Manchester United v Liverpool | The Friday Night With Erdinger

[Music] it is Friday night we are in the Red Lion uh we've had a minor technical issue which has ruled Craig Hannon out but also this is going to be a quicker Friday night and it normally is anyway because of the the the reality which is post production so we're here with ainga we're in the red line we're very pleased to be here but the issue we have is that this is obviously a Time based show because the transfer window is still open and Liverpool are doing bits so it looks like Bok is going to go to middles spr the time right now is 1650 like check the work countdown 1650 so what we're going to do is do this a bit quicker than we normally would because then it gets out quicker and then if we need to do more later on we can then respond to it one way or another uh that system it's the only one I can think of unless we're going to start doing it live from the Red Lion and I just don't know if got's interet could handle it we've done that once before once before it was a big show there yeah it was the clock one so we did consider that but I've thought no no no we'll just do it this way we'll settle ourselves in beded days it's tooo much particularly when I'm the consistent member of both of them that's no one wants that no one wants that the view in public speak for yourself sorry all right time is the Ence Phil time is of the essence so so far Phil it looks like well have not done anything but they haven't said they're not doing anything this is the bit that I just sort of can't get past which is in the past theyve been so happy to say we're all done in a in a way quite right now I'd quite like to be put out to the misery I'd like them to have said we're old on if they are indeed old on but it makes me think they're not old on which makes me they're trying to do something but I think that what that's something is is now quite complicated and it's now obviously his every minute pass is less likely yeah I mean surely at 16 what 51 52 by now we are now at the point where it is basically impossible to to do something unless it is someone from within a 50 mile radius or something like or already got like doctors you could probably just about include wolves probably just about get to wolves you could certainly do have and if they were they want to do that one they want to do the Ever One do the Ever One um but you're thinking now it's probably probably past the point of Vin con is probably on the verge of being Seno because the well just in terms of the club are very aggressive at going business is done we've done our business finished that hasn't happened and I thought it was really interesting when James Pace um threw water on two fires yesterday he there was the the verella one and was was quite late at night and there was the Santiago hezza is that his name yeah it was the hezza one as well which they were both straight away sort of gone no this isn't a this isn't a thing but it didn't say because usually in previous years when that kind of thing's happened it's gone and Liverpool are now done for the window and they haven't said they're done which leaves you a little bit curious as to what's going on there a mad position to have taken because I think that It ultimately means everyone's just going be really disappointed because everyone's had hope right until the last minute that something could happen because they've said business isn't done and I understand that them wanting to do the right deal and make the right sign and so they're not they're kind of saying essentially we're open to only the right thing and not just doing things for the sake of it but you must know that now that's not going to happen at this point so they we should just assume the business is done and I think giving people that hope means that people are going to be perhaps wrongly angry because you've let people keep hoping right until the end I would agree I think I just my interpretation is no no you're right I just think it's a mad it's a mad approach like I'm not annoyed at not having made any signs I'm fine with it if it had been the approach from the outset and if they' been clear I guess about what it is they were seeking to do and that if that didn't happen there would be nothing the problem is we know in you can know anything in this world Phil we know they really wanted to do do a deep line midfielder they really really wanted to do one uh it was about as progress as he possibly can be without being completed the fail to do it that will mean there will be I think a correct perception that ultimately they would have liked the very least one more deep ey midfielder I think the number of first team players they've got is the number of first team players they want uh if we include Endo uh because I think if a deep L midfielder comes in I think endo leaves yeah I I think that that is obviously a manager informed decision as well I sort of half disagree with it I you know I for instance I think at this point I think there's a lot of people who want them to do a center back but the only way they were going to do a center back was going to be if they let Gomez go as well and I disagree with that I I'd like them to go with nine Defenders not eight I think he wants to go with 23 three goalkeepers and then basically de facto 20 Outfield players where he's got two for every position I think he might need more than that but but I think my point is I I think they've got the number they want there's maybe just questions of quality in perhaps three areas left back Center back and deep line Midfield yeah I think the thing with the hold Midfield I think it feels to me like it's been a case of we want either a really good one like a a genuine starting 11 footballer moves the needle makes Liverpool a better team or a number who can sort of swell the ranks a bit and feels like the P who's going to swell the ranks is probably Tyler Morton it doesn't like he's been sort of made available to like he's going to go and you lusen came in for him and it didn't didn't happen and he's not doesn't let he's going anywhere so I think it's probably fair to say that he is now probably more involved than we would have expected a week ago and you can debate the Rights and Wrongs of that you can say that it's not what you want and that's that's absolutely fine I think he's I think he's an reasonably okay footballer I I think it's a bit weird that Leverkusen tried to sign him and if we'd have signed someone today that lusen tried to sign and failed to sign last week we'd all go oh that that'll he'll do as a he'll do as an option but because it's someone you've got and you don't get the the excitement of finding his flight on the internet and so so for I just love playing detective need people to know how much Phil flight he's above it all you know what I mean he to for school this man has watching flights like no one's business all week I also I I I spotted that show in one before anybody else you did you we first on yeah you we first on it your version of me watching Tommy Fury flying back to get to Manchester and then that's that state is going up 3 hours later it's that but for boys yeah fun fun and you can let your imagination run wild with when you see a flight from from somewhere and you go that might yeah yeah yeah that was the one the one that went to Athens and apparently it was a real thing and it it was definitely not a thing cuz plan just not sitting in Sal B for 24 hours is it which no one no one seemed to entertain the screenshot that said this plane's going to sit here for about 26 hours and then go somewhere else you know yeah it's not bringing a football if it's just sat off for 26 hours they're moving equipment around as well planes just fly from A to B yeah like one of them that brought one the other day the one that brought people like you're some sort of expert when you've been getting the one who getting the most excited absolutely oh yeah I'm rising above this now that was actually the opposite of above I think you'll find the absolute opposite but like the one the one that bought people back from Valencia during the medical the other day flew to Blackpool the other day oh so who knows they just do all M [ __ ] so that's that bit done in so far as it's now it's now 1656 clock watches noic nothing's happened no no no um I've got bits and pieces uh of of whacking through loads and loads of little things here and no one's telling me anything and Joy on notifications Mar stuff uh excellent so we'll we'll park that maybe we'll revisit at the end the next thing then becomes first and foremost the the Champions League draw which was maybe a little tougher than we'd like but no one's lived a reality one of yet and we don't win the games incidentally did you see the op to rankings of who got the hardest draw no we got third who got first par s man PSG yeah of the top eight there the top nine no of the whole competition of everyone the easiest one was Celtic really yeah yeah oh okay there's no like I think again this is where everyone has learned there's no advantage to being seeded it's just a it's just a technicality so yeah just the look thereof at Paris s's draw when I saw oh my God See's face when he when he saw it he's just it was like he seen a ghost not fun not fun at all so we've got according to op there for the third hardest but we don't know when the games fall yet that's going to be a big part of it as well I think there's you know with it as well we're all just getting to experience it for the first time we don't know how many points you're going to need um to go through I'm just really excited I almost feel really basic about it I'm like I'm going to get to watch all these at home I'm hopefully going to go to one away watch the others on the Telly I just found it genuinely quite exciting I've not enjoyed the cynicism yeah no I think to be honest my main my my um response to it is the same as it has always been is just looking at a list and going nice holiday nice holiday nice holiday would quite like to go there are there flights there from Liverpool who knows that hasn't changed and that's kind of the main thing that I get out of it Jona was the one that we about one of the home teams that you don't get to play away and there's one particularly that's really quite yeah yeah but I think to be honest my my enjoyment of it and experience of it hasn't changed at all cuz it's a bit like when you get the fixtures list and go which one's my birthday which one's Christmas which one's whatever I kind of just like going could I get a little holiday to Jona here and that's it basically there's there is something Phil I think where with it all i' the cynicism of it strikes me there's this desire I've noticed to say it's this many games to only eliminate this many teams but there is an enormous amount of effectively importance on finishing in that top eight and the top two as well the top two cuz the top two separated on the different sides because it's a The Knockout stage is a bracket now so it's going to go that way so the one and two are on the opposite side so you're going to want that you know I've been surpr not surprised because everyone tries to be cynical about every change that football ever makes in any way shape or form but Do's this desire to act as though all there'll be loads of dead rubbers I think the reality is there might be very very few and when people begin to see that and live one I think it will go that way there will be a couple of sides who feel relatively safe if they win four of the F win the first four or something if it breaks that way I just think that until you've lived one I've got no real sense of it and I think that everyone's missing how determined decides where in pop one will be to that item one of them's not going to and I think two of them might not and if Paris s have got the hardest draw I think it's possible three might not and that suddenly does shake a lot of because someone could therefore go out in the knock the the the playoff knockout round and you know I I'm I think it's going to I think every game's going to matter pretty much yeah I think the the I think we did the live reaction last night and the best way I sort of summed up what the table and what I don't think people are grasping is you could win your first four games and be sixth yeah cuz it's not outrageous that six different teams win their first four games we obviously don't know orders and stuff but they're not you know these six teams not playing each other so it's not it's not out the question that the all these independent events just fall on the same way and you you've done four games like last season season before season before that you Inn your first four games you've won the group yeah you're either qualified or very likely to wion the group or you have won the group like we there was the 2122 season when we were literally the group winers after four games y this season you still going to need to qualify for that top eight if you win your first four games you can't just down tools you can't move on you can't like the the main thing that from reading stuff is I think a lot of people are in for a sort of December related shock cuz they're going to look at it after five six games and go H God this they're second and they still need to get four points to ensure that they've qualified yeah but they might also be able to come third and lose all I think it's going to throw people off and really change the way we think about it because we think of a league table and think yeah 1 to 20 you play everybody else and that's that whereas this is completely different and then will be the where the group order the order of the games comes and someone might have a really tough three games last three games it could be a little bit we don't see that yet we'll see it soon enough we speculated that we we thought 16 points would get your top eight last night is what we thought did you get to 69 guess I think 15 timate I think I think if you got because there will be knock on effect as to what you did to other people's results so I think if you won four Drew three lost one you will probably get three with 15 is my guess but I think it will be 15 and by the way what I've just described there's really hard for everyone who's in the whole competition as much as we're all a bit like [ __ ] Real Madrid there's a bit of Real Madrid going because we really been bothered with anfield uh because it could fall God knows when anyway we're with the Friday night we are with the wonderful people out aing and we are playing Manchester United this weekend so we need to go and but we play Manchester United on Sunday we do how are you feeling about it absolutely fine you know thought when we got the fixtures list I and we did a overview of it I think in a three strikes at the start of the Season or just before the start of it um and it was the one that everyone was worried about and had strong feelings but and now honestly absolutely fine they're [ __ ] they're really [ __ ] and and we're you know so far solid so I think it'll be fine don't get me wrong I'm not going into it completely confident it's the only one so far where I've had a degree of nervousness about anything but I just think it'll be fine I'm I'm I like this um and the one the thing about it is I'm not imbuing it with any meaning yes 100% it has no meaning Beyond whether or not you get the three points if we lose or draw and it's a bit of a my game I'm just going to shrug me shoulders and say well listen it's been mad at Old Trafford for years you never know what you're going to get up to including 1920 when we win every other [ __ ] game that one still finishes 1-1 somehow Phil there's been really good Liverpool teams that haven't won there there's been really bad Liverpool teams that have won there going more historically there's been a great Liverpool team that's won their 5-n I feel like it's I think it's almost weirdly the game that needs to have as little context as possible yeah absolutely you think about when the Liverpool teams that you know I I I remember the first time I remember Liverpool winner though I was think I was 13 like yeah which is quite an effort like for Liverpool and away game having come off the back of being dominant for a period that they didn't win at all Trafford between I think it was 92 and 2000 something like that and it isn't the game I think you read a great deal into I sort of look at last season and I think there's possibly some scars there just G like in a general thing like I'm looking at this go it doesn't really matter what they did last week because what happens is that Liverpool can go there lose 2-0 without yeah any emphasis on anything that we know anything about it's just possible that it's a bit mad um it's a real opportunity for the manager though I think because if he takes the bad um feelings of of last season I'm trying to think of a better way but I don't think don't think I've got one but feeling day you know it knocked out the cup it pretty much knocked it knocked the league title out of our hands although it didn't technically kill it there and then it a kickoff it was in our hands at full time it wasn't yeah and if he's able to then come in straight away iron out the floors coming away from there with three points all of a sudden the players looking at it going and gone this is big and they're a little bit taller the fan base is looking a bit taller and going and gone that was horrible there in March and April when we went there was March and April yeah it was wasn't it March and April was horrible and we've just gone there in September and gone I'm gone this is this is good this but that's why I think exact OPP Neil said that I think it like I'm not worried but I do think it is massive because it's the first real test and it's a chance to kind of I don't know address some Old Wounds and also set kind of score straight and make a real statement it's the first time that you get to go and say this is what this Liverpool side is about and this is how different it's going to be and I think not just for us as fans but the narrative about it like outside of just our Liverpool bubble of things is going to be about it being a real test and a real kind of opportunity for him and I think that that's why it is really really important I'm still confident but I think it's incredibly important just in terms of how other people view this new era on a similar I think it's quite easy to write offer as a feat as well though because you can just go as we've said we never win there like I think it's it's seven seven wins in the 24 years something like that it's not many is it like not many at all so that means it's s and 34 yeah but this but also sort of my wider bit on it is I do want I think that will be the external thing certainly if we go there and we look good but then there's every chance that by the time you get to the end of November a few other sides have just won there yeah yeah you know and that's in in the grand scheme so I understand it's interesting the sort of the the almost I think what I'm almost saying is other people can have like I think we looking great Nick and almost no matter what happens on Sunday I'm going to basically look at the September run of games and feel like we looking great Nick and back as well huge opportuni to come back in in the way in which it's going to go come we've lost lost but I'm just looking at it from point yeah and that's but even if we win I just sort of feel a little bit like cuz I I can see a world where we win and they just look like the scrappy horrible version of themselves not the one that rock suddenly manages to appear for half an hour when Liverpool come to town at which point then you're like well we' just basically beaten a side who've been pretty AB in 2024 and and it'll it'll still feel like you know and I'm going and I'm really looking forward to going I'm the best way I can sort of frame this is where I almost end up as it feels a bit like wi gooderson yeah but that's and that's a bit mad because the Manchester United for the very same reason that's why I'd prefer to not be going into it off the back of two defeats for them because it's it's a really [ __ ] start to the season against sides that they should and don't like no disrespect to Brighton but they that they should be winning again they beat foram they got beat by Brighton they were ultimately I thought they were less good than Brighton until the 60 Minute Mark but they were really good for 25 minutes it's funny the goal that doesn't get given it's it's got a clut like thing about it the whole it's comic it's slapstick but I think that we saw last season Amelia when it they were crap until it goes 1-1 against us it goes one1 and then the really good until it goes 2-1 and then I think everyone in the ground went oh God what do we do now when it went 2-1 to Liverpool in a really weird way but but I I think the point is I think that man united can play well for half an hour I think if we see that half an hour off I don't think lose the game if we don't concede in that half an hour I don't think we'll lose the game if you see what I mean I'm not saying we'll win it I think there's a big difference in like the the kind of wider context in which that half hour happens because it happens at a really high stress point in which everyone's thinking if this doesn't go our way this is it we've lost it and we've thrown away opportunities and as you say that wasn't necessarily the case but it feels like you're throwing away a chance whereas you it will more feel like a it's a shame because it would have been a great opportunity to prove ourselves there it would have been a real statement whereas it's not a it doesn't feel as kind of like fatalistic so yeah that can be the case but those two separate half an hours can mean a lot more or a lot less and that's all fair what are you expecting and it's a mad question I don't think there's an answer I don't have any expectations genuinely I'm I'm going and I'm sort of preparing myself to be frustrated walking out the ground because like mainly as a cop mechanism to be perfectly honest because because I sort of came out that ground after that cup final that cup final after that cup quarter final and I was quite I was low I think i' had i' had three drinks before the coach moved which I think which I think sort of summed up um my my mood coming out of that coming off that football ground that day but yeah like if Liverpool play to the best of their abilities they should win but Manchester United away almost exists on a different level to to every other game for Liverpool so I'm going with no expectations I'm just see what happens I'm going to have a nice time nice day have a nice day also made up to get out of the way at this point imagine it being yeah exactly it's done now later from a pure stylistic football point of view that it being the third game of the season means that they probably can't you know they haven't had a 4-n whacking from brenford like they did we played in third game of the season of the year but it probably means that they can't do the sit behind the ball and a point a good result and if if we Nick something that's fine like they did in the the two games the back in the last season I think that possibly helps us but we'll see no expectations no no no disappointments no expectations no disappointments but I think we think we're going to win yeah no I do definitely yeah but no expectations no dis is a great way to live I think we're going to win but keep it on sort of prepared to Thomas I'm prepared to be bitten on the ass there's a Thomas Hardy quote that the secret acquires happiness is limiting your aspirations uh but I am not into that my aspirations are [ __ ] enormous uh and I like my happiness to be as loud as possible uh which it would be if Manchester United fall to the mighty AR slot Liverpool cool nothing's happened uh it is now 1710 in the magic of Television but we've had some nice aing uh and we're moving ourselves forward and Sunday's going to be absolutely massive no matter what and we'll debrief and pick the bones out the transfer window on a million different shows the other side of it but one thing matters go to Old Trafford win the game feel great I'll say there's no context to it but I want the three points in the back of our booths see you later on [Music]
