not bad scheduling no matter what horrible scheduling um you know give me that they're I know South Dakota state is replacing a lot um but I I do like them to cover the the 10 points they'll slow it down and and do their thing out there so give me give me the Jacks yeah I like that we're disagreeing on this stuff so yes final game on the national level that we're going to pick is Saturday night 6:30 on ABC number seven Notre Dame at number 20 Texas A&M Trev Albert's big debut at Kyle Field as athletic director Aggies despite being lower ranked are favored by three in this game I like the Irish to come in and win as an underdog so obviously I'm taking the points I do too um so give me the points on that one did you see the dust up with uh featuring Dear Mr Trev yesterday um they they unveiled a new logo at Midfield um and Texas A&M fans are not thrilled about it so I'll check that out what what can you give me just like a little hint it's um so it's the Texas S&M logo that you're used to seeing but it has the state of Texas behind it apparently this is a Mike Elco thing he really likes it but bottom line is they have changed something as it pertains to a college football team and people do not like it uhhuh if you bring in a coach from duke and an athletic director from Nebraska to be in charge at Texas A&M with all of their tradition and then you get rid of a lot of the people within the department who may know a thing or two about that tradition it can lead to moments like this so I thought maybe this was going to have to do with our idea to name the um final black shirt the 12th man uh that they had caught window to that in College Station I like that idea I think it should I think it should exist in in Nebraska lore now just there's 11 black shirts and then the top backup he get he gets to be the 12th man incredible idea uh let's let's get to a few Big 10 games so we got four of them here we'll go through in pretty uh pretty rapid fire um so I mentioned it North Carolina is a two-point favorite on the road at Minnesota Minnesota is a team with a lot of mystery I mean nobody is really sure what they're going to be and I think it's a pretty big year for Fleck they they have um mean a new quarterback and and Max brasmer the transfer from New Hampshire um so I will I'll pick this one first I'm not I'm not convinced on the Gophers quite yet there's a chance that they could be pretty you know okay this year but give me North Carolina um covering the two on the on the road I agree with everything you just said there um and I'm taking the heels so simple as that uh Minnesota is is going to lose its season opener unlike a year ago on a Thursday night in late August uh 7 PM kick on Fox tonight I will have the Gophers and heels on one television and maybe even the same TV I've I've got room I can put two games on one TV Colorado North theota State on the other these games kick off about the same time uh Penn State is going to Morgan Town West Virginia to open the season on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. this is the big noon game on Fox the Nittany Lions with Drew Aller James Franklin um many of their big their big pieces back are eighto favorites on the road against West Virginia from the Big 12 what do you like I like West Virginia to cover the eight I love that these two teams are playing first of all um that these fan Bas is not exactly fans of each other close proximity things things of that nature um so love love that this is happening um but I I I do think West Virginia um You Know cover covers the eight points Penn State is a program that can get a little conservative um on the offensive side of the ball so we'll see if they have to let it loose at any time um I think it might get scary actually for Penn State give me West Virginia all right let's rip rip through these last two and get to our second break so we can talk about Nebraska's season Fresno State at Michigan defending who do you got in Penn State West Virginia I'm sorry I also have West Virginia I'm I'm uh I'm I'm sticking with you on that one West Virginia to uh to cover the spread um okay Fresno State at Michigan Wolverines defending national champs first year Coach sherone Moore 20 and a half Point favorite at home Saturday night 6:30 kickoff on NBC Fresno to cover the 20 and a half same with me we are in agreement so far picking against all three of the big 10 teams and are against the spread selections final one USC LSU this game is in Las Vegas on Sunday would be a cool thing to be at 6:30 on ABC the Tigers from LSU are a four-point favorite oh Tigers I will uh I will go against the Big 10 team yet again and take the Tigers minus four me too okay um in future weeks we're going to have to find some big 10 games that we think big 10 teams can cover but we in agreement that all four of these big 10 teams will not cover the spread hm I wonder what kind of a trend that will be um as we as we move forward all right coming up after the break we've got picks on the Nole Nebraska football season yardage totals all kinds of stuff and talking about all off season long we will begin with the quarterback Dylan riola the number passing yards for him this year is set at 2600 2,600 passing yards which by the way if he were to hit that Mark would be a top 10 single season Mark in Nebraska school history right away in his freshman Year Mitch do you have the over or the Enda so this number was set because Adrien Martinez who holds this record um added to the New York Jets practice squad on Wednesday by the way uh he threw for 267 yards in or just just right around that it might have been 2619 it's blanking right now but just over 2600 yards in his true freshman season of 2018 um I've got Dylan going under under 2600 how about you I have Dylan Rola going over 2600 passing yards because um I think Adrien is a really good example to use I just think you take adrianne's rushing yards out and you add a little bit back in the in the pass game and um yeah it it's it's not hard to see Dylan getting up close to 3,000 passing yards this year all right could see it could see it got to stay healthy I like um this next one um or to this next one ri's completion percentage season long completion percentage we've got it set at 59.5 on the over under yeah this one was really difficult because I think you know when when you do this um you know this offense it it's not necessarily a super high completion percentage type of offense and and Rule said um the day like Hey we're not going to you know make it easy for him I'm you know paraphrasing a little bit but they're going to throw him right into the fire um so without much confidence I am GNA say over here just because I think he could be a 60% completion percentage guy like that's a good number in my head but I I do love the number um and it was a it was a very difficult one for me yep I'm also at over I think he's going to be in the low 60s um next one Nebraska's points per game last year this was at 18 points per game we're giving them an opportunity to have a big bump here because we've set the number at 26 a half that would have ranked 70th last year nationally yeah um and that would be a eighto jump from a year ago H I'm gonna I'm gonna say under I'm gonna say under and I'm not gonna tell you that this is going to be a bad offense but I am still going to say under 26 and a half points per game I like it I went over I'm saying over 26 and a half points they're going to score at least 27 points a game so lots of confidence for me here in uh in the Young quarterback okay how about the defense 19 this yeah go go for it 19 and a half 19 and a half is the number which is a point above last year this is something that we've had a lot of discussion about over the last couple days now we're putting now we're putting numbers to it uh over under 19 and a half points per game Mitch I'm saying over uh Nebraska didn't face many good offenses if any good offenses at all last year I think this defense will be better than it was a year ago but I do think it will give up 20 points a game under um I I I'm with Nebraska's defense um this year and I don't know this is good this is a good side to be opposite sides on on both of so I am under 19 and a half points per game I think they'll maybe allow less than they did last year okay uh next one on the list is Nebraska wins in its first seven games so we know about this seven game start for the season when Nebraska goes to Ohio State how many wins will it have we've got this number set at five and a half great so do you think do you think Nebraska will be over or under five and a half at the end of October before the Huskers trk to Columbus is a very good prop set at a very interesting price I do have the over I I think Nebraska will be greater than five- two going into Ohio State I really struggled with this one um and I I also settled on over so I'm saying Nebraska's going to be six and one going to uh into the land of the Buckeyes give us the next one uh let's go with uh wins against ranked opponents this season wins against ranked opponents uh we have set the number at a half so if it's if it's you know zero um you get it if if it's you know over once that's what you're dealing with been a while I am going under I I don't know how much opportunity there's going to be for it um this year so I'm gonna go under a half of A ranked win this year zero I I say I'm saying over but I think you bring up a great point because when Nebraska does play A ranked you know it's Ohio State's ranked but they're going to be top five at that at that time um who else is is guaranteed to be ranked Iowa it's a road game I don't know that USC Wisconsin U will be ranked when Nebraska plays them but I've got Nebraska over the 0.5 so I'm saying Nebraska will beat one ranked opponent at least one ranked opponent final final one on the over under list here before we get to a few season other season predictions turnover margin for the season the entire season turnover margin we've heard Matt rues say that he wants Nebraska to be at plus seven we're setting the over under at plus one and a half Huskers were minus 17 last year um and because of that give me the under MH over under plus one and a half and I can this could get very confusing so um I could still they could still be on the positive side of zero and I could still win this bet even if I take the under plus one if yeah if there's zero or one you win and so do I because I'm also under the one and a half I think Nebraska is going to improve its turnover margin um not necessarily by uh by 20 turnovers as far as the uh the change from last season so um all right that's where we're at a few more to pick here leading rusher in terms of yardage for the entire season I will start with this one I have ramir Johnson he is my pick I am hitching by into Gabe bvin I I you know let's let's have him put it together and stay healthy for an entire year give me gab bvin okay I like the consistency Connor leading receiver touchdown catches I will take Jamal Banks um and to be fair this was this one was difficult too um you have to game it out a few different ways but I'm gonna go with banks who I think is probably the favorite yeah me too um most consistent guy I think he's not he's the least likely to avoid ups and downs uh so I'm going with banks Nebraska's record in one score games uh it's been very poor in recent years um where are you going here uh I'm so you have to say how many and then what their record is going to be so sure I believe I believe the number um over the last so many however many years since 2018 is six in 20 7 in one score game so that's bad um I'm going to say they are two and three in onore games this year two and three should I tell you which I think are going to be ons score games and which I think they'll win you can sure do that yeah okay um I think they will have one score wins on the road at Purdue in Indiana and I think they will have one-core losses to ruter USC and Iowa ouch to end the season a one-score loss at Iowa and at USC man that really hurts just to hear that hurts for Nebraska I'm saying Nebraska's record in one score games is three and two so I also have them playing Five ones score games out of 12 this season uh but winning three of them and I did not map it out in the same way that you did maybe I'll think about that as the uh as the after the season starts um I'm not picking UTEP to be a one- score game as you'll hear in just a minute so I've got a few days if I want to uh if I want to Hash that one out further but three and two is my choice for one score games and then the final thing um of course what we've been waiting for before we get to our score pick for Saturday is Nebraska's record this season I tell you what um this is where I um you know I'm glad I did the ones score games thing last night because I thought about it quite a bit and I had been sitting on seven and five for quite some time um and then I just I really thought about each of the opponents and and some more research on him last night and I and I ended up going up one um and and and the team that made the difference was was Kin I'm not a huge believer in Wisconsin this year so I think Nebraska's gonna be eight and four um this season they're GNA take a three- win jump they're going to go to a nice warm bowl game in a regular bowl game location and uh they have a chance to get nine wins this year chance to get nine wins with the Bowl victory regular season record for Connor is 8 and 4 I am with you I also have Nebraska at 8 and4 I've been on the record saying that I told your cohorts Josh and John on Monday when they pressured me into making a pick they always do this I've told them in in past years I wasn't going to do it because I was unsure about how the team would look until after I saw the first game I don't have that excuse to fall back on this year because Nebraska's not on the road at Illinois or playing in Ireland to open the season I I have a good sense what's going to happen on Saturday um so I can make a a prediction for this season uh eight- four is the direction I'm going five- four in the Big 10 so there we are and finally to finish this thing off what happens on Saturday at Memorial Stadium give us a score counter all right I'm a weird score picker you guys are going to learn this about me throughout this season I think it's Nebraska 33 UTP 13 they do not cover but they do win comfortably yeah um we are uh this this was this was a um an unforeseen uh negative of the uh the PX podcast we
