Two Guys: Picking Iowa State and Iowa's record for the 2024 season

New Jersey which is is the southern tip of New Jersey why would you go to New Jersey on vacation if you live in Florida well we're going there to see friends that uh we used to take a trip every uh okay so I'm yeah I'm going to the I'm in the Ozarks again vastly different vacation site you in the Hamptons just eating those Hampton Tomatoes like apples and I'm down at the redneck Riviera that ready for college football we are going to do a big college football show today though again this is pre-recorded because Hassel was in studio we wanted to do another one together and we thought we would go game by game for Iowa and Iowa State today which where are you at like knowledge wise like where do you as far as prep for the season goes because 3 weeks ago I felt like I was at like a two yeah now I feel like I'm like a six media help I know I'm going to get farther but I I feel like I'm getting there now I still it's still a ramp up for me like I'll I'll feel a lot better I I'll feel like I'll know a lot more three weeks from now can we reserve the right to change our minds on these games I think so I think that's I think this is what we feel right now this is a verbal contract better better program in the state this year I would say it it's going to be a lot harder for me I think to to predict Iowa State's wins and losses compared to Iowa I and can't you just say that's a big 12 thing too these team are all so similar and like a lot of coaching changes we don't know a lot about many I now I I know enough about these big 12 teams to be dangerous like I I can give youhm my biggest thing too and this is why I even go to these media days now is cuz you sit around the bar with the other writers MH and that's where you learn like they like the national guys will quiz me about Iowa State they do it all the time and like I love just oh go this guy covers Kansas State go have a beer with him and we just talk about you you just get insight mhm that's like on the ground and that so I feel like I have a better hold on the Big 12 okay but we we'll start we're we're we're picking them to beat North Dakota are we yes are we doing this together or are we going to AR argue MADD can you keep track of the records as we go along I I think we go game by game and and we'll discuss you might say that's a win I might say it's a loss well let's go to let's go straight to September 7th Iowa City on CBS real quick I did thehawk game Circa does provide key game lines and two of our states games are there there's there's a line for that I could find I thought there were more out there is this is this still 2 and A2 Iowa minus 2 Iowa minus 2 and A2 now again I told you when I was in Vegas I was sitting with some odds makers one guy like their their ratings are kind of wonky they're all over the place these guys all have them and then Vegas usually comes in the middle somewhere I I was with one guy who had Iowa State minus5 even on the road I was with one guy who had Iowa minus one the I will say just the numbers say with Iowa minus 2 and a half the value is on Iowa State and points here just with the numbers now you can think of a different have a different take on this game but most of the numbers have this is to get action on the home Big 10 team I have talked to um some betting analysts at CBS some uh football analysts and they love this line for Iowa State there's people picking Iowa State and they don't even care about the points they want the money line yeah I think Iowa State's going to win this straight up I think this is um for whatever reason even though Iowa is returning almost as many starters as Iowa State I just feel like Iowa State might be at a better level early in the season than Iowa that's my analysis on this game too exact same point new coordinator yes your quarterback hasn't played for a long time this is your first test for if you're Iowa I mean it's your first test with Iowa State too but like but Iowa State like their Bull game sucked like they they [ __ ] the bed in the Bull game but leading up to that like they were playing they were a well oiled machine towards the end if you remember correctly right like that Kansas State game and that was a weird game with all the snow but remember how they just kicked BYU's ass like that they were playing pretty well and and and going on a pretty solid trajectory and it's weird it it it it's kind of ass backwards because usually Campbell's teams are the ones that struggle in September historically yes it's just I feel like this team is going to be better out of the gates than most Iowa State teams because of all the experience and then I just don't know what to make of Iowa offens and you know the coordinator situation like I I don't know it's so I would feel better about this as an Iowa fan if this was a couple weeks later but the fact that it's it's right there at the start with these new changes and look I know Kade mcnamer has been there I know he played in this game last year but this is new for him too I mean he he hasn't played he hasn't played at Iowa healthy ever he started last season unhealthy yeah and that's the whole thing they haven't started Camp as the time we record the show I he sounds healthy but I would absolutely take those two and a half points I would too I think Iowa state is going to win that game I'm going to pick a cyclone Victory we agree and what a statement that would be if Matt Campbell could get that done well because here's the situation with them you win that Iowa game you're likely starting off six and0 what's the second is Iowa the second best opponent on Iowa State schedule behind Utah on paper Kansas State You could argue Kansas state is better than Iowa I I don't know if they are I I don't know if they are either but that I I would get hey will you pull that up Matt like the Connelly ratings this would be really interesting like whatever like power rating like I think Bill Connell is probably the best to see where Iowa and Iowa State actually are when it comes to I think so when I look at this schedule we'll just go we'll go game by game but I think Texas Tech is underrated in the Big 12 and I I think central Florida's going to give people some problems this year mhm uh Iowa is 22 in the S&P Iowa state is 30 where is Kansas state that would be the team I Kansas State 77 there you go yes so they're Utah is 18 yeah okay so Iowa would be by the Numbers going into the season the third toughest game for Iowa State now but that goes on the roads that probably is a tougher game than Kansas State at home as far as how the power ratings Iowa State as as you you mentioned you could if Iowa State wins that game you can go on rooll and you don't have to play Utah and Kansas State till the last two games of the season so we've got Iowa State 2- 0 coming home after a buy against Arkansas State win three and0 now the conference season starts and it's a trip to Houston weird a weird first Big 12 game a visit to Houston another scenario though where I I I don't think they're going to be very good but I'd rather play them now then in November with Willie Fritz just getting his program installed right and I think that's another win yeah Iowa State I do too so we have Iowa State 4 and0 you get Baylor at home that should be a win like you yes now I think Baylor is probably going to have a bounceback year in some capacity where do they but they're just not as bad as they were Dave Randa made a lot of changes new offensive coordinator they spend a ton of money in nil they're better than what people think they are MH but Iowa state with the team Iowa St has should be a touchdown favorite in that game so that's 5-0 going to West Virginia the next four games will tell Iowa State's season West Virginia UCF Texas Tech Kansas yes I'm gonna give him a loss in Morgantown I was there last year I think of a four games coming up that's the toughest and I think a lot of people would disagree with that they probably say at Kansas but that's it's an arrowhead yeah there'll be more Iowa St fans there I was in West Virginia last year they had that bounceback season they kind of well for the time being saved their head coach's job I don't know how good West Virginia is this season again they're they're kind of an anomaly to me they're top 35 S&P going into it they have a really good quarterback I just I don't like that trip for Iowa State it's the only thing with them it's like remember it's like a year ago everybody's firing Neil Brown mhm and then they they have this really good year it was kind of like Iowa State really where nobody expected much and then they completely exceed expectations and now you go to this year feeling really good about yourselves down there in Morgantown that that's how they feel I mean they think that they've got an NFL prospected quarterback and but it's kind of like to me like there's a little bit the opposite of Baylor like I don't think Baylor is that bad I just don't know if West Virginia is that good I don't think West Virginia is going to be that good I think they might be similar to last season I just I if if Iowa state does what we have them doing 5-0 they're going to be ranked going to West Virginia we're going to L them here you are too yeah a loss at West Virginia I think that like so everybody's already gone down to the last two games of the year like Utah and Kansas state right and that could decide the Big 12 championship game in some Capac man those three games will probably have a big tell in whatever happens there because you've got three contenders playing in those three weeks those three games but I truly believe that the West Virginia Central Florida Texas Tech stretch is a absolute trap stretch for Iowa State not so much Kansas I think that they'll be ready for that I like the arrowhead thing I think Iowa State wins that game West Virginia Central Florida Texas Tech scare the hell lot of me I think Texas Tech is the most underrated team in the league and Central Florida to me is the most intriguing I could I could see a scenario where if this kid from Arkansas they're going to be running like wild cat doing all sorts of crazy [ __ ] Malon treats them they're like an SEC program is the way that they're recruiting and paying and all that stuff he had his year to get acclimated to the league they're just such a weird team they're stylistically they were they were very volatile too and at the end they were playing pretty good ball they I could see what central Florida being like 10- two or I could see them being you know 4 and eight and is malison the answer like I I could really draw that up for this team can you see UCF coming up here October 19th in beating Iowa State could I see it yes but they're they're a vastly different team away from home the bounce house is one of the great HomeField advantages in college football the last 10 years so I'll give Iowa State a win there I'm giving him a win against UCF as well and then another buy which is good they really good buy time before that Texas Tech game in my opinion so Texas Tech a team that you believe is going to exceed expectations this season I think so I think they've kind of been quiet picked eighth in the league I think that they're they've been quietly pretty good the first two years under what what's his name Joey McGuire Maguire yeah call Joey McIntyre isn't he isn't Jo wasn't Joey mckinty one of the New Kids on the Block step by step but I think what seven and six his first two seasons uh winning seasons but not like great Seasons they I think that could be a tough spot the here's how I I was talking to Tim Murray about this on cwp a few weeks ago like to me a lot of these big 12 teams it's like do I have faith that they are like something that they were a year ago no I think the these teams I treat them like stocks right like like the stock market like it goes up down one the other like the big 12 doesn't have programs like Ohio State Michigan and Penn State that are always going to be good they just don't maybe Utah now but in the past they haven't and like I've seen this so many times with these like bayor teams where you start to write them out and then all of a sudden they're playing for the championship the next year um and I I think Texas Tech has a bounceback people are down on them right now why are they down on cuz they they underperformed last year like they had a really good year in Maguire's first season I thought they had very similar years I mean look but they wi what were they were they not seven and six each year my point is the perception was worse last year because they had higher expectations I think that they are going to surprise a lot of people and I don't like that game on November 2nd I will pick Iowa State to win it I love it coming off off of a buy that's what I really like about that that is homecoming by the way too okay so does that matter like I I don't even know like do you think that matters Matt not really anymore I mean I feel like it's not as big of a deal if it used to be I shouldn't say that I I work for the Alumni Association put on homecoming but it's a bigger deal for like former students and stuff than it is like the game it's a big deal for the current a lot of the current students and maybe some people that have been involved with it but the players don't care about it at all I remember like in the 90s though we would always try and get to the homecoming game at Iowa it's like a big deal they do a Hall of Fame weekend now which I think is the Arkansas Arkansas State game so that's kind of the football I am giving them wins against Central Florida Texas Tech and S and and Kansas I am I think I would not be shocked if they come out of that four game stretch with two losses but I think the most likely loss of those is is at West Virginia by the way but I haven't beating Kansas I'm confident about that Texas Tech 8 and5 two years ago seven- six last year see what I'm saying though like they jumped out of the gate so well with him and then everybody just assumed they were going to go from eight wins to 10 and then they had seven and now people have sold them and I just don't know if that's fair so Hassel where are you on the tech game I'm gonna give him a win against Texas Tech and I do think they beat Kansas I think it's it's big that that games at Arrowhead and Iowa State fans are going to travel and make that uh a home atmosphere in Kansas City people are bringing their campers down it's going to be crazy at Arrowhead Stadium and look we've got this team heading into mid November the last three games of the year with just one loss and it's Cincinnati at home before the the two game stretch how can you not have him beating Cincinnati there Cincinnati's not very good so Jesus where we've got them nine and one what would they be r with the loss to with the loss to West Virginia what would they be ranked if they're 9 And1 going into Saturday November 23rd at Utah I don't I'm starting to think that I'm drinking the kooler how can we both have them nine I I was State at 9 and one Iowa state has never won 10 games in a season well they basically did in 2020 they did we just be fair about that the season was shortened you still played or 000 I mean or 2020 I'm sorry the co year I'm pretty sure the record book says that they've never won 10 games they haven't but it would have that year is what I'm saying is that when you guys tried to claim the Big 12 regular season Championship even though that didn't exist yes do you remember the old I have a it's one of my favorite t-shirts I should wear it more it's a big 12 North co-champion chip t-shirt like 2004 we all ran to the bookstore to get those yeah Championship so Iowa State's 9 and one heading to Utah loss I don't see a win there and then your if that happens that's two big 12 losses you could be coming home for a win and in scenario against Kansas State because if if they're where they're at at nine and one going to those last two games one loss in conference do you think a split gets you there it might it's it's going to depend on these stupid uneven schedules and stuff like it you talk about tiebreakers potentially helping teams in the Big 10 and the SEC get large wouldn't it would hurt Iowa State you're analyzing the schedule you won't get an at large well from a bird's eye view you'd be better off losing to Iowa well yeah right like I mean that's a fair point now because it's yeah like you can't just go by numbers because like it doesn't matter if you could lose to Arkansas State and Iowa and still make the playoff mhm yeah you know which that makes it kind of interesting I mean if if it would have been last year right like after that Ohio game nobody would have picked Iowa State to do what they did but you know it made it interesting I have them losing to Utah I think there's coming home against Kansas state would you say that that's the the biggest rivalry I think so in the Big 12 for Iowa State now yeah absolutely it's at home November the 30th so that's Thanksgiving Saturday czy I've got I'm gonna have them losing that game as well okay so you're going Kansas state gets revenge for last year and Iowa State goes nine and3 overall but all three losses in the Big 12 and they miss out on the Big 12 Championship I'll just for the sake of fun I'll put him at 10- two I'll have him beating Kansas at home I want to put a caveat with that though I think there I have them at 10 and two I think there's a better chance they're at nine and three like I think they slip up somewhere what do you think the most likely record for Iowa state is nine and three yes I love they're over the win total I think they're underrated the the win total is seven and a half yeah I would play out Iowa and Iowa State over blly this year I haven't we haven't gone through Iowa schedule yet and we have them at 0 and one losing the scw game so I love you know what I love about Iowa State schedule is the bye weeks this year I mean it it's really advantageous well I like where the second buy is I hate where that first buy C I'd rather it be after Arkansas State you have you play two games and then you have a buy and then you like ramp back up again to Arkansas State that's not a good week for it I kind of like that though cuz you you can rather have North Dakota Iowa Arkansas State than the Buy start film work you can work on it you can make some changes get the you know grease of skids a little bit against Arkansas State and then boom you're into the Big 12 I don't hate it I I don't like that first buy but I'm telling you when most fans look at this schedule they look at Iowa and then they skip over everything and they go to Utah and Kansas State the stretch between October the 12th and November the 9th is really really tricky for them the West Virginia Central Florida Texas Tech and Kansas that is a tricky tricky part where there is my whole point is even Baylor I'll throw Baylor into the mix too Chris October 5th till then the difference between Iowa State and those four teams is not that big like I know they got all these guys back I'm telling you talent-wise like I think Iowa State's pretty talented but it is not Head and Shoulders above any of those teams but you're not worried about going to Houston no no I think Iowa State I think that's like BYU last year I think Iowa State wins that by 25 I think they take care of Cincinnati in that manner I I think they'll beat Baylor like I'm I'm not as worried about that one although I just think he's a better Coach than most people do I think oranda there's a reason they didn't fire him right he's got one more chance they will if if they're bad again this year but it was kind of like the Neil Brown thing it's like if you really think a guy sucks you pull the trigger especially at a place like B we have more money than God yeah so we've got Iowa State having a very successful year beating Iowa and having a chance to play for a big 12 championship game those last two weeks I them faltering I I think they're going to falter down that stretch let's say they go nine and three mhm they're not in the Big 12 championship game mhm so they're playing like the alamoo bile I don't know is that a successful season oh yeah are you kidding me I think it is but I don't think Mo I think a lot of fans nine and three that would be the what the best maybe not record percentage wise what do you think Matt do you think fans would be happy with nine and three that's absolutely uh successful let's say in theory they lose to Iowa and then they lose two more in the Big 12 don't play but still don't make the big 12 Championship is that a success I would say at this point with an expanded playoff I think it would not be a success what what would be a success getting into the playoff this year we're talking about Iowa State not Iowa I know what you just I'm telling you what I read of the fan base like I think that you guys I think expect to go to the playoff no I'm not saying that I want to see it's dis it would be disappointing if you miss if you finished and you're ranked 13th or 14th or 15th they telling me that would be a disappointing season but like we've been talking about I want to see what this committee does I want to see how many like how they value strength of schedule will they put more than one big 12 team in this year I mean we'll obviously see how the season plays out but I it's hard to say at this point with without seeing okay oh lower eight and four playing the Alo B I think that would be a little disappointing yeah I think that's there's the break right there it's like I think that I think maybe depends where those WIS come from but not not a great SE I think nine and three is be a great season for Iowa State I don't disagree with you I'm telling you what I think a lot of the loud fans would say and I I think that there's an expectation for this how many times has Iowa State won n champ in a regular season yeah you're not wrong twice I have they ever in a big 12 season no no in in a regular yeah without without a championship game without a bowl game well did it with senica and Sage right didn't they get to nine I think so I it's it's a fascinating convers we'll get to Iowa Game Day Men's Health took Chris in there last week to meet the crew they do a phenomenal job I heard a story this is this is really cool uh so a lot of guys just don't go to the doctor which which we should but Game Day Men's Health was doing like the screening that they do when everybody comes in for the first time and they found some elevated numbers in this guy's prostate count and the guy ended up having prostate cancer and and our friends there in anony saved this dude's life so it's just it's another reason to just go and get that get just get that stuff checked out they can help you and if you don't need anything they'll they'll tell you you don't need anything uh but I I feel better than I have in 10 years and I'm not just giving you guys lip service they have anony West de Mo and North Liberty locations by way 2000 Iowa state was 9 and three okay y Big 12 North won the Insight bull uh but see that's not nine regular season wins that that's eight regular season wins they've never won nine games in a regular season because in 2020 they were eight and two in the regular season won the Fiesta Bowl I just like there's part of me it's like let's do it even with like basketball this year it feels similar to me because you have this rare thing happening in 2024 where you have all your guys back M can we can we get to Iowa I mean what are we doing you're going to WL the basketball schedule what I'm I'm comparing like the expectations versus reality aspect of the conversation okay it because like what will basket like if they don't reach a final fouret mad they they've had major success in basketball yeah I just think that like this is a window for football this is a definite window I think Higgins is a first round pick I I think he'll be a that type of a wide receiver like and he's gone n's gone like they this is a big window of opportunity for them and I think fans can look at it that way cuz who knows I don't know if they'll ever recruit like this again in the new setup yeah I don't know I I hope so but this is a loaded team with guys who have played before like if you're going to do it this is the year I just don't I don't I don't buy that nine and three could be looked at as a disappoint it be interesting to see what our audience thinks back in what was it 21 top 10 team to start the year mhm what was the the record s six yeah they lost to and there were some fans saying that that was a successful season some fans said that yeah because they're looking at it in a as a whole Iowa State as a whole they've never I think this team could be that good where you could go nine and three and you're going to be like man missed an opportunity there wow well I mean we we we had him nine and one to start I had him losing the last two games you had him splitting and winning that Kansas State game so let's move on to Iowa we already know Iowa has a loss on the schedule because we have them losing at home to Iowa State in week two now obviously week one's a win so let's just jump right past that Troy any issues there I don't know a lot about Troy other than I don't the Sun Belt they're not going to lose to Troy sneaky good sometimes what do you think at Minnesota but let's start at Minnesota I that's an interesting because it's the first Big 10 game so we got Iowa two and one heading to Minnesota that's a that's going to be a Charged game for Iowa because last year the punt deal right yes now I've never been a big fan of the Iowa Minnesota game I've never really felt like it's much of a Rival Well I mean other than those people that had that the sex in the in the bathroom there those Hawk fans that's a tricky spot though I think at Minnesota to start Big 10 play I like IA a Bounce Back Fence has the boys Circ in the wagons for that one he's usually really good in in these big 10 rivalry games and for that matter every rivalry game because what what has he done against Iowa State lately they've won what eight n or something and the one that Iowa State won was their 4 and8 year with 100 Deckers his quarterback isn't that crazy yeah all the good players that have come through Campbell's a and that's the one isn't that wild wild yeah so are you are you thinking that Minnesota game is a tricky spot okay so Think It's Tricky cuz again like I just like I don't know how much better Iowa's roster is than a program like that right now I know they're really good on defense but like I I was hard to predict because I I want to see their offense right it's it's just I don't know anything about what they're going to look like but I still I will take ference over PJ Flack blindly give me Iowa in that game so we've got Iowa at three in one heading into their first first buy which th this comes at a really good time if you ask me I like this first buy a lot better than Iowa State's first buy because you've got two big 10 Road games to start the conference slate but they're broken up by a bye and then you head to Ohio State now you could argue maybe it'd be better if the buy was after Ohio State yes because you can recover a little bit because that that could take a toll on you Ohio State is potentially the most talented team in the country we've had a look ahead line for that Urban Meers said the most talented team in history he's ever seen yeah uh the line is around 20 points right now yeah I I don't see any way that you could realistically chalk that up as a as a win yeah and like again like it's so hard to analyze much of these I they didn't score against a ranked team last year right no yeah three three games zero points so it's like I I just have no faith no matter what it looks like that they could go in there and win this like zero Faith at All My Hope Is that they just show that they've bridged a gap and they can compete score some points compete maybe be in it in the second half that's all I'm hoping for in that game so that's that's a three and two start by the way Ohio state do we know who they're starting quarterback's going to be at this point will Howard I think he's going to be will Howard do we think he's going to be that good I think what they're hoping for is that he can just get the ball to their Playmakers and don't that's what they were hoping for last year and it wasn't good enough I'm with you Matt that's Ohio State's biggest question mark quarterback right and everyone they got everything else Urban Meyer said it's the most talented roster is he including the quarterback in that I don't know I almost wonder if he's a placeholder until middle of the Year where you it's like Oklahoma bringing in and Caleb Williams and all of a sudden you're like oh where did that guy come from mhm Ben Spencer Rattler who was the preseason Heisman front runner all right so let's move on weird game here I was three and two coming home against Washington which when the schedule came out this seemed like an exciting game but Washington is picked what 10th in the Big 10 so we have a line on this and this line surprised me surprised me too I thought this was going to be at least six no it's four maybe seven and a half Iowa four Iowa minus four at home against Washington Washington has lost everybody everybody that seems like a sucker bet to me and I would play Iowa absolutely yeah I would play Iowa on that I I just I don't think Washington is going to be very good this year plain and simple uh so bounce back there then a trip to Michigan State only tricky cuz it's on the road yes they're not very good I don't think so either well I'll I'll but this is Iowa remember even last year against Michigan State that was a game until the last again like it's just you don't have Deacon Hill and it wasn't we don't have to have this conversation again but like their offense was so poorly designed yeah and then you had this guy who just drops balls like I mean it was such a disaster you you you put Aiden Wyatt in there and they win that game comfortably last year so they win this game I've got them winning it too yeah and then they beat Northwestern the week later you're coming home for Northwestern and you win that game and I I I think they will now you're on a little bit of a run you've one three straight what do we have Matt so right now they're six and two and only one loss in the Big 10 cuz that second here you're you're state in contention and hopefully if you're Iowa Iowa State's having a good year because you're trying to get in that large right yep so Iowa State having a little number next to his name all year will be helpful either way here I think it's less relevant for Iowa State because I don't see them getting an at large and we talked about that it would tendon two get Iowa in if you get blown out by Ohio State and you lose your your your tough non-conference game but in contention very much if they're doing what we think they're going to do and and win those three straight games Washington Michigan State Northwestern you come home for Wisconsin I don't know enough about them I gotta plead ignorance here I me I I old Air Raid Wisconson Luke fickle frent air raid in history but I I I wonder what it will look like in year two I mean they clearly didn't have the guys to do what they wanted last year just they just the Personnel they weren't accurate enough I give me Iowa like I I like Iowa too yeah give me Iowa there it's fence so you got trophy game you know we got him at 7 and2 overall and only one loss in the Big 10 heading on the road so they play at home against Wisconsin on November the 2nd they only have one home game the rest of the way and it's last three games I do too because I think they they'll win at Maryland and I think they'll win at home against Nebraska and where does that leave us Matt that leaves us see with Iowa eight and four or was it uh nine and three you had you guys are both had them at eight and two and going into those last two games yeah cuz the losses are Iowa State Ohio State Ohio State UCLA and then I'm saying they lose to either UCLA Maryland or Nebraska I think they're all similar games they lose one so we have them both at nine three correct nine and three overall which would not be a playoff team and no and two losses in the Big 10 I think that would get them close to second place but not in second place yeah there's going to be some weird tiebreaker what I I don't know I just I feel like the big 10 is just it's so much top heavier than the Big 12 too when we have that conversation right yeah like I just don't see I fully expect Ohio State Oregon State Penn State in in the playoff to have one loss and I think that that Michigan is going to be in the mix as well I don't know that Iowa or USC will were you buying Nebraska I'm buying them being better but like their win total is seven and a half they haven't won six games in a regular season since 2016 I would play the win total over for Iowa Iowa State and Nebraska uh uh so you're going over seven I think Nebraska gets over the hump this year gets to seven or eight wins but I don't think they're going to make some lost them really fast Nebraska yeah real fast we just finished Iowa and Iowa State both nine and three well I have't 10 and two you had Iowa State at 10 and two not making the big 12 Champion Iowa and Iowa State at 9 and three Iowa State winning that shawk game if Iowa State goes 10 and two two big 12 losses they will be in a tiebreaker to go to the big 12 championship game now I don't know if they'll get there but they will be I think so too because I think the Big 12 will cannibalize itself I think so too so here's Nebraska's schedule they start with a win against UTEP they're home against Colorado that's a game they lost last year because they just kept turning it over and turning it over I think that's a win don't you I I I'm not buying Colorado and then Nebraska plays Northern Iowa that's a win 3 and0 home against Illinois win 4-0 now you go to Purdue wi Purdue's is the worst team in the Big 10 Five-0 home against ruter win six and0 at Indiana win s and0 at Ohio State go and put your next paycheck on Nebraska's win total telling you but then things get really really difficult really tricky here with the rest of the way you're at 7 and0 but you go to Ohio State L loss home against UCLA win 81 at USC loss 8-2 home against Wisconson win nine wins going to Iowa and I think that's a coin toss game I actually would say Wisconsin's probably a coin toss game too right it's at Nebraska but yeah could be I mean what does Nebraska I I think they'll win looking at the schedule and what they'll start we I feel like we say this every year with Nebraska they're going to be S and0 and then what and then they start real Coach they'll trip up against Colorado and they'll they'll do something crazy at Indiana they have like a real Coach who's establishing an actual program now like that like listen I'm not a big Matt rule guy I don't think he's going to win a championship there but I I think he's good enough where there's a reason everybody wanted him he's good enough and the schedule is soft enough to start it's just so backloaded you know what sucks for Iowa in this deal is that if that freshman quarterback is as good as they think the festar kid you face him at the end of the year yeah he's going to be better yeah you know that that's not a great placement for Iowa we could also make the argument that that kid's got to go to kinnick stadium for a night game on NBC on November 29th that's a tough environment for a freshman that's right it's a night game on Black matched up almost identical to the top 10 that I gave Wisconsin is ranked seventh in this poll so that that is a quint toss game in Lincoln I don't think it was fair of me to just win loss that as quickly as I did I think the most underrated team in the Big 10 is Maryland at number 11 I think the most overrated team in the Big 10 might be Washington at number 10 or potentially Wisconsin or USC it might be USC it might be USC at 6 it's not easy to switch conferences guys I thought that the that the USC was going to be ahead of Iowa in this poll it was it was very close but Iowa who do you think is USC most overrated I think yes if you're going to pick a team how how do we know like how the travel is going to work for these it's still a lot oh my God like I know that they are well they've got a few Partners but like we don't like know how this is going to impact these teams we've never seen it Maddie pull up Oregon's schedule real quick if you don't mind or USC it doesn't matter I'd just be anxious to see how many CrossCountry trips these schools have where then they come back and like if you're USC you got to go to Ann Arbor you come home they've done a pretty good job of keeping them without having two Rogue games in a row it's we don't know you know two of their road trips are Pack 12 teams though Washington what about Oregon can you pull up orgon they don't play Oregon what a travesty these these conferences are too big brother Oregon where are their road trips look at Oregon plays Oregon State week three UCLA so that's not bad they got to go to two Perdue at Michigan at Wisconsin yeah they don't make a a road trip outside of the West Coast until going to Purdue October 18th but I I mean I've seen this in a very much lighter stin but the West Virginia coaches complained about this a lot when they were the only team out east in the Big 12 about and and I've I've taken that harder flight many times when you're doing women's basketball and you're you're getting home at 2 in the morning like it it's not an easy flight on those like prop planes and stuff now football's different they're in like real Jets and stuff but like it's a real my whole thing is like at the end those those schedules don't look too bad but I think it'll wear on these teams more than we think think about this not too long ago just to I don't know 10 years ago 15 years ago Iowa was about the farthest West Big 10 school yeah and now Nebraska and four more schools in the Pack 12 well that's when before we knew the setup of this I was worried for remember I last year I was in Iowa City doing some health stuff with my kid and I was with some people from the athletic department and they were worried that they were going to get put in like a pod yeah oh god with Nebraska and all the Pack 12 schools how awful would that be oh terrible if that's the six team pod yeah so this worked out good for Iowa now you get those three big 10 West games yeah like that's not a bad situation at all could have been way worse all right so it sounds like we're going to have a couple very successful Seasons I can't wait let's go although you you're trying to claim that unless Iowa State goes to the playoff it's just people are going to be pissed nine and three that's not good enough for our fan base uh I think everything's different now with this new league I think with the team you have coming back with the new league I think expectations are considerably higher for Iowa State football isn't that a good thing that's a good thing but come on if you go nine and three nobody should be disappointed I don't disagree with You Chris I'm saying I've been around fans a long time well what was one of them right over there van wink said he said exactly what I told you they they are not putting as much time into these bowl games other than Iowa of course I think another K fence was you know he wouldn't fire Brian or he wouldn't we're not going to replace him until after because the bull champion I ship we were playing for a bold Championship you it started with guys opting out of of bowl games and I I think also you're going to have to start worrying down the road if a team gets if a team like Ohio state gets eliminated from playoff contention early do some of the players bow out early this is why we need these nil deals that are inh housee to be a contract that they have to play to get the money they have to play in games cu the games have to matter yeah if you're if you're a big brand team that has a really disappointing season and it's like what what what do we have to play for now it's just like the NFL it's like I believe in tanking like I do like I I it drives me nuts I think the Vikings have been mediocre my whole life because they never have really good draft picks they're always right there right in the middle you know I believe in tanking but in the NFL if they were doing that like do you know how much revenue they would lose if these teams just quit and there's nothing in college football to stop them from doing it not yet what we're seeing it though like where these coaches are just getting fired in the middle of the year now because they want to get a head start I I i' never felt worse that that that blll game last year that third trip to Memphis I felt like like it was fun I like going to that bowl game like it it was fine and I'm glad they were playing in a bull nobody thought they would be but I felt like it didn't matter at all and really it didn't I mean they lost the game it does not change your trajectory at all for this year fans were just mad for like two days and then it was a over on to basketball like it did not matter it's an exhibition game yes a bad one at that it's an exhibition game with half of your players playing while the other team is treating it like a huge game you know Memphis had all their guy like and and they got absolutely beat up in that game it was obvious one school cared about that game a lot more than the other one did and it's just like for me why are we sending five people to cover this like we used to even you're going to be seeing less and less of that yeah I mean it's hard to bowl games might not go away but they'll continue to be become more and more irrelevant yeah because of this expanded playoff you got people over there like van Winks all he cares about the playoff now it used to be about trying to I remember January bowl game when we all got to go down to s San Antonio for Iowa State's when they played leech in the Almo bowl that was a major deal for that institution that was always a bar that paard set we want to play in the AL Bowl because it's such a great game like Iowa fans have been down there it's an amazing atmosphere that was such a big deal and I just don't feel like it would be anymore like that like I and that and that's why I don't blame a guy like Matt though cuz it's like if you're reaching for something now like what are we whatever like those [ __ ] guys were playing like it was the Super Bowl like it meant everything for them to be playing in that game and now like these guys who aren't even NFL guys they're like yeah we just my agent told me not to do it you know trying to get on this XFL team he just doesn't matter it's uh it's changed a lot in 20 years and it's changed a lot you just referenced the Alam from what five years ago it's changed a lot quick and are we Boomers where we going to be at 5 years from now are we Boomers we're getting close this conversation does it make us Boomers okay Boomer Matt
