The Oropouche virus, also known as "sloth
fever," a potentially deadly disease, has made its way to the United States,
raising concerns among Americans. On Tuesday, Florida's health department confirmed 30 cases of
Oropouche fever within the state, all linked to travel from Cuba. Additionally, one case has
been reported in New York following travel.
Earlier this month, the CDC issued a health
advisory alerting clinicians and public health officials to the rising number of cases.
Countries reporting cases include Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Cuba. The
CDC emphasized that there is currently no evidence of local transmission within
the United States or its territories.
There are no vaccines or specific
treatments available for Oropouche, according to the CDC. The best preventive
measure is to avoid insect bites.
Sloth fever can present symptoms
similar to other mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue or chikungunya
fever, making it difficult to diagnose.
