Final Pro Tour standings [Music] welcome to the upshot multi-world disc golf's podcast about the latest in the disc golf world i am the publisher charlie eisenhood and joining me of course is josh mansfield and the disc golf pro tour regular season has come to an end the green mountain championships are in the books four rounds up in vermont it was really exciting what a way to end the regular season and now we start to get ready for kind of these finales right we've got the match play championship coming up this weekend in pennsylvania we've got the nt finale coming up we've got usdgc we've got the pro tour championship it all comes down to this final stretch obviously we're going to get into gmc on thursday's show we're going to be breaking down everything match play championship but first and i feel like we kind of screwed up not getting to this last week we got to take a look at the pro tour standings and see how things finished up who has qualified for the pro tour championships and what we're going to expect to see at that tournament we still haven't heard like official payouts for this year so i think we're going to see some some big dollars on the line yet again so we're gonna get into that in just one second but first josh i know you played in a disc golf tournament this weekend how was it you know it was really good i not a great first round but a couple good solid rounds afterwards brought me up to sixth uh but more exciting i got to play with a guy named patrick from iowa who came out to visit yellowstone national park visit his son who lives out here in idaho and patrick is a listener of the show and so got to play around with a fan and that was always great love to hear it that's a smart way to do it you build in the trip you add the tournament along with the trip very solid move yeah it's a it's a beautiful time of year to go to yellowstone um okay awesome so pro tour standings let's break it down let's just start with the top and like take a look who won well your top four in fpo paige pierce katrina allen missy gannon and sarah hokum that's right haley king ended up finishing in fifth place interesting no notable after she picked up of course the hundred points for her win this weekend at gmc not really any big surprises in that in that top four group though josh um i suppose missy gannon being at three would probably be the one that sticks out i'm pretty surprised actually to see that missy gannon beating out sarah hokum and hayley king and not to say that missy ganon wasn't playing well but when you look at the difference it's by almost 50 points over haley king so i mean it's an impressive it's an impressive win i think that she did a really good job and you're right though i think it's interesting because missy gannon felt like she was playing well a lot but we also weren't picking her to win tournaments as much like we picked haley king to win tournaments more than we picture began to win tournaments so it's it's yeah i think the ceiling's higher right i mean haley king's ceiling is higher missy gannon's floor is probably higher than haley's and this is partly a stylistic thing but i mean missy gannon you look at her results from this year and she literally only missed the top 10 on you know any pro tour or silver series events twice and of course it was her stretch sense of worlds that really pushed her into this top three you know she wins des moines she wins the stafford silver series she gets you know multiple second place finishes and we know with the pro tour standings you finishing top five is a lot better than finishing top 10 which is a lot better than finishing top 20. the points sort of rapidly deteriorate after that top really the top three so uh some some big scores for her down the stretch really pushed her up and yeah she gets that by the semifinals and i think having the high floor is a huge advantage in the in the style of play of the pro tour championship because even if haley king goes out and shoots another record round you know and just kills it in round in one of the early rounds it doesn't matter when it gets to the finals and so you know missy gannon playing consistently well to just continue round after round advancing and you know she obviously has the buy to semi-finals but that still means she just she can just continue to play good golf and that's oftentimes good enough to advance you to a later round where the payouts get bigger julianna korver qualified so she set out to to to make that one of her goals and remember she didn't play a single pro tour event until goat hill on the silver series otb open was her first elite series on the pro tour so she still managed to uh finish in 13th place and otherwise mostly names you would expect up in the top no no sort of like super surprise misses i think the ones that stand out for sure the mandujano sisters both end up on the outside looking in they're 17th and 18th the first two players out and really it just comes down to the fact that they didn't play enough events in the second half of the season um valerie mondejano suffering that hand injury from the instant pot and didn't play idlewild mvp or gmc and so uh you know just miss out holly finley about 30 points better than valerie mandejano and it's kind of a bummer that we're not going to see them play because it really feels like they belong in that top 16 group the way they played this season i agree it's hard though to say that you know madison walker and holly finley don't belong there though so you know that's the nature of these kind of cutoffs is that you see players who you really feel like should be in there and then you look at who's ahead of them and you're like well that makes sense too so it's it's it's a hard it's a good thing the points are there but it is a bummer to not see the amount of haunted sisters get to to play in it and what i feel like was a breakout season for them kristen tatar played four pro tour events uh one was a silver three regular season events elite series she finished 21st that's what happens when you win three of the four so she doesn't qualify but very impressive nonetheless for chris and tatar obviously would have easily qualified with even just one or two more events played um other notables uh you know so ella hansen 24th ellen widboom you know had a couple good moments this season but you know didn't play a ton of events she finishes 26th zoe andy 28th tiger borth who didn't play an event until d-glo finished 29th and i know we were kind of like given we weren't really giving tiger boar grief last week we were giving the world rankings a little bit of grief but i just want to point out tiger boards played really well in her stretch on tour this season played great again at gmc a name to watch for in 2022. i think the other thing jumping back up to the top it's interesting because when you look at the spread from one to five it goes from 755 points to 577 and then after that it feels like it's a little bit grouped where you could see movement between players but i mean paige was paige and katrina really both just the clear number one and two you would have had to do quite a bit to catch either of them and so it's they very much establish themselves quite high uh in the tournament and or in the season and i mean if you look one of paige's drops she had a 72 point third place finish get dropped it's crazy right 75 place third yeah like several third place finishes got dropped three of them uh right so that that meaning that those were among her worst scores of the season her four worst scores included three third place finishes hello paige we see you uh yeah i mean spectacular stuff from paige pierce and you know i think what's fun though is that the pro tour championship format weird as it may be does sort of just erase everything right you get the benefit of playing well during the season with the buy to semis but then it's just about can you shoot you know consecutive great rounds basically um owens goggins is in the the bottom three that made it cap merch madison walker and holly finley shout out to cat merch who you know isn't really a consistent top 10 place finisher but played a ton of events played a lot of silver series events and was able to pick up the points necessary to make that top 16. and and you know we're going to talk about a similar situation in mpo um [Music] so there you go that's the uh top 16 in fpo moving over to the mpo in this division you've got the top eight getting a buy and then it goes down instead of to 16 players it goes to 32 players your top eight are ricky wysocki eagle mcmahon calvin heinberg paul macbeth adam hammes kyle klein kevin jones and james conrad it feels very appropriate given the way the season has played out and kind of if you just were to rank players in your mind about like who do you think got to buy you'd probably name at least six of those players if not all eight um james conrad sneaking past nicola castro at gmc he scored 15 more points than lo castro finishing 16th place versus la castro's 27th place and that was enough to push him in front um chris dickerson's hundred point score for his win pushes him up but only to tenth so uh he ends up still sticking with that by the quarterfinals just didn't quite play enough events and when he did play you know had a few few finishes that weren't his best and if he played more they would have dropped would have helped him out but ultimately he's going to have to battle from the quarterfinals so what stands out to you here josh adam hamis kyle klein kevin jones all within three points adam hames and kyle klein separated by a tenth of a point uh and and those standings don't matter for the tournament's sake right like those those aren't gonna make the difference when it comes time for the pro tour championship but it does matter insofar as like it's interesting to see of that group that because you know you saw ricky eagle calvin paul great those four are top four wonderful let's let's we can move on now a hundred points behind paul you then get to the next player uh and that is adam hames and so you know of that back grouping of four the hammus klein kevin and james it's interesting to see that you know they even though you know hamas hamas came out on top of that group and it was by a razor thin margin yeah i think if kyle klein had finished one place higher at gmc it would have pushed him above hamas for free i think same thing with kevin jones like good point yeah jones had his score dropped uh with his 26th place finish okay so maybe jonathan so i i we'd have to go and do the math to see like what wouldn't have gotten dropped but here's what i want to point out it's possible there's contract incentives like it's not hard to imagine that you know discraft said to adam hamas if you finish top five in the pro tour regular season standings will give you a ten thousand dollar bonus right i mean that's the kind of thing that like you're starting to see in more contracts there's all these all these incentives for now i have no idea if top five is enough or if you had to be top three or if that's not even a part of a contract but it's something you know you encourage you want to encourage players to play tournaments right if you're their sponsor and that's a good way to do it are there in the in the the pro championship semi-finals are there four cards and one batches from each uh i believe that's correct because you have eight and then the quarters are like the eight qualifiers from the bottom 16 and then the eight who got the buy and then they play an eight advance and then it's eight those eight plus the eight who got the buy to semis and then i think it's maybe it's top four only i'd have to look it up i can't remember now if it's top four from that that group and then there's 12 players but i think it's 16 and the top four scores advance i i think so too okay so if that's the case uh you would imagine that of the guys who got the buy to semi-finals two have to be on each card right well remember that the cards don't matter anymore is it completely randomized well i don't know how they did i don't know how they determine the cards actually but the in the past at the pro tour championship you had to win your card or there were like wild card spots oh right and now it's just the best four scores or the best eight scores or whatever which is interesting a lot better because otherwise it's like this weird randomness with like on your card but but seating for the top eight guys does matter for who's on your card i would assume yeah yes ricky and james should probably be on a card together i would think so adam hames's tenth of a point means that he's on paul macbeth's card instead of calvin heinberg's card i don't know which one i'd rather have to be on this but i know that when when it comes to championship time of any kind uh i think i would take just about anybody else before i would take paul macbeth on my card so well it depends like do you get motivated by somebody else being out there or does it like mess with you you know if they're shooting really well i think you got to just try to set it aside right but it's a good point it's a good point i think i think the thing about card is like more about the energy like you want players that are fun to play with not necessarily like great players or bad players or you know obviously anybody who's playing in these rounds will be tremendous disc golfers sure um ricky beats eagle for the first spot by about a little more than 15 points and what was the difference josh why why does why does he why does he finish 15 points better than eagle well it's because ricky played silver series events bingo uh ricky had the open a belton vintage open and goat hill each worth of 25 points for the wins that open at belton and goat hill and then 15 points from the vintage open and you know that any one of those tournaments if ricky skips any of them eagle wins and it's that's it that's that's the difference and so i'm interested to see i mean this is a clear example and i don't know i don't know if there's additional money because he took first i don't know if but like you were talking about contract negotiations he gets to go back to his sponsor and say i was the top player on the disc golf pro tour throughout the season yeah and that's that's a big boost do you think eagle had the better season on the pro tour or ricky obviously ricky's number one in the points but we know eagle played fewer tournaments i mean i think eagle did you think yeah because when you talk about ricky's player of the year standings ricky's got uh i don't remember which one i think ricky's got oh texas state he's got a national tour win so the reason ricky's still on that same conversation with eagle is thanks to a national tour win and the eagles relying solely on the laurels of his pro tour season because he doesn't play national tour events really think about this of the first five pro tour elite series events that eagle played an eagle played zero silver so that's simple to say he won four of them no five he he won four of the first six yeah he won lvc otb portland and d glow and finished third at jonesboro and then had that terrible 47th at waco but that that's crazy i mean you forget because of the way the season you know goes in and out of pro tours and national tours and silver series and everything else like he was untouchable to start the year on the pro tour and despite that ricky still edged him out so fun interesting i remember like in major league baseball if you want to get into the hall of fame one of the things that you have to do you can't just go out and win a couple mvps and have a five-year career you know two of the years you win mvp and get into the hall of fame no accumulation matters getting 3 000 hits you know hitting i don't know what the cutoffs are for home runs a thousand home runs something like that um getting to these milestones is part of the way that you sort of prove that you have the longevity to be deserved to be a hall of famer and i sort of think about it the same way it's like ricky deserves to be considered the best player on the pro tour this season not just because he had the most points which is sort of like an easy objective way to to say it but because he played more i mean i think you deserve some credit for playing more and that's why you know in the rules of this season with the silver series offering some points ricky does that and he gets the number one spot even if eagle had more impressive overall numbers with more wins it's still ricky at number one the volume counts josh is what i'm saying it does it does and it it proves also i mean in terms of longevity ricky was able to stay healthy and take care of himself and i mean it proves it proves a lot about ricky by playing an extra three or four events it's so great to see him like looking really healthy after looking just so depleted with the lyme disease you know that's not we're not that far removed from that so congrats to ricky for uh his first place finish let's take a look at some of the names i mean obviously all the big names made the top 32 but think about some of the names that also made the top 32 andrew marweed matt auram who didn't play any event i mean he played waco and then nothing again until preserve and he made the top 16. um gavin rathbun ganon burr ben calloway raven newsom the all these guys made the top 32 they're all playing in the tournament we've talked about the young up and coming stars and it's not just like they have like a moment where they like make the lead card one time and you see them on jomez no like they accumulated enough points to finish in the top 32 players in the regular season this is amazing like i think this is like a feels like a sea change a little bit from years past to see ganon burr wedged between paul yulobari and chris clemons two like staples of the tour i think is so exciting and you know gavin rathbun stuck between matt bell and jeremy colling uh you know it's it's people who you and names who you expect to see and we don't even need to mention you know kyle klein and adam hames stuck between paul macbeth and kevin jones right it's it's so exciting to see some of these young players and just where they're fitting in and the tour and it's it's hard to keep track of just how well they do because of how many great players there are on tour right now it's you know if if if it was any other season well if it was if it was several years ago and you saw ganon burr consistently taking in the top 20 um with a couple of top five you know lead card flashes that would be something that we were talking about week in and week out but there's just so many good players now that it's easy to forget ganon burr is consistently making dc you know cashing at these tournaments and cashing well above the cut line with some of the names that we've come to expect on tour okay the bubble last in zechariah johnson number 32. last out anthony barella number 33. okay so let's talk about why this is interesting anthony barella got passed by chandler frye nathan queen raven newsom and zachariath johnson over the final two events of the season mvp and gmc what happened here anthony bareille did not play either event he was planning to come out to mvp it's one of his favorite events of the year his american airlines flight was cancelled and they didn't put him on another flight his rescheduled flight wasn't until the following day so he was going to miss the opening round and you know obviously why even go at that point so ultimately he doesn't end up playing at gmc either maybe because it wasn't decided it wasn't worth the trip given that you know you're not going to play the two events it's a long way to go for him and he ends up missing the pro tour championship because of that with four players getting past him brutal moral of the story let friends fly american airlines okay i it's it's no better than spirit it's no better than spirit take it from me i fly a lot i fly a lot i'm i just made delta platinum okay i've flown all the airlines jetblue southwest i've been on spirit i i for a year i flew american don't do it never do it pay the extra money to fly on delta trust me especially especially if a you know four digit check guaranteed cash brutal is awaiting you because of that flight that's right i mean like you got to spend 600 bucks to take the flight okay you're going to make it back at the pro tour championship mm-hmm it's a guarantee guarantee cash for all qualifiers now he still got a chance to get in because someone could scratch okay someone could scratch it wouldn't be shocking if somebody scratched you know somebody gets hurt somebody gets covered like i think in years past we've seen a player two drop remember simon no showed he had that absolutely horrendous usdgc in 2020 and then he just was like i'm out i'm going home and he was dealing with the injury and stuff but um we'll see i mean that's that's tough that's really tough speaking of simon simon finishes 12 points outside of the bubble or outside the mark and if you remember simon didn't make mvp because of some travel issues uh with mandatory quarantine period i believe coming from canada that's right uh for mvp and so he shows up you know mvp one of his favorite events he always says that shows up and this is a course that he plays during the winter months i mean he plays his course all the time he doesn't have to finish terribly well even in order to get in um but you know travel restrictions again they that that's what got anthony brella and simon however it's noteworthy simon's was not because he chose to fly american airlines so we'll forgive him better josh he knew better um some other players just missing the cut aaron gossage had a chance to get in but didn't score enough points he finished 85th at gmc um casey white ultimately does not get in finishes 36th uh just yeah didn't you know kind of cooled off obviously he had that really hot stretch at the beginning of the season but didn't really pick it up for where you would expect him to be a little sharper i mean he finished 40th and 27th at mvp and gmc i mean two tournaments were i would be thinking more about him as a top 20 finisher so he does not make the tournament uh kayla visca getting 37th is actually pretty impressive he didn't play very many tournaments uh eric oakley corey ellis and austin hannah round out that top 40 group further down i mean notable names that didn't make it nate sexton again that's just about not playing enough events uh brody smith was looking like he was in a decent position but then you know missed everything from preserve onwards and is you know dealing with covet situation that uh seems to be kind of keeping him on the sidelines for now so hopefully he gets gets back and doesn't get a long covered case um who else is notable down here greg barsby 57th brian earhart 62nd uh albert tom managed to get to 65th with his short stint uh four events while he was over in the u.s silver lot 85 was 64. there you go i love albert tom there you go and you know other than that it's mostly players who just didn't play enough tournaments to really get into the mix nate perkins 83rd so you know you could go through the whole thing but sure it's it's it's going to be fun you know obviously we'll have plenty of time to preview all of the the championship itself when we get a little closer to it uh you know the big names all made it uh feel bad for barela and the montejano sisters because it feels like they deserve to be in and you know you miss a bunch of events at the end of the season that's what can happen um so any final thoughts josh before we move on i don't think so i you know the one thing i will say i've said this before i i lightly follow traditional golf right like i like to watch kind of when the majors roll around and keep my eye on scores well the fedex cup playoffs happened in the championship recently and i was kind of looking at it and then i went and i realized they didn't really know exactly how the format for the tour championship was weird i went looked at it i like it less than i like the pro tour champion i think i agree with you tell us about it so you could accumulate points throughout the season until you get to the playoffs and the playoffs have uh i believe it's three tournaments up before the tour championships two or three and those tournaments it cuts down after the regular season to like 125 players and then they play a tournament and that 125 players that tournament is worth like you know two or three times the amount of a regular tournament so it's worth a ton of points so playing well in the playoffs is what actually counts you know if you're kind of near the bubble in the like 60s to 30s mark so you know that you play that tournament and then they cut it down to top is there another one that cuts the top 60 or the cut directly top i think it cuts to like top 60 or something they have another tournament which is like the bmw championships and they you get again like just tons of points from this event and then it cuts down to top 30 in the top 30 play in the tour championship but in the championship the top rated player the top seeded player so in this case ricky would start 10 strokes under par the second would start eight strokes under par and then they have like it they're like you know third through six starts at six strokes under par or something like that and then they just play this tournament they give you a head start and then they say okay now we're playing stroke play yeah but ricky's now 10 under par to start the round like it's it's weird here it's really weird it's a weird event but 15 million dollar payout oh my god is that the purse or the for the winner that was the winner oh my god so who won uh i i've gotta remember his name hold on imagine that fifteen millie yeah fifty really i guarantee nobody would skip the silver series if 15 million was on the line people would be out there like got a broken arm and they're playing with their off hand um let's see patrick cantley can't lay wow 15 million dollars richer damn i wonder if they ship it all to him in a fedex box just stacks of cash um yeah i i i get the concept right the whole idea of these you know these sort of accumulated points championship events is that you want to reward players for having played well during the season otherwise what's the point so how do you do that effectively i mean this works i guess this fedex cup style thing like yeah you give them an advantage it just feels really strange i feel similarly about the pro tour championship it's like the buy system makes more sense but does the you know the complete wipe away of each round makes sense i mean i guess it builds drama and you gotta like consistently play well i mean it is what it is i i think i don't really know what you do to make it feel normal because a normal setting is that everybody starts at the same thing zero even and you can't give players an advantage without doing something weird compared to normal golf so anyway somebody one of our listeners we have the the best listeners we we love you so much you sent us amazing emails constantly making us think somebody will have a great idea for what the pro tour championship could do in the future send us your email send us your thoughts upshot ultiworld.com all right we're going to take a quick break when we come back it's time to talk some gmc wow it was a crazy tournament looking forward to chatting about it next [Music] the upshot is presented by pound disc golf makers of the best bags in the sport if you're following their social media channels you probably saw their latest drops they got the new sex to thorpe bags out and this beautiful black white and red kona panus designed octothorpe so if you want to get your own make sure you follow them on instagram and facebook pound disc golf in order to see when the drops are happening and get your hands on a pound bag welcome back to the upshot we're going to talk gmc but i just want to come back to this really quick 15 million dollars for winning a tournament okay like i feel like if i was a disc golfer professionally and i played a tournament i want 15 million dollars i just be like all right i'm good peace i'm out i'm gonna buy a house on the beach i'm gonna be done like that's it uh i i mean that's probably not you have to have a passion to play professional disc golf right you have to have you have to care about it for reasons beyond the money that you make because there's not enough people making enough money to truly like make it make sense so but man 15 million like what what's i feel like the milestone for disc golf is gonna be when someone wins a hundred thousand dollars for winning a tournament right that's gonna feel like a big deal i feel like 50 is not quite enough to like really like wow say wow um 100 though that's going to be the one Predicting a $1 million payout will somebody win a million dollars from winning a disc golf tournament by the year 2035 this is charlie charlie they did it a million dollars by 2035. i'm gonna have gray hair we should put crazy steaks on it you know like whoever's whoever's wrong has to fly cross country to wherever the other person's living and like set up a three-day uh you know like crazy event where there's catered food and everybody all your friends come and i like it um it's it's so hard to predict because it's you know payouts well one distance but i also think payouts are going to grow kind of exponentially i think we're going to continue to struggle for each you know ten thousand dollars that gets added but then eventually once we get like the hundred thousand mark i think the distance between the you know 30 000 marks the snowball starts rolling down the hill because because to get to that point you have to have some big sponsors coming in and and really juicing the pot 14 years i'm gonna you know what what the heck what the heck i'm saying yes they're gonna get a million bucks in 14 years he's taking the over he's taking the over it may partially be motivated by the fact i want to go out to the east coast to play some disc golf courses well yeah i i think we need to temper our expectations i i'm gonna take the we'll call it the under and say that it won't happen by then because you know payouts are 10 000 right now on the high side 15 at worlds or whatever it was 17-5 um pro championship this year i would expect to be 25 to 40 if i had to guess and like these are good numbers but it's a long way away from a million and there's a lot of steps to go through before then and like is disc golf going to maintain this growth rate i mean if it does then i think it's very possible that we could see something like that happen 14 years from now but you know go back 14 years and what what does that make it 2007 like what was the usdgc payout in 2007. i bet it was about ten thousand dollars i i'm i'm gonna look at it you pull it out this is this is a solvable thing 2007 usdgc pdga i'm gonna look while you're looking i think there's another outside influence that we have to consider as well is the commercialization of college sports and the endorsement deals that college athletes can take i think as you know it's already the case in terms like d1 schools d1 football in order to get into you know somewhere like alabama you have to be playing football since you were five years old i mean for the most part you know you're going to camps you know the right people um same thing if you want to get in to i don't know carolina for for basketball whatever anyway i think as athletes in college will make more i think you're going to see kind of your can't quite cut it as college athletes like i think less people are going to go in with the dream of being a d1 collegiate athlete and as money gets increased in disc golf it's going to be seen as a you know i'm a good high school athlete maybe i should look at disc golf instead of college um because just the way college is going it's going to feel like i mean sec almost feels like the semi-pro league of the nfl uh with it's getting crazy out there what and there was just some news this week like byu's joining the big time byu what is it uh ucf uh are on the list college athletics is just professional sports by another and it's going to continue to get more so and so i think that you know as as more people are like in high school or like well i don't know like i'm not going to be the one making the fat paychecks i'm going to be maybe playing a couple games they may say like well i really want to do sports and i think people who we have college athletes right now conor o'reilly who's like oh yeah i picked it up in college and i you know could have been a basketball player but i decided not to i think you're getting more players who decide that earlier and as you get push of more and better athletes and a pipeline i guess of high school athletes who decide not to go college um and and start earlier then i think that that's also could have an influence on kind of the flow and the increase of pro players that are on tour all right you ready for this teddy 2007 usdgc ken climo beat avery jenkins and he won fifteen thousand dollars no way yes oh i feel real bad about this bet [Laughter] fifteen thousand dollars and i just did the uh calculations uh thank you to the bureau of labor statistics fifteen thousand dollars from october 2007 has the same buying power today as about 20 grand once you adjust what was usd which last year remember 20 grand was the payout for the pro tour championship last year for the winner so now i think this was an aberration okay i think this was a particularly high payout year for usdgc the world champion that year won 5500 in mpo but still those payouts are not appreciably orders of magnitude different from what they are now 14 years later despite crazy amounts of growth now obviously overall purses are growing added cash is growing but we've got a long GMC results & storylines way to go we've got a long way to go anyway gmc let's talk about it what a what a weekend of disc golf up in vermont it's so beautiful up there just watching the golf on the beautiful trees and you know grass of vermont i mean i still remember like heading out to the course in the morning at worlds in 2018. it's just spectacular up there so where do we begin i think josh we have to start by talking about hayley king now it was a crazy final round she had multiple double bogeys up and down and i'm sitting there and i'm watching i'm thinking she cannot lose this tournament after what she did at fox run she just can't and ultimately she did not uh sarah hokum doesn't come up with a clean up shot on 18 misses the putt and that means that hayley king wins by a stroke over sarah hokum fun battle but hayley king really opened the door with some big mistakes on the brewster ridge course but round three haley king shoots a nine under 10 58 rated the second highest rated women's round of all time tied with katrina's round from a few years ago uh and just just a a couple ratings points behind paige pierce's setting number one point 10 59 at 2018 jonesboro wow and it was just it was a beautiful round of disc golf from hayley king and you know what's crazy about it is that she left strokes out there like she missed multiple makable putts for birdie that would have you know pushed her to 10 11 even 12 under and it would have been the best round of all time by ratings um and i mean you have to understand the conditions they were playing in not only is it a course record but it was windy as all hell players were having their discs flip up and fly out of bounds putts were sailing over the basket and haley king was just dialed and she made some hard putts from distance it was an incredible round to watch and what's amazing is when you watch a player do this it's one thing if somebody's hitting like 75-foot throw-ins and like crazy stuff like that but this was just pure unadulterated great disc golf clean shots clean up shots clean putting and it didn't feel like it was some crazy unsustainable thing like if you just watch that round and you don't know the context you'd be like that was a really good round from haley king but you wouldn't necessarily think it was one of the greatest rounds of all time but given the conditions no one else shot better than two under when she shot a nine under amazing performance from haley king because i had my tournament this weekend i was watching a lot of post produced and i saw the tweet about hayley king's round and so i went back and jumped on post produce to watch this round after the front nine i went back and double checked that i was watching the correct round because i was like this is good but like is it i think she was at four under bogey free through nine yeah i mean i was like that's really good but am i looking at the right round like i had to go back double check the tweet i was like yeah okay i am i am i then i had to go back because she missed like you were talking about she missed putts and hit like not even like bottom cage and dropped like skipped off the cage misses on putts holes two seven and eight like and so i'm watching these putts skip out and i'm like how is this a record like i feel like she'd have to be cashing these if she wants the record setting round it it it definitely the back nine is when you really start to appreciate what was happening uh you know the front nine looked solid it but like you said i looked the entire time very sustainable it was it was amazing to watch i mean she was out driving everybody she wasn't dealing with the same wind issues that we saw from some of the other players in the card just uh an electric performance and it gave her enough of a cushion she had a four-stroke lead going into the final round to to withstand a charge from sarah hokum and you know it was an exciting drama filled final round because it was like double bogey birdie par bogey birdie double bogey like all over the place and uh you know i think that's been the maybe one of the issues for hayley king is like a little a few too many big mistakes but she put herself in a position because of her play at fox run to win the tournament and let's look at the numbers at fox run through two rounds haley shot 12 under katrina shot four under sarah hokum shot three under and paige pierce shot two under so a massive lead relative to the competition sarah holcomb got the job done at brewster ridge she was three under through her two rounds with the other players all well over par haley plus five pierce plus five and uh allen plus nine so hokum playing great in the woods what do you know and this was just uh a super exciting tournament sarah hokum continuing to play really well but wow i i feel like it would have been a such a disservice to that round three performance for king if she didn't end up winning the tournament so i'm glad she did i think those scores that we just talked about really highlight the reason i love this tournament like these two courses in my opinion are the best pairings for a single tournament of any other two courses that i could think i mean it's it is exceptional disc golf when you put these two together and it it's so interesting to watch hayley king go from setting a course record to just like white knuckle holding onto the lead with everything she's got despite everything that's happening and i love that i love that kind of back and forth and disc golf in a tournament and you know it of course like you talked about it's aesthetically amazing the courses feel just like they just feel great for disc golf and i you know hayley king destroyed a fox run and that's what took it that's that's what it took you just and it's i think the big thing about that tournament this tournament is that it's not very often i think usually you have to do well at both in order to get the win and hokum is the example right hokum's three under at both was very solid a performance almost yeah and it almost was enough because she played well at fox run and great at brewster and maybe maybe i'm not doing hocum's brewster uh scores enough credit because the differential between hokum who had first overall in brewster between you know an eight a eight stroke difference between her and then haley and pierce at 300 to five over is actually the exact same differential at fox run between haley and katrina of eight strokes so maybe i'm not doing hokum enough credit about how well she played at brewster ridge but it it's it it was a spectacular tournament and hayley king i'm so excited that she was able to take it down you know why else why else i'm excited for hayley king charlie it's because i picked her to win hey yo five point bonus baby oh man i haven't even looked at that yet um king and hokum really separated from the rest of the pack uh they were at seven and six under respectively pierce in third place at three over par 10 shots behind king so uh shout out tiger borth just once again 12th place finish for borth miss again hanging on to another top 10 spot erica stinchcomb up at number eight that's uh a nice performance this is classic paige pierce by the way like more birdies than anybody else but also just spraying the disc into the out of bounds and like taking a lot of bogeys um let's take a look at that how many ob strokes did did pierce have relative to let's say king haley king had five ob strokes on the weekend paige pierce had 13. so there you go um you know from a statistical perspective uh i think what you see from king is just like very solid all around you know wasn't the best from tee to green but was easily in the top four um i think she actually ended up finishing first in strokes gained putting yeah nine strokes gained on the putting green and i think that's a combination of a of a very strong circle two putting performance and uh you know 79 percent from c1x so you know at the end of the day i think avoiding ob was the biggest reason that she won i mean hokum even did better only four strokes out of bounds for hokum really playing to her strengths so super exciting and you know a storybook round from king in round number three uh let's take a look at mpo we had a battle at the top here as well and kind of a similar story right some big separation between chris dickerson who ends up winning by three strokes over ricky wysocki uh but that three-stroke win i mean it was down to 18. yeah and it's it's deceptive because ricky tries to throw in because dickerson's parked and so you know and goes ob and that's because you know presnel is ten strokes behind where ricky was so anyway i just wanna yeah keep going yeah yeah i mean it's just like there's a two-stroke swing on the final hole because ricky was trying to like james so um dickerson you know has a very strong front nine and he's got the lead over waisaki and then you know why sake goes bogie bogey on eight and nine and at that point it kind of feels like all right i mean chris dickerson is gonna walk this in but that's not what happened ricky caught fire he bowed seven of the last nine dickerson had a bogey on 11 he had a double bogey on 16 a brutal mistake trying to get out of the gap on 16 and really did need to go birdie birdie on 17 and 18 and he just threw perfect shots but what i will say i i can't call his tee shot on 18 perfect somehow someway his discs coming in with heat hyzering towards that left side ob where everybody ends up going out of bounds and his discs like is spiky enough and hits just the right amount of upslope like in the undulation of the grass to somehow not go ob even though we then watched andrew presnell and matt oram's drives land further towards the middle of the fairway but then immediately just roll straight out of bounds there was like some divine intervention going on with chris dickerson's drive to keep it in bounds and it sticks and then he threw a beautiful up shot to the pin um but you know dickerson has historically had a lot of trouble with 18 and his drive looked like it was see you later and somehow it stayed in that's disc golf you know what they say rather be lucky than good [Laughter] you're really really really good for what is it like 71 holes and on the 72nd hole you'll take the luck yeah and because ricky's shot was excellent oh god that's one of the better drives yeah it was excellent and if dickerson goes ob i'm trying to think well why sake would lay up right or he would just throw his up shot to the pin and then very likely tap in for bird which puts him at he would have been because he bogeyed eighteen that would have put him at forty on which is where dickerson was at dickerson was at 40 coming into 18 he would have been throwing with you know a par would be very very possible if he throws a clean up shot he takes a par he finishes at 40. so yeah almost should have been a playoff as well could have been thinnest of margins mr margins 18 best hole at fox run yes love it coming down to that's one of the best 18's on tour in my opinion rick it's just there every weekend it feels like i mean right like you know he didn't win here and he has he's cooled off in the winds department lately but i'll tell you what like he is just out there grinding he's playing every event and he's just gonna put pressure every single time i mean how many birdies did he end up having he had four bogeys 13 birdies and one par like it's just relentless 13 birdies and i think uh you know rick still has a very good chance of winning player of the year this year he's going to have to win one or two of these big tournaments down the stretch what's amazing to me about this tournament ricky was 57 in circle two putting granted so i'm pulling up the look he made eight of them so he's eight eight for 14. so that's not like it's a lot it's kind of a small simple size i guess but that means eight for two per round so when you put it in those numbers i guess it's not quite as huge i guess the percentage is kind of um you know a little a little bit off but it's if you look look at kind of the i mean ricky's birdie percentage was so high 60 64 60 64. but easily the highest yeah i mean the thing about it is dickerson was 91 inside fairway hits uh next best was presnell at 81 so 10 percent better yeah he just kept it between the lines yeah the entire way and so even though any 95 c1 x putting for dickerson he's finding the range with the putter how about andrew marweed 35 circle two putting 100 circle 1x putting finishes fifth the dude's on fire right now yes i mean i i don't think he's like his ceiling is quite high enough for him to like win these events but you know you can make a nice disc golf career finishing in the top 10 regularly and uh he has just been red hot i mean let me give you a stat i'm ready i'm ready hit me with a stat andrew marweed let me get his place he ends up finishing 14th in the disc golf pro tour standings okay that's pretty good so he's got to buy the quarterfinals solid very solid he had about 325 total points uh specifically 325.08 271 of those points were earned since ledstone like a month and some change ago that's right 83 percent of his disc golf pro tour points were earned since ledgestone which was one month and one week ago that is crazy so like dude wasn't even going to be in the mix to make the pro tour championship and then he was like oh no i'm about to comb the ball out for a month incredible performance um and yeah that's that's he did it again this weekend he's on fire i mean we i think you gotta think about him for picks in these next few events i i have some advice for marweed he needs to take a map okay put a pin in all these tournaments here on the east coast swing right midwest east coast on a map find the center point on a map buy a house there and spend his entire year practicing these courses show up earn more you know earn more money than a lot of players do in their entire tour in his month and a half and then go back to enjoying his nice comfortable house and uh normal life somewhere in the middle of these maps they're in the middle of this area on the map um he plays so well over here it's insane it's insane i mean he i know he tours more but it kind of feels like like the james proctor of the east right like when when we go out west it's like james proctor's legitimate top five pick in several tournaments um we go out of east got to think about andrew marvel are we this dude hit 39 c1x putts this weekend didn't miss a single one of them not circle one putts c1x putts he went 64 of 64 inside circle one that's crazy um really impressive uh nine under six under six under six under for his rounds and uh yeah it's just been it's been a fun to watch him this last few weeks he's he's up to number nine in the world rankings right now even tiger [Laughter] you know i will say though as much as much crap as i was giving those ratings last week and about i was like why the why in the world is tiger birth ahead of conapanis she beat kona by a stroke this weekend and now i'm like dang it eunisk how did you know they knew projections were clear i guess um andrew presnell also playing really well he finishes in a tie for third place with paul macbeth at 30 under and uh you know he's really heated up these last few events too i mean you go back to uh you know he's uh maybe i'm wrong maybe maybe i'm no i think i'm wrong i feel it feels like he's been playing better but 25th 21st i feel like we've been saying his name a little bit more but no this is this is its first top 10 finish in a while well shout out to andrew presnell then for a great tournament yeah yeah uh what else stands out to you from this weekend like obviously the battle at the top was super exciting uh you know is it i have to ask this like is macbeth what's going on it just feels like he's been a little off the a game lately and for those who haven't followed closely on this tournament macbeth you know you might look and be like oh macbeth finished third you know but macbeth was also 11 strokes off the lead um right like macbeth could have picked any of those courses going on and played around and chris dickerson could have just sat out and still probably would have won the tournament um chris dickerson just destroyed it i mean i don't know it's it is not i think it's a combination of a lot of things some of which are probably unknowns part of it being it's just a more competitive season in terms of who's playing you just have players that are the better and more of them than you have in previous years there's got to be i i'm sure there's some other reasons i you know we talk regularly about distractions for top players like paul and paige you know i'm pretty sure his foundation i know they've announced several courses down in south america um one in guatemala i'd have to look it up so i know there were several announcements from his foundation that he's closely involved with so i imagine that takes time and energy and attention um let me just give you this he did not miss the top 10 at any point until ledgestone and then he's now missed the top 10 twice in three events or i guess four ledstone 18th mvp 11th and so like you know he comes out of worlds he was the best player at worlds james conrad pulled off the miracle he wins des moines following worlds and then he's gone ninth third eighteenth seventh eleventh third for a lot of players that'd be a great stretch of golf but for paul that's it's really i mean it's notably worse than the earlier in the season like he for a stretch there he didn't miss the top five he was he was in the top five from memorial to dynamic this opened then he was sixth at otb then he was back inside the top five until d-glow so it's just been a a little off i don't know we've just seen some odd stuff from him too like is it idle wild where he was like had that bad round and just kind of gave up and just started like chucking it randomly without even trying to like throw a clean shot it was very strange i i you know i'm interested to know if his ankle's bugging him at all that it's a possibility i mean historically when his when his scores start to deteriorate there's often an injury involved it's true so yeah what else what else stands out this weekend matt bell another top five finish our top ten top ten sorry matt bell at ninth mario two killing it yes yeah um i think those are some of the big ones adam hamis in 19th kevin jones on 26th kyle klein and 27th they are a little inconsistent i mean yeah definitely we were given grief department we just finished third you know what the difference is though adam hamis is getting wins um so right like yeah we're like we're giving paul grief for getting third but adam hammas has a win very recently and so yeah well a very cool tournament i i did a cut they had a cut by the way i want to point that out kudos love that we don't need to have all these players on the course for the final round we got to stop doing it i mean what was it mvp it's like getting dark for the end for the end uh you know the end of the fpo you can't have this you can't have players playing in darkness or even somewhat darkness right you don't want to be looking at your watch thinking are we going to make it we got to have a cut so i'm glad you know it's a four round event i had to cut um i liked the split live coverage think about how much you miss of let's say hayley king's round if you don't have the split coverage from dgn i mean you just you're gonna miss yeah maybe you see the shots mostly but like maybe not because she wasn't at the time entering that round she was near the top but she wasn't the leader so you wouldn't be thinking oh we need to show every shot from haley king and so then you miss a bunch of it and instead you get to see all the shots and you get to be there for the whole journey and you know we've talked about the challenges of doing split shows it's a lot of extra work for camera operators and whatnot but to me this is the future josh i have to say i think as it's crazy how think quickly things feel like they uh it evolved because at the beginning of the year what did they start doing this last year and now i forget i think they did start last year right where they had the mpo go off and then the fbo start later you start to see some fpo shots and when you know the mpo is around whole 13 and then you know you kind of get this one seamless show i i think that started it's cool i think it started last year and we gave him a lot of credit for doing that because it was like all right like we're you know it feels like you're engaging people more with the fpo side of the game and i think there is some truth to that still but the thing is like it's compelling enough on both sides and it's frustrating for fans of both sides not to be able to watch the full rounds i do think that especially as dgn continues to grow this is where we have to head and even if that means two separate crews doing stuff eventually right you have two separate groups of cam ops and we're not there yet right it's the same reason we're not a million dollar payouts it's just not enough money there's not a budget for that but i i i much prefer it as a viewer i'm curious for your thoughts i think the bigger concern is on one course tournaments you have fpo who have to tee off during the men's rounds because otherwise you're not going to finish whereas this time you can send the fpo out and they play before the mpo mpo lead card ever tee off because they just play earlier before you have the enormous field of mpo right they're much larger exactly and so i don't know how you do it as well when you only have one course to share i think that's the consideration i mean smaller that's i think that's it i mean it's it's it's other logistics i agree i think it needs to happen i think it's good for the sport and i love having the split coverage you could also go hybrid right you could you could have the early rounds be the combo coverage and then the final round you split it because you do a cut and then you have you say okay like on final days we're gonna we're gonna spend the time to have both full card cover perfect it might work there's there's solutions there's there's middle ground here but i thought it was it was really nice to have that this weekend and i i tend to just prefer it in general it's like i like also to be able to wake up and have disc golf on like i've seen a lot of people commenting lately like i got my coffee and then jomez was on youtube and i feel the same way about dgn it's like oh wow 9 30 a.m there's live coverage happening and then i can watch the men's round in the afternoon that's great uh when stuff starts especially like west coast tournaments it's like the live coverage goes on at four o'clock in the afternoon i'm like this is too late i don't i don't want to sit here for four hours at this time of day on a weekday um i like that's the the rhythm of it more when they're split but i'm curious to hear what people think let us know upshot ultiworld.com we would love to hear from you you know you were talking about the watching the journey and one thing i think that we hadn't mentioned uh when haley on hold on let me make sure i've got the whole right hole 15. she's standing on the tee pad lighting up her fork oh my god this is insane and a tree falls within a foot of the tea pad like a giant branch it was in i thought it was actually the ground like i mean it looks like a full tree that just had been dying and like kind of decomposed a bit and it just like fell over and lands right next to her haley like who's getting her warm-up routine ready looks down at the tree looks back and throws her shot like doesn't step on the t-pad it doesn't go oh my gosh i almost died like just and this is during round three hurt you know historic performance so locked in if if a tree falls during a 10 58 range round does anybody hear it the answer is not hayley king [Laughter] that was awesome all right we have a quick mulligan segment i can't remember if we got to Mulligans this one before did we when you said that uh paul macbeth's disc came in over the baseball field and hit and split we got to the wedged we got to this and people still sent me messages so i hear you i know i was wrong you can quit now i'm going to send you a message every week now hey man the disc didn't split it just make new emails to send it and send me to spam i'm going to make spam accounts just to fire bomb you uh we made a boo-boo last week and uh this is a bad one i i feel a little embarrassed about this a couple folks emailed uh especially shout out to emily thanks for keeping us honest we talked about kona panus's putt last week and like the anhyzer putt um and and sort of like needing to make a mechanical correction because it's just not a very sustainable way of putting well she's made that correction so i just want to point that out she is on circle one putts for the most part throwing a more flat normal putt uh not the kind of like flexing anhyzer now on longer on longer putts she is looking to the annie but that's a more normal thing to do um and i i just i hadn't noticed that so our bat on that shout out to kona for working on the putt and i hope that she can figure it out fully in the off season you know and one thing i i want to include in that and that was in emily's email is that you know the past couple of weeks i admittedly have been very busy i've had a lot of things on weekends and like i was playing a term this weekend and oftentimes when that happens i jump on jomez right i don't have the time during live coverage during especially during the weekday work's been busy uh and so i jump on and i just grab jomas real quick and emily pointed out rightfully that it's disappointing to hear that the default when you don't have time is to catch the mpo coverage and then that's it especially when i know myself i i i try to be as inclusive about disc golf as possible and i i i know you do too charlie you know we both really do and so uh you know i was i was definitely as well embarrassed about the fact that i rightfully had not been watching as much fpo coverage as mpo i defaulted to mpo when my time was spares and so i appreciated this reminder and you know i will be doing better in terms of watching post-production of fpo when i as well as mpo when my time is short and you can see why watching fbo is great when you see what happened this weekend with a wild final round haley king record-setting performance uh so many great stories right now and you know watching fpo i've been lucky to be able to commentate on fbo a bunch this year and it's great so anyway our bat on that mulligan so that is going to do it for today's show excited to be back on thursday we're gonna have an interview with somebody i i have a i i'm gonna leave it as a surprise uh because i think it's gonna be a really fun one and we're also gonna look ahead to the pro tour match play championships we also have a bunch of mail to get to so keep sending us your thoughts we have some awesome mailbag i don't know if we're going to get to it thursday but definitely in the next week or two upshot
