live from Warrior field on the north campus of the University of Waterloo it's OA football on OA TV this evening it's the conclusion of an exciting week one of oua football action as the water Warriors open their schedule against the Toronto Varsity Blues good evening and welcome thank you for joining us on oua TV my name is Adam Maguire alongside former Warrior player and Coach Luke Balon Luke the story line in this one kind of writes itself doesn't it head coach darell Adams who spent almost a decade here as a recruiting coordinator and the defensive coordinator makes his head coaching debut at Warrior field that's pretty much all you need to know about this one isn't it yeah Adam you couldn't ask for a better home opener beautiful day crowd huge everybody's excited to get it get it going yeah it's a great crowd here and the Warriors are going to look to try to use the crowd maybe to fuel themselves here their offense is the group I think that has the most optimism around Camp everybody's grown a bit four of the five offensive linemen from a year ago return both running backs return the quarterback returns lots of weapons uh to catch the ball and so Luke I think that's probably where the Warriors want to make the most hay here early in the season yeah absolutely Adam uh usually the defense actually uh can start the season a little faster as the offense tries to get up to space but uh coach Conway is going into his second year as the offensive coordinator and play caller as you said Nick cor is looking to step in as a starting quarterback for a second full season so uh he's going to be excited to to let the ball rip and uh let's see what they have in the first quarter here and on the other sideline a surprise at quarterback it was what we've been told an open competition in Camp and it's Caleb odonahue the red shirt freshman who will make the start for Toronto his first career start the Whitby Ontario native will be calling the signals and flinging the rock for the blues and it'll be interesting to see how quickly he can get his feet underneath of them especially with the war Warriors linebacking core that according to head coach Chris per Toya and the staff here probably the strongest position group for the Warriors so they'll probably try to make things difficult as difficult as they can on odonahue as he gets out of the gate here yeah we're going to see him right now as the Warriors kick off to The Varsity Blues and they also got a brand new offensive coordinator and Tommy kiches a former Warrior coach as well so excited to see what they uh bring to the table here in this first drive yeah Tommy kiches on the staff here at waterl Jamie Cook the quarterback coach in Toronto was on the staff with the Warriors lots of connections not a lot of surprises here so the Warriors Cole Crosset will kick it off and we are underway in 2024 taken at the 10 on the far sideline and still on his feet hard to see who that was on the far side [Applause] it's the blues with a good return [Applause] though might have been Blackwell on the return couldn't see from here I believe it was Dean Blackwell number 40 in white so a good starting position here at the 36 for Toronto and we'll see what the new look blue offense can do [Music] here handoff is to nairos and doesn't go far yeah the T came out with this simple inside Zone there looks like they're reading the backside end to see if the quarterback could pull and run but he handed it off and uh a little bit of a gain of uh of one or two there great job by the linebackers feeling the holes you're going to call it a gain of one so second and nine right away in on the tackle was kesan Bowen up from the linebacker spot I expect Kean and James to have a big day at the back in court today alongside Arden Martinez the second-year star in the making Odon he will throw took a hit as he let it go and that probably got the air under the ball too much as he took a huge punishing hit into the back field I think it was Bowen again that got through and got a lick on odonna hwit two and out for the blues yeah it was a pretty good play call you got a corner route to the to the short side of the field which is a pretty easy pitch and catch but the uh the pressure on the quarterback really made him rush that throw uh which makes it a little harder and uh you know the the first year guy gets a nice little lick on his first drive he probably feels pretty good now going to settle in after the Jitters and come out for that second drive and see what he has so Sam hanky will kick it away Logan Haru back for the Warriors and also Luka good sign there to get pressure in your first drive that's the big question obviously with losing Tyson hergot yeah we need to see it Haru at his 38 takes it and is taken down quickly a Sho string tackle from cam Gung and the Warriors will take back over after a modest punt return all right let's see what the Warriors come out in here I know coach con likes to establish the Run game early we got Anthony Edwards looking to have a big year this year so let's see if they uh they use him early and often here yeah 99 carries for 560 yards a year ago we'll likely see lots of Miller and Springer both it's Miller right now on the back field first and 10 and it will be Miller takes the handoff gets through first Contact but then Tracked Down from behind it's similar to Toronto's first carry it was a gain of only about one yeah it was actually the same play running inside Zone look in the low line to push the D line a little bit if they can but linebackers filled the holes once again pretty good second and long we'll see how what Co Conway going to come out with and see if Nick can get a good completion under his belt Jeremy Sinclair with a really strong tackle there for the blues the fifth year vet out of Vancouver so it's second and nine from the waterl 44 yd line or or has some time will roll to his right or still with it eyes downfield and cuts up field now to the 50 and didn't get to the marker it'll still be about third and five and this is a spot Luke where we've seen coach bertoa be aggressive before it looks like though they'll just take the punt here yeah I think you you got to play that field position battle really in the game you know Nick dropped back there they gave him a Zone look uh looks like he went through his progressions pretty well and he got some pressure in his face smart move by rolling out not forcing anything you know it's a long game here and let's live to play another day so we're still awaiting our first first down Crosset gets it away and it's a huge kick all the way down to the five and taken down hard there on the far sideline the blues returner I think it was Jake oen maybe on the far sideline hard to see again but the Warriors winning the field position battle early on Toronto's going to be forced to start inside their 20 at about the 18 yd line they'll spot the [Music] ball oh and that'll back Toronto up more they got a penalty there tacked on at the end you know that's that's why coach Pato wanted to kick the ball there really paid off uh pinning the The Varsity Blues deep Warriors get a couple stops here they're probably can get a safety in two points if uh if they can stop him from getting a first down yeah that's it has changed the equation right in the years of Trey Ford we would see third and five ber used to say third and five between the 35s will always consider it but now with the big leg of Cole cross set he's got Pro hang time does cross set and he got into that one and the penalty backs Toronto up even further on the four yd line odonahue sends the motion handoff inside is to naos and Jack nairos is styed after a modest gain of maybe three they pulled the backside guard there and they tried to get him up to the second level but the D line blew up those down blocks pretty well and and we float to the ball so it was a great run stop it's another second and long here for the Warriors defense definitely some new faces especially in the defensive front four down lineman all not starters a year ago as that one is juggled and dropped oine couldn't haul it in my mistake that was Ai and Anthony aupi couldn't pull it down so it's another two and out and Toronto may be in a position here where they're going to have to give up the first two points of the game you know what that was a great strike by the young QB he uh found the win window there on that slant route unfortunately receiver couldn't hold it in uh he's he's going to have a talk with them on the sidelines but they'll find the same [Music] [Applause] [Music] page so ball is spotted at the 6yd line you got to think we're giving they're giving up two here yeah hanky well down B well back into the end Zone you have to figure he will try to take a knee he will and the Warriors Will Go On The Board first two points and the safety as the field position battle continues here early on in this one and the waterl offense has another chance here to get the ball moving yeah hopefully coach Conway can give uh Nick or a couple easy completions on this drive just to just to get him settled in a little bit uh you I know when I played it's always nice to have a couple easy ones either it's in the flats or or just a quick hitch route just to just to feel good about the game so we'll see what they come out in here yeah and that's a wrinkle this year too with the Warriors just because they've they've kind of lost a lot of those veteran receivers that were security blanks we saw Justin sukar in the flats and those absolutely yeah short routes and James baselga being able to stretch the field so we'll see here it's Miller again in the back field three receivers to or's right and it's a fake and or is going to run himself don't know if that was the design there and yeah it looks to me that was a miscommunication between uh Miller and or which was unfortunate but you know Nick is in a heads up play followed the running back to the hole which is what you're taught to do and and you got three yards so second and manageable now and we have seen for the most part around the league so far this weekend this is the last game of week one you're right Luke the offenses have taken some time to get going here play clock down to five or second and eight for the Warriors or to throw or sets his feet in the middle it's caught it's Evan baselga and that's the first first down of the game for the Warriors that's a great play by Nick he read the blitz they brought six-man pressure which means you should throw hot off of it to the receiver closest to you ran a slant uh delivered the ball in a great catch by baselga there yeah and that's something head coach Chris perya talked to me about earlier in training camp was just working on or's decisiveness making a decision and letting it go and we saw it there it was a first down for water loop handoff is to Miller Miller hits a hole and Falls forward got about five there on the first down carry as the Warriors are across Midfield that's a great first down run you know you want to get four to six on first down so five is perfect opens up the Playbook on second down really can do what you want here so we'll see what coach Conway uh dials up ernan Conway now in his second year as the solo OC calling the plays he shared the title with head coach Chris per Toya back in 2022 second down and five or pressure comes it's picked up and or's got lots of time he's going to pull it down and go or will just get enough for the first down he is down right at the marker it looks like so or didn't like what he saw downfield and saw the pressure stepped up and scrambled for five when you can get pressure from a four-man Rush on a defense that means there's lots of guys in coverage so there's an opportunity to run especially if they're playing Zone uh and that's what Nick was able to do and move that chains and awesome play yeah Toronto defensive coordinator Bob Mullen of course sticking around from the previous regime but between his defense and Coach DA's defense probably some things that the Warriors have seen before or pulls it out now he'll throw and it's Tierney with a catch Tyler Tierney with a gain of about eight and the Warriors have the ball moving now yeah that's a staple play in The Warriors offense we called a slip route bring a receiver from the wide side of the field into the Flats on the short side after the snap uh Nick can read the read the running back he can give it to him he can pull it he can throw it he can run it so lots of options there I really like the play call yeah you know the option play calls are still very much part of this Warrior offense aren't they Luke absolutely yeah you know hold over from the try years but uh they're still in there and they're still effective or's got a big body and he can move he's 63 and 222 he's going to throw this time Far Side and it's caught Hogle Marcus Hogle pulled it down he had a huge game against these Varsity Blues in week nine last year as the Warriors punch their ticket to the playoffs with a 26-21 win down in Toronto he gets his first catch of the afternoon for a first down that's what we like to call a big league throw WID side out he threw it before the receiver even turned great timing that's what you work all offseason on that chemistry Vogal being an upper year guy you know love to see that great pitch and catch that's a long long throw from that near hash mark all the way to the field side or's going to throw again and it's caught again that's Romel Samuel slokum getting his getting the ball out of his hands quickly and that's another first down for waterl they're inside the red area now that's what we like to call an RPO a run pass option so Nick read the linebacker as he put the ball into Anthony Miller's uh Red Basket linebacker stepped up pulled it hit roml uh on the run there perfect play so water's got the ball moving here on the 16 yard line hand off is to Miller and Miller bounces off one tackle and finally taken down by a pair of Blues kinale philli was in on the tackle that name familiar because he was the last time the blues were here at Warrior field in 2022 the starting quarterback for Toronto that's right he moved uh moved the boundary half I believe he is the boundary halfback the starting boundary halfback today for the blues and helped clean up that tackle after the first Contact on Miller gain of maybe two and a half they're going to call it second and eight here from the 14 yd line Hogle and Tierney on the left of or or's going to go to his right it's baselga and baselga the ball came out out and they're going to rule it incomplete so they're going to say baselga in the act of trying to stuff it away drop the pass and it's third down yeah I mean incompletion is better than a fumble there as it looked like it might have been uh he just ran a simple out route to the boundary it was a good strike by Nick but he just couldn't bring it in but three points is huge here and the Warriors got the ball moving most importantly and maybe most surprisingly primarily in the air coell The Long Snapper Nolan caban the holder and Cole Crosset kick is up and kick is good from 21 yards and the Warriors up 5 nothing now as we're about five and change away from the end of the first quarter that was a great Drive by The Warriors mixes a little run in pass got some manageable second Downs in which we have some options on the table which is great I really liked Nick's Poise there ran a couple first downs through a couple strikes um yeah just got to keep building on that momentum as we move forward in the game here yeah winning first down is such a huge thing in the field position game of the Canadian game and you're right Luke it just so many options that you have when it's third and five as Oppo second and five pardon me instead of second and eight or nine so o in the Varsity Blues offense back on the field that pass is complete Thomas Roberts calls it in and takes a hit for a gain of maybe six The Varsity Blues went to quads there so four receivers to the field and went one-on-one isolation to the boundary on a hitch route and that's sort of the plays we're talking about where we we get this quarterback in Rhythm catch it throw it a simple first down and now it's a second and short so that's a good play call James hinsberger getting the play call that's a change this year too the communic in the helmets James hinsberger has it for the Warriors at the middle linebacker spot second down the pass is high in the air and it's too far out of the reach of Anthony aupi looks like they went back to that hitch rout but this time to the wide side which is a much harder and much longer throw quarterback's probably pretty lucky he threw it over a that could have been pick six to the house if it was on target yeah I think it might have been LP more in coverage here three picks last year for Anna Su lmore so another two and out for Toronto and the Warriors defense holds heru will be back to try to field the punt from Sam hanky kind of a low liner at the 26 Haru makes one move now a second and Logan Haru Jitters his way up to the 40 yd line small and shifty is her but certainly got the most out of that return he could have all right let's see if the Warriors can build off that last Drive which they went all the way down the field expect to coach Conway to call a couple run plays early here and see if we can get Anthony Miller rolling a little bit Miller the lone back behind Nick or third Drive of the evening or to throw now he's got to get flushed out can't get back to the line of scrimmage and he is taken down Parker Williams I think was the first one to get a hand on him the charlott Town PEI native the defensive tackle for the blues and maybe just back to the line of scrimmage the Warriors came out with a tight end of the boundary and four receivers to the field and and try to go play action so they hit a gave him a run look and try to go play action and catch him by surprise but the the varsity Bo defense did a great job recognizing it and covering down on the pass so that sets up a second and 10 or to throw pressure comes he steps up has a man in the middle of the field and it's caught by bazal Liga he took a big hit did Evan baselga but he hauled it in for a first [Applause] down and and the big man from Thunder Bay is back on his feet after getting Rock but enough for a first down for waterl great pocket Presence by Nick there stepping up they brought a Sam Blitz a strong side linebacker Blitz he stepped up to the weak side and and found uh found Evan with a strike and you know that's hard to hold on to those when when you don't see the DB coming but uh awesome play EV basila 63 227 but when you take a hit like that right kind of in the small ear back back you're going to feel it through your bones that's right first down now the handoff is to Miller Miller couldn't bounce through got taken down there from behind dragged down by lar Ro aafu that was close to Breaking that one just got Sho stringed up and and linebacker came through the hole to clean it up yeah we've seen a couple of plays now where the blues on that back side have been able to grab the shoe tops just before a break for the Warriors rushing game 205 to play in counting here in the first quarter five nothing the Warriors continue to lead or will throw or goes way deep Tierney got his feet caught up there with the coverage of Joshua Carter and it was too far for Tyler tyy who was streaking down that far sideline Warriors ran a a vertical concept there where where Tyler being the second receiver from the from the field run straight down trying to pull coverage with the other receivers uh but great job by Varsity Blues to staying home Nick wanted to take that shot which I'm okay with unfortunately couldn't complete it back for the punt for the blues is Jake oen he turned some heads here at the East West Bowl had a really good week here back in May it's a fake it's Anthony Miller can Miller get around the corner he spins off one and Miller has the first down Anthony Miller the direct snap fake it's a first down for waterl there there's coach Bert calling him up middle of the field punt catch him by surprise they got they're starting running back in there Dr mman first year uh special teams coordinator is going to be excited for that one coach Erdman putting his stamp on this one early with the fake Punt and a new set of downs for [Applause] waterl so the ball sported spotted at the Toronto 43 or is going to throw again or has to spin around from the pressure now or Miller it's too far for him and or just wanted to get rid of that I think and put it in a spot that if Miller couldn't get it nobody could yeah they had Tyler Ty number 13 again on a vertical route but once again the safety saw the verticals coming and uh and shifted over there so it's a good no throw by uh by Nick or scrambling try to make a play throw it where it's either his guy catches it or nobody catches it that's a smart play live for second down here Owen Cassie the safety on that coverage on that vertical route a veteran a stal of this Blues defense so second and 10 here or a throw again or will step up and now or in a lane puts his shoulder down does he get enough not quite he's about a yard and a half maybe two short so is this a Luke I'll put you on the spot here is this go zone for you is this a field goal for Cole crossette what do you think yeah looks like to me I I would I would go for it here uh you know third and third and a couple bring in the big boys try to run it up in the middle you know I wonder if coach ptor is going to talk to Nick on the sidelines later about getting down on those you can't be taking too many huge shots I know he's a big kid but uh you know we got a long season ahead of us Warriors tried to set up a swing screen there and the Varsity Blue snuffed it out really well so again another good job by Nick to uh to run the ball and get the positive yardage last play of the first quarter under Center isor he's going to give it to Miller Miller second effort did he get there I think so it's really close the feet were moving the feet were moving he got hit behind the line to gain and it is a first down the second effort from Big Anthony Miller 6-1 and 210 out of Brampton turn the legs just to get the first down here for the Warriors so they will return for the second quarter here as the Warriors continue to March inside the 35 we'll be back after this [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back to Warrior field start of the second quarter waterl leads 5 nothing Adam McGuire and Luke Balch with you as the Warriors have a first down after a big third down conversion to end the first quarter Luke and good to see the physicality of the running game get going even if it's not maybe broken for as many yards as the Warriors would [Applause] like Quinton Springer now in the back field maybe just quarter by quarter here for the Warriors Quinton Springer Springer hits the hole Quinton Springer that's a big gain on first down the Warriors Got That two-headed monster Quinton Springer comes in he's more of the lightning in the bottle he hits the seam real fast right now and and uh so it's a change of pace for for the defense for sure and the Warriors have talked head coach Chris bertoa and the whole staff about getting Quinton Springer to run a little more north south than east west and hit those holes we saw a good example there and it was enough for a first down they moved the sticks to the 21 yd line Springer in the back field again or repositions him hand off is to Springer Springer into a hole that's closed up quickly by kinel Phillip and it's a gain of two on first down yeah that's like what we' like to call an outside zone so we're really trying to get outside but if the defense flows too heavy which they did there there is a cut back Lane available and just as you said Adam that that north south Great play by quitting just to put the foot in the ground get up field second and two not what we want but also better than getting tackled in the back field so you know coach Conway last year really preached Red Zone opportunities and trying to get touchdowns instead of field goals so uh we already settled for field goal earlier we'll see what coach uh dials up um Petoria and comr now as they get to talk to uh talk to the team and and see if they can uh come up with something here to get touchdown yeah that was definitely something that the Warriors would like to have improved on from a year ago in the red zone 18 for 23 in scores but only 11 for 23 in touchdowns inside that red zone so finishing drives is a big point of emphasis this year second down and eight Miller back in now or to throw or waits for the play to develop goes to the far side and it's knocked away Devin khaw on the coverage he was looking for baselga I do believe Brett timbe was over there too and the throw was knocked away well there by crenchaw that'll set up another field goal attempt for waterl yeah what they did is they took Anthony Miller and they motioned him out to the receiver position nobody ran with him so that tells Nick it is going to going to be zon Nick ran through we had a little sail route or Corner route to the outside unfortunately uh we just missed him but that was a great defensive play by The Varsity Blues Devin khaw got up and knocked that one away so this one from about 26 is Good from Cole Crosset and the Warriors tack it on it's 8 [Applause] nothing A's moved the ball effectively here Luke and just haven't been able to finish Drive as of yet but on the defensive side of the ball pretty much uh as good of a first quarter that the new defensive coordinator Kevin mcneel and the warrior staff could hope for I'm absolutely liking what I'm seeing on defense and if you're at Varsity Blues you know coach Dell Adams is going to tell the team we've gotten beat and it's eight nothing that's a one-score game so they can just stay patient and see what the offense can deliver here Donna hu back in for the Blues [Music] hand off is to Ellis this time and Garrett Ellis gets a good start there that's a nice little inside Zone once again uh a great Push by the uh o line they actually took care of business on the front and got up to the second level which is what you need to make a big uh big play on the Run game so second and short here let's see if they go standard our quarterback sneak or they try to do something sneaky here odonahue 6 feet and 195 so it'll be be interesting to see if he's yeah he's going to stay in the gun here so not under Center on second and very short he's going to hand it off and there's a hole Garrett Ellis breaks it Garrett Ellis up the middle and Ellis can he go at the 20 to 10 he's taken down from behind by Isaiah blackon who saved a touchdown but a big play here from The Varsity Blues will get them knocking on the doorstep yeah what often happens Adam when you when you bring the pressure and try to stop a team on second and short all it takes is one crease and you're gone as the the linebackers are all pinched up so that's what happened there love to see the speed from the big boy great effort by The Warriors to chase him down but uh that was that was a huge play by Ellis injured Warrior on the field I think it's Marcus Ola looks like he's cramping up in the heat here yeah this is a certainly in the interior of the offensive and defensive lines not the ideal temperature maybe the kind of game the quarterbacks are fine with but it's hot today for sure as a QB we're loving it there's no wind there's uh you know obviously no uh rain or anything but yeah OD line are going to be needed to to rotate especially on the defensive line here get fresh bodies in we'll see what the Toronto Varsity Blues do here again once again in the Red Zone um you know good opportunity here to to come out with some points for sure in the back field now nairo for Toronto after Ellis on the big gain hand off is to nairos and doesn't gain much there maybe two or three yards down to about the six yeah they went back to the wall with the inside Zone but Jack hinsberger knew it was coming and really filled that Gap nicely we see what Tommy kishis comes up with here as offensive coordinator yeah balls in the middle of the field you know second and goal here pretty much any play that he wants to run you [Music] can it's like maybe stoos now in the back field it is odonahue is going to throw he's going to roll odonahue can he get to the end zone odonahue touchdown touchdown Toronto Caleb odonahue in his first career start scampers for the pylon and the blues have the first major of the evening yeah they ran a cross concept expecting man-to-man defense that have brought some receivers from the wide side onto the short side as Don who rolled out there was a receiver open in the end zone so the DB really had no choice but if he came up to tackle donu he would have just tossed it over his head so he tried to play 50/50 and played it pretty well but uh a great athletic play by 16 so Toronto pushes back here as Sam hanky will try to tack it on to make it an 87 game he will and the big rush that was Garrett Ellis's up the middle on second and inches sets up the blues touchdown the Scamper from Caleb odonahue we at 87 yeah this is what you got to expect from this game last year these tombs were virtually even in all statistical cat atories offense defense uh even the record they came down to the last game of the year where Warriors had to play them at Toronto to get to the playoffs so I expected a tight game and that's what we're getting so far yeah not much separating these two teams a year ago water 3 and five Toronto 2 and six the game they played down in Toronto 26-21 the final for waterl and late in that game it was a tal Ibraham touchdown run that pushed waterl into the lead that they wouldn't relinquish so back and forth we go lots of optimism around this Blues program too with Coach da obviously and his history with being able to recruit and get the most out of players long deep kick on the kick return take out all the way can he get there and finally forced out of bounds yinka oote with a huge return for waterl that's a great way to steal the momentum back after that score that was a classic case of what we call outkicking your coverage you know kicked it a little bit too far which gave the returner lots of momentum coming up and to find his blocks the Warriors starting uh pass Midfield here so a great opportunity to to answer that score by The Varsity lose yinka ogot not even on the depth chart as one of the three returners so things already kind of cycling in and out personnel-wise on the kick return game and it's a huge return as or now will throw and has a receiver it's Brett timbe on first down that was a great play we motioned from trips weak to trip strong we saw the defense rotate we knew they were going to be in zone simple hitch route to the outside great first down [Applause] call so The Return by ogot and one little Quick Pitch and catch from Ora timek and we're watching The Warriors now already down to the Toronto [Music] 40 or is going to run it can't can't find a hole though and he's driven backwards piled on to there by Tucker Burke that was a design QB run that time you know get one more body to the to the point of attack to try to outnumber them uh great play by the linebackers for filling the holes there for the BARC GL we got second and long here almost in field goal range uh we'll see what uh what Nick can get uh get completed here Toronto with lots of experience and size on the defensive front 25th year eligible and a fourth and a third on their starting defensive line or on second down and 10 he's going to step up again is Nick or Nick or taken down short of the marker maybe a yard short so now another decision time for waterl yeah you got to think they're going to go for this here waterl Warriors went empty so three receivers to the one side three to the other side linebackers really dropped out to those to those receivers which uh gave Nick a lane to to run up the middle yeah it's third and one and of course with the bigger neutral zone absolutely third and one has got to be a go and and likely with your 63 quarterback yeah you got to think sneak here maybe an off tackle to catch him off by surprise oh oh or a bit of a mixup but he's got room now or to the near sideline all the way down to the 10 can he cut back up field forced out of bounds inside the five a broken play made the most of by Nick or and now the Warriors knocking back on the door that's a great heads up play by Nick you know saw the motion was not timed right which is what screwed up the handoff he went back to the to the short side of the field and and turned the Jets on there we go yeah the worst version of that play luk is the ball comes loose right and hits the Man in Motion could have been bad and then the best version is probably what we just saw all the way down to the two or is going to go under Center Miller behind him or Miller Miller into the end zone touchdown Warriors Anthony Miller from two yards out and the Warriors respond that's Smashmouth football there simple power we pull the the backside guard to the front side lead him up into the hole with a couple down blocks you know coach Matt Fraser on the old lines got to love it coach Fraser that's his bread and butter for [Applause] sure something head coach Chris ber toas talked about too is the complimentary kind of styles that they've he and Coach Fraser have been able to work obviously Bert a former offensive lineman in this league and an offensive line coach at Western just having that balance of knowledge and experience in you know blocking for the pass rush and that kind of Smash mode football where you need two yards to get to the end zone yeah I know coach uh Fraser and beroya you know just love calling power and just just saying we're better than you at this at this point of tack instead of trying to get tricky trying to throw the ball uh let's just let's just let's just power it in and the old line gets lots of confidence off of that off of the play call off of the touchdown and hopefully they can carry that into uh momentum of for the Run game moving forward yeah in a really experienced offensive line that was big for the Warriors four of the five offensive linemen returning including Winnipeg drafty Ethan calra at Right Guard Devon Martin at left guard moves over and then the two tackles obviously Nick jadaro and Daniel Dove jadaro has started since his first year he's in third year now Daniel Dove was another one of those East West selections here at Warrior field back in May yeah getting Ethan back you know from you know getting drafted going to Camp getting sent back to continue as a development is really huge he's a leader on the offensive line and uh he really sets the tone for the group kickoff is in the air it's going to be Dean Blackwell at about his three yd line Blackwell weaves his way up and Blackwell is taken down before he hits the 30 yd line I think on the stop there was Michael omeni who made a number of big-time special teams plays a year ago as a rookie another just another member of that deep linebacking core and pretty obvious to see even when the depths charts come out Luke and see the depths of uh the linebacking core at waterl and you know we've talked about James hinsberger already we talked about Kean Bowen and then Arden Martinez the coaching staff expects huge things from Arden Martinez starting now in his second year and played every game last year and dressed for and was just not able to crack the starting lineup and now at that Sam spot they're expecting big things from the Niagara Falls native yeah it's one of the hardest positions to play on defense that same Sam linebacker you got to rush the passer you got to cover the running backs you got to cover the receivers and and so he's been playing really well and I like seeing James in the middle too flow into the ball so the blues handoff here is to Garrett Ellis again and Ellis he's had the most success for Toronto running the ball so far that's a gain of five or six maybe on first down going to call it a g of seven in fact yeah Toronto's coming out in the 22 look so two receivers to each side with a fullback and in a tail back in there and they're just playing uh just running that inside zone so just getting push on the D line and and climbing up to line backer I've impressed with uh with 28 running in between the tackles here yeah using that fullback instead of the kind of the h-back Jack of all trades type position Odon to throw and it's caught for a first down slid it right into Thomas Roberts did Caleb odonahue and a good throw that maybe the Warriors had some wide eyes on there on this boundary side but he was able slide it inside to Thomas Roberts for the first down yeah they went quads which moved our our half back over to the field side so the only person to take that away is our will linebacker he was in the Box defending against the run which they've been successful on which allowed that completion on that slant route using the run to set up the pass working for the blues so far odonahue the Southpaw this time connects with Jake oen and oine and Isaiah blackon Exchange some pleasantries here on the near sideline on Toronto's bench yeah I like what they did there Adam they took oen and put him at X receiver uh just ran a simple hitch route he hasn't got the ball yet he needs the ball in his hands that's one of their Playmakers so just an easy pitch and catch let's get him the ball and get him involved in the game plan so nice play call by Tommy gishes four touchdowns a year ago for osine led the receiving core of the Blues OD Donahue pressure coming Miller can he track him down odonahue sidearms and it's caught oine in the middle and Caleb odonahue keeps his eyes downfield in the face of pressure and moves the sticks for Toronto that it looks like the uh the first year sted here is starting to feel pretty good about you know making some plays getting outside of the pocket getting a little bit more confidence under his belt that you know we had a great pass rush he rolled to his right as a left-handed quarterback threw across the body a little bit but it was a safe throw as the receiver was planted in the middle so first down and 10 for the blues at the waterl 35 under six to play here in the half odonahue has to get rid of it Garrett Ellis with it and Ellis on the little swing gains about six on first down it looks like coach McNeil was expecting that inside Zone there as he as he mugged up uh six six boys to the line there four defensive lineman two linebackers little heads up play on a quick swing pass by the quarterback for a positive first down game and they're getting some great second down looks here second and five and less and really open up the Playbook so um feeling feeling pretty good for the Varsity Blues right now we need to switch it up on defense and uh you know try to get some pressure stoos in the back field now on second and five pressure comes the throw is caught Chris Joseph on the cross and he will go to the end zone and score ball was out in a nanc Chris Chris Joseph hauls it in and scores a touchdown for the blues yeah looks like they were thinking when I was thinking and Coach mcneel brought the blitz they had a great play call on with a with a quick uh Crossing route from the wide side to the short side and that's that's the hot route and uh you know that's a great accurate throw hit him on the run and at six so Toronto climbs back in to within two and one here if hanky can knock it through back and forth we go after a bit of a tentative start on the offensive side of things pinky hits it through and it's 1514 once again this is is sort of the game we expected back and forth I think the offense has started slow in the first quarter but now they're starting to understand what the defense is bringing coach mcneel as a first time defensive coordinator here and obviously a new coaching staff of the Varsity Blues now they sort of understand you know what the game plan is and it's up to the coaches on either side to make adjustments as they head into the late second quarter and obviously at halftime will be important as well I've been really impressed with the warrior special teams though and let's see if we can get another big return to to once again change of momentum Haru and ogot are back for the kicks OTE almost hit the home run there in the last return after Toronto scored a touchdown this time it's going to be to Haru just inside of his own End Zone Haru with some speed Haru is crushed taken down at the 10 a huge hit [Music] Graham Lloyd on the coverage laid a lick on Logan Haru and the Warriors have a long field here with 447 to go in the half yeah this is a big drive for the Warriors see if we can get a couple first downs calm the storm a little bit we got Quinton Sprinter back there so we'll see if uh you know he can break one Springer in the back field two receivers to the right of or three to the left Springer spins off one Springer still trying to turn forward but again on first down not much on the run and let's see what they'll mark it maybe a gain of three yeah their defensive line is doing a great job those big bodies inside at the nose tackle uh in tackle position of holding up not letting the uh Warrior o line climb to second level on that zone play so second and uh yeah six and seven here see what Nick can uh can come up with and we'll see if he has to continue to use his legs or if he can gets a couple completions or sends the motion or to throw got it out quick and it was [Applause] dropped it was intended for rmel Samuel slokum and a little bit to the back shoulder as slokum tried to turn around couldn't haul it in so now waterl is going to have to make a decision here too to punt it away or to concede the two The Varsity Blues ran a a cut coverage to the field here so the the the halfback is running deep and that's where the window is when you run an out route from number three so great accurate pass by Nick also a great read into that zone but just unfortunately he couldn't haul it in you got to think he's going to give up two here yeah cross set's heels on the goal line oh he's kicking it away he's going to kick it away high kick o takes it just about at Midfield two yards to this side and oos makes one man miss and O down the sideline taken down at about the 33 yd line it was a high kick and got the coverage down there but oos made one man miss and then spun it up field yeah that's the tough uh tough decision to make when your your heels are on the goal line but you do have an all Canadian punter uh you you want to try and get a big punt out of him with no return if you had no return it would have been good obviously we did not get that so already in field goal range for the Varsity Blues here so big stand coming up for the Warriors defense 328 to go and yeah you're right Luke at this point three probably feels like a victory odonahue to throw again he's got a man and leveled after making the catch is Nathan Bullock hauled it in but a big time hit yeah Warriors ran a big cover four there and they had some vertical routes by The Varsity Blues which is uh you know what you want is a cover four cover four so the the Tonto Varsity Blues uh oon came underneath but the will linebacker was sitting there and uh you know showed him who's boss Kean Bowen again with a big time hit another one of those East West participants Bowen a Calgary native yeah Bowen played in the middle last year and he moved out to will linebacker um he's playing well will linebacker a little bit more coverage responsibility you had to take on that number two receiver at times in zone which which has been doing well and and really giving James hinsberger some some more freedom to flow around at the at the middle so inside three minutes now and a second down and long for Toronto and procedure that's a big time break for the Warriors here and maybe just the communication from a first time starting quarterback and this will make a second and long second and longer yeah from from the sounds of it from up here I think they went on two a couple receivers didn't uh didn't get that memo and and jumped the [Music] gun so offside against the blues you got to think the Warriors are going to play a little bit of Zone here and try to make him throw underneath and and rally and tackle and potentially take that field goal opportunity odona throw up the middle he's got a man caught by Joseph again Joseph in the middle of the field hauls it in and that moves the sticks on second and 13 that's exactly what we got we got a cover four look but the linebackers did not drop and I was really impressed with Caleb there he saw the cover four he came underneath on a on a little angle route accurate pass and and uh the ruing the chain Toronto's offense here in the second quarter looking well oiled and they got Ellis back there you got to think always motion out Odon H to throw he's going to throw oine this time taken down Arden Martinez on The Tackle after the short little pitch and catch to Jake oen yeah it looks like coach Tommy was expecting man they ran those Crossing route Concepts again which they scored on the first time but Kevin mcneel went uh went Zone which which was a good idea and stopped him for a short game so another second and long here again if the Warriors can make a stop here it would feel like a victory odonahue to throw looks at the end zone odonahue intended for oen and he was leveled by anesu lmore the pass went through his hands that's a great defensive stop there great defensive play they tried a little pitch and catch out tied to their to their main target uh even if he caught that I don't think he was getting the first down yeah it looks like he he looked to the goal line and didn't have where he wanted turned immediately to that near sideline and osine just a little too high and maybe a little too much zip on that one yeah he wanted to throw vertical to the second receiver but we played zone so it was it was a good read uh not really an accurate throw but uh you know hold to three is is huge so hanky from 19 is good and it's now the blues with their first lead of the evening 1715 here with 205 to go in the first half so two minutes is is obviously a ton of time in in Canadian football uh can still run run the ball pass the ball we got to mix up a uh you know our play calling a little bit here and and see if we can drive down the field and and three points at the minimum here would be huge to go to halftime with the lead for the Warriors it absolutely would be luk and and I think the most success the Warriors have had is or getting the ball out quick we'll see if they try to put together some quick routes [Music] here or has to spin away from pressure or sideline and and that's a reception for head coach Chris perya on the water sideline they ran another RPO there so run pass option looks like or was looking at Tyler tyranny but uh I'm guessing he had a slant route on which would have been the play but he did not run his route there potentially he thought it was a run play and so now we're dealing with second and long so the waterl offense still trying to iron out the Kinks here haven't got the Rush game going just yet second and 10 or or to throw or penalty flag is in the air that's going to be against the Warriors and you'd have to think this could be declined that'll be a decline we have to bring the punt team out yeah it's second and 10 and it wasn't completed so referee Henry 2 makes the the call penalty is declined so a two and out and just like you said Luke it's an eternity and Canadian ball and now the blues will get a chance here with 151 to go in the first half see if they can tack onto their lead I think the the Warriors need to get on the same page um from a pass point perspective and like you said Adam maybe go back to some Quicks U Varsity Blues are playing real deep da knows that we like to go over the top obviously he's been here for a long time Nick has that big arm and he's protecting against it which is smart and so we have to take what the defense has given us on offense interesting to see if there's a halftime adjustment there as this one's a little short but will bounce that's no yards it's going to be a no yards call Jaden Alam Smith was just a little too close to oine there that's a bit of a bad luck didn't bounce out of bounds off the bounce yeah checked right up didn't it luk can C have bound it out of bounds right there at the 40 but instead it'll be tacked on here the no yards should be the five yard variety since it was off the ground in the five yards it's a the Halo pardon me it's a 5-yard penalty so Toronto takes over at their own 47 handoff here is to Ellis and Ellis blown up in the back field and a flag comes in late that's a big flag that's a huge flag Delroy and JN with the tackle the rookie field half from shelburn made the play and then took a late [Applause] push that's 15 yards and a l 15 yards and the lost of down it was dead ball it was after the play they say so that is massive you got to think the The Varsity Blues are are probably thinking either a draw play or or simple run or or quick hitch uh they don't want to make a big mistake here yeah on second down here and 25 quarterback should take the play all the way down to to see if he does that or not W snap it a bit all the way down going to throw up the middle and it's caught and just short of the marker they're going to Mark him at Midfield a yard short that was a bold play call they went play action and ran a Crossing route impressed by it it was Chris Joseph again and now it looks like it's third and a yard they're showing a lot of confidence in that that rookie quarterback to make that play normally when it's second and long in your own territory you want to you know keep it conservative so you don't throw a pick but uh you know give it to coach uh coach Tommy and and dialing it up k oani who won the job from Scott Barnett in Camp and I think we're seeing why now we got 114 here looks like they're going for it they got their quarterback uh backup quarterback in so a sneak is on the table I'll see what they come up with here Barnett is in eight touchdowns and eight interceptions for Scott Barnett a year ago as Toronto's start hard by the end of the [Music] season third and less than a yard Barnett's going to try to go himself I think he's going to hand it off and just over the line to gain it looks like the blues have it couldn't see in the mass of bodies who the ball carrier was yeah like we talked about that's that's that's tough to stop you're giving them a yard from the defensive line perspective and and they're coming that guy's coming downhill as fast as he can and just smashing in the back so without beating your block clean that that's going to be a first down every time nios is the carrier who converts the first down so second and 25 and we were thinking the Warriors get the ball back now they've got to put their backs up again here quick throw and it's through the hands of o scene and just in behind Isaiah blackon the boundary cornerback yeah those tip balls has opportunity to to get an interception but we just weren't in the right place there but another pretty good throw again we're playing a cover four there and and they just ran a little underneath rout um yeah good throw you got to hold that in if you're the receiver second down and 10 on waterl side of Midfield at the 52 all right the Warriors got three down linemen looks like they're going to be playing uh coverage maybe trying to protect the middle of that field that's right odonahue through the middle was that a flag and it was incomplete and maybe tiptoeing away there is Jos Josh Peli yeah that was that was the right guy in the coverage uh with the rout combination they had on little bit of an inaccurate throw and uh Warriors might have got on away with that one uh you know luckily he he led with his shoulder which is what you're taught to do and he brought his his shoulder down to to the uh you know into the shoulder pads of the receiver so smart play by the defensive back and and now looks like we're getting the ball with one minute left yeah you'd have to think any other kind of version of that hit where he wraps up or uses his hands at all or lowers his shoulder pads would be a flag they're really protecting the receivers which is which is fine oh the Warriors brought the brought the pressure on that one wanted the block Haru makes one man miss now Haru ball came out who has it Blues think they have it no signal yet I think the Warriors jump on it yeah lucky it may have been Allan Clemens that jumped on the ball 48 in Black tell you what though Tron was right there that would have been a huge momentum swing so Warriors got lucky with that one and once again we got 52 seconds see if we can get the ball in field goal range here so Luke just as we were talking about in the first quarter where everything kind of went the way of the Warriors it was only a one- score game the second quarter same could be said right water has not had the second quarter to remember but they're only down two here with 52 seconds left in the first half as or will start the motion or to throw lets it develop far sideline caught timbe gain of about 14 on first down keeps the sticks moving that's a great way to go through your progression from Nick progression goes inside out as the outside route was breaking late he looked on the inside it was covered set his feet through the outside comeback that's the way you draw it up and the big difference there Luke he had time right absolutely had to pocket and he stayed in it the pressure has been an issue for the water passing game so far and or has been flushed a number of times at the waterl 45 or to throw again also has time can step up will throw it middle of the field oh and basil couldn't haul it down it was a high throw that he had in his hands but took a hit and the ball came loose yeah a little a little bit too much juice on the ball from Nick uh pretty pretty great effort from from Evan there just couldn't come down with it with the with the ground causing uh causing the incompletion so we got second down now um you know I think to your point I think Nicks had a decent amount of time he needs to step up and then maybe potentially stay in the pocket a little longer to go through his reads um you know run when you can but uh let's stay in there and deliver a strike which is your strength yeah goes back to what Bert was talking about with being decisive or or still with it now he took too long and he got wrapped up and taken down yeah we like to call that one a coverage sack we had a chance to step up that's not on the offensive line he stepped up stepped up twice we call that two hitches uh was going through his repr progression it really wasn't there they were playing a high Zone and we had a corner route concept uh great cover down by the by The Varsity Blues um really all Nick had there was the potential to run but he decided that too late so you know 35 seconds left um hopefully we can pin him deep from a warrior perspective and and get to half you're only down two would be good elini with the sack on the second down and long so cross set on to punt again it's a short punt but it's going to roll for the Warriors down to the 20 taken by Will cockfield and he's wrapped up in forc Out of Bounds at the 34 yd line maybe 35 with only seven ticks left on the clock yeah it's not what Co wanted but it worked out well as there's no blockers over there so looks like the Warriors are be able to get to half down two and and as you said Adam second quarter really hasn't gone the way that they would like it to but you know down two we're still in this game going to be interesting to see what happens at halftime here with the coach's adjustments yeah that won't be one that Cole Crosset will put on his film it's like the wedge that you hit off the hosle but it still rolls to about 10 ft that's right Odon to throw has a man it's caught Chris Joseph he's been the favorite Target so far a second to play here so the blues will have one last play yeah once again I'm impressed with the with the Young quarterback and the trust they're putting in him to make throws and you know water was playing a high Zone rightfully so and he came underneath and and now we're going to halftime won't take any chances here just hear the horn take a knee and an entertaining first half has the blues on top 1715 after an explosive second quarter halftime adjustment time we'll see what the Warriors come back out with when we're back on 8 TV in about 15 minutes oua season uh and it's really exciting to look forward we've got some time off now but we get to do it all again uh for the 2425 season I belong I belong I belong I belong I belong I belong I Bel welcome back to Warrior field on the north campus of the University of waterl after the first half the Toronto Varsity Blues lead the water the Warriors 1715 my name's Adam McGuire alongside Luke Balch on ouat TV and Luke the Warriors offense came out and moved the ball well in that first quarter and in the second quarter the blues bounced back and had the bulk of possession time and certainly the bulk of the points on the scoreboard yeah this is going to be an important drive for them to come out in the second half here what I really want to see is is some more Rhythm on offense um we feel like we're we're mixing in some deep passes some scrambles some some runs we just got to get those those first down wins as we've been talking about set set up second and short uh and really drive down the field that we saw in that first quarter we'll see what adjustments coach beroya coach Conway make from the offensive standpoint right now and and we'll see if we can come out and and drive down the field as as we should yeah it's a game of adjustments obviously in that 15 minutes in between the second and third quarter the biggest period of adjustment that you can have as a staff and as a team and schematically it's something that the Warriors are going to have to try to address because you know that they want to try to hit that first down and win that first down on the ground and that'll be a big story I would imagine here in the second half as hanky will kick it off agote at his own goal line oote still on his feet and taken down at about the 19 yd line a really good kick from Sam hanky and the Warriors will have a long field here they'll start at the 20 I expect the Warriors to come out on the ground here and see if we can get uh Anthony Miller rolling that inside Zone was working from time to time um you know we really got to get a push up to that second that second level with the linebacker so we see what uh coach dials up Miller will start in the back field baselga in that HB slot or pulls it out will throw it and it's caught Samuel slum to about the 25 a gain of five oh they're going to give him close to the 30 actually on the progress driven back so a gain of maybe eight on first down yeah it's a run pass option the whe linebacker stayed in the box which allowed us to throw to number too weak as the halfback was backpedaling that's a great first down play call Romel Samuel slokum hold it in it's a gain of nine it's second down and one or will pull it and roll to his right pass in the middle of the field and it's caught Romel Samuel slum again took a huge hit and was able to come down with the football Owen Cassie laid a lick on him and is down but now up sitting up and that's always a good sign when a collision like that happens yeah you know what Adam that's a that's a great play by by all around Nick was looking short side they brought the the will pressure and they brought a few linebackers really wouldn't have stuff the run so he pulled he rolled to the field I saw the receiver you know you obviously don't don't don't love throwing those uh those nakeds if if they're in zone but what a catch by the receiver move the chains two grabs right off the bat from roml Samuel slokum here the fourthe vet out of Brampton Owen Cassie the veteran safety is up maybe a bit of a stinger there just shaking out the right hand it looks like the Varsity Blues are run blitzing on that first down and second and short so again a couple good play calls out the gate and we're rolling down the field here so two big receptions from romal Samuel slokum have the Warriors moving in this first drive of the second half or is going to pull it again will throw and connect there to Tyler Tierney Tierney has an angle to the outside and Tierney turns the burners on and got a bit of a corner there added about five or six to that reception and the chains move again the Warriors are over Midfield looks like we're going hurry up offense you know we talked about halftime adjustments and that's what it was looks like we're getting uh that field side cornerback playing too soft and we're running rpos and throwing it right right down the middle there and keeping things moving throw now is complete to Hogle Marcus Hogle hauls it in that's a nice timing route Nick threw it on time as we continue in the hurry up offense and I I love the change of pace looks like we're huddling now you know what I bet I bet the The Varsity Blues coaching staff thought the same thing we did and the coach is going to come out try to establish the run that run game hasn't working and uh you know we went against that and you know what I love it now running some options that have been in the air and then some designed throws as well second down and a short one or is going to throw again and this time he's flushed or across his body and it's caught they're going to call it incomplete oh I think they got it oh no they did yeah the the officials will talk right now little toe tap little toe [Applause] tap once again another RPO so Nick has an opportunity to give that he pulled it wasn't quite there so we rolled made a nice play coach da is trying to get into the ref here to change the call here we'll see what happens yeah so the backside official I think waved it off and it it looked good from here it did it did indeed look good from here and we have maybe not the best angle on a lot of plays but that one was right in front of us Luke exctly certainly looked like the feet dragged for Brett timbe to make the catch they're going to call it incomplete all right we got to challenge it coach can can we do that yet Ina if only that one looked so I think that brings us to uh third and short here it's going to be third and very short so we'll see a big package come in in yeah the last two third and shorts uh we've went off tackle with Anthony Miller one was a broken play where where Nick was able to to scramble for a huge play we don't want to see that again though uh we'll see what they come down with Miller in the back field or under Center here on Third and short hand off to Miller Miller spins can he get there I don't think he did I think it's a turn turn over on Downs yeah turn over on Downs it is indeed you know I don't like the idea of Nick uh sorry of Anthony bouncing that out you got to you got to put your head down and go right into the line over the BC Gap uh tried to make something big out of it it just wasn't there so unfortunate play for the Warriors as they were they were rolling there in that first drive so it becomes a huge turn of events that call that went against the Warriors where it looked like Brett timbe had the sideline and had the reception goes against the Warriors they couldn't convert on third down and back on the offense are the blues odonahue odonahue flushed odonahue nowhere to go Dodges a tackle odonahue now just has to get rid of it and he's hit hard by Bowen and the flag will [Applause] come looks like they're going to call leading with the helmet a little bit you know again a controversy call but you trying to keep these players safe yeah now here's the other question did the throw get back to the lant of scrimmage the flag on the ground definitely is against Bowen but was was the throw any was the throw in the vicinity and back to the line of scrimmage Henry chw will tell us looks like it's a 15 y 15 yards on water loop yeah that's two calls out to gate in the second half that's a bit unfortunate if you're a Warriors fan you know that play could have gone either way it was it was a a pretty clean strong hit but you got to protect these players and he did leave a little bit with the crown of the head yeah it's a different situation just with the crown of the head right if it's a heavy hit like that it's very much within the rule book if it's not the crown of the helmet as that first down carry from Jack nairos goes for about five I like to see the pressure from the D line that that we're getting which is nice again on that fortunate uh call that that didn't go with them here so yeah we'll see what they come out with in second and short yeah it's a gain of actually six and a half maybe on first down as not naos fell [Music] forward second and a long three or a short four thr throw is too high for osine and that's the kind of Concepts we've seen them connect on All Night Luke but that one just a a little too high out of the hand of Caleb odonahue yeah that's a similar play that we run in that uh the Warriors run Story on that RPO you're reading that weak side linebacker if he steps up when the ball goes into the running back you're really going to throw it over his head it's a tight window and and odonahue just missed I think it was the right read though you know we we talked about the familiarity with the coaching staffs with Tommy kesas and and Jamie Cook coming over to waterl and we do have have seen a lot of similar Concepts to what we run or or used to run here at waterl yeah an interesting chess match here for week one Haru at his own 10 takes it and we'll just have to Scamper out of bounds as Toronto converted a couple of first made the third down stop and then converted a first down and got the penalty to flip the field here on the Warriors a bit now we'll see if Nick can continue uh that hot start he had coming out of the out of halftime with those those reading reading the linebackers and they're playing that soft coverage like we talked about they're really trying to take take away that vertical shot coach da knows that's what we like to do on this offense and in their playing High Zone and and uh you know I really like what we're seeing thrown it underneath right now yeah between the underneath throws and I think get the Run game going this time with Springer it would do wonders to kind of open up the top of the offense maybe a little pitch here missed timed but tyy is going to be swallowed up and taken down Jeremy Sinclair on the tackle that's a great play by their uh their rush and staying hold you know thought they thought we he was going to pinch down so we can get outside the edge but it didn't happen and now we're in second and long yeah second and maybe 14 no Luke in your opinion is that a is that a mistime or is that a deception thing there to try to delay for a little bit of both um you know it was really at the end of the day just number 44 U staying home and playing playing well or to throw has Basel but it's not going to be enough for a first down maybe just back to the original line of scrimmage or Beyond so another two and out for the Warriors yeah Tonto brought a six-man pressure with a with a loop so they ran a little stunt on the inside and was able to get into Nick's face they were running man behind it so the crossing route is a nice play but you know great coverage chasing Evan down across the field there and we'll see what the coach decides to do if he's going to kick this away or take another two you know last time we had this exact field position we decided to kick it away and unfortunately gave up a field goal so we were a minus one on that decision and uh we'll see if Cole can get one off if he does kick it away yeah there's not a breeze of wind it looks like the flags over by the scoreboard and then the top of the uprights completely still and Limp so just a perfect day for football perfect day yeah it absolutely is I'm sure right now Cole cross set would be fine with a bit of a west to east Breeze behind him but it'll be a decision for the Warriors to make Crosset did have one of the higher punting averages a year ago and of course all Canadian in 22 we got a dangerous Return Man as well so if he does kick this away we're really going to want to pin it either out of bounds or close to so we can get our cover unit down there yeah oine is back for the kick the Varsity Blue that was slow to get up I think it was yeah Ryan Collins 19 the will linebacker they are going to kick it away there's a kick and another big giant kick osine inside his own 40 he'll cut it up oos on his feet still still on his feet still going as oine and it was a great kick but uh equally fascinating return from Jak oine that got it back across Midfield to the waterl 49 yd line yeah we talked about that before with the Varsity Blues out kicking their coverage on kickoff you know Cole got a hold of that one and it was pretty far that gives uh you know Jake an opportunity to to read the guys coming down and make a break he he tried to go to the field side we did contain it but he cut up field with a nice return so Caleb odonahue in the Toronto offense nairos is the back he'll have the handoff nairos to bounce it to the outside gets a corner and is tracked down there by kesan Bowen but not before a first down for Toronto yeah they got they got big number nine cam coming in at the fullback position he really sealed really well there able to give the running back an opportunity to bounce it out they're still they're staying with that 22 look with the full back in and then tail back and uh and pounding the rock up the middle so see if the waterl Warriors can make an adjustment first down and 10 at the 38 yd line of the Warriors Odon hu hands it off again and again it's Jack nyros yeah coach kmak decided to bring a run blitz there so he brought everybody to the line on a six-man pressure but they ran the Zone scheme and and and sliced it up the Middle with a great cut back and they're rolling now you got to you got to know Tommy's Tommy loves it a former o line coach and a former linean himself so you know he's going to keep dialing those up coach Tommy kiches has to be pleased with he's seen from his rookie quarterback today another handoff nairos this time chopped down after a modest gain of about three after back-to-back first down runs and we brought a fieldside half pressure there um you know trying to force the the running back back into the middle and let our big boys clean it up and that's just what we did so great play by the defense let's see if we can stand up on here on second and long warri has been playing a lot of high Zone hopefully they can get a little tighter on that so the windows aren't as big for for the rookie to to hopefully make a mistake down the road here so job one eight yards make sure that they don't gain the first down odonahue that's a hold no flag comes out after Miller was held the pass is complete and head coach Chris per Toya is apoplectic you can't blame him you could see it from here the 52 of Miller's Jersey Twisted in the palm of a Varsity Blue but it's complete for a first down Nathan Bullock made the catch and that's just a Miss I think from the officials yeah Varsity Blues ran a ran a receiver into the flats and and Caleb tried to hit it right away and it was covered down nicely as a left t a quarterback you're going to want want to roll left to make it easier and when he did our uh her DN really had contained there but a little bit of a tug on the Jersey you know from a homer perspective you want to see that called as the as the ref we're looking right at it so that's a tough one to swallow there slow to get up is Justin gek the local product the defensive tackle out of waterl I'm guessing Chris ptor said some pleases and thank yous there to the ref and you know politely asked them to try to have a better call next time maybe C and collected as always right exactly he was all right all the way out to halfway to the hash in fact it looked like meanwhile Toronto knocking on the door again and in the back field shedding one tackle there and nairos can't get himself going now there's a flag in the endzone and a blue without a helmet you wonder if that's against blackon on the coverage I think it might be they got a little little tussle up there from uh the receiver trying to stock block the um the corner we got to stay disciplined from a warrior defensive perspective we come up with a big stop and a big play and and make a foolish mistake like that [Music] [Applause] Warriors been taking some tough penalties here to start the second half uh you know when you're evenly matched teams as these two teams are uh you really can't do that it's not going to work out well for you as as we see the ball's all the way down to the one yard line now and you got to think a quarterback sneak or a quick dive has coming up yeah it is Scott Barnett in the game quarterback to try to give Toronto a two-score lead there he goes in the sneak Barnett Barnett did he get the push he got in touchdown touchdown Toronto Scott Barnett from a yard out and the blues have added to their lead here flag comes in at the end and we'll have to see who that's against if this is against waterl coach ptor might have to rally the troops here and and get him to calm down a little bit they're talking to the The Varsity Blues Captain so that usually means it's uh against the Warriors yeah and if it is against waterl now you're bringing the option of a single in the kickoff oh it is against tunnel yeah so there was a penalty against both teams during the play water was offside of course Toronto declines it but then the unnecessary roughness after the fact on Toronto that was on Sebastian holding the center so Toronto will kick the extra point here but then the looks like it'll be assessed on the kickoff it'll be assessed on the kickoff so the positive of this is the field position right for waterl they should get decent field position Hank's got a big leg but Warriors you would think should get a decent starting position to try to respond here Toronto up eight trying to make it nine here on the extra point and of course Luke the flip side of that is against if the penalties against waterl assessed on the kick off now you're looking at trying to protect against the single on the kickoff that adds another point to The Ledger so Warriors fortunate they don't have to worry about that they shouldn't have to I'll tell you what though I've been impressed with Caleb oonu at quarterback here this is his first game as an oua starter didn't even dress last year um you know he's making plays he's making good decisions he's using his athleticism when he needs to uh obviously had a strong Run game is really helping and giving him some confidence there but the Warriors might have to do something different to to mix that up on the flip side you know we got Nick coming out here uh he started started the second half hot and uh we'll see if we can keep it rolling this is this is a big Drive we're down nine obviously there's there's there's tons of time left but we really want to set the tone here and show that we can move back down and uh and put some points on the board from Warriors perspective so we're in a battle it's what we expected to see and uh it's a great football game so a kickoff from the 35 after the penalty assess on this [Music] kickoff henot and Haru both back for it it's going to be henot goote wrapped up and taken down still at the 20 so really good coverage by Toronto and the Warriors didn't get the field position Advantage we thought they would get maybe all right let's see if coach Conway and the offense here stays with that RPO look run pass option and Tonto continues to play a little bit soft and allow for those those hitches from the inside Miller in the back Field behind Nick or 6 minutes and 35 seconds in counting now to play in the third quarter hand off is to Miller and Miller gets downhill on a good first down run maybe five or six yeah that's just an inside Zone you know what Adam I like the play called The Old Line get a chance to just just run their feet and try to get up to that second level um putting in us in a in a decent second and down situation here where we can open up the Playbook you know six-yard hitches still get a first down so we'll see what they come up with going to call it second and five after the 5yd carry from Miller Warrior field has fallen a little quiet here in the third quarter because of the play of the Varsity Blues up 2415 or to throw or had it knocked down at the line of scrimmage Jeremy Sinclair got his hands up and on second and five it's knocked down and the Warriors another fruitless drive here yeah I like the play call we had had the receiver open that we wanted to um just got some pressure in your face and as a quarterback you know nothing really you can do about that you got to get rid of the ball so you don't get sacked and uh you know give credit what credits do that's a great play by the D line so much of this third quarter it feels Luke has been played to our right Co Crosset would love another big kick that's covered well to try to flip this a little bit Yeah ball's in the middle of the field so it's harder to get to the short side here with with the kick so we'll see what Cole decides to do got it away it's going to take a roll and it rolls past osine got to keep contained here oos all the way down to the 20 osin breaks one tackle but not the second one and a good kick and roll there puts the blues starting position inside their own 30 yeah we got to see what uh what what k m comes out with as a defensive coordinator for the Warriors see if he's going to continue with those run blitzes uh you really got to stop that first down push that they're getting you know know Tommy kesas is really trying to establish that run game and doing well with it and putting his quarterback in in a good place to be successful yeah the game plan has been on point for Toronto that's for sure odonahue bit of a low snap has to scramble ball was on the ground and he'll just go down with the pressure coming yeah they went they went empty there actually and uh you know they had a had a guy out to the flats here but bad snap really put that uh that play to bed and and Kean Bulman came flying in as he always does so now we're in second and long and you know last second and long we thought they were just going to do a quick handoff and they went over the middle so we don't know what they're going to dial up here yeah let's see what the blues want to call here on second and 13 a loss of three on the bad snap and the kishan bow and pressure odonahue sends the waggle odonahue pressure comes again odonahue not swallowed up just yet but turns another sack into a gain of about three not enough though to get anywhere near a first down yeah last uh last second and long we we went a deep cover four and and they found the Zone in this one kmx switched it up brought the blitz played man got a nice the DB's got a nice jams on the receivers and and let the quarterback hold on to the ball and and came up with the sack so that's a great play from a a defensive uh call perspective and execution Inky with the punt it's a bit of a short one ball bounces back Haru will take it there's a flag on the field so Haru picked it up was it a no yards it looks like it's a 5 yard variety I believe yeah ball in the ground and all right we got some good field position we're on uh Varsity Blue side of half really got to get get a couple first downs here to to to flip the field and put some points on the board so from the spot of where the foul occurred it takes it down to the Toronto 49 where waterl will start so short field here for the Warriors with 3 minutes and 40 seconds to go in this third quarter you'd have to think the Warriors feel like this is a a must score Drive based on the starting position or had a screen set up but he couldn't get it to Miller yeah the blues went went manto man there which is tough to run a screen against because uh you know one of the linebackers responsibility is the tailb so we can fight through that old linean real quick you want a zone so everybody's backing up deep and then and the old line can get in front of the running back and they can uh they can take it off so a good play call from uh from The Varsity Blues there we were expecting Zone got man and now we're in second and long second and along once again for or and the waterl offense Samuel slokum in motion or will throw has Brett timbe can he get to a first down marker he cannot he is swarmed up and taken down by two Varsity Blues that was a great read by Nick that's that's the guy you got to get the ball to and we're hoping he can make a break a tackle and get the first down which he didn't but you know third manageable here and you know we know coach birdie likes to go for these and hopefully we can uh you know get a bit of a a better play call here from the last one yeah third and two right in around the area of the field where the Warriors failed on their third and inches early in the third quarter where they had the ball moving on the first possession of the half yeah we were underneath last time now we're in gun so let's see if we come up with something else yeah a little longer than that last one for sure hand off is to Miller Miller hits the hole does he reach for the first down marker I don't know if he got it I think it's another turnover on Downs here it might be a might be a measurement they will measure it this is a this is a big call oh first down go first down you know what I like what Anthony Miller did on that time which he didn't do the last one he put his head down he went right up the middle you know get a low pad level that's what you talk as from a running back coach perspective is is lower your pads and just and turn your feet um he didn't try to bounce he didn't try to get cute and uh paid it off first down running backs coach Jesse candella likely happy to see that one absolutely so first down and 10 for the Warriors handoff is to Miller Miller corner on the outside and maybe another uncalled hold there this time though benefiting the warriors on the outside looks like the Warriors stayed in their heavy Personnel from that third and short so they had six old linemen in one of the old linemen acting as a fullback and they went to that outside Zone uh you know I think it was a good no call The Warriors hands were old lineman's hands were inside and let go at the at the right time so a pretty good run now we got the that second and short where we want to be yeah it's a short six Maybe on second down as the sun continues to set here at Warrior field or to throw Blitz picked up or goes over the top has tyy oh he dropped it you know what that is a big leag throw you know what they played manto man defense the safety came down that's the guy to throw it to that's the play Perfect air under the ball unfortunately Tyler just couldn't bring it down there's a flag on the play it was uh llan scardina on the coverage by the way and he may have gotten a fingertip on it let's see who the flag is against I really like what Nick did there he stepped up in the pocket he read the defense and and that's the ball you want I think it might have been a late hit roughing the passer yeah roughing the passer on Toronto so a reprieve for the Warriors as they just about hit the Deep shot they've been looking for all night yeah Nick let go with that one he took a good he took a good lick so uh he's a big boy he'll get up but um you know unfortunate result with the with the drop ball but uh first down Warriors yeah and again it's hard to see from here but scardina put the hand up at the last minute might have got a fingertip on it right no it definitely blurred the vision and that's tough for distraction Dr from a receiver for sure yeah tyy has a hand right in his face in the line of sight of the ball but it is a first down on the penalty oh double move got him or waits he's got a man in the end zone did he get the feet in did he get in touchdown Warriors Brett timbe tiptoes the sidelines on a gorgeous pitch and catch as the Warriors put the major on the board yeah that was a great play call that's called a double move we've been running those weak side hitches all the second half that six-yard hitch route he gave a six-yard stuttered Nick gave a little shoulder pump went up top right time for that call right throw and he got the feet in I thought throw him it might have been a little long but uh you know it's a great play all around for the Warriors right Tim back may have been called out of bounds on his reception on this near sideline but on the far sideline In The End Zone not this time got the feet down and it's a touchdown for waterl extra point here to come and it's up and through so back to within two of The Warriors here with under a minute to play in the third quarter that was a great Drive by The W Warriors offense mixed mixed in a bit of everything some short routes took a deep shot got the ground game going obviously the penalty really helped and uh you know like I talked about coming out I wanted to see more flow I I am sing a little bit more flow from from coach Conway and Nick he's standing in the pocket a little bit better too and taking some licks and delivering the ball I think the first half he got outside a little bit too antsy a little bit too quick and I'm sure uh Matt Fraser from Old Line perspective and Coach Conway uh talked to him about that and he's been settling in so um you know got a great game here two-point game going into the fourth quarter let's see what the Warriors defense can come out with uh and uh as we get the ball here yeah it's absolutely exactly what you said right it's trying to mix things up for the Warriors offense and trying to look for the spot for that over the top play right they almost had it in the play before and they kind of went up high into the deep ends of the End Zone on the touchdown to timbe and just a little more flow and Rhythm to the offense maybe for waterl that was the that was the most man-to-man defense I've seen the War uh Varsity booze play in a long time so I wonder if coach is going to go back to his Zone next drive and we'll see cross set to kick off kinale philli on the return and Phillip pulled down at around the 34 yd line kinel Phillip as we mentioned the boundary halfback and returning kicks the last time the blues were here at Warrior field on October 1st of 2022 he was the starting quarterback he went 10 for 16 with 104 yards six carries for 38 yards on the ground as the blues beat waterl back in 2022 all right we'll see if uh if coach uh Coach K MD's up some more pressure on this drive while we sit back in in some Zone odonahue will hand it off Ellis taken down there with a gain of about three and a half or four great play by Justin gag they ran that inside Zone once again and gek actually shed his block real fast and and came off on the running back normally as a d linan you're going to hold up your old lineman and let the linebackers flow but he he did a nice shed and and came off of it to uh you know hold him to three the dline of course not only missing Tyson hergot now with the Toronto Argonauts but Travon Hallstead that's right Kaden jel also graduating so some fresh faces on the defensive front last play of the quarter it's a slant and caught by Thomas Roberts latm more tried to break on it as did blackon but getting the inside position was Roberts and it's a first down for Toronto at the end of quarter number three so we'll be back with the fourth after this the blues and the Warriors in a good one it's 2422 we'll be back in 90 seconds [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome back to Warrior field on the north campus of the University of watero getting set for the fourth quarter Toronto 24 water 22 Adam Maguire and Luke Balch with you as the blues have a first down here on their own side of Midfield at the 47 yd line odonahue will throw it's caught again by Joseph and Joseph the ball came oh he dropped it [Applause] that's a great read again by by Caleb we're playing a high Zone and and a strong cut so our our halfbacks back pedaling you know Way backwards he almost have 20 yards and so they're running a quick hitch route because the S linebacker can't get out there uh that's an easy pitch and catch unfortunately for the blues uh you he dropped the ball so now we're in second and second and 10 so maybe a break for the Warriors here after scoring their major second and 10 odonahue [Applause] Ola tries to track him down odonahue pitch and catch to Jake oine for a first down odonahue bought time with his legs and then found Jake o open at the waterl 40 yeah we got to keep contained on this quarterback especially rolling left you know that's what he wants to do that's where bread and butter is going to be once he rolls left and Brace contain it's almost impossible for the DBS to hold up in coverage there a lot of options uh nice uh nice athletic play full marks regardless of the outcome now to Caleb odonahue absolutely hand off is to nyrose and naos is pulled down after a gain of maybe six James hinsberger in on the tackle there we got second and four coming up you know wondering if uh if coach km's going to want to bring pressure if so you think the Varsity Blues are going to look to do those Crossing routes that they did before and we successful with if he does play deep in in a more of his own shell look uh they're going to throw those hitch routes underneath so um you know two-way goal they haven't been running much on on this second in five four or five so expect the The Varsity Blues to to pass this one meanwhile a warrior down it's Marcus Ola the defensive tackle out of Brockville it's a good chance for the uh the Warriors defense to catch the breath a little bit they've been playing catch up like I said we want to focus on on keeping contained from the from from from the DM perspective like to see him walk off on his Zone tuition there so that's good uh yeah big second down here cuz they're not quite in field goal range maybe On The Fringe of field goal range so a big stop would would go a long way yeah this is a huge second down play with just 13 minutes and change to go in this one and waterl down two Odon hu bad snap bad snap got him in on the tackle Marcus Miller's been around the quarterback all night and has hasn't got his hands on him that time with some help from a high snap Miller with a big sack on second down and four that's interesting the last time they went empty in motion the tail back it was another bad snap uh which probably don't have anything to do with each other but uh yeah they were looking to go empty I think they might have been running a quarterback counter there to the weak side um but obviously a great play for the Warriors so bring up the punt unit as we said it's a big stop and see if they can uh get a little bit of return here to set the the offense up for a drive so heru is back in the shadow of his own goal posts hanky will kick it away pressure came and it was just about blocked good punt though right to the end zone Haru has to make one move and now doesn't get any further than about the 5 yd line oh they're going to say he brought it out of the end zone so that'll come to the 20 I think yeah going one yard deep actually was uh that was perect for water absolutely that's a 15 y for those who don't know there's a rule in the in Canadian football where if you catch it in the end zone and bring it out regardless of where you get tackled the ball comes out to the 20 a lot of little unique rules in in Canadian football and this is definitely one of them yeah absolutely and it's one that benefits waterl right now coach coach DA's coach da is questioning it right now he thought he thought he caught it on the one he's not happy about that yeah coach da he's certainly not questioning the rule he's questioning the where where Haru caught the [Music] ball or to throw again flushed again or he's going to get hit and taken down a big giant sack for the blues a response there and I think it was Josh Carter maybe yeah that was uh that was actually a true play action and not an RPO they had Tyler tyrany wrapping the Sam line linebacker Nick's got to step up there and trust it and rip that ball it's a small window but it is there and I know he can make that throw you know I I bet coach Conway will talk to that him about that tomorrow in the film room so second and 15 now for waterl or pressure comes through the ball got it out Hogle with the reception Hogle breaks one tackle and then taken down at the 2 two yd line got about half of it back that they needed but it'll be a two and out for water loop that's just smart defense you know play a high shell look make him throw it underneath that's that's the read That's the play for for Nick that's the guy who was open unfortunately the the yyard just weren't there you know this receiving Court they have a lot of good hands they can run some good routes but uh you know we haven't seen much Yak today where they can catch the ball make a few guys miss and get up field uh so that puts a lot of pressure on on running routes to the depth of the first down unfortunately we you know we didn't get that there all comes down to that first down play though we got to get first down wins in order to move the ball down the field punt is away from Crosset taken on the run there by Will cockfield and he's right around the Midfield and just passed by about three yards to the waterl 52 yeah that's an underrated play by a cockfield there catching the ball in the air if he lets that bounce it potentially goes past him or or the the cover team gets down there a little quicker so you know nice play by the returner as as he was put in there for the first time this uh this game yeah to get up on that we've seen oen doing most of the punt returning for Toronto all right we're coming to crunch time here fourth quarter clock's ticking down Warriors down by two far City Blues the ball to Midfield time's ticking away less than 12 to play handoff inside is toyos and about three on first down it's a great play by The Warriors defense they brought another run blitz what would be my run blitz is is you're coming up and and as a linebacker and you're stepping in towards the uh the o line but you're not trying to get past him to get a sack you're just filling a gap and they're doing a good job at filling those gaps and that's what you want to do against a Zone run scheme which is what the Varsity Blues have been running so nice run blitz and and now we're in second and long second down and seven odonahue pressure comes balls on the ground has it that's warri ball waterl has the football waiting for the official signal the Warriors say they have it waterl brings a halfback Blitz and he gets home what a great call by coach kmak it is water lose football a big turnover at Midfield the sack strip on the blitz hard to tell who got the first hand on the football and hard to tell who ended up landing on it but the Warriors have the ball and snuff out the Toronto drive I love that play call I mean when you bring that many guys especially a halfback Blitz like that it's a high risk High reward if it gets blocked up there's a potential guy going deep or crossing the field open but if it gets home you can make a big play like they did here now the fans are back into it Adam like you were saying crowd starting to ignite here a little bit just got word it's an attendance of 1184 tonight at a beautiful night 11,000 it does it absolutely does and 1184 in August before students are even back on campus and on a hot day of a summer weekend and this atmosphere right this is part of the reason that Warrior Fields such an awesome place to play you know when I was a student here we still called seum Stadium at the time home that's right that's where I played some games yeah and it's a tight confines an 11 84 can make a ton of noise they're going to try to buoy their Warriors here as or pulls it out but now he can't get through a flag comes down though helmet's on the ground and Nick or is back to his feet so it's a sack momentarily for the blues but I think it's holding yeah it'll be a hold against they probably decline this yeah it'll be a hold against the Warriors you know that that defensive call was a little uh da wrinkle I believe they they showed strong Cuts so they showed the the field side half was way deep uh at the snap of the ball he came screaming up and the Sam linebacker screamed up deep and Nick took his eyes off the coverage and and when he brought them back up I I think he didn't he was surprised what he saw which made him hold the ball a little bit too long so now we got second and 10 and we'll see what they can come up with here looks like they're coming out in a in a 23 formation with two men to the field side here da does like to play fast and up field got to the quarterback there this time though it's out quickly and basil liga's got a first down great play or to Evan baselga and that's a gain of 12 on second and 10 yeah what they did there as they took a receiver from the short side motion him to the strong side which made the coverage rotate over which caused that hole in the defense to that short side where the guy came from that's a good design by coach Conway into Toronto territory on the four 36 or little mix up there bit of a broken play and or just tries to get back to the line of scrimmage he gets maybe a yard I felt like they thought a whistle went people stopped playing they continue playing I we don't know what happened there yeah it was some confusion there but it is second down after a gain of about a yard that's tough tough tough getting miscommunication in this uh this time of the game in this this field position now we got second and nine to deal with let's see if Nick can stay in the pocket a little bit we get a little bit uh more time for him if the Varsity Blues especially if they only Rush four and they they drop everyone else under [Music] coverage or a throw or down the field as a man but it's too far for tyranny incomplete tyy was was back there but it was just over his head and now Luke is there a decision with the big leg of Cole cross Set uh yeah I think we got to punt this away being a two two-core game you don't want to set them up in field goal position but looks like they are trying to field goal and so when you uh when you have a field goal this long you you bring out what's called the speed team so you bring some linebackers out instead of uh instead of O lineman so if they do miss you got to be aware of the of the return uh this will be a big one for Cole I know uh I know he can make it uh but high risk High reward once again 52 y this would be his career long it's 49 kick is up kick is pulled got a cover got to cover and out of the end zone is cockfields to the 20 and in behind the play a flag comes Crosset was tangled up with that's against the Warriors man I think that'll be against Cole Crosset tangled up with Keenan Dell maybe and Dell's helmet went flying yeah cross set's pleading his case so you know I don't mind that decision of trying that field goal if you can have a good cover team like we did that's almost as good as a punt um we you know without the penalty we did uh you know get them inside the 20 so that's okay you give him a shot at that 52 y I knew he wanted it now we'll see where the Varsity Blues end up starting here yeah just didn't look like he caught it right off his foot it was a it was a pull looks like he was angry he missed too and P the face mask off one of the Varsity Blues you know sometimes when you kick in those long field goals you you it's similar to a golf swing where you try to kick it too hard and doesn't come off nice uh you got to keep that same momentum going with your leg again similar as when you get the big dog driver out and you try to pound it down the Fairway he always heads it into the heads into the woods so that I'm familiar with I'm sure a lot of people know we're coming from here all right here we go warriors on defense uh this is a huge drive here as as clock ticking down Warriors still only down two big time Drive still 823 left which is an eternity obviously in the Canadian clock rules boom right there handoff is broken up right away after that's the leader on the defense here James he blitzed that Gap uh the center didn't get a chance to get over to him on the inside Zone you know what might want to see here soon Adam is the quarterback might think about pulling one of these inside zones um you know so we got to be aware of that and really stay home if we're uh we're playing D line so we got second and long look second yeah and 12 I think we got three D lineman coming out so looks like we're going to drop into coverage unless uh coach brings another Blitz into a 30 front here in the second and long after hinsberger just about met the ball in NY Rose's belly odonahue to throw odonahue dropped big hit up the middle and again it's James hinsberger yeah back to back plays a huge hit from the defensive leader the middle linebacker after a big time stop in the back field so a two and out engineered almost entirely by 36 in black and gold you know what I'd love to see there on that cover four which which they've been hitting up with this before is in front of the DBS behind the linebackers and what James is doing is he getting he's getting lots of depth and I'm sure that's what the coaches were telling him at halftime is we got to get more depth when we're in those big zones as they're throwing behind you when he did just that there and he broke it up you know great play by him and uh coaching staff for making that adjustment punt is away it's a nice one good kick heru at the 31 Haru tried to bounce it up but gets his way over to about the 46 yd line they'll mark it at the 47 I'm curious to see here Adam if uh if coach Conway wants to try to get the Run game going a little bit we've we've gotten away from it successfully I might add but um you know now might be a time to see if we can do some some ground and pound and and move the ball down the field as the boys are getting tired that D lineman starting to to breathe heavy and see if we can push him down yeah we don't have the live stats tonight but I'm sure time of possession tilted in favor of the Blues it feels that way anyway Springer in the back field now for waterl or to throw again or got it away Evan B dropped it oh he looked up field before he had the football and basala dropped it that that's a great read by Nick he went through his read progression he wanted to go up top to the corner it was covered he came down to number two linebacker stepped up he threw over top of them on time that's a great uh quarterback play you know what I appreciate that he went up to Evan there and he gave him a high five he said don't worry about it get back in that's a great leadership role and now we're in second and long unfortunately but uh you know great play by Nick and we just got to hold that in next time Springer again in the back field under seven to play now second and 10 for waterl or or is going to sneak it himself he's going to try to get there he's way across the line of scrimmage the flag is down you got to you got to know that it's caught there by Hogle but or was a good four yards beyond the line of scrimmage I believe that's uh that's down over yeah I think so repeat second down so at least the completion forced exactly the blues to take the penalty instead of decline it but it is going to be second and a mile now yeah we'll see if we can get something in the middle here as you know Varsity Blues are going to be playing deep looking for that vertical shot I'd like to see a dig route from the outside maybe if we can get over top of the linebackers that would be that would be good yeah we've seen Toronto convert on second and long before tonight throwing it short of the sticks can water do the same or to throw got him deep and it's just too far for Evan baselga had him there but instead the Warriors will have to punt it away now with 602 to go still down two looks like they tried a a Crossing route from out of quads from Number Four Strong coming across the field that's a that's a real tight window especially on second and 20 even if he caught it he might have been short of the sticks will cockfield again back for the blues at his own 15 can Crosset get into another one there it is he does high spiraling kick at the 20 taken by cockfield good contain and really good contain Roy vanderin on the tackle I think for the Warriors and a long field here for Toronto to try to pad their lead still only up two you know this this game has uh some big implications in the oua you know both of these teams are know potential Fringe playoff teams and obviously they both want to make the playoffs and so a win here is going to go a big way to to start the season headed in that direction yeah there figures to be a log Jam between spots four and maybe as low as nine or 10 that's right underneath throw underneath is caught there by Joseph once again but a modest gain thanks to the tackle of kesan Bowen that's a play call you normally make if you're expecting man again that that receiver Crossing you want guys chasing and not sitting in zone uh still an accurate pass and but uh you know great job by the Warriors stay in discipline in their Zone drops and and now it's uh Second and in medium here so see if the Warriors can get some pressure on the quarterback yeah it looks like a gain of maybe three and a half or four on that first down pitch and catch and the waterl Warriors Force another punt here odonahue will throw he has a man open AI makes the catch and moves the sticks Anthony aopi 19 receptions uh a year ago that was a that was a that was a dime throw by uh by oonu there Warriors brought a will pressure and they picked it up really real well well five on five uh blocking up front and and uh he found the hole in his own to the field side there once again I'm sing these guys Praises he's playing really well as a first year uh a first time starter absolutely all kinds of poise for odonahue here there's a handoff that's to Garett Garrett Ellis and Ellis Dives ahead for about three and a half or four worries doing a pretty good job making sure Ellis doesn't break another big one they're filling their gaps well with the dline and linebackers coming inside I believe uh Odon did have a chance to pull that and throw it in the flats but decided to give it up and uh and now we're in second and six so another second and medium that the Warriors would love a stop on time becoming a factor now 342 in counting quick shot there and a tackle made but they're going to give him a spot for the first down that was a good catch there that's tight coverage and that's a good ball absolutely a good ball you got to throw those routes what's called on time meaning when receiver puts his foot in the ground the ball's out of your hands and he turns and it's right there that's what you work all offseason on great play pitch and catch I think it was Thomas Roberts who made the reception so a first down conversion this will be the last play play before the 3-minute [Music] warning handoff up the middle and gek on the tackle the gain is about three and a half or four again on first down here clock will stop now with 252 yeah we are coming down to crunch time here three minute warning Varsity Blues in field goal range are creeping up too you know if they get a field goal here then then the Warriors must March for a touchdown to win it so uh this is a a massive play on both sides of the ball Adam doesn't get bigger than this does it second down and five Toronto up two I think kak's going to bring some pressure here and and try to get to this Young quarterback the ball's at the 42 so quick math that's like a 4950 yd field goal for Toronto to try to tack on if they don't get any yards here now brought the blitz oh it was nearly knocked down and instead a corner turning the corner is Ellis all the way down inside the 20 on a bit of a swing screen to Ellis yeah that's a that's a dangerous play you ran That Swing screen we almost got a mid on it you could also tip that up and and intercept it potentially uh we save football as a game of inches and that was a one inch play looks like we got an injury timeout Adam yeah so far side of the field know who that the far side of the field I think a warrior down it looks like the you know Tommy Kisha thought the same thing they're going to bring pressure so you want to get the ball quick out of your hands we did bring a six-man there and got the ball out and so close to making that play Yeah from our angle it looked like the ball looked like there was no way the ball couldn't get tipped yeah when it left the hand of Caleb odonahue but it did find Garrett Ellis and then Ellis turned it up field for a big gain yeah so what we're going to want to see here is is 235 left you think Toronto might uh try to run some inside Zone uh try to run the clock down if if the quarterback can pay attention to the uh the time count here and he's going to want to bring it down to to one or two seconds before he snaps it um you know big time for the Warriors to hold up here because the touchdown uh would really hurt touchdown would make thing make the math very difficult why wouldn't the Warriors love another turnover like they had earlier in the quarter handoff there is pressure there is the pressure you were talking about Luke and great job by bowling coming off the edge on the wheel pressure uh when you got a guy that athletic it's it's hard to get down and block that so he came down on the on the Zone in there and uh now we're at uh yeah big biggest play of the game absolutely the biggest play of the the game we'll see when the quarterback snaps this it should be at 2 seconds play clock at seven right now he'll snap it at about five got man got man through the middle it's Joseph Joseph makes the spin move to the end zone touchdown Blues [Applause] yeah they uh we brought pressure uh they ran that Crossing route same play that they ran for a touchdown in the first half uh again the quarterback telling you he stood in there took a shot hit him on stride and the receiver did the [Music] rest Chris Joseph again on the cross and what a game the Richmond BC native has had Joseph as the blues now this is a big kick too but not too big for hanky that does make it a nine-point game once again and this is where the math like we said Luke gets hard for the Warriors with a minute and 58 seconds left and down nine yeah I mean it's still possible uh you're going to have to run some hurry up offense you're going to have to get a couple big chunk plays and uh you know it's going to have to happen real fast but you know kudos to The Varsity Blues you know they came out here it was a slow start in the first quarter weathered the storm you know coach da make sure his guys stayed calm you know I've been impressed with Tommy kish's offense you know Jamie Cook coaching up these young quarterbacks you know he stood in there he read man Red Zone and uh you know that time he got rid of it on that Crossing route and and it was a great play yeah and conversely on the defensive side of the ball the blues have really limited the Warriors in what they've wanted to do I think right specifically establishing that run game yeah they they're able to get some pressure in Nicks face with a fourman rush and when you're able to do that you can drop many as many defensive backs as you want and linebackers and it's harder to to find those windows when you're just getting pressure with four let's see what the Warriors can get up to here oot canote break one oote to the outside he's not going to have the angle but a good return out to about the 31 so waterl needs a quick strike here you would think yeah 150 you'd have to score with around 35 to 40 seconds left to uh to really have a chance so um some big plays at times you got to get lucky with uh pass interference call or a rough in the passer or something so we'll see what they do here now the Toronto fans who made the Trek up the 401 with some noise inside to Hogle Hogle catches and bounces out of bounds for a gain of eight that's okay St you know they're going to play soft coverage we got to get some uh some first down wins so at some point we got to take a shot though looks like he took a shot needs a sub yeah Hog's got to come off on for him is going to be Riley Webster the rookie out of waterl making his debut here on this near sideline or or will throw it off his back foot Samuel slom's got it and he will hop out of bounds with a minute 39 seconds left and another Warrior down can't see who that is right around Midfield that's going to be tough to get those shots as as they're really playing that High cover four look and the linebackers are dropping way back in the window so and I want to look to them to actually throw it over the middle of the field that's where the big windows are going to be uh get down right away and get back on the ball and then you can take your shot [Applause] it's Evan basila to his feet you know Evan's taking a few shots today hopefully uh you know he's just a little bit banged up in nothing serious first down for the Warriors or to throw again to the sidelines spinning up field now is I believe is that Riley is that Webster on the far side it is in fact Riley Webster's first catch that was a nice play yeah spun up field got the extra yards and still got out of bounds a simple out route Nick threw it on time you know there's a lot of positive things we're seeing here from the waterl offense it's you know hope just looks like it might be a little bit uh too little too late minute and 32 seconds left and T wants a timeout coach da was they had a player running off late so they didn't want to get a a Too Many Men penalty so smart timeout by coach yeah it's a uh it is a bit of a testament too you know we've talked a little bit about this program Luke you've been around a long time around this program and it's a bummer to lose a coach like da but that's a successful program do right their coordinators graduate into head coaching job somewhere else and even with kmac coming in head co uh uh defensive coordinator depart me Kevin mcneel that's a likely a resume that waterl isn't able to get 15 years ago right and that was a good hire it's a great hire and so you've got a coach that others in the league think highly enough to give head coaching interviews to and you've got established coaches former head coach in this league as Kevin mcneel to come in as a coordinator so it is a testament to the growth of the program and great to see for da he's had his team prepared today for sure and he's a minute and 32 seconds away from being 1 and0 as a head coach in the UA or to throw it's caught by P yeah we we got to get back we got to get on the line here Warriors hustling up here it's almost time to take a shot I think you got to go up up top to the wide side I think that might be where the uh where the coverage is susceptible or look to the wide side but now to this side and a reception made there by Brett timbe Warriors will hustle again here the clock stopped until the officials blow it in obviously Warriors want to be right ready as soon as that clock starts to wind 118 to go clock winds Warriors snap it or or he's going to go to the end zone does he have him in pass interference flag comes in intended for Tyler tyy and tyy drew the pass interference flag so now things get interesting again so yeah I said they had to score with about 40 seconds left and we're in that range right now right in that range a minute and N9 seconds this just a 15 Yer though unlike the NFL where they would spot it on the one that'll bring down the spot [Music] to inside the 10 maybe right at the 10 yeah right at the 10 the ball was spotted on the 25 so now on the 10 and if you're the Warriors you'd love to punch this in right now yeah you don't no no time to waste here let's let's throw it into the end zone and see if we can get that ball back [Music] again or to throw into the end zone slow com just out of his reach Romel Samuel slokum couldn't pull it in you know what that's a throw that Niko is going to want to have back you know he ran a corner route to the to the short side the low Corner pulled in a slant he just got to put out on his body that's unfortunate that was a great play call and that's the coverage that you want but no time came off the clock so we have uh we live to play another day here minute and 4 seconds now time ticken down looks like they're playing man again or to throw again or will step up or can he get to the end zone he cannot got to get on the ball third down third down now and goal from the five or didn't like the look that he had yeah I think he saw the Seas part there and thought he can get in um great play by the linebacker to step up and make that huge tackle this is the game obviously here on the line so's see what the Warriors can put up and a whistle water is going to call a timeout here they know this is their football game yeah it stops the clock too because we got tackled inbounds so smart timeout by coach calling that timeout tells me that if they do score they're probably going to do an onside kick if you had that timeout in the bag you might be able to kick it deep still with 55 seconds left get two stops um but looks like you know coach jman's going to have to call in that onside team if they punch it in here what I'm what I'm thinking of they're seeing I mean they do have run pass option here cuz if you do run the ball doesn't matter anymore if you if you do get tackled the clock's relevant so the run is available if they're going to drop back Varsity Blues have been playing lots of man here by the goal line so you might think that again what that means is you can hit a corner route the ball's in the middle of the field so what coach Conway is actually probably doing is bringing up his best two-point plays this is exactly territory of a two-point play right and so you have you have a corner route to the one side or the other side available if they do play man you have a slant coming in if the linebacker stay tight uh or you can do what that slip concept that we've seen earlier so we'll see what coach Styles up so Nick or has the instructions in the conversation that he had with head coach Christoper Toya and Nolan caban or's got the play 55 seconds a little confusion cuz when the ball's in the middle of the field it's hard to tell which is the wide side and the sword side or to throw or got touchdown Warriors Rell Samuel slokum pulls it down it's a big Play 50 seconds like I said and with 50 seconds left the Warriors have some hope they ran two verticals in an out route all you got to do is win your out route from number three and they trusted him to do that and Nick threw a dime great play so the point after to come here Warriors within three maybe you can make it two and yeah with 50 seconds Luke one time out yeah you you're probably going to kick that uh that onside look either you do a squib or you try to kick it high and knock it out of bounds uh coach erman's probably talking to the boys right now on the sidelines to get them prepared for it you know it's unfortunate that we went down nine could have went for two here for the tie if we if we were down eight kick is up and through so it's 3129 this is the game we expected Adam the nailbiter we knew it was coming we did it was a one- score game last October it'll be a one score game likely here tonight with 50 seconds left it's kind of right on the cusp of time though isn't it yeah they did they did their job they they went down the field they stayed patient they threw some underneath routes threw some out routes didn't have to take that vertical shot get intercepted right away so you know that's what they had to do and and now we have to see what the Special Teams units can come up with because you know down by you know all you got to do is a field goal now so you don't need another touchdown so if you get the ball here you are in business yeah and with the leg of cret we know that he's missed the long one already today but has routinely hit from long 40s all right looks like they're setting up for uh a high kick either he's going to do a bouncer or he's going to try to put it in the air in Canadian football all you got to do is knock it out of bounds so the first team to knock it out of bounds gets the ball let's see here if waterl can recover the onside kick with 50 seconds [Applause] left looks like he went High B is up in the air a good kick it's a good kick it's up in the air it's caught by the blues recovered by Brandon Tibido it was up there it went the requisite distance all right so 50 seconds left you know by my math I I think they're going to have to run the play here I don't know if they can kneel this out they got 20 and 20 is 40 oh they could probably kneel at the last one they could yeah if they unfortunately someone got hurt here which you don't want to see on the last play yeah but it looks like they probably can kneel this out oh oh we got a penalty here Adam oh there's a flag here looks like we got a re kick opportunity oh there's a flag so the Warriors are going to have another crack at [Music] this the drama [Applause] continues it was a well executed kick from coold Crosset I didn't mind it y nobody was able to climb the ladder to tip it behind their back out of bounds onto the waterl sideline da is looking for an explanation from the refs as are we all right we'll see if Coach Erman decides the same strategy here I mean you do have a squib kick option uh looks like Nolan caban on the field too which is an interesting little wrinkle is indeed I mean you can come down here to Romell you got one-onone here you got a few options ball has to travel 10 yards now see if they can make it happen another chance for the onside kick rossette has it on the te where he wants it wanted to get a little bit farther this time closer to the sidelines if possible that's another in the air again it goes 10 yards but again recovered again it's tial needed to be a little bit closer to the sidelines for him to have a chance that's a hard kick to make obviously the success rate is is very minimal in in in all leagues so definitely going to kneel this one out uh great battle great oua week one unfortunately the Warriors came up on the the wrong end of it Warriors look like they're going to come up short and on the other sideline coach da with his first win and does Toronto have have the quarterback of the future for their program and it was a can't say enough about how Caleb oon who played tonight I was very impressed looks like they are going to run a play here 48 seconds I to go for the strip handoff here and the Warriors get their hand on the ball they can't that should just about do it 42 2 seconds now yeah they'll bring the bring the clock down to 22 at the snap and I guess the only option now is H is a turnover if they do end up running in their inside Zone waterl mirac yeah timeout waterl yeah yeah I forgot about that timeout that yeah that absolutely means that they can't kneel it out right they couldn't yeah exactly so 40 seconds on the clock and the Warriors will need to come up with a miracle here a turnover a strip yeah we have no more time out so if we do stop him here uh the clock will run down to 20 seconds on the punt we'll get the ball back with about 14 13 seconds left and then we're in uh trick play Hill Mary territory so and if the first down isn't converted here that the the punt formation will see that it'll be an allout for the Warriors you would have to you you'd want to go for the block as your only real option so coming down to the end see if the Warriors can uh put a little bit of Miracle together they got the backup quarterback in maybe just a little sneak quick off can Barnett sneak it and get the new set of downs that would be enough he does that's the game ball comes out oh it's recovered by the blues my goodness the ball did come out but Toronto popped on it how fortunate for the blues that would have been an absolute Heartbreaker as that fumble came out we could have scooped and scored that there was no one home no one home holy cow I think it was Jake oen that popped on the football no it's not it was 17 not 13 I think 17 uh yeah the quarterback lost it that is I think Jake did jump on it Barnett top popped popped on it himself and that will do it 25 seconds no timeouts Odon is going to come in and they are going to run on one more handoff play here that's a bit curious of a it is indeed Warriors trying to get the strip here yeah we're getting a little chippy don't want to see that just got to walk away here yeah there's some definite frustration on the water loose sideline for sure run one more play after zero [Music] so DA's going to get his bath here Toronto has their Victory on week one the blues have come in and defeated the water Warriors 3129 and Coach darell Adams is 1 and0 as an oua head coach against his former team kudos to The Varsity Blues great way to start the season for them was a great start for Toronto the Warriors pushed to the very end couldn't get the turnover they needed couldn't get the onside kick recovery and so now the Warriors will move on and open on the road next weekend against the Western Mustangs Toronto meanwhile returns home 1 and0 to face the guol Griffins next Sunday night at 7 p.m. so once again our final from Warrior field Toronto Varsity Blues 31 the wle Warriors 29 thanks for joining us on oatv for Luke bch my name's Adam Maguire good night from Warrior field [Music] [Music]
