green party delegates are set to decide
whether or not to invoke the so-called Walker jumping law to kick former green MP
darling Tanner out of parliament T is vowing to fight on to try and remain an MP and says
they're considering legal options if their former party colleagues pull the trigger
here's F A hi oh hi August 2023 Q&A was on my hickey Island visiting Tamaki Makoto
green candidate Darlene Tanner in campaign [Music] mode come in what a difference a year
makes it is hello how are you oh good good good to see you see you too yeah so this is your
office um yes this is this is uh your second your SEC it's my only office it's your only
office where were you before in the building the greens uh well with the greens yeah this is my
office indepent I'm guessing you're going across the seea d t back to 2023 again and Green's
co-leader Chloe swri happened to be on our FY to W hecki to see Tana she's a perfect example
of somebody who demonstrates and practice what her values of people in Planet are but the
green leader has changed her mind on [Music] that since the inquiry into Tana's family business
affairs centering around migrant employees T resigned from the greens has become an independent
NP and changed their pronouns the plurality comes from my T are literally with me all the time so
so that's why we we say that yes yes so I've never felt alone uh people see me sitting in that house
in the corner on my own they might feel out how please don't I am all good but dday for darene is
fast approaching it'll determine whether they have a future in Parliament in the meantime they're
busy sitting in on select committees and has been drafting a private members bill on Ocean health so
I'm here exactly where I need to be okay and you say you have got you have got support absolutely
I have support um I have support from green party members even um but lots of lots of members of
the public who aren't green party members who stand with me even now who remind me every day
who send me messages every day do they send you messages every day do they really send you
messages every day yes yes I get a few messages of people telling me to get lost but 3 to one people
telling me to stay one of those telling T to stay is artist vasim mother Tava one of the group
of Pacifica greens who recently resigned from the party and in a sensing darene being within cus
and then pushed out it sort of it was I mean we've used the term sort of cannibalism it was a way
of seeing someone just being eaten up by their own party and it was um really unpleasant
it made us all really reflect on a lot of experiences we'd had in the party that all started
to sort of um feel like they were playing out in a pattern nothing about this situation is nice or
fun or good I've been pretty clear that in fact it sucks and the best way to have had this
situation end in a way that minimized harm and hurt for all parties would have been for
Del T to take accountability and to resign one of the accusations or the way people dismiss you
out there is that you know the business has gone west you desperately need the money I'm a co-a
girl so I'm always going to stay on on coopa um money is is is important for survival don't get
me wrong but it's not at all what drives me but critics T claims have got a lot wrong oh look
it's really quite amusing when you're sitting there and having ice cream and watching TV with
your kids in your hubby and then you your phone starts buzzing and you get messages coming through
asking is it true have you separated from your husband but you haven't well I mean no no um
so we're sitting at home there and I'm looking across at him and I'm going what the heck have
you been saying now because he's been saying a lot last week darling tner circulated a lengthy
letter that sent to the greens offering reasons why the party hopping legislation shouldn't
be inv vote they cited a Supreme Court case involving former MP Donna haasa law professor
Andrew gtis suspects Tana has sought legal advice the particular judgment that she
points to the judge actually upholds the use of the party hopp law in that case on the basis
that the MP in question resigned their membership of the Party by accident here we have an MP who
has deliberately resigned her membership of the party so the Judgment she points to doesn't
actually really support her position at all next Sunday 200 greens delegates will decide
whether or not to send a notice to the speaker to invoke the party hopping act an act they
had vehemently opposed if they don't T remain in Parliament as an independent this former
Pacifica greens member reckons there will be people voting to keep Tana in I think Dalene
knows that there are people who got her back but will Tana mount a legal challenge if the party
hopping Bill isn't vote will you challenge that we'll have to see darling Tanner could go to court
and try to bring an action two problems with that is first of all it's going to cost her a lot of
money second problem is I don't think they have strong legal grounds to win and also there's
this added problem of parliamentary privilege that may stop the courts even being able to look
at this I really think this is a political battle that they are going to have to fight the legal
Avenues are very very limited for them back in the independent MP's windowless attic office
they're upbeat about what could be their last week in Parliament is it going to be a stressful
week in the lead up to to that decision um no more stressful than any other week I would say
there's always Mah to be done the greens hope to have the decision announced on Sunday officially
the first day of spring and New Beginnings for me this really just boils down to following the
process upholding natural Justice and doing the best that we can to put Focus back on people in
planet where it belongs and next Sunday Darlene tner will be in Northland with her people I'll
be surrounded by farno and Hau and I who know who I am who understand the skills I have and uh
know that well we've just got work to do [Music]
