go you know fly through it and look at you know things that man are what kind of games are these are they what you think they are and and it's you know some of these mistakes show up and does it cost the other team how many and man it's inevitable it's every year and it it really is it's you know first game and the ones that that that can just play basic football the best man the you know the blocking the tackling targeting communication taking care of the football being smart with it the check down it it it's they win and um so yeah there's things that man they're going to come along with it and it's the first time a lot of these guys in a while have have played that many plays with that much intensity um you know and so this is our first taste we'll get better we'll get in a better flow um on both sides of the ball we will but the end of the day our defense uh held these guys to less points than our offense and our offense scored more points than their offense did and so uh we found a way to win J you to get off that yeah listen I you know uh expected him to to play pretty good you know to play better um and uh and he showed up I mean that was a that was a big game you know to be able to catch some of these and go through it and the best part of it was he didn't even play his best ball there's still so much to clean up um but it also shows the work that he's put in and he he is improving and he's an improved player and he wants it man and he keeps working on it and he just he keeps taking these steps so as long as he keeps doing it um and keeps making plays he's just going to continue to get better so yeah I'm proud of him I'm proud of where he's at but he's got so much room to continue to grow how much is yeah I mean look that's going to help you know and I do believe in that having that onew punch of of two different backs you know but but I just look I said it after we ran the conditioning test uh in whatever that was July 26th I guess um you know the day before we started our first practice and he was he just man you talk about a guy who was in outstanding shape look all of our guys were but this guy just looked I mean he looked like he didn't break a sweat for this thing and and then the first few days of practice he doesn't look fatigued he he just and so he's an unbelievable shape he's worked uh worked extremely hard and U and he's just man he's reliable he's reliable he he runs heavy he's tough he's physical he gets in a rhythm and I think he's a catalyst for us you know you know he starts carrying it and he gets better and better and I think the line feeds off of him and he feeds off of them and um and we get what we get so that guy's a stud just stud yeah yeah I thought uh look I thought Sean Sean had a heck of a plan last week and he had another one this week now we we threw some wrinkles at him you know um I think we we threw a couple of things at him that it was going to take them a minute to adjust to and they did but to that point they adjusted quickly and and Stafford knew exactly you know what what he needed to do he knew where his Outlets were and yeah he was going to get rid of that ball they were going to go a little Tempo on us and some things and uh you know try to apply a little pressure on us um but I I thought he played outstanding I really did man and uh you know and they were they got banged up over there and and they uh they just kept they just kept coming you know yeah yeah huge play huge play and uh yeah the ends I mean it's it's really what we uh this is this was the vision the whole time this is what we we knew we were going to get when we got Davenport and uh we felt really good about uh the production Hutch is bringing and brought last year and what he was going to be able to bring this year and then just the thought of somebody who can crunch the can over there man crush the can and and send him his way a little bit uh or vice versa and that's what Davenport can do he's long he's physical he's strong he's a big man um and so that showed up today you know it showed up we were able to hem him up a few times in there and um and so those it it's it's good for them it's going to be good for Hutch and it's going to be good for Davenport the game looked a lot like last time you guys met this team year same quarterback back and forth same same did you think it would pick up the same way like this you you would hit the field basically running the same way you were last year um I mean you you don't entirely know what it's going to be like I just knew this I knew it was going to be a hard fought game I did know that uh because I I I think this coach does a hell of a job you know I do I think Sean always puts together a good game plan uh and then and Stafford man you know he um it's almost like you don't want to hit him because I think when you hit him he plays better and uh you know he just he just continued to make plays so so I think those two guys are always going to give you a damn good a chance to to uh hang in there and have success and so no I I guess if there's any frustration with me it's just look you don't um you know it's not going to be perfect you just want it to be cleaner you just want it to be cleaner than it was that's all uh even for the first game but ultimately it's always going to be about we got to get better and whether we won or lost today we got to get better and we we won we still have to get better and uh we'll clean all this up and then and we got to play better against Tampa next week yeah no I you know we'll see them tomorrow I you know when I saw uh just the replay of both of them I I I wasn't too concerned I know why they threw them especially the second one like okay I got it you know I understand um it's ticky tacky but that's that's what they do you know and they're going to throw it because they believe it they see it and all good we overcome it um so um but no I I didn't feel like it was some blatant like oh he's out of bad position or I need to talk to him about it I don't want to take away his Stinger Man I want him to play aggressive and look I thought he did some really good things today certainly was not too big for him uh he stepped up I thought Carlton did some good things too really the back iname played pretty good overall you know we just there's a couple of things communication wise we got to clean up and and we will we will okay being a starting quarterback for the Lions moving out here to Detroit what's the first thing you learned about car insurance yeah I game in Detroit without mentioning jir Gibbs in year two he helped account for 163 rushing yards for the Lions Al together today but jir Gibbs going 11 carries for just for 40 yards so he was getting it done to um and a touchdown what did you see from Gibbs in his second year you know I I I love his patience Danny it was one time where he was headed towards the sideline stuck his foot in the ground and got up field to get a necessary first down and that's what I love seeing about Mir he's decisive about what he does out there on the field whether he's going to stick his foot in the ground and get up field he's going to drop those pass and try to get those extra yards those are the things that make good running backs and of course we know he's elusive but he's just a tough guy and you know what I think he's learning from the best because you know me and you we have a fond affection for David Montgomery and I think he's learning a lot of things from David well let's talk about David Montgomery he is a leader in that running back room and he really helped set the tone every game if you know Montgomery can run the rock early on it's it's a good recipe for Success so here you go 17 attempts 91 yards 5.4 yards per carry and his longest run was 421 yards and that massive touchdown just one today that's all he needed in ot to get for the go-ahead touchdown to put these Detroit Lions in the win column for week one but you talk about Montgomery he's such a leader and you can use him in almost any situation what situations do they use him in tonight Lis I think uh to get the tough yardage Danny I think he runs so well between the tackles but David can also get out on the outside he shows his speed but the thing I love about him is two things one he's always running behind his pads and anytime you get a running back that runs behind his pads he's going to be tough to bring down but the other thing is that when he is falling down he's always going forward you know so he's always getting those extra yards that you need or you know that extra inch to that you're going to need he's always doing that so that's what I love about David and he's such a tough-minded kid too and that plays a lot when you play that position the running back position Montgomery is responsible for the play of the game here tonight and it is none other than that OT touchdown here take a look goes a little bit over to the right side and just rushes into the end zone that pretty easy to me L that really did and Danny give them Big Fellas a little credit up up top because he didn't get touched till he got to the goal line so those the big guys doing what they need to do up front to get their guy David Montgomery to the second level yeah it it truly is and we talk about the weapons in this offense you know you have the receivers not the deepest receiver room so how much can you rely on the Run game when that's the case that's what you're going to have to do Danny I think what we need to do is establish run first then try the pass off of the run I think a Jared gets the play action pass is going I think we could take our shots down field to J Mo when we have to look we mixed in a couple of reverses today to J Mo so it's good to be able to get your Playmakers get the ball in their hands so they can do what they need to do out in space you seen David Montgomery do it you seen jir Gibbs get it done today so we just need to be able to get these guys out in the space like Ben Johnson has been doing and and let them like I say do what they do you keep talking about J Mo so let's talk about J Mo he led all receivers here tonight J Mo has not rece had over 69 reception yards in a game that was against Dallas this P last season rather so here you go 121 receiving yards the most in his career in a single game he just needed five receptions to do it and he comes down with a big touchdown pass from Jared G it's that 52 yard ception what did you see from J Mo who's in year three but he's had a lot of roadblocks to get here yes Danny I love to see him run the route tree and that's what I'm seeing from J Mo his first couple of years he was basically a guy that we tried to send deep or we tried to get the ball right in his hands on the quick screen then let him do what he needs to do now I'm seeing j Mo run in routes I'm seeing them run out routes I'm seeing them run curls he's able to run the tree and anytime you got a receiver that can do the route tree he's going to be a much more effective receiver out there almost like amrod because that's what he can do he can run the entire tree J MO is picking that up he's starting to learn where he needs to be at and the biggest thing is Jared G having confidence and knowing he's going to be where he needs to be at oh yeah the Rapport between qb1 and J Mo has been substantial over the off season and J MO is the player of the game because of plays like that 52 yard touchdown catch what a thing of beauty he kept celebrating probably for about I don't know a minute three different celebrations in there Jared go had to stand off on the side and wait literally a minute to go congratulate his wide receiver but you talk about the rout tree and how important that is it's really important when almond raw St Brown wide receiver number one can't get cooking tonight so how did J step up in his place Danny I'm telling you I'm I'm not okay I hope this doesn't sound bad but we might have to get get used to that teams aren't going to play Al and ra the same way they've been playing him the last three years he's been killing teams so they can't continue to play him that way so you gonna see him getting bracketed you'll probably have a guy underneath and a guy on top of him they're going to double team him and take him out the game that's why I said it's going to be so important who's receiver number two we were worried about the receiver number three four and five doing camp we need to worry about who's going to be that consistent re receiver behind almond ra and looks like J Mo wants to take that Ro yeah he he took it right away almond ra St Brown just three catches for 13 yards tonight yeah that is glaring oh my goodness Dam I don't think have we ever seen him with a stat like that I can't if he's not playing probably we'll try to find it for you all right Jameson Williams our player of the game is standing by the podium now let's hear from him um it means a lot you know I put in a lot of work um not just this year it's been continuous work ever since like you know since I got in the league and it's just been this is just the time to show it you know it's first game um it's just a start though we got 16 more in the regular season playoffs we got a lot more ball to play so it's just a start um that's just our offense um and we we knew that from the jump that we got we got Stars we got ball players you know one person don't don't get going we got other people to lean on you know um the offense just shout out to Ben you know he he he C the right plays and he he know he know the right thing right situations to put us in you know um they was out there like uh in and out St Brown a lot double teaming him a lot and you know somebody else had to make plays and I just made the plays when my number was called seems like we' continued to ask you over the last couple years you feel like you're breaking out you feel like you're breaking out is this a night starting year three where you kind of told the football world that you are here to be an NFL star um yeah I also didn't feel like I was an NFL star you know um it's just it's just it's just now it's it's showing um I don't look at this as no no no different game you know it's um just the beginning it's the first game of the season I got a lot more in me though that was real valuable to me um I think to to the team too and and to golf you know we got a real great connection over the over the spring and the summer throwing we threw a couple times in practice um we threw a couple times in La you know so it just translated and the hard work is just finally showing you know um not not with just me with the whole team you know we just that was a hard game to win you know the Rams was a good team and the defense helped out a lot special teams everybody came together you know we just played to the last seconds of the game so um I would say it it feels good you know knowing that the hard work is paying off but we got a lot a lot more to go yeah um it was it it was a play we we we had we we knew who we was going to run it on and we we we had that in in in motion early in the week so we worked on it a couple times you know and you caught in the game whoever we said whoever get whoever get the pass it's it's a mirror play so it was both sides so you know whoever win get the ball did it feel like the playoff game last year um yes yes I would say that because U you know the playoff game last year ended 23 24 if I'm not mistaken it came down to the last seconds just like this one this one actually went further it went to overtime um like I said the Rams was a good team and and and they played real great ball today and I just feel like we played better and we came out on top because you know that's what coach preach to us you know grit and we go we go all the way to his done and you know we going to finish conditioner um not to me not to me I I wouldn't say it was slippery but you know um his first game you know being on Turf for a lot of us you know we didn't some of us didn't play in the preseason so we just like getting back to the turf field we practice on grass a lot so they may be a thing um I'm not really sure about the turf I think it was okay I I don't I don't really know I I ain't slip performance that one of the best itn't best game do you feel like still oh yeah for sure this just this just game one um like I said I put in a lot of work um I expected to have a big game you know um me personally I expect to have a big game I guess I guess it's just big to the world um just because it's my first one but I I plan to have a lot more you know um I don't plan on this being my best game in my career I plan on this just being a start of start of you know me me being me game ball I never got a game ball not BMA not nowhere I ain't even going to lie this right here this might not leave my hands I might sleep like this um I think it scares the defense a lot because you know it has a lot of it has a lot of way we have a lot of ways to stretch the field um you know you can get a ball to gives he can get he can move the chains you can get a ball to anybody we they can move the chains from the tight ends to the running backs to the receivers you know even gol you see he got down there he got the first down for us so you know uh I don't really think it's about speed I think it's about playmaking um you know we come down to who can make the plays and we make plays um not just me Saint everybody make plays so I would be I would say the it wouldn't be the speed it would be the playmaking saint great game is that the best catch you've ever made actually Jameson Williams the smile in his face I don't doubt that he's going to sleep with that ball tonight L I think so if he brought it to the podium I know he's going to sleep with that ball tonight we love it let's talk about his quarterback Jared G sacked twice tonight twice as much as he'd like to be uh especially with such a veteran o line yeah however LA Rams didn't have Aaron Donald but they had Byron young and that pretty much made a difference let's take a look at Jared G's stats here tonight 18 of 28 for comparison Matthew staff Stafford 49 pass attempts Jared G just 28 good enough for 217 passing yards 93 rushing yards interesting um for everyone for the Detroit Lines that's that not right we'll get that fixed um but j3 he had that fabulous what seven y run for a first down that was awesome to see Jared use those Wheels baby we'll distract you guys here with h that really great nugget but Jared goth out of the gates here with Detroit he's in year nine what did you see from that veteran leader oh like you say Danny just a veteran leader and you know we've always been saying since Jared's been here well at least I have been that he's just a cool calm guy you don't know whether we're up down you just don't know what's going on with the game when you look at Jared G but the thing I do know and I always say when you look at him if you standing in that huddle and you look at Jared G and he got that calm demeanor that calms you down that keeps you levelheaded so it's just great to have a quarterback a leader like that that doesn't get flustered no matter what the situation is you know Jared's gonna be like this do not bet against Jared golf in crunch time moments don't do it let's hear from the qb1 he's standing by the podium yeah jimo yeah yeah it's awesome uh that that little double move we had kind of getting ready all week and um he smoked him on it and laid it out there for him made a great catch and a couple big plays from him all night he did a great job kind of uncharacteristically quiet night for St what were they doing yeah I don't know if they were doing anything in particular I think uh the theme of tonight kind of we just kind of kept shooting ourselves in the foot a little bit certainly offensively just you know we had we had some plays there that um we could have had and and and uh I got to be better with the Cadence for our guys and um be a little smoother there on the operational stuff and uh that alone would solve a lot of problems tonight that we had but uh it just wasn't our smoothest but the win's a win we got to be happy about it yeah it was good hand it to demo man that battering ram just hand it to him and and he did the rest it was fun it was fun watching him um kind of catch that second win there in that overtime and our old line the same way and then I was joking with him when we after like we called the play on the one yard line it was like this is scoring like we didn't there was no doubt and um punched it in it was great yeah yeah I think so I mean there there's certainly things that were below our standard um but yeah some of the operational stuff is is ultimately my job and um it wasn't good enough good enough for win win wasn't good enough for our standard yeah man he's our tone Setter he's he's a leader he's he's uh the guy when the gamees in the line we want to find him you remember last year in the playoff game we threw it to him on I think first or second down there so um man he's as valuable to our team as anybody a littleit how great to see response yeah yeah it was a tough sequence for us uh stalled out a couple times I throw the pick almost throw another one and then we get the punt off and um defense gets a stop and then we go down and get the field goal so yeah we we bounced back nicely it was it was nice to see that um ultimately we did enough to win the game and it does feel good when overtime began did you feel like that's how you guys could win it just hammering it as opposed to throwing a lot in over uh yeah you never know it it was uh it was what we wanted to do there at the end I I don't know we throw itce there and on that drive so yeah as soon as one of those runs pops with him you kind of just kind of come back to the well and see if we can get it again wow yeah I think you know ultimately I think it shows that we didn't play our best game um and still won and ton of stuff to clean up uh ton of things to get better at and it it does feel a little bit like week one last year where it's like yeah we kind of like we're making some mistakes but we're able to get the win anyways and um for it to be in overtime it is special and um one I think you know months from now we'll look back and be happy we have I like that everyone everyone compliment David's watch it looks good this team is certainly having some fun and the defense looked like they were having a lot of fun at times namely Aiden Hutchinson up there along that front line we're going to show his stats and the Staggering thing we saw it's not surprising but four QB hits he was all over Matthew Stafford tonight disrupting the quarterback so taking a look at those final stats five t total tackles a sack to go along with four QB hits why was he so productive tonight against that o line and Matthew Stafford Danny he had his spin move working tonight I mean he beat the offensive lineman over him at least three times with his spin move and that was why was able to get that pressure we know he's a Relentless rusher we know he doesn't give up on the play but the bring that spin move today you know it was just really impressive to see him do that and then I I have to than the other guys the UN The Unsung guys you got alen mcneel you got those guys in the middle getting great push in the middle so really Stafford really didn't have a lot of places to go because you had Aiden and Davenport coming from the outside and you had and the rest of those guys pushing from the inside so that's if you talk about Perfect Defense perfect perfect pass rush that's what we seen tonight out of Detroit Lions front yeah and Hut and those up against that D line definitely affected the Run game for La just 27 rushing yards in the second half pretty dang good Brian Branch he's either goingon to love this game or he's GNA hate this game seven total tackles three passes defended granted those probably should be three let's keep it real here Lis and one tfl Brian Branch was all over the ball but just missed what did you see from having coverage Danny look if coach had another game ball to give out I would he would get one I'm telling you he was all over the field today and like you say Danny breaking on routes and anytime you break on a route the way he was doing it to me that lets me know a great film study CU he knew what was coming at him but great instincts too to know you know hey they got this potential route right here and that I can potentially jump that I just loved his game he came up he made Solid tackles too all game long he was that Johnny on the spot like you say got his hands on three balls should have been three ints that he had tonight but Brian Branch was all over the field and when you got somebody versatile like him where you could put him at Deep safety you could put him towards the line of scrimmage you could play him all over the field and you could play him against receivers and that's something you can't say about a lot of safeties in this league this Detroit LS coaching staff has very high hopes for Brian Branch this season in year two let's go to the second level of that defense Alex anzalone from the from the jump played like his long blonde man was on fire he was everywhere tonight he led the lions lions defense in in total tackles 13 had three tfls he's in eight this guy's old but he he's playing like he's a young rookie just running around everywhere why was he so productive tonight well can we start off with the first thing he's a Florida Gator I'll just leave it at that and we'll move on okay Danny no need to dive into that but I love that analogy his long blonde hair was on fire because you were right he was moving to the ball he was reading he was reacting and he was pursuing the ball the night not just him you had Jack Campbell out there doing the same thing these guys were getting to the ball and I know Aaron Glenn has to be pleased with how these guys hustled to the ball not just in the first half but all game long and I think that made the difference on the defensive side of the ball because guys never got gave up and even when they missed tackles their friends were there to help clean it up so just a great game by our defense especially I think in the second half anzelone caught up with in game host Anthony bino for a postgame interview let's hear what those two talked about lions fans we're down on the field right now with our defensive captain number 34 Alex anzelone Alex overtime in game number one how big was this one for you guys to secure at home in week number one it's big guys a really good opponent playoff opponent uh just get that win week one was really good in front of this crowd this atmosphere here tonight I wasn't sure if our crowd could outdo the playoffs of last year it felt just like it oh yeah it's just like it and I don't expect anything less from these fans and next week another familiar opponent Tampa Bay coming to town that'll be exciting let's go let's go one part there he is number 34 Alex anzalone man of very few words I think he just wanted to leave he worked hard tonight Alex analon along that defense another guy that I want to highlight can we talk about Marcus Davenport please yes yes we can let's talk about him listen this man has been injury ridden people forget that he was a former first rounder to New Orleans when Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn was there that's why they brought him here they knew what he was capable of he had four QB hits tonight too and he was up there with hutch in production it seems like he was everywhere up there disrupting Matthew Stafford give me your thoughts on him well I think a lot of pressure on Marcus that report look he's the guy that's supposed to be opposite of the age Hutchinson so when Aiden Hutchinson applies pressure or gets sacks you're supposed to have your buddy with you and that's what Marcus Davenport is supposed to be he's supposed to be that other end that other closer over there and yeah you've been impressed by him Danny you've been talking about even before y before everybody else did now you got me watching him a little firmer and I'm gonna make sure I do that but great star from Marcus Davenport and the reason why I say a great star he made it through the game healthy and that's what when the guy's been struggling with injuries throughout his years you want to that's the one thing you want to see him get to a game and get there healthy yes that is huge okay let's take a look around the league we were hoping I was hoping that Detroit would put on a good show because some of these scores are a little bit wonky today um just to start all right Baltimore KC kicked things off in the NFL 27 to 20 going in the chief's favor Green Bay takes a loss to Philly okay that's B lost love too for weeks they did at least three to six weeks with that miniscus 18 to1 the final Pittsburgh over the Atlanta Falcons they say if you have two quarterbacks you have none and that's that's a bad L for not a good loss bejan Robinson it all falls on you bud Cardinals wow they barely they barely um didn't lose against Buffalo so there you go bills pull out a close one um you got Bears over the Titans Bears what down 177 points and they come back there's no way they should have won this game the Bears should have they Tennessee basically gave it to him hey speak to the NFC North no one's going to hate you for saying that all right Patriots this one shocked me 16 to 10 the final over the Bengals Houston narrowly escapes the Colts Anthony Richardson I have my eyes on him I'm going to keep tabs on him okay good eyes or bad eyes on him okay good he only played in four games last season we'll see what he's got this year if he almost beat the Texans 17 to 20 the final dolphins getting a big win over Jacksonville and then you have Carol Carolina Carolina Dan I thought they were going to be a little better Oh I thought they were going to be better than this there is nothing sweet about that score New Orleans putting it on them 47- 10 the final Vikings wow okay I actually am impressed by that score New York Giants we saw them in preseason they're a gritty group and they lost really big tonight Raiders losing to the Chargers in Jim Harbaugh's debut as the head coach okay that's a big one Bronco oh my gosh they almost beat the Hawks I actually don't know what to make of that score I really don't know what to make of that that's that one's crazy 33 to 17 Dallas over the Cowboys Tom Brady making his debut in the booth and then Washington loses big to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers all right speaking of the buck well you got the the divisional round coming right back here to Detroit it's another rematch NFL script writers knew what they were doing to open this season they're like let's bring back the Rams let's bring back the bucks bucks are coming in week two 1M kickoff inside fordfield Baker Mayfield hopefully he's not feeling very dangerous L want to get to two and0 and I know he's gonna come in like like Matthew with a little revenge on this m we knocked him who Derek Barnes that's right say some prayers for Derek Barnes Derek closed it out but it's gonna be a great test for the Lions next week like you say Tampa Bay put up 37 points today so it's going to test our defense but I think we're going to be ready Danny especially with 60 something thousand people here they were just Bonkers today that's my biggest takea away from today the fans were insane The Atrium was filled two hours before kickoff it's like what time did you guys start today what time do it's probably wasn't healthy it probably wasn't a a healthy start time look a friend of mine he sent me a picture he started tailgating at 9:00 this morning that's insane but you knew this morning no one needs to say that all right LZ on the field what is your final takeaway from this Detroit Lions dub my final takeaway Danny it wasn't pretty okay we had to go to overtime to get it done but the important thing is we got it done today we start the season off one and0 we started off against a very good Matthew Stafford lead team that they're trying to get to a Super Bowl trying to get back to the NFC championship game again for themselves so this was a great start for us a lot of things we need to clean up the coaching staff know that but hey man the victory is a victory we'll take it oh man yeah six penalty is not going to work later on down the stretch yeah but it was a big game especially for Jameson Williams continue to keep your eye on him and then we'll see how this secondary really comes along saw terion Arnold in there making some rookie mistakes probably more more like just one DPI not two uh but that's subjective and then Kirby Joseph that was a big in as well that really set the tby do you think mellowing out but I was just going to ask you that did you think coach told him not to do the flip normally when he liability it's a liability a million yeah no we love it all right well that does it 26 to 20
