morgant West Virginia home to The Mountaineers in a fan base that has been shall we say preparing it's early in the morning for the battle we have in store and the Mountaineers will put total Lea and we'll get started bringing it back he's not going to make it to the 20 as he's out of Bounds at the 17 the Beavers offense will get the first possession of the game and here he is guys anytime he takes the field he is in complete control of this offense and David he gives defensive coordinators nightmares because of his ability they're going to have a hard time slowing him down no he just doesn't have those weaknesses those flaws the whole Playbook available and he is a dude the deeper into the season we get the more they win the greater their confidence that they can finish strong here in the Big 12 heck yeah Reese the bigger the expectations get the bigger the consequences get for every single game so you know this league is tough you know there's always a lot of points scored you know there's playoff implications possibly down the road so this team's got to continue to stay on course and continue to do what they've been doing no doubt about it all their goals still out ahead of them right now and play I think they've been really good at doing outside of just being a talented football team and showing up is that they've got their head where it needs to be every single week doesn't matter who they're playing they're playing extremely high level just taking it one game at a time you got to do it again today stopped after a pick up of four good R to get it out to the 34 this is so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down after the productive first down play it's second and six the give to the running back from the shotgun he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three listen I know lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive that he's out there oh what a grab by the defense he was looking for that return to the but he'll set him well statistically this defense is not one of the better units against the pass they're trying to change that here today what a great job tracking the ball down making stabbing it out of the air for a big interception early that should be massive for their cont a first down for the [Applause] offense quarterback on the keeper and he's brought down but the flag is also [Applause] downal so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty first down for this offense [Applause] looking to pass it's green shoots it to the left that was an eyelash away from being picked off and that is not the way to set the tone with a near pick on your opening drive yeah nice coverage and you'd like to snag that interception but there's always a reason why these thorough brand athletes play defense it's usually because of their lack of hands just and he avoids the hit and slides after the short game well great job there by the defense because they weren't able to get him sacked right away but you saw the coverage in the back end nowhere for the quarterback to throw the football didn't get the sack obviously you don't get the negative play but you also don't give up a big one you're feeling pretty good about where you are right now in this drive getting some heat slings it downi right on the money to the outside he dragged the toe and how about the ball placement only the receiver could get Virginia the offense showing motion from the tight end trying to get a read on the Deep just ran over it defense makes a stop but the chains move in it's first and goal the first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game they'll keep it on the ground for first and goal pushes his way down to the four as they get closer and closer second and goal for the [Applause] offense hand off from the gun the end Z he goes touchdown this running back was not going to be denied nice blocking up front to create a hole for this running back and he was able to take advantage Point makes it seven nothing so that scoring Drive took only six plays and they finished it off with the score from the [Applause] four the kickoff bounces through the end zone they'll bring it out to the 25 Oregon state has it back and here comes the beaver offense boy they hope this next Drive is more productive after throwing a pick last time Jesse Yeah and the coaches did a good job on the sideline there just talking to the Young quarterback and making sure he's able to turn the page calm him down to go out and refocus this drive yeah and some people do that better than others but you got to show some trust in him maybe get the ground game going help around him a little bit with the system you know sometimes even a short game like that can be used to set up something bigger later on no doubt re they can pump that and take a shot down the field don't worry they're going to go back to that same play cuz they know this guy with the ball in his hands is dangerous he makes one guy Miss he can to the house they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that back had absolutely nowhere to run the football actually is he counting I think he's counting to make sure there's only 11 guys on defense this is where you make the money on the drive ball at the 30 it's third and short back to pass it's McCoy throws to the wide out complete to the left he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down That's What's So Scary About This offense they've got guys in the perimeter that can change the game in one single play and you saw right there too much speed on the perimeter to create that explosive play comes out throwing on first down caught in the back field it's Griffin just leaves him grabbing air as he gets down to the 35 yeah and you see running backs in today's football they play a l receiver basically for you but you got to find a guy you and you know he's going to catch the ball consistently after that last completion it's second [Applause] down on the move it's Griffin the Beavers getting up for the first down well I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of Pride and they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the D line they got just enough push there on that run to pick up the first the Beavers are marching down the field wide receiver now comes in motion keeping it on the ground with the single back and runs like that are like body blows in a boxing match four five sixy Gaines early turn into 20 30 40 yd gains later they really wear down defenses and they test their physic out solid pick up a four on first down it's second and six here comes the option now the pitch he's R out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down defense is going to have their hands full trying to stop this guy they better rally to the football and get multiple hats cuz he is not easy to bring down and the Beavers trying to get a touchdown on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the Run he is going nowhere stop at the line of how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions and the D denied him on second and goal just when they looking run now up top and the pass is complete but less than nothing to show for it they're knocked down behind the line now guys that's the end of the quarter and West Virginia has the lead and we've come to the end of the first as we take a moment to check out the stats so far they are lined up and ready to go and get things started here in the second [Applause] they'll try to open this quarter by sticking it in the end zone [Applause] here turning to the running game here on Third and goal tackled there by the defense man if I'm quarterback right now after this long of a drive down this close I'm going for a touchdown here and I get that but I've worn this defense out man I'm going to go for a touchdown right here and if I miss I got to go the whole length of the field to score a touchdown oh that one will leave a mark no good after that Miss still a seveno game Guys West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook on that last Drive defense had no idea what was happening run or pass and that wound up in the end zone Jesse yeah you saw the experience in this offense that last try too on that touchdown everybody on the same page these guys have Reed these plays over and over in practice and in games and it's working yeah so I got to find a way to disrupt it I got to find a way to maybe be more aggressive maybe Blitz mess up this Rhythm they got going and he's brought to the ground but not before he gets enough up for the first down new set of downs after that completion to the air it's green and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down after misfiring it's second down he's looking to throw he tries to take the top off and he bat it away it falls incomplete the defensive back you his variety of skills his ability to turn the hips his speed running down field turning his head to locate the football and then swatting it away you just can't do it better he'll just keep slinging it makes the grab it's Donal and he runs through one tackle and picks up a few he just didn't have a chance to get loose and make his way to that first down marker I think fans upset sometimes like run your routee past the sticks so we get the first down but nice job by the defense understanding where the sticks were and forcing the fourth down Oregon State takes over ready to send the offense onto the field you want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails Drive the ball down the field and miss the field goal David you know what don't leave it up to Kickers execute better offensively I think you move the ball nice you got to keep that in mind but Palmer I think you got to stay aggressive and settle for fi goal yeah because you got to know there's just no margin for error right now you just have got to be able to execute at I I like it just frustrate the defense get them five to six yards make him onor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively touch pass on the Jet Sweep and they'll bring him down but not before he picks up the first down you think about when you hit those guys on the Move man he's already flying so fast and I got to adjust my angle as a DB and make sure I keep outside contained and it's just a it's a really easy play to run to get positive yard especially in a situation like that where you're looking for the first down you run that play you get it nice easy breezy first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just chews up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play with look out there he goes finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down this offense is just so dynamic because they've got Playmakers at all the skill positions right we just saw a big play in the running game now we see one in the passing game there's not one dude that you can key on here if you're on defense to try and slow them down not the most productive half for this offense so far but finally starting to get it in gear first and 10 to move it through the air they'll throw it to the back on the screen he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense hey man sometimes you get the perfect play call at the perfect time that time the defense blitzing offensive line allowed everybody to run up field and they slip in the running back screen and behind it there was nobody there to make a tackle and this offense generates a massive play they and they're scraw defensive tackles they're scraw there're such big jumpers in the Middle where they just lock out those offensive lineman and running backs listen they don't have much of a chance when you got that 300 plus pound guy grabbing you around the shoulder pad you tend to go to the ground pretty quickly know I think a big part of this isn't necessarily scoring a touchdown on that plate but you're just trying to get your offensive line in the rhythm of the game let those Big Fellas get lathered up you have to wonder after missing a field goal on the last Drive how are they going to play this third down back to throw it's McCoy he makes the connection huge game before he goes out of bounds and now they've got it first and goal and that's a really good example of a quarterback and his intended target both being on the same page the timing was almost perfect on that play that's why they were able to convert the third down now setting up first and goal wide out in [Applause] motion they'll use the running game on first and goal they bring him down and he lose yard you see all this movement in football now all the s the defensive line they're sliding right before the snap creating confusion for the offensive line then they're moving back and stunting really good job by the def continue to move continue to stunt continue to get in the back field and make this life hard on this R defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's looking to throw caught in the back field it's Griffin that completion will take it inside the four and the offense is threatening I want to get my running backs the ball in space as much as possible and sometimes it doesn't work in the running game I can throw it to them I can try to create some space out wide dump him the football let him make some catches and see if I can't get some big plays stumbled to the ground quick timeout by the defense there trying to make sure everyone has the same call it's wise not to be too greedy and they'll go ahead and send out the field goal unit it is true as he puts three on the board let's go to the studio now and check in with Kevin Conor Kevin what do you got guys let's recap that ranked on ranked matchup that has just gone final Kansas state was able to squeak one out in front of those home fans in the little apple in fact I think in the end the difference may have been those Kate fans who will enjoy this win really unexpected outcome in this ranked on ranked matchup the type of lost guys that'll get the attention of even a good football team yeah how about that sounds as if they had a good ball game there Kevin thanks for the update got it on the outside it's Robinson got the completion on the last play still some work to do on second down he's looking to throw using the quick game good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch that looks like a real simple play by the wide receiver but give him a ton of credit that was an excellent route he never telegraphed that he was breaking to the outside kept his eyes down field so when he cuts he's able to get maximum separation from and that pass picked off couldn't find a ton of room on that return but that small change they take over at the 43 really nice job there by the defense because I think they baited QB and to try to fit that one in over the middle of the field remember it's a big Zone coverage they've all got their eyes on him back there in the pocket and they just let him feel like maybe I can fit this football in not so fast to Come Away with the pick Oregon state has it back and here comes the beaver offense they've been pretty much stifled on offense so far David only able to muster three points in their previous three drives and you got to find a way to open this up and create some explosive play and the passing game is obviously the easiest way Jesse put more speed on the field find those guys down the field you know they're frustrated too because they felt like there were some matchups they could take advantage of and get some points on the board early in this one they just haven't been able to connect on those opportunities but I like David's idea maybe move some guys around and see if you can create some better one-on-one matchups complete he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down well the defense did job taking everything away down the field but once the drag route was caught they just couldn't rally to the ball carrier in time to make a tackle and as a result new set of downs now on first down from the 28 he's looking to throw it caught over the middle it's car and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup good job by the receiver there not to run into coverage but to find a spot that the quarterback could throw him the ball yeah on those types of routes ree they say if you're looking your booking so if that's man coverage the receiver staring at the quarterback all the way across the field that time the receiver didn't give the quarterback his eyes so they were on the same page they both knew it was Zone and they executed that perfectly this time they were able to keep him in check and stop him short of that first down it's just so nice QB under Center nowadays in football you can trust these guys you put so much on their play and you tell them go get positive yards when it's there and a lot of these guys are such great athletes they do it with ease that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer go and now on third down after that last run to the air it's McCoy pressure coming and he got smacked just as he released the pass it's incomplete and if the kicker can put one through this will be a successful [Applause] drive and the kicker delivers the three ball to finish off the drive that late in a half field goal always gives you a little boost going to the locker room and they'll need to finish off these final few seconds and not allow them to answer and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime to the ground with the back got to be smart and patient great vision uses all of that to get to the 29 they'll line up for a second down play and they're going to play it safe conservative approach here but they'll take the knee and head to Half Time as that's the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update gentlemen what a pleasure it's been to watch these two teams thus far there in morgant and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the defenses and help you come out on top and with that let's take the old country roads on our way back to M Field West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah re for this offense just feels like they just haven't been as physical for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first well and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure cuz the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those juices going and something can start to build looking to go up top on first down incomplete and very lucky that one wasn't picked off and man could they have used that it'll be second down in completion and I've said that a lot and these teams are just struggling I mean the offense just doesn't know what to do nothing's working ground game Throw game it's kind of been a rock fight on both sides trying to get behind the defense man it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on this quarterback has been struggling to find a rhythm in this game so far didn't have a ton of success in the first half so here he is trying to ignite the offense with a deep shot but they're not able to come away with the completion looking to the big tight end got his he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down the Mountaineers had this offense rolling give to the running back just flat ran over it and a nice run there before the defense finally makes the stop coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that nyd pick up on first down and now they can take a shot on second and short wide receiver coming across in motion and he's almost to that first down marker there saying he's a little bit might want to bring out the sticks and measure but it looks as if he'll be just short of the first down we'll see if they go back to the run here on third [Applause] down receiver on the Move gets the touch pass discards a man and the MERS will move the sticks I love the idea and I love just finding ways to get your best players out in the open field this pre-nap motion and using it to their advantage on that last play I think that was a nice call the Mountaineers come to the line with a fresh set of downs they think there's room to run to the right here nice solid form tackle from this sophomore I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you he a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it they bring him down and's going to l a yard on that one yeah they're just going to need more push up front there was nowhere for that running back to go the offensive line got moved right back into his lap and as a result they lose yards on that [Applause] play looking to throw it's green fires to the wide out intercepted and he will step out of bounds but what a play to get the ball back for his offense why I love the job by the coaching staff there defensively matching the Personnel of the offense putting their dime package out on the field so you bring out the extra defensive back you're anticipating a pass perfect timing to run that personnel and you get the pick leaves it with the running back pushes ahead for two they'll mark it at the 17 this offensive line better figure out a plan for this deep tackle he is tough to block with one guy might want to start double teaming him he's going to be a problem moving forward you saw all of his ability on that last picked up two yard on that last one they need eight on second down he's looking to throw fires left it's C finally R out of bounds but he has this off rolling with a first down and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down a confident tough Bishop run gets it up to the 44 I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points 6yd pick up on first down leaves him with second and [Applause] four off the play fake Fire's on the he makes a catch he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense when you're going to run a comeback route you've got to sell like you're going deep and that was a great job there by the receiver really making that corner think he was running deep down the field so he got the corner to turn his hips turn his shoulders and then theer was able to just pivot around to make it an easy passing catch ripping off a good chunk by the 25 and they're set up with a first down every offense wants to be able to run the ball and be physical especially on first down and you want to create second and short third and short or just get first downs like that run right there looking for a physical attack from the gun able to make the stop after a gain of two to the 22 that's a really good job by the defense wrapping them up get them on the ground take away that run game make them onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by after picking up a couple at second and eight fast motion from the offense touch pass on the right and they'll shove him out of bounds after the short gain well and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head of steam when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of a spot looking for a man it's McCoy and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free and fourth down is coming up and they'll send out the field goal unit and he'll Envision the ball fight as he lines it up from the right hash and 38 yd outlit the ight it's good and guys after the field goal now they have the lead so they're lining up to kick it off after that last Drive put a on the board and now the defense will try to shut him down and he'll just take a knee and this drive will start at the 25 West Virginia has it back ready to dive into that Playbook and in a lowc scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful now use it against d I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to GA the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend got eight on first down now looking at a second and [Applause] two they'll run it from the gun Powers through the defender really nice patient job to find some Running Room by this junior when the running back gets going and gets ahead of steam like that so hard to get to the ground that's why you Blitz that's why you bring pressure that's why you bring more guys in the box so you can get him before he gets going but once he got going you could tell it was hard to get a hand on him hard to get him to the [Applause] ground from the shotgun now here's an inside it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up in a good spot got three on first down it's second and seven trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here there to make the Stop and we played three in this one if you like old school running games this has been the game for you and a couple of guys who starred through the first three periods one quarter to go and might we have the makings of a classic fourth quarter finish back at it to open the quarter with this first down play looking to throw it's green just a short pass to the tight end he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting the first down I think it's because the tight ends is so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can release and come out but either way the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come awesome job up front by this defensive line being so good at the point of attack and eating blocks eating some double teams that allows these linebackers to run free unencumbered and get to the football and the pass is incomplete Jarred Loose by the hit they're close enough for a makeable field goal from the 26 but they'd love to convert this third and long on the ground it's Donaldson and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop all the play all the plans all the schemes and it will be decided on this kick absolutely and they go back on top and let's check in with Kevin Conor in the studio Kevin guys right back to your game after we update the nation on this one Michigan found a way to pull out a victory it wasn't vintage Maze and blue football those folks in the big house won't remember this one forever but they remember it was a w it's one game you don't want to react too much either way but I think both teams will leave this one with some things to work on moving forward Kevin thanks a lot for that one ss as if they had a good one there banging slithering whatever it takes to get that ball up to the 32 they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three they'll leave it with him slams ahead for a yard out to the 33 here on third down they'll try to run for it love to see these third down conversions on offense and they're out to their own 39 yd line and that's all you want right you want that first down understand the situation understand I got to get North and South get a first down get a new set of downs the Beavers getting set on First and 10 looking for space it's Griffin the big defensive tackles in the middle they're not always the best pass rushers but they are strong and I say country they put their hands on you you feel it they lock people out on the line of scrimmage they creat separation they wrap running backs up and usually they don't get out of the midst of those big didn't get on first down it's second and nine after run run run now throw going for it all and that's going to be incomplete going for broke on second down but third Down's coming up and that was good defense again and unfortunately we've been saying that all game long really really good defense or listen you can spin on the other side this offense has really been bad they've got some work to do on this third and long from the 40 back to throw it's McCoy they're trying to get to him and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf the Beavers will putt this one away able to get the first one of the day away they did have to send him out three times in that Victory last week West Virginia has it in the offense ready to go to work maybe they couldn't pay off that last drive with a touchdown now they moved the ball down the field and executed like they wanted to until they stalled out and had to settle for a field goal I think if you want to take the next step two here and score a touchdown you got to start finding more creative ways to get your best players the ball let's see if they can do that here my old coach said you'll never go broke taking a profit take what's there take the POS yards never can give to the back they get him on the ground but it's a first down well the defense didn't Blitz they didn't have everybody in gaps and the offensive line took advantage of the point of attack getting some push opening up a hole and the offense ripping off a nice run there they'll snap this one from the 30 on First and T the hand off keep working on that clock they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one they're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up on that play there was nowhere for that guy to [Applause] go power football with the run defense closed down quickly after a gain of three they'll mark it at the 32 this offense thinks that they have enough left in the tank here to run the football and run all the time off the clock they got the lead late didn't get the first down on that last one but it's not going to surprise anybody if they turn around and hand it off again here trying to move the sticks on third down through the air wide open down field good pick up there as he gets the first down and they'll Mark him at the 48 and the Mountaineers look to keep this drive humming we have arrived at the two-minute warning a one possession game as this offense tries to hold on this offense lining up now at the 48 yd line on first and 10 on the ground with the counter we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible they'll be perfectly content to go right back to the ground here on second and eight running back searching for a hole running with power he's run out of bounds but he's got enough to move the sticks man this offense would really like to lean on this guy in the fourth quarter right they've got the lead and you just saw his ability there breaking a tackle he looks like he's getting stronger as the game goes on I'd expect him to get a few more carries here before this game's over they'll go to the counter they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense this drive facing a little adversity on second and 11 the run from the shotgun he breaks a tackle just a Savvy veteran productive run from this junior and this guy really has been a Workhorse today he's made plays when his offense has needed them the most he's a guy who's reliable they know they can turn around give him the football and he'll go make things work out out they're going to need him to finish this game he has to continue playing well after that big run there quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense after the productive first down play it's second and six quarterback takes a knee bad offense good defense no scoring that's pretty much what we had in this one as they come up short in a a bit of a SLO Fest yeah and most of the time in college football it's the opposite right you don't defense optional offense scores so many points this one back and forth offens is struggling trying to make plays defense has put on a great effort and a lot of issues for this offense in this game today obviously and I think the coaching staff now really needs to take a look at how they're game planning and how they're going to give their players
