Police officers shot in east Charlotte

keep that in mind this is the tweet that they just put out right now SWAT team on scene continued to work through the incident this is still an active scene so please avoid the area a lot of traffic uh situations as we not yet into Rush Hour KJ but we can see the effects here early on in the afternoon with all these closures that are going to uh really have an impact later on uh certainly Jane and keep in mind that school is about to let out here perhaps in the next half hour so going to add to that so I wouldn't be surprised if they keep the kids and keep the buses in place um a little bit longer before getting on the roads and going into some of these neighborhoods but right now just to give you a look right notice we talked about this about the map turning purple so you can see right here a section of I77 is not purple this row is shut down temporarily right now this is I77 as you continue to make your way you know when you're on the interstate and you can see B of America Stadium this section of 77 has since been shut down police are using their Cruisers to block off the roads and take a look at the live pictures now so even the traffic that's moving away from the city southbound traffic you can see um this is touch and go slow traffic moving away from the city so this is having a ripple effect for incoming and outgoing traffic right now due to this emergency situation and right over here where my hand is uh my finger is pointing police are using their Cruisers to block uh the traffic that's coming into Charlotte notice uh traffic right there not even moving at all uh so you want to avoid the freeways for now uh due to this ongoing situation as they are making way for those emergency vehicles to get to the hospital system to kind of uh reduce uh some of the impact out there as they continue with this ongoing investigation with this breaking uh news happening right now uh Jane um but we'll send it back to you but I do want to show you the map here let me just move it a little bit here in the center um but you can see we do have very very slow traffic for incoming and outgoing on I77 and we just got a new alert here so even some of these uh roads that attached to 74 uh 77 notice we're seeing the orange that's an indicator that we do have touch and go uh traffic so a little and go also coming on from 74 as well as getting on uh to 77 so the map will continue to update what looks to be green not so green out there so be mindful um of slow traffic for this afternoon KJ I mean we can really see the 77 that already impacted it's not moving look like it's stop and go yet it's at closure 77 North at uh at Belk so right there at Bank of America Stadium right there at Bank of America Stadium and the traffic uh certainly goes all the way back down to woodon Road and of course as this continues perhaps in next half hour that traffic is going to be extended so right now we're not seeing any traffic that's moving into the city on I77 uh Northbound right now because police have their Cruisers blocking off this road traffic trying to leave the city and notice on the on wrap to 77 uh southbound just really really touch and go not moving on of course everyone's trying to figure out what's happening that and of itself is going to slow down traffic just trying to figure out what's going on so we're not seeing any incoming traffic into the city now so that is of course it's going to uh cause a lot of backup out there for this afternoon absolutely K Jay thank you I know you're monitoring that situation uh let me regroup here and and start from the beginning if you are just joining us this happened about an hour ago we just got word of this not even an hour ago I want to show you where this is take a look at this map this is an ongoing situation this happening on the 5,000 block of gallway drive that's just south of Milton Road this is what we know so far we are hearing reports of shots being fired at officers we do know that uh cmpd has confirmed law enforcement officers have been shot uh also there are significant road closures including the interstates and we have uh a neighborhood that's being involved here gallway drive just south of Milton Road we have many crews heading to the scene but uh just got to note here that cmpd does not want media near the scene as this is an active situation uh gun fire still being reported through that area and so there is a staging area that our media crews are heading to we also have a crew heading to uh some of the area hospitals that we hear some of the injured U victims may be transported to let's go over to our Twitter uh where cnpd posted a couple of tweets here first of all uh this is just a couple of minutes ago cmpd SWAT team is on scene continuing to work through the incident this is still an active scene please avoid the area so that's SWAT team that posted about 5 minutes ago also uh 5 minutes uh couple minutes no not let me take that back let's go back to 12 minutes ago cmpd confirming numerous Law Enforcement Officers struck by gunfire in active situation in the 5,000 block of gallway Drive the scene is still active avoid the area many roads closed for faster ambulance transport please cooperate with authorities we are waiting to get our media crew uh to that media staging area to learn more uh to learn how many officers were shot and the status of their condition uh we are also working to learn who and what started this shooting if there are any uh suspects in custody or what's being done there on gallway drive in this neighborhood in East Charlotte uh right now we are trying to get our crews in a safe position uh so we are showing you the cell video that have right now as you can see the units are driving by very quickly uh medic also confirming that they were there on scene and uh cmpd asking everyone if you are in the area please remain in your residence or steer clear of the scene so if you have any plans to head that way uh do not go to that area south of Milton Road we are just getting word that the Gold Line is now seeing delays because of emergency vehicles so really in and out of this area going to find a transportation affected traffic is affected uh some businesses will be affected here and although we have not heard that this is an official lockdown uh with cmpd warning people to just stay inside their homes this is probably the best bet uh this is a tweet from the Charlotte area transit system uh looking at their bus but but they're saying that the Gold Line is affected right now bringing in uh Colin Mayfield here to join me as we are breaking into regular programming uh Colin this happened not even an hour ago at least reports uh across our newro and across the scanners that we were hearing about shots being fired in this neighborhood just coming together we're just piecing this together right now as gway Avenue right 5,000 block uh on my way in on 77 there is a traffic jam you have Cruisers flying by on each side of the roadway so be careful if you are headed towards Uptown and there's extremely amount of people you know as we head into the afternoon hours now headed towards Uptown and then out of Uptown there are a lot of issues yeah this is the 77 closure uh that you're seeing but I I can tell you I passed no less than 15 different patrol cars and that's on the Outer Loop 4 I me and it was amazing too because we're looking at the the scene where where the original reports of shots being fired gway Drive south of Milton Road in East Charlotte and then we're hearing that 77 is closed and we're looking at the map and saying that's ways away even down by Uptown the neighborhood they have they have numerous roads closed um and as you've reported I've been listening to on my way in uh Jane they're trying to get uh these individuals officers potentially right to the hospital it seems like that so um that would seem this the quickest routes as you can see medic just flying through here and I think that's the Cruisers that I saw on the on the Outer Loop and and 77 trying to get to Uptown and trying to move people away because as I said as we head into this afternoon time here in Charlotte a lot of people are are going to be heading out and uh KJ mentioned that school is letting out as well so B reason U really if you do not need to go anywhere it is best you stay inside your home uh do not even try to hit that 77 right now if you can avoid that area as well because this looks to be like it's going to be in effect for much of the afternoon we're going to sit with this uh and try to learn more as we gather more information passing along to you but we have several Crews headed to various parts of the city to try to gather some information here and it sounds like thanks to our producers in the background who are doing so much work a tedious work it sounds like CMS they're trying to get more information trying to get uh make sure that this is not an issue that stops kids from going home so we're trying to get more information from CMS as I said buses probably rolling out already I saw numerous buses in the Pineville area uh and those CMS schools in the South End in the outer districts uh in the outer district there trying to get kids to and from home and this this is going to be an issue so just please stay off the roads if you can give them some space a very active scene everyone's trying to learn more we've reached out we have uh our own network and we've reached out to US Marshals as well as uh CMS and other agencies to gather uh more information to pass along to you this is a public safety matter this uh an officer involves shooting now and and now we're hitting into yeah parts of the day where they're going to have more people on the road more people people uh running around after school activities and as we take a look right now at 77 you can see at least one lane of traffic is getting through there uh that was shut down for a time with uh SWAT on scene 77 right at Bank of America State at the Bel freeway there's a lot lot of homes in this area this is a residential neighborhood so I'm sure folks that are going to be coming from home from work going to be wondering what happened right so uh we have confirmed from police this is an active scene in the 5,000 block of gallway Drive the scene as you will see and as we continue to say is still active cmpd is asking everyone please avoid the area until we have more information on what's going on there's an active investigation as you can tell going on in this area many roads are going to be continue to be closed uh as we go through the afternoon hours heading now into the evening portion at some point but there is a staging um going to be a media staging area we hope to learn more information from cmpd but the has really just trickled down um you said it happened about an hour ago yeah I mean I started seeing the the threat of communication within our own Newsroom at 138 uh we heard you know just sort of the the chatter on the scanners and as we were working to confirm what was happening and reaching out to cmpd as well as US Marshals and the DA's office and other agencies uh were cmpd getting on social media and posting some of the the things that they can mostly to warn people to stay away from gallway Drive 5,000 block gallway Drive south of Milton Road there in in East Charlotte it looks like cmpd posted 45 minutes ago it w it went out as a severe alert with this active investigation in the north Tron division but as you can see you know like you said 77 Uptown Independence is now affected uh and that is really going to put a pinch on the drive for people just hitting the roads wondering why are they stuck in traffic at this hour well and this is not good for you know leading into a big big weekend we've got huge events huge events coming up this weekend we've got a huge Music Fest down in uptown I think it's living life right um and then there's numerous other events I think FC is in town so not a great week with Crews kind of spread across the area as officers trying to figure out what happened here all right we have our Jesse Pierre who just got on scene of the media staging area uh Jesse what can you tell us at this hour well details right now are very limited but what we do know is that multiple sworn officers have been hurt shot and taken to the hospital now we are at the staging area and cmpd right now is really urging folks to stay away from the area now this happened on gway Drive near Julian Underwood Park not far from the intersection of Plaza the plaza and mil mil Road I spoke to a gentleman who said that he's been trying to get home he says that there is a lot of uh police cars police officers in the area even driving over here I saw several officers or patrol cars pass me by an ambulance Pass Me By so this is an active shooting uh incident going on right now and cmpd is asking folks to stay away from the area to stay home if you're home um you know right here we are pretty far from the scene but again uh cmpd really just urging folks to stay away from the area we do know again that multiple officers have been taken to the hospital we do not know the condition of those officers at this time um but cmpd just asking folks to work with them to make way for those who are working for police officers for ambulances stay off the road and to stay off the area sending it back to you all right Jesse thank you so much for that information we'll come back to you as soon as we can and hopefully you learn more information from police again as she said an active scene I'm looking at at the map on Google Maps right now which anyone can do at home uh but I can see definitely they're they're on East Sugar Creek Road um it is pretty bad so again avoid this area they have shut down as you kind talking about dens in place kind of the streets around this neighborhood to continue this investigation seems that they've set a perimeter around whatever's going on this this active investigation you you made it over here just in time uh Colin look at that 77 you said that uh emergency crews were just passing you by well there's been a traffic yeah there's been a I think a uh an accident that popped up a crash oh in addition near Uptown SWAT which is yeah I think why it's uh you know creating an issue here so and you guys can really see um this section of 77 right at the connection with 277 notice the purple shade in here this is highlighting this road is still shut down um I know one lane has since been reopened on a section um of 77 to 27 7 but for the most part traffic is still at pretty much a standstill at this time especially the Northbound section I'm going to scroll down just a little bit taking you on the south end I widen out the shot just so you can get an idea of where I'm at uh take a look where the start of the slowdowns are happening this is going to take us all the way back down to Tyvola Road in 77 so if you're starting to work towards the city traffic is still at a g lock on this section Northbound 77 we're getting closer to the city now and you can see this Loop this perimeter around the city this is 277 numerous rows are shut down take a look within the city within 277 notice the purple shading several streets are now blocked off um I'll take you over to 77 this is Independence um and notice this is also slow stop and go sections of 74 um uh not moving so even though this event happened in East Charlotte it is certainly having a ripple effect on our major rows running through the Queen City on this afternoon just really allowing for these um emergency vehicles to be able to get to where they need to get to as quickly as possible um in this situation yes Jan can you are you able to show us where the incident is and compare it to the thing Jane um the reports are coming in in terms of um gallway being shut down um so we have uh Lane restriction traffic delays uh Sugar Creek Road at Eastway Drive um police situation nearby shanning house drive as well um gallway Drive between Aaron Brook Lane and Ruth Drive um you are advised to avoid this area um because of the police presence and also we have um because of this situation on the Plaza um traffic it's also being redirected um this is over near Eastway Drive so it's not highlighted here on the map but those areas are also impacted uh severely due to this ongoing situation in East Charlotte such a quick response relatively to all what was happening you know getting emergency crews uh getting them the the room to move around but yeah that definitely impacts uh these wide areas I mean you we stretch out to 77 277 485 Loop and uh it it's definitely putting the pinch on everything right now uh we are waiting to hear from CMS about school um School release how how they're impacted if at all right um as well as Jesse Pierre you saw there just a few moments ago on scene trying to gather more information uh we're waiting for the public information officer from cmpd right to let us know U what they can so yeah we've only got that this is around the 5,000 block of gallway this is kind of close to the Charlotte Museum of History if you know where that is uh here in Charlotte so it's close to that I would say within a mile or so less than a mile uh but we've reached out to US Marshals this is what we know at this point there are report reports that they were serving a domestic violence warrant when this happened about an hour or so ago again these are just reports at least right now we are working to confirm details but cmpd at least says to us that there is an active investigation on 5000 gallway Drive uh we don't know much more than that obviously with the police presence it's warranted a very strong uh presence a very Fierce and quick so um understandably so it's something's very serious all right looking at 7 7 once again Colin was caught in it we're getting word from some of our own co-workers that roads in their neighborhood are uh affected or closed and they won't be getting to the station anytime soon but you can see that the drive is just at a standstill yeah uh that picture has been that picture now for the last 10 minutes at least 77 completely blocked this is just outside of Uptown uh by Belk freeway hey J I have some go KJ specific on the exit so we have I77 Northbound Road close at Exit 9 uh I 277 to exit 10 uh nc16 and I 277 Road close from exit 1D Carson Boulevard to exit 1A I77 uh so this could certainly change um as perhaps one or more Lanes begin to reopen over time but right now not only this section but we do have numerous roads um closed we have delays traffic is being redirected we have an update that we just got confirmed it sounds like from the US Marshalls task force comprised of officers from multiple agencies they were conducting an investigation in the 5,000 block of gallway drive when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital the cmpd SWAT team is currently on the scene that is just into the news room they just posted that on social media two minutes ago that is the latest update that we have uh incredible we still don't know how many officers yeah I said it was serious I didn't know it was that serious um but yeah this is a very active scene right now yeah um thinking about those officers right now absolutely we're looking here's oh this is Atria main we're getting told this is Atria main right now people are being taken you can you can see they're cordoning off making sure they can get these officers to the hospital as quickly as possible if they're not already there I would say they probably already are but we that's just speculation at this point still trying to get more information but again us Marshall's task force comp uh compromised of multiple agencies officers from multiple different agencies were conducting an investigation in the area of gallway Drive F 5000 uh that 5,000 block we've been talking about really since the start of this they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject so that's what they were dealing with multiple law enforcement officers have been struck and now they are either on the way to the hospital or already there all right that statement right is on the screen right now so uh posted at 2:44 so three minutes ago um and that they have been struck being transported to the hospital like you said Colin if they're not there already yeah um cmpd SWAT team currently on scene we have we're waiting to learn to see if the we assume that the the scene itself is still active gunfire was reported uh and that's why they're keeping media away from the scene and keeping them ways away uh at a staging area so our crews are trying to uh position themselves in a safe position where they can also get some information and show some of the the pictures the street closures that a lot of people are be going to be dealing with for Mo for probably the rest of the day well and we've we've we've said we've been reaching out to CMS right now right to see how this is going to impact kids going home right now is the perfect time where kids are already being let out or already have been let out around the buses this is going to impact people throughout the area so if you're leaving Uptown and you're switch this on or you're wondering maybe what's going on um there's there's a heavy police presence around and it's not like I said as I was coming in it's not just uh in uptown or on east side of Charlotte I was seeing Cruisers around 150 when I was dropping my son off uh out in Ballentine speeding on 485 456 at a time um so I knew something was was serious at that I I would imagine the response is massive and we're going to get a lot of uh divisions I mean it was the north Trion division originally reporting the severe alert about an hour ago that this active investigation was taking place in the 5,000 block of gallway Drive uh a neighborhood but as you as you said US Marshals were were there on scene and the task force there when they came under gunfire so this major response uh now happening as you can see on the map there gallway drive around Milton Road and and Denson all right let's uh Jesse Pierre is out at the staging area still awaiting more information from cmpd hopefully we'll we'll get or hear from them in the next hour or so but Jesse can you kind of set the scene for us where you're at and what you've seen so far well I'm here at the Family Dollar and that's where cnpd has all of media staged right now and even just being here off of the plaza I've seen several like officers pass by uh police cars passing by really fast and an ambulance or two um overall the message right now from cmpd is for folks to stay away from the immediate area um you know you're going to have officers um in and out you're going to have ambulances in and out and they want to make sure that the roads stay clear on top of that you will see several road closures so you know so that there's no uh so you trying to we're trying to avoid any backing up of different areas of cars and traffic so again the message right now because it is an active uh situation right now is for folks to stay safe to stay away from here again so this happened on gway Drive near Julian Underwood Park not far from the intersection of the plaza and Milton Road um right now you know in our area we're just waiting to hear from cmpd so we can get more details but we do know multiple officers have been shot and taken to the hospital so cmpd says the way you can help is by staying away from the roadways away from the immediate areas so that the ambulances and as well as police cars can get away um can you be can have clear ways to get where they need to go so again that's a message from cnpd this is an active situation stay away from the area um and that's what we have right now we're waiting to hear from cmpd and hopefully we'll get more details on what is going on here live out here Jesse sending it back to you Jesse thank you so much uh we'll come back to you soon at some point we were just kind of looking at the the AP finally putting out a story about this so obviously it's made national news at this point cmpd is asking the media they just put this out on Twitter there's a media staging I won't say the the specific address we have it but it says please do not go to the scene as it is still active cmpd SWAT sounds like they are still on scene please continue to avoid this area and expect delays until further notice I was just commenting to you I think it could be a while that we could be here especially with this type of situation oh this is a very delicate situation we want to uh everybody cmpd can't urge enough right right to have people media children you're walking your dog just stay away if you're inside your home stay inside your home if you need to hit the road um you can delay it for a while longer uh that would probably be best we need to let the emergency crews and the investigators and authorities do the work that they need to do while keeping everyone safe and this is still an active situation as a gunfire has pretty much just erupted in that neighborhood I can't imagine what the neighbors across the street or you know right next door I know we normally say something like this happens right but this isn't normal uh especially when multiple law enforcement officers are not only shot at but shot themselves um so we're we're in a different different hour at this moment uh KJ can we check traffic with you I see some issues that are really popping up one of them being an Eastway Drive there's numerous accidents there exactly uh Colin Jane uh right now so we do have those ongoing Lane restrictions and we expect more of them to begin to pop up this is going to be a ripple effect across some of those roads some of those neighborhood roads uh right now we have some Lane restrictions roads are blocked um by police cars right now uh Randolph Road Colonia Avenue uh cwell Road uh these are some of those roads um right here in South uh Charlotte you can see highlighted let me just grab something here just to uh highlight where I'm at uh notice right in here uh this is going towards the city so primarily the roads that are incoming to Charlotte um moving inbound if I may um a lot of these roads are going to be uh blocked um and traffic will be redirected uh So to avoid that you're asked to uh stay put and don't try and make your way uh towards uh Charlotte uptown at this time um as police are blocking offroads making way um for the emergency vehicles we're told uh taking a look now take you back to see if there is any changes on I77 not seeing any changes at all uh traffic is still stop and go for I77 and really um this section of I77 uh right at 277 uh through Uptown passing the stadium the stadium is right there so you know when you're on I77 you can look over and see the stadium uh to your East you can't see it traffic this section of I77 is blocked um and this particular Road here uh this is going to take you um not too far from uh Billy ground Parkway so a section of bilig ground Parkway is now stop and go so I imagine traffic is trying to redirect and so as it does it's going to cause roads that are typically not blocked uh to have stop Ando traffic so once again it will be a ripple effect across the city at this time serious serious stuff uh KJ it's starting to Ripple as you said a ripple effect as we head now almost into the 3 o'l hour and this could continue into the evening because how of how serious this is so let's just catch you up with some of the information uh that we have at this time cnpd putting out that the US Marshals task force uh they were out there serving I believe a a warrant from this compromise of officers from multiple agencies they were conducting an investigation excuse me in the area that's what it says uh on their statement of the 5,000 block of gallway drive you can read along with me there if you'd like they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by that gunfire and are being transported to the hospital C PD SWAT is on the scene it sounds like this is a very active scene still um and it and it sounds like you know folks were rushed as fast as possible to the hospital in this situation we're looking at a map right now this happening around 1:30 this afternoon so an hour and a half or so ago uh on the 5,000 block of gallway Drive south of Milton Road that's just north of Denson uh in East Charlotte a lot of Roads as you have heard and as you can imagine are closed some of the big ones Independence 77 East way does not look good either East way yeah um just be aware that traffic is really snarled and I'm looking at just tweets from people saying that they got onto the plaza and are wondering why they're in in traffic and here's the cmpd tweet that the uh scene is still active this was just put out as you can see about a minute ago that they want you to continue to avoid the area but expect some major roads to be shut down uh in the area to expedite victim transport so now they're not just talking about uh officers here Jane it sounds like there are some victims involved in this uh so I'm just reading between the lines but as you saw from that statement uh I it did not talk about officers now they were talking about victims so seems like we've got officers and victims involved all right right now looking at a picture of I77 north uh at Exit 9 exit exit 9 so that's right into Uptown so that's that that's that closure there and it's that could be there for a while yeah that could be there for a while and that's just going to continue to get worse if people aren't taking those detours or or hopefully they're you've got that downloaded app right that's why we say download the app because we can send you those notifications as quick to your phone or your your other uh handheld devices um and we always ask you know if you are sending we've got numerous photos and videos from folks so if you're in a safe spot you can use that near me function on our app bottom right you can send video or photos to us but only when it's safe to do so if you're seeing a scene or if you you've seen something please send it in because then it helps us tell the story and tell other folks what you're seeing absolutely so the latest tweet we received from cmpd their official latest update was that uh the US Marshall's office uh task force which is comprised of officers from multiple agencies was conducting an an investigation in the area area of the 5,000 block of gallway drive when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital the cmpd SWAT team is currently on scene all right kayin hagwood is on Plaza we've been talking about Plaza potentially being shut down or having just congestion overall Kaylin what if you seen well cin let me just sort of walk you through what we're seeing out here and it honestly is a chaotic scene we have helicopters just above us we have traffic that is in standstill we had multiple people stop us while we were in our news vehicle to ask us what is going on I actually pulled over I was in a separate vehicle from my photographer and I had to pull over just so we could get into the same car because it was just absolute Madness now you guys are seeing one of the roads this is actually near where one of those blockages are I mean we talked about I77 being blocked other side streets and nearby stre Street blocked off as we were getting closer I mean that was probably about 20 minutes ago not only did we see multiple law enforcement Cruisers state troopers cmpd mecklinburg County uh we also saw uh medic we saw uh uh ambulances going toward you know I'm assuming a hospital after multiple officers were down based off of what has taken place in this incident want to show you guys a little bit more of of what we're seeing and again this is really a calm down version of all that has taken place complete chaos multiple schools letting out this is the time when students will get out so imagine just the frustration and um and worry and concern among parents as a lot of those kids you know they get out they maybe they walk home or they walk to the bus lot wherever they're going um and just seeing masses of kids and these large amounts of of um of Law Enforcement Officers we saw one of those medic they do buses they have buses for mass casualty events now that doesn't necessarily mean that there is a large mass casualty event but what we know now at this point is that multiple officers have been injured so when you see things like that we saw the SWAT team as we were coming in and again just absolute chaos and confusion from folks wanting to know what exactly happened where we are on the Plaza and again I can I can't get any closer but I can see on my maps multiple red areas so that kind of shows you where the uh traffic is blocked off right that gway drive where everyone has been talking about the area where this incident started if you look on the map you don't even actually see and now we're there's some type of um some type of smoke that we're smelling coming from um coming from near where we are standing so uh pretty soon we're going to we're going to we're going to move I'm not entirely sure why that is but I will say nearby where that smoke that we're smelling again the plaza right here I don't know if you guys can see that Haze but nearby this area is where all of this has taken place but gway drive where the actual incident uh was was apparently said to have started if you look on maps it doesn't even show any red in that area which makes me think that maybe it has moved a little bit or maybe the suspects or the subjects have moved somewhere else OB obviously a a a huge scene we don't know if we're talking about one person we don't know if we're talking about two people we don't know how many individuals are involved or what type of weapons that they have still so many questions and our Jesse Pierre is going to be getting those answers directly from law enforcement we are covering this from all angles guys again we have multiple law enforcement officers that are down it's an extremely scary situation there's going to be a long process after this just making sure um that you know with the with the families and and the recovery and even counselors when we talk about um just the the the the pain and the the stress of of being in the law enforcement profession and what it takes to be in this job and the different things that these officers see and now to have an incident like this is extremely scary and we're again right in the thick of it hoping to bring you guys what little information we have as this continues to unfold kayn Hagin live on scene there at the plaza waiting to gather get more information appreciate your take on it uh describing a bit of a strange smell a little bit of an odor now in the air and uh just staying away from the scene as it is still very active cmpd um emphasizing how dangerous it is still so if you are at home if you're watching on TV if you are about to hit the road best to stay at home as we come up on the air just after 3:00 this afternoon want to uh get you caught up on what we know so far just after 1:30 this afternoon uh you us Marshall's office responded we're on scene of a house in the 5,000 block of gallway drive just south of Milton Road there in East Charlotte they were fired upon uh at least one suspect um open fire on a number of officers and now we have uh cmpd confirming that uh multiple officers have been struck by the suspect uh and transported to local hospitals cmpd SWAT team is currently on scene and there are several closures including 77 just to get ambulance and emergency response as quickly and as effectively as they can to this scene in East Charlotte so it might be miles away from the plaza or uh gallway drive but they are closing a number of streets CMS we have reached out to CMS we are learning that CMS officials are hoping to contact parents uh they're looking for parents about or looking to talk to parents and then they will communicate with us as soon as they uh let parents know what to do uh with their kids we also uh are working to learn how many officers were shot and um and how many suspects there are so there is a lot of information out there right now we do have a tweet from representative Alma Adams uh who is who whose District this belongs to and it reads I've been hold on I can't really see that here uh there there we are I've been made aware of the active shooter incident on gway Drive in East Charlotte and in touch with local law enforcement and the mayor's office I am praying for the injured officers and their families want to toss it now to our Megan Bragg who is here in studio uh with a verified check and what you can tell us what we can confirm and what is not true so far M yeah and Jane we've seen a lot going around on social media and we are trying to look at what's confirmed what's not confirmed like you said so let's take a look at this we've been getting a lot of Tweets in we've been seeing a lot of tweets some of the tweets that we've seen is that four police officers have been shot we are putting this in the question mark category for right now because that is not confirmed and we they are saying that there two critical injuries those are police officers once again that that is not confirmed but like Jane has been saying several times we do know that numerous officers have been shot okay let's take a look at this next TW tweet it says shooting for police officers in the middle of the day while Marshals are serving warrants causing a school to go on lockdown like we said we know that US Marshals were on scene investigating something but we don't know if they were issuing a warrant so once again that is not confirmed and we are still waiting to hear from CMS about if any school is on lockdown or was on lockdown uh prior to this so we will continue to look through social media if you guys do have any questions feel free to reach out to us you can email us at verify wcnc.com but once again we are sifting through those social media um tweets Facebook Instagram anything like that to see what's real what's not real so we can uh bring you the facts guys Megan great thank you for uh sorting that out and again continue um letting us know what you know what you see and we will also go ahead and reverifying checking with you a little bit later want to go back to our Jesse Pierre who is at the staging area Jesse what can you tell us at this hour well right now we're still waiting for cm to speak to us and share any more details that they have but um the main thing they've told us is to make sure to let the public know to keep the area clear you know the area near the where the investigative investigation is going is active there is an active shooting investigation going on for your safety and also to make sure that the ambulance police cars can move efficiently in the area you want to make sure to keep the area clear now as I've been here I've seen several police cars pass by um as well as some ambulance es um so you know a lot going on over here I did speak to a father who was parked in this lot as well and he says he was just trying to get home um he says that he got a phone call from his neighbor and pretty much told him there was a shooting and as he tried to get closer home he really couldn't get any closer because of all the road closures and the amount of police officers that are in the area um so we'll hear from that father and overall he says he's just trying to get his to his kids bring them home and get them out of school because of all of this going on on my way home and then my neighbor called me you know he stayed right across from him and he said that um he's a man there some shooting going on man we ain't never had nothing like this you never we ain't never had nothing like this you I've been over 27 years it's wild man I got to go get my kids from school and the guy didn't want me to move my vehicle I said man can I go get my kids and that was the gentleman that I was speaking to earlier again you know a lot of the roads are blocked so if you live in that immediate area you won't be able to really get close to your home and really police is really asking folks to stay away from the area again this happened on gway Drive near Julian Underwood Park not far from the intersection of the plaza and Milton Road so for your safety and also um to make sure that the police and ambulance can get through in the area as quickly as efficiently as possible they want you to keep this area clear now again we are waiting for cnpd um hopefully they'll be able to speak to us within the next hour to give us more details but we do know that multiple officers have been shot and taken to the hospital so again you want to make sure that you stay away from this area to keep a clear space for um police and ambulance to get through um I'm here again at the Family Dollar this is the staging area um police really asking even media to stay away from the area just kind of stay in a close location so that we can you know get the information directly from them but also so that we can make sure that we stay safe over here now again you know traffic isn't moving too crazy over here but we know that some major roads are blocked um so if you do live in that immediate air if you live close to where this investigation is going um you want to make sure to stay away um from that area for your safety and so that the police can do their job sending it back to you live out on the scene Jesse Pierre Jesse thank you for that live report yeah we have a lot of people a lot of families concerned about CMS schools with f with uh students being let out around this hour we are learning that four CMS schools went on a modified lockdown uh whether it is is they are still on lockdown that part is unclear so we're working to confirm which schools are uh went on that original modified lockdown and if they have been cleared from that status also we have uh learned that Senator Tillis posted on social media an attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and service all Susan and I are praying for everyone's safety we have a lot of traffic affected here so many road closures and KJ even our own crews are trying to get to the staging area and they're saying that they're being detoured all over the place so a lot of those smaller streets around the immediate area of gallway Drive certainly closed but this is having a very large impact around uh the Charlotte area Jay and that's right the impact is massive and just hearing some of those reports coming in from kayn as well as Jesse out there describing the scene it's being chaotic a little frantic folks trying to get from point A to point B and trying to figure out also what's going on on especially with this event but here's a look right now you can see uh both sides of I77 back open back um moving here and I'm sure people are trying to get there rather quickly especially after the backup so just be mindful that folks are probably moving um with Pace out there uh this afternoon especially after having traffic um shut down but we did have a section of uh I77 Northbound shut down Police use their Cruisers to block off the road for a little a little more than an hour it seemed I think we started seeing the roads being blocked off around say 2:15 so we're now at about 10 after 3 11 after 3 but you can see um the roads are starting to show some relief out here as we take it uh back one uh so the purple shading um near exit one uh headed towards say 277 from I77 uh is no longer purple and that was an indication that it was shut down maybe a little purple there but that was soon update now that traffic is back moving but you can see still stop and go for parts of 77 but from what we can see from those live pictures uh it does seem that traffic is moving along but just keep in mind I77 may be back open and running but we do have delays on Independence as well as additional uh roads across the area Randolph Road Colonia Avenue and cwell Road we're also looking at some of delays so in and around the area you will likely be redirected uh due to the backup um in traffic police are using their Cruisers to block off roads they're going to be perimeter set up so just know that you may have to work around on this scene so they're advising you to stay put to avoid uh just getting out there if you don't have to be Jane Vanessa all right KJ thank you so much just to reset here right now it is uh just about 3:15 and we've been following this uh very active scene at this hour two hours at this point I believe that this has all been underway and um it it sounds like it is causing widespread impacts Jane absolutely uh 140 is when we started hearing the uh the scanner traffic and the alerts by cmpd to a stay stay away from this area on gallway Drive south of Milton Road right by the park as Jesse's been reporting it's it's off the plaza so it's in East Charlotte major um part of the the city where so many streets feed into that area uh now with school letting out people are going to be hitting the road for their afternoon commute uh and these roads are closed until further notice essentially yes once again multiple law enforcement officers have been shot that has been confirmed by cmpd uh we are told that this happened during a US Marshals task force operation and apparently according to police the suspect involved with that operation ended up shooting at multiple Law Enforcement Officers so a lot of the traffic impacts we're seeing are related to the medical transport of these officers trying to shut down the roadways and get these officers to the hospital get that medical care as quickly as possible 77 are major freeways and interstates closed off to expedite some of the ambulance response you can see it is now beginning to move and it was loosening up there as you saw on the maps that KJ was talking about but this response reaching other areas of the Queen City around the Charlotte Metro and even into uh York County this is a post from the York County Sheriff's Office saying that they stand ready to assist our brothers and sisters at cmpd in any way we can Sheriff Kevin Tolson and our staff are monitoring the situation and praying for nothing but positive outcomes for all officers involved now what we usually see if we have any sort of major event that particularly involves this particular agency it doesn't necessarily always have to be police related but we've seen this for example when we had the South Park fire and we had a large response from multiple agencies where we will see area agencies step up and try to lend a hand because this is obviously going to be a very trying time for cmpd as they of course worry about the conditions of these officers these are wounded officers that they're trying to get medical care right now and so you can see of course the outpouring of support it's uh amazing that the response is such that it is the governor for North Carolina now tweeting I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area and we have offered State resources to help cmpd posting about six minutes ago again reminding everyone this is still an active scene roads are still blocked all media must go to the media staging area active gunfire on scene confirmed information will be released from cmpd public affairs as it becomes available so we're working to still learn how many officers were involved here but again officers shot and you can see the tweet on screen right now saying that it is an active scene we can't um say that enough because people are curious and they want to see and look at video and post to their own accounts but uh it's not safe to to do so at this point and I think it is important to remind folks we are trying to get information just as much as you are we have multiple Crews that we have dispatched to various areas where we think information might be dispersed where we might be able to gather some independent information of our own so we are working very hard to try to get you some more information but it is not uncommon in a situation like this where it might take a little bit of time to get some concrete information from authorities themselves of course we are very concerned to find out how many officers might have been shot what is the nature of their injuries how seriously injured are they we are working to try to get all of that information we just got word of CMS schools I mentioned earlier that four of them went on modified lockdown we now know the list of those four schools due to the activity in the area they are Devonshire Elementary School Brierwood Academy co-trained Collegiate uh Collegiate rather and Lawrence or Elementary School uh Transportation will be in impacted for all schools during dismissal so uh we just confirmed those four schools went on a modified lockdown because of the police activity Devonshire Elementary Brierwood Academy co-trained Collegiate and Lawrence or elementary school and I think of course right it do it didn't say it in the media release that we just received from CMS but I would presume that they would not want parents to go to these schools because once again we are hearing from authorities that they would like people to stay out of this affected area uh there's probably a lot that they don't know about security of course there's probably a lot that they're trying to uh make sure that they're uh confirming for real that it is clear and it is safe to be in this area so once again we had mentioned those four CMS schools that are on a modified lockdown uh we would just urge that parents don't try to make their way over to those schools and once again we do know transportation is expected to be impacted but of course we'll let you know as we learn more on that front although they have reopened 77 so there is some relief there as far as your afternoon commute goes uh that was shut down I would say for at least half an hour and it really caused things to jam up a parking lot Colin Mayfield was here he is actually heading to one of the the scenes there we have several Crews it's kind of an all Hands-On deck situation trying to gather the information and learn what has transpired here in East Charlotte but Colin said he was stuck on 77 he saw a half dozen emergency crews just fly by him uh coming up from the south so you can like you said the the response is so big just coming from all areas of the city and I was coming into work from the Uptown Southend area and actually as I was getting ready for work all I could hear were ambulances for a period of time and um it just sounded out of the blue and a little bit more urgent than a typical ambulance response that you might hear on a normal day so yeah this definitely sounds like a big big big response um we are of course hearing that once again this was a task force operation when the officers were shot involving the US Marshals at that at a house um and so we're when they came under Fire and then officers responded and they came under Fire so we don't know how many suspects are involved or how many officers were shot but cmpd saying multiple officers shot and transported to hospitals we're working to confirm the condition of uh their injuries at this point and today was a big day to talk about the safety going on for this weekend's Festival love and Life Festival so a lot of officers were in the Uptown area um gathering for that and planning for what is supposed to be a a wonderful welcome warm event that's attracting these major Headliners to to Charlotte and now uh now responding to the scene here in East yeah it is um a lot of course that this agency is having to deal with um we are um you know of course waiting to hear more about this operation this us Marshalls operation that reportedly sparked all this we we don't know the nature of it whatsoever uh authorities have not released that information but we knew no general what US Marshals do and and sometimes they are involved with trying to apprehend criminals and try to get um folks who might have for example an outstanding warrant into custody among other duties that the US Marshals are tasked with so time will tell and and of course we'll wait for authorities to confirm exactly the nature of this operation that sparked this but we are continuing to see folks impacted across the city in various ways and of course we mentioned traffic being a big concern as well we've heard from our Jesse Pierre who's on scene who's been speaking with various folks who are either trying to get home or or trying to get to other places around the city and and it sounds like folks are being uh jammed up as some of the road closures have taken place take a listen here my way home and then my neighbor called me you know he stayed right across the street from me and he said that um he's a man there some shooting going on man we ain't never had nothing like this never we a't never had nothing like this you I've been over there 27 years it's wild man I got to go get my kids from school and the guy didn't want me to move my vehicle I said man can I go get my keid we'll take a look right now at traffic yes we can see it looks like a lot of the flow that we're seeing that that is starting to jam up appears to be in some of our usual suspects you might say for this time of day so we're not quite into the rush hour period but we know that 485 seems to be jamming up as we approach that 5:00 hour that looks like that is the case at this hour and uh we are seeing some backups heading out of the Charlotte area along Independence so I wouldn't necessarily say that I'm seeing anything out of the blue um 77 coming up too Vanessa um in terms of the road closure so that's providing some relief um when we had uh John Bel freeway also blocked off as we've seen from the um traffic camera there uh traffic is moving on John Bel as well as uh wison as we were looking at i76 uh wion Boulevard uh so we are getting a little bit of relief but just keep in mind we do have uh we still have some road closures out there uh I can run off a few of them um at this time as we have uh the lane restriction on North Graham Street uh we also have um King's drive we have uh police restricting traffic on South Caswell Road Queens Road uh so we do have numerous um areas that are blocked off Randolph Road Colonia Avenue cwell Road so just keep in mind right along Independence uh Eastway Drive uh traffic is being redirected um because of um this ongoing situation but we are getting a little bit of relief but just keep in mind it's still a pretty chaotic situation because this event is starting to U merge with the after school crowd um the afternoon into the evening rush hour yeah uh KJ speaking of uh after school we do know the four schools on modified lockdown because of the police activity they're listed on your screen right now Devonshire Elementary briwood Academy co- Trin Collegiate uh Collegiate [Music] and Lawrence or elementary school so Transportation impacted for all schools during dismissal because of the modified lockdown happening on gallway drive so uh with those schools being affected the district says transport will be impacted for all schools though during dismissal and we are working to get more information by the way uh not just about these multiple officers shot but also the nature of the operation that prompted the shooting that police say they were executing some sort of operation with the US Marshals and the suspect reportedly shot at these officers uh were working to learn more about the lane blockages how long those might be in place of course the impacts to the schools the impacts to the transportation we do have multiple Crews working to gather those details for you we want to provide you the information as quickly as we can and we do know that it might take a little bit of time in in kind of a chaotic hectic situation like this to to gather that information but we would just urge you to stay with us and we will bring you the very latest as it's coming into our Newsroom we have several Crews headed to uh many areas and parts of the scene in the meantime uh we are hearing from our lawmakers Alma Adams whose District this is in said I've been made aware of the active shooter incident on gallway Drive in East Charlotte and I'm in touch with local law enforcement and the mayor's office I am praying for the injured officers and their families Senator Tom Tillis also uh posted on social media saying an attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and service all Susan and I are praying for everyone's safety and um Governor Cooper also just posted a few minutes ago saying I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area and we have offered State resources to help we also are hearing from York County uh and the sheriff there uh ycso as you can see here stands ready to assist our brothers and sisters at cmpd in any way we can Sheriff Kevin tulson and our staff are monitoring the situation and praying for nothing but positive outcomes for all officers involved and we are seeing sentiments like this from across our area out on social media I know uh some of us have been Tweeting or exing if you will or putting on Facebook or Instagram any details as as we find them and I am just seeing constant outpouring from folks in the comments or in the reposts saying that they are praying for these officers as well certainly a difficult situation because we don't know how many officers yet are impacted how many were shot what is the nature of their injuries how severe are these injuries uh this is something that a lot of folks at home are waiting to hear with baited breath because they are very concerned as we all are for their conditions cmpd just posted poed seconds ago uh cmpd saying other law enforcement agencies are still involved on an active scene in the gallway drive area more information will be released in a media briefing that will take place as soon as the situation stabilizes so uh doesn't even give us a time but when this will stabilize and that is unclear as we continue to follow the latest um the information is very limited what cmpd does keep on putting out there is that roads are still blocked so please expect delays but you can see there cmpd this going to be on Loop now cmpd and other law enforcement agencies are still involved on an active scene in the gallway drive area more information will be released in a media briefing that will take place as soon as the situation stabilizes posted just one minute ago now we know that this media briefing could likely take place at a media stage in area and so we've been made aware of what that location is and we have dispatched actually multiple Crews we will have multiple Crews at this media staging area hopefully this is where the media briefing takes place and so as soon as that information comes down as soon as that briefing happens you are going to see it here on air and also of course everywhere that we're streaming right now online you're watching this video uh sort of on Loop of uh cmpd units going by medic going by full lights and Sirens uh you can hear it and see it these are the pictures we have right now from someone who uh obviously a someone who pulled over and and and took the um took the video as we get crw position with cnpd saying that this is still a very active scene and gunfire is it's a dangerous scene we are keeping our crews uh in a safe position as well as they try to U get a location where they can uh come to us live and of of course those crews are out in various areas around the impacted area but also as we mentioned areas where we think information directly from authorities might be coming out we actually have heard from one of our crews who spoke with a woman and she says that she is in this area when the kurur fuffle is happening if you will and apparently has video um that she's she has of these officers pulling up in her her yard and jumping out and if you could just take a listen to hear what she has to say first of all at 2:00 they shut this street down so I asked somebody who was on the street what happened and he said they're shooting somebody's shooting so I came out and went to Shannon house to get into the neighborhood cuz my house is apparently in the middle of the center of all of this so coming across Shannon house the police stop all traffic you can't turn you can't come down the plaza anything so SWAT everybody starts coming apparently SWAT is pulled into our driveway from the cameras we can see that the police are getting out their car with their guns drawn so we don't know if the shooter is like was a lake back there if the the shooter is there or where the shooter actually is in the midst of all this but I just know that they tell us we can't go home those who live in the neighborhood we are coming up on 3:30 right now I'm Jane monreal joined by Vanessa Rufus as We are following this breaking news on an officer involved shooting coming up on two hours since this first started 5,000 block of gallway Drive in East Charlotte just south of Milton Road a very concerning situation as we are hearing from cmpd multiple law enforcement officers have been shot and they say that this happened while cmpd along with us Marshalls task force and potentially other agencies were involved in some sort of oper operation at a home in the 5500 block of gallway drive so that is in the East Charlotte area and so they say that this is a suspect who fired upon their officers and we are seeing widespread impacts following that shooting they confirm multiple officers have been shot the extent of their injuries unknown at this time and how many suspects involved uh we are still working to learn more about that a staging area has been set up for media to gather that information but cmpd will release more in a briefing once they see they deem the situation has stabilized uh that is the last note they put out on social media that this information will be released and it will take place as soon as the uh situation stabilizes indicating that this is still very active this is still very unstable and very dangerous and we are seeing you know speaking of the impacts we just mentioned a lot of concerns to traffic we know that roadways are closed because we have law enforcement offic officers who are injured we are hearing that major roadways some thores to get from the scene to the hospitals have been closed to make quicker way for these officers to get the medical care that they need so not only are police asking you to avoid this immediate area where this reported shooting happened but also try to be clear you know of these major roadways heading towards Hospital hospitals where they might shut the roadways down to make way for these ambulances we're even seeing impacts to Local Schools Jane absolutely a number of schools affected uh four of them were on a modified lockdown uh still unclear if they're they remain on a modified lockdown that list is on your screen right now including Devonshire Elementary Brierwood Academy co-trained Collegiate and Lawrence or elementary school but traffic and transportation I should say is impacted for all schools across SI s and we saw we're still seeing delays and now we're going to be uh combining it with the afternoon drive so it really is just a situation that's going to be be tough if you need to hit the roads that's right and Justin from cats they say that you should be expecting delays for bus routes using 77 and 277 limited service now for uh the area between CTC and French Street stations on the Gold Line there is no service eastbound on the Gold Line at this time cmpd just wanting to put out there keep reminding people if you are just joining us to stay inside your home if you uh haven't left if you're just learning if you're just hearing the sirens and you're looking at the lights and wondering what's going on stay inside your home uh if you have to make your way out and about on the roads you know do so carefully there's going to be a lot of traffic a lot of these smaller neighborhood streets are closed there are several detours posted because of this massive response now in a frightening situation like this breaking new sit situation where a lot of information is coming in Fast and Furious and sometimes there might be a vacuum of information for example we don't know how many officers and and the nature of their injuries you could see some misinformation pop up but we do have a team in place that is meant to really fact check what we know and what we don't know at this hour absolutely our Megan Bragg now looking at uh what's been taking place and sifting through some of the chatter on social media with a verified fact check Megan and guys there's been a lot of chatter on social media at this hour and of course we're going to take a look at this tweet it says that there's an active sniper attack in Charlotte and radio traffic reports the death of one police officer and five others that were injured so we can confirm this is what we can confirm at this hour that numerous officers were shot but cmpd has not told us that five officers were shot they haven't told us how many or that they have not reported on any injuries or deaths at this hour or the extent of their injuries so all we know is is that numerous officers have been shot and as far as the active sniper we are unsure of that we don't know what kind of weapon was used in this so we are also going to put this in the question mark category as for those shutdowns we told you earlier that people were reporting that there were some uh school shutdowns we have those uh listed right here Jane just saying that there have been a modified lockdown at this hour so this is what we have confirmed these four schools on that modified lockdown and of course we continue to get information into the studio and we will be sure to give you the facts on this like I said Lots going around on social media right now so if you have any questions feel free to email us at verify at wcnc.com and we will continue uh to look through that social media and fact check for you guys all right thank you so much Megan cmpd just uh tweeting out they've been active letting us know a little bit here and there but their latest tweet just seconds ago on social media saying the US Marshall's fugitive task force which is comprised of several agencies in the Charlotte area was attempting to serve a warrant in the 5000 block of gallway drive when shots were fired this is still an active scene more to come from cmpd public affairs and of course while we await that information we do have our crews posed in areas where we believe information might be coming out Jesse Pierre is at one of those locations uh over at the media staging area over at the operations area have you learned anything what are you hearing from folks in the area Jesse so right now I am at that media staging area off of the plaza not far from Milton Road and just waiting for cmpd to speak to us whenever they get ready um as of right now the only message they have is to tell the public to really stay away from the immediate area um saying again that this is an active shooting investigation so for your safety you want to stay away but also to make sure that police officers and ambulances can get where they need to get we don't need any extra traffic any extra cars on the roads um just making sure that you can clear the area for them now I've spoken to a couple of people in the parking lot again this is the media staging area but folks who haven't been able to get to their home because again there are several roads that are closed at this time um you know from what we saw from cmpd's um what they've been putting out some of them are closed obviously for safety reasons but also to just clear a keep a clear air for police officers and so forth to get around um one father I spoke to he said you know he's never seen anything like this he's he really said there was just so many uh officers so many police cars and SWAT and so forth he was really shocked to see this in his neighborhood in his community and he wasn't able to even drive into it so he pulled over um over here um into the parking lot just you know kind of waiting it's a waiting game until police clears the area but this is a little bit of what he had to say earlier my way home and then my neighbor called me you know he stayed right across the street from me and he said that um he said man there some shooting going on man we ain't never had nothing like this never we ain't never had nothing like this I've been over there 27 years it's wild man I got to go get my kids from school and the guy didn't want me to move my vehicle I said man can I go get my kids so again I'm here in the staging area off of the plaza and Milton Road not far from where the active shooting um took place again police asking folks to make sure to stay away from the area you know and obviously with all these road closures you can also expect if you're taking public transportation you can see some delays there um there are a lot of major roads that are closed and um you can see kind of the traffic really slow down in this area so I don't know you know how much traffic is impacted because of the road closures here but um for your safety you want to stay away from the area for right now again what police have confirmed is multiple officers have been shot um as far as the injuries um the condition of those officers we are still waiting to hear and as soon as we get that information from cmpd we'll bring it to you live Jessie Pi sending it back to you all right Jesse thank you so much and uh we are getting some looks from other Crews who are out in different areas we know the hospital is going to be an area that's going to be of high importance at this hour because of the nature of the injuries that we're hearing so you can see here uh the hospital there it looks like it's Atrium and a crew standing by on scene to learn more about uh what's happened to uh some of the officers transported to that scene yeah patrol cars out there anxiously awaiting obviously as we all are updates on these law enforcement officers who have been wounded in this gunfire we uh do have another uh reporter to get to it sounds like our Kalin hagwood has just gotten into place at uh her uh post if you will Plaza so this is the plaza area kaln what are you seeing out there well Vanessa we are just finally able to get a little bit closer to this location and and uh area is certainly a great word to describe it because it seems like there are so many many scenes related to this gway drive is where this all apparently got started and yet so many roads have been blocked off in the surrounding areas we talked about I77 part of that road being blocked off at least at one point today the plaza here this is a you know a community area a lot of neighborhoods around this area and this road had been uh blocked off for a time and now some cars able to move through um there's an elementary school not far from where I am and it was just it just let out that elementary school I want to get that name for you so that way you have it we we've been moving so much today um it is Brierwood elementary school so that school just letting out and just you know imagine the parent line you know a whole line full of parents wanting to get their kids and having to see really what was just chaotic there's no other way to describe it um helicopters in the air state troopers uh medic mass casualty bus what I saw just within my eyes while we were traveling this way we also saw um again the SWAT team was here multiple cmpd Cruisers and meinberg County as well so it's been an extremely active scene if you take a look here just behind me you can see law enforcement still working on this road on the Plaza again this was one of those roads that had a major slowdown we couldn't even travel this way a little bit earlier today I'd say about 30 to 45 minutes ago so things are progressing quite quickly um as I was up a little bit further up from you know if we imagine ourselves as down I was a little bit further up this road um probably about an hour ago again couldn't get any further down at that time but we I smelled what smelled to me at the time like gunm smoke um so so strong the scent that it actually made a cloud in the air and was it was really kind of choking me as we were sort of walking away trying to get into a safer location but it just sort of shows you there so many different factors so many different things that are happening on this scene um throughout the day and and folks really just wanting to have answers on exactly what happened we know that at uh there there was apparently US Marshal serving a warrant whenever this all took place we know that multiple law enforcement officers have been shot and so or injured rather I'm assuming that that was a shooting from based off of what we're learning again this is all happening all at once and our Jesse Pierre will have more information on the specifics of this case but to give you just a sense of what it's been like for the community out here just total chaos uh frustration um fear from parents had people pull us over in our news vehicle just saying hey what's going on I just want to make sure my kids's okay and all we could give them was just you know that it's an active situation and the the information is developing and to watch us um you know we spoke to a neighbor who lives in this area who said he got a call um from one of his loved ones who said you know are you okay and at that time he wasn't even aware of what was going on other than the fact that he had started to hear helicopters and law enforcement Cruisers and now he's just been on edge you know waiting to to learn more about what is taking place so you know we're Gathering what we can trying to provide those answers but it's certainly going to be a long night for law enforcement as they work through the details of this investigation um and of course for those families that are mourning um right now uh at the hospital making sure that their loved ones are okay a long night for them as well as people keep them in their thoughts and prayers yeah certainly a traumatizing situation for all um and we heard of course kayn right talking about uh the school that she is at least being able to confirm it it looks like they're letting out but we know that others are imp four listed uh in on modified lockdown a little while ago including Brierwood Academy that kayin was talking about Devonshire Elementary part of that group as well as co-trained a Collegiate and Lawrence or elementary school but transportation is definitely affected for all of the schools across CMS and a lot of parents have questions about their families we are just getting word though that all lockdowns have been lifted here so at least again we're getting to that uh mode of stabilizing the scene so just another sign that dismissal has started uh so that will be encouraging news for parents concerned about getting their their children out of school today yeah certainly a promising situation to hear not just for the parents and students but also seemingly that they feel comfortable enough about the scene itself uh about you know the shooting that prompted this the suspect who prompted this this whole uh scene that is impacting the Charlotte area that they feel like that they can go ahead and uh clear those schools and and start the dismissal process for them uh once again we just want to remind folks this is very active we are trying to gather as much information as we can for you and bring it to you as soon as it comes in to our Newsroom we're literally bringing you these updates just as they come in like within the moment but we are still waiting to hear so much more so we have heard from police that a lot of this information will probably come in larger form so not just peace meal as we're kind of getting here once that situation stabilizes in their words and and I can only imagine a lot will be in the up up in the air for the next few hours absolutely we are waiting uh along with you for the information to come out about who was involved how many officers were shot the status of uh of their injuries uh how many gunman suspects are involved here in the circumstances of how this all started just over two hours ago and the 5,000 block of uh gallway Drive in East Charlotte it's near a park it's in a neighborhood uh so a lot of people are concerned that they were hearing anecdotally that they they heard shots were fired they're concerned about their own safety and this is now a larger picture for the Charlotte Metra with streets being closed off and cmpd warning and tell telling people to just stay in in your home and at work as as much as you can and you know we I quickly did want to draw attention to the Tweet we just had up a few moments ago where police say that largely this is now contained to the neighborhood itself the gallway drive neighborhood and they are asking neighbors to continue to shelter in place so there is still some concern for the safety of neighbors out there so there you can see it so they're asking the neighborhood to continue to shelter in place and people who don't have to be there on gallway drive to avoid the area I know briefly we were seeing a shot over by it looked like Atrium Health we know that the hospitals once again are going to be of great importance right now multiple officers shot once again roadways closed so that ambulances can transport these officers quickly to the hospital and we've been getting some video from our crews around the area whether they are live pictures or they recorded videos of their you see ambulances rushing those wounded we've heard about the mass casualty bus that has been deployed we don't know exactly we don't want to imply any mass casualty here but we just saw the bus which was responding to that scene uh that is a medic uh bus we also um are seeing patrol cars staked out outside these hospitals so presumably police officers waiting for more information U from the hospital teams there who are obviously uh dealing with with a a crisis for them absolutely and although though the situation has been isolated now to that street of gallway Drive the 5,000 block with uh people Sheltering in place also we are getting into that drive time hour uh schools are getting dismissed now so traffic will be uh even worse maybe potentially as uh folks are now trying to get home and trying to leave work that's right we have the rush hour we have road closures of course we know that uh our Austin Walker has just arrived over at Novant Health so this is a different hospital than what we've been showing the the scenes of Prior so Austin what does it look like out there yeah hey guys we're just trying to probably sift through this information right now as we are learning more every single minute so when we first got here it looked a little bit different as you can see behind me very very calm but that was not the case about 15 minutes ago uh there's been a perimeter actually set up in this area because uh of all the intense situations that's kind of going on we know that cmpd as well as Charlotte Fire state troopers meinberg County Sheriffs are all here right now uh we did see a big presence as they pulled in Sirens were going off I've never seen so many police officers in one area that being said we are trying to learn more about what's going on right now we did ask novon Health exactly uh what we should be expecting at this location they directed us back to cmpd for any questions as of right now but we did see the governor take to Twitter today saying that he is with us in Charlotte he says he sends his remarks and he sends his strength uh to the Queen City that being said again as we try to learn more information uh for what exactly is going on who could be arriving to Novant we'll make sure to update you on air and online with the latest but for now we're going to send back in the studio all right Austin thank you yes and we continue to see an outpouring of support too from various officials around the Charlotte area and really Beyond even meinberg County mayor V is just posting on social media saying I am deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred that involved Charlotte mberg police officers and US Marshals today I ask that at all charlot Ians keep them the other injured officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time just posted that uh about 10 minutes ago lots of folks indeed keeping these officers in their prayers we've been seeing that outpouring on social media not just by officials but also residents charans folks who live in this community and care about the welfare of these officers and and are very troubled about the situation to hear about what unfolded this afternoon and now our Julia Kaufman is at Atrium uh Hospital Julia what can you tell us about the officers hey all we know so far is traffic around Atrium Health in the Dilworth area has been Relentless multiple intersections um blocked and shut down by police officers we've seen multiple police cars zooming by uh we are on South Kings right now Atrium Maine is behind me um we got a peak of of some officers driving into the emergency room area but they have it pretty locked down here all we know is they've been rerouting traffic or trying to help traffic move through uh but it was shut down at one point at uh Scott in East we see it flowing now here on South King Street but still very backed up um some cop cars just drove sped through it they looked like uh County sheriff's police so we're going to keep an eye on things and and give you more information soon Julia I'll check in with you a little bit later thank you for the live report all right meantime we want to go over to Austin Walker once again Austin is posted up outside novon Health do you have any updates to share Austin yeah in the last 30 seconds we actually saw a a caravan of state troopers as well as medic vehicles coming into this area speeding through just down four street across Caswell again we're not sure exactly uh like who was in that medic vehicle but they did have urgency they are again heading towards that novon area uh again we are not allowed on scene right now to the hospital so there is a perimeter Set uh we are on the edge of it and we're getting updates uh little by little exactly kind of what is going on as of right now again just to give you a little recap we did see about 20 minutes ago this looked like a very different area again as you can see behind uh not many things are are developing as of right now but literally Lally in the last 20 seconds before you guys came out to me live it looked very different we saw all these uh cars uh racing towards the hospital um there was a lot of backed up traffic because they did um have a lot of events going on out here when it comes to uh personnel and emergency vehicles in this area since that it has been cleared but still a lot of traffic is backed up in the Elizabeth area so if you are coming back from work picking your kids up from school heading back to this area be mindful that you may want to actually take a different route maybe go around uh the Elizabeth and Plaza Midwood area uh again things are changing by the little by little every 10 to 15 seconds so we are going to continue to follow the story and bring you the updates live and the latest so stick with us but for now we're live at novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte all right Austin thank you so much we are still seeing those impacts to to the roadways kind of as Austin alluded to yeah absolutely not only those streets King Street cwell by noon and Atrium Maine but even uh interstate 77 was closed for at least half an hour for that immediate effective response and as you take a look at the map right now you could see all of that red and orange surrounding um the the Charlotte area really that's 77 at Exit 9 I believe so near Bank of America s that was closed for a long time it has now reopened but uh it's just going to be really heavy and slow our crews were having difficult managing some of those surface streets because they were detoured all over East Charlotte before they were able to um actually pull over and and set up their their live shot as we saw there from from Julia and Kalin kin was up and down the plaza as they were being you know detoured all over uh the East Charlotte area so as the situation is coming to a point where we can get more information potentially uh we are seeing some heavy delays at out there all right we are getting some more information into our Newsroom so this was from two law enforcement officials who have reported to NBC News a US Deputy Marshall was among those shot today while serving a warrant in Charlotte the Marshall is still alive one official has told NBC News he is in surgery though fighting for his life and three other members of the task force who are local police officers so we'll remind you we've heard from police this was a task force made up of multiple agencies from around Charlotte so three other members of the task force were also shot according to this official more information to come as they are able to confirm it to us so five then so five officers one official who is in surgery a US Marshal three other members of of the task force as well so at this point it sounds like we're hearing four so just keep in mind this information is coming to us via NBC News confirmed by two law enforcement officials who have knowledge of the situation and of course as things develop as things change sometimes we get updates on conditions Etc we'll let you know cnbd telling us that they will release more information as this situation uh stabilizes so there is no definite time on when they hope to release more details but just that uh the threat has been isolated now to that original area the 5,000 block of gallway Drive between uh Milton Road and uh Denson that's off the plaza though so a lot of streets there as you can see by this map uh surround this neighborhood where us Marshall's task force was there uh serving a warrant and then they were fired upon from someone inside a home it sounds like uh that happened around one o'clock this afternoon 1:30 is when we started um putting the pieces together and started uh reaching out to our local law enforcement to see uh what the status of was that of that situation so we know that there is a close proximity to the plaza which is why we do have multiple crews out in this area we're just getting this video from our Richard Dain it looks like we've got some uh it looks like some traffic that was stopped briefly and then we saw a firet truck go by uh also in this area various patrol cars staked out really just a very heavy law enforcement presence as you might expect for a situation like this on various roadways various intersections throughout the area so once again it just kind of Paints the picture of what you might expect if you do have to head home that way and we'll reiterate this again authorities say if you don't have to go home here it's not essential to be here in this part of East Charlotte please do not uh head this way we are coming up at 4:00 now and uh we started coverage and broke into programming around 1:45 uh 2:00 I should say uh with this scene and what we knew and so information is coming to The Newsroom slowly we are still waiting the official uh briefing from cmpd who says that they will let us know they have a media staging area there off the plaza and are gathering uh everybody together and we'll release more information uh once they real once they feel that the situation is stable enough but in the meantime to avoid that area uh in the 5,000 block of of gallway drive and folks in they urged to continue to shelter in place because we've not heard an all clear overall theyve seemingly been able to feel comfortable comfortable enough to lift modified lockdown that they've had at four schools that were kind of around this area so those dismissal processes are happening right now but the concern for the immediate neighborhood neighbors who are on gallway drive that is not done police are asking folks to continue to shelter in place Jane mentioned the fact that we're still trying to get an official update from cmpd itself and we have Crews staked out at those media staging locations where police have asked us to go to get information when they're able to release it however we we have just heard once again via NBC News and and two law enforcement officials who are familiar with the situation that they were able to tell NBC News a US Marshall was shot is in surgery fighting for his life and apparently three other members of this task force who might so these might be people from other agencies who were local agencies but not necessarily US Marshall were shot as well during this operation so to be clear four shot one US Deputy Marshall three other local police officers whether they were all from cmpd or other local agencies we're waiting to hear that's correct details and that's kind of piecing together what we've heard not only from this NBC news reporting but also tweets from CPD that they have put out prior to this report coming out saying that they were trying to execute this warrant in the 5,000 block of gallway Drive they had US Marshals there but they also had local law enforcement who were all part of this task force it's usually made up of multiple agencies and folks who can contribute to the task force Mission are we going to Austin right now yeah let's go back to Austin who's in front of noon uh Austin what can you what can you tell us right now yeah so again we are continuing to get updates throughout this entire situation bringing you live updates from the scene as things again start to change and they continue to change uh just about 20 minutes ago things again looked very very different a lot of cmpd officers were out here including other agencies like state troopers and also uh the sheriff's department uh Charlotte Fire was also they have kind of cleared this area a little bit but you can still see the presence uh you can see that cmpd cars as well as Charlotte fire line the street that's on Caswell right in front of novon Health we've seen a bunch of officers either race in or race out of this Hospital uh again there's things that we do know things that we do not know we are still trying to figure out exactly who was brought here what those conditions are like again we are learning things like you are we're learning things uh from those law enforcement agencies trying to put those pieces together uh so you are more informed at home and you know what is going on uh again just to reiterate a lot of uh emergency Personnel on scene they have created a perimeter around the hospital so we are staying on the edge of it and we are continuing to look and trying to see what we can kind of put together from who is coming in and out again we're right here at noon Health where uh we do know there has been a very large presence um of both cmpd officers uh different officers from around the state like state troopers as well as the sheriff's department was also part outside of the hospital uh we are making sure to keep you updated on air and online with the latest so stick with us as we are going to continue to get those pieces and put those together for you but for now we are live at novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte Austin thank you for that live update we come up on the air just after 4:00 right now and if you're just joining us here we have been following breaking news for the last couple couple of hours sources tell NBC news that a US Deputy Marshall was among those shot today while serving a warrant in East Charlotte he is now in surgery fighting for his life and we are also hearing three other members of that task force so potentially local officers were also shot because once again we are hearing that this task force was made up not just of US Marshals but also folks from other local agencies at this time officials are still trying to piece together exactly what happened so we are waiting many many details about the situation in the meantime a staging area has been set off the plaza that's close to uh Galen Drive uh gallway Drive rather in East Charlotte but let's go to our kayin hagwood right now who is off at the plaza and uh Kaylin what can you tell us at this hour well let me just walk you all through especially for viewers who are just joining us now at the 4:00 hour what it has been like in this area of Charlotte the best word to describe it is just pure chaos as the traffic moves behind me at this moment it's only just now able to move after this road was blocked off we talk about that gway drive but that's just one area so many questions left in this case in including why there were seemed to be so many different areas blocked off so many scenes so many Law Enforcement Officers cmpd we saw state troopers I saw the SWAT team medic had a mass casualty bus still so many details as to what has taken place here we know multiple officers were shot and we know this incident started as US Marshals were working to serve a warrant on gway drive if you take a look behind me and the traffic is sort of covering it there so we're going to try to get a little bit closer now that things have calmed down just a bit a little bit later uh in the broadcast for you but it is still an active scene what we're near briwood Elementary on the Plaza and what we saw is a neighborhood what appears to be a neighborhood and several Law Enforcement Officers still in that area but progress has been made this stretch of road as I said before was blocked off now things starting to get moving again I will say within the last 15 minutes we saw a cmpd crime scene investigator truck coming to this area so perhaps in the investigation stage working to learn more about exactly what happened and piece together those details but there's still so many questions we did speak to people who live in this area one person says they heard four to seven gunshots around 145 and again that's just coming from folks who live in the area trying to piece together exactly what happened others say they saw planes in the air we can still say that I'm I'm seeing a helicopter right now as I'm speaking to you want you to hear from one of those neighbors he didn't want to show his face but he wanted to share just his response to not only this but the violence that's been taking place in Charlotte it's a shot that's a nice neighborhood you know and and for here what's going on and couple of police officers have been you know fired upon and all that you just wonder you know I I prayed again this morning that if it was something that we could do to stop some of this violence yeah uh so much uh work obviously being done by law enforcement to try to reduce the violence and still um we have scenes like this and so efforts still left and work still to do um certainly there's a lot of uh prayers going out from folks in the community from that uh gentleman there as well as others for those officers um that are in the hospital at this time uh but I'm going to send things back to you we're going to try to get a closer look so you guys can see a better view of what exactly is going on but I can say if there's any uh Silver Lining at least at this moment things do seem to be calming down here in the plaza area as traffic is allowed to pass through good to hear yeah thanks Kaylin well we also have our Crews staged in areas where police have actually told us to go because this is the area they will be dispersing information uh directly so we do have a crew out there at this point yeah our Jesse Pi at the media staging area also off the plaza Jesse what can you tell us at this hour yes so we're here at the plaza off the plaza where the we are having the media staging area there isn't a set time of when officers will speak but cmpd says once things stabilize they will go ahead and let us uh give us some more information here overall they said that this is still an active shooting investigation and folks should still stay away from the area now things have been stabilized to the gway drive neighborhood but people in that immediate area are asked to shelter in place for right now and like you mentioned this is a media staging area but this is also where they told us to go out of safety um and and again same thing as far as folks staying away from the area making sure you're not blocking roadways there are several roads that are closed right now and so to make sure that they are clear so that the ambulance can get through so that officers can get through and they can do their job they're asking folks to stay home stay away from the area so that things can stay clear now I've spoken to a couple of folks while I've been in this parking lot there's one man he says he was trying to get home um trying to get to pick up his kids and so forth but unfortunately he wasn't able to get close to his uh home because again there are so many different roads that are closed um another gentleman you know he heard about at least four members of law enforcement hurt in a shooting and so he was just saying you know his support and hoping that those officers are okay and you know we're still learning more details on that but overall we're just staying here at the media staging area and we are waiting to hear more from cmpd um folks are still told to stay away from the immediate area and if you live in that neighborhood you want to shelter in place sending it back to you live Jesse Pierre Jesse thank you for that report as a matter of fact cnpd post and just 5 minutes ago again this is still an active scene please continue to avoid the area that is the 5,000 block of gallway drive and we are also keeping an eye not just on the area where the information is coming from police uh the general area where we know that this shooting happened but we're also keeping an eye on the hospitals we have seen ambulances leave from that area in a frenzy and are presumably heading to multiple area hospitals we know that our Julia Kaufman has been set up outside of Atrium health and uh we know that we've seen some patrol cars outside there as well right Julia any update from your uh side yeah we've seen multiple patrol cars blocking intersections around Atrium Health in the Dilworth area um an in an intersection we have video of from just about 15 20 minutes ago we'll show you unreal traffic that we were trying to get get through police shutting down intersections and trying to help guide cars as we now start to inch into Rush Hour uh we saw several police officers in the emergency room area as well their cars I should say uh the patrol cars were in the emergency room area they're blocking around the hospital we are on South Kings right now South Kings Drive on the other side of Atrium health and things seem to be flowing well for now um as we've reported it sounds like four officers have been injured in this shooting uh per reporting so we checked in with Atrium Health to see how many patients if any were transported here uh they are referring to medic for information and medic is of course referring to cmpd so still waiting for more details but we did see a ton of backups around Atrium Health in Dilworth but where we are on South King's Drive seems to be moving okay at least for now guys all right Julia thank you for that a lot of people are now beginning to um talk a little bit about how they're feeling what they're experiencing uh and someone talk to our own Richard daine that's right we are hearing from folks who say that they heard gunfire and so our Richard daine has spoken with a woman who was in the area and uh we wanted to share her account with you right now chaos chaos nothing but police jumping out of their cars with the guns drawn and nobody has answers like we're asking when our kids are going to be let go where are they going to be let go from school nobody can tell us anything we just know they don't know that's what we're being told they don't know a lot of questions uh out there as we wait for the briefing from cmpd to give us the latest in the meantime Austin Walker has been standing by outside of novon yeah hey guys we are continuing to learn more information and bring you those details as we learn them uh because again things continue to change but when we first got here about 45 minutes to an hour ago the scene looked very very different is as you imagine over in the plaza midw area it was very much chaotic and here there was also a different kind of chaos but I want to show you what we're looking at though as you can see behind me as the traffic is Flowing a lot better than it was about an hour ago at one point it was just a standstill mess at the corner of cwell and Rand off that's right outside of Novant uh but if you zoom in a little bit closer you can actually see cmpd cars are lining this Street as well as Charlotte fire at one point we did see a lot of state troopers out here as well as meinberg County Sheriffs um because again we are just trying to understand uh who could have been taken to this area we did reach out to novon health wondering to see um if any of those people were transported here and they referred us to cmpd uh to get that information so right now we are like a lot of people waiting to get information from cmpd but but just to recap one more time again we're on the corner of Caswell and Randolph we were just of noon Health they have created a perimeter so we are just on the outside trying to look inside and kind of see uh what all is going on at one time we did see crime scene investigators pulled up to the hospital as well as different agencies but again we are going to bring you updates uh as we do learn more so stick with us on air and online for the latest details but for now we're at novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte Austin thank you so much so we do want to recap Once Again as we await further detail an official uh release of information from cmpd that we are hearing from two law enforcement officials via NBC news that there were four total law enforcement officers who were shot while a US Marshals task force was serving this warrant on a suspect in East Charlotte happened uh around 1:30 this afternoon and uh us Marshall's H Force came under Fire by a suspect uh inside a home in that 5,000 block of gallway drive so we now know as reported to NBC news the US Deputy Marshall as well as three local police officers whether they were all from cmpd but the task force comprised of uh multiple officers from local agencies and uh the US Deputy Marshall uh shot so we are waiting to hear the status of their injuries that's why we have Austin at Novant as well as Julia at Atrium and we've seen the emergency crews there and rush to uh both of those uh hospitals a lot of folks praying for the best outcomes here for these law enforcement officers who have been wounded according to at least one of these law enforcement sources who have shared information with NBC News the US Deputy Marshall apparently went into surgery and is fighting for his life so sounding like that could be a grave situation once again this information not from cmpd we are still waiting a full update from Charlotte mecklinburg Police and we are told that we will uh get a heads up before that briefing will take place but yet to hear any concrete time for that briefing in the meantime traffic has been affected we had a number of closures including the interstates which are miles away from the actual scene but they just wanted to effectively bring in uh First Responders as quickly as they could so 77 was shut down for quite some time KJ but that since reopen we have other streets that are beginning to see a little bit of movement now but it is still quite tough out there that's right uh Jane and Vanessa we have seen some relief on the roads over the last half hour to about 45 minutes now but around 215 or so a quarter after two that's when roads were uh starting to be shut down especially some of those major rows such as I77 a large swath of I77 was shut down but that uh has since reopened right now we still have that ongoing emergency situation out there but seeing from the uh scene out there some of our traffic cameras as well as those reports coming in from Austin uh Jesse uh kayn um we're certainly seeing traffic is moving here and there but still a little frantic but as you get or have to travel near the hospital system say no vont as well as Atrium um you may want to avoid those areas or be prepared to be redirected if we do have some lane closure some road closure some roow still may be blocked um by some of the hospital systems Meanwhile we're seeing some road closures this uh perhaps may be updated at this point but uh Eastway Drive uh at the plaza some of these roads have since reopened but we still have that touch and go uh slow traffic traffic is moving slowly through some of these areas especially over in East Charlotte and South charlot right now uh due to this ongoing uh situation but let me show you the maps and you'll get a clear picture of what's Happening uh in terms of delays out there so we are seeing some green but notice embedded within some of the green uh notice uh 74 right here this is going to fall under that orange and red so slow a little touch and go here and there uh as well as some of the other roads like Randolph uh Park Road uh headed towards uh 77 some of these neighborhood streets are certainly seeing some delays traffic is being rerouted of course we're coming up now on about 5:00 p.m. so about A4 after 4: we're going to combine what's happening with some of those delays we already had added to that we're going to have that evening Rush after school so on and so forth so this could uh uh prolong uh getting to your destination as we'll have some of those ongoing congestions out there meanwhile taking a look this is 77 at wion and traffic is moving southbound we're looking southbound but this part here northbound was shut down uh for about an hour so but now you can see traffic is moving uh smoothly notice the school bus U moving right there as well so hopefully everyone is getting from point A to point B safely uh despite the emergency scene and the situation happening across the area it is having that ripple effect on traffic but we are seeing some breaks here and there doesn't mean you have to stay shut indoors but just know that if you are going to get out be prepared for delays be prepared to be rerouted and redirected uh just because some rows may still be closed that's okay Jay thank you so much we want to get straight to some images that are coming to us from a neighbor Jane yeah you can see there in the middle of the screen um it is a re it's from a ring across the street from a neighbor they've given us permission to use these images uh but in that green box uh it is a person with a gun so this is from U the perspective of a neighbor with a ring doorbell and they always capture those images so these are there is just one of the still pictures that we've seen um we're waiting to get the the video uh but that is what the scene looked like from a neighbor's house so very scary and and they reported that they can hear gunshots um even we've heard that people have heard streets away from this uh 5,000 block of gallway that could hear gunshots and the helicopters and the sirens uh and scared to come out of their house that's right and we do want to remind folks that if you are in the area you are urged to continue to stay in your homes because police say this is still an active scene and they are concerned for safety for folks in this area as we mentioned of course we're still waiting to get the video itself and so as we get more insights from that video we will continue to bring that to you uh so we will go ahead and move on to another one of our crews on the ground our Colin Mayfield has gone out to the Operation Center hi Colin what were you able to gather in the last hour or so hey Vanessa and Jane yeah not much on my end we did notice that there are a lot of people on their uh porches on the sidewalks headed out from the plaza uh the plaza behind us even itself is still pretty backed up so please stay away from this area we're still seeing Snoopy above us cmpd helicopter circling uh this area multiple times so this is continuing to be an active scene as you said four officers hurt in this investigation one of those being a US Deputy Marshall um who is in surgery at this time we did pass briwood elementary school and I got to say the line of parents try to get in to get to their students uh it was very long and it still seems to be that way on the plaza at this moment so as we continue to be out here we'll continue to tell you that uh please say if you can um cmpd will hopefully update Us in the next hour or so with some updated information but this scene continues to be active and I'm not sure we're going to be going anywhere for quite some time Vanessa and Jane all right thank you Colin for that update traffic is moving behind Colin a little bit there along the plaza was loosening up in some areas he mentioned uh briwood Elementary that was one of four schools according to CMS that was under a modified lockdown uh the Ms did receive the all clear as far as lockdowns go but the four schools that were mentioned include briwood Academy Devonshire Elementary School co-trained Collegiate and Lawrence or elementary school but since those lockdowns have been lifted as you can imagine parents concerned parents trying to get their kids and traffic part of uh the mix here it's going to be a little bit more challenging than on a a normal school day to collect your kids and go home so true and just to recap here we are now approaching the bottom of the hour in the 4:00 hour as we've been following this reported shooting at um a home in the 5500 block of gallway drive that is in East Charlotte not too far from the plaza we are hearing that this transpired around the 1:00 hour involving us Marshall's task force which was trying to execute a warrant at a home in this neighbor neighborhood and unfortunately resulted in gunfire a suspect police officers say fired upon them and injured what we're hearing at this point for law enforcement officers so really we are coming up almost on three hours since we started uh Gathering the information little information that we could from this active scene right now let's go to our Jesse Pierre who is at that media staging area off the plaza Jesse what can you tell us so yes we are here at the staging area and you know things are still getting set up but as of right now cnpd says they are waiting for things to stabilize before they speak um the message is still the same for folks to stay away from that immediate area on gway Drive we're actually the staging area right off of uh the plaza and um and Milton Road and just about a mile away from this active shooting investigation um so not too far away um police just overall saying that you know folks should avoid the area even though that even though the active uh shooting investigation is contained to that neighborhood if you do live in that immediate area you should stay home now again there are still some closures that folks need to be concerned about so um I actually spoke to a couple of people who were parked in this lot and just kind of waiting or weren't able to get home um I spoke to one father he was waiting for uh a lockdown to be lifted for his from his child school before he can go and get his child so you know this is kind of an area where folks have kind of been you know hanging until they can get to their home because of the closures and because of um just just the activity going on um so again the message from cmpd right now is just to stay away from the area um again also to keep the roadways clear um we have police officers who are working and trying to get their job done and then ambulances making sure that they have clear paths to get where they need to go and when it comes to using public transportation this is a busy road but you know there you could be facing some La so if you're waiting a while for you know the bus and so forth you know it is because of all of this going on um you know we have learned that at least four members of law enforcement were shot and taken to the hospital um a few people that I've spoken to in this lot this media staging area just sending their support um hoping those officers are okay as well um but you know we're just kind of waiting to get more details from cmpd they said that they will give us a heads up um hopefully a good 30 minutes or so forth before they are ready to speak but as of right now they just are reminding folks that this is an active shooting investigation and folks to stay safe to stay away um and they'll give us details as it comes about sending it back live to you Jesse Pierre all right thank you so much Jesse we are also now getting some live images from closer to the scene itself there is a 55,000 block of gallway Drive our crew is set up there and as you can see from this live picture now how uh busy this scene is with Cruz uh Crews there cmpd we have the flashing lights from medic an officer walking up the street right now and we are told this the main scene is just up this road from our uh photo journalist who is on scene there will uh thanks for that live shot right now as they are trying to talk to neighbors but at the same time be safe about it and that's why cmpd is urging people to avoid this area and uh set up the media staging area way uh a good distance from this Main Street yeah and as you can imagine with a scene that is still kind of in flux I mean remember neighbors here are still being told to shelter in place there is only so close our crews can get but we are going to try to be as safe as possible and get you the best images the closest images so you can see what is going on but as Jane alluded to here so many patrol cars out there it looks like we still have ambulances on scene and we are seeing quite a large presence I can't remember the last time we've seen such a presence like this uh covering a scene but once again a very concerning situation that we're hearing involving as we mentioned four Law Enforcement Officers potentially have been shot this is according to two officials who have told this to NBC News a US Deputy Marshall who was wounded went into surgery and was it sounded like not in great condition fighting for his life were the words used to describe his condition as well as three other officers who were part of this task force possibly with local agencies who were assisting the task force uh who were wounded as well cmpd just seems to be U putting it out there constantly that this is still an active scene they want to emphasize uh for people to avoid this area uh but it is isolated now to this area where as an hour or so ago it was uh had a Rippling effect you know the plaza very close to here as well as a lot of other surface streets and businesses uh surrounding this East Charlotte neighborhood so it is to this area but people they're told to shelter in place as well as uh avoid the area if you can a lot of people are curious and uh they want to get through but uh they kept media away as well because this is still uh quite dangerous potentially now you mentioned the proximity to the plaza that is where we find our Kay and hagwood who's been able to report on some of what she has been seeing at least from her perspective this area of the plaza yeah guys I mean when we talk about gway drive that's actually four or five minutes away from where I am here on the Plaza and still you can see a scena set up on this street this is actually really a a a mild version of what we have been seeing all day traffic was not really able to pass through this area of the plaza in so many different areas of town we talked about how I77 or a part of it had been shut down for a period as well as other roads near the area and it raises so many questions as to what exactly happened in this case normally when we have a scene or you know a SWAT situation as we did see SWAT who was out here earlier today uh it's it's it it is isolated to one area and so we know that gway drive is where this all got started related to a warrant um and US Marshals working to issue a warrant whenever that shooting took place but still so many questions as to why there are so many um I don't I don't even want to call them many scenes because this is obviously a large police presence um in other places uh for Neighbors who live in this area because this really is this part of the plaza is just a series of different neighborhoods Brierwood Elementary is tucked away here and a lot of parents were leaving uh with their kids in the bus lines with so many questions um concerned about exactly what took place in this incident but the people who live in this area I think Colin mentioned it folks have just been kind of sitting out on their porch uh some folks have come out and got their cell phones taking videos wanting to know exactly what took place here I spoke to a woman who said that she was just concerned for her kids she has her kids inside and she's just watching because really that's all that she can do uh so many folks I mean watching us watching from uh their vantage point of where they can see I mean imagine how it would feel for a family to be told hey you need a shelter in place and not really having those answers so of course we're we're hoping to get more clarity on exactly what took place I spoke to another neighbor who said he heard four to seven shots around 145 still waiting to get more details from cmpd on exactly when this all unfolded and exactly what happened but I can tell you about an hour ago uh we were just a short distance uh further along on the Plaza um and we actually saw what I believe or what smelt to me um like some kind of gunm smoke or or powder something like that it made a huge huge Haze in the air and it and it really I mean I was choked up as I was walking away we tried to get to a safer location um helicopters up above there's still at least one copter above the location where we are right now and so there's so many questions into exactly what took place in this incident and um as we talk about these emergency crews they'll have a long investigation up ahead because while there are Law Enforcement Officers now in the hospital fighting for their life uh there's still a long investigation piecing together exactly what took place here and that work I'm sure will go well into the night guys kayin thank you for that perspective there of the plaza uh like she said four or five minutes away from the the scene there on gway drive but that's just the effect that it's had here in the East Charlotte if not the pretty much the whole Charlotte Metro that's right and as we approach the bottom of the hour here we want to take you back out live here to the area near the scene so this is near gallway drive and we do see a very heavy law enforcement presence out there as well as we can see emergency responders like medic who has an ambulance staged out at this scene and we are just waiting for more information directly from cmpd but they have promised to give that information when in their words the situation stabilizes enough meantime though we are hearing um some concerning updates from NBC News who has heard from two officials who've been able to provide some information saying that us Deputy Marshall IS F fur their life in surgery right now as well as three other officers local police uh that officer told NBC news local police could be cmpd could be other uh law enforcement from our local agencies here in in the in and around the Queen City but we do know now four officers are uh have been shot and and the degree of their injuries is what we're working and waiting to hear more F and just a reminder of course we're mentioning this us Deputy Marshall who was there on scene we are told by cmpd that this all sparked from a US Marshals task force operation that was being executed there on gallway drive at a home and this was a task force involving not only US Marshals but also local law enforcement and apparently during the execution of this warrant they say the suspect fired upon them and that is how we arrived at the situation where we are at this time of course still waiting for more details and our Colin Mayfield is at the media staging area also waiting to hear more information hi Colin what can you add to the uh what we know now yeah no no new details to share we're still at the media staging area in a Family Dollar parking lot along the plaza behind me you can see Cats the bus right on time hopefully you can hear me going to continue my report but um the cmpd helicopter does continue to Circle it does seem like it's an active scene I was saying I'll wait here for the bus to pass I was saying about 10 15 20 minutes ago that when we came through the plaza and turned on this side of the plaza now the scene directly behind us uh a couple of maybe a mile away or so uh there were a lot of people on The Plaza still briwood Academy seemed to be opening up obviously CMS uh released those kids and and lifted those lockdowns but parents were still trying to turn uh right or left onto the plaza which was still jamming things up here now as we see it a lot of people have been coming to this car wash or this Sito uh I think people are still trying to figure out what's going on Kaitlin alluded to a lot of folks just kind of scurrying around their property or maybe just kind of staying out on their uh porches that's still happening and I think folks are just trying to understand you know what's going on you alluded to it Vanessa the police president we haven't seen something like this uh I haven't seen it in in my career as well especially here in Charlotte um so this is a serious situation especially as you've said multiple times NBC News uh reports now that potentially four officers uh were shot and injured so we'll continue to keep it locked here um on the Plaza and wait for any new information from cmpd thank you so much and we'll remind folks that Colin is actually at the spot we've dispatched him there intentionally at that location because that is where cmpd presumably will give us the big update when it comes they've promised to give us a heads up and of course we'll bring that to you when it happens still looking at a live picture right now from our crew on scene close to the main uh part of the scene gallway Drive 5500 block of gallway where all of this unfolded in the 1:00 hour uh large presence there we can see the front end of the fire truck as well as medic with their flashing lights and then several cmpd units blocking off that street so they continue to put out there the message that they want people to avoid this area even though the threat has been isolated now to just the 5500 block of gallway drive and so we're seeing with our very eyes of course the road closure there on gallway but our KJ Jacobs has been following other reported closures or areas where you're seeing it will be a trouble spot for folks as we do get closer and closer to the heart of rush hour so KJ what are you able to share with us that's right Vanessa and Jane this event happening right now is having huge imp implications on traffic across the area we felt the impact over the last couple of hours now but now that we know more information and that it's mainly confined to gallway drive folks trying to get home if you're live streaming us or if you want to leave home perhaps get to work or get out for this evening yeah we just saw a person walking in the neighborhood probably because they can't drive due to those road closures so taking it to the immediate area for gallway drive and some of those nearby connectors you can see Shannon House Drive Road close at gallway drive and Grafton Drive Ruth drive this road is closed from Cary Lane to gallway drive and at gallway drive we have a road closed from Ruth drive to Denson place so some people I know when we cover severe weather events say if there's a tornado or uh roads are blocked due to down trees people can drive as far as they can they get out and they walk the rest of the away and sometimes you have to uh walk home so this may be one of those situations in order to get to your house due to those road closures you just may have to walk if you want to leave have someone pick you up perhaps that is an option as well but right now near the immediate scene we do have these ongoing road closures in and around a gallway drive due to this investigation that is ongoing guys and I think of course it's important to remind folks that at one point we did have Majors that were closed and backing up so we saw a lot of issues with Independence and with 77 and as someone who was Prior done traffic reporting I know that sometimes it could take a while for that stuff to recover so I would just urge folks to make sure you're planning even if you're not going to be in that immediate East Charlotte scene absolutely and now it's mixing in with the afternoon rush so I can't imagine it improving anytime soon I want to show you an image now this is from Neighbors ring bell uh ring doorbell and uh you can see there in the middle of your screen it's outline in a green box that is a person with a gun according to the neighbor uh we're waiting to get the the video from them but this that was what they were looking at uh so quite a scary scene In the Heat of the Moment this afternoon as it was unfolding there uh in the Suburban area of of East Charlotte and just a reminder for folks we we've showed this image before we are working to get the video itself the neighbor has given us permission to show the still images and we're working to get the video so perhaps a full video could give us more insight into what we're actually seeing on the scene we're unable to confirm is this is this the so-called suspect who was involved the person who was having the search warrant executed on them we don't know any of that information all we are getting our kind of peacemeal updates images um you know anecdotal information from Neighbors but we wanted to share with you in real time as we're getting these details we are we've heard from a number of officials including representative Alma Adams this is her District she posted an hour or so ago I've been made aware of the active shooter incident on gallway Drive in East Charlotte and am in touch with local law enforcement and the mayor's office I am praying for the injured officers and their families we also have from Senator Tom Tillis weighing in an attack in Charlotte on our brave law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and serve us all Susan and I are praying for everyone's safety and Governor Roy Cooper also posted on social media I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area and we have offered State resources to help we also hear from the York County Sheriff's Office so a a law enforcement agency in the Charlotte Metro but not necessarily in Charlotte correct right yeah York County I mean they just say that they're ready to assist their brothers and sisters at cmpd any way they can and so they say here that the sheriff is monitoring the situation and and they are praying for positive outcomes and we had mentioned this before but it is not unusual to see Aid come in from partner agencies or neighboring agencies when we have a very impactful situation like this I can hearken back right to the South Park fire that's probably the largest scene that I have in my recent memory where we had um Charlotte Fire but also a lot of neighboring agencies who pitched in to help because it was such a large scene and even in the days to come because we know that this is going to be a staffing impact a staffing toll an emotional toll to cmpd and so they might need some support in the coming days as we've been reporting U four up to four law enforcement uh officers may have been shot that's why we have both our Austin Walker as well as Julie Coffman posted outside hospitals Austin outside of novon you've been seeing a little bit of activity in the last hour so Austin what can you tell us now yes we've been on scene for about an hour and a half outside of noon where we've seen this the area Chang almost every 5 or 10 minutes when we first got here and it was a sea and a slew of cars I just want to show you that video what you saw when we first got here you can see uh police officers and uh state troopers racing through this area all along uh that road into the hospital also out of the hospital now with that being said we've seen a lot of different agencies in Novant uh coming to the hospital itself we've seen a bunch of cmpd cars as well as state troopers meinberg County Sheriffs uh Charlotte Fire and many more agencies also here and we also did see uh crime scene investigators also outside but if we take a look right now uh very different than from an hour ago as you can see behind me uh still cmpd and Charlotte Fire still unseen I'm not sure you can see a little bit farther but if you go past that biggest tree in the distance there are about 5 to 10 CMP officers outside uh they have created a per perimeter in this area so we cannot get up there uh we've been trying to ask novon for any information CU we do know somebody one of the individuals that did get shot is in surgery uh we asked if they are in surgery here at Novant so they've directed us back to cmpd and are now anxiously awaiting for any updates uh like Jesse Pier has said they are still trying to get uh the information in order and they're trying to make sure everything is cooled down so they can give all the information uh at one time so it is extremely organized but again we're outside of noon Health where uh we did see a very big scene a very big presence that was about 45 minutes to an hour ago since then has died down this area at the Caswell intersection and Randol was a parking lot at at some point a lot of cars uh jam-packed and slammed together in this area not much movement but again now as you can see behind me it is moving rather smooth but as we hit that 5:00 hour as those are trying to get home from work that could be a different uh scenario so stick with us right here at wcnc.com and on uh on air at WCNC for the latest so you can plan out your day and we can keep you informed along the way but for now we are live from novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte thanks a lot Austin we have seen uh he has seen a lot of Troopers go to that scene as well as other emergency responders this video from earlier today when things really were were getting heated and people U mer First Responders were uh going to that scene there uh at first and gallway drive and we'll remind folks right we've been watching this scene now this the situation unfold for probably about an hour at this point point and over that period of time we have seen so many developments so many different impacts from this one scene in East Charlotte the ripple effect so right as we watch this medic ambulance ushering what we presume might be one of the officers who was wounded off to the hospital we saw road closures we saw major roadways close down big backups as they tried to close off these roadways and Make Way for these emergency vehicles to get as promptly as possible to the hospitals where once again we have our crew station we have folks over at Atrium Health we have folks over at noon Health both Crews reported seeing uh patrol cars there and and different law enforcement response in those areas so we continue to monitor from those scenes and as we approach here the quarter hour 4:45 we will just remind folks that once again we are keeping an eye on this scene involving what we're hearing could be four law enforcement officers shot we heard from Austin outside of Novant hospital Julia Kaufman's been monitoring things outside of Atrium uh in the dillworth area let's check in with Julia right now J hey guys yeah we were here um about an hour ago when traffic was really backed up around Atrium Health intersections were shut down by police leading to the emergency room driving by the emergency room we did see officer uh patrol cars there as well but now things are moving much better of course we have the typical rush hour traffic in the Dilworth area around Atrium Health uh but right now it seems the intersections are back open this is what it looked like about an hour ago when we were trying to inch by to get to the uh media staging area of Atrium Health as you can see cars were backed up police had intersections shut down and that was so that emergency vehicles could get to the hospital as quickly as possible as We Know numerous officers were shot um at the scene so they wanted to make sure things were clear so they could get the help and the medical treatment they needed as quickly as possible uh we did ask Atrium Health if any patients uh were transported here from gowe um and if so how many they could not confirm they can't share any information with us really uh we've asked several different questions uh but they referred all questions to medic and medic is referring us to cmpd so as Austin said we're all anxiously awaiting an update from police but as we know they have their hands full and it seems like uh many inside the hospital may have their hands full as well so we'll keep an eye on things and let you know if we have any updates soon thank you thank you so much Julia and we just heard from cmpd posting again on social media this is just their continuing message that this is still an active scene it's on your screen right now you can read it uh please continue to avoid the area referring to the 5,500 block of gallway Drive in East Charlotte all confirmed information will be released by cmpd public affairs as it becomes available just posted at 4:44 now we are 4:45 so following this now for about 3 hours that is correct three hours still waiting for a whole lot of information we are getting peac mail information not only from cmpd but also various law enforcement officials who have been confirming things to NBC news our crews on the ground who are confirming visual information that they are seeing that they are able to confirm to us and relay back to us as we take you live out to gallway drive a quick recap of what we know so far around the 1:00 hour US Marshals were out with their Task Force at a home in this area when they say a suspect fired upon them injuring multiple officers and Jane we've heard once again some of the peace information peace meal information trickling in since then right we don't don't uh know if it was uh one person with a gun or if it was more than one person uh but again this happening in the 1:00 hour and that this has been a gun a dangerous situation so cmpd telling people to uh stay away from this street although they have just now isolated the threat to this one neighborhood street on gallway Drive yeah folks they are being urged to continue to shelter in place if you are a neighbor in this area and we'll remind folks as we are kind of sitting in a vacuum of information we are seeing that there are folks who might be reporting other things maybe purported eyewitnesses if you will reporting different figures different numbers of law enforcement officers who might be shot than we are we are only going to report what has been confirmed to us we want to get over to Austin Walker who's now seeing something Austin what are we watching yeah yeah hey guys we just saw about three or four cmpd patrol cars with light and Sirens pulling into novon again we do not know exactly uh what this could mean we've actually asked novon Health multiple times trying to see if they've they've taken any transports from that scene to the hospital they again have uh taken us back to cmpd for any information and like Julia has said like we've all said we are waiting anxiously to hear any update from cmpd uh but they say that is coming and they say they promise to give us the information when they think things have cooled down in that area but just to walk you through again just in the last 20 seconds we saw about uh three or four I want to say four cmpd cars with lights and Sirens pulling into the hospital we're not sure what that means but they are um heading into this direction um again uh very very similar to what we saw about an hour ago when it was all light and Sirens a lot of uh different uh agencies across meinberg County um seene at novon Health again we saw cmpd Charlotte Fire uh meinberg County Sheriff's Department um state troopers and much much more crime scene was also onene at the hospital again we're just trying to learn more information and bring that to you as soon as we uh we learn more but for now again we're at noon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte Austin with the very latest observation there are no vont and uh just the latest Tweet now from cmpd saying that the cnpd SWAT team is still working to clear the residents residents should expect to continue to see a heavy police presence in the area posted at 4:46 as we continue to wait for a press conference from uh police meantime our crews are staked out across the area different areas we believe the most information might come from our Kalin hagwood has been out by the plaza and you're getting an interesting perspective kayin because as you mentioned before you said you're not very very close to the scene but you're in the area and you are still able to see a whole lot yeah five minutes away from that area where they say that this all started when that warrant was issued and the shooting started to take place and yet there are scenes in other areas I mean this is the plaza near briwood Elementary and you can see officers still out there um working this scene in in quite large numbers and this is actually smaller than what we saw earlier this road was blocked off um probably about an hour or two ago traffic able to move through now at a pretty steady rate and even the elementary school able to let out um after c u after CMS had a lockdown issued uh it's been pretty scary for folks who live in this area I spoke to one person who said that he heard four to seven gunshots um still unclear exactly what took place and that was really sort of the scary part uh I spoke to another person who said that uh you know they were just concerned about the violence seeing the helicopters and being uh informed of all of this from uh people who live in the area calling them to ask are you okay I want you to hear from one woman um who I spoke to she didn't want to show her face but she just kind of shared sort of the fear for herself and her children as they um as they watched the scene unfold my understandment um say chaos happened with uh maybe a neighbor who shot back at a cop or something of that magnitude I know of course if it's all these cops cars again it had to be something serious but from what I've heard from other people that um some stuff happened with a officer shooting some officers unfortunately and I want to walk you guys through what today has been like because as you see these different different areas and we have been here since this all started just hours ago um it can maybe feel like especially if you're driving through town that things are somewhat calm but that is not the case this has been complete chaos is the best way to describe it all that's happening as many kids were just letting out of school and you just saw officer after officer as we were trying to get to the scene we were blocked on road after Road I77 blocked at one point during today um and family stopping us in our news vehicle asking what is going on do you have any answers at that time all we could tell them was that it was an active investigation you know we get a lot of reports into our Newsroom and we want to make sure that we're accurate in what we're sharing and so that's why as Vanessa was telling you uh that we want to make sure that we're sharing you nothing but the facts especially as the situation develops but I can tell you right now here at the scene it's still very active we know that multiple law enforcement officers are in the hospital we know that this all started as they were attempting to serve a warrant for an individual or maybe multiple individuals and we know that shots were fired uh still working to learn more and piece this together something that law enforcement officers will certainly be doing throughout the night here uh at this location and other areas and as uh as I send things back to you guys my one of my questions is really just we know this all happened again five minutes away from here and yet there's still a scene at this area and this road was blocked off um for quite some time so I I'll be interested to hear the answers as to exactly um how these all all these different areas piece together in terms of this investigation and what's taking place yeah seemingly there is a concern for for the scene that would does remain active Kalin and and yeah they're clearly casting a wide net here we just heard a few moments ago as you mentioned Jane right from cmpd they're still working to clear this home absolutely uh SWAT team is still there trying to clear the residence this is another angle of the the scene there on gallway Drive uh from another part of the street in a suburban area but you can see that still so many cmpd units are on scene uh that is medic as well as fire department they're in the distance another medic uh van pulling up to uh the street with its lights flashing not too far from there we have our Trisha Woodard who's standing by so obviously we see behind you it looks like the roadway is closed and impassible with all of the law enforcement and and different emergency responders what are you seeing out there absolutely Vanessa right now we are pretty much in the thick of it all this is where it's all happening we are on kilder and Joyce drive very very active scene heavy police presence I'm going to step out of the way just to give you a better perspective of what we are looking at now we did speak to some neighbors who are still waiting to go home who live on this street some of them say they heard the shot when they first rang out I spoke to another neighbor who said she was picking up some of of her kids from school seeing lots of police cars swerve over into the lane trying to get here to this scene some folks say they heard gunshots in this neighborhood and it's pretty common but they say they've never seen a scene quite like this before we still have folks parked over in churches parking lots and hanging out on the outer skirts of this area until all of this calms down they say this is a pretty scary scene especially for it to happen so close to home now as of right now we have hav't gotten a lot of details about when this road will reopen but of course as we continue to learn more we'll be sure to keep you updated reporting live for WCNC Charlotte I'm Trisha Woodard and we are waiting for that press conference from cnpd Trisha to get more of those details about this uh incident that all unfolded around 1:00 1:30 this afternoon we've been on it since about uh 1445 as we heard that shots were fired and officers were fired at not knowing at that time the extent of their injuries that's right and we've been waiting ever since for cmpd to provide a fuller update they've been primarily concerned it seems like with securing the neighborhood itself with the safety of the neighbors around this home where this warrant was being executed and so we are hearing they're continuing to Echo this message of stay in your homes if you're in this area be safe do not try to come to this area if you don't have to be here as you can see this is this is a m massive scene and um we are of course waiting for the updates from cmpd but have heard from NBC News who was confirmed with two law enforcement officials familiar with the situation a US Deputy of Marshall was among those shot today while this warrant was being served and three others of the task force local police officers were shot as well we had heard that the US Marshall was in surgery fighting for his life as of a 4:00 update so this update from NBC news that we're relaying to you right now came in at 4:00 the the US Marshall was still alive is still alive so that's the very latest that we have confirmed um and so we await with our crews once again spread out in different areas including an area where we believe police will be briefing us soon yes they've told us they've set up a media staging area and we wait for this situation to stabilize before releasing any more details in the meantime uh Colin Mayfield is out on the Plaza awaiting for that briefing Colin what can you uh tell us at this hour yeah we're at the media staging area um at the Family Dollar here on the Plaza we're just awaiting there are a number of other city leaders that are here city of Charlotte um fire department as well and we're waiting from cmpd Pio from cmpd to get here to get more information cmpd uh just putting out as you guys talked about last 15 minutes cmpd SWAT team is still on scene they're working to clear this residence it sounds like um just in the last 5 minutes or so the helicopter still is overhead but it kind of stopped doing circles from where we're at the scene is obviously behind us um about a mile or so uh back there but we're still seeing um some remnants I saw a State Trooper speed past us here on the Plaza so it's a situation that I would say is still not over with and obviously we're still waiting for those newest details from cmpd to to gather all the information about what happened uh around the 1:00 hour now so we're going on a couple of hours now since we've been out here kind of monitoring this situation so once we see this press conference start and get some more details I will make sure you guys know at that moment uh about some of those answers I hope we can get those those questions answered for you Jane and Vanessa are you able to hear me Colin we just got an update from cmpd and I'm going to read it to you in full since it contains a lot of information and Jane perhaps you want to jump in here we're hearing from cmpd the residents on gway Drive is now clear M the area is safe residents no longer need to shelter in place at least one shooting suspect was located deceased at the residence after clearing the scene and they go on with further information Jane I don't know if you can see that okay cmpd is questioning now on your screen there too uh questioning two other occupants of the home cmpd and other law enforcement agencies will be at the scene to conduct the investigation some roadways in the neighborhood will remain closed please remain patient and cooperate with officers an update will be provided in a media briefing as soon as possible so yes uh Vanessa we just got that a minute ago so to recap here as as we see it now as we approach the top of the hour we're almost to the 5:00 hour it looks like the shelter in place has been cleared for residents on gallway drive after this shooting took place during the execution of a warrant at a home there on gallway Drive uh this warrant apparently was being executed around the 1:00 hour that's when we're told the shooting was happening involving um injuries to from what we're Gathering four Law Enforcement Officers a US Deputy Marshall and three officers who are with local agencies who were shot and it sounds like the US Marshall had to have surgery at the hospital and could be in in a in a tough condition right now tough medical condition right fighting for their life as uh we have been told um emergency Personnel clear now at the Hawthorne Elizabeth Gold Line will also resume so uh as the situation stabilizes uh a word that cmpd used uh it seems that Transportation public transportation will get back online here as well as streets will reopen although the residents or gallway drive that 5,500 block of gallway Drive south of Milton Road that will remain closed and as we saw from the scene there it was very active still very large uh presence of medic and fire department as well as law enforcement agencies all right we are here at 5:00 we are following this breaking news if you're just joining us sources telling NBC News a US Deputy Marshall was among those shot today while serving a warrant he is now in surgery fighting for his life with three other members of that task force uh the local officers were also shot at this time officials still trying to piece together exactly what happened so we want to take you through a timeline if you will of what we know so far as as things have been confirmed and we've witnessed things with our own eyes but 145 you could see that is when cmpd issues the severe alert so this is when we start to realize that there's something very serious happening you see around 208 we're hearing of multiple victims being transported and then at 312 is when we hear impacts to Local Schools so we had four schools that went under a modified lockdown Jane that's right finally lifted at 3:41 so just before 4:00 with parents trying to get their kids and then cmpd just clearing the residents here uh in the last few minutes on that 5,500 block saying that the suspect has now uh been deceased let's go to our Austin Walker who is outside of novon monitoring things as we've heard four officers were shot and so we remind you uh Austin was reporting on seeing multiple Crews coming in there you are Austin we can see you now yeah yeah hey guys as you said we've been here for like an hour hour and a half just monitoring the situation uh things have changed and calmed down quite a bit I'm going to show you what it looks like right now and as you can see uh it used to be a grid of traffic not many things were moving in this area but within the last 45 minutes that has uh thankfully changed but if you zoom in to noon you can actually see uh emergency Personnel are still on scene cnpd here as well as Charlotte fire at one point we saw the sheriff's department also here state troopers and much much more we actually got some very intense video about 10 minutes into our stay right here you saw those state troopers just zooming into the hospital at the same time many p uh people and uh law enforcement agencies also moving out uh very quickly we're actually in the corner of Caswell and Randol again just off of that noon Health Campus um again it was very very hectic out here at one point a lot of people trying to wonder exactly what was going on uh we do know that one of the individuals who was shot they're uh in surgery right now uh we're not sure of that condition as of right now but we asked novon if how many or who was taken to the hospital from that scene and they did not confirm with us they said that more information should be coming so make sure to update you and we learn more they actually directed us also back to cmpd and again we are waiting for information from cmpd at this point but just to run you through it again we're outside Novant where we saw a very big presence from multiple agencies across the county uh and in the state um we are going to continue to monitor this location in this area and bring you the updates as we learn more uh so you're well informed but for now we're we're live at Novant Austin Walker WCNC charlot all right thank you Austin and cmpd again tweeting just in the last few minutes the latest what's happening in that East Charlotte neighborhood saying that the residence on gallway Drive is now clear and the area is safe residents no longer needing a shelter in place at least one shooting suspect was located deceased at the residence after clearing the scene cmpd is questioning two other occupants of the home cmpd and other law enforcement agencies will be at the scene to conduct the investigation some roadways in the neighborhood will remain closed please remain patient and cooperate with officers an update will be provided in a media briefing as soon as possible but that uh shelter in place place again has been lifted now of course very interested to see if we start to see a dispersal of some of the law enforcement presence that we're seeing in a wider radius from the scene because as Arin hagwood had pointed out before she was she said five minutes away from the scene over at the plaza and she was still seeing a lot of patrol cars out there and so I am curious as as now the police have officially cleared the residence in question that was the residents of concern whether you're starting to see a lifting of the scene out there where you are Kalin my understanding um say chaos happen officers to move away from this can you guys hear me if you guys can hear me uh we definitely have seen a a clearing in quite a bit from law enforcement from this area on the pl plaza near Brierwood Elementary um quite a bit of progress when it comes to getting these cars back up and moving after what was really uh no better word to describe it but a chaotic start to the day um if I take you through exactly what we experienced I mean just hours ago this road was blocked off we wouldn't have been able to even get this close um and as we were just a little bit further away we were concerned for our own safety because there was so much going on there were helicopters up above there was a a medic mass casualty bus uh there were uh state troopers who were here meinberg County Sheriff's Office was here um and as well as uh you know multiple cmpd officers and just uh law enforcement flying um you know through the street as safely as what they could to get to the scene after we learned that multiple Law Enforcement Officers had been shot while the US Marshals were working to serve a warrant um and as those more as more details come in uh now we know that the the media team over there doing what they can to try to get us that information after what was really um a very scary circumstance for for uh for folks who were just passing through and neighbors alike I want you to hear from one of the folks who lives in this area about what that experience was like for them understandment um say chaos happened with uh maybe a neighbor who shot back at a cop or something of that magnitude I know of course if it's all these cops cars again it had to be something serious but from what I've heard from other people that um some stuff happened with a officer shooting some officers unfortunately yeah folks uh a lot of folks out here have been kind of sitting on their porch they were asked to shelter in place and so uh that woman in particular not wanting to show her face but uh wanting to uh just kind of protect her kids her kids were inside as she just sort of watched hoping to learn more just from what she could see um as we kind of show you a view down there uh at Shannon Park that area you see some officers starting to leave now uh that area only just now beginning to get cleared up after uh everything that took place today um and and again neighbor saying they heard four to seven shots uh coming from from these different areas this is this scene where I'm at actually about 5 minutes away from gway Drive where everything apparently got started so wanting to know exactly what how these scenes connect because there was a large law enforcement pres presence in this area we know part of I77 was blocked off for a period of time as well so a huge law enforcement response obviously um a very sad situation as officers work to I'll let that pass obviously a very sad situation as uh as those officers work to recover at the hospital kayn so many aspects of the city affected by this uh police activity thank you for that report there uh off the plaza uh we are waiting for this presser we are we've been told that it's going to happen around 5:40 and our Colin Mayfield is at the media staging area awaiting for the live briefing Colin [Music] yeah ladies that's what I was going to tell you the op pressor is for 540 um so we're waiting to hear more on that seemingly though as you guys were talking about the scene being cleared on gallway it seems like this area the tension that we were feeling in terms of the traffic uh the people that were walking around kind of just eased up uh I won't say it's a coincidence right but it's what happened behind us with the scene kind of clearing uh traffic seems to be slowly freeing people aren't kind of standing by and watching things we're not necessarily on the other side of plaza where the scene is uh where I believe Kalin is closest to uh so we're not able to see if people are still out Milling about in their neighborhood or maybe into their yard um but I would assume from what we're seeing here like I said the tension is gone people are starting to come out a little bit more and I think more people have come out into our parking lot as well because they've seen more news crews here so we expect to learn more information at 5:40 I'm sure we'll take that live we'll be here to cover that and then have um some interesting talk to see uh what happened and why this has been so Hush Hush for so many hours from cmpd hopefully we'll have those answers for the next couple of minutes Jane Vanessa yeah indeed we will be taking that live we know that folks want to get that information Colin thank you by the way um as quickly as possible and we know that it can be frustrating right a lot of us are very concerned about these officers and folks also want to know about the roadway impacts and when is my neighborhood going going to go off of lockdown but I know that police say that they had been trying to get this situation stabilized before re releasing some of that information which is why we've been giving them that Grace and that patience to GA the information on the side of caution as well and keeping people safe uh if they don't have to be out they didn't want to but we saw there in Collins live shot a couple people walking across the street so uh we here as viewers just kind of gain a sense of okay I think uh people are feeling a little bit more comfortable and curious about what what's happening in their neighborhood we've had a lot of traffic today um a lot of these closures Kaylin mentioned it 77 shut down for a while because of uh the situation there in East Charlotte and it is still very slow out there now as we come up on the rush hour yeah and KJ I mean these closures will remind folks we're primarily we're hearing um on the majors to make way for the ambulances to bring these officers to the hospital that's exactly right Vanessa and Jane making way for the emergency vehicles to get to the hospitals and then we has some of those areas blocked off as well some of those neighborhood roads in and around Novant and Atrium in the south and east side of Charlotte but taking a look now at the maps you can see we still have some delays out there because this uh event is also going to coincide with our evening rush hour so we're now in that 5:00 hour 10 minutes after 5 and we're seeing a little bit more green here but notice still touch and go here and there across the area so I want to zoom in just a little bit here and you can see coming in from 74 74 is still a bit of a headache at this hour on any given day it's a headache so add this to um the situation here so you can see Central right there we have 74 the on ramps and coming and going on 277 it is going to be a slow go as you can see it here notice Touch and Go highlighted in red and orange uh 277 also seeing some delay so getting on and off 277 will be a bit of a slow go at this time and some of those rows near the hospitals are also a little touch and go so we are seeing some of those uh backup some congestion but other areas we're getting a little bit of relief we still have some of those roads roads closed off near the scene shanning House Drive U near gallway drive this is near the immediate scene of this shooting and this is um some of those areas and neighborhood streets that are still blocked off so if you need to get there or leave your home uh chances are you will not be able to leave by car at this time uh so you certainly want to stay tuned and updated on what's happening in and around this area of gallway Drive in East Charlotte thank you KJ so we just wanted to remind folks that as we await more information we are seeing various reports we've mentioned possible eyewitnesses reporting different numbers and such we're trying to be very responsible in our reporting here we only want to confirm to you what we have confirmed ourselves with law enforcement so we do see there are other uh reports floating around we want to make sure that we're getting the right information to you so as we know it at this hour four law enforcement officers shot a US Marshal in surgery fighting for his life and then three local officers wounded as well and still awaiting conditions on some of them exactly we have reporters all over uh this scene and area hospitals are looking at some live pictures right now from gallway Drive where they say the area has been cleared uh one suspect found deceased at the residence but they are still talking to two other people uh occupants of the home cnpd also telling us that they will hold a press conference around 5:40 so we are standing by for that this scene here remains active and it will remain closed uh as they try to um deal with the investigation which sometimes will take much longer than actually what unfolded prior to um you know everything coming to a conclusion here so as this scene uh is still unfolding in a very active investigation they just ask that people Spectators or people that are curious to stay away from the area that said we are hearing the shelter in place for the actual residents here Has Lifted so that is some promising news reflecting on the safety now of the situation apparently police feeling a little bit safer now that they've been able to confirm as we told you before the the suspect at the center of this the the purported person who shot at these Law Enforcement Officers according to police um it was discovered deceased inside the residence uh as you mentioned Jane they're still going to be questioning two other people who were inside the home our crews who are in the area have also reported crime scene investigators coming up and in approaching the scene with their units and so as we see here even here this live look showing the mobile command showing up we know that the scene is probably going to remain active with a lot of law enforcement for several hours to come as we wait for that we are coming up on 5:15 now and so all of this unfolding around 1:00 this afternoon and as we are uh waiting to hear more details you could see a lot of uh it looks like SWAT team and u local law enforcement now going back to their car and it seems like a lot of people are now uh retreating back from that residence yes a recap here this all started to unfold we're told around the 1:00 hour Jane you mentioned that US Marshals trying to serve a warrant at a home in this neighborhood so we're told the 5500 block of gallway drive this is in East Charlotte not too far from the plaza and so there you see a timeline of what we've been able to piece together so far event hearing that multiple victims were transported as we mentioned we've been able to hear via NBC news that two law enforcement confirmed to NBC news that the four victims uh in included once again a US Marshal and three local officers who were shot they were all part of this task force we've got a lockdown there you see around 3:00 involving four schools we know that dismissal was delayed a little bit and then eventually the lockdown lifted and then right now just at the top of the hour close to the hour cmpd confirming that they've cleared the residence Vanessa you talked about the US Marshall there uh the task force there to serve a warrant with the uh task force and uh we want to bring in now Quenton Williams FBI expert joining us live who could weigh in on and and talk to us about how the process uh went down why that task force was there and the thing that unfolded uh afterwards I'm just actually getting up to date on it I was bringing my kids back from school and prior to going to do that I saw a bunch of Cruisers uh responding to this to this incident from South Charlotte could weigh in on and and talk to us about how the process we apologize I think we're getting some feedback task force was there and the things that unfolded uh afterwards we'll go back to Quenton when we figure out his technical difficulties uh he said that he's getting just caught up anyway on what's Happening and what's transpired this is a a story unfortunately that is made national headlines as we've seen seen it come across the Associated Press wires and saying several officers shot trying to serve a warrant on uh on a suspect earlier this afternoon it sounds like we can get back to Quenton once again so uh hopefully we've resolved the audio issues there we apologize for folks watching at home uh for the feedback that they heard the audio feedback but Quinton if you can hear us are you able to weigh in once again give us some insights on on what these US Marshals might be doing you know general generalities of their their job what they might have been doing at this home yes they looking for somebody and trying to uh trying to gain gain custody of somebody so when they roll up to a place uh sometimes many times people don't want to go with them and unfortunately it's a very dangerous serving this kind of Warrant or trying to apprehend somebody is very dangerous and U and so they go with with a few people and they they do it very strategically but you're at a disadvantage when somebody's behind closed doors and they're protected by shelter and you're not and that's probably what happened here a lot of times they they do use the element of surprise and that is the with the element of Darkness uh they didn't do that today I don't know exactly why but uh this gave this gave an opportunity for that person under shelter to to take advantage of that in this very dangerous way makes sense uh Quinton and then following the when the suspect opened fire and uh why everything was on lockdown explain the prec the procedure by you know now this is a public safety uh concern with streets being closed and gunfire in the neighborhood uh how who decides what who's going to do what when it's it well they law enforcement has trained over and over uh to be able to handle some of these situations with Instinct rather than having to think about it so that's what happened as soon as this happened they went into lock down they locked down the roads to make sure that they didn't uh that nobody else was a part of this That Got Away uh they wanted to protect the public they would lock down the the surrounding areas to make sure that people sheltered in place especially with schools kids are sometimes at recess I remember when I saw the Cruisers uh hustling to the scene it was at around 1:00 1:30 I was coming back from lunch so there are kids who are at recess and you want to protect them so I'm sure the schools went into lockdown mode and they wanted to make sure that they got everybody and when um so that's the primary concern is for the the safety and health of the officers and the safety and health of those who are uh in the in the neighborhoods and that's uh unfortunately officers were hit so they had to tend to them while doing all this at the same time but these are professionals they they are prepared for this and cmpd I know does a great job in responding to these kinds of crises are you able to provide any ight into what might happen next we presume that there are probably four officers now at area hospitals will they go to them and get statements seems they're still questioning two people who were inside the residence that they were serving the warrant at what would you anticipate as far as an investigation that would follow a situation like this I don't know the I don't know the condition of those who were shot but of course taking care of them making sure that they're okay is the top priority but while that's happening they are they are investigating at the scene speaking to all those who were in the neighborhood going door too to find out exactly what happened they're going to review body cameras dash cameras they're going to piece together the story from the time the officers left their office until this happened and then the aftermath of it all will all be pieced together so that they'll have a timeline of exactly what happened and they'll they'll also research the strategy behind the uh the incident what were the officers doing there why were they there why were they there in that way uh what was the game plan for knocking on this door or approaching this this house and that will become part of the full story and that will help them in many ways of course it'll help them to figure out if there are any other subjects that they need to to uh who were not apprehended who were a part of this that they need to U Get gain custody of it'll also have help them understand how this happens so that we can learn from it because we do not want this to be repeated and so there will be a lot of lot of hours spent investigating this and papering it and we'll find out more information as as time goes on but I'm sure uh the I'm sure Chief is gonna is going to have a press conference to give us some information without compromising the investigation now on that note you mentioned of course not wanting to have something like this happen again Quenton one of our investigative journalists Nate Mo beat had pulled some numbers and basically found a report from the national Fraternal Order of Police showed that the number of police officers shot on the job hit a new high in 2023 so the data is kind of illustrating here a landscape a situation where it is seemingly becoming more concerning and dangerous to become an officer I guess what have your thoughts there does it feel like that as someone who has a background in law enforcement like it is a more dangerous landscape to be a law enforcement officer and how do we turn these numbers around it's a great question I we we're at a different time for law enforcement officers now than anytime in my life we are at a point where especially after coming through getting through covid and the dynamic between the public and law enforcement has shifted that shift has been occurring for some time but it it was accelerated through the covid period it is it it has been more dangerous to be a law enforcement officer because of the tensions between the two parties I think it can be overcome and I I don't I don't think this is just a blip I think it's something very serious but I do think it can be overcome I'm an eternal optimist but I'm a realist too and the relationship between law enforcement and the community has got to get better and there are there are methodologies for doing that it's something that I know the the cmpd is adopting these opportunities to engage with the public but even when you do that and you do it really well it doesn't mean this won't happen because there are some folks out there who are dangerous and uh do not have the same concern for human life that we the general public do and uh it's it's a shame that things like this happen with very committed people are trying to do their best to serve us all but I I do to answer your question I do think we are in a more dangerous time for law enforcement but I at the same time I think it's going to get better because there are there are great leaders and uh great agencies like cmpd that are adop ing methodologies for bringing communities together with law enforcement quenty Williams former FBI agent thank you for weighing in and uh letting giving us a little insight on onto the uh the thoughts of law enforcement and this uh scene here which has been just awful our Trisha Woodard has been on the scene now she is as close to that main scene on uh Gall drive and she joins us now with a live report Trisha what can you uh tell us at this hour well Jane I will tell you that a lot of officials have started trickling out here and there but a lot of residents Still Standing Outside they say they have not received the clearance to go home yet and let's just bring this to a better perspective this was around the time school was getting out so a lot of folks first priority is finding out how to get their kids here safely they say now they're just waiting to go home it has been a really really long day for a lot of folks take a look at this imagine coming home seeing a scene like this in your neighborhood far from what we saw just about an hour ago right many folks say they witnessed multiple police cars speeding past them medical officials also speeding past they say they knew something was going on but they had no idea it was happening so close to home folks in this neighborhood say gunshots are pretty common so after the first shots they didn't think anything of it but after the second and third round they say they started to get concerned in this way that's where I took the video at um it was the largest police presence as you can see I've ever seen in my entire life um I saw the ambulances take some people away I heard gunshots it was more gunshots than I could count and residents still have not heard much about when they'll go home neither have we of course as we continue to learn more information about this incident and when this road will will reopen we'll be sure to keep you updated reporting for WCNC Charlotte I'm Trisha Woodard Trisha thank you for that report you can see it's still so busy there although they've just isolated whatever's left of this investigation uh that's going to be there until further notice very active uh in that neighborhood of East Charlotte but cmpd posting not too long ago that they will be holding that press briefing at 5:40 so as we stand by for that press conference for all the details we are coming up on 5:30 so now almost 4 hours since since things unfolded there on um on that uh Street yes and we continue to get video from our crews which are stationed around various points in this neighborhood and just outside of this neighborhood we have Crews stationed outside of local hospitals where we believe these officers may have been taken and of course we have Crews at this briefing point which Jane mentioned here we could be hearing from cmpd with big updates on this case in about 10 minutes or so meantime many of you at home Neighbors in this area continue to send us video photos details we appreciate everything that you are sharing with us so we can pass it along to the general public looks like this video is coming to us from Kevin Martinez and it appears as though we do see quite a few officers out there uh in perhaps somebody's lawn we know that SWAT was out there for a period of time and we are even I think Jane you pointed this out seeing the SWAT tanks the heavy heavyduty equipment the there you see it this is a live look heavy Vehicles there on scene uh there's an aerial shot now from our special projects producer who's running the Drone overhead of the cmpd SWAT uh truck there and it is still uh so active you saw the you can see the yellow tape from above and just giving you a little bit of a bird's eyee view of this very busy street and um with neighbors probably just curious and wondering if they can still come out of their house uh but this has been the scene now for working on four hours and can only imagine how uh scary and concerning it was for that neighborhood certainly so we've heard from folks who were saying either they they heard multiple gunshots which of course we we just heard an interview with a neighborhood who said a neighbor who said that um so certainly concerning we're coming here towards the bottom of the hour now 5:30 we wanted to recap what we've learned so far about this rather lengthy active scene that has had really a ripple effect across the city this is a situation we're following out of East charlot gallway Drive where we are hearing a US Marshal and three law enforcement officers were shot as they were trying to serve a warrant with the US Marshals fugitive Task Force at a residence there on gallway drive and they had to shut that down in the last hour or not even an hour ago cmpd said that the residence on gallway Drive is now clear the area is safe although you see all all of the uh swattin and other law enforcement agencies and other First Responders still on scene but residents no longer need to shelter in place the one shoot at least one shooting suspect located deceased at the residence after clearing that scene but cnbd is still questioning two other occupants of the home and that they will be at the scene to conduct and wrap up this investigation but that the roadways are still uh shut down here as you could see and they're asking neighbors and people in the area just to be patient and cooperate with officers we are awaiting once again 10 minutes in 10 minutes hopefully from cmpd more details our call in Mayfield has been sent out to uh this would be the staging area is what the police are calling this but this is an area where the most upto-date information directly from police Colin is going to be coming to presumably you and our other crews out there yeah yeah and we are very very close I've seen more officials coming uh from gallway Drive behind me or only from what I can imagine would be gallway Drive uh which is where the helicopter has been circling pretty much the entire time we have been out here but fire officials I now see cmpd officials finally out here City of Charlotte um leaders are also out here so we should be getting more information within the next 10 minutes I did speak to someone else who came to this location after seeing the chaos the commotion he was moved to kind of speak to us um as a young man about 22 years old um we'll have his sound bite or his sound later on tonight at 11: hopefully but he was just telling me that it's shocking to see some of the youth violence we don't know obviously this suspect the age of this person of the gender at this point um but he was just commenting about the violence that continues to happen uh he frequents both New York the state of New York and Charlotte loves the area but he says the violence especially in in the east side of Charlotte University City uh it's been hard to take and he's spoken to people that he says they're just scared uh so I think a lot of folks looking for answers looking which way to turn and I think we understand there are some issues that city of Charlotte has to obviously answer and take a hard look into over the next couple of weeks especially as we get into some very very busy weeks with number of events that are outside uh in the coming months Vanessa and Jane we'll of course be locked here and wait for that information in the next 10 minutes or so all right thank you Colin we'll see you then want to go to some drone video right now a live picture of the scene from uh above from the aerial shot here as you can see officers are standing and uh still occupying gallway Drive yeah we've heard from cmpd that Neighbors in this area will likely continue to see a heavy police presence probably for the next several hours because while the safety element the concern for Public Safety is is apparently now gone and police can leave their or people can leave their homes police are still going to be out there conducting an investigation uh we mentioned the two people who were occupants of the home who are being questioned at this point you see right now a live Embrace there between officers no doubt a very emotional time for them um when you have one of your own who has been wounded in very chaotic sounding scene from from all accounts we're hearing from Neighbors with multiple shots fired we even had that screenshot of the Ring video which the doorbell camera video showing a person with a gun standing it looked like outside of a driveway we're still waiting to get the full video of that of course so uh by all accounts seemingly a a chaotic scene and in a really tough day for law enforcement across the area I mean definitely a tough long day here as we uh come up on 530 5 now just a few minutes away from that pressure that we are uh standing by for but you see that um simple Act of a hug between two officers they may or may not know the officers we don't know the story but when you hear that officers are shot whether they're from your agency or a US Marshals it's it it ripples through uh law enforcement that's right and that's why we see other uh First Responders going to memorials or say you know other uh special mil Stone occasions um good and bad for other agencies because it's a Brotherhood it's a Sisterhood frity and and you feel hopefully you feel a little bit of what um is unimaginable to hear that one of your own is hurt that's right and and we've seen agencies reaching out on social media including York County Sheriff our Lexi Wilson in fact has been Gathering some reaction that we're seeing from around the community so not just from law enforcement but also local officials elected officials and you know we're seeing this this outpouring from all levels of government not just local but we are seeing it going up to to the top so let's go ahead and get over to Lexi Lexi you're um Gathering some of this um this input from from our elected officials what are you seeing well we definitely have a lot of people weighing in as you mentioned local and state but let's take a look at some of the tweets that we're seeing now this is from the mayor vies this is what she says she's I'm deeply saddened by the shooting that occurred involving Charlotte Mecklenberg police officers US Marshals today I ask that all charlines keep them and other injured officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time and of course we have some other folks weighing in as well for example we have Governor Roy Cooper also putting out on social media some information he is saying I am in contact with law enforcement concerning the tragic shooting in the Charlotte area and we have offered State resources to help that's again coming from Governor Roy C excuse me Governor Roy Cooper now we have some other folks weighing Ino as well um let's take a look at this next social media tweet that we have here I'm pretty sure this next one's going to be from law enforcement of course this is a really tragic day for our Law Enforcement Officers now I do want to um show you that tweet a little bit later but I do want to send it back to you guys but again just a lot of condolences across the board from local and state officials here tonight yeah we do have to Circle back with you in just a bit to get the rest of that because we are seeing the police chief at this point yeah he is uh walking up now to the uh presser We Believe yes we we heard that he's he's heading towards the podium perhaps uh so we have those Crews that are stationed that are stationed around uh various areas including the briefing site and so uh there we see the podium being set up so he was there for a second but perhaps being told let's wait till 5:40 when we told everybody we'll certainly we have so many news outlets who are trying to get to this area probably and get this update um of course we are stationed out there we've got our audio equipment set up we've got our uh live presence there of course we because we plan to share this with you live once the police chief makes uh his statement here yeah we've been wanting to reach out or we we've been reaching out and wanting to know answers what happened who is the suspect who are the officers the extent of their injuries and cmpd wanting to wait on some of these uh finer details until that situation there on uh on the street gallway Drive uh stabilized and so now that that situation has cleared although it remains an active investigation they feel uh secure enough to have the presser let's go up to Austin Walker now who has been monitoring things outside of Novant uh medical Austin can you hear us what do you have yes I got you as you can hear behind me there's actually a lot of active police uh we are hearing that there was actually a procession of officers that were actually just all right here and they took off we were actually trying to get our camera up as you can get that uh video but as you can see the the ending of that trickle of officers down here uh again we are just out of Novant where we know that one of those individuals was taken into surgery and there's three others that were also shot we are un we do not know and is unclear where that person is having surgery at if it was here or at Atrium or any other Area Hospital again we've asked uh we've asked Novant if that is happening here and they deferred us back to cmpd for any and all information again we are at the corner of novon uh of the novon campas that is actually at the corner of um Hawthorne and fourth we do know that they did block off Hawthorne and fourth to Hawthorne and fifth past Elizabeth uh that was just about I'm not about 120 seconds to 2 minutes ago in that time frame again again we're just learning more right now uh and as uh things were happening in front of us again we did see um a slew of officers in Patrol Vehicles all in one line leaving this area down Hawthorne as traffic was being blocked so again we're not sure where they're heading at this point we know that Charlotte Fire is pulling back up to this direction uh we're seeing some police officers coming uh from from the North Area down this way again we're going to make sure update you at the latest though but as we do get it uh we'll bring it to you on air and online so stick with us but for now we are uh live from Novant Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte awesome very active scene there for the last couple of hours thank you for the very latest we should be moments away now from the cmpd update we're awaiting Chief Johnny Jennings to come to the podium where our crews have set up the the microphone equipment and we will of course carry his statement live when he gets there in the meantime we do wait here for the very latest we'll just remind folks that we've been getting a lot of information peac maill over the last 4 hours that this scene has been underway and we are only reporting what we've been able to confirm we know that there is probably some unofficial information that I've seen floating around on social media that is giving different numbers and about officers shot and such we are only reporting what we've gotten from law enforcement officials who've confirmed things either to us or to NBC News uh so this is at our count right now for four law enforcement officers who were following who were wounded in this as we look at that picture uh on your screen right right now we will go to that press conference as soon as we see someone uh speak but in the meantime uh happened around 1:45 is when we saw that cmpd issued that severe alert uh to pretty much stay and avoid the area of 5,500 block of gallway drive and then shortly after 2:00 hearing that multiple victims were transported we learned later on that it was a US Marshall as well as three local officers uh from the task force that this US Marshall Tas force was uh serving a warrant on that residence 312 CMS confirming that they had a modified lockdown of four CMS schools in the area including briwood those have since been uh lifted 340 CMS lockdown lifted and then cmpd clearing the residents just before 5:00 the heavy police presence does remain as we see here with some live Aerials of the neighborhood so many patrol cars out there this is actually recorded I'm told but this is still pretty representative we would say of the scene because we've seen other angles with multiple patrol cars uh as of a few moments ago with uh those law enforcement officials still out there on the gallway drive uh roadway uh looked still impassible by by our angle that we were seeing for folks who might even be wanting to go into the area so we will continue to follow of course the information that comes from the scene itself we know that they were questioning two people inside the home and um so there will be that investigation but also of course very concerned over the conditions of these four uh law enforcement officers who were injured our latest update our most recent update was via NBC news that was at 4:00 when we heard the US Marshall was going into surgery had to go into surgery and was fighting for their life that was that those that was a quote that we received regarding that person's condition we did not receive a condition on the three other officers who were shot we are standing by for a live press conf conference looking at the uh media staging center right now this is off the plaza cmpd telling us that they will hold a press briefing at 5:40 obviously it's 5:43 so it should be happening any minute now as we see somebody else walk up to the podium uh potentially setting up all the audio and uh other notes that need to be uh taken care of to give us the very latest details we still have a lot of questions we know you at home have questions about what happened uh and who these people who was involved uh both suspect and on the law enforcement side that's right and so uh as we await that information we do want to go ahead and check in with some of our crews it sounds like we have our Julia Kaufman who has been giving us updates throughout the afternoon from Atrium Health any changes to the scene that you're seeing out there since we last checked in Julia no changes Vanessa Jane uh pretty clear out here which is good news if you are commuting home from work uh during rush hour here soon it's it's clear here on South Kings Drive outside of Atrium Health about a couple hours ago when we were trying to get to the area it was extremely difficult traffic was backed up around the Dilworth area around the hospital intersections were shut down by police as they tried to keep the area clear for potential ambulances and and law enforcement patrol cars to come in while driving through um we did see some uh Patrol S at the emergency room area but it's unclear if any patients uh were transported here from the scene we spoke with Atrium Health's media contacts and they couldn't share any information but as you can imagine when there are uh large scenes like this a huge police presence or you know multiple Law Enforcement Officers injured you can imagine hospitals often uh bring in extra Staffing to help respond to that and try to you know help treat anyone if needed so we're working with limited details here uh but we're waiting for those more details from cmpd of course everyone just being careful that we're uh reporting correct and accurate information uh medic was also referring to cmpd so we'll wait to hopefully hear from them soon guys so important that we are responsible uh journalists first so thank you for that update and it's good to hear that traffic has gotten back to somewhat normal there in front of atrium Health that's right 5:45 right now we do want to recap what we've learned over the last four hours so we are hearing from cmpd that this was a situation in East Charlotte gallway Drive where US Marshals the task force it sounded like it was a fugitive task force was trying to okay we are just getting a really sad sad update um NBC News has confirmed that the US Marshall has passed away so um we were told that that person was in surgery yeah earlier today whether it was no VOR Atrium but they they were uh fighting for their life of course um very upsetting news here certainly not an update we wanted to have to share with you so uh this is how we see the situation at at this hour so um four law enforcement officers were shot at by the suspect wounded and um unfortunately we have just now learned the US Marshall did not survive the surgery we're told he was in surgery fighting for his life we are unaware of the condition of the three other officers we do know via two law enforcement officials who confirmed the initial injury reports to NBC news that these three officers were local local a they were with local agencies so they were assisting with this task force so okay we're being directed to information again this happened in the 1:00 hour around 1:30 where the US Marshall task force was serving a warrant on that house on a residence uh on gallway drive when they were fired upon here's the statement from US Marshals we're getting at this hour US Marshal Service confirms that one us one Deputy US Marshal has been shot and killed during a fugitive warrant operation in Charlotte several other Marshall service task force members and local officers were also shot and wounded they cannot confirm the number of officers wounded or their condition so once again this is a statement from US Marshals they're referring us to Charlotte mecklinburg Police which of course we're still waiting to hear from the matter is active and ongoing they are not sharing the name of the Deputy because they need to notify the next of kin his family H It's News you you hope that's not going to happen the word you know and the condition of the person and uh the US Marshall who we knew went to surgery and uh was fighting for their life but when you uh actually hear that it is confirmed that he did not make it uh it's it's beyond tragic it's just so sad to hear uh we are waiting for cmpd to give us the details on their press conference they say is going to be happening at any moment hopefully in the next five minutes yes it's it's imminent we're hearing um so we are standing by with our crews around the area I mean me you mentioned this Jane this is the update that nobody wanted to hear we heard from so many elected officials people in the community neighbors saying that they were praying for these law enforcement officers that they would have the most positive outcome so I know this is not just shattering for the law enforcement Community but also for the Charlotte Community overall absolutely um trying to serve a warrant and just trying to do their job in the name of of justice and on the right side of the law um and and yeah and we had to confirmed that that person had passed away the deceased gunman at least one suspect also found deceased earlier this afternoon that was confirmed by cmpd and they know uh that they are or we know that they are still having to talk to two occupants of the home uh wrapping up this investigation and that they will be there on scene um into the foreseeable future the rest of the day I would imagine that's right I mean we had heard from Quenton Williams who we frequently speak with to weigh in on law enforcement matters he's a former FBI agent so he has a lot of knowledge about just how the situation might unfold he talked about how they might do this investigation of course being most concerned overall with the medical condition and and you know the the conditions and the safety of the law enforcement officers who who were injured in this um we're actually actually seeing right now uh looks like the leaders y i see the mayor out there um it's hard to make out some of this shot here I believe I see the district attorney for mcklin BG County Spencer Merryweather on scene so okay and mayor viles and we're seeing FBI as well as it looks like it's a a multi- agency Gathering here uh showing of unity mayor's looks like she is visibly upset and emotional that's right so we'll wait to see if this press conference is starting we were told 5:40 so the update should be imminent let's listen in here hi good afternoon everyone my name is Kevin petus I'm a lieutenant with the Charlotte meberg Police Department here in Charlotte North Carolina I appreciate your patience this afternoon as we U have worked through uh the situation that we've been dealing with today uh there's no doubt that Charlotte our Charlotte Community has experienced a tragedy today and it's one that as a law enforcement Community we always know is possible but we never expect it never gets easier we're going to do our best to answer your questions today to provide details to be transparent about the events of this afternoon but I do implore you to understand uh that we're dealing with tragic loss of life today and uh that loss of life is very fresh there's details that we do not know there's questions that we frankly just aren't going to be able to answer um we will take your questions uh but first the chief of police for the Charlotte meberg Police Department Johnny Jennings is going to come and give you some information share his thoughts I'll spell that for you Johnny is j o h NN y last name is Jennings j n and NS after chief Jennings uh the mayor of the city of Charlotte VI lyes is going to come and share her thoughts vi v lyes l y l s chief thank you lieutenant today is an absolute tragic day for the city of Charlotte and for the profession of law enforcement today we lost some Heroes that are out to just simply trying to keep our community safe I'm going to try to go through a series of events of how this all occurred and played out and then tell you a little bit more about uh about the injuries and the things that we had to endure today as a as a profession and as a city so about 1:30 p.m. this afternoon the US Marshals fugitive task force went to the 5,000 block of gallway Avenue and attempt to serve a warrant on an individual for possession of firearm by a convicted felon when they approached that individual they were met with gunfire officers returned gunfire and struck a victim who was later pronounced deceased in in the front yard of the residence as officers approached that individual they they then received additional gunfire from inside of the residence so after a long standoff we were able to clear this residence and confirm that there were two additional people inside they were both brought to the police station as Persons of Interest and were trying to determine now now what exactly occurred inside of the residents tragically there were three members of the US Marshals task force who were pronounced deceased and there were there were four cmpd officers who were shot one being in critical condition who is now in the hospital fighting for his life a total of eight law enforcement officers were shot by this by the suspects in this house so we are very early in investigation cmpd will lead this investigation uh we still have a lot to uncover a lot of questions that are not answered right now so please respect the fact that I won't be able to answer some of the questions that you're going to have uh but at the same time uh we are going to diligently work on this to ensure that that we bring a respect to these officers and these law law enforcement officials that lost their lives today and this is a good example of what we try to tell people every single day that when we put on this uniform that we don't have any guarantees that we'll return home but yet we have a lot of great men and women across this entire country that do it every single day to make sure that you're safe in your communities so with that I'm going to turn it over to Mayor V if she want to say a few words I'm just going to put this mic down you never know what your day is going to be like you can't plan things like this to be in this space at this time we've lost three people they lost their lives after they gave us the opportunity to be in a safe place and they lost their lives these are people that care deeply about what they've done for a profession and now today we have to say to them how much we are grateful for what they have done we won't know very much about what happened until their investigation is done but I know this about our community our community stands up for people they stand up for all of the people that work for us that make it possible all of our officers if you had a little bit of problem driving around today I don't think anybody was too worried about that because we know that there is a reason for this and there's a reason that everything happens and sometimes we don't understand it but at this point I know that this community will seek understanding I know that our police department will seek understanding I want to say this um we're very very much grateful today I heard from the White House about the loss of our officers and the situation that we were having to adjust to I've heard from congresswoman Adams as well as congresswoman Congressman Jeff Jackson on the way over here the Speaker of the House Tim Moore and the president of our state senate they all talked about what can they do to help us now we may not know what help we need right now today but we do know that when people reach out to say this is something that is important that has happened and they want to be a part of whatever we do because there will be a time that we will commemorate these people that lost their lives you think about it your father your husband your friend your neighbor all of them them were some one person like that and today they're not going home you know three people lost their lives today and the most that I can ask of our community is that we honor and respect them for all the work that they've done all the work that we will do to make it possible for our city to be safer every one of us wants to be in a situation where they got you get up this morning and get to come back home and someone didn't today keep your prayers keep your faith make sure that these officers who have families have people to reach out and held them up because they will need this and we are a city that will make it possible for them to be this way to be be able to live and know that we honor and respect the loss that they have thank you very much for this time thank you mayor I want to take just a moment just to clarify um there was a total of four scpd officers that was struck by gunfire today and four Task Force officers that's a total of eight law enforcement officers who were who were struck by gunfire today um I want to take a minute to recognize the the people standing behind us here today the first responder Community the government organizations that that stand behind me this is a community within the community and it's incredible the bond that we have and it's demonstrated in no other way like it is in moments of Crisis and a moments of tragedy like the one that occurred today so to recognize the people that are with me today we have the Charlotte Fire Department medic home uh Department of Homeland Security Federal Bureau of Investigation Department of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms US Marshals meber attorney's office North Carolina Highway Patrol and I sure hope I didn't leave anybody off the list on their behalf I want to thank you for being here and um on behalf of all the men and women that they represent who answer the call especially when tragedy strikes I want to I want to thank them um any questions that you have chief chief Jennings and mayor Liars are available how does way they respond if at all well it certainly changes the response the question is how does it change the response when you're going into a residence where someone has a history of having a weapon uh and let me just be clear the US Marshall Serv Service uh their fugitive task force is comprised of surrounding agencies so there are multiple agencies that are involved uh with the fugitive task force with the Marshall Service uh the Charlotte mackenberg Police Department is a member of the US Marshals uh task force as well um so anytime you are dealing with someone who is a convicted felon and who has been caught previously with the firearm it does raise concerns and raise awareness when you are responding so um when they do that the part of the reason the task force is such an imperative part of what we do every single day is because they have extensive training and they train together to be able to deal with these kind of situations it's always going to be uh something that's on the Forefront of their uh thought process when you're going after Charlotte's most dangerous people uh and unfortunately today was something tragic that we never want to see I never want to stand in front of you today uh to talk about an incident such something this tragic it's it's really heartbreaking yes you know I I'm not ready to tell you all of the agencies what I can confirm is that four cmpd officers were shot uh one cmpd officer is in very critical condition at this point uh we do have to make sure that uh family members and all of them are notified so I'm not going going to release which agencies they were with with the task force so the question is the number of Shooters we are right now we believe there are two Shooters involved uh again we have two people of interest at the police station that are being questioned right now uh and we have confirmed that the individual that was uh set up that we were serving the warrant on uh was the individual who fired the initial shots and was deceased in the front yard uh at the end of all of this so besides they the other officers besides the officer that's in critical condition the other officers are stable uh the degree of injuries are varying anywhere from a graze wound uh to a to a wound that uh requires a little bit more attention but they are stable and expected to be okay and can you say any of your officers who who are shot in this were they responding Patrol officers were they squat officers yes I can confirm that uh we do have a we do have an a sergeant who is assigned to the task force who was on the scene uh that officer immediately called for help the three officers or the four officers that were shot are officers who were responding to the scene I'll get to you yes yes sir yes scene um can you just tell us what Firearms these suspects had and when you were able to get into that house any other firearms that that's still early to tell uh right now we're still doing the investigation in the house I can tell you it was a high powerered rifle that was involved on the suspect in yes sir first of all my thoughts [Music] you thank you for that question so The Bravery of our office ERS that responded to the scene knowing that they're going into gunfire is is what I've been saying for many years is in the face of danger our people step up and this profession steps up and that's what we should be defined as doing because we they knew what they were going into and still held their own and attempt to apprehend this suspect they knew that they had officers that needed help that needed to be extracted from that location yet they went in some getting shot themselves as a result so uh The Bravery the heroism uh everything that goes down with that defines what our profession is our people demonstrated that today and I couldn't be more proud of the response I couldn't be more proud of the Partnerships that we have at every single level of law enforcement every single level of Public Safety I can't say enough about about the phone calls the text messages uh the support and as you heard Lieutenant petus say or the mayor say that a lot of it is what do you need how can we help and it just uh in times like this that's exactly what we need in in these situations Chief in terms of other surrounding areas law enforcement agencies can you talk about how many maybe from other counties helped out or federal law enforcement agencies helped out yeah so the the question is how many other agencies are with the fugitive task force or just responded um so The Fugitive task force I don't have the exact numbers uh with Charlotte has one member uh on the fug fugitive task force as a sergeant but mainly the surrounding agencies within our uh within our surrounding uh cities and towns uh are members of that and we can get you those numbers exactly what who who is involved actually helped out responding to this whether it was g county providing their or whatever yeah so uh so the officers who responded to help out um all the federal agencies were on the scene with me and uh state agencies at meinberg County Sheriff's Office was there as well um we had agencies uh from Pineville uh to different different towns within our our County uh they sent officers in to answer our calls for service because we were we OB obviously you can imagine the Manpower needs that it was to secure that scene and to do the transports so they were very helpful to ensure that we did not let our citizens down in responding to those calls for service and they were very helpful in that so in the house at the time of this no children in the house there was one juvenile that we did get out of the house though yes thep used a high power provide any information what ammunition was used by the not right now the type of ammunition that's still part of the investigation uh all of that will have to be uh be looked at as as far as we when we get into the house also recover any uh projectiles that might have been as taken out as treatment to the officers so there's a there's a lot that we still have to uncover we're not so the question is whether this was an appropriate time to serve a warrant uh I will I will tell you hold on I will say when you're talking about a felon who has propensity to carry a firearm there is no great time to do it uh whether it's in the middle of the night or in the middle of the day uh the interest in The Fugitive task force was to ensure that this person was brought to Justice and taken off the streets uh and unfortunately uh he decided that he was going to respond to that by gunfire at our officers yes ma'am you have any prior histories or calls regarding this place of residence I I do not right now but uh the history of this residence the history of the individual all of that will be released very soon we're going to try to get that information out we do have a lot of family notifications that we have to make in order to provide more information to each and every one of you about this individual so yeah so the question is is right now is the shelter in place open is the area okay to to uh go back to normal duties yes we're going to be at the residence processing the crime scene uh probably for several hours uh but as far as the lockdowns and and closure of roads and all of that we have opened that back up the house has been secured by our officers have been cleared uh and now now comes the tedious task of ensuring that we collect the evidence and process the scene yes I just wanted to confirm with you you said one suspect was shot in that front yard you mentioned there were two more people inside that house that are now in custody are one those two people the additional shooter or was there second victim one of those suspects yeah so the question is about the two uh other individuals who were who came out of the house later uh uh we can't I can't confirm right now whether which one or if either are the suspects in the additional shots that were fired uh what I can tell you is that we had the house secured um and it was the perimeter was Secure and we continued to take gunfire from inside the residence and after we cleared the residence there were only two individuals that came out uh one uh 17-year-old Juvenile and then a uh another female who was taken out as well well so so just to confirm there is only one suspect that is deceased one suspect is deceased yes Chief uh do you know do you know if this is the deadliest law enforcement day in mber county or Charlotte history I cannot I've been I've been with the Charlotte mackenberg Police Department for 32 years uh I can't remember an incident where three law enforcement officers uh were and and and also three that were killed in the same incident as well as one in critical condition and and additional that were shot uh and injured so um uh to me it's it's the most tragic one that I've been involved in I I don't know historically I I can't imagine that there's one that's that's any worse than what we're seeing today Chief what are the questions that your investigators will be work to answer in the coming dayss months well a lot of the questions that need to be answered we don't even know what those questions are right now we have to get a full understanding of why this occurred uh and also to uphold the Integrity of the investigation we want to make sure that we check all the boxes that we need to so that we can get a f a full prosecution in this case if and when it comes down to that uh we know some answers but we still have many that we have to uh clear up and and many that we have to continue uh to work on until we can really lock down what happen who was involved uh and and move on from there so social media to your department have you had that conversation with them so what was talk about I did I I spoke with the governor uh earlier today he basically asked me what do I need he's here to support uh certainly appreciative of of the phone call with him uh and um you know unfortunately I know he would be here if he could right now he's on his way to come and speak with us but um I did speak with him this afternoon Chief while our prayers are for the families and the community um I am a East Charlotte resident since 1975 I appreciate what the police officers do in our community speaking on behalf of the East Charlotte Community I'm prayerful that there will be an increase of the police presence in our area in E Charlotte yeah thank you for that um at this point I'm I'm concerned mainly with taking care of the officers taking care of their families uh and all of that comes into play later on how do we respond to this community but want to make sure the community knows that we're going to continue to keep them safe uh we got a lot of brave men and women out there that are going to continue working in that uh neighborhood and they're going to continue to um uh work in the best interest of our community and our citizens so yes I'll take three more questions yeah C offic andj how many of those officers were of that and how many were responding to shot okay all of the officers from cmpd that were injured were responding to the scene the one office the one sergeant that we have assigned to the task force was not injured yes I I don't know how many total officers were there serving the warrant so I don't have that that's that's from the US Marshals uh task force that they they had their a contingency of their uh task force out there doing this warrant service yes Devon speak my condolences for you and the police force I definitely feel like this is a bad tragic situation that should never take place um in regards to law enforcement and just citizens throughout this throughout the state um what can you say could be a beneficial step that could be taken between relations between police enforcement and whether it could be just citizens felons or whatever the case may be what could be done to bridge the gap so a level of this situation would never take place well I I I'll be honest with with you whatever Gap there is this level should never get to this place right I mean you can have all the hate in your heart that you possibly can have that should never result in taking a life and much less taking multiple lives so the Charlotte mackenberg Police Department and every agency you see behind me has a priority to in to continue to make sure that we have the the best community relation ships that we possibly can but a lot of that also means that we have to be met halfway on certain things so um we're going to continue to do that and like I said we're going to continue to keep your community safe so thank you that's all I'll ask answer for now so thank you all right thank you all for being here um we we do need your support and we do need your prayers both for our officers and the other officers involved and for for their families and and for those impacted in our community and other different ways so uh stay tuned to cmpd public affairs our social media channels and and press releases that we're going to be putting out will keep you up to date on all the information that we have as we get it thank you I'm Jane monell with Vanessa Rufus we've been following breaking news for the last three and a half hours on a officer police officer involved shooting you just heard a live press conference from cmpd Chief Johnny Jennings that's right and we wanted to first and foremost address the loss of life which was just confirmed To Us by Chief Johnny Jennings we are hearing that three law enforcement officers have died while the US Marshals task force was trying to uh execute a warrant at a home on gallway drive we are able to confirm at least one of the law enforcement officers who died was a US Marshall and that's because we received a separate statement from the US Marshall's office confirming essentially one of their own had been shot and killed uh we are unable to confirm what other agencies the two other deceased Law Enforcement Officers might be with we know that multiple agencies make up this task force and four other officers uh with cmpd also shot they are said to be one in critical condition and having to go through surgery right now fighting for their life and then three others in stable condition the chief saying that they should be okay and make a full recovery but this all again started around 1:30 this afternoon in a neighborhood in East Charlotte the 5,000 block of gallway drive when they were serving a warrant on a suspect for possession of firearm by a convicted felon and so officers tell us apparently that as they were trying to serve this warrant they say that they were met with gunfire and they believe that even after shooting the person who was firing upon them there was another person because they say that they continued to take gunfight from somebody inside the residence and so we do know at this hour that two people who were inside the home after law enforcement was able to clear the home and basically confirm that one of the suspects was dead they say that they took two people into custody for questioning and we actually heard the chief refer to them as a 17-year-old Juvenile and a female uh he said that the Charlotte Community experiencing a tragedy today which uh yes we are all seeing this tragedy right before our eyes and know that when officers go to work that they hope to come home but it is uh it is possible that they don't come home but a day like today not expected Charlotte mayor VES also weighing in and she got quite emotional that's right a lot of emotion from her and and you know we can understand for sure right our Colin Mayfield was out there listening to The Briefing in person and so yeah you saw you saw the reactions from these election officials and and law enforcement officials as they had to break this very tough news to the community yeah ladies tragic of course eight Law Enforcement Officers you heard Chief Johnny Jennings talk about in his career he don't he doesn't think that he's had eight officers fired upon um in in a day like this so it's unfathomable for these men and women to go to work and have to deal with something uh like this we know the stats obviously I won't go through that but yes TR tragic we heard a tragic day uh said by not only the mayor but Chief Johnny Jennings talking about uh these officers that put their lives on the line every single day for the people here in Charlotte and the community uh that they serve and that they're going to continue to do that but here's what the mayor had to say that emotional recount of everything that that happened uh today listen in you know three people lost their lives today and the most that I can ask of our community is that we honor and respect them for all the work that they've done all the work that we will do to make it possible for our city to be safer every one of us wants to be in a situation where they got you get up this morning and get to come back home and someone didn't today so you heard the mayor obviously just noticeably shaken it wasn't just her we had obviously the ATF HSI the FBI federal agencies out here uh also doing this work with our cmpd and the units that have been on the ground so yes it's been an emotional day not just for those involved but I think for the entire Charlotte Community and they understand law enforcement understands that they have more work to do we heard a number of residents asking questions about will they still be in this neighborhood and chief Johnny Jennings saying a resounding that they will not be leaving they will be protecting the citizens of this community Jane Vanessa Colin thank you we heard also the mayor sort of put it in perspective you know you might have had trouble driving around but you're able to go home yeah that's right we did see a lot of lane closures major roadways impacted even the Interstate 77 we know that they had to shut down roadways in order to get these off officers from the scene where they were wounded to area hospitals our kayin hagwood has actually been posted up just outside of the scene so just outside of the immediate impact of the neighborhood and kayn you mentioned seeing so many emergency vehicles out there and you said you're you're five minutes from where this actual shooting happened that's right Vanessa I'm in the Shannon Park neighborhood just minutes away from gway drive and why I'm minutes away is because at the time when this was happening just hours ago it seemed like multiple scenes um were taking shape I mean there were parts of I77 that were blocked off because of just the mass response from law enforcement and First Responders we saw the SWAT team we saw state troopers we saw um the Sheriff's Office was here and of course uh many many many cmpd officers uh we it it took us so much work to even be able to get to this location earlier on in the day because there was so many areas uh that were just uh blocked off as law enforcement try to to do their work and I will tell you we had uh families because at this time schools were letting out so you had uh really hundreds of students just sort of pouring in uh leaving the schools uh you know and and in confusion as all of this was taking place and the roads were um sort of locked and in certain areas of town and so parents would come up to our news vehicle and ask hey what's going on I just want to make sure that my family's okay and at the time all we could tell them was you know there's an anactive situation and we're waiting for more information from law enforcement obviously a lot of Det coming out of that press conference and um you know can't say that it doesn't give us a lot of uh Comfort to to hear what we've now learned I mean three officers in the US Marshalls task force were killed four cmpd officers in the hospital one fighting for their life tonight and neighbors say they heard just shot after shot after shot particularly in this neighborhood as uh those law enforcement officers were responding to this scene now that we're getting more details I want you to hear from one of those neighbors who lives here in this neighborhood about what they experienced she heard from our uh neighbor who lives on the street that um there's a number of gunshots that went off and uh she was then saw over 75 cop cars go down our road uh the SWAT car um then there was like a station that um like a command center that blocked it up at the top of Shannon house um and then the helicopter started coming yeah um obviously a a very sad situation taking place in this neighborhood um neighbors saying that you know it's a lot of older folks who actually live in this area several neighborhoods um just in this general area around where this all has taken place certainly scary to see something like this happen at any time of the day but this happening in broad daylight uh in this neighborhood affecting so many families and now as law enforcement are responding in that hospital so many families needing to be notified us not even knowing the names yet of these officers who were impacted uh by this event certainly there's going to be a lot more details that come out soon uh as there are just still a few Cruisers left in this neighborhood um the investigation continuing with the two suspects they say uh at cmpd headquarters at this time uh being interviewed about what took place again one uh is deceased two other suspects uh it at cmpd headquarters right now and they are being questioned that's right yeah they called them Persons of Interest I believe during that that cmpd briefing just moments ago Kaylin thank you so much for painting that picture for us it's got to be a surreal situation for Neighbors in the area knowing that you know gunshots were fired across the street or down the street and you could hear it and and you can't even count it there were so many and it's so loud AR Trisha would as close to the scene there in gallway drive as possible although uh they say that the scene is clear there there is there is still a heavy presence left tradish absolutely Jane there are still officials still here on the scene lots of folks say this has just been a very very long day and to hear that people have lost their lives right in this community right near home they say they're absolutely heartbroken a lot of folks basically recalling the moment when police were swerving over to get here Medics swerving over to get here to this neighborhood unaware that this was happening in their neighborhood so close to home I heard Kaylin mention a lot about worries about how they're going to get their kids off the bus you couldn't get in you couldn't get out so a lot of folks trying to figure out what's next they finally get their kids and then hours and hours pass before they can actually get into their homes but the scene has cleared quite a bit take a look not much left here still a couple of police cars a lot of folks say they witness multiple police cars speeding past them they say this street here was packed with lots of cars of course we have footage of that as well police medic officials trying to die down this situation in this neighborhood now a lot of folks tell me gunshots here in this neighborhood are pretty common they say the first round they thought okay this is normal right and then the second round the third round that's when they got concerned looking out of their window seeing SWAT cars pull through here they say it was a very scary scene and neighbors say this once again their hearts are with the folks who lost their lives here in the community today they they're absolutely heartbroken heavy heavy hearts in this community right now folks finally got a chance to go home just about 30 minutes ago just just a heartbreaking scene Jame Vanessa thanks Trisha for that report again uh just the antidotes and what people are experiencing in their own neighborhood uh has got to be so trying and tiring it's got to be there all day yeah we uh do have other Crews stationed around the area we wanted to get out to our Austin Walker and I do remember at one point Austin even pointed out the fact he saw what he thought looked like a procession at least that was the word he used to describe it when you were outside Novant you're still outside Novant Austin what did you see yeah hey guys at one point again there were at least about 30 cop cars in law enforcement Vehicles all in one line exting this area that is cmpd cars and uh the sheriff's department everything from state troopers and medic uh that being said it was a very intense we've all been saying this across the stot area that it has just been a very intense day with presents from all different kinds of law enforcement I want to show you this video actually on your screen which you could see part of that speed uh into the hospital from state troopers uh again very intense you saw lights and siren speed that was going up uh that's going up Fourth Street in this area which again that's about 30 mph this road so they were uh obviously speeding to get to the hospital that's what we saw for a lot of today but then obviously like many areas it died off and you didn't see as much traction but then here and there you'd see more Vehicles come in and out the big question we've had today is as because a lot of these officers did sustain gunshots uh they did have to uh get treated somewhere within the Charlotte Community so we asked Novant if they had anybody from the scene transported to this area when asking noon and they told us to direct that to cmpd they did just send us an email though telling us that they are committed to helping their Community any way they can but they did not answer if anybody from that scene was transported to Novant but again we did see a very big presence from all different types of law enforcement at novon Health um again we are learning more uh throughout the day trying to put these pieces together and obviously our hearts go out to those officers who lost their life uh again we'll make sure to update you on air and online with the latest but for now we are live from novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte certainly thinking of their families absolutely um and when you have someone in the hospital sometimes what we don't know yet but you hear the procession uh along lines of uh active sirens and and uh flashing lights you know that something is Right dangerous um and potentially very tragic and we've been seeing images just kind of reflecting the the emotions of the community and and how folks are feeling for example we just saw a few moments ago um coming into our Newsroom some video showing flags at half staff already and uh you can see there it looks like a memorial growing now this is um outside we believe the federal courthouse the US Marshal's office and Vanessa you saw the you mentioned the flag half staff um just in honor of the task force members that were killed in the line of duty one other shot and again four other cmpd officers uh also uh hurt in this incident where just doing their job and we we spoke with a former FBI agent Quenton Williams earlier this afternoon to just kind of reflect on what has really become a dangerous landscape for law enforcement and our Nate morbido is joining us right now and Nate you've been looking into some numbers just really reflecting how often this is happening now yeah I mean that's such a sad thought when you think about all the advances in technology we have and yet last year according to the Fraternal Order of Police on average more than once a day there was a shooting where a police officer was shot wow now in about 46 of those cases a police officer died but last year 378 shootings that's up by almost 50 shootings since the prior year wow and many of those are Ambush style attacks and if you heard the chief short time ago that's kind of what he indicated happened in this case initially they went there and a short time later somebody started firing at them from inside the house uh I want to point out this too uh the last time that we can find at least where cmpd was involved with a situation you know kind of of this magnitude two cnbd officers died in 2007 a mile and a half away wow from the scene what just Southeast I mean it's so close and again it's a reminder how often this happens it happens so often but also 2018 is the last time a marshall died in the line of service from gunfire so it's happening more often as far as the shooting the Fraternal Order of Police will say that the advances and Technology have helped reduce the number of deaths but as we've seen today three people have died despite that and one's fighting for their life and I talked to the US Marshall's office a little while ago and and the spokesperson told me this is just the day you don't want to come to work because you know they know the numbers you know they're living this every day and serving warrants are very difficult you know we hear a lot of times responding to domestic situations are difficult uh in that that cnbd case in 2007 two officers that were killed were serving uh were responding to a domestic situation today Marshals the task force serving a warrant and just a terrible situation all around yeah I mean well the question came up to the chief um it was in the middle of the afternoon serving uh a warrant on a on a fellow for possession of a firearm um was that the best time and he simply said there is no good time right to serve a warrant uh of this you know to this kind of suspect and there have been changes right to to the serving of Warrant to avoid the nighttime aspect uh a lot of times you'll hear maybe in the morning you can catch people off guard a bit more but uh you know convicted fellon possession of a gun was the underlying charge here that they were serving and so that alone suggests that this had the potential to be a violent situation and just oh my gosh yeah you know as the afternoon goes on you just realize how bad it's gotten right and I talked to several people I spent the last few hours just calling people who live near uh this area and they tell me we mostly keep ourselves we stay in our own lane one woman told me I Stay in My Own Lane exactly for this reason just because you never know what the day is going to bring and uh I think we just heard a few minutes ago gunshots are not uncommon there that's hard to hear it you know and and the fact too that we heard from the police chief a few moments ago when he talked about the two other people who are in custody now who are being questioned he called them Persons of Interest a 17-year-old and then he he didn't give an age but there was a female as well and we don't know the age of this suspect but the fact that there was a young person yet another young person who's at least being looked at with concern over this case that's that's hard to hear hasn't that been the narrative corre lately in Charlotte I mean unfortunately we uh say we have another violent weekend we have more juvenile involved in some kind of gun violence um yes unfortunately it's it's happening more often than not well and I will say when we we spoke with Quenton Williams um once again former FBI about this and he acknowledged he said yes you can feel it the landscape feels more dangerous but he did express some optimism so I guess we could hold on to that the fact that it could get better and hopefully it will get better but that's some tough data to listen to it is tough and more than once a day there was a shooting last year of a police officer just let that sink in and I know for some families tonight that has sunk in yeah H thank you for that it's eye opening there and uh to learn about this officer involved shooting uh three killed now in the line of duty let's go ahead and get to this briefing from Chief Jennings once again this happened a few moments ago but we wanted to just kind of recap what we've learned because a lot of information detailed and uh so we'll listen in right now to this recording and this is a good example of what we try to tell people every single day that when we put on this uniform that we don't have any guarantees that we'll return home but yet we have a lot of great men and women across this entire country that do it every single day to make sure that you're safe in your communities all right so once again that was police chief Johnny Jennings with Charlotte meinberg Police essentially reflecting on the fact that the unthinkable has happened that you know these officers go out to do their Duty they're never guaranteed that they'll be home and unfortunately we see for three law enforcement officers that is that is the case if you are just joining us here right after just after six 30 bottom of the hour and expecting uh NBC Nightly News we have been on the air for uh the last few hours since about 2:00 and have been monitoring this breaking news officer involved shooting now we know that three task force members from the US um Marshall fugitive task force have uh been killed in the line of duty as they were serving a warrant on a felon a suspected felon for possession of a firearm and then another uh Task Force member was also shot in addition to four cmpd officers shot while responding to the scene when the task force was fired upon uh the gunman the initial gunman was uh deceased found deceased but the officers received additional gunfire as they were approaching this house in East Charlotte and so yes they they basically say in total eight law enforcement officers were shot and the police chief remarked had never recalled a situation in more than 30 years that he's been doing this job where they've had such a large toll if you will to to mention a large number to mention um he talked about the fact that yes this one suspect is dead but they have two others that they are questioning right now he referred to them as Persons of Interest our Colin Mayfield has been out they're at that briefing site so Colin heard firsthand this update from the police chief and other elected officials and we can clearly see the emotion having to allay this news yeah and you heard it said multiple times tragic day unfathomable day uh we were actually watching some um North Carolina state troopers kind of just debriefing four or five six of them here um in the parking lot and you don't often see that I know these men and women need time to process these emotions process the incident that they have gone through or maybe seen their comrades go through um but it's something that you don't normally see five wounded three killed eight total I've never seen this in my 13 years in television which is a short time um but but still you heard multiple professionals on scene talking about just just a harrowing day and then at the end um that response by Chief Johnny Jennings saying that despite of the actions today this is not going to um instill fear into cmpd that they're still going to be in these communities around Charlotte back in this community behind me here on rway Avenue again uh tomorrow policing and doing the job that they have signed on the dotted line for but um it's a day that nobody asked for uh it is a day that a lot of Law Enforcement Officers understand can happen and uh and today it did so yeah the mayor was out here along with ATF FBI as well and uh the mayor herself was visibly shaken I don't think I've seen her like that uh just a couple of a handful of times um one being a situation where we had with that four alarm fire in South Park uh last year so this is a day that I think uh all of Charlotte is going to take a little bit of time to kind of process uh and this is made national news let's not forget this is on headlines across uh America right now we even have our Michelle Bowden uh setting up for NBC Nightly News so just an interesting day uh and a tragic day uh nonetheless uh not only for the Charlotte Community but for law enforcement who put their their names on the line every single day yes indeed in their lives too for sure as we see unfortunately that yeah how this has transpired Colin said his short TV career in 13 years hasn't seen anything like this Chief Jennings said in his 32ye career hasn't seen an officer involved shooting that this being the most tragic he's seen and unfortunately a lot of us can say that about uh today as well we have new video where someone who was so close to the scene uh shot some video they are safe and they've given us permission to show their cell phone video of the shots that you could hear some of that gunfire being exchanged earlier uh this afternoon they oh they bust oh my God police right here all right so there you you see some of the accounts that we're getting from folks in the neighborhoods we've been hearing from various people saying that they heard the gunshots we're actually getting some new details Jane it sounds like the governor is is weighing in with some new information as well on on those who were killed yeah a little insight here too our hearts are with the families and co-workers of officers in today's brutal attack including two state department of adult correction officers working with the US Marshal's task force who were shot and killed so just for a little bit of background here when we've been hearing here from police that three US Marshall task force members were killed of course as you see here not all are US Marshals themselves so now we've been able to piece together a little bit more about the lives lost so we do know from a prior US Marshal statement that one of the task force members killed was actually with US Marshals they were a deputy Marshall and then now we're hearing of course from the governor it sounds like the two others were Corrections Officers so three task force members with the us all with the Tas Task Force One additional shot and then four cmpd officers also shot with one of those Charlotte meinberg officers in critical condition uh fighting for their life let's go over to our kin hagwood now who has been monitoring things about five minutes away from the scene but this scene has really grown and had little Min scenes across Charlotte kin absolutely I'm on I'm in the Shannon Park neighborhood near gway drive gway drive where this all taking place when the US Marshall were working to serve a warrant that turned into a shooting with these uh individuals um but it's really just been chaos that's the best way to describe it throughout the day uh as it just sort of expanded from here there were many many cmpd officers Charlotte um the uh meinberg County Sheriff's Office SWAT I saw myself medic the uh medic um bus for Mass casualties was also in the area um and the traffic was locked uh it was at that time time where students were getting out of school so you saw a lot of students uh sort of scattering you saw families trying to just get answers about what's going to happen uh with their kids some of them stopping us because we were in a news van saying hey do you know what's going on there were helicopters above this neighborhood I spoke to people in this neighborhood Who imagine they say it's quiet now this is how it normally is they say it's very quiet uh hearing one two three gunshots dozens of gunshots again and again not knowing what is taking place scared uh people hearing the reports from other areas of Charlotte calling their loved ones who live in these areas because again there are multiple neighborhoods in this general area uh letting people know hey is something going on where you live and then them finding out from that phone call and piecing everything together as they hear those the law enforcement sirens and the the different First Responders it's been extremely scary for all of the people who live in this neighborhood and of course we now know that three of those uh task force members have have died those members of law enforcement uh four cmpd officers in the hospital one fighting for their life this afternoon and another individual shot as well another member of law enforcement so yes it's been an extremely difficult day it's been an extremely scary day traffic locked up a lot of confusion from folks who live in this area uh as things sort of get back to normal there's really no true sense of normaly and Colin talked about that from the reaction of the mayor I wasn't at that press conference he's at that press conference I'm in a different location but I was listening in to that press conference from my ear and I could hear her voice shaken up uh this is one of our area leaders to hear her shaken up it just sort of speaks to just the gravity of this um and the chief speaking on just how momentous this is to have something like this happen um and the neighbors just sort of everyone kind of trying to get back to a sense of normal see some kids out playing uh parents obviously a top of mind for them uh as they work to uh just everyone kind of get back into the groove of things exactly kayn mayor becoming quite emotional uh when she was making a statement and just asking that our community respect and honor the officers that lost their life and we're going to continue to do what we can do to keep our our city and and make it safer yeah and to kin's point yes there are three families now that will not achieve a sense of normaly at this point ever again uh our Jesse Pierre also at that press conference today here off the plaza and monitoring things uh probably one of the first reporters to to set up a a live shot so to speak because traffic traffic was so snarled and and our crews were um had to be in a safe position because that scene was so active earlier Jesse but what can you tell us at this hour yes well like you mentioned yes I've been here for several hours and I was here during the presser and you know the cmpd chief Johnny Jennings you know one thing he said that stood out to me was we lost Heroes you know he confirmed that you know four people with US Marshals um were shot three died and then additionally four cmpd officers were also shot one of them in critical condition um you know these are folks who risk their lives to you know protect communities and so forth but unfortunately you know we are looking at the loss of three lives um again police chief calling this a tragedy for law enforcement as well as for the community now when we got here hours ago again early um afternoon you know roads were blocked there was a shelter in place that was in effect so all of that is done um Road roads that were closed are now reopen um however you can expect to see investigators near that home you know combing through that scene um you know probably for the next couple of days um throughout all of this you know even during the pressor and from community members you heard an outpouring level of support for those officers for the law enforcement Community overall because as we know one hurt means we all Hur um and so it's just a really tragic and sad day for law enforcement for those in the community and a really long day but you know as far as closures all of those things have reopened and um you know folks who live in that area no longer need to shelter in their homes and so forth but um again I think the main thing here is just that it was just a really sad um day um for everyone involved here so so true Jesse thank you so much and of course there's going to be so much left with this with this to follow I mean just as the chief said we we're still putting the story together uh and so there are going to be many more questions uh that will need to be asked as we learn more we're going to ask more uh we are wanting to know the conditions of the other officers that were hurt uh Austin Walker has been outside no medical uh monitoring the situation they're seeing a lot of Troopers and processions and um a lot of people coming out in in force to show their support uh for some of these officers Austin what do you see now yeah Jane I actually think you said it best right there we are just trying to put the pieces together and learn more because the story right now is not complete there are still a lot of questions that are left unanswered while cmpd did address a majority of them in a good amount there are still things that the community as well as us are still wondering at this point but yes today has been a very intense situation outside of Novant a very big police presence from multiple agencies across the state let's actually show you some video If we have it cured up and ready it's actually of state troopers zooming and speeding down Fourth Street uh on the way to novon uh again a big question we had was who was transported to the hospital uh from that scene now we did speak with novon and try to ask them exactly you know what they know so far and they directed us back to cmpd where they did not specifically answer the question of who was at Novant or any other Hospital in the area we do have a crew Julia Kaufman over at Atrium as well uh trying to get the same answers from their Department to see if anybody from those scene from that scene was also taken there now as of right now we uh are still again trying to put those pieces together but things for the most part on Hawthorne are pretty much calm as you can see behind me there's not much going on uh not a single cop in sight on the other side there are a few officers still outside of the hospital including agencies like um neck Linberg County Sheriffs and and uh C cmpd of course and Charlotte Fire and state troopers again because there it was a very intense earlier today so uh as we learn more we are uh updating you as we get that information on air and online but uh the scene as of right now very different from what it looked like just a few hours ago we first got here maybe about 2 and 1/ half hours ago very different it was just a gridlock of cars but as you can see uh we're hitting the 7:00 hour soon and um as of right now traffic is moving pretty much as is and has normal um but again at that 5 o' when people were getting out of work it was a little hectic but like mayor V says if you had to wait in traffic I don't think that was the importance of the day the fact that three individuals lost their life and they don't get to go home to their families uh as well as you know we are here with them and we are uh supporting them as the community continues to come together rallying behind those officers but for now we're live from novon Austin Walker WCNC Charlotte Austin thank you you can see traffic is back to normal but nothing normal about this day that's right all right so we do want to go ahead and check in with weather just because amid all of our reporting this afternoon we did not touch on the forecast at all and uh Brad what are you following for us this evening yeah a tough day here in Charlotte but we will talk about the forecast here is we've had lots of sunshine today temperatures still somewhat Pleasant out there around 80 degrees but tomorrow we're going to keep an eye on the potential for some scattered storms moving in late in the day so your weather headlines storms late tomorrow probably isolated into the evening hours near 90 by the end of the week and we're going to see some weekend rain a lot of events going on this weekend and right now looks like we got a slow moving front which is going to give us a chance for some rain tonight temperatures cool back down to about 60 degrees but as we see the mostly sunny skies today tomorrow this front which is falling apart it's not a very strong front that's why the rain chances tomorrow won't be very strong you see the severe the risk tonight and tomorrow will still be to our West even though the front heading our way is kind of falling apart so tomorrow just grab that umbrella especially late in the afternoon because as this front approaches it kind of falls apart but could kick off maybe a 20 30% chance of an isolated storm before we clear out for Thursday and Friday so tomorrow back up around the low 80s depending on the cloud cover but notice that 30% chance of an isolated storm and that chance of rain is mainly going to be in the afternoon we'll stop this around 5:00 P p.m and you can see not many storms around so certainly no wash out a lot of us will be completely dry tomorrow but as we go past Wednesday into Thursday that's when the heat really starts to crank up and we're going to be flirting with 90° for your Thursday and Friday and That Could set the stage for some rain this weekend because that's when the next front arrives so rain chances over the next 7 days notice they start ramping up Friday night but Saturday and Sunday certainly no washouts but a 40 to 50% chance of rain both days and if I had to pick one that had a better chance or higher chance of rain unfortunately it does look to be Saturday because here comes the front this is 8 o'clock in the morning slowing down a little bit and kind of stalling over us so scattered showers and storms Saturday by Sunday the front's weekend but it's still over us and that gives us a chance for an isolated shower and storm so you any outdoor plants this weekend and there are a ton of them festivals concerts just be prepared right now for some rain tonight though temperatures will cool back down into the 50s so still Pleasant even though temperatures have been warm the last couple of days the D points are staying pretty low and that's setting the stage for some pleasant mornings your Guy Roofing 7-day forecast shows those temperatures warming up to the mid and upper 80s by the end of the week we'll keep an eye on Saturday and Sunday right now looking at low 80s but a good chance of rain possible both days Brad thank you so much so as we wrap up here coming towards uh the top of the next hour almost upon 7 o'clock let's go ahead and take a look back at everything we have learned so far over this very long and uh difficult evening really for the Charlotte Community we're awaiting more information uh and we know that will come in the coming hours days and weeks but we can tell you at this hour three US Marshall Task Force officers have lost their life lives and then a cmpd officer is also fighting for theirs in the hospital four other law enforcement officers were hurt well all of this happening just after 1:00 this afternoon police say they were serving a felony warrant at a home on gwe Drive in East Charlotte when the shootout started one suspect is dead two other people uh police are calling them Persons of Interest they were inside they're being questioned right now so a very emotional day and as you could see by the mayor's remarks earlier ago uh her emotional remarks keep your prayers keep your faith make sure that these officers who have families have people to reach out and H them up because they will need this and we are a city that will make it possible for them to be this way to be able to live and know that we honor and respect the the loss that they have and we know that the support will come because we know the community steps up and does wrap their arms around our our Local Heroes when they are in their time of need and this is a time of need certainly the chief saying that the charlot community needs to come together more than ever and he spoke at the press conference as well and this is a good example of what we try to tell people every single day that when we put on this uniform that we don't have any guarantees that we'll return home but yet we have a lot of great men and women across this entire country that do it every single day to make sure that you're safe in your communities the chief speaking earlier today and he even said that in his 32-year career this is the most tragic officer involved shooting uh that he has seen yeah just talking about just talking about the loss of life the numbers the sheer numbers of officers who were hit um it just it was clear by his reaction that this was just a day he would never imagine that he would have to talk about um and we know that it was a difficult day for folks in the area too just a lot of confusion and and lack of information for a very surreal situation when you're hearing a gun popped and you thought it might be fire crackers there's one neighbor who uh was just shocked first of all at 2:00 they shut this street down so I asked somebody who was on the street what happened and he said they're shooting somebody's shooting so I came out and went to Shannon house to get into the neighborhood cuz my house is apparently in the middle of the center of all of this so coming across Shannon house the police stop all traffic you can't turn you can't come down the plaza anything so SWAT everybody starts coming apparently SWAT is pulled into our driveway from the cameras we can see that the police are getting out their car with their guns drawn so we don't know if the shooter is like there's a lake back there if the the shooter is there or where the shooter actually is in the midst of all this but I just know that they tell us we can't go home those who live in the neighborhood yeah there was a shelter in place uh for a long time for people who lived in the area and then like she said she just wanted to get her car people want just want to get their kids um so a lot of questions a lot of confusion and uh we've heard the word chaos uh often as well I think folks were just reading the situation and and understanding that it was scary I think folks were feeling scared themselves we heard so many accounts from different neighbors folks who were close and some who were kind of in the area but not that close still heard the gunfire we were even um we got that video we shared with folks earlier we can hear gunshots we've heard here from another neighbor who explained his experience with hearing the gunfire to take a listen there was about 50 cop cars and it happened in under 2 minutes um I've never seen that many police ever before um it took a couple videos um but cops were immediately trying to push people back there was cops hiding behind buildings um it was it was chaos so again chaos right uh but now things have been cleared up we've heard from uh our leaders and we've heard from the governor uh but just everybody weighing in and sharing their condolences and sympathies I mean this story unfortunately has uh made national news just another officer involved shooting yes and I mean we've even heard contact star Nate morido who does a lot of diving into figures kind of set set a scene for us really for what this incident means for the larger picture for law enforcement and he painted quite frankly a a sad picture in the sense that this Rapport that he dug into from Fraternal Order of Police found last year that the number of officers shot had reached a peak and just how that kind of illustrates the dangerous landscape for for law enforcement officers are now yes
