Frank Dolce former Utah quarterback Frank good morning good morning Frank one game down 11 to go maybe more to go but one down 11 to go and I wondered if you learned anything from the first one or if there were just so many big plays and broken coverages and guys running free down the field it really just didn't tell you much of anything yeah I think it's it's probably the lad I don't know that we learned too much I I will say coming out of this like cam cam looked solid like he didn't you know it was a good opener for him and he looked like he was fully in in control of the game without much pressure and he and he moved around well I thought that was very encouraging so and and keithy you know that's the other thing keithy looked like he's doing well off of the injury I think that was a big question mark So Good Start for a few of those guys uh and the defense was you know I think the defense is as advertised I I I will say I probably came out with a couple questions or maybe questions weren't answered that I had going into this game specifically at the line of scrimmage on the offensive line and in the running back position yeah I think they're going to need to find their way a little bit more with running back I think eventually they'll get it because I think the way the schedule works out they'll have what I think will be fairly easy wins the first three games and then by the time they get to Oklahoma State and then following up with Arizona they'll have a much better idea of what they're doing the schedule really sets up for them nice I think it's an easy schedule and only playing two ranked teams and getting them right off the bat and that allowed you to build some momentum with the non-conference and then into those two games and then I man I just if they go 5 and0 it's crazy but I don't know if I see them losing I don't know if they can beat both Oklahoma State and Arizona but if they do and they are Five-0 I'm not sure who beats them the rest of the way I like the schedule I I agree with you I like the schedule and I I I agree those are the two as I as I look across it I think those are the two most difficult um and that's those are kind of backto back so but I but this is a football team when you bring a defense like that it's just going to be really it should be really difficult for opponents to score and that causes frustration for opposing teams and it you know it potentially makes for a long day on the field for opposing teams defensively which which should give Utah more opportunities offensively so yeah I think it will I yeah I think that the way that the defense lines up as we've seen on in in lots of scenarios under coach Whittingham like the defense kind of carries the team for a few weeks not not that the offense is is playing poorly but it takes the offense just a little bit longer to get into Rhythm how many times have we gone into a season and it's been three maybe four games in and we're still saying well who's going to be the number one running back you know who's going to be the guy that's carrying the ball 20 or 25 times a game and certainly coming out of this one I don't think we've determined who that is you've watched him a lot uh through high school so how was Wilson and what do you think if they need him for a quarter or a game not against Oklahoma State but maybe against one of these other teams that we think they're going to beat can you do enough there cuz last year they didn't have enough a quarterback to win the league but they had enough a quarterback to beat two-thirds of the teams on their schedule there's been a lot of there's been a lot of hype around Isaac Wilson and that's that's difficult to manage and I think it felt to me like Isaac wanted to come out and make a splash and he was just not he was clearly not comfortable in the in the situation so but the best thing that happened for him is that he got to go out and be uncomfortable in that situation with the with a lead and an opportunity to make some mistakes that weren't to the detriment of the team so he'll learn a ton from that he'll learn about the speed of the game and making decisions and making being more efficient with the football and so I have I I have a lot of faith that that this learning exp experience is going to be extremely valuable as as we move forward Isaac showed some things I think that were very positive his good arm strength certainly the athleticism uh if he can be a little more calm a little more present in the in the pocket in the game I think he's going to be fine but it's going to take him I mean he's just a freshman and it's going to take him a few series to to get the hang of it now if if Utah can develop a run game and before you really need an Isaac Wilson that's that's going to be supremely important if Isaac Wilson has a run game behind him then I think you can say well yeah yeah Isaac's a guy that can come in and win games for Utah if he doesn't have a run game behind him and it's all on his shoulders he certainly has a lot of weapons but he's going to have to mature very quickly I I don't think he's quite there yet yeah I think it's uh something that's going to have to be wait and see if he's needed this year they're in trouble and then there's going to be a line out the door of transfer quarterbacks who want to come to Utah for next season so who knows who's even going to be on the roster you know they made a big deal about the throw game Kyle saying it'll go through Dorian singer and you know he had the big year two years ago but then I watch and what do I see oh only what I've seen for multiple years rising to the tight end and in this case it's keithy before we know it was the other guys playing for the Buffalo Bills King Kade and I'm wondering you as a former quarterback once you have that comfortability and confidence in in particular person I don't think it was just by accident that he throws three touchdown passes to keithy in the first half when those guys played and then they didn't much play after that because there is the comfortability factor and I expect to see the same thing even if it's at the expense of the wide receivers because Rising knows where keithy is knows he's going to get open knows he's going to catch the ball and all that stuff and so that's what I expect at the end of the season the tight end is going to be the leading receiver in terms of yards received and all that stuff and total catches so I not that I didn't believe coach Whittingham when he said the passing game was going to run through singer but I didn't really believe the statement that the passing game was going to run through singer and cam rising's success in this offense has been built around the good running game behind him the ability to run from the quarterback position and manage the game and throwing the ball to the tight end group like those are those are the top three things for the success of Cam rising in this offense so him coming off of injury maybe having a little bit of doubt you know some of the butterflies that he hasn't necessarily experienced for a long time of course he's going to go back to his guy that you know has been so solid and so meaningful in the passing game I hope that as this goes on and and cam continues to build confidence with this offense now he's only had practice time with this new wide receiver group not necessarily new but some pieces new in the wide receiver group he's had lots of time in game situations with the tight end group and brt keithy so over time in game scenarios I hope the passing game evolves into utilizing the wide receivers more regularly as well as the tight ends I don't think he's ever going to go away from the tight end as his safety net and it would be crazy to do that because they're it's such a good group but that position group hard to tell after one game I think it I certainly think it can evolve and I think this is one of the problems with money games that's why I asked you what I asked you first how many times in your career did you throw a couple of 70 yard touchdown passes to the running back neither one of which went more than like four yards down field but one time the linebacker supposed to make the play runs into his teammate it was a well done pick play and the other time like they just two guys went with one guy and nobody went with a running back and so D's just taken off down the sideline if he gets bumped out of bounds after a 10 or 12 yard gain that was my point about this game doesn't tell you anything suu just didn't put up enough of a fight because what would have happened on the next play would we start to see the mistake establish a running game we see him throw to singer but because some dudes running 70 yards for a touchdown they're just standing on the sideline at 35 nothing Kyle pulls him out so yeah what did we get out of that yeah no nothing I mean I can remember two guys Keith Williams we were we were playing Nebraska and I was running for my I was like running for my life most of the game and and all of a sudden I'm running around like what what am I going to do and there all of a sudden there's Keith Williams standing there all by himself like right right over the line so I just I just dumped in the ball and then there was no one guarding him and so then he took off and he ran for about that like you know 60 or 70 yard play and then and then Steve Abrams against Utah State in Logan he ran a little wheel route but but he was like it wasn't like he was running by himself there was a s there was a strong safety that was covering him and we just happened to hit it and then he scored he scored a big touchdown those are the only two in my career that I can remember I I watched I watched cam Rising hit some of those guys and I was like man how would it be to be able to throw a pass like that the guy standing all by himself so that's that's the thing you just you don't learn much out of a game like this Utah did what it should have done came out with a nice win everything looks solid a lot of stuff to build on but you just need to have you need to be under Fire to really understand which position groups are going to perform in those situations and I think for me I I'll go back to this again is okay is the offensive line there and or how long is it going to take to the offensive line to get there especially in the Run game I was I was kind of hoping that Utah would run for 300 yards like just dominate the line of scrimmage and then and then which you know which of the running backs is going to emerge as the guy you worked the Utah State game and that was an interesting game oh with the quarterback situation there go ahead I'm so glad I'm so glad you brought that up because we're we're up there and and of course you know Utah State goes out middle of the second quarter starting quarterback gets hurt and L and beh told who trots into the football game at quarterback I don't know who for Utah State that was one Bryson Barnes and and I made the comment on the air about Bryson Barnes there is no quarterback in the country who is more capable of managing this particular situation than Bryson Barnes his whole career has been built on coming coming in for an outstanding injured starting quarterback and being productive and and then he had a couple rough series and then all of a sudden he was Bryson Barnes again I mean he's running like a 65 yard touchdown he's scrambling around he's dumping the ball off and then he leads the Aggies to an opening week Victory so I was very happy for for Bryson I got to CH I got a chance to chat with him before the game and I said to him you know are hey how does it look are you going to get some reps today and he just said you know I'll probably get some reps and and that's exactly how it worked out he sure did would you switch quarterbacks or would you uh stay with petus petrius has a big arm petrius has a big arm uh he looks very comfortable in the pocket I don't know what that lower leg injury looks like he was in a boot on the sidelines I think based on the game Bryson Barnes brings an extra element to to that quarterback position like he's not the 65 stand in the pocket rifle the ball downfield but he's gritty and he's Scrappy and he will he'll break out of the pocket he'll avoid a sack he'll pick up five or 10 yards yards or 65 yards and and then he'll lower his shoulder and get a first down like I think Bryson Barnes brings something to the quarterback position that petus doesn't have so I don't know I don't know that's a to me that's a very difficult decision I thought I thought Bryson made an excellent case for earning the starting spot I played a lot of sports in my life and have done a lot of running but I've never run for my life how does that feel it feels like everything that people describe like just imagine running for your life like you know a big some big animals running after you and if you don't escape then you're you know then you're going to meet an early demise like you run like that like no there's nothing in your way that can stop you from getting away from that or people say I was running like my hair was on fire like that's the same thing like you feel like your head is on fire like I'm just I have to put this out the only way I can do that is to run as fast as I can and it's a little bit like it's not very controlled in that scenario like you're just running and and trying to get with with everything you have trying to get away from the impending doom so I yeah I've had that experience a few times in my life and and you know the other thing it's like you know what it feels like like you know when people complete like there's a real sense of satisfaction when you complete a marathon or you do the idod and you cross the finish line like this enormous physical endurance Laden experience that you have these obstacles that you overcame and near-death experiences once you get done running for your life you get up and you head back to the huddle with a completely different perspective on life because because you made it I didn't understand you were talking about I didn't understand anything you were talking about until you brought up the idid rod and growing up in San Diego I can totally relate to that now I grasp it I think I did that one time i' the closest I've CA I've come to running for my life involved an ex-boyfriend of of a lady yeah so you know I mean you you know how that goes especially especially if the you know if the ex-boyfriend maybe had had some sort of claim like wait should that's not really my exgirlfriend like I'm not I don't feel like I'm an ex what happened and now you're in the picture right right yeah and so that that could be a situation where you're running for your life and then you know and he may have heard a sarcastic comment to prompt him to oh I I can't I can't I can imagine I can imagine that coming you know something when you have when you have the wit and a sharp tongue like you can't hold it you can't hold it back even if you find yourself running for your life at some point you have to get you have to it it just dances on your tongue you can't keep it in and and then you find yourself running for your life that's how it goes Frank we appreciate it as always we didn't spend a lot of time on the bayor bears but my guess is watching them uh destroy Tarlton State didn't teach you anything anyway so we'll all find out together yeah I I think so too I I think the Baylor's going to have a much more difficult time obviously scoring against this Utah defense I'm hoping Utah offensively can crank up the Run game a little bit more and so we feel uh you know more of a comfort level heading into into week three about about where this Utah offense is headed But A Good Start never nevertheless a good start against Southern Utah thanks Frank thanks you guys Frank Dolce former Utah quarterback David smoke host of 365 Sports in wo Texas we'll find out what he's figured out about the Bears after winning their money game and their
