The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives: ep 3 - RECAP & REVIEW

welcome back to my channel my name is Payton Haw if you're new here today I'm going to be doing a recap and review of the Hulu docu series Secret Lives of Mormon wives episode three if you haven't seen episode 1 or two go back and watch those and then come back to this one if you haven't watched the show there are going to be spoilers I'm going to be talking about people and all the stuff that happens and whatnot so know that spoiler alert reason that I feel like I'm a good person to recap and review this is because I myself am an ex Mormon me and my husband both are I was married at 18 we were engaged 4 and 1/2 weeks after we met and then we were married 4 and 1/2 weeks after that so very quick typical Utah Mormon dating marriage situation so yeah I'm going to be reviewing this just talking about you know what feels truly authentic to the Mormon church and what doesn't there are tons of Mormons freaking out about all of the trailers being like this not my church this is twerking and drinking and cursing and all this stuff and this is what we believe just because some people don't follow all the rules doesn't mean they're not Mor the show is talking about they're like oh this person doesn't follow all the rules and this person doesn't do this and this person does this and they are Molly Mormon and they're not they're on the complete opposite side of the spectrum blah blah blah blah blah blah it's a very wide spectrum of where people land spiritually and how much the church means to them it's a spectrum and I believe it is very authentic to at least Utah Mormons I think there is a wide spectrum of people and how much they believe or how much they attend or how many of the rules that they're following you've got people who follow a majority of the rules and you've got people who basically don't follow any of the rules and who are probably just in it out of habit because they were born into it and stuff in between and I think that's very normal everybody is going through their own thing everybody believes their own thing all this stuff whatever that is how I feel about it all so far so to get started um the beginning of episode three Jen's husband Zach is introduced and Zach is graduating from BYU so they're having a little party for him they have the owner of thirst at this party and thirst is a really popular soda shop here in Utah it's not a popular as Swig I think Swig is probably the most popular one but th is another one and they had the owner there I guess they know him and he brought a bunch of their drinks and and stuff where you can make your own creation and Macy pops in and she's like soda is the Mormon version of coffee and she is 1,00% correct you cannot drink coffee in the Mormon Church some people do it anyway but I would say the vast majority don't and the vast majority will judge you if you're drinking coffee and you're a member of the church I honestly feel like people will judge someone less if they're drinking coffee and they're not a member of the church but if you are a member of the church and you're drinking coffee you're judge more kind of weird but yeah that's totally right like like people she said this she's like mey goes you're going to see people in line getting their soda at 8:00 a.m. like it's coffee and that's very real I personally love all the soda shop but sugar is really hard on my body and as much as I love sugar and it's hard to avoid it is much easier for me to avoid when it comes in liquid form because I will feel like absolute garbage if I drink that it just makes me feel horrible so I just get all the artificial stuff like Diet Dr Pepper is my favorite I love Diet Coke I'll have Diet Mountain Dew I will literally have Sprite Zero all the things um so I get all the sugar-free syrup okay this is not about me anyway Jen says her mom is the cleaning lady at the hospital Zach dad is is a neurosurgeon I believe she said neurosurgeon she could have said like I wonder if it was like a cardiovascular honestly I watched the show last night so I it might have been neurosurgeon but don't quote me on that but anyway she was basically explaining that her mom is like not wealthy and you know she's the cleaning lady at the hospital and then at that same Hospital her husband's dad is a surgeon so I don't really know why she said that or brought it up there wasn't really a lot of explanation it really just seemed like she was uncomfortable and slightly embarrassed by that and I kind of felt sad for her that she was feeling that way because everybody has their different you know talents things they're good at things that they like to do things that they enjoy everybody has a different way of life and expectation for what kind of Life they want to live and I don't think that there's anything wrong with having a lifestyle where you make a small amount of money and having a lifestyle where make a lot of money everybody's priorities are in different places but I'm also not in her situation so I don't know but you could kind of tell that she was a little bit uncomfortable about that Whitney and Jen are both mad about the alcohol that Jesse brought to Zach's uh graduation party everyone was hot tubbing and Jesse had like a flask and that had alcohol in it and she was drinking and Jen felt like that was really disrespectful because obviously you're not supposed to drink alcohol in the Mormon church and she knows that some of the girls dabble in alcohol on an like occasionally but she felt like it was really disrespectful this was an event for um it was like had her husband's family was there and they're all members of the church too and like Jen just felt like that was really disrespectful of Jesse I was kind of like eye rolling personally because I don't think it's that big of a deal but also my Mormon my previous Mormon brain also understands where Jen is coming from because I might have also been embarrassed if I had friends bringing alcohol to some like event where a bunch of my other Mormon family was attending I'd probably be like oh my gosh like sorry I don't know what to do or say but then my current brain was like oh my gosh it's not that big of a deal but Whitney was also annoyed about it it wasn't Whitney's event but Whitney is also you know considered one of the more like mly Mormons and she was just like oh my gosh I can't believe you would do that then it kind of switches to the girls some of the girls getting like botox and laughing gas and it's kind of a funny scene because they talk about how they equally go for the Botox and the laughing gas like they're equally fun for them to do and they so they'll get the laughing gas and they're just sitting there laughing at each other and getting their Botox and stuff and I just thought it was kind of like a funny snippet that they added to the show Macy was saying that it's her understanding that the church doesn't really have a stance on things like botox and lip injections and plastic surgery and stuff like that I've definitely heard prophets and apostles talk about those kinds of things um in one of my recent videos where I went over seven harmful teachings of the Mormon church for children I did read through a talk from Holland Elder Holland and he talked about how personally he disagreed with that kind of stuff and that we should just love our bodies the way that they are um but then he went on to talk about how we should hide our bodies because um you know it tempts men when we wear things that are too tight or too short and stuff and it's like we become horn okay so now Jen um is explaining the importance of the priesthood blessing for her baby so she's in one of those little side interviews and she's talking about how the baby blessing is so important because it is a priesthood blessing so only men in the church can have the priesthood and they bless this baby to be healthy and have good life and that they're protected by the spirit and all of this stuff yada yada personally I think it's all made up but also I'm an ex Morman not in the church anymore obviously I'm going to feel that way about things like that but yes as a member of the church priesthood blessings were very very sacred and important to me and anytime that I was sick even if that was like mentally not feeling good or emotionally I would get priesthood blessings um I remember watching my mom get prood blessings as she was dying from cancer and you know telling her that just like blessing her to have comfort like while this is happening and I think my dad gave her a blessing saying that like it was okay for her to go meaning and that was hard for me I remember hearing him say that and I was just crying anyway not to just like trauma dump on people but yeah so because of that Jen doesn't want to invite four of the girls so she doesn't want to invite Demi Leila Jesse and Taylor because she's saying that basically they're not as um devout in the church and because this is such an important event she doesn't want anything to just mess that up or not like feel the spirit and and whatnot and she's a little salty still about Jesse bringing alcohol to the graduation party and she doesn't want that kind of thing to happen at her like baby's blessing so she uninvites them she had original invited them they have video evidence of her being like oh I'd love for you to be there she gives them a date and time Jesse has it in her calendar and then Jen uninvites them after this stuff and then Jen starts to blame it on her husband and she's like she just like she doesn't feel he doesn't feel comfortable like having people there that he doesn't know and Jesse and Demi like you know cuz they're confronting her they're calling they facetimed her about it they're like hey like how come it sounds like we're not invited and she's like oh like Zach doesn't want anybody that he doesn't really know that well and just wants to keep it like intimate and all this stuff and she's like well four of the other girls are going like and their husbands like it doesn't feel fair that we can't come too like you are also the mother of the baby and should be able to invite people that you know and love and she just keeps like blaming it on Zach and even Jesse I think had a side interview where she said something like she believes Jen that it's actually Zach that is you know doing all all of this but at the same time it feels like kind of sketch because she's having these side conversations at the baby blessing with the four girls that did get invited and she's like I feel kind of bad that I didn't invite her but I'm also kind of glad because you know I didn't want the spirit to be gone because they were here I didn't want or like don't quote me but she was basically saying like it wouldn't have been as spiritual or good of a blessing and and situation if they were there like basically they would ruin it and I was like girl I remember being that Molly of a Mormon Jesse had a little side interview where she said she feels like Jen um she feels sad that Jen thinks that she's not a good enough Mormon and she's just kind of feeling insecure in that which every right to feel that way um oh and then after this Demi throws a gallon 's party and everyone's invited um all the mom talk girls and it looks like other girls are there too but they don't really get screen time cuz they're not part of mom talk they're just kind of in the background um and so she's like setting up for this gallentine and then it's go the camera switches over to um some of the girls getting ready together there's like Whitney and Demi and I think Jesse was there it was just like a couple of the girls getting ready and they're laughing about how Demi said that she's a nine out of 10 on the Mormon scale so like if 10 being you're the molest of Mormon that there is and one being like probably Taylor like the wild partier drinking cursing the immodesty the like very opposite end of the spectrum and at least at this time or or how she's perceived on camera but Demi says she's a nine out of 10 on the Mormon scale and all the girls are just like laughing about it oh yeah Demi wasn't there with them because Demi was at her house getting ready and setting up for galentine's so it was other girls it was Whitney and Macy any who um so they're just laughing that Demi said she's a n out of 10 on the Mormon scale because they're like that's insane and they while they're talking about her they say that she supposedly did some type of sensual act involving fruity cereal and none of the girls believe that it was real and supposedly Demi called her husband and put him on speaker and was like hey remember when this happened and he's like yeah and like remember this remember this and he has no idea that he's on speaker and all the girls are listening but basically it proves that whatever the Act was really did happen according to them anyway and they're not saying like what it was they're just saying that it was something involving fruity cereal um and so Whitney like made a joke she brought a gift to the galentine's party where she poured a bunch of like Fruity Pebble cereal it's like a offbrand into this bin and like put a lid on it and wrapped it and she told Demi she brought her this gift and Demi opened it and her jaw just dropped she couldn't believe that like people were talking about this and I guess she supposedly told her husband that she would never tell a soul what they had done and she told somebody in the mom talk group and they told everybody else so now everyone knew about it and she felt super bad and you know confront told her husband about it and he was like upset but they had a conversation about it and like you know they were good after that um but yeah Demi felt really bad and she was just upset that people were talking about it um I really can want to know what it was and how are Fruity Pebbles involved in the bedroom look I feel like I do a lot of stuff in that area I feel like we're very well-versed I feel I read a lot of spicy romance novels and I we do a lot of things okay I'm not trying to be super TMI over here but I'm just like how are Fruity Pebbles involved how can how do you do you do with Fruity Pebbles I don't get it whipped cream I get it chocolate I get it even fruit strawberries and cherries I get it how the freck get which Frick is also I feel like a Mormon thing to say anyway let's see Taylor finds out at the gallentine that there were you know all these girls that like were not that were Uninvited to the baby blessing and she was super annoyed about it and so all The Uninvited girls go to a bowling alley and they just Bowl together on a Sunday like we're breaking the Sabbath we're going to go bowl on the Sabbath another rule in the Mormon church is that Sundays you know are the Sabbath day you keep the Sabbath day holy you do like intimate family activities you do Church you go to church and you stay home you don't go out and do things you don't go grocery shopping you shouldn't work unless you are someone who's important like in the medical field or you're like an emergency response career whatever the word is I'm like drawing a blank and at the very end you find out that Macy planned a whole weekend getaway for her birthday and she's renting a penthouse for all the girls to come and hang out and for people to come together and to try and like regroup everybody and she just wants everybody to get along and be happy and she's like there might be drama at first some people need to have like conversations in order to be able to move on so it might be drama but also like I just want everyone to get along again and so she's that's kind of how the episode ends and then the next episode will go into that stuff so I'm going to go film episode 4 so hopefully you stay tuned to watch that one if
