CNN LIVE: Kamala Harris VS Donald Trump Presidential Debate 2024

push back on Harris and kind of pivot to what his argument is either against her or what he would do and what I've heard though from his advisers who've been talking to him in recent days is they've said don't underestimate vice president Harris because in his brain and the way he talks about her he often insults her intelligence and says he doesn't think she's very competent he'll in contrast say Hillary Clinton while he did not like her was a brilliant debater he thought but his allies have they been watching her Senate hearings they've watched her past debate performances in the Democratic primary and they've warned him that she can be a tough questioner and so that is what they're looking for they're hoping that the 2 minutes will be like it was for Biden where he often did not use all of the time and kind of trailed off and and as both of you reminded him often he had 30 more seconds or 45 more seconds that's of course something the Harris campaign is acutely aware of but Jake I would argue that the muted mics really prevent this from being a true debate in the 2020 debate that I did obviously Trump they now admit was kind of out of his mind and interrupted 145 times in 90 minutes not that I'm counting but but the fact is even in that debate there were some great exchanges uh when Trump kept interrupting and Biden said well you shut up man at one point I said would you tell that your right-wing supporters white supremacist supporters would you disavow them and he said like who and Biden said like the proud boys and Trump said proud boys stand back and stand by the problem now with these muted mics is it really isn't a debate with those interaction they're almost like simultaneous news conferences you get 2 minutes to answer you get two minutes to answer but you don't get the interaction which has been some of the most memorable moments in the debate since Dixon and Kennedy back in 196 I think that that's exactly right I mean ultimately that's also part of what the Harris campaign is looking at too they they want the ability uh for her to kind of create a moment potentially with Trump one of the things coming out of your debate that you and Dana moderated uh was that the complaints almost instantaneously that I was hearing from uh Biden advisers about all the the sort of waterfall of falsehoods coming from Trump and Biden's unwillingness inability to uh due both to his actual skill level in that debate and also the rules he couldn't even begin to stop it to stop them and I think muted microphones make that job a little bit harder and also raise the bar for what happens when it is her turn because then she's got to spend the first 30 seconds 45 seconds uh rebutting and that really eats up a lot of that time so in other words it's not just that she doesn't want Donald Trump restrained by the microphone rules she wants the ability to interrupt herself KLA Harris to say that's not true that's a lie as opposed to waiting that's what what Chris is saying is that that is sometimes how these moments are made is when you simply just point out that's not true and you don't have to say a whole lot in order for that to suddenly change the dynamic of the answer that the other person but they themselves are not so we may not be able to hear but if one of them is interjecting it can also be distracting or or potentially could work to get under his skin if she is respond that's really hard to do because you're they're going to be split screens and you know even if you can't hear for instance Trump if you see that he's talking while it's her two minutes and she's talking and there is going to be a pool of independent reporters in the room that'll get reported I I suspect that Trump and his people want to play by the rules and to keep quiet because they know that plays very much to their advantage it gives him discipline that he might not have himself two different things Trump and his people yes his people want him to play by the rules he's going in to play by the rules but you know better than any the rules in your debate he did pretty much because well he also took his foot off the gas when he saw what was happening I will say that the most famous rebuttal or at least one of the most famous rebuttal in history was Ronald Reagan responding to Walter Mondale in ' 84 and he waited for M like he was waited for his turn he didn't interrupt to say there you go again I I think though times are different times are different but I'm just saying if if you have a good Zinger you have a good Zinger whether you've waited two minutes or not I think that perhaps that's more KLA Harris's style anyway but we'll we'll see we'll see there's much more ahead as we close in on tonight's debate and lay out the stakes for vice president Harris and former president Trump Straight Ahead Republican senator and Trump supporter Marco Rubio is going to join us live debate night in America continues [Music] CNN [Music] here in Philadelphia Donald Trump's walkthrough of the debate stage is currently underway we're counting down to his historic faceoff with vice president kamla Harris that could potentially tilt the balance of what has been in recent weeks a razor close presidential race and you're going to see it all play out live on CNN joining us now here in Philadelphia is Republican senator Marco Rubio of Florida a supporter of President Trump Senator Rubio you've been on the debate stage with Donald Trump you know firsthand how things can turn personal nasty what's your advice to president Trump tonight should he stay on policy focus on policy or as he says do it my way on the debate stage well I think do it his way but his way is going to be different in every debate it depends on the direction the debate goes you know he's I think because of probably natural to him and instinctive but also because of years of being on television and being in front of the camera I think he's got a real good feel for how the audience is viewing an event how the audience is viewing the presentation I think that was a big advantage to him in 2016 as well and so um and that's why I think he should trust that now obviously there going to be specific policy questions and things of that nature and I know he's put in the time but you know I think one of the things that really helps him is he does a lot of interviews he answers a lot of questions KL Harris doesn't I I I don't believe she's had a single solo interview since she became the nominee and uh you know she won't have note cards and she won't have a teleprompter tonight so I think a lot of people are going to be tuning in to to watch that particularly those of us who have been followers of this process and of her career having served with her in the Senate and having watched her as vice president is uh whether she's going to be able to actually speak authentically without the benefit of notes and talking points a source tell CNN that former president Trump is being being advised to not respond if kamla Harris gets under his skin uh do you think he'll be able to do that it it can be tough of course that in the past look there's been some pretty brutal things said about Donald Trump in debates and interviews and he responds differently depending on the circumstances in the setting I'm not I'm not worried about the performative part of this because he's a I think a naturally gifted Communicator in that regard I think the important thing we're going to there important issues facing this country you know our economy continues with stubborn inflation uh people are just can't afford the cost of living which in some key sectors keeps going up I think the mortgage rates are the highest have been in a quarter Century uh our border is and we're seeing the impact of uncontrolled immigration into our country and obviously there's a lot going on around the world that's very dangerous and troubling so these are real issues beyond all the performative and the theater aspect of a debate and there's some aspect of it but those are the things that people are going to hear about you know Comm Harris has basically been reluctant to even discussed policy issues I think she just put up something on her website two days ago which largely was cut and paced out of the Biden campaign's website and um and has changed their position I mean dramatically and radically changed their position from what she stood for in 2019 and 20120 just four short years ago when she was running for president herself the first time so I think that's going to be a real good point of contention on a comparison on on the important issues facing our country and that's a debate our our Americans deserve this is an important election they all are but this one's really important Suburban women uh and women in v in general are are going to be key voters uh both candidates are are trying to Target this evening Donald Trump has been out there trying to it seems in some in some instances moderate his message on abortion talking about how he does not support a national ban um he recently gave mix signals on the six week abortion ban in your home state of Florida and and he got some blowback uh from anti-abortion conservatives um what do you think he should be doing when it comes to the the issue of abortion should he be just proudly saying that because of the justices he appointed roie Wade was overturned uh should he be trying to sound more moderate on the issue well look this is obviously a contentious issue it's also a very personal issue to people I have very strong views about it they may not totally align with somebody else's views on it he's the most pro-life C Cate in this race now I think his position as he's described it is he doesn't want to federalize abortion law he wants it to be decided at the state level through elected legislators voters get to decide it through them the ones who want to federalize abortion practices in this country is Comm Harris who basically wants to pass a federal bill that in essence though they'll never admit this will allow abortion almost for any reason at any time paid for by taxpayers so I do think there's a point of contrast there he wants to leave it to voters at the states through their legislators to decide what what the law should be in their state and she wants to federalize it but you know I think on his views and so forth um I don't think it's about moderating I think he's describing an aspect of what the federal government's role should and should not be on an issue like this and saying I trust the people of the states through their elected representatives to decide how they want this to be regulated at the state level Vice Presidential nominee uh JD Vance said yesterday that if he were the Vice President in 2020 he would have asked the states to submit alternate slates of electors uh you voted to certify the 2020 election if the issue of the 2020 election comes up during the debate this evening and I suspect it will how should president Trump handle it well I think it's very clear that in a number of states who had never done mail and balloting who had never done anything else used Co to basically take off all kinds of restrictions and not even apply their own laws and we know this after the fact in States like Wisconsin and others now some states ran great look I'm very proud of the way Florida runs elections we haven't always had great elections in Florida but in recent years you've seen how the reforms we made and how applying our laws have led to that you know about half of of what's most important about these elections obviously the vote count is important that it' be accurate but also public confidence and when people are citing instances of where laws are not being followed or certain things are being allowed that maybe should not have been allowed uh because it violates your own laws or you have States entering into consent decrees to ignore their own laws uh uh without uh legislative input it's going to create all kinds of questions and I think in a number of states this happened it happened in this state it happened in Wisconsin it happened in Arizona and and even somewhat in Georgia so I think he should be pretty clear but when he talks about the interference in I think one of the main points that he points to about 2020 is very damaging information about Joe Biden and his son was censored from kept from the American public for something that we know now to be true people flat out would not cover or misrepresented what the laptop meant that was information American should have had access to before voting and they didn't and he views that as clear interference uh by a handful of people including 50-some Former Intelligence Officers or officials who signed a letter saying something that turned out not to be true that somehow that that lap talk was fake and it was actually a product of Russian disinformation so I think you should point to those things because those are valid things to talk about that happened in 2020 and some of those things under the cover an excuse of co uh using CO as an excuse to allow anyone to vote anywh they wanted well obviously for the record I mean it wasn't the case that anyone who wanted to vote could vote anywhere and the Attorney General Bill bar said that there wasn't enough widespread fraud to have changed the course of the election Senator marar Rubio we appreciate your time tonight thank you so much still ahead this is not about fraud this is about yeah go ahead oh no I'm say this is not just about fraud this is about the way elections are conducted and the having drop in boxes and places like Wisconsin votes that were counted that should not have been done because they were not done according to the law these are the kinds of things you talk about that doesn't mean fraud that means they didn't follow the law and that undermines public confidence and opens the door in a close election for a losing side to point to those things and undermine public confidence in the elections that's why it's so important that elections be done in a way in which the laws are follow transparently and clearly still ahead thank you so much Senator Marco Ruby I really appreciate it still ahead how Donald Trump and kamla Harris differ in debate Styles and experience it's all leading up to their onstage Showdown Which is less than 90 minutes away our live coverage from Philadelphia continues the city hosts the first debate between Donald Trump and kamla Harris both getting ready to make their case to voters especially voters in the Battleground states that matter so much like Pennsylvania where of course they are tonight so let's go to CNN's Priscilla Alvarez covering the Harris campaign so Priscilla you've been talking to your sources in the campaign how has the vice president spent these Final hours before for the first time she is face Toof face with Donald Trump well Aaron once where was telling me that she has been reviewing issues and themes that she might want to hit in on the debate stage tonight but also reviewing possible debate scenarios and so far our allies and AIDS are feeling pretty good uh saying that she is very prepared to go toe-to-toe against former president Donald Trump now of course President Joe Biden also waited on this earlier today telling reporters that he also spoke with the vice president and that in that conversation she appeared quote calm cool and collected of course the vice president has been hunkered down on in debate camp in Pittsburgh over the last several days now heading here or already here in Philadelphia where she again has been reviewing those last minutes issues Aaron all right Priscilla thank you very much and obviously you know it's interesting Priscilla Audi talking about how the vice president's been preparing and she's been in Pennsylvania of course Trump we saw just get off the plane I whatever 6:30 6:45 local so couple hours before lands goes in totally different ways of preparing in these final moments well I I think more broadly also there's way more game tape of trump so to speak I mean he's done upwards of seven debates he doesn't have as much to look at to see how she performs and what that will mean the only other thing I'd bring up is that you know we've we don't we have a very small sample size but we know we do judge women on their tone tenor whether they interrupt and ironically this will be a race where this will be a debate where people will ask that about Trump how does he behave how does he interrupt because that is actually a sore point for him particularly with women i i a couple of things one is what it seems to me given what we said earlier about what her uh what her um requirements are here that she needs to stick and go back to the camera stick and go so use him and push off of him and then go back and not get into long engagements but but but just just on the there's a stark difference between he's a sort of improvisational player she's she she's a classical musician right she's gonna go over the she's got cheap music and she knows what the play she's going to run and the question is can does does it work out I agree with you he's he's a freewheeler you know he's reacting in the moment you know there there's not a lot of canned stuff that I think he's trying to deliver when I think about her style over the last several debates going all the way back to the Democratic primary before it a lot of it is contrived remember she had the contrived moment against Biden where she wanted to imply imp that he was a racist and the t-shirts were for sale the second after exactly then we go to the m then we go to the m yeah maybe more than impli then we go to the Mike Pence debate I'm speaking I'm speaking even though he wasn't speaking you know she she she had that cont moment kind of uh and so I I feel like they are likely to bring some contrived item in here tonight the question is does it land I always find these things to be totally artificial superficial uh and we you know we'll see if it works tonight but I bet you she does it but what you call contrived we call being prepared so like what how you deliver it does it look like it's contrived or does it look natural well look I I think uh this is a big opportunity for her people think about her as a prosecutor and they think oh she's going to get there and kind of prosecute the case it's it's not the same when you're in courtroom or when you're a senator you're able to just like nail somebody down this is a different thing there you can be all attack in the debate you've got to be attack defend and Counterattack she's been good at that sometimes and not good at sometimes so tonight you're going to get a chance to see did this preparation prepare her to do the set pieces but also to be able to respond I see I want to see Senate Judiciary kamla Harris yes I want to see her be able to understand what part uh I don't know when she Bill bar talked uh uh questioned Bill bar really hard kav Li about kav Jeff sessions um those are those are because because it is somewhat scripted which look let's just be honest if your candidate is going up unscripted which is a big risk for your guy tonight if he goes off script we don't know what we that's that's that's why they love him there is no scpt if she if she is able to stick to her script but also get some zingers in there that's the commo that people like so Alysa can we talk about what we've all been talking about sort of when we weren't on camera which is the the we can't talk about that some parts of that um the set we don't know if they're going to brighten up the lighting here or not right but I mean you've got podiums of different heights and you know so when they are interacting with each other even if they're only showing a split screen there is the reality of how it feels when you're you know it's like you're in we were saying sort an amusement park where your table's a lot lower than someone else's table this affects them yeah and what strikes me is also how close the podiums are is there's extensive negotiations around these ahead of debates they've of course never been in a room like this together other than the state of the union with hundreds of other people and there's nothing really organic about standing at a Podium with two moderators and your arch nemesis next to you and you have to do it and try to have Charisma try to speak directly to the audience at home watching but I'm fascinated on how Trump is going to manage tonight just really quickly this is somebody who's been less and less disciplin this campaign it's not the candidate of 2016 it's not even the candidate of 2020 the Biden debate Biden was so bad we forget how bad Donald Trump was he has about a 15minute window of focus on issues and then it goes downhill and it says golf handicap and other things so if she can stay on the issues and he goes off the rails it could be a good night listen just he he I'm sorry D I was just gonna say listen this is to go to your sports analogy way back again I this is the Super Bowl right if you haven't been to the Super Bowl you haven't been to the Super Bowl you may have been to the playoffs a bunch being the vice president you're in the playoffs Donald Trump is the Tom Brady of these debates he's been about 10 of them you're going down the field Tom my point my point is he's been he's been he's done this before a lots of times no matter how prepared you are axe knows this until you're out there you're not yeah experience matters here look the Biden Trump debate they went into that debate essentially tied it changed the course of this year changed the course of history they go into this debate essentially tied will it there's your question by I don't even like talk 90 minutes and then said it wasn't even 90 minutes and where that happened it would argue it was in the first 12 but found Brady's the goat they're playing the music they're now playing the music on us a hear from some of the most important debate Watchers tonight our focus group of Pennsylvania voters ready to weigh in you're watching debate night in America live on CNN African voices Chang makers in association with glow Unlimited when you think of African music you rarely think of a death metal [Music] band but here in bana the underground death metal scene is universal language for everyone it's a music that unites and can contribute positively to the world news happens fast and travels faster changing the world as we know it we'll connect you to what truly matters globally we're your Bridge first move with Julia chat on CNN [Music] [Music] I'm Nick Robertson in the West Bank and this is CNN [Music] n [Music] I'm Rael Solomon in New York and this is CNN we're live in Philadelphia Pennsylvania one of the crucial Battlegrounds in the 2024 election Philadelphia is about to host a very important presidential debate featuring vice president KL Harris and former president Donald Trump their very first face-to-face showdown in fact it's the very first time these two will have ever met we're going to get realtime reaction to the debate from voters in Pennsylvania CNN's Phil madingley is with our Focus Group in the great Berg of Erie Pennsylvania Phil tell us more about who's with you and how they're going to be watching the debate tonight yeah Jake we're here on the campus of Mercy HST University in Erie Pennsylvania and you talk about how important the Keystone State is for either candidates path to 270 electoral votes there's probably no more important County than Erie County it's a county that was won by Barack Obama then W by Donald Trump by just 1,800 votes in 2016 Joe Biden flipped it back by about 1,500 votes in 2020 this is a Battleground County in the most important of battleground States that's why we're here and that's why the people behind me are so critical these are voters who have not made up their minds yet now they have supported Democrats and Republicans in the past some of them have supported President Biden or former president Trump in the past but they tell us they have not made up their minds as of this moment so they will be watching the debate with us each of them will have a dial we'll be able to track that dial throughout the course of the debate if they turn it to the right it means they're positive about whatever is being said or talked about on stage if they turn it to the left they're not feeling as good about whatever is being said so we'll track that throughout see how people are feeling about specific moments and go back through those moments with them but before we really kick things off before the debate actually starts itself I want to get a sense from people just show of hands this debate you have not made up your minds yet some are leaning one way or the other how many of you feel like this debate will be determinative for who you vote for in November raise your hands Michelle I want to go to you why explain what you're looking for tonight well I'm looking for it my important thing is um because I'm a grandmother and a mother and I I'm really concerned about the economy that is where my big um issues lie and I would like to see where they both stand as far as supporting the economy and um especially jobs and um way the cost of living has increased and even like housing the housing market so there's just so many things that I worry about for my children and for my grandchildren now as you all weigh this decision this critical decision for the 2024 election how many feel like you need to know more specifically about vice president Harris given her relatively new role as the Democratic candidate show of hands so Jake you see there are a lot of people whose decisions are very much up in the air maybe leaning one way or the other at this point uh in time but they want to know what the candidates have to say tonight and they make very clear you saw it with the show of hands their decisions may be based on what they hear over the course of that debate Jake all right thanks Phil mingly really appreciate it CNN Special coverage of the Harris Trump presidential debate continues right now [Applause] [Music] tonight the road to the White House is leading through Philadelphia in the crucial 2024 Battleground state of Pennsylvania we're standing by for the start of the first and possibly only presidential debate between vice president kamla Harris and former uh president Donald Trump it is debate night in America on this special edition of ac360 good evening I'm Anderson Cooper along with Jake TAA in Philadelphia Jake both candidates are hoping to move to needle tonight and they're very close and obviously incredible consequential presidential rise that's right Anderson this could prove to be the most significant test for both vice president Harris and former president Trump in this final Sprint to election day millions of Americans are expected to be watching tens of millions when they walk onto the stage at the national Constitution Center here in the great city of Philadelphia about an hour from now our anchors our correspondents our analysts are here covering the strategy and the expectations as we get closer to this high stakes debate that you will see live right here on CNN Anderson want to check in first we see is Christen Kristen Holmes covering the Trump campaign so let's talk about how the former president has been spending his time as he gets closer to this debate yeah Anderson Well if you're curious how he spent the last few hours you can look no further than truth social just as he was Landing in Philadelphia he was posting on his social media platform not about the importance of the evening or the critical nature of this debate but instead AI cat memes now this of course comes as Donald Trump's campaign and other prominent Republicans have been pushing a false rumor about Haitian immigrants eating pets now one of the biggest most vocal per perpetrators of this rumor is none other than far-right activist Laura lomer who was spotted getting off of Donald Trump's plane with Donald Trump and other Trump staffers tonight in Philadelphia they flew up from his maralago home now you can see these memes in front of you they one of them is him surrounded by ducks and cats it seems to be on his plane another one appears to be a cat in a Maga hat holding a gun now just to be very clear even earlier today vice presidential candidate JD Vance acknowledged that these rumors that Haitian immigrants were kidnapping pets in Springfield Ohio might not be true but still encouraged people to post these various cat memes the City of Springfield has said essentially there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed so just to make all of that very clear but this is what Donald Trump was doing in the moments that he got to Philadelphia while likely we would expect him to be instead preparing for this debate now he has spent several days hold up at maral Lago they've been doing their version of debate prep but again goes to show you where his head is at and what he's up to as the in these moments leading up to this critical moment all right I want to go to Priscilla Alvarez covering the Harris campaign so what more you picking up about the vice president's strategy this evening well certainly the vice president's debate team has been preparing her for some of former president Donald Trump's most popular line of attacks that includes her immigration record and the administration's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan now the Trump campaign previewed as much this week essentially indicating that the former president would pursue those lines of attack against Harris on the debate stage and presented with that Harris AIDS and allies expect that the vice president is going to paint Trump as unserious and essentially describe his policy sees uh as unpopular all of this to essentially avoid taking the bait that includes one of those labels that the former president often uses for Harris calling her the borders are of course the vice president was not Ted with border security instead tapped to address root causes of migration but she will be presenting that case on the debate stage today all of this Anderson really boiling down to Harris uh flipping the script here and using Trump's own words and actions uh against him all right thanks very much we'll check in a little bit later David axod you have been with a president backstage waiting to go out on on a debate uh I've moderated one of these debates is stressful for the moderators what is it like being with the the principal being with a candidate uh in these moments I'll tell you you can tell a lot from how the candidate behaves before the debate before our first debate in Denver in 2012 you could see that the president was not he was sort of like let's get this over with and get out of here and we left the locker room and David Pluff who's helping on this prep and I looked at each other and said we're going to have a bad night the next you could tell we could tell the next time we had had some very good prep he really clearly knew what he wanted to do on that stage we knew what he was going to do on that stage and he as we were leaving he pulled us back and he said I just want you to know we're going to have a good night and we did so there is a feeling I mean there's tension but uh you can tell from the principle this is a little weird though the whole cat deal maybe he's that's how he gets into game shape I don't know you know I sawl I saw Jason Miller this morning on TV saying you know she's doesn't know what she's in for this is the Muhammad Ali this is the Floyd Merryweather if I were them I'd worry about him knocking himself out Trump doesn't uh really prepare in a traditional way in any sense I've been with him ahead of town halls and interviews and often times he becomes a victim you could say of the last person who was in his ear so when you read the roll call of who got off of the plane with him tonight I think that would be concerning in that he's trying to win a general election and communicate to a mass audience and you have people the likes of Laura lomer who may be saying hey here's what you need to talk about he if he can stick to the kitchen table issues the border the economy he's going to be fine but we have seen him many times if one person gets an idea in his head if he thinks cat memes is the direction to go this could go quickly off the rails for him tonight FY to your point I'm we'll know tonight whether he is actually trying to appeal to a mass amount of people or if he's trying to appeal to a very specific subset of people in in certain counties I won't get into the cat name thing but it actually follows in with you know racial hierarchy of immigrants in this country it's actually quite an ugly set of commentary that will hearken back to past things that were rumored that the Trump Administration was talking about these are the kinds of things that are going to jog the memory of certain sliver of the voting population that already feels dissatisfaction with behavior and conduct so will you see that tonight that's sort of what I'm looking for and and I think this cat thing is really disgusting I just want to just I just want to be very clear about it um they're if if you've missed this if you have a real life they're saying that Haitians Haitian immigrants are stealing people's cats and eating them and it's a complete lie and I hope that the Haitians in Florida where Trump is only up by two pay attention this is what he thinks about you well he called the country you know a [ __ ] hole so so so Haitians in Florida take note but but this is who he is right this is who he is and you have to JD van started that J started this JD started from rightwing message boards to gab 2x the pipeline from that to to talking point is pretty disturbing and fascinating to see abely so you're in this critical phase of the election it is as close as it can be and this is what they are doing this is crazy conspiracy stuff right this is why TR this like Willie Horton stuff it's just it you know in a different but this is why he lost the last election because a sliver of people who who many of whom right now think they might vote for him because they're worried about inflation they are Republicans they don't like the Biden record they don't know enough about commo Harris but this is ingesting bleach all over again this is and again in in recent days what did JD Vance said he would not do what Mike Pence did he would invite the states to send in he calls them alternative electors that's fake they don't exist there's no legal grounds for it it's a lie it's cheating okay and then Donald Trump goes before the largest police organization in the country and says get your badges out keep your eyes open because we will win big unless there's cheating uh so why is he going back to this at this key point in the election because that's what lost him the last election I know I no go ahead well I know that you all won't agree when I say this but oh sure how do you know but Alyssa's point about sticking to the issues of immigration and economy well there is a way that that actually could play to kamla Harris's favor if you are able to invoke him saying very derogatory things like he is known to say and when you have someone like Aura lummer and you're posting AI images of what he was posting earlier that could actually backfire on him and expose the type of person that John is talking about that doesn't want to bring our country together that just wants to be divisive I also think on the economy people do want to hear we heard one of the undecided voters in our focus group they do want to hear and so if he's talking about black jobs cuz he said that in the last debate and Harris is talking about how all Americans deserve jobs it could backfire remember the format here too this format is very tight it's like yeah a minute it doesn't allow it's very short we're not going to get long diet tribes here and and one of the things that they were talking about is Afghanistan let's just remember Afghanistan is going to be play a large part today we had the gold gold medal ceremony in the capital where those the you know the service men and women's families are giving the gold medal um KL Harris is going to be a big feature here has not met with those families in three and a half years despite that asking I suspect they'll get a question or trumple that'll be raised here tonight go yeah look no matter what happens there's really only one thing he has to do tonight keep it simple if you're unhappy you need to assess what your level of unhappiness is and whether she's responsible for it and whether you want to leave the same people in charge whether you go down the economy immigration or crime anything else if he gets lost come right back to the promised land of change I want to check in with Jeff zelen who's at the debate spin room we'll soon find out how the debate rules both candidates have agreed to actually play out on stage but to the point we're just making they are very tight they don't allow for a lot of cross talk or frankly follow us at least that is the design Anderson of course anything can happen on stage but both of these campaigns have been really litigating these rules uh for weeks but these are the final set of rules going into the debate this debate will be 90 minutes long with two commercial breaks there will not be a live audience at all so it will be the first time the two candidates have ever met one another face to face and they certainly will not be allowed to bring props or briefing papers there also will not be opening statements there will be closing statements and because of a coin toss earlier this week Donald Trump will have the final word here but we also got a sense earlier today of what the uh stage actually looks like this video from ABC News uh shows the podiums first and foremost look how close they are 6 feet apart this is very uh close range after these candidates have been sparring at long distance uh for so long uh these clocks perhaps one of the most important things here the candidates have 2 minutes to speak these clocks right here will count down and they are colorcoded as well the arrival will have 2 minutes to a reut but finally the microphones this was the most um contentious issue of all among the candidates should the microphones be muted or not the agreed upon rule is when the Rival uh is uh speaking the uh person's microphone will be muted so when uh the former president is speaking vice president Harris's mic will be muted and vice versa we will see if that uh actually happens or if we can hear the cross talk between them or not but after the debate after that 90-minute debate all of the uh advisers and supporters will come right here to the spin room it's already getting pretty busy in here we've seen several Senators uh come in we've seen uh RFK Jr just a couple minutes ago come in he of course is supporting former president Donald Trump but for all the talk of spinning this debate what actually happens in the debate on the debate stage that is going to resonate with voters so uh yes this room will fill up you will see uh people giving interviews but the reality is the 90 minutes are the most important thing perhaps for the rest of this campaign all right Jeff thanks very much I want to get more on the debate rule about muted microphone CNN Chief media analyst Brian stelter joins us so the Harris Camp balk But ultimately agreed to the muted mic rule that was also in play during the Biden Trump debate on CNN in June what do you know about kind of inside this right back in June TV critics and political professionals were generally supportive of this change it helped create a actual debate but when Harris became the nominee some of these conversations changed Harris AIDS wanted the mics to be live and hot the entire time they even tried to go Trump into agreeing to it and they suggested that the Trump campaign were were cowards for not going along with it but eventually the Harris campaign agreed to these terms the mics will be mut here's the interesting Scuttle but though tonight Anderson uh here in the spin room and at ABC News there is talk that ABC producers may open up the mics if something really newsworthy happens if something editorially significant happens maybe the producers will in real time make a change ABC says no agreements have been made about that but it'll be very curious also there will be a small group of outside reporters inside this debate Hall so they'll be able to hear whatever happens between Trump and Harris even if television microphones don't pick it up however this goes tonight Anderson however ABC performs will go a long way to determining if there will be another debate later this fall all right Brian stelter thanks very much back with the team I mean it's interesting David with these debate rules um you know these things are timed out when you are moderating one of these things you have gained this out you know everything that Donald Trump has said you know everything that KLA Harris has said you think about try to figure out three questions ahead well if I ask this he's going to say this then I'll follow up with this but with these rules it's two minutes it's one minute it's one minute there's not a lot of followup there's not unless people break the format break the rules and that's always a chance with him one thing that I wanted to say is the Harris people have been preparing in much the way we did which is they created an App a fact simile of the set an exact fa simile they do a series of mock uh debates that follow those rules precisely the whole idea is to make your candidate so comfortable and so familiar with what's like to happen that they're not in a position to try and do too much on the stage that they know what they're going to do when these situations arise that's not how Trump operates no and by the way if if the the editors or whomever decides to change the rules on the Fly I think they the world will come apart I find that hard to I don't think anyone's gonna decide like oh we're gonna unmute her mic all of a sudden or unmute his mic the the world will come apart but listen Donald Trump's a non-traditional candidate um he's been doing this for many years he's got a sense of stage craft and and and television you know he did The Apprentice for 13 years the guy knows TV and he knows production and so that's where he makes one thing that striking though you look at the debate eight years ago and him today not really the same guy he really is not you know what I think is great you haven't changed a bit we we've talked a lot about the muted mics but I actually think as important as the fact there's no audience yeah it's huge and in the in the Republican primary we covered these debates out here I hated it that it felt like a Roman Coliseum it just you know it was weird playing to the crowd and so you take the audience out of it and you also take for Trump you know he doesn't feel like he has to entertain 500 people sitting in front of him he can talk directly to the camera and do and so I I like that they've done and I hope this is the norm because I think the other way it's when you think back to the last debate uh not that a lot of Democrats want to think back to the last debate but but you could watch Trump sort of analyze the situation in real time of the implosion of President Biden yes assessing how much do I need to actually engage how much do I need to attack and sort of realizing he could just r i mean he's like playing he's like riding a a surfboard he's sort of sensing the current I think I think that's that's right I think not that he would get on a surfboard but but I think I like the visual but I think I think what's interesting is that Trump has not been present yeah the past couple weeks he has been increasingly uh weird his syntax is weird he jumps all around he doesn't make a lot of sense if you've been following the Trump so soap proper you can kind of keep up with what he's saying but if tonight if he shows up and KLA is doing well and he starts to deom decompensate the way he's been doing on stage it could be a very weird especially if he turns to him and says to him what he said to Biden which is I don't even know what he said I'm not sure he did either that be that would be the line of that be the clap back the the other unknown is you know clearly anybody who covered com Harris you know back in a run in in 2019 didn't make it to 20 20 uh excuse me yeah funny um you know she's a much better candidate giving a speech I mean her skill level has gone up a lot we haven't seen a lot of interviews so we don't know how good she is on that she did find you know seemly in The danab Bash interview um we don't really know what her debating skills now are like how they've evolved from the last time everything we have seen so far she's a completely different candidate than she was running in the primaries however however uh she had a debate with Mike Pence a one-on-one debate the back in the reason where she was not a very good debater that was with the crowd so we haven't seen her this moment there's no question in what we have seen the sample we have of speeches the convention retailing uh even the bus stores uh she's a very different person a much more confident a much more steady campaigner however we have not seen this and this is theing test she'll do well we're nearing the start of the Harris Trump debate in the first look at how the candidates interact or don't interact on stage they never met for still ahead a high-profile Harris supporter joins us live California governor Gavin Newsome this debate night in Mark Stewart on Marketplace Asia Sunday on CNN I'm elenie [ __ ] in Dubai and this is [Music] CNN we're closing in on the high stakes presidential debate between Vice president kamla Harris and Donald Trump the former president here in Historic Philadelphia the vice president the former president about to meet in person this will be the very first time that they have ever met even though Donald Trump did give her campaign money when she was running for Attorney General of California he of course did not go to the inaugural in 2021 which meant that he didn't get to meet the new vice president um let's uh bring up a montage now if we can of son of uh Donald Trump's best worst most notable moments from past debates and then we'll talk about him as a debater do you still want to ban fracking no and I made that 2020 that sentence I don't think he knows what he said either to right boys stand back and stand by we change they built the cages they who built the cages Joe it's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country because you'd be in jail such a nasty woman Donald relax go ahead I'm relaxed you're the basket Cas don't worry about it Little Marco I will all right well let's hear big big Donald don't worry about it don't worry about it Little Marco all right so some of those are the highlights low lights whatever you want to call them uh Chris what are his strengths as a debater uh what are his weaknesses do you think well I think his biggest strength is he doesn't talk like a politician I remember taking part in the First debate that he participated in in August of 2015 in Cleveland a year before the Republican convention and there were I think 10 Republicans on the stage Governors and senators and all kinds of people and he was there and at one point he he made that point that you know I don't talk like these politicians I talk like a real person and it was true because when you started hearing a number of the other people you you realize that he talked like somebody on the street which I think made him much much more accessible uh there are no bounds to what he will say one of the clips there was cut maybe censored before we got to it was when he got in a conversation with Marco Rubio in Detroit and Marco Rubio was making fun of his having small hands and he proceeded to say yeah you know people think that's an indication of something and let me tell you there are no complaints and so whatever you think is the bottom that he would go to no he would go further than that um if if that's his strength his his weakness is is a lack of discipline and the fact that when he's told you know stick to this don't do that I'll give you just a quick example I was talking to one of his top AIDS the other day and I said what happens about if he is brought into a conversation about 2020 he said he wants to talk about it and I can't say that he won't talk about it but he's been told that it's a bad idea to talk about it and you should be forward facing which to me basically meant we have as his top AIDS we have no idea whether if that gets into a conversation about retiga 2020 whether he'll do it or not I also think the point you were making about Trump not talking like a politician was certainly true in 2016 also to some extent in 2020 but just like if you go back and you watch old videos of Joe Biden and those old debates the Donald Trump of today is not the Donald Trump of yester year and he has slowed down himself in a lot of ways he's not as quick on his feet he doesn't talk like a politician but it makes a lot less sense than even compared to four years ago and that is part of the dynamic that will be much more pronounced on the stage tonight than it was with Biden because of how Biden really really struggled Trump is struggling he's struggling with putting sentences together with with making points make sense and he struggled at the debate that you all moderated it just wasn't the number one thing that people noticed because something else was happening on that stage so something that speaker Johnson has told House Republicans is that they should criticize kamla Harris when it comes to policy and they should criticize her when it comes to the record of the Biden Harris Administration but they should keep away from talking about uh attacks that are racial or gender-based Donald Trump has not done that Donald Trump has attacked her falsely saying that she didn't identify as black until recently and he reposted something on social media a crude suggestion uh that she had exchanged sexual favors uh to get ahead in her career zero evidence for that and it's a disgusting sleazy slimy thing to say I have to believe that his advisers are most worried of him going there absolutely they're and they're worried about what they can't even fathom even beyond that even though that was a repost and you know it's totally understandable that we are focusing on Donald Trump because he is a a character unlike any that we have ever Covered In Our Lifetime but I do think that tonight the focus is going to be much more by by uh the people who matter most which the undecided voters particularly in places like where we are right now in Pennsylvania on her because he's a known quantity and she isn't and if you look at all the polls particularly those from over the weekend Jake the um question of who is she and what does she stand for she has a lot of room to grow now she has a lot of room to grow and she also has room to fall so there's risk and reward with the fact that she's a bit unknown but I I do think that the sort of reframing a little bit of how certainly I I'll tell you how I'm going to be looking at it is instead of you know what is he going to do because he's such a wild card I'm really interesting interested to see how she presents herself in a way that those voters will get to understand well and to Chris's point about Trump's strengths on the debate stage and looking at those poll numbers for Harris one of the things that he did well in 2016 was he's able to find people's weaknesses or maybe it's not their known weakness he can turn it into one against them that is what he's going to try to do with Harris and her policy reversals on that debate stage tonight and also just the fact that he has been on a presidential debate St de debate stage obviously many more times than than she has that's what his team is counting on but what Donald Trump is also about to do is be on a debate stage with a woman for the first time in eight years and he Donald Trump does have a woman problem when it comes to voters his campaign is acutely aware of this they look at the numbers and when you look at single women and the deficit that he has with them including in recent polls those numbers have not changed that's something that he's going to be dealing with on that debate stage tonight and so that is what really when you talk to his AIDS and his allies about what they're the most concerned about tonight is that that will resurrect itself on the debate stage because she is going to be trying to get under his skin I was at Trump Tower on Friday when he held a press conference just hours after appealing the egene Carol defamation and sexual abuse verdict he essentially just ranted about it for over 60 minutes and you could see what a sensitive issue it is for him basically making clear to the Harris campaign this is something that she could use that she could invoke to get under his skin and may very well do so tonight his campaign isn't quite sure how he'll respond to that coming up another take on what to expect tonight when California governor Gavin Nome joins us here in Philly it's all leading up to kamla Harris and Donald Trump in their historic Showdown you will see live on CNN in just minutes [Music] join me lar M as I introduce you to Africa's friend cers see how they Philadelphia is what you are looking at the spotlight is on that great City and the unprecedented Faceoff that is about to unfold between former president Donald Trump and vice president kamla Harris we are nearing the top of the hour when the debate gets underway vice president Harris just got a last minute message of encouragement from her husband second gentleman Doug mhof he posted on x k I can't wait for everyone to see you in action tonight you've got this and I've got you uh back now uh with uh the panel uh and I first want to start by going over to John King at at the magic wall John let's talk about how this debate figures into the battle for all the the important electoral votes Anderson this race is as competitive as can be which means the stakes tonight in this debate are as big as they could be i showing you the map right now you see the yellow those are the seven toss-up States plus Nebraska's second congressional district Nebraska like Maine Awards Electoral College votes based on congressional districts I could go through a number of scenarios here I'd be wasting your your time in the sense that these states are so close Donald Trump could win all those yellow States con Harris could win all those yellow States they could split all those yellow States so let me do it this way instead the way the map is right now look how evenly matched they are deep red solid Republican deep blue solid Democrat the lighter ones mean they're likely 225 to 219 right now the Battleground States will decide this Pennsylvania where they are tonight by the way the biggest prize 19 electoral votes right there and I will say these three states right here the so-called blue wall Pennsylvania Michigan Wisconsin they have voted together in every presidential election since 2000 so if that happens again that's an enormous Advantage let me do it this way instead of going through all the scenarios I could punch through States at a time it is quite conceivable that KLA Harris with a strong debate tonight and a strong finish could recreate this Joe Biden's victory in 2020 that is possible these states are so close those Battleground States remember them here and across here that that could happen but equally plausible is this uh Donald Trump recreating the map he had in 2016 that is why the stakes of this debate are so enormous as the two candidates go in so I'll go back to this map so it doesn't look like I'm taking siid we'll put up the 270 map here and we'll go through some of the Dynamics heading into the debate tonight to me this is the most critical one advantage Trump challenge for the vice president 76% of the American people forgive me if you're turning my back in the New York Times Sienna College poll over the weekend think the economy is in Fair or poor shape right now economic conditions today 76% say fair or poor and so then you ask them well who which candidate which candidate do you trust more when it comes to the economy and Donald Trump's Advantage here it's a lot of nostalgia I can tell you from my travels for the preco Trump economy people remember that right 55% say Donald Trump is better handle better able of these two candidates to handle the economy that's the vice president's biggest challenge tonight to narrow that Gap to narrow that Gap to make herself more plausible when it comes to the economy couple other quick things I just want to bring into play here this one is really interesting to me these candidates enter this debate essentially as equals not only in the polling but what the American people think of them 46% favor able 46% favorable 52% unfavorable 51% unfavorable again who can win this who can change Minds you should like me more you should be open to my positions more that's a huge challenge in the debate you're they're so competitive that it's not just policy it's what are people think of them as a person coming out of this debate it's incredibly important there let me move that out of the way I just want to show you one more thing this is it whether it's an advantage or whether it's a challenge uh I'll leave to the smart strategist at the table but people do know Donald Trump not that many people know much about any vice president this is not a criticism of KLA Harris do you need to know more about only 9% of likely voters say they need to know more about Donald Trump so whether you're voting for him whether you're against him whether you're still undecided you think you know him except for 9% of the American people there's an opportunity it's also a challenge nearly three and 10 Americans Anderson say we need to know more about her so she has a chance tonight to fill in that slate Donald Trump also has a course of course the chance to fill it in for her yeah chance to find her David as I know you have a question yeah well that that that uh graphic there is exactly why I said earlier that she needs to spend the preponderance of her time 70 80% talking to the American people about where she wants to lead uh and not getting sidetracked uh with Trump but John I just want to talk about the state where the debate is going on uh and why it is the focus of both campaigns take uh Pennsylvania out of the equation and then uh talk about what it would take to replace uh this one State oh if you want to get to 270 without Pennsylvania well good luck is the answer so let's take let's leave it let's just leave Pennsylvania as a tossup if you're let's start with vice president Harris can you get to 270 without Pennsylvania yes uh but you you know you'd have to win Michigan you'd have to win Wisconsin so then you're at 250 and so then what happens you could recreate what Joe Biden did right Joe Biden flipped Georgia hadn't gotone Democrat in a very long time Bill way back and then you come out to Arizona I hadn't got Democrat since Ross perau was on the bout you could do it that way the so-called Sun Belt strategy is doable to do it that way uh the question is you know these states are they going to stay were they flips or blips Nevada is the state where she's had trouble so you can see it you can do it without Pennsylvania the problem is that's 19 right so 19 the winner of those 19 gets a huge Advantage so let's flip it around the other way and come back here can Donald Trump get there without Pennsylvania well if you're not winning Pennsylvania are you winning Michigan and are you winning Wisconsin uh that's an interesting question right so can Trump do that and not win Pennsylvania North Carolina you won it the Obama campaign in 2008 historic African-American turnout it is in play the demographics say the Democrats should be able to compete there I will lean at Republican until proven otherwise right until proven otherwise it's available to KLA Harris but they have to do an enormously almost perfect job in turning out voters so can you get Trump if Trump wins Michigan and Wisconsin if if he's not winning Pennsylvania will he do that I mean a lot of people are going to say no but there you can get Trump there this way you get him right there you win North Carolina you win Georgia and you win those two now if if she wins the blue wall so take these off right let's just do this if the Democrats hold those Trump gets the Sun Belt Trump gets here this is where it gets really interesting if Trump holds Arizona 269 and 262 if Trump can win Nevada I'm not doing this to get people anxious it could come down to one congressional district Harris wins it she's president Trump wins it it goes to the house he's president because Republicans control the house now that scenario is most unlikely to happen I'm just telling you the race is that close right now that we have to look at it most of these states and Pennsylvania uh particular particularly are on a razor's edge here in terms of where this race is going and it gives you a sense of the stakes of this debate right but but again to go back to the other map I just want to show you this this we live in an every rule is made to be broken but we live in such a nationalized environment right now that this was race was close in 2016 and it broke for him this race was close in 2020 and it broke for Biden right and so will they all break together who knows there are different issues in different states the different the economy matters differently how how the economy matters inflation matters differently but we we have lived in a climate we're in a very nationalized climate the interesting part to me is can anybody do sort of a state byst state like they used to do it in the old days I don't see it which is why I think the state this debate is so important if someone comes out of this debate with momentum heading into the end it's huge just ending on your point about Pennsylvania by Leaps and Bounds tens of millions of dollars there's more ad spending going into the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania than any other Battleground State the campaigns know those 19 are critical David irvan yeah John not to be super de beat a horse here on Pennsylvania but is my home state we've talked about this before the counties of Erie and North Hampton I don't know if you're can get Gran more even more granular on your map there but of of those two counties what what do you think I know tonight Phils has some some voters in E's talking to what what do you see in those two counties and how do you see those breaking at this point I think that having Phill on the ground in Erie is critical tonight because as we talked about before you see Erie there going for Joe Biden with 50% you see Erie here going for Donald Trump let me bring up this just Erie County 48.6% 49 look how close it was 49 to 47 then you come back to 2020 you know 50 to 49 uh this is one of those swing counties Erie County there and then you come all the way over to the other side of the state and you come up here and you get to Northampton County up here again these are the swing counties like they're like this right they're like this so what is key there this is the key challenge I think for the vice president tonight in the sense that there are a lot of Voters more bluecar voters people who work with their hands in these places who remember the pre-trump co economy Democrats have had a problem with with bluecar voters High School educated voters can the vice president convince these people she's a better Steward for the economy she'll stress tonight we're told her middle class upbringing try to contrast I get the middle class I get struggle Donald Trump doesn't we'll see if that works but those look they are twice one by Obama then one by Trump then one by Biden they are the swing flip counties in America which is why you study them more closely than some of the others all right let's go to Jake and Philly thanks so much Anderson and joining us now here in Philadelphia is the Democratic governor of California Gavin Newsome uh Governor Nome thanks so much for joining us so at this point four years ago Joe Biden had a healthy lead in polls eight or nine points right now uh polls have Harris and Trump neck and neck if Donald Trump was such a disaster in the way you describe him why is it so close well we're divided country have got work to do we've got a grind inch by inch I think it was just reflected in those maps and the analysis we just heard no one's naive about that and I think the answer fundamentally is the inflation scars uh the experience that we've had globally not just in the United States and those things are real and that's why it's important for KLA Harris tonight to not only defend Joe Biden's record but to talk about how she'll be different to talk about her leadership and the capacity to paint a vision a compelling vision for the next four years and represent a new generation of leadership at the same time one of the things that she was hoping to do in the interview with Dana Bash was explain why she had changed her positions uh from 2019 to today especially on issues such as fracking which is important here in Pennsylvania uh but also on issues where she uh once expressed a more liberal point of view when it came to immigration such as for example uh whether or not crossing the border legally should be even considered a criminal act do you think she adequately explained why she has changed her position on those issues I'll leave I'll leave to more objective Minds than me but let me just say this what I do like is her objectivity and I do like her mind I think it's a mind of a leader someone who open argument someone's interested in evidence that's what leaders do they're not ideologues and so I think she expressed a point of view a few years ago uh she's evolved in that point of view and I think that should be complemented I think it same time uh should beg the question of the flip-flop flip as it relates to abortion of Donald Trump the flip on marijuana policy on Tik tock on the fact that Donald Trump himself campaigned to say reduced the national debt and increased it by $8.4 trillion so I think both candidates are subject to review of the rhetoric versus the record uh but I don't see it as a negative I honestly see uh Harris in the context of those issues as a positive and as a sign of a mature leader hey Governor it's Dana Bash uh you know as I'm hearing you talk I'm reminded of the fact that you went on Fox News to debate uh governor disantis and you are familiar with the arena of talking to people who don't always agree with you and that's a good example what do you think that kamla Harris needs to take from that point of view if anything as she's trying to re reach out to those who might not know her might maybe what they've heard about her that they don't really like or are they're just unsure of what's the key thing she needs to do well I I think it's both and I think she has incredible opportunity it's a gift to be on a stage like this uh and be able to introduce herself for those that don't own reintroduce herself for those that know a little bit about her I think she began to do that at the DNC talking about her own history uh that started a compain a compelling why and I think we all want to know why what's your motivation why do you seek this office the most powerful office uh on the land at the same time uh what is in it for me meaning are you focused on me you focus on my future are you focus on my tomorrows and again that's an opportunity to Pivot a bit uh from the Biden record the Biden Harris record uh and begin to paint that vision for the future so that's the and part that's the next part of the case she needs to prosecute tonight not just the case against Donald Trump and I expect she's going to make that case she will not be timid she is tough and she's going to bring it to Donald Trump but at the same time she's going to prosecute the case for a compelling vision for the future of this country country where people feel heard respected connected and protected Governor sour tells CNN that Hillary Clinton thinks that baiting Trump into self-destruction is one of the best things that she can do a do you agree with that and be you have been uh friends with kamla Harris since your days as uh young lawyers in San Francisco have you spoken to her as she is prep and have you given her any advice I don't I don't give advice I I take it uh but in in this context I've been very engaged with a campaign and the candidate and uh was just campaigning today with her husband uh that said uh one thing I know about uh comma Harris uh she is prepped she's ready uh and she will get under Donald Trump skin uh Donald Trump is so easily manipulated uh Hillary Clinton is exactly right uh I don't expect Trump will get under her skin I very very concerned if I was representing the Trump campaign with these two-minute answers two-minute response the one minute follow-up there's no chance in my mind after a few minutes in this debate uh that he doesn't fall prey to who he actually is he can't change his very nature and he will react and he will digress and with respect to Donald Trump I find him particularly derivative of himself uh he's increasingly boring uh there was an entertainment value to him a few even a few years ago that seems to have lost him uh he's lost lost it a little bit and so I expect that could come off as very borish tonight uh and I expect that to be a key the outcome of this of this debate uh and a very favorable light for KLA Harris Governor president Trump uh obviously says a lot about landish and just playing false things about elections and vote counting he recently said quote if Jesus Christ came down and was the vote counter I would win California unquote um what do you have to say to that he's unhinged um I mean that that no other serious person could say that and have been taken seriously and and he was serious about it he actually believes this that's how how delusional he is uh the fact that he thinks he's strength he's weakness masquerading as strength he's a broken person and he's always tried to overcompensate for that uh I mean and so look I think what we're going to see tonight if we see a lot more of that this pity party this victimization oh poor Donald Trump uh he loses this debate particularly again if she can make the case for you and me and the people watching if she's talking about us and he's talking about his grievances that somehow now he even won California uh this is a this debate she wins walking away Governor gav Newsome of the great state of California thank you so much appreciate your time Anderson Jake thanks very much we are less than 14 minutes away from this debate one of the the most consequential debates uh probably in any presidential race certainly in in my lifetime man I I'm I'm proud of comla Harris uh I voted for KLA Harris when she was a district attorney I voted for her when she was attorney general I voted for her for vice president I'm going to vote for her for president and I think we should just take a minute she doesn't like to talk about the history uh she doesn't want to go there but I don't mind going there this is a black woman uh an indianamerican woman who is going to be standing next to Donald Trump it's down at two it's down at two one of these people is going to be our president this time next year uh and I'm excited to see what she does and I and I think if she everything that Gavin said is true uh this guy is losing it the the the Fizz is coming out of the soda with Donald Trump it's time to turn the page you're gonna do it tonight I I don't want to hype this up but I mean it is just extraordinary I me we were all together uh at that last debate by the way you said that the last debate I know but and it was true you know we were all thinking oh this is a really going to be a really consequential debate but we had no idea I was but we had no idea just how what was going to happen on that stage and in truth we there's no telling what is going to happen in 13 minutes well you're dealing with a wildly unpredictable actor in Donald Trump he's the exactor I don't think that we expect KLA Harris is in any way going to majorly go off the rails I think she's largely going to stick to what she rehearsed but this is also a historic night for other reasons I hope this isn't what she litigates tonight strategically but this is a man who refused to concede an election tried to steal an election is has many felony counts against him has pending trials and he is eight weeks away from potentially being president-elect of the United States that's also a historic context that lingers it will be interesting though if you know you said she's going to stick with what she rehearsed and should not go off the rails you know we uh we talked to her after the last debate and you know it became slightly contentious and she got annoyed and she did go off script and was far more great than she was when she was on script and and it'd be curious to see who shows up tonight and whether there are those moments where it's clearly she's exasperated and she responds I don't think she's likely to go off the rails I mean but to me that's not the issue for her it's two words plausibility and responsibility you know Trump's been the president so he's plausible in this office for most viewers well I don't know I mean let's not that's a big leap at least for Scott not but she's she's the vice president and people have to believe that you to describe people so we say go off the rails go off the rails for KLA Harris means something totally different than go off the roads for Donald Trump and I think we should just be mindful about that application of different types of candidates what I know is that nobody can predict what is going to happen but tonight there are probably people who are going to watch the television screen and see something that they never thought was possible in their life and I just want to say when one of the candidates on there many of us feel like are constantly undermining our democracy which debate free speech is part of it this if you want this in the future you might want to take it beting to see who looks like the most responsible person on that state we're getting an update on what Donald Trump has been doing in these final minutes before the debate I quickly want to go to Christen homes what are you learning yeah Anderson just a few moments ago Donald Trump was FaceTiming into what they have set up as a social media war room that is here in Philadelphia and is made up of some conservative influencers who have the most followers in the country that's millions of people online now this shows you the effort they're making tonight might not necessarily be to reach independent or moderate voters but instead to have these conservative sometimes in cases far right influencers reaching out to their core bases not necessarily people who normally head to the polls in November and feeding them information about the debate remember a lot of the people that Donald Trump is now courting aren't people who normally get their news on politics or engage in politics in a direct way so it is clear now part of this strategy is playing out on social media so just moments ago he was FaceTiming into that room telling them good luck and saying that he was happy they were there to support him all right uh David I mean again you've been in this in in these rooms back at these debates uh with 10 minutes to go nine minutes to go does is a candidate looking at notes there were I talked to Doris K's Goodwin the other day she was talking about JFK on the day of the debate you know sitting on his bed looking at 3x5 cards yeah like in that second debate I talked about in 2012 President Obama had outlined in on two uh one page reversed uh his outline for 14 answers to the 14 most likely questions he was going to get he had in his mind how they were going to play out and he reviewed that uh for the day before were they were those questions asked yeah and I mean you always have to improvise a little because it doesn't always it doesn't come down the way you exactly plan but he you know if you prepare properly your team knows how you're going to handle given situations and we were comfortable in that debate that we did and he did briefly can we bring it back to a Christ's reporting that is very important and you and I were talking about it earlier who is his focus in the final moments it that social media sphere of the Mana sphere like the sort of right-wing magga Warriors online who are doing the work to compete with the Kamala Harris social media presence the fact that that's where he's spending his effort tells us who he wants to speak to tonight the point is amplification that's the point of social media is amplification but because of our silos it's going to be directed to certain communities and he's already doing extremely well with white men with non- col degrees and I think tonight we're going to hear Donald Trump who is still focused on certain communities Jake let's go back to you thanks Anderson let's talk about kamla Harris's strengths and weaknesses uh as a debater she certainly doesn't have as much experience at this level uh she participated Chris and Abby in the 2019 uh debates uh running for the Democratic nomination uh had some strong moments uh but but what do you think are her strengths and weaknesses well I think that when she is prepared and on offense she's very good and everybody remembers the 2019 takedown of of uh Joe Biden on the issue of busing and I am that little girl who was the second class to desegregate a school in California she is less Adept when she's on defense and she's being presented with a new situation and people talk about in 2019 when tulsey gabard went after her about her record uh as a prosecutor in in San Francisco and put a lot of people in jail for smoking pot so we we know that when she's prepared she's good when she's not and taken by surprise and Donald Trump is a very very good at throwing a curveball at you yeah I think that's exactly right I mean she is a a a huge preparer I mean people who work for her say she she spends so much time sort of digging into uh the the sort of planning leading up to a debate that's what she did a lot in the 2020 election cycle and what she's been doing in Pittsburgh basically a boot camp of sorts with her AIDS uh but the the challenge for her is that Trump is an unpredictable person and she has to have the ability to think on her feet she's best when she's prepared and she's planned for a moment but when something unusual comes up she's going to have to respond I think that's going to be the biggest challenge I also remember sitting you know on the set in the last debate that you all were moderating and there's a degree of humility that I know I'm going into this debate with which is that uh we really don't you know I think the expectations are kind of neutral for me right now we don't know what to expect and and these candidates um depending on what's going on in their lives at any given moment can show up in all kinds of ways on that debate stage we'll just have to wait and see we've been out of the prediction business for some time particularly after after the last debate um but I also think we should we should note that this is not a far in the- future thing that's happening tonight next week Wisconsin is going to start to vote they can start their mail in votes North Carolina was supposed to start this week but the um there was a a legal dispute with RFK Jr being on the ballot so that has been delayed but this is going to be directed at voters who are not yet sure what they're going to do and will be able to start voting so soon can I say one thing that I'm watching for tonight that we haven't talked about is Project 2025 because what we saw in that New York Times Sienna College poll that came out on Sunday is that the attacks by democrats and by vice president Harris specifically to tie Trump to it have been effective despite Trump saying he has nothing to do with it which the founder who stepped down of project 2025 told me last night though he did concede he's been to Mara Lago he's met Trump's campaign manager Susie WS the polling shows that that 34 of Voters know about project 2025 and the majority of those who do know about it are opposed to the policies that are included in it and so they are intrinsically linking it with Donald Trump Donald Trump I am told is prepared to talk about that tonight they are expecting vice president Harris to bring it up like she's been bringing it up on the campaign Trail but it's been something that a year ago none of us were talking about despite the fact that it's been about 2 years into the making and it is something that Democrat have been able to use and that has really frustrated the Trump campaign so let's just talk about for one second the moment that we're in because we're literally just minutes away from I mean the the debate with Joe Biden uh was I think it's fair to say because of President Biden's performance the most consequential debate in history that scared Democratic operatives and Democratic office holders and Democratic activists so much that he in an unprecedented fashion steep down uh now we have this a new unprecedented match up between Harris uh and uh and Trump and and we have no idea what's going to happen and it could very well end up just as consequential well I'm I'm going to make a very deep analysis and say that they're about to walk out on the stage and one of the first things we're going to notice is the difference in size Donald Trump is literally almost a foot taller than kamla Harris and it'll be interesting to see whether Trump takes advantage of that and goes over to shake her hand I remember back in 1988 when Michael dakus which about a half a foot shorter than George HW Bush uh they went over and a lot of people thought that bush held on to dukas's hand a little bit longer to emphasize I'm bigger than you and dakus had had like a pitcher mound set up behind the podium that he climbed up on now they don't have that here but if you look at those two podiums but also smaller than his is so she's much younger than him that's going to be the other contrast I me the last time he and Joe Biden obviously were not that far apart there's a huge she's about 20 almost 20 years younger but the other thing I mean sorry Dana I I actually was going to direct this at you because I I think that we as we've covered you know the Hillary clintons of the world I mean there's a psychology about being a female candidate in a moment like this about how comfortable you want to feel on the stage how How firm you want to be in these moments navigating that has been I think some of the work that she's been doing in debate prep is thinking through what does she want to present herself like on that stage and and perhaps she's talked to Hillary Clinton we know that already this past week but perhaps one of the things that that previous female candidates have told her is not to overthink some of that stuff because I think Hillary did some of that back in 2016 yes you just have to do I mean if you look at the way she presented herself at the convention I'm told that is what she's going to try to do just look like a commander-in-chief be in command be confident and try not to let him rattle her I will just say we are going to be doing some comment on CNN.com so you're going to be able to hear what we're all saying while this is going on or read it I should say on CNN.com that's right and that's coming up in one second and stay right here to see every moment of this historic presidential debate live on CNN our debate continue coverage continues right now [Music] [Applause] [Music] we are less than a minute away from the main event in Philadelphia tonight the unprecedented debate between vice president KLA Harris and former president Donald Trump the candidates inside the national Constitution Center right now getting ready to take their places on stage I'm Anderson Cooper this is CN special coverage of debate night in America and I'm Jake Tapper in the great city of Philadelphia former president Trump and current vice president Harris are about to meet face to face for the very first time time both candidates are hoping to take advantage of this extraordinary moment that may be their best chance to influence undecided voters before election day CNN's live coverage of the ABC News presidential debate begins coming up right now tonight the high stake Showdown here in Philadelphia between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump their first face-to-face meeting in this presidential election their first face face to- face meeting ever a historic race for president upended just weeks ago President Biden withdrawing after his last debate Donald Trump now up against a new opponent the candidates separated by the smallest of margins essentially tied in the polls nationally and in the key Battlegrounds including right here in Pennsylvania all still very much in play the ABC News presidential debate starts right now this is an ABC News special the most consequential moment of this campaign kamla Harris we will chart a new way forward Donald Trump we will soon be a great nation again face to face historic the ABC News presidential debate here now David M and Lindsay Davis good evening I'm David mure and thank you for joining us for tonight's ABC News presidential debate we want to welcome viewers watching on ABC and around the world tonight vice president president KLA Harris I'm lindsy Davis tonight's meeting could be the most consequential event of their campaigns with election day now less than two months away for vice president kamla Harris this is her first debate since President Biden withdrew from the race on July 21st of course that decision followed his debate against President Donald Trump in June since then this race has taken on an entirely new Dynamic and that brings us to the rules of tonight's debate 90 minutes with two commercial breaks no topics or questions have been shared with the campaigns the candidates will will have 2 minutes to answer questions and this is the clock that's what they'll be seeing 2 minutes for rebuttal and 1 minute for follow-ups clarifications or responses their microphones will only be turned on when it's their turn to speak no pre-written notes allowed there is no audience here tonight in this Hall at the national Constitution Center this is an intimate setting for two candidates who have never met president Trump won the coin toss he chose to deliver the final closing statement of the evening vice president Harris selected the podium to the right so let's now welcome the candidates to the stage vice president kamla Harris and president Donald Trump K Harris Let's Have a good debate to see you have fun thank you welcome to you both it's wonderful to have you it's an honor to have you both here tonight good evening we are looking forward to a spirited and thoughtful debate so let's get started I want to begin tonight with the issue that voters repeatedly say is their number one issue and that is the economy and the cost of living in this country vice president Harris you and president Trump were elected four years ago and your opponent on the stage here tonight often asks his supporters are you better off than you were four years ago when it comes to the economy do you believe Americans are better off than they were four years ago so I was raised as a middle- class kid and I am actually the only person on this stage who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle class and working people of America I believe in the Ambitions the aspirations the dreams of the American people and that is why I imagine and have actually a plan to build what I call an opportunity economy because here's the thing we know that we have a a shortage of of homes and housing and the cost of housing is too expensive for far too many people we know that young families need support to raise their children and I intend on extending a tax cut for those families of $6,000 which is the largest child tax credit that we have given in a long time so that those young families can afford to buy a crib buy a car seat buy clothes for their children my passion one of them is small businesses I was actually my mother raised my sister and me but there was a woman who helped raise us we call her our second mother she was a small business owner I love our small businesses my plan is to give a $50,000 tax deduction to Startup small businesses knowing they are part of the backbone of America's economy my opponent on the other hand his plan is to do what he has done before which is to provide a tax cut for billionaires and big corporations which will result in5 trillion dollar to America's deficit my opponent has a plan that I call the Trump's sales tax which would be a 20% tax on everyday Goods that you rely on to get through the month economists have said that that Trump sales tax would actually result for middle class families in about $44,000 more a year because of his policies and his ideas about what should be the backs of middleclass people paying for tax cuts for billionaires president Trump I'll give you two minutes first of all I have no sales tax that's an incorrect statement she knows that uh we're doing tariffs on other countries other countries are going to finally after 75 years pay us back for all that we've done for the world and the Tariff will be substantial in some cases I took in billions and billions of dollars as you know from China in fact they never took the Tariff off because it was so much money they can't it would totally destroy everything that they've set out to do they're taking in billions of dollars from China and other places they've left the tariffs on when I had it I had tariffs and yet I had no inflation uh look we've had a terrible economy because inflation has which is really known as a country Buster it breaks up countries we have inflation like very few people have ever seen before probably the worst in our nation's history we were at 21% but that's being generous because many things are 50 60 70 and 80% higher than they were just a few years ago this has been a disaster for people for the middle class but for every class on top of that we have millions of people pouring into our country from prisons and jails from mental institutions and insane asylums and they're coming in and they're taking job jobs that are occupied right now by African-Americans and Hispanics and also unions unions are going to be affected very soon and you see what's happening you see what's happening with towns throughout the United States you look at Springfield Ohio you look at Aurora in Colorado they are taking over the towns they're taking over buildings they're going in violently these are the people that she and Biden led into our country and they're destroying our country they're dangerous they're at the highest level of criminality and we have to get them out we have to get them out fast I created one of the greatest economies in the history of our country I'll do it again and even better we are going to get to immigration and border security during this debate but uh I would like to let vice president Harris respond on the economy here well I would love to let's talk about what Donald Trump left us Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression Donald Trump left us the worst Public Health Donald Trump left us the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War and what we have done is clean up Donald Trump's mess what we have done and what I intend to do is build on what we know are the aspirations and the hopes of the American people but I'm going to tell youall in this debate tonight you're going to hear from the same old tired Playbook a bunch of Lies Grievances and name calling what you're going to hear tonight is a detailed and dangerous Plan called project 2025 that the former president intends on implementing if he were elected to again I believe very strongly that the American people want a president who understands the importance of bringing us together know we have so much more in common than what separates us and I pledge to you to be a president for all Americans president Trump I'll give you a minute here to respond number one I have nothing to do as you know and as she knows better than anyone I have nothing to do with project 2025 uh that's out there I haven't read it I don't want to read it purposly I'm not going to read it this was a group of people that got together they came up with some ideas I guess some good some bad but it makes no difference I have nothing to do everybody knows I'm an open book everybody knows what I'm going to do cut taxes very substantially and create a great economy like I did before we had the greatest economy we got hit with a pandemic and the pandemic was not since 19 17 where 100 million people died has there been anything like it we did a phenomenal job with the pandemic we handed them over a country where the economy and where the stock market was higher than it was before the pandemic came in nobody's ever seen anything like it we made ventilators for the entire world we got gowns we got masks we did things that nobody thought possible and people give me credit for rebuilding the military they give me credit for a lot of things but not enough credit for the great job we did with the p pmic but the only jobs they got were bounceback jobs these were jobs bounceback and it bounced back and it went to their benefit but I was the one that created them they know it and so does everybody else vice president Harris I'll let you respond so Donald Trump has no plan for you and when you look at his economic plan it's all about tax breaks for the richest people I am offering what I describe as an opportunity economy and the best Economist in our country if not the world have reviewed our relative plans for the future of America what Goldman Sachs has said is that Donald Trump's plan would make the economy worse mine would strengthen the economy what the Wharton School has said is Donald Trump's plan would actually explode the deficit 16 Nobel laurates have described his economic plan as something that would increase inflation and by the middle of next year would invite a recession you just have to look at where we are and where we stand on the issues and I'd invite you to know that Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you that's just a sound but they gave her that to say look I went to the Wharton School of finance and many of those professors the top professors think my plan is a brilliant plan it's a great plan it's a plan that's going to bring up our our worth our value as a country it's going to make people want to be able to go and work and uh create jobs and create a lot of good solid money for our for our country and just to finish off uh she doesn't have a plan she copied Biden's plan and it's like four sentences like Run Spot Run four sentences that are just oh we'll try and lower taxes she doesn't have a plan take a look at her plan she doesn't have a plan Mr President I do want to drill down on something you both brought up uh the vice president brought up uh your tariffs you responded and let's drill down on this because your plan is what she calls is essentially a national sales tax your proposal calls for tariffs as you pointed out here on Foreign imports across the board you recently said that you might double your plan imposing tariffs up to 20% on Goods coming into this country as you know many economists say that with tariffs at that level costs are then passed on to the consumer vice president Harris has argued it'll mean higher prices on gas food clothing medication arguing it costs the typical family nearly $4,000 a year do you believe Americans can afford higher prices because of tariffs they're not going to have higher prices what's going to have and who's going to have higher prices is China and all of the countries that have been ripping us off for years I charged I was the only president ever China was paying us hundreds of billions of dollars and so were other countries and you know if she doesn't like them they should have gone out and they should have immediately cut the tariffs but those tariffs are there three and a half years now under their Administration we are going to take in billions of dollars hundreds of billions of dollars I had no inflation virtually no inflation they had the highest inflation perhaps in the history of our country because I've never seen a worse period of time people can't go out and buy cereal or bacon or eggs or anything else these the people of our country are absolutely dying with what they've done they've destroyed the economy and all you have to do is look at a poll the polls say 80 and 885 even 90% that the Trump economy was great that their economy was terrible vice president Harris I do want to ask for your response and you heard what the president said there because the Biden Administration did keep a number of the Trump tariffs in place so how do you respond well let's be clear that the Trump Administration resulted in a trade deficit one of the highest we've ever seen in the history of America he invited trade Wars you want to talk about his deal with China what he ended up doing is under Donald Trump's president he ended up selling American chips to China to help them improve and modernize their military basically sold us out when a policy about China should be in making sure the United States of America wins the competition for the 21st century which means focusing on the details of what that requires focusing on relationships with our allies focusing on investing in american-based technology so that we win the race on AI on Quantum Computing focusing on what we need to do to support America's Workforce so that we don't end up having the on the short end of the stick in terms of workers rights but what Donald Trump did let's talk about this with covid is he actually thanked president XI for what he did during Co look at his tweet thank you president she exclamation point when we know that she was responsible for lacking and not giving us transparency about the origins of covid President Trump I'll let you respond first of all they bought their chips from Taiwan we hardly make chips anymore because of uh philosophies like they have and policies like they have I don't say her because she has no policy everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out the window she's going to My Philosophy now in fact I was going to send her a Maga hat she's gone to My Philosophy but if she ever got elected she'd change it and it will be the end of our country she's a Marxist everybody knows she's a Marxist her father's a Marxist professor in economics and he taught her well but when you look at what she's done to our country and when you look at these millions and millions of people that are pouring into our country monthly where it's I believe 21 million people not the 15 that people say and I think it's a lot higher than the 21 that's bigger than New York State pouring in and just look at what they're doing to our country they're criminals many of these people coming in are criminals and that's bad for our economy too you know you mentioned before we'll talk about immigration later well bad immigration is the worst thing that can happen to our economy they have and she has destroyed our country with policy that's insane almost policy that you'd say they have to hate our country president Trump thank you Lindsay I want to turn to the issue of abortion president Trump you've often touted that you were able to kill roie Wade last year you said that you were proud to be the most pro-life president in American history then last month you said that your Administration would be great for women and their Reproductive Rights in your home state of Florida you surprised many uh with regard to your six-week abortion ban because you initially had said that it was too short and you said quote I'm going to be voting that we need more than six weeks but then the very next day you reversed course and said you would vote to support the six-week ban vice president Harris says that women should didn't trust you on the issue of of abortion because you've changed your position so many times therefore why should they trust you well the reason I'm doing that vote is because the plan is as you know the vote is they have abortion in the ninth month they even have and you can look at the governor of West Virginia the previous governor of West Virginia not the current governor is doing an excellent job but the governor before he said the baby will be born and we will decide what to do with the baby in other words we'll execute with the baby and that's why I did that because that predominates because they're radical the Democrats are radical in that and her vice presidential pick which I think is a horrible pick by the way for our country because he is really out of it but her vice presidential pick says abortion in the n9th month is absolutely fine he also says execution after birth it's execution no longer abortion because the baby is born is okay and that's not okay with me hence the vote but what I did is something for 52 years they've been trying to get roie wade into the states and through the uh genius and and heart and strength of six Supreme Court Justices we were able to do that now I believe in the exceptions for rape incest and life of the mother I believe strongly in it Ronald Reagan did also 85% of Republicans do exceptions very important but we were able to get it and now states are voting on it and for the first time you're going to see look this is an issue that's torn our country apart for 52 years every legal scholar every Democrat every Republican liberal conservative they all wanted this issue to be brought back to the states where the people could vote and that's what happened happened now Ohio the vote was somewhat Liberal Kansas the vote was somewhat liberal much more liberal than people would have thought but each each individual state is voting it's the vote of the people now it's not tied up in the federal government I did a great service in doing it it took courage to do it and the Supreme Court had great courage in doing it and I give tremendous credit to those six justices there is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it's born Madam vice president want to get your response to president Trump well as I said you're going to hear a bunch of lies and that's not actually a surprising fact let's understand how we got here Donald Trump hand selected three members of the United States Supreme Court with the intention that they would undo the protections of roie Wade and they did exactly as he intended and now in over 20 states there are Trump abortion bans which make it criminal for a doctor or nurse to provide Health Care in one state it provides prison for life Trump abortion bans that make no exception even for rape and incest which understand what that means a survivor of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body next that is immoral and one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body I have talked with women around our country you want to talk about this is what what people wanted pregnant women who want to carry a pregnancy to term suffering from a miscarriage being denied care in an emergency room because the health care providers are afraid they might go to jail and she's bleeding out in a car in the parking lot she didn't want that her husband didn't want that a 12 or 13-year-old Survivor of incest being forced to carry a pregnancy to term they don't want that and I pledge to you when Congress passes a bill to put back in place the protections of roie Wade as president of the United States I will proudly sign it into law but understand if Donald Trump were to be reelected he will sign a National Abortion ban understand in his project 2025 there would be a National Abortion a monitor that would be monitoring your pregnanes your miscarriages I think the American people believe that certain freedom in particular the freedom to make decisions about one's own body should not be made by the government thank you vice president Harris well there she goes again it's a lie I'm not signing a ban and there's no reason to sign a ban because we've gotten what everybody wanted Democrats Republicans and everybody else and every legal scholar wanted it to be brought back into the states and the states are voting and it may take a little time but for 52 years this issue has torn our country apart and they've wanted it back in the States and I did something that nobody thought was possible the states are now voting what she says is an absolute lie and as far as the abortion B no I'm not in favor of abortion ban but it doesn't matter because this issue has now been taken over by the states would you veto a National Abortion ban if it well I won't have to because again two things number one she said she'll go back to Congress she'll never get the vote impossible for her to get the vote especially now with the 5050 and essentially 50/50 in both Senate and the house she's not going to get the vote she can't get the vote she won't even come close to it so it's just talk you know what it reminds me of when they said they're going to get student loans terminated and it ended up being a total catastrophe the student loans and then her I I think probably her boss if you call him a boss he spends all his time on the beach but look her boss went out and said we'll do it again we'll do it a different way and he went out got rejected Again by the Supreme Court so all these students got taunted with this whole thing about this whole idea and how unfair that would have been part of the reason they lost to the millions and millions of people that had to pay off their student loans they didn't get it for free but they were saying it's the same way that they talked about that that they talk about abortion but if I could just get a yes or no because your running mate Jen JD Vance has said that you would veto if you did come to your desk well I didn't discuss it with JD in all fairness uh JD and I I don't mind if he has a certain view but I think he was speaking for me but I really didn't look we don't have to discuss it because she'd never be able to get it just like she couldn't get student loans they couldn't get student loans they didn't even come close to getting student loans they taunted young people and a lot of other people that had loans they can never get this approved so it doesn't matter what she says about going to Congress so wonderful let's go to Congress do it but the fact is that for years they wanted to get it out of Congress and out of the federal government and we did something that everybody said couldn't be done and now you have a vote of the people on abortion vice president Harris want to give you your time to respond but I do want to ask would you support any restrictions on a woman's right to an abortion I absolutely support reinstating the protections of roie Wade and as you rightly mentioned nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and an an asking for an abortion that is not happening it's insulting to the women of America and understand what has been happening under Donald Trump's abortion bans couples who pray and and and and dream of having a family are being denied IVF treatments what is happening in our country working people working women who are working one or two jobs who can barely afford child care as it is have to travel to another state to get on a plane sitting next to strangers to go and get the health care she needs barely can afford to do it and what you are putting her through is unconscionable and the people of America have not the majority of Americans believe in a woman's right to make decisions about her own body and that is why in every state where this issue has been on the ballot in red and blue States both the people of America have voted for Freedom vice president excuse me I have to respond another lie it's another lie I have been a leader on IVF which which is fertilization the IVF I have been a leader in fact when they got a very negative decision on IVF from the Alabama courts I saw the people of Alabama and the legislature two days later voted it in I've been a leader on it they know that and everybody else knows it I have been a leader on fertilization IVF and the other thing they not you should ask will she allow abortion in the eighth month ninth month seventh month come on okay would you do that why don't you ask her that question why don't you the because under roie question you could do abortions in the seventh month the eth month the ninth month and probably after birth just look at the governor former governor of Virginia the governor of Virginia said we put the baby aside and then we we determine what we want to do with the baby president Trump thank you we're going to turn now to immigration and border security we know it's an issue that's important to Republicans Democrats voters across the board uh in this country vice president Harris you were tasked by President Biden with getting to the root causes of migration from Central America we know that illegal border crossings reached a record high in the Biden Administration this past June President Biden imposed tough new Asylum restrictions we know the numbers since then have dropped significantly but my question to you tonight is why did the administration wait until 6 months before the election to act and would you have done anything differently from President Biden on this so I'm the only person on this stage who has prosecuted transnational criminal organizations for the trafficking of guns drugs and human beings and let me say that the United States Congress including some of the most conservative members of the United States Senate came up with a border security bill which I supported and that bill would have put 15 UND more border agents On the Border to help those folks who are working there right now overtime trying to do their job it would have allowed us to stem the flow of fentol coming into the United States I know there are so many families watching tonight who have been personally affected by The Surge of fentanyl in our country that bill would have put more resources to allow us to prosecute transnational criminal organizations for trafficking in guns drugs and human beings but you know what happened to that bill Donald Trump got on the phone called up some folks in Congress and said kill the bill and you know why because he'd prefer to run on a problem instead of fixing a problem and understand this comes at a time where the people of our country actually need a leader who engages in Solutions who actually addresses the problems at hand but what we have in the former president is someone who would prefer to run on a problem and instead of fixing a problem and I'll tell you something he's going to talk about immigration a lot tonight even when it's not the subject that is being raised and I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies because it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you you will not hear him talk about your needs your dreams and your need and your desires and I'll tell you I believe you deserve a president who actually puts you first and I pledge to you that I will vice president Harris thank you president Trump on that point I want to get your response like to respond let me just ask though why did you try to kill that bill and successfully so that would have put thousands of additional agents and officers On the Border first let me respond as to the rallies she said people start leaving people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go and the people that do go she's busting them in and paying them to be there and then showing them in a different light so she can't talk about that people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics that's because people want to take their country back our country is being lost we're a failing nation and it happened three and a half years ago and what what's going on here you're going to end up in World War II just to go into another the subject what they have done to our country by allowing these millions and millions of people to come into our country and look at what's happening to the towns all over the United States and a lot of towns don't want to talk not going to be Aurora or Springfield a lot of towns don't want to talk about it because they're so embarrassed by it in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what's happening in our country and it's a shame as far as rallies are concerned as far as the reason they go is they like what I say they want to bring our country back they want to make America great again it's very simple phrase make America great again she's destroying this country and if she becomes president this country doesn't have a chance of success not only success will end up being Venezuela on steroids I just want to clarify here you bring up Springfield Ohio and ABC News did reach out to the city manager there uh he told us there have been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed injured or abused by individuals within the Immigrant Community I've seen people on television let me just say here this is the people on television say my dog was taken and used for food so maybe he said that and maybe that's a good thing to say for a city manager I'm not taking this from telis people T their dog was eaten by the people that went there again the Springfield City manager says there no evidence of that vice president haris I'll let you respond to the rest of what you've heard you talk about extreme um you know I this is I think one of the reasons why in this election I actually have the endorsement of 200 Republicans who have forly worked with President Bush Mitt Romney and John McCain including the endorsement of former Vice President Dick Cheney and Congress member Liz Cheney and and if you want to really know the inside track on who the former president is if he didn't make it clear already just ask people who have worked with him his former a fourstar general has said he has contempt for the Constitution of the United States his former National Security adviser has said he is dangerous and unfit his former Secretary of Defense has said the nation the Republic would never survive another Trump ter term and when we listen to this kind of rhetoric when the issues that affect the American people are not being addressed I think the choice is clear in this election President Trump I'll give you a quick minute to respond uh thank you because when I hear that see I'm a different kind of a person I fired most of those people not so graciously they did bad things or a bad job I fired them they never fired one person they didn't fire anybody having to do with Afghanistan and the Taliban and the 13 people who's who's were just killed viciously and violently killed and I got to know the parents and the family they didn't fire they should have fired all those generals all those top people because that was one of the most incompetently handled situations anybody has ever seen so when somebody does a bad job I fire them and you take a guy like esper he was no good I fired him so he writes a book another one writes a book because with me they can write books with nobody else can they but they have done such a poor job and they never fire anybody look at the economy look how look at the inflation they didn't fire any of their economists they have the same people that's a good way not to have books written about you but just to finish I got more votes than any Republican in history by far in fact I got more votes than any president sitting president in history by far let me continue on immigration it was what you wanted to talk about earlier so let's get back to your deportation uh proposal that the vice president has reacted to as well president Trump you call this the largest domestic deportation operation in the history of our country you say you would use the National Guard you say if things get out of control you'd have no problem using the US military you also said you would use local police uh how would you uh Deport 11 million undocumented immigrants I know you you believe that number is much higher take us through this what does this look like will authorities be going door in this country yeah it is much higher because of them they allowed criminals many many millions of criminals they allowed terrorists they allowed Common Street criminals they allowed people to come in drug dealers to come into our country and then now in the United States and told by their countries like Venezuela don't ever come back or we're going to kill you do you know that crime in Venezuela and crime in countries all over the world is way down you know why because they've taken their criminals off the street and they've given them to her to put into our country and this will be one of the greatest mistakes in history for them to allow and I think they probably did it because they think they're going to get votes but it's not worth it because they're they're destroying the fabric of our country by what they've done there's never been anything done like this at all they've destroyed the fabric of our country millions of people let in and all over the world crime is down all over the world except here crime here is up and through the roof despite their fraudulent statements that they made crime in this country is through the roof and we have a new form of crime it's called migrant crime and it's happening at levels that nobody thought possible president Trump as you know the FBI says overall violent crime is actually coming down in this country but excuse me the FBI defraud they were defrauding statements they they didn't include the worst cities they didn't include the cities with the worst crime it was a a fraud just like their number of 88,000 jobs that they said they created turned out to be a fraud president Trump thank you I'll let you respond vice president Harris well I think this is so rich coming from someone who has been prosecuted for National Security crimes economic crimes election interference has been found liable for sexual assault and his next big court appearance is in November at his own criminal sentencing and let let's be clear where each person stands on the issue of what is important about respect for the rule of law and respect for law enforcement the former vice president called for defunding federal law enforcement 45,000 agents get this on the day after he was arraigned on 34 felony counts so let's talk about what is important in this race it is important that we move forward that we turn the page on on this same old tired rhetoric and address the needs of the American people address what we need to do about the housing shortage which I have a plan for address what we must do to support our small businesses address Bringing Down the price of groceries but frankly the American people are exhausted with this same old tired Playbook vice president Harris thank you excuse me every one of those cases was started by them against their political opponent and I'm winning most of them and I will win the rest on appeal and you saw that with the decision that came down just recently from the Supreme Court I'm winning most of them but those are cases it's called weaponization never happened in this country they weaponized the justice department every one of those cases was involved with the doj from Atlanta and fny Willis to to the uh Attorney General of New York and the da of New York every one of those cases and then they say oh he was he's a criminal they're the ones that made them go after me by the way Joe Biden was found essentially guilty on the documents case and what happened in my documents case they said oh that's the toughest of them all a complete and total Victory two months ago it was thrown out it's weaponization and they used it and it's never happened in this country they used it to try and win an election fake cases president Trump thank you a really quick response here vice president Harris on this notion of weapon ization of the justice department and understand the context in which this election in 2024 is taking place the United States Supreme Court recently ruled that the former president would essentially be immune from any misconduct if he were to enter the White House again understand this is someone who has openly said he would terminate I'm quoting terminate the Constitution of the United States that he would weaponize the Department of Justice against his political enemies someone who has openly expressed disdain for members of our military understand what it would mean if Donald Trump were back in the white house with no guard rails because certainly we know now the court won't stop him we know JD Vance is not going to stop him it's up to the American people vice president thank you Lindsay vice president Harris in your last run for president weaponized please this is the one that weaponized not me she weaponized I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me they talk about democracy I'm a threat to democracy they're the threat to democracy with a fake Russia Russia Russia investigation that went nowhere we have a lot to get to Lindsay vice president Harris in your last run for president you said you wanted to ban fracking now you don't you wanted mandatory government buback programs for assault weapons now your campaign says you don't you supported decriminalizing border crossing now you're taking a harder line I know you say that your values have not changed so then why have so many of your policy positions changed so my values have not changed and I'm going to discuss every one of the at least every point that you've made but in particular let's talk about fracking because we're here in Pennsylvania I made that very clear in 2020 I will not ban fracking I have not banned fracking as vice president of United States and in fact I Was the tiebreaking vote on the inflation reduction act which opened new leases is for fracking my position is that we have got to invest in diverse sources of energy so we reduce our Reliance on foreign oil we have had the largest increase in domestic oil production in history because of an approach that recognizes that we cannot over rely on foreign oil as it relates to my values let me tell you I grew up a middle class kid raised by a hardworking mother who worked and saved and was able to buy our first home when I was a teenager the values I bring to the importance of home ownership knowing not everybody got handed $400 million on a silver platter and then filed bankruptcy six times is a value that I bring to my work to say we are going to work with the private sector and home builders to increase 3 million homes increased by 3 million homes by the end of my first term my work that is related to stepfather and my focus then on protecting women and children from violent crime is based on a value that is deeply grounded in the importance of standing up for those who are most vulnerable my work that is about protecting Social Security and Medicare is based on longstanding work that I have done protecting seniors from scams my values have not changed and what is important is that there is a president who actually brings values and a perspective that is about lifting people up and not beating people down and name calling the true measure of the leader is the leader who actually understands the strength is not in beating people down it's in lifting people up I intend to be that president president Trump your resp well first of all I wasn't given $400 million I wish I was my father was a Brooklyn Builder Brooklyn Queens and a great father and I learned a lot from him but I was given a fraction of that tiny fraction and have built it into many many billions of dollars many many billions and when people see it they are even surprised so we don't have to talk about that fracking she's been against it for 12 years uh defund the police she's been against that forever she gave all that stuff up very wrongly very horribly and everybody's laughing at it okay they're all laughing at it she gave up at least 12 and probably 14 or 15 different policies like she was big on defund the police in Minnesota she went out wait a minute I'm talking now if you don't mind please does that sound familiar lie she went out she went out in Minnesota and wanted to let criminals that killed people that burned down Minneapolis she went out and raised money to get them out of jail she did things that nobody would ever think of now she wants to do transgender operations on illegal alien that are in prison this is a radical left liberal that would do this she wants to confiscate your guns and she will never allow fracking in Pennsylvania if she won the election fracking in Pennsylvania will end on day one just to finish one thing so important in my opinion so I got the oil business going like nobody has ever done before they took when they took over they got rid of it started getting rid of it and the prices were going up the roof they immediately let these guys go to where they were I would have been five times four times five times higher because you're talking about three and a half years ago they got it up to where I was because they had no choice because the prices of energy were were quadrupling and doubling you saw what happened to gasoline so they said let's go back to Trump but if she won the election the day after that election they'll go back to destroying our country and oil will be dead fossil fuel will be dead we'll go back to windmills and we'll go back to solar where they need a whole desert to get some energy to come out you ever see a solar plant by the way I'm a big fan of solar but they take 400 500 Acres of desert soil are not good things the environment understand thank you Lindsay thank you we have an election in just 56 days and and I want to talk about the peaceful transfer of power which of course we all know is a Cornerstone of our democracy and the role of a president uh in a moment of crisis uh Mr President on January 6th you told your supporters to March to the capital you said you would be right there with them the country and the world saw what played out of the capital that day the officers coming under attack AIDS in the west wings say you watched it unfold on television off the Oval Office uh you did send out tweets but it was more than two hours before you sent out that video message uh telling your supporters to go home is there anything you regret about what you did on that day you just said a thing that isn't covered peacefully and patrio ially I said during my speech not later on peacefully and patriotically and nobody on the other side was killed Ashley babot was shot by an outof control police officer that should have never ever shot her it's a disgrace but we didn't do this group of people that have been treated so badly I ask what about all the people that are pouring into our country and killing people that she allowed to pour in she was the bodar remember that she was the borders are she doesn't want to be called the borders are because she's embarrassed by the Border in fact she said at the beginning oh I'm surprised you're not talking about the Border yet that's because she knows what a bad job they've done what about those people what's what are they going to be prosecuted when are these people from countries all over the world not just South America they're coming in from all over the world David all over the world and crime rates are down all over the world because of it one of those David one of those people going to be prosecuted when are the people that burned down Minneapolis going to be prosecuted or in Seattle they went into Seattle they took over a big percentage of the city of Seattle when are those people going to be prosecuted but let me just ask you you might ask her that question you were the president you were watching it unfold on television it's a very simple question as we move forward toward another election is there anything you regret about what you did on that day yes sir I had nothing to do with that other than they asked me to make a speech I showed up for a speech I said I think it's going to be big I went to Nancy Pelosi and the mayor of Washington DC and the mayor put it back in writing as you know I said you know this is going to be a very big Rally or whatever you want to call it and again it wasn't done by me it was done by others I said I'd like to give you 10,000 National Guard or soldiers they rejected me Nancy Pelosi rejected me it was just two weeks ago her daughter has a tape of her saying she is fully responsible for what happened they want to get rid of that tape it would have never happened if Nancy Pelosi and the mayor of Washington did their jobs I wasn't responsible for security Nancy Pelosi was responsible she didn't do her job the question was about you as president not about former speaker Pelosi but I do want vice president Harris to respond here I was at the capital on January 6th I was the vice president elect I was also an acting Senator I was there and on that day the president of the United States incited a violent mob to attack our nation's capital to desecrate our nation's capital on that day 140 law enforcement officers were injured and some died and understand the former president has been indicted and impeached for exactly that reason but this is not an isolated situation let's remember Charlottesville where there was a mob of people carrying tiki torches spewing anti-semitic hate and what did the president then at the time say there were fine people on each side let's remember that when it came to the proud boys a militia the president said the former president said stand back and stand by so for everyone watching who remembers what January sixth was I say we don't have to go back let's not go back we're not going back it's time to turn the page and if that was a bridge too far for you well there is a place in our campaign for you to stand for country to stand for our democracy to stand for rule of law and to end the chaos and to end the approach that is about attacking the foundations of our democracy cuz you don't like the outcome and be clear on that point Donald Trump the candidate has said in this election there will be a bloodbath if this and the outcome of this election is not to his liking let's turn the page on this let's not go back let's chart a course for the future and not go backwards to the past let me just follow up here it was a different term and it was a term that related to energy because they have destroyed our energy business that was where bloodbath was also on charlotesville that story has been as you would say debunked Laura Ingram Sean Hannity Jesse all of these people they covered it if they go an extra sentence they will see it was perfect it was debunked in almost every newspaper but they still bring it up just like they bring 2025 up they bring all of this stuff up I ask you this you talk about the the capital why are we allowing these millions of people to come through on the southern border how come she's not doing anything and I'll tell you what I would do and I would be very proud to do it I would say we would both leave this debate right now I'd like to see her go down to Washington DC during this debate because we're wasting a lot of time go down to because she's been so bad it's so ridiculous go down to Washington DC and let her sign a bill to close up the Border because they have the right to do it they don't need bills they have the right to do the president of the United States you'll get them out of bed you'll wake them up at 4:00 in the afternoon you'll say come on come on down to the office let's sign a bill If he if he signs a bill that the border is closed all he has to do is say it to the border patrol who are phenomenal if they do that the border is closed those people are killing many people unlike j6 we talked immigration here tonight I do want to focus on this next issue to both of you because it really brings us uh this into Focus Truth uh in these times that we're living in uh Mr President for three and a half years after uh you lost the 2020 election you repeatedly falsely claimed that you won many times saying you won in a landslide in the past couple of weeks leading up to this debate uh you have said quote you lost by a whisker that you quote didn't quite make it that you came up a little bit short are you that are you now acknowledging that you lost in 2020 I don't acknowledge that at all I said that sarcastically you know that it we said oh we lost by a whisker that was said sarcastically look there's so much proof all you have to do is look at it and they should have sent it back to the legislatures for approval I got almost 75 million votes the most votes any sitting president has ever gotten I was told if I got 63 which was what I got in 2016 you can't be beaten the election people should never be thinking about an election is fraudulent we need two things we need walls we need and we have to have it we have to have borders and we have to have good elections our elections are bad and a lot of these illegal immigrants coming in they're trying to get them to vote they can't even speak English they don't even know what country they're in practically and these people are trying to get them to vote and that's why they're allowing them to come into our country I did watch all of these pieces of video I I didn't detect the sarcasm lost by whisker we didn't quite make it and we should just point out here as clarification and you know this you and your allies 60 cases in front of many judges many of them no judge looked at it we didn't have standing that's the other thing they said we didn't have standing a technicality can you imagine a system where a person in an election doesn't have standing the president of the United States doesn't have standing that's how we lost if you look at the facts and I'd love to have you you'll do a special on it I'll show you Georgia and I'll show you Wisconsin and I'll show you Pennsylvania and I'll show you we have so many facts and statistics but you know what that doesn't matter because we have to solve the problem that we have right now that's old news and the problem that we have right now now is we have a nation in Decline and they have put it into decline we have a nation that is dying David Mr President thank you uh vice president Harris you heard the president there tonight he said he didn't say that that he lost by whisker so he still uh believes uh he did not lose the election uh that was won by President Biden uh and yourself but I do want to ask you about something that's come up in the last couple of days this was a post from uh president Trump about this upcoming election just weeks away he said when I win those people who cheated and then he lists donors voters election officials he says will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law which will include long-term prison sentences one of your campaign's top lawyers responded saying we won't let Donald Trump intimidate us we won't let him suppress the vote is that what you believe he's trying to do here Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people so let's be clear about that and clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that but we can cannot afford to have a president of the United States who attempts as he did in the past to upend the will of the voters in a free and fair election and I'm going to tell you that I I have traveled the world as Vice President of the United States and world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump I have talked with military leaders some of whom worked with you and they say you're a disgrace and when you then talk in this way in a presidential debate and deny what over and over again are court cases you have lost because you did in fact lose that election it leads one to believe that perhaps we do not have in the candidate to my right the temperament or or the ability to not be confused about fact that's deeply troubling and the American people deserve better I'll give you one minute to response president let me just tell you about world leaders Victor Orban one of the most respected men they call him a strong man he's a he's a tough person smart prime minister of Hungary they said why is the whole world blowing up three years ago it wasn't why is it blowing up he said because you need Trump back as president they were afraid of him China was afraid and I don't like to use the word afraid but I'm just quoting him China was afraid of him North Korea was afraid of him look at what going on with North Korea by the way he said Russia was afraid of him I ended the nordstream 2 Pipeline and Biden put it back on day one but he ended the XL Pipeline the XL pipeline in our country he ended that but he let the Russians build the pipeline going all over Europe and heading into Germany the biggest pipeline in the world look Victor Orban said it he said the most respected most feared person is Donald Trump we had no problems when Trump was president but when this weak pathetic man that you saw at a debate just a few months ago that if he weren't in that debate he'd be running on set of HSE he got no votes he got 14 million votes what you did you talk about a threat to democracy he got 14 million votes and they threw him out of office and you know what I'll give you a little secret he hates her he can't stand her but he got 14 million votes they threw him out she got zero votes and when she ran she was the first one to leave because she failed and now she's running I don't understand it but I'm okay with it because your time is up I think we're going to do very well we've got a lot more to get too turning now to the Israel Hamas War and the hostages who are still being held Americans among them vice president Harris in December you said quote Israel has a right to defend itself but you added quote it matters how saying International humanitarian law must be respected Israel must do more to protect innocent civilians you said that N9 months ago now now an estimated 40,000 Palestinians are dead nearly 100 hostages remain just last week prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there's not a deal in the making President Biden has not been able to break through the stalemate how would you do it well let's understand how we got here on October 7 Hamas a terrorist organization slaughtered 1200 Israelis many of them young people who were simply attending a concert women were horribly raped and so absolutely I said then I say now Israel has a right to defend itself we would and how it does so matters because it is also true far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed children mothers what we know is that this war must end it must when end immediately and the way it will end we need a ceasefire deal and we need the hostages out and so we will continue to work around the clock on that work around the clock also understanding that we must chart a course for a two-state solution and in that solution there must be security for the Israeli people and Israel and in equal measure for the Palestinians but the one thing I will assure you always I will always give Israel the ability to defend itself in particular as rates to as it relates to Iran and any threat that Iran and its proxies pose to Israel but we must have a two-state solution where we can rebuild Gaza where the Palestinians have security self-determination and the dignity they so rightly deserve president Trump how would you negotiate with Netanyahu and also Hamas in order to get the hostages out and prevent the killing of more innocent civilians in Gaza if I were president it would have never started if I were president Russia would have never ever I know Putin very well he would have never and there was no threat of it either by the way for four years have gone into Ukraine and killed millions of people when you add it up far worse than people understand what's going on over there but when she mentions about Israel all of a sudden she hates Israel she wouldn't even meet with Netanyahu when he went to Congress to make a very important speech she refused to be there because she was at a it party of hers she want to go to the sority party she hates Israel if she's president I believe that Israel will not exist within two years from now and I've been pretty good at predictions and I hope I'm wrong about that one she hates Israel at the same time in her own way she hates the Arab population because the whole place is going to get blown up Arabs Jewish people Israel Israel will be gone it would have never happened Iran was broke under Donald Trump now Iran has $300 billion because they took off all the sanctions that I had Iran had no money for Hamas or Hezbollah or any of the 28 different uh spheres of Terror and they are spheres of Terror horrible Terror they had no money it was a big story and you know it you covered it very well actually they had no money for Terror they were broke now they're a rich nation and now now what they're doing is they're spreading that money around look at what's happening with the houis and Yemen look at what's going on in the Middle East this would have never happened I will get that settled and fast and I'll get the war with Ukraine and Russia ended if I'm president-elect I'll get it done before even becoming president vice president Harris he says you hate Israel oh that's absolutely not true I have my entire career and life supported Israel and the Israeli people he knows that he's trying to again divide and and distract from the reality which is it is very well known that Donald Trump is weak and wrong on National Security and foreign policy it is well known that he admires dictators wants to be a dictator on day one according to himself it is well known that he said of Putin that he can do whatever the he wants and go into Ukraine it is well known that he said when Russia went into Ukraine it was brilliant it is well known he exchanged love letters with Kim Jong-un and it is absolutely welln that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they're so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors and that is why so many military leaders who you have worked with have told me you are a disgrace that is why we understand that we have to have a president who is not consistently weak and wrong on National Security including the importance of upholding and respecting in highest regard our military vice president Harris thank you they're the ones and she's the one that caused it that's weak on National Security by allowing Every Nation last month month for the year 168 different countries sending people into our country their crime weights are way down Putin endorsed her last week said I hope she wins and I think he meant it because what he's gotten away with is absolutely incredible it wouldn't have happened with me the leaders of other countries think that they're weak and incompetent and they are they're grossly incompetent and I just ask one question why does Biden go in and kill the Keystone Pipeline and approved the single biggest deal that Russia's ever made nordstream 2 the biggest pipeline anywhere in the world going to Germany and all over Europe because they're weak and they're ineffective and Biden by the way gets paid a lot of money thank you we have a lot of issues to get to we'll be right back with much more of this historic ABC News presidential debate from the national Constitution Center right here in Philadelphia back in a moment the ABC News news presidential debate will continue after this [Music] [Music] thinking of banking in Africa think zth in Philadelphia Pennsylvania Here Again David mure and lindsy Davis welcome back to this historic ABC News presidential debate tonight we're going to continue here and I want to turn to the war in Ukraine we're now 2 and a half years uh into this conflict Mr President it has been the position of the Biden Administration that we must defend Ukraine from Russia from Vladimir Putin to defend their sovereignty their democracy that it's in America's best interest to do so arguing that if Putin wins he may be embolden to move even further into other countries you have said you would solve this war in 24 hours you said so just before the break tonight how exactly would you do that and I want to ask you a very simple question tonight do you want Ukraine to win this War I want the war to stop I want to save lives that are being uselessly people being killed by the millions it's the millions it's so much worse than the numbers that you're getting which are fake numbers look we're in for 250 billion or more because they don't ask Europe which is a much bigger beneficiary to getting this thing done than we are they're in for $150 billion doll less because Biden and you don't have the courage to ask Europe like I did with NATO they paid billions and billions hundreds of billions of dollars when I said either you pay up or we're not going to protect you anymore so that's maybe one of the reasons they don't like me as much as they like weak people but you take a look at what's happening we're in for 250 to 275 billion they're into 100 to 150 they should be forced to equalize with that being said I want to get the War settled I know zalinski very well and I know Putin very well I have a good relationship and they respect your president okay they respect me they don't respect Biden how would you respect him why for what reason he hasn't even made a phone call in two years to Putin hasn't spoken to anybody they don't even try and get it that is a war that's dying to be settled I will get it settled before I even become president if I win when I'm president-elect and what I'll do is I'll speak to one I'll speak to the other I'll get them together that war would have never happened and in fact when I saw Putin after I left unfortunately left because our our country has gone to hell but after I left when I saw him building up soldiers he did it after I left I said oh he must be negotiating it must be a good strong point of negotiation well it wasn't because Biden had no idea how to talk to him he had no idea how to stop it and now you have millions of people dead and it's only getting worse and it could lead to World War I don't kid yourself David we're playing with World War III and we have a president that we don't even know if he's where is our president we don't even know if he's a president just to clarify they threw him out of a campaign like a dog we don't even know is he our president but we have a president Mr that doesn't know he's alive your time is up with just to clarify in the question do you believe it's in the US best interest for Ukraine to win this war yes or no I think it's the US best interest to get this war finished and just get it done negotiate a deal because we have to stop all of these human lives from being destroyed I want to take this to vice president Harris I want to get your thoughts on support for Ukraine in this moment but also as commander-in-chief if elected how would you deal with Vladimir Putin and would it be any different from what we're seeing from President Biden well first of all it's important to remind the former president you're not running against Joe Biden you're running against me I believe the reason that Donald Trump says that this war would be over within 24 hours is because he would just give it up and that's not who we are as Americans let's understand what happened here um I actually met with zalinski a few days before Russia invaded tried through Force to change territorial boundaries to defy one of the most important International rules and Norms which is the importance of sovereignty and territorial integrity and I met with President zansky I shared with him American intelligence about how he could defend himself days later I went to NATO's Eastern flank to Poland and Romania and through the work that I and others did we brought 50 countries together to support Ukraine in its righteous defense and because of our support because of the air defense the ammunition the artillery the javelins the Abrams tanks that we have provided Ukraine stands as an independent and free country if Donald Trump were President Putin would be sitting in keev right now and understand what that would mean because Putin's agenda is not just about Ukraine understand why the European allies and our NATO allies are so thankful that you are no longer president and that we understand the importance of the greatest military Alliance the world has ever known which is NATO and what we have done to preserve the ability of zalinsky and the ukrainians to fight for their independence otherwise Putin would be sitting in keev with his on the rest of Europe starting with Poland and why don't you tell the 800,000 polish Americans right here in Pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch vice president Harris thank you we've heard from both of you on Ukraine tonight Afghanistan came up in the last hour I I wanted her to respond to something you said earlier and I please I'll I'll give you a minute here Putin would be sitting in Moscow and he wouldn't have lost 300,000 men and women but he would have been sitting in Moscow quiet please he would have been sitting in Moscow much happier than he is right now but eventually you know he's got a thing that other people don't have he's got nuclear weapons they don't ever talk about that he got nuclear weapons nobody ever thinks about that and eventually maybe he'll use him and maybe hasn't been that threatening but he does have the something we don't even like to talk about nobody likes to talk about it but just so you understand they sent her to negotiate peace before this war started three days later he went in and he started the war because everything they said was weak and stupid they said the wrong things that war should have never started she was the Emissary they sent her in to negotiate with zalinski and Putin and she did and the war started three days later and that's the kind of Talent we have with her she's worse than Biden in my opinion I think he's the worst president in the history of our country she goes down as the worst vice president in the history of our country but let me tell you something she is a horrible negotiator they sent her in to negotiate as soon as they left Putin did The Invasion president Trump thank you you did bring up something you said she went to negotiate with Vladimir Putin vice president Harris have you ever met Vladimir Putin can you clarify tonight yet again I said it at the beginning of this debate you're going to hear a bunch of Lies coming from the fellow and that is another one when I went to meet with President zans I've now met with him over five times the reality is it has been about standing as America always should as a leader upholding International new rules and Norms as a leader who shows strength understanding that the alliances we have around the world are dependent on our ability to look out for our friends and not favor are enemies because you adore strong men instead of caring about democracy and that is very much what is at stake here the president of the United States is commanderin-chief and the American people have a right to rely on a president who understands the significance of America's role and responsibility in terms of ensuring that there is stability and ensuring we stand up for our principles and not sell them for the for the benefit of personal flattery we've talked about Ukraine and Vladimir Putin I do want to talk about Afghanistan it came up in in the first hour of this debate I I wanted to move on to Afghanistan Stenberg said Trump did the most amazing thing I've ever seen he got these countries the 28 countries at the time to pay up he said I've never seen he's the head of NATO he said I've never seen for years we were paying almost all of NATO we were being ripped off by European Nations both on trade and on NATO I got them to pay up by saying one of the statements you made before if you don't pay we're not going to protect you otherwise we would have never gotten it he said it was one of the most incredible jobs that he's ever seen done thank you I want to turn to Afghanistan it came up in the first hour of the debate and we witnessed a a poignant moment today on Capitol Hill honoring the soldiers who died in the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan I do want to ask the vice president uh do you believe you bear any responsibility in the way that withdraw played out well I will tell you I agreed with President Biden's decision to pull out of Afghanistan four presidents said they would and Joe Biden did and as a result America's taxpayers are not paying the $300 million a day we were paying for that endless war and as of today there is not one member of the United States military who is in active duty in a combat zone in any war zone around the world the first time this Century but let's understand how we got to where we are Donald Trump when he was president negotiated one of the weakest deals you can imagine he calls himself a deal maker even his National Security advisor said it was a weak terrible deal and here's how it went down he bypassed the Afghan government he negotiated directly with a terrorist organization called the Taliban the negotiation involved the Taliban getting 5,000 ter IST Taliban terrorist released and get this no get this and the president at the time invited the Taliban to Camp David a place of stored significance for us as Americans a place where we honor the importance of American diplomacy where we invite and receive respected world leaders and this former president as president in invited them to Camp David because he does not again appreciate the role and responsibility of the president of the United States to be commanderin-chief with a level of respect and this gets back to the point of how he has consistently disparaged and demeaned members of our military fallen soldiers and the work that we must do to uphold the strength and the respect of the United States of America around the world vice president Harris thank you president Trump your response to her saying that you began the negotiations with the Taliban so if you take a look at that period of time the Taliban was killing our soldiers a lot of them with snipers and I got involved with the Taliban because the Taliban was doing the killing that's the Fighting Force within Afghanistan they don't bother doing that because you know they deal with the wrong people all the time but I got involved and Abdul is the head of the Taliban he is still the head of the Taliban and I told Abdul don't do it anymore you do it anymore you're going to have problems and he said why do you send me a picture of my house I said you're going to have to figure that out Abdul and for 18 months we had nobody killed we did have an agreement negotiated by Mike Pompeo it was a very good agreement the reason it was good it was we were getting out we would have been out faster than them but we wouldn't have lost the soldiers we wouldn't have left many Americans behind and we wouldn't have left we wouldn't have left $85 billion worth of brand new beautiful military equipment behind and just to finish they blew it the agreement said you have to do this this this this this and they didn't do it they didn't do it the agreement was was terminated by us because they didn't do what they were supposed to do I want to move and these people did the worst withdrawal and in my opinion the most embarrassing moment in the history of our country and by the way that's why Russia attacked Ukraine because they saw how incompetent she and her boss are President Trump thank you I want to move on now to race and politics in this country Mr President you recently said a vice president Harris quote I didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black I want to ask a bigger picture question here tonight why do you believe it's appropriate to weigh in on the racial identity of your opponent I don't and I don't care I don't care what she is I don't care uh you make a big deal out of something I couldn't care less whatever she wants to be is okay with me but those were your words so I'm ask I don't know I don't know I mean all I can say is I read where she was not black that she put out and I'll say that and then I read that she was black and that's okay either one was okay with me that's up to her that's up to her vice president Harris your thoughts on this I think it's I mean honestly I think it's a a tragedy that we have um someone who wants to be president who has consistently over the course of his career attempted to use race to divide the American people you know I do believe that the vast majority of us know that we have so much more in common than what separates us and we don't want this kind of approach that is just constantly trying to divide us and especially by race and let's remember how Donald Trump started he was a a a a land he owned land he owned buildings and he he was investigated because he refused to rent property to black families let's remember this is the same individual who took out a full page ad in the New York Times calling for the execution of five young black and Latino boys who were innocent the central par Park 5 took out a full page ad calling for their execution this is the same individual who spread birther lies about the first black president of the United States and I think the American people want better than that want better than this want someone who understands as I do I travel our country we see in each other a friend we see in each other a na neighbor we don't want a leader who is constantly trying to have Americans Point their fingers at each other I meet with people all the time who tell me can we please just have discourse about how we're going to invest in the aspirations and the Ambitions and the dreams of the American people knowing that regardless of people's color or the language their grandmother speaks we all have the same dreams and aspirations and want a president who invest in those not in hate and division vice president Harris thank you Lindsay president Trump this is now your third time this is the most divisive presidency in the history of our country there's never been anything like it they're destroying our country and they come up with things like what she just said going back many many years when a lot of people including Mayor Bloomberg agreed with me on the Central Park 5 they admitted they said they plead guilty and I said well if they plad guilty they'd badly hurt a person killed a person ultimately and if they pled guilty then they plad we not guilty but this is a person that has to stretch back years 40 50 years ago because there's nothing now I built one of the greatest economies in the history of the world and I'm going to build it again it's going to be bigger better and stronger but they're destroying our economy they have no idea what a good economy is their oil policies every single policy and remember this she is Biden you know she's trying to get away from Biden I don't know the gentleman she says she is Biden the worst inflation we've ever had a horrible economy because inflation has made it so bad and you can't get away with that thank you your time is up I want to respond to that though I want to just respond briefly clearly I am not Joe Biden and I am certainly not Donald Trump and what I do offer is a new generation of leadership for our country one who believes in what is possible one who brings a sense of optimism about what we can do instead of always disparaging the American people I believe in what we can do to strengthen our small businesses which is why I have a plan let's talk about our plans and then let's compare the plans I have a plan to give startup businesses $50,000 tax deduction to pursue their Ambitions their Innovation their ideas their hard work I have a plan $6,000 for young families for the first year of your child's life to help you in that most critical stage of your child's development I have a plan that is about allowing people to be able to pursue what has been fleeing in terms of the American dream by offer offering a help with down payment of $25,000 down payment assistance for firsttime home buyers that's the kind of conversation I believe David that people really want tonight as opposed to a conversation that is constantly about belittling and name calling let's turn the page Harward thank you let's turn to policy let's turn move on President TR let's turn to policy please has a plan to defund the police she has a plan to confiscate everybody's gun to not allow fracking in Pennsylvania or anywhere else that's what her plan is until just recently I just need to former president has said something twice that I need to respond to I'm sorry we're going we're going to move on vice president president Trump this is now your third time running for president you have long vowed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare you have failed to accomplish that you now say you're going to keep Obama care quote unless we can do something much better last month you said quote we're working on it so tonight 9 years after you first started running do you have a plan and can you tell us what it is Obamacare was lousy Health Care always was it's not very good today and what I said that if we come up with something and we are working on things we're going to do it and we're going to replace it but remember this I inherited Obamacare because Democrats wouldn't change it they wouldn't vote for it they were unanimous they wouldn't vote to change it if they would have done that we would have had a much better plan than Obamacare but the Democrats came up they wouldn't vote for it I had a choice to make when I was President do I save it and make it as good as it can be never going to be great or do I let it rot and I felt I had an obligation even though politically it would have been good to just let it rot and let it go away I decided and I told my people the top people and they very good people I have a lot of good people in this that Administration we read about the bad ones we had some real bad ones too and so do they they have really bad ones the difference is they don't get rid of them but let me just explain I had a choice to make do I save it and make it as good as it can be or do I let it rot and I saved it I did the right thing but it's still never going to be great and it's too expensive for people and what we will do is we're looking at different plans if we can come up with a plan that's going to cost our people our population less money and be better health care than Obamacare then I would absolutely do it but until then I'd run it as good as it can be run so just yes or no you still do not have a plan I have concepts of a plan I'm not president right now but if we come up with something I would only change it if we come up with something that's better and less expensive and there are Concepts and options we we have to do that and you'll be hearing about it in the not too distant future Vice president Harris in 2017 you supported Bernie Sanders proposal to do away with private insurance and create a government-run Health Care System two years later you proposed a plan that included a private insurance option what is your plan today well first of all I absolutely support and over the last four years as vice president private healthc care options but what we need to do is maintain and grow the Affordable Care Act but I I I'll get to that Lindsay I just need to respond to a previous point that the former president has made I've made very clear my position on fracking and then this business about taking everyone's guns away Tim Walls and I are both gun owners we're not taking anybody's guns away so stop with the continuous lying about this stuff as it relates to the Affordable Care Act understand let just look at the history to know where people stand when Donald Trump was President 60 times he tried to get rid of the Affordable Care Act 60 times I was a Senator at the time when I will never forget the early morning hours when it was up for for a vote in the United States Senate and the late great John McCain who you have disparaged as being you don't like him you said at the time because he got caught he was an American hero the late great John McCain I will never forget that night walked onto the senate floor and said no you don't no you don't no you don't get rid of the Affordable Care Act you have no plan and what the Affordable Care Act has done is eliminate the ability of insurance companies to deny people with pre-existing conditions I don't have to tell the people watching tonight you remember what that was like remember when an insurance company could deny if a child had asthma if someone was a breast cancer survivor if a if a grandparent had diabetes and thankfully as I've been vice president and we over the last four years have strengthened the Affordable Care Act we have allowed for the first time Medicare to negotiate drug prices on behalf of you the American people Donald Trump said he was going to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices he never did we did and now we have Capp the cost of insulin at $35 a month since I've been Vice President we have capped the cost of prescription medication for seniors at $2,000 a year and when I am President we will do that for all people understanding that the value I bring to this is that access to health care should be a right and not just a privilege of those who can afford it and the plan has to be to strengthen the Affordable Care Act not get rid of it pass PR in terms of where Donald Trump stands on that I want to move to an issue that's important for a lot made a mistake at number one John McCain fought Obamacare for 10 years but it wasn't only him it were all of the Democrats that kept it going and you know what we can do much better than Obamacare much less money but she won't improve private insurance for people private medical insurance that's another thing she doesn't want to get people are paying privately for insurance that have worked hard and made money and they want to have private she wants everybody to be on government insurance where you wait six months for an operation that you need immediately president Trump thank you we have another issue that we'd like to get to that's important for a number of Americans in particular younger voters and that's climate change president Trump with regard to the environment you say that we have to have clean air and clean water vice president Harris you call climate change an existential threat the question to you both tonight is what would you do to fight climate change and vice president Harris we'll start with you one minute for you each well the former president had said the climate change is a hoax and what we know is that it is very real you ask anyone who lives in a state who has experienced these extreme weather occurrences who now is either being denied home insurance or it's being jacked up you ask anybody who has been um the victim of what that means in terms of losing their home having nowhere to go we know that we can actually deal with this issue the young people of America care deeply about this issue and I am proud that as vice president over the last four years we have invested a trillion dollars in a clean energy economy while we have also increased domestic gas production to Historic levels we have created over 800,000 new manufacturing jobs while I have been vice president we have invested in clean energy to the point that we are opening up factories around the world Donald Trump said he was going to create manufacturing jobs he lost manufacturing jobs and I'm also proud to have the endorsement of the United Auto Workers and Shan feain who also know that part of building a clean energy economy includes investing in American made products American automobiles it includes growing what we can do around American manuf facturing and opening up Auto plants not closing them like happened under Donald Trump vice president Harris thank you that didn't happen under Donald Trump let me just tell you they lost 10,000 manufacturing jobs this last month it's going they're all leaving uh they're building big Auto plants in Mexico in many cases owned by China they're building these massive plants and they think they're going to sell their cars into the United States because of these people what they have given to China is unbelievable but we're not going to let that we'll put tariffs on those cars so they can't come into our country because they will kill the United Auto Workers and any auto worker whether it's in Detroit or South Carolina or any other place what they've done to business and Manufacturing in this country is horrible we have nothing because they they refuse you know Biden doesn't go after people because supposedly China paid him millions of dollars he's afraid to do it between him and his son they get all this money from Ukraine they get all this money from all of these different countries and then you wonder why is he so loyal to this one that one Ukraine China why is he why did he get $3 and5 million doar from the mayor of moscow's wife why did he get why did she pay him three and A5 million this is a crooked Administration and they're selling our country down the tubes president Trump thank you thank you we'll be right back with closing statements from both of our candidates in historic night this ABC News presidential debate from Philadelphia back in a you so I think you've heard tonight two very different Visions for our country one that is focused on the future and the other that is focused on the past and an attempt to take us backward but we're not going back and I do believe that the American people know we all have so much more in common than what separates us and we can chart a new way forward and a vision of that includes having a plan understanding the aspirations the dreams the hopes the ambition of the American people which is why I intend to create an opportunity economy investing in small businesses in new families in what we can do around protecting seniors what we can do that is about giving hardworking folks a break and bringing down the cost of living I believe in what we can do together that is about sustaining America standing in the world and ensuring that we have the respect that we so rightly deserve including respecting our military and ensuring we have the most lethal fighting force in the world I will be a president that will protect our fundamental rights and freedoms including the right of a woman to make decisions about her own body and not have her government tell her what to do I'll tell you I started my career as a prosecutor I was a DA I was an attorney general the United States Senator and now Vice President I've only had one client the people and I'll tell you as a prosecutor I never asked a victim or a witness are you a Republican or a Democrat the only thing I ever ask them are you okay and that's the kind of President we need right now someone who cares about you and is not putting themselves first I intend to be a president for all Americans and focus on what we can do over the next 10 and 20 years years to build back up our country by investing right now in you the American people vice president Harris thank you president Trump so she just started by saying she's going to do this she's going to do that she's going to do all these wonderful things why hasn't she done it she's been there for three and a half years they've had three and a half years to fix the Border they've had three and A2 years to create jobs and all the things we talked about why hasn't she done it she should leave right now go down to that beautiful white house go to the capital get everyone together and do the things you want to do but you haven't done it and you won't do it because you believe in things that the American people don't believe in you believe in things like we're not going to Frack we're not going to take fossil fuel we're not going to do things that are going to make this country strong whether you like it or not Germany tried that and within one year they were back to building normal energy plants we're not ready for it we can't sacrifice our country for the sake of bad Vision but I just ask one simple question why didn't she do it we're a failing Nation We're a nation that's in serious decline we're being laughed at all over the world all over the world they're laugh I know the leaders very well they're coming to see me they call me we're laughed at all over the world they don't understand what happened to us as a nation we're not a leader we don't have any idea what's going on we have wars going on in the Middle East we have wars going on with Russia and Ukraine we're going to end up in a third world war and it'll be a war like no other because of nuclear weapons the power of Weaponry I rebuilt our entire military she gave a lot of it away to the Taliban she gave it to Afghanistan what these people have done to our country and maybe toughest of all is allowing millions of people to come into our country many of them are criminals and they're destroying our country the worst president the worst vice president in the history of our country president Trump thank you and that is our ABC News presidential debate from here in Philadelphia at the national Constitution Center I'm lindsy Davis and I'm David mu thank you for watching here in the US and all over the world and from all of us here at ABC News good night and historic night with a current vice president the first ever woman and first ever person of color to be vice president debating a former president of the United States before the debate Trump supporters expressed hope that the former president would stay focused on issues such as in inflation and immigration and that did appear to be a struggle for Donald Trump perhaps too often most notably when he invoked what authorities in Springfield are Ohio is are saying is just false a debunked meme that Haitian migrants are stealing and eating pets he said that on the debate stage tonight if illegal immigration is the most important issue to you as a voter he he did talk about it aggressively but vice president Harris's supporters have got to be pleased with her performance this evening which was focused on an a telling voters that she cares about them and she has a plan for them and over and over in Donald Trump into talking about crowd sizes and court cases and Nancy Pelosi and rush aate and and grievance and he took the bait almost every time if not every time he cited Fox hosts as fact Checkers he invoked Hungarian strongman Victor Orbin as a character witness it was like a 4chan post come to life he he really took her bait almost every time if you're a fisherman as I struggle to be you would be lucky to have your bait taken so often instead of focusing on Trump filling in the blanks for those voters unfamiliar with her he focused on stuff as if he was the incumbent I I'm not sure Harris necessarily did enough to fill in the blanks that undecided voters might have about specifics about her plans but there's no question Democrats have to feel good tonight about the trade of Biden for Harris who showed herself to be a strong candidate she delivered a strong message and yes she prosecuted the case against Trump she started the debate she began to debate approaching Donald Trump shaking his hand at the podium kind of forcing him to shake her hand introducing herself and and from that moment on Dana she took the fight right to him you know I I'm just looking up this is the quote that I think really sums up what kamla Harris her whole message was tonight you're not running against Joe Biden you're running against me it was obviously a planned line but it defitely explains how she kind of triangulated uh and she separated herself obviously from Donald Trump and where she needed to uh from Joe Biden and what was so fascinating is that she didn't do it on defense she did it on offense really in every turn there are real weaknesses in the Biden Harris Administration from the economy to immigration to Afghanistan just take Afghanistan for an example um instead of talking about the disastrous chaotic withdrawal she turned it to the fact that he invited the Taliban to Camp David and talked he started talking about Abdul and exactly um and then you you mentioned that she was baiting him she baited him and he took the bait every single time as you said she was also using the language that he usually uses she she kind of stole it from him disgrace weak things like that that really get to him uh the other thing that I just want to add is that she began to turn to who she is by saying I'm not Joe Biden I'm Donald Trump I'm from a new generation a different generation of of of leaders and she clearly wanted people to understand what she's made of for people who were really wanting to know all of her 17-point policy plans they might be disappointed but for people want who want to know who she is and what she's made of they got it tonight now the voters are going to have to decide and it's going to take them a while to digest it and we don't want to suggest that we have any idea how this is going to play but those are the observations for how she handled that and the way that he did not handle it well I think it's it's pretty simple I mean she had a plan she executed on that plan the plan was to uh quite simply uh bait Donald Trump to force him to battle on her turf at every turn I mean she talked about China he starts defending his love for for xiin Ping she talks about um you know she she talks about his sexual assault cases he starts defending himself on that Turf she wanted to do that but I also think I I did see her trying to kind of really lay the groundwork on the policy issues that the campaign thinks will matter particularly in the state of Pennsylvania right the Commonwealth excuse me of Pennsylvania um she the very first answer that she gave was about her Economic Policy where she talked about the $50,000 that they want to they want to put uh out there for small business owners that they would get in a tax refund I I thought that was in incredibly important because they clearly know that there were a lot of things that they put out on economic policy not all of them were received well that one was received well and I and I also thought you know there there were other moments where she talked a lot about her family she talked about her upbringing she talked about um she was raised I mean the plan was to not just introduce herself but to introduce herself specifically to Pennsylvania voters so that they understood on economic policy on fracking where she stood and she executed that plan where where whereas Trump I don't know what the plan was that he had Jake I didn't think I was ever going to witness a debate as devastating as the one that you and Dana uh moderated back in in June where Joe Biden basically tanked his reelection campaign I think tonight was just as devastating I think that kamla Harris pitched a shut out uh on almost every subject I can think of she shut Trump down on abortion she shut Trump down on January 6th in democracy she shut him down on National Security and turned to the former president and said the military leaders who served with you think that you're a disgrace and then as Dana mentioned very powerfully at the end made the point that she is the candidate of change and we need to turn the agage from a a decade of division and polarization on substance I think she she pitched a shout out and I think she did on style as well I mean my the image of the debate to me is she's there happy smiling expressive shaking her head uh at and dismay at things Trump was saying and Trump looked angry scowling she was looking directly at the audience he was looking at the moderators and arguing with them and something else he Donald Trump look old tonight and and you know some somebody said uh on my show on Saturday she wins just by showing up I didn't know that that was going to be true I think it was she was the candidate just from the moment the two of them were on M everything that she said well what you saw really under control vice president kamla Harris Prosecuting this debate with surgical Precision she was aware as she must have been as a prosecutor that the second you were inside of a courtroom the jury is looking at everything you're doing muted microphones doesn't matter her verb non-verbal cues her body language her incredulous Expressions at one point putting her hand under her chin to demonstrate that she was completely baffled by his line of defense losing a battle of expert Witnesses you're talking about talking about National Security advisors talking about Nobel laurates talking about the whole Litany of people who do not buy what he's selling also very well trained and seasoned and no KN how to Grapple with somebody who is going to possibly be bombastic petulant defensive and have a derailed effort she focus on all of those things I saw somebody who when she came out allow me to reintroduce myself my name is kamla Harris on behalf of kamla Harris she came out with that in mind I think she executed now Donald Trump tried to derail her a number of times but notice I'm saying the words Donald Trump in the way she did it wasn't president Trump she was referring to him as similar as you would in a courtroom the defend the defendant under his title reminding you of what how did she phrase it what he left us with it was a really Dynamite performance so Anderson I mean his lack of parrying his lack of making kamla Harris and the Biden Harris record the focus I mean if you watched this debate and you didn't know that she was the incumbent vice president you saw a debate where Donald Trump was really on defense and and he and his record were the subject of the debate not the incumbent leader KL Harris did tonight what no Governor Senator politician business person who has run against him in primaries for in 2016 uh and certainly anything he faced in 2020 has fig figured out what no one else figured out how to do certainly Marco Rubio didn't figure it out by going after a little hands he debased himself as many have um I want to show just some key moments where she needle Donald Trump on the most sort of obvious basic things that we all know he has said we all know our weak points to devastating effect let's just take a look let's talk about what Donald Trump left us Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression Donald Trump left us the worst Public Health epidemic in a century Donald Trump left us the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War what the Wharton School has said is Donald Trump's plan would actually explode the deficit I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies because it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like cannibal Lector he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also not notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you if you want to really know the inside track on who the former president is if he didn't make it clear already just ask people who have worked with him John King it was the moment she talked about his crowd size of all things and people not even was crowd siiz it was people being bored and leaving his rallies early I don't think he ever recovered from that he was she started shouting and he never stopped She triggered him there I think she was uneven at the top not a bad answer first answer in the economy but not a great answer she got her footing during the abortion conversation where she felt more comfortable and then she triggered him with the people leave your rallies uh and he lost it and he was angry from that moment on his voice went up he started angering he told a lot of lies Daniel Dale's going to be up all night we should started GoFundMe for his espresso machine uh he would he did and so what did she do she triggered him on covid January 6 in democracy abortion chaos lies and his anger what are those those are the issues that turned the American suburbs away from Donald Trump and why he lost the 2020 election those are the voters who were waiting to see if she could stand there and be a plausible president next to him she cleared that bar that doesn't mean she won their votes but she cleared that bar with eight weeks left in the election she stood next to a former president and she more than held her own and on many of the issues uh she schooled him she simply schooled him him because she triggered him into his lies and into his anger which does not sell well with the the middle of the electorate that will decide things eight weeks from tonight you know I've been involved in a lot of these I helped prepare a a a candidate for these debates six of them and I've been watching them since I was a little boy I've scarcely seen a one like this uh and and the degree to which she dominated this and you know part of it was uh butt kicking and part of it was was kind of someone doing themselves in I said earlier jokingly that uh you know when they said he's a Muhammad Ali in the debates that you know their fear hasib be he knocks himself out he kind of helped but she set him up as John said but these things are more than about issues these things are tests these campaigns these debates they're oral exams for the hardest job on the planet and people judge you in the these moment to stand up to that pressure to to to to to to be coherent to deliver a case uh and she certainly did that tonight man she whooped him she just whooped him uh and I think that there's been a a desire you know good fiction there's like wish fulfillment like you know you watch a movie because you want something to happen like some great romance people have wanted to see somebody put this bully in his place and people have watched Contender after Contender failed to put him in his place she got up there and she put him in his place she baited him and then she spanked him she baited him and then she spanked him and it and not only did she pass the commander-in-chief test he failed it he failed it do you want this guy dealing with a dictator when he can literally just be I mean you could see the punches coming he couldn't get out of the way um I mean if you can so unhinge somebody by saying people leave your rally any world leader can manipulate you into anything can so so I think that she passed the the the test he failed it but I think also uh she was speaking for the people she really was speaking for the people uh I think the right wing may not see it but she kept coming back to a middle- class background uh he kept talking about himself and himself he went down every Rabbit Hole imaginable kamla Harris did something great for every parent in America she put the bully in his place yeah I'm not I I can't add more to what you guys have said using political terms such as uh butt whooping um but she I mean Harris hacked Donald Trump tonight and we talked earlier I mentioned you know being unconventional which he has been all these years doesn't mean he's unpredictable and it turned out she could use a Mad Libs of triggers of everything he's ever talked about or been bothered by and used them in a formula that was to first talk about an attack line he might have said to her take a topic she was weak on and follow it up with a trigger for him and then watch him spin himself in circles trying to defend it and at the start of this conversation at the start of the night we talked about who's going to look like an incumbent versus who's going to look like a challenger and she I think she made herself look like the Challenger to a person and really kind of ran through his record I mean you know you know him well I mean even on the immigration question she quickly turned it and totally emasculated him and got him discombobulated she dismantled him and made it that on the issues he should be the strongest on border security the economy he ended up retiga his rallies and talking about his crowd sizes I mean she she put the bait out there and he took it and I'm hearing from Republicans because I'm trying to think from the perspective of okay if you're a trump for you were at home what are you thinking sitting Republican lawmakers who objectively think she won the debate but also that the mask is starting to slip with Donald Trump that this is The Man Who projects himself as strong as in command and in fact he simply is not with just a minor challenging asking for more substantive questions asking him to lay out a healthare plan basic things he just can't do it certainly not the way he could have in previous years to the healthcare point I think the moderators did a very good job in the idea that you know you were president for four years now it's been three and a half years at Joe Biden you ran for president a couple years before you were president and Donald Trump said the best he could do about the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare have some concept and some ideas um that issue was perilous for the Democrats in the first two years when it was being implemented because the change hadn't been fulfilled yet and change is scary when it comes to something so personal like your Healthcare it's one of the most popular issues in the country right now it has been a huge Boon for Democrats and again I'm going back to if you're a trump voter I'm getting incoming from some of the Trump voters I've met in my travels and they're defending him uh but the Republican strategists they're not surprised uh because they know Trump and they know he takes the baate but they're really disappointed that he didn't have answers on substantive policy questions to your point about immigration that on what should be his issue he took the baate and was talking about conspiracy theories and other things and on policy proposals that matter to the people who will settled the election he had nothing to say you know I think she showed up as herself she is a prosecutor she can prosecute the case she is not afraid to hold people accountable that is how she started her career and did just that and she laid some breadcrumbs in her opening statement talking about you're going to hear a lot of lies and every time she tripped him up a little bit she didn't then try and respond to him she just said see what I I told you I told you what you were going to get I'm I'm keeping them honest um she also helped turn the page when she said um you're not running against Joe Biden that was a subtle reminder for Americans for the last two years that said they didn't want that rematch and the last time they watched the debate it was a rematch and she was like guess what folks I'm here here's an alternative here's a path to uh the the future and the final thing I say is that I'm texting with some folks who are doing dial testing focused groups during this debate undecided voters in Georgia first the gender gap is massive it's about a 20 30 point gender gap on her responses but Trump's one of Trump's worst answers was his response to co and that was really when he started to unsp spiral and unravel and he could get back on trap I mean say what you want friends but she nailed it tonight okay now now from the now from the other side the other America the other America right the right America so John I I I agree that she passed the test does she look presidential did she do a good job up there she she did pass that test but she was very light you know you're you're complaining about Trump saying you don't have details on on your plan no details provided on anything here but for her she was she was very good at kind of rattling off her two-minute answers but never really answered the questions I think red America will look at this and say I mean I I see it in the tweets I never thought I'd say this but CNN did such a great job on the debate in being fair where ABC was not fair this was this was a two two three onone at times versus Trump they were demanding Trump be very specific on answers but KLA Harris when asked about about her her values changing and and having to articulate the differences of why she was she you know she was for reparations not for reparations she said they listed a very long list and she said I'll get to each of those and then she didn't get to any of them I would be curious to see the time who had more time because my sense was that Donald Trump was given more time I don't know but I'm just saying Anderson but my my point is not time my point is there was not a demand David Mir didn't say well Madame Vice President are you going to answer that question or he did do that with Trump he there was more aggressive followup on the Trump questioning than there was on isn't that sort of the responsibility of the candidate but David when when it's supposedly this is supposedly a neutral territory right and when the moderators have their thumb on the scale Republican voters are going to watch think I think on those I think it was two very specific questions like yes or no do you is there anything you regret about you know January 6 no answer well then how about this how about this when she when she was pressed and I thought this one particularly disgusting for me when she was pressed out Afghanistan she didn't say yeah I regret that 13 young men and women died there and I regret that I did not in the three and a half years as vice president meet with their I mean she didn't say that and nobody followed up on that and that is that is disgusting to me I look I I agree with David that you're going to hear some carping from Republicans about you know this wasn't a debate it was a trial and there were three prosecut definitely going to hear that but it is a little hard to complain about the riffs when you're not making your own jump shots exactly exactly and and the first 15 minutes of this debate he won the questions were on the economy he had it right he had it right on inflation even on the Tariff question I I think he had it right and then inexplicably on immigration that's where she derailed him and from that point forward she basically dictated the flow now in the closing statements when he said you've been there for three and a half years why haven't you done it that really should have permeated that's his best argument it really should have permeated everything she she peppered all of her answers with I have a plan I have a plan he should have retorted every time you've been there that seems like the only thing they worked out in ADV like that he had sort of in his mind okay this is something we're going to say but but look she she she did not put a lot of meat on the bones I agree she passed the competency test she did tell some of her own lies and she and she left some some things out there but overall she dictated the flow I want to go to Caitlin Collins in the debate spin room with Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro Kayla yeah thanks Anderson I'm here and it is timely given we are talking with the Pennsylvania Governor Josh fer about how Taylor Swift just came out and endorsed K Harris I know that you were claiming Taylor Swift claim Taylor Swift the Burks County native but you're we're here in Philadelphia watching this debate you were just watching it what were your main takeaways of how vice president Harris did coming into this because there were main qu big questions about how she would Fair on that debate stage you know Kaylin I think we spoke a few weeks ago and I expressed to you that I was a little bit worried the American people had a little bit of brain fog about Donald Trump they didn't remember the chaos when he was in office I think KLA Harris wiped out that brain fog and reminded people of the chaos of Donald Trump reminded them that he ripped away people's fundamental freedoms particularly the freedom for millions of women across this country to just make decisions over their own body she reminded them that here in Pennsylvania he wants to take away Health Care from 1.2 million of my fellow pennsylvanians she reminded him that he really has no plan on the economy and she reminded him just how reminded people just how nonsensical he is how divisive he is his rhetoric seeks to create others in our society and divide people instead of lifting everybody up and I thought she made clear she wants to be a president for all Americans laid out her vision laid out her plans and I thought she had a great night a lot of it seemed designed to to try to get under Trump's skin I mean she was talking about his crown sizes she was talking about his former officials who are now criticizing him she brought up January 6 in all of these moments and he did seem to take the bait even Trump advisers were were saying that to me was that the Str y going into this debate for your party well look only KL Harris knows what her strategy was on this but I will tell you he took the bait because he's completely self-centered he only cares about himself and so instead of just ignoring a comment about crowd siiz instead focusing on the needs of the crowd the needs of the people that he was talking uh to he could only focus on himself he is someone who is so self-absorbed that he can't possibly do a good job for the American people she's still been underwater in latest polling in your home state I mean she's been doing better in Michigan and Wisconsin than she has in Pennsylvania but still struggling a bit and what we saw from polls that voters wanted to know more about her they still had questions about her obviously Donald Trump is a pretty well-known quality quantity she obviously made the case against Donald Trump tonight but do you think she laid out enough of her own plans in detail for example on on how to end the war that's happening in Gaza she talked about working around the clock but but no specifics on on that thought she laid out comprehensive plans both on domestic and international policy and every visit every rally everything she does going forward she'll continue to flesh that out I I thought she had a really good night and I thought she laid out what she needed to for the American people understand this is one piece of the larger effort to win not just here in Pennsylvania but in other states as well and I thought she had a good night as for Pennsylvania look understand um it's always close here 2016 it was 44,000 votes that divided the two candidates 2020 was 880,000 votes about a percentage or less I don't know but we're no stranger to close elections the good news is kamla Harris understands that to pick up that last yard or two here in Pennsylvania is tough but you got to show up this is still a retail State and so she's showing up to places like Beaver County this week she'll be in wilbar she's going to places that quite frankly often get ignored by national candidates by showing up she's not only able B to lay out her plans but she shows a level of respect to the good people of Pennsylvania Governor Josh air I want to hand it over to Jake who also has a question for your fellow Pennsylvanian who knows Taylor Swift first of all uh first of all well that's right Taylor Swift actually originally from right near the Reading Phillies right you hear I'm not uh but Governor first of all the Phillies beat Tampa Bay oh he's not hearing okay go ask him this should the Harris campaign focus should should the Harris campaign focus more on the independent voters in Erie or the Republican women in the CER counties around Philly if if they had to choose he asked I believe if the Harris campaign should focus more on Independent Women in Erie or on moderate Women Voters in the other surrounding counties was that it Jake no no on on on Independent voters in in the Eerie area or republican women in the collar County or republican women and sure look Jake I I'll tell you uh everywhere in Pennsylvania matters particularly if this election's going to come down to just tens of thousands of votes I think you understand that David Urban on your panel certainly understands that there are a whole lot of people in the Philadelphia suburbs if you look at the suburbs as sort of its own entity it's more than two times the size of the city of Philadelphia so there's a lot of Voters there a lot of people to talk to and I know that the vice president's going to be spending a lot of time in the Philadelphia suburbs I also know that going to Erie is important as well take that from me a governor has been there many many times I think um our soon to be vice president Tim Walls was in Erie just last week that's critical as well but you got to show up you got to let folks ask you questions you got to let your tires get kicked and you got to show the good people of Pennsylvania you care about their neighborhoods and I know KLA Harris is going to do that all right Governor Josh F thank you for that Jake uh back to you thank you so much you know one of the things that's so interesting about tonight as opposed to the interview you did with vice president uh Harris was that a week ago I don't even know what it was days AG anyway you asked her about the racial comments When Donald Trump said that she never identified as black before I mean it's nonsense it's a lie whatever right she wouldn't even talk about it right tonight she ran through the Litany of Donald Trump's racist history from being sued by Nixon's uh housing department or Department of lb labor for not um renting to Black tenants to the Central Park 5 to birtherism etc etc I mean and again he took the bait every every single time he's literally there defending the indefensible in terms of his calling for the death penalty for the Central Park 5 but my point is she actually discussed it I don't think that she was waiting for a bigger audience you know 100 million people watching tonight or whatever I think that she that Trump continues to make inroads with black men and she felt like she probably had to staunch some of the bleeding on on that issue I think both can be true um I I thought her response to to my question was you know same old stuff next question she was ready to say something pithy and kind of the back of the hand like the blowoff and and move on but in the back of my mind I wondered if she was holding her uh her best stuff for for this to be with him on the debate stage so but I think that could be also true that she's making inroads with black men what what do you think I thought she said it because his response was he didn't care right he didn't care about the race or she can be whatever it is she wants to be which essentially was not only condescending and patronizing but also demonstrably accurate based on the statements that she actually laid out as to his concern for race and gender and Beyond I think that she was waiting to address that particular moment in a way not to choose her audience but to respond to what he had to say and I think the idea of her talking about her race and her gender which are both quite obvious to the American voter the American people I think in many ways that is an attempt for him to try to bait her to suggest that that is Trump over her qualifications her skills her value ads as a contributing member of the administration as a senator as an AG and Beyond and I think she's cognizant of the way in which America also views women of color in positions of power and I think that she was waiting for the opportunity to address a specific claim as opposed to what do you think about race and racism it also felt to me like there were some really key parts of it that she laid down there for Trump to pick up and then he just went and picked them up like that he defended to your point he defended his uh false accusations against the Central Park 5 he literally did not have to do that but he decided to do it he he also then went down a rabbit hole on Charlottesville I mean it's useful to the campaign to have Trump revisit all of the most unpopular parts of his history and his personality and his attitude and his lack of remorse that is a useful thing more so than her defending her own race and racial identity which honestly she she barely did I mean she did it very briefly and then she just created a scenario in which Trump just went down a rabbit hole that uh was was set for him that was the honestly the whole debate in a nutsh I was going to say it happened over and over again uh on the issue of 2020 and reli gating that uh I talked to a top Aid this weekend who said uh he wants to do it uh he knows he shouldn't uh he's been told that being forward looking is is a much better strategy for Success which I took to mean he'll probably do it you know despite our best you know what he did do it can we talk about Taylor Swift yeah let's talk about this for people has it been mentioned on our area I think yes with the governor Shapiro give it a more fome report Taylor Swift on Instagram uh endorsed uh the Harris walls ticket um she says she's doing it because Harris quote fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to Champion them I think she is steady-handed gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we're led by cman not chaos I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of runny May Tim Walls who's been standing up for lgbtq plus rights IVF and a woman's right to her own body for decades she goes on to say I've done my research I've made my choice your research is all yours to do interestingly she signs it with love and hope Taylor Swift childless cat lady an illusion to uh Senator JD Vance Donald Trump's running mate uh in ing Democrats uh as childless cat ladies and she was holding a cat in that photo the name of the cat I've been reliably informed is Olivia Benson Olivia well one of her cats was Olivia Benson I cannot confirm that the cat she was holding in that picture is is is Olivia B but I I guarantee you I guarantee you we will we will hear from many many swifties out there but let's just talk about what this means um what does it mean what is the significance of a celebrity endorsement it's not just a celebrity one of the biggest celebrities in the world the biggest celebrity in the world but it's not just that she's a celebrity she has people who are I mean like Swift lists I mean there are people who are young people young women who might not already be engaged in uh in politics who read and listen to every single thing that she says and love her and if she makes a difference even on the margins in a race like this that is a huge difference this was the this was the endorsement that the Harris campaign they were hoping for more than anything else no one will ever say no to a Taylor Swift endorsement I I 100% agree with that I think it's significant to all it is always significant to have the most powerful force in pop culture on your side the one contrarian view I will say is that in this moment the thing the Harris campaign needs perhaps the most is to figure out how to reach men the they they've got to figure it out here in Pennsylvania they've got to figure out how to reach black men and I'm not sure Taylor Swift helps them with that it's a totally different ball game that Taylor Swift is in but they've got to figure that part outa Travis Kelsey on the other hand maybe if Travis Kel comes around we'd be having a different conversation but I I think that it's just important to remember that especially in this Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that is um that that is just it's a give and take here where you you gain some and you lose some and she really needs to start gaining I don't want to rush us off the Taylor Swifty discussion and we but I do want to there is another piece of news which is that the uh Harris campaign put out a release and has challenged Donald Trump to another debate that had been somewhat in doubt and they say we're ready for another debate let's have it my guess is after the vice presidential debate in October but they're ready for round two so CBS is doing the vice presidential debate and I think NBC is supposed to do the uh the next presidential debate lock down confirmed but that put an offer on the can I just correct something before we move on fully from from Taylor Swift oh boy uh the cat's name is Benjamin Button okay okay well can I just say one thing though that I saw when I talk about Taylor switch endorsement that she is very clearly showing people that Reproductive Rights is on the ballot very much so she talked about in that actual statement about her research about Tim Walls the governor and his work with this particular area and so for those who think that roie Wade is an invisible ink on the 2024 ballot it very much is in a Sharpie pen and that's why kamla Harris's dissection of her references to what a voter would want was so important in the Reproductive Rights conversation let's get a fact check uh now of the debate CNN senior reporter uh Daniel Dale was listening closely to both candidates Daniel what stood out to you Jake what stood out was that this was a staggeringly dishonest debate performance from former president president Trump just lie after lie on subject after subject by my preliminary count Jake Trump made at least 33 false claims 33 by contrast by again a preliminary count vice president Harris made at least one false claim though she added at least a few misleading claims and a few more that lack key context I think a lot of Americans say well all politicians lie no major presidential candidate before Donald Trump has ever lied with this kind of frequency a remarkably large chunk of what he said tonight was just not true and this wasn't like little exagger ation political spin a lot of his false claims were untethered to reality on abortion saying every Democrat wanted Ro V weade overturn though actually more than 80% of Democrats supported row on crime saying it's through the roof though it's actually sharply down since early 2023 it's now lower than it was since Trump left office on Healthcare saying he's the one who saved Obamacare the law he actually repeatedly tried to overturn on KLA Harris herself saying that a Howard University grad Black Law Students Association president had claimed that she wasn't black at one point Frank I don't have enough time here to run through each specific Trump false claim I urge people to go to our CNN website or our app to read our team's detailed fact checks on this and a whole bunch more of the people that live there this is not only false I think it's fair to call this odious this for people who have not been online in the last couple days this claim about uh migrants Haitian migrants in Springfield Ohio eating people's pets originated with a Facebook post that attributed the claim to a neighbor's friend friend's daughter uh so you know a thirdhand broken telephone kind of thing the City of Springfield and the Springfield police say there are no credible reports of this happening and even JD Vance the vice presidential candidate who himself had promoted these claims acknowledged this morning that the quote rumors might turn out false although he still encouraged people to spread these cat memes now I'll note that Trump himself added dogs to the equation they had not even been part of these viral nonsense rumors before now let's look at a one false claim that vice president Harris did make about the economic situation that the Biden Harris Administration was left by Trump let's talk about what Donald Trump left us Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression and what we have done is clean up Donald Trump's mess so the Biden Harris Administration was not actually left the worst unemployment since the Great Depression they were left a 6.4% unemployment rate in January 2021 that was certainly elev ated by recent standards pretty high but it was significantly down from the 14.8% level it reached early in the pandemic so it was already improving uh at the time the Biden Harris Administration took office and that 6.4% level was the highest since the Great Recession so in the last 20 years not going back decades further Anderson Daniel thanks very much uh a lot a lot to go through we appreciate it um one other thing on the the Taylor Swift endorsements interesting in her statement another thing she mentioned she said recently I was a m aware that AI of me falsely endorsing Donald Trump's presidential run was posted to his site it really conjured up my fears around Ai and the danger of spreading misinformation brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election a as a a voter interesting that she's citing Donald Trump or somebody in the campaign I or I don't know where that site was but a trump related it's another another self-owned I mean they were really dumb to bait her uh because you know she was standing on the sidelines we were hoping she might come out but you know they keep doing dumb stuff on this campaign the stuff around eating animals and cats is pissing everybody off they just they just pulled Taylor Swift into the into the fight uh this is a a very very disastrous night for Donald Trump can I give a quick shout out to JD Vance who introduced into the bloodstream the childless cat lady um that now the mo one of the most powerful celebrities on the planet is using to endorse against Trump and Vance he also was the you know potential future vice president who tweeted out this lie about immigrants eating pets which was now go on a debate stage tonight this guy has been a disaster from the outside I'm biased I worked for Mike Pence but he brought people into the fold this person runs people out of the fold and he is steering Donald Trump to his absolute worst instincts which KLA Harris was able to exploit every single time and you say he was guilty of a feline I just want yet not that yet sorry so so Daniel Dale was doing some fact checking I just want to fact check a little bit here it's not necessarily you know 100% cross the line but when KL ha said that there aren't you know men and women serving in war zones in this Administration let's not forget tonight is in every night there are young men and women from America serving In Harm's Way they may not be in active War zones but there are men and women serving In Harm's Way all around this globe protecting all of us here at this table so let's all keep them in our prayers tonight remember that they may not be in war zones but they're still In Harm's Way and their parents and loved ones are very concerned about it and let's not diminish it anyway you know I think the debate I mean there were so many moments it took a very strong pivot in a direction towards sorry KL Harris is speaking let's listen it kind of was but we have 56 days to go and guys we're still the underdogs in this race it's tight we have got to win Pennsylvania and we are going to win Pennsylvania and it is because of you it is because because of you who have signed up who have volunteered you are organizing you're helping us to email and text and knock on doors and talk to your neighbors and your friends and here's the thing about the spirit of our campaign it is people driven I'm back here uh and me Mark Stewart on Marketplace Asia Sunday on CNN I'm Sal abdulaziz in London and this is CNN we're back with our breaking news coverage of the Harris Trump presidential debate awaiting reaction from our focus group of Pennsylvania voters and from our instant poll of debate Watchers Nationwide but right now uh let's go inside the spin room where we find Caitlyn Collins and I think Donald Trump himself is in the spin room Caitlyn I'm not sure if you can hear me but uh Donald Trump is in the spin room that is generally not considered a sign of a candidate thinking he had a good night uh or she had a good night when they go to the spin room to clean up what they just did and try to create new headlines or maybe jerk store some answers yeah Jake of course you know this was after the CNN debate there was a rumor Trump may come into the spin room he did not ultimately come in he is across the room from us now talking to reporters right now about the debate it's a little bit hard to hear him but we have sitting with us his running mate Senator JD Vance of Ohio who has also been watching that debate uh Jake was just talking about what it means when a candidate comes into the spin room after a debate is that a sign of a good debate or a bad debate in your view look I think with President Trump it's not a sign of either frankly I do think that he had a great debate um we can sort of hear the the the background noise here but look I I think with President Trump he had to be sort of talked out of coming to the spin room after the first debate CU he really wanted to and my guess is that he really wanted to come then he really wanted to come now this time it worked out and look he loves to talk to reporters because he loves to talk to the American people and I think it's been a consistent theme of his campaign is going any where going into hostile or friendly media talking to people answering questions and trying to make his case he's going to keep on doing that whatever the format did tonight go how you wanted it to go in terms of Harris clearly trying to get under his skin talking about crowd sizes talking about former officials like John Kelly and Mark esper and others I mean I heard from some Trump advisers who said he took the the debate too much do you believe that no look I think what we saw from KLA Harris was a lot of platitudes it was a lot of plans that had no real substance behind them and no real Precision behind them and what is most interesting and it's really the sort of microcosm of this entire race is KLA Harris has a record Donald Trump has a record Donald Trump is proud of his record and is running to it KLA Harris is running away from a record and pretending that somehow her term as president is going to be radically different from her term as vice president but she can't actually articulate why and in fact to the extent that she articulates it at all it's by running away from positions that she clearly held just a few years years ago or even a few weeks ago so why didn't Trump push her more on that because that is what we hear from you every day on the campaign Trail is talking about her reversals he did not really talk about why haven't you done what you're saying you'll do until his closing statement do you think he should have done that sooner well I think he did I mean he did it in the closing statement he also really hammered her on her inconsistencies right this is a person who said she wanted to ban fracking now she say she doesn't she wanted to defund the police now she said she doesn't she wanted a secure border I thought he really did actually on three issues in particular I think he was very focused on hammering KLA Harrison's in inconsistencies with her record what she says Now versus what she said even a few weeks ago in some cases it was on the border it's on fracking and it's on defund the police that was clearly what he's most focused on I think it's not surprising because those are three of the issues that the American people care the most about I mean look this is a person who was to the far left of her own party and now is trying to pretend that she's effectively Donald Trump my favorite line of the night is when he said she's going to Don a magac cap and pretend that she agrees with me on everything I think the American people are too smart to be fooled by kamla chameleon acting to be somebody that she's clearly not yeah she kind of smirked when he said that he was going to send her one on abortion though Trump was asked if he would veto a National Abortion ban you have said that he would he said that the two of you have not talked about that that you weren't talking for him have the two of you not talked about that so we haven't talked about a veto but it's clear that Donald Trump doesn't believe in a National Abortion ban he said that his policy is to let the states decide majority of abortion policy in this country and so I think that really it's a difference of semantics he thinks it's absurd to even talk about vetoing a piece of legislation that has no chance of being brought I think it's a totally reasonable point but again the the main substantive issue is Donald Trump believes that abortion should be a state policy and kamla Harris fundamentally thinks that abortion should be funded by taxpayers right up to the moment of birth and I it was interesting that the ABC fact Checkers or the moderators who frankly were just helping kamla Harris in the debate they said that no state supports abortion up to the moment of birth her own running mate has supported legislation that would remove the requirement that doctors provide life-saving care to babies who survive box abortion so I I think his point is Democrats are the real radicals on this issue and whatever cover the moderators provided the truth is the truth and their record's pretty out there on this question specifically Trump could have said yes he would veto a National Abortion ban why did he not take the opportunity to do so when you know how important abortion is to so many voters well because I think he e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e to take that risk were you leaning towards the former president coming in tonight probably and did you vote for him in 2016 or 2020 I did so decision made there what did you think as to who I would vote for in this election um I strongly felt camela was more optimistic more respectful um I thought she had plans that she um tried to describe in the minutes worth of time that she had um I mean they really were limited with their time so um I don't know I just felt more strongly for her as opposed to her opponent I want to talk about some of the moments of the debate because uh as we told you guys before the debate each of these individuals had a dial and if they turn the dial to the right then they felt positive about what they were Hearing in that moment if they turned it to the left they felt less so they felt negative about what they were hearing we could track that throughout the debate we're to show you a couple of moments where you saw the biggest movement towards positive direction for both of those candidates you will see the lines at the bottom of the screen and you will see that movement as the sound we play you plays out we're going to start with this because they're radical the Democrats are radical in that and her vice presidential pick which I think is a horrible pick by the way for our country because he is really out of it but her vice presidential pick says abortion is the ninth month is absolutely fine he also says execution after birth it's execution no longer abortion because the baby is born is okay and that's not okay with me hence the vote Trump abortion bans that make no exception even for rape and incest which understand what that means a survivor of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body next that is immoral and one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body and that sound obviously that moment was a critical moment uh not just for the debate on one of the critical issues of this campaign on the issue of Reproductive Rights and abortion but it was also one that garnered significant reaction from our Focus Group which I want to ask about right now for those of you who responded positively to vice president Harris's answer tell me why I yeah please um I responded positively to her answer because um I do struggle with the abortion issue and I don't know that she and I agree but I don't know that um like she said that the government should be in charge of people's decisions and I um think that there the when she was talking about situations of rape and incest um I think that those happen more than we think that they do and I just I don't know I just felt um her impassion response and that she would carry it out and that resonated with you in the moment yes it did who else had a positive response go ahead please I felt like it was her most genuine and passionate that I saw her pretty pretty much throughout it um I didn't necessarily agree with what she was saying but my favorable reactions were because it was nice to see the passion and believability that she stands behind and then have something to gauge more of what she says on since she hasn't spoken a lot solidly about a lot of issues and I think what's been interesting again following how you guys were tracking the debate which is a fascina experience and I should know we nobody in this room has been listening to the postgame coverage nobody in this room has been listening to the analysis we've actually all been talking amongst ourselves and it's been a really great conversation um there was another critical moment and this was Donald Trump's best moment based on your guys responses and it was when he was discussing Afghanistan listen we were getting out we would have been out faster than them but we wouldn't have lost the soldiers we wouldn't have left many Americans behind and we wouldn't have left we wouldn't have left 85 billion worth of brand new beautiful military equipment behind and just to finish they blew it the agreement said you have to do this this this this this and they didn't do it they didn't do it the agreement was was terminated by us because they didn't do what they were supposed to do so that was the former president talking about the Afghanistan withdrawal where 13 US service members were killed in that cas chaotic process you're a veteran yes sir uh there are obviously personal feelings here as well that answer and it's been an issue that he's talked about constantly on the campaign what stood out to you for it when I first heard that we were abandoning or we are withdrawing from Afghanistan and the the way it was happening I had my Kennedy moment it was very similar to when we decided to invade Iraq back under President Bush and when I saw that we were leaving that amount of high-tech equipment in the hands of our enemy and later that that day or later that week I saw on the news where them celebrating with our guns in their hands I realized what a travesty that was a and the loss of money in that that we abandoned when we left plus the very bullets that we left there that they were shooting as us at us as we flew away into planes we have a lot more to get to with this group we're going to get to them uh in a moment we're going to keep talking here but in the meantime Anderson I want to toss back to you all right Phil thanks so much we're about to get a read from Americans Nationwide on which candidate won tonight the first results of our exclusive instant poll of debate Watchers that's coming plus Caitlyn Collins just caught up with [Music] source we are live in mtown Philly breaking down the historic and fiery first debate between vice president Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump it began with a somewhat awkward moment for perhaps a handshake initiated by the Vice President followed by 90 minutes of tense exchanges Harris often forcing Trump on the defensive he took the bait every time as they sparred over some of the biggest issues in this election including immigration and abortion and the economy what the Wharton School has said is Donald Trump's plan would actually explode the deficit 16 Nobel laurates have described his economic plan as something that would increase inflation and by the middle of next year would invite a recession you just have to look at where we are and where we stand on the issues and I'd invite you to know that Donald Trump actually has no plan for you because he is more interested in defending himself than he is in looking out for you that's just a sound bite they gave her that to say look I went to the Wharton School of finance and many of those professors the top professors think my plan is a brilliant plan it's a great plan as the debate continued vice president Harris repeatedly appeared to get under former president Trump's skin as she tried to knock him off message even mocking something quite close to Trump's heart his campaign rallies and the size of them I'm going to actually do something really unusual and I'm going to invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies because it's a really interesting thing to watch you will see during the course of his rallies he talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter he will talk about windmills cause cancer and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you you will not hear him talk about your needs your dreams and your and your desires she said people start leaving people don't go to her rallies there's no reason to go and the people that do go she she's busing them in and paying them to be there and then showing them in a different light so she can't talk about that people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics that's because people want to take their country Back the Night capped uh by some breaking news welcome by the Harris walls campaign Taylor Swift uh formerly endorsing Harris and walls for president and vice president the first results of our instant poll of debate Watchers have just come in and David challan is going to join us now to break it all down David tell us more yeah Jake and as you noted this is a poll of debate Watchers this is not a poll uh that represents the overall population although in partisan breakdown it it is pretty close to what uh the overall registered voter population looks like in the country uh but it is a poll of those people that watched the debate so just keep that in mind uh as we get to these results our first result here in our exclusive flash poll who won the debate the overall number here overwhelmingly kamla Harris did I'm going to look at my email here 63% you see there on your screen say kamla Harris won the debate only 37% say Donald Trump won the debate and that is quite different than the expectations going into this among this group of debate Watchers uh in this poll we asked folks going into the debate who do you expect to win the debate well it was 5050 50% expected Harris 50% expected Trump to win the debate that was before the debate and we just showed you where it ended up afterwards 63% to 37% and take a look at this Jake this is a complete reversal from what we saw in June compare these numbers to Biden in in June you see that it was 67% to 33% 2/3 thinking Trump won only a third thinking in one a complete reversal in just a few months as this race has completely changed so too has the assessment of debate Watchers about the Democrat and Republican debate performances this 2024 presidential election Jak all right David challan and and while no doubt the this debate will not be quite as consequential as the last one uh it it does seem as though uh danab bash that the at least according to the instance polls of debate Watchers um people think that KLA Harris resoundingly won an defied expectations based on what people thought beforehand and afterwards um as uh as David was saying we have to be careful with instant polls and what is really going to matter is how this sinks in and ripples through uh the pool very small but important pool of undecided voters but I think the only thing that you need to know about how how Donald Trump realizes that this went was to see his um behavior and performance the fact that he came into the spin room and he was not very happy and citing a bunch of numbers of polls that he said he won no clue where those numbers came from and he was asked about it in the spin room and didn't give an answer but I I also think you know Harris there there were some risks here for her tonight and she had a lot of work to do and and I'm thinking about earlier when we were talking and I um was struck recently in the last couple of weeks just watching Trump in his normal Campaign World on the stump in interviews and he is progressively slowing down he's progressively not able to really um even make his own normal kind of cases that he would make about all sorts of issues and that was on display tonight I mean she she was really helped by Trump just not really being able to kind of take it to her on virtually anything and in a way her biggest weakness might have been that um when you give her something that she's not prepared for she may or may not be able to address it but Trump never did that he only gave her things that it would be very obvious that he would say on the debate stage and I think that's one of the main reasons that she was able to just kind of quite impressively actually take a lot of preparation and just spit it right out on that debate stage almost exactly probably the way her advisers wanted her to and Trump just wasn't Nimble enough to even respond to that he he you know dove into his little pit of grievance and and and he's aging and it shows it it's showing on the debate stage it's showing on the campaign one of the things that that presidential debates have done over the years is that T at times when people have had doubts about a candidate usually the Challenger in this race You could argue they're both incumbents are both Challengers and it it has erased the stature Gap in 1960 Nixon was the the vice president the criticism of John Kennedy was that he was Too Young Too callow too inexperienced after that first debate that went away because people thought at the very least that that Kennedy showed that he stood up and was the Ken Nixon's equal and perhaps his Superior 1980 uh Jimmy Carter a lot of concern it was Ronald Reagan too big a risk and after that debate people were reassured they didn't they didn't like Carter particularly and they were reassured we can take this jump uh in into Reagan in the New York Times poll over the weekend three times as many people said they needed to know more about kamla Harris than said that about Donald Trump and I got to think for a lot of that 28% of Americans that they were reassured by what they saw tonight so I think that it it it it gives permission to support her for people that had doubts well there's two things I noticed one was the word that Senator JD Vance used the word platitudes when he talked to Caitlyn Collins about how he describes the ability of Vice President Harris to articulate her platforms it's what is demanded of the incumbent versus what was actually provided by a former incumbent she's expected to talk in very granular detail Trump had very many bald assertions and yet he believes that he was successful in that endeavor nonetheless the other issue is this important idea of managing expectations she has described herself from the very get-go since she's actually taking the top of the ticket as the underdog in part because Democrats do not want a performance like this to have people believing there's no reason to lean in they can lean out everything's in the bag they know there is still the uphill battle of trying to overcome a number of factors so I think in many ways these are certain polls show you that even though this was a successful Endeavor I think arguably objectively for the vice president she still has to overcome this I can't tell what the language and coding it is to have her Define herself still no question that winning a debate is not the same thing as winning an election and there's still many days to go uh many miles to travel let's go now to to Kaitlin Collins and Kaitlin you just just caught up with former president Trump not generally seen as a baller move for a a debater to then go to the spin room afterwards what did he have to say yeah Jake he was in here he was speaking to reporters we grabbed him just for for a quick pide to get his reaction to how he personally thought the debate went the first question I asked him was something that I have been hearing from people inside Trump's orbit about him taking the bait when Harris was clearly trying to get under his skin a strategy we knew she was going to employ on the debate stage here's what Donald Trump told me about that some of your advisers are worried that excuse me that you uh took the bait from KLA Harris tonight what would you say great debate tonight this was my best debate we had a 92% rating in one poll we had an 86% rating in another we had 77% in another we had we won every one of the polls that came out tonight and there were quite a few of them you were asked if you would veto a National Abortion ban and you did not say yes or no what is your answer to that so all you have to do is check it it was a perfect answer on abortion and I've done a great job in that and I brought our country together thank you yes or no will you debate that was former president Donald Trump earlier as he was exiting the spin room joining me now South Carolina Senator Tim Scott a surrogate of the former presidents you heard Donald Trump there talking about the debate would you say that Donald Trump won this debate he had a very strong performance no doubt I thought the two moderators were absolutely biased and two things that that you walk away with number one we know who Donald Trump is four years of Donald Trump we had very low unemployment we saw 7 million jobs created two-thirds going to minorities into women we saw HBCU funding hit a record level and made the funding permanent we frankly saw research on siel anemia uh accelerated what we didn't see in this debate was who is KLA Harris we've seen her change her position time and time again and tonight we have no Clarity on her positions she's now far fracking when she was against it she now wants a border wall when she was against it the bordar herself certainly did not go to the border for three plus years she's had three years to tell the American people who she is and we still don't know who she is where does she stand on the number one issue the American people care about the economy inflation the cost of living we don't know well and does it bother you that Donald Trump won't say where he stands on a really important issue which is abortion and actually he's been very clear on the issue of abortion say yes or no tonight well here's what he said it is a state's issue the American people are solving that problem state by state by state exactly where the echo Chambers around the country wanted the issue what we did not hear was KLA Harris answer the question does she support abortions in the third trimester the seventh 8th and ninth month she refused to answer that question we have one candidates who is absolutely crystal clear that the voters in the states will make the decision roie weade is gone and one candidate who would not say I refuse to have late term abortions well she didn't say where she believed the Restriction should be she said she want to go back the weade which would allow for abortion up until the day of birth he say and he did not say which of course you know his R doesn't really happen but he would not say about vetoing a ban but the poll the debate overall and how it went CNN conducted an instant poll 63% of people said they thought Harris won 37% said that they thought Trump won going into this I know it was a conversation about focusing on policy versus the personal he got into the conversation again about Harris's race and saying that he read that moderators did you think he handled that effectively listen I'm a black man I think it's insulting to have a conversation uh who who I am or who who he is or who she is that that has been solved by the parents who birthed her so from my perspective what we should do is what the American people want us to do talk about them and their issue their future their challenges that they face today and the hopes that they have for their kids tomorrow as we focus on those issues the American voters will have Clarity on which candidate they want leading us for four years do you think Donald Trump did enough of focusing on the issues and not the personal tonight listen I think he did a really good job focusing on the primary issues that the American people care about starting with two number one the economy and number two the Border without any question we've seen the greatest the largest invasion of illegal immigrants crossing our Southern Border in my lifetime and in the history of the country from what I understand we also know that 70,000 Americans have died to fentol because of ports of entry and our Southern border and number three when you have hundreds of thousands of people coming from countries that are adversary adversarial to America we should assume we have Sleeper Cell in our country those are the issues the American people are talking about plus the economy and you're obviously a senator on Capitol Hill you were there when Donald Trump was in office the last time and he wanted to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act he was asked again about that tonight if he has a plan now to replace the Affordable Care Act he said I have the concepts of a plan do you know what that looks like well we've and what we know for certain with great certainty is that competition across state lines actually reduces the price allowing for small businesses to gather together and have Association plans we've seen that already work throughout the country that reduces your race by about 30% so what we already understand is that the framework that's been developing for a number of years that we haven't had a chance to implement would reduce the cost of health insurance and create greater access what we know about Obamacare is it's incredibly expensive even with Federal subsid ities so we still have a number of Americans a high percentage of Americans who are still un find Obamacare unaffordable because it is and we've seen those subsidies be expanded Senator Tim Scott thank you very much for joining us yes ma'am thank you Jake obviously a very busy evening here in the spin room tonight next we're going to get more reaction from our focus group of Voters from here in Pennsylvania we're digging into the moments that stood out to them from tonight's debate plus additional results from our instant poll much more ahead stay with us [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] 22 knots to win there they come get your cameras ready there it is wow that's a f so every single species play a very important role in the whole ecosystem why wouldn't we want our children to fall in love with nature we don't have much years to make a difference liter poaching pollution we need to fix that despite the damage we've done we still have a wonderful natural component don't give up let's do it you can make it for the people Help and Hope [Music] [Music] [Music] what on Earth is going on with the Republican party isn't this just a huge problem for the Biden campaign do you think that Russia is now winning in Ukraine does any of that give you pause what are the logistics around getting that much Aid how do regular Americans see all of this drama it is sad it is pathetic what can you tell us about the status of that investigation what would you do if you were president news night with Abby philli Tuesday through Saturday on CNN news happens fast and travels faster changing the world as we know it we'll connect you to what truly matters globally we your Bridge first move with Julia chat on CNN I'm Jeremy diamond in Tel Aviv and this is CNN the Harris Trump presidential debate in Philadelphia is now history and Americans are digesting what they heard and whether it's going to impact how they vote I want to get some more results from our post- debate instant polls our political director David challan is back with us David uh what else are you learning yeah Anderson this is a poll of debate Watchers not of the country overall or the electorate obviously uh but it's not that uh partisan in a partisan way different uh than what we see broadly among registered voters uh this is really interesting among the candidates favorable and unfavorable ratings take a look here at what we found before the debate Harris's favorable rating was at 39% after the debate among these debate Watchers her favorability rating went up six points to 45% Donald Trump actually ticked down two points among these debate watchers from 41% favorable to 39% favorable uh that's about roughly the same that's not a 2% tick down there is not huge but I do want to note kamla Harris's uptick driven a lot by independent voters she was minus 17 uh more unfavorable than favorable among these debate Watchers going into the debate and independent debate Watchers they were plus nine for her favorability coming out of the debate so a big movement change on her favorability with Independence take a look at when we asked debate Watchers about the confidence in the candidates to lead the country the ability to lead the country country and the confidence that uh debate Watchers have in that this is really interesting because even though she was the clear winner in the debate among debate Watchers take a look 32% say a lot of confidence in her in her ability to lead the country and 36% say that about him uh she's a little bit better among those who say some confidence uh in the ability to lead the country if you add the a lot and the sum together they're both at 54% um and so they're quite even on this score which I think is pretty uh interesting and then who had a better plan for solving the country's problems Harris won on this score among these debate Watchers as well 42% say Kamala Harris had a better plan for solving the country's problem that's compared to 33% who said Trump and look Anderson 22% one in five of debate Watchers says neither of these two had a good plan for solving the country's problem uh that not necessarily double haters here obviously but that seems to be a Target audience for both of these candidates to talk to and explain their plans to over the next8 weeks yeah interesting David jallan thanks so much joh King what do you make of those number well number one it tells you we enter the debate in a very close competitive race and we'll leave the debate in a very close competitive race however however Advantage Harris on a couple of very significant points uh David Chen noting that where she jumped up was among independent voters we knew coming into this debate that the largest audience of people the largest percentage of people who said they were open to changing their mind were people who self-identify if as Independents or as moderates so the middle of the American electorate uh the people who live in the suburbs the people who maybe voted for Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020 aren't you know incredibly partisan uh they're looking for Solutions they're looking for pragmatism so the fact that her movement was among Independents who had the better debate about solving the country's problem she came into the debate of a deficit with Trump on the economy it's a different question that question was solving the country's problems but it shows she made progress with people are you a president right that was her biggest challenge Nobody Knows the vice president whether it's Mike Pence or whether it's Dan Quail or whether it's El Gore you know you're trying to rise from Vice whether it's Joe Biden you're trying to rise from president to vice president you have to prove I'm ready for the first job uh it is clear it is clear that she cleared that bar tonight now that does not mean that she's not still in a very competitive race but if her progress tonight was among Independents now the question is can you carry that momentum forward we count votes eight weeks from tonight um still close still competitive but in an election that we all expect is going to be decided on the margins tonight anyway the question is can she hold it she moved the margins that matter you know uh that one that one graph of uh capability to lead the country the fact that they're basically dead even I mean think about where we were seven weeks ago would you have predicted that seven weeks later that kamla Harris and Donald Trump would be polling evenly Donald Trump a former president uh you know and what ever you think about him there is a presumption that goes with the fact that you were president that you know the job and so on you know so I I do think that she filled that uh she checked that box tonight she looked like a president on that stage there's not a lot of of elasticity in this electorate so I wouldn't expect huge movements here but this isn't going to be a race that's won that way it's going to be won incrementally she took an incremental step forward so so I'm a little bit surprised by that by those numbers because this is as good as it's going to get for KL Harris presumably I mean this was this was you know Donald Trump's presumably like worst nightmare that you could have if you're a trump suppor you watch this night you say he didn't talk about any of those kitchen table issues like like Alysa was talking about right it was grievances it was re remir not not windshield it was all the the bad stuff and yet he's still tied right we're still right there we're still neck and neck and it's going to come down again to the people in Erie County Northampton County mome County Michigan the question is are 50,000 people swayed in Michigan Wisconsin Pennsylvania were they swayed tonight are they going to be swayed the next eight weeks because that's what that's where they are those 50 to 75,000 and did those eat away as John points out are those Independents were those swayed enough to come over and stay there maybe maybe not but his iceberg is melting I'll tell you that like she she did well by herself you're right it's going to be clawing forward it's going to be clawing forward but you know he did a lot of stuff that was we haven't gotten to that's just horrible he wouldn't say that he wanted Ukraine to win you think about that it's a very easy thing to say that you want a a democracy that that that we've rallied the World Behind that frankly people in Pennsylvania Munitions being made there are going to help gas that's being fracked there is going to hell he wouldn't even stick up for the ukrainians in Pennsylvania when pennsylvanians are helping us win there this he did terrible he could he could have more clearly absolutely stated look I'm not I would not sign an abortion Bill if came across my desk he got into the nitty-gritty about not votes in the sen on abortion let's actually play what uh what what both of the candidates said on on the topic one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body I have talked with women around our country you want to talk about this is what people wanted pregnant women who want to carry a pregnancy to term suffering from a miscarriage being denied care in an emergency room because the healthc care providers are afraid they might go to jail and she's bleeding out in a car in the parking lot she didn't want that her husband didn't want that a 12 or 13-year-old Survivor of incest being forced to carry a pregnancy to term they don't want that what I did is something for 50 2 years they've been trying to get roie wade into the states and through the uh genius and and heart and strength of six Supreme Court Justices we were able to do that now I believe in the exceptions for rape incest and life of the mother I believe strongly in it Ronald Reagan did also 85% of Republicans do exceptions very important but we were able to get it and now states are voting on it it's the of the people now it's not tied up in the federal government I did a great service in doing it it took courage to do it and the Supreme Court had great courage in doing it and I give tremendous credit to those six justices you know I I thought that was probably one of her best responses in the debate um and what Donald Trump did that we didn't play there is in that response he threw people under the bus through his vice presidential candidate JD van saying we didn't talk about whether or not he would be to a national abortion ban he threw Kansas and Ohio under the bus he said those were liberal votes um last I checked Ohio my home state and Kansas are pretty red but that the American public are not actually where Donald Trump and the Republican Party want to go on abortion but what I think she also did was in this debate on abortion on many issues was you know I'm the coalition's person she talked to different parts of her Coalition we know women are going to be critical this is the first presidential since the fall of row we actually don't know if it's going to carry over I think it will still be a top of um the ticket issue but so Donald Trump talks about um Sor she went to a sorority party let me tell you as a as a person who is a part of a black sorority that was offensive to black people who know the history it's not a party it's it's a public service organization so she didn't go there and talk about it but she talked about you know the Central Park 5 when he baited her there she talked about Dick Cheney I know we probably all were like watching Dick Cheney and and chainy endorsed cuz we follow this every single day but some people probably didn't know he endorsed that speaks to those Republicans in Eerie Pennsylvania that you still talk to and then the independence showing again yet he can't be a mature adult and not scream when he gets upset about crowd size I I just want to go back to kayin Collins she's with Democratic senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut kayin yeah Anderson thank you so much we have Senator Murphy here we were obviously talking about the debate and how how everyone thought it went obviously it is clear vice president Harris was able to get under Donald Trump's skin she clearly was trying to do so by talking about his his crowd sizes and whatnot but the polling we've seen shows that a lot of undecided voters want to know more about her and her policies do you think she did enough to stake out ground on that for voters tonight I do and I I think she did that in two ways first she did talk about these specific policies whether it's her plan to invest in building more housing whether it's her work to try to increase tax credits for families with children she obviously endorses and supports the bipartisan border bill which would do a lot to fix the problems with the southern border but I also think there's probably a lot of Voters that you know just hadn't seen kamla Harris in a setting where she could look commanding where she could appear as a president and that's what she looked like tonight she was presidential she was commanding she was in charge of that stage so I think voters do want to hear more from her on policy specifics and I thought she did a good job of articulating how she's going to invest in the middle class grow the economy from The Middle out but I just thought she looked like a president and Donald Trump kind of looked like a puddle by the end of that debate there was only one president on that stage and it was KLA Harris and that probably answers some of the most important questions that voters have who don't know her that well there was a moment where where Donald Trump was talking on his assassination attempt on his life I want everyone to just listen to that moment obviously there was over almost two hours of of debate I just want everyone to listen to what Donald Trump had to say this is the one that weaponized not me she weaponized I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me they talk about democracy I'm a threat to democracy they're the threat to democracy with a fake Russia Russia Russia investigation that went no that moment there in the Middle where he said I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that people in your party have said about him what's your response to that well I think it's a deeply Reckless irresponsible thing to say that answer was in the context of a Litany of crimes that he had committed crimes that he believes he didn't commit that he's being pursued for uh because political uh political agenda of the president um the reality is is that it's been Donald Trump from the very beginning of his presidency that has celebrated and instigated violence in this country leading to the disastrous uh assault on the capital so I think the issue of violence and who instigates violence will likely be a big issue in this campaign but it has been Donald Trump consistently who has celebrated violence who's endorsed violence and who continues even in this debate to apologize for those that attacked the capital resulting in the death and injury of dozens of Law Enforcement Officers Senator Chris Murphy thank you for joining us in the spin room where everyone comes to to Hype their candidates uh it is obviously getting a little bit quieter in here Anderson now all right Kayla thanks we're going to take a quick break coming up we're going to hear more from our focus group of Voters in Pennsylvania including what they thought of that moment the former president accused migrants of eating pets we'll be [Music] back on her first mission HMS Majestic was sunk by a German ubo in May 19 195 weighing almost 15,000 tons and more than 100 m from Stern to Bow The Majestic has largely how the animal is moving and how you can move with the animal it's quite easy so for me racing I don't race to win if I win great obviously this is good um but I don't do it to win I do it because first and foremost it's fun and second I want people to see that that women we are strong we are confident and we can do things that that maybe men perceive that we cannot just in the last couple of years it's grown so much and I have no doubt that it's going to continue to grow do you think that our democracy is at risk we have to be very concerned this is a damning report for the president why do you think he's doing this and can he be talked out of it would Republican be willing to support this Aid package we need a functioning legislative branch are you willing to let people in the West Bank vote why do you think so many Republicans have downplayed this do you think he's guilty the lead with Jake Tapper tonight on CNN if you can keep your head when markets all around you are losing come together we will make sense of it all and what is more my friend you will be profitable for you are indeed watching Quest means business [Music] [Music] welcome to the beautiful [Music] shot beautiful shot and formula one is [Music] underway I'm Wolf Blitzer this is cm we're back in Philadelphia getting reaction to the Harris Trump presidential debate according to our exclusive instant poll of debate Watchers most viewers believe that it was a win for vice president Harris now let's hear again from voters in Erie Pennsylvania tucked in the Northwestern corner of this beautiful Commonwealth CNN's Phil mattingley is with our focus group in Erie Phil yeah it's a bellweather county Jake that every election Watcher will be paying attention to on Election night it's why we wanted to talk to the people behind us who came into this night undecided maybe leaning one way or the other but not officially knowing where they were going to vote their reactions to the debate itself tracked with what we saw from the instant pole nine out of the 13 said they thought the vice president won the debate we've been actually tracking their reaction from inside the debate we had dials that were showing whether they felt positive or negative we're going to show you a piece of sound right now from a particular moment that Drew a very specific reaction now where you see red lines that's a republican reaction where you see blue lines that's from a democratic reaction a purple line is independent you'll see them on the bottom of your screen and it's a moment that a lot of people are talking about watch in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there and this is what's happening in our country and it's a shame as far as rallies are concerned as far as the reason they go is they like what I say and the reason why we picked that sound out to ask our group about is one it definitely elicited a significant reaction as you could see in the lines below as you were watching that but also I received a number of questions from family members and Friends asking what this was actually all about which was also a response that you had when you were watching it correct correct I had not heard anything about it before so I thought it was just another one of these kind of crazy things that he comes up with uh that kind of turn me off I would say when we were talking about it beforehand you mentioned that it also kind of had it undertones or something that's right yeah what really bothers me about it is what I the underneath message I get from that as a pastor I hear kind of the uh dismissing the other keeping the other away giving bad Impressions about other people and I just I don't I don't buy that you know Jake what's been interesting talking to this group is again a number of them decided after watching the debate where they wanted to go some to the former president some to the vice president but also there's still a number of them that are undecided and I wanted to go to another Pastor on that Ry you mentioned when we were talking you have not made up your mind yet what are you going to be looking for in the next 50 plus days for more clarity and their decision making their policy uh they have both have some negative and positive uh response but I need more and so on my part only thing I can do is just pray and ask God to give me which one that he would like to be in the office and that's what I would go with yes yeah you as well yes me as well um I had came in and Clarity was one of the things that you know we had mentioned that we wanted that we were looking for in this debate we just didn't see that we didn't find that so we're looking for more information more facts things like that to help us decide from those of you that are here with the time we have left who believes that those types of answers will be coming do do you need to see a second debate what what would you like to we've talked to you had some really great points about the lack of Education policy in this debate itself what do you think needs to happen to get answers I think we need to hear more interviews I I think debates just don't cut it there's not enough time for people to really get into the specifics of what they can and can't do and there's no time to be factchecking at the same time I mean you got our our dials um our reactions to things but we don't actually know what's true and what's not without having the time to actually fact check things I think you know getting to see interviews and having journalists fact check them on the spot or you know um be able to follow up with question where we can actually understand what's going on like that's that's what I need that's what I need to know I I just want to know where they actually stand on things and not just hear pretty sound clips and want a second debate I I do want a second debate but what I would be interested in seeing in a debate is if you can focus on one or two questions don't put in a ton of questions have one or two and just have them stick to those so they can actually lay out what they would do because there's just not enough time with the you know 10 questions that are asked and I think we also and I haven't asked them this but have a firm commitment that they will all be coming back to stay very late into the night if we have a second debate so right yeah we're good on that now this was great uh very substantive consequential conversations going on uh one that I'm sure will continue uh for the days and months ahead back to you guys thanks so much Phil really appreciate it uh and let me uh resume with my panel here because Abby philli uh these voters a lot of these voters are calling for exactly what you discerned some of the democratic politicians in interviews were saying which is kamla Harris needs to talk more about the plans that she has for people and uh you know however well she did tonight yeah I mean listen carefully to people who support vice president Harris who are her allies just tonight uh after before after the debate they're all kind of saying the same thing uh she needs to be out there more she needs to to resolve those lingering questions that some voters have that voters in that focus group had and this idea that the campaign had that I've talked to a lot of their advisers about that she doesn't really need you know whatever the mainstream media this isn't about the mainstream media right this is about um how do you best Reach people who are searching for answers and and that last woman that we heard from in the focus group I think that's an important perspective that gets lost when there's a lot of spin about we're just going to go straight to the voters a lot of regular people understand that there's a role that is played when a a candidate sits in front of somebody who asks some questions and follows up to make sure that they have a clear understanding of what's going on and that hasn't happened she sat down with Dana but more needs to be done and I think you're starting to hear a lot of Democrats starting to say okay Now's the Time four weeks or eight weeks left and the polls are showing very clearly that voters want to know more about her and there's an opportunity there I I I think that the CNN instant poll speaks exactly to this point overwhelmingly people thought that she beat Trump but when it became the question of what who do you favor more how that stranger who do you think could run the country much more muted uh and I think that uh they do need to she opened the door tonight but I think she needs to come through that door she needs to explain herself uh more interestingly enough she seems to realize that cuz she has already heard Camp has said that they want another debate interestingly enough Trump was on Fox with Hannity Hannity said she wants a debate to you and he said why do I want another debate he said the only reason she wants it is because she lost tonight it's like a boxer who lost and wants a rematch uhhuh anyway uh coming up thanks Chris uh more from our instant pole of debate Watchers Nationwide did what they heard from the candidates tonight change their minds about who to vote for in November back in a moment and stay with us Harris Trump presidential debate is sitting the stage for the final 8 weeks until election day early reaction from voters suggesting vice president Harris may get a shot of momentum we've got another round of results from our instant poll of debate launchers David chellan has the numbers [Music] David yeah Anderson one of the questions we asked these debate Watchers is that classic question of who do you think uh cares about people like you if you will and take a look at uh these results from our instant poll who better understands problems facing people like you uh before the debate 39% said that about Harris 43% Trump and look at how that flips for Harris after the debate 43% of the debate Watchers say that she understands problems facing people like them 40% say that about Trump now this is margin of error stuff but you can see directionally that she made up some ground in that category that is not true when it comes to the economy and and this shows even though she won the debate overwhelmingly in the minds of the voters look at the economy here uh who would you who would better handle the economy is what we ask going into the debate before the debate 37% said Harris 53% Trump after the debate again margin of error stuff here but numerically she lost a little ground 35% said so after the debate that she would better handle the economy 55% said Trump and we know that is one of his strongest suits across the polling in this election and he seemed to hang on to that piece in this debate tonight according to our poll of debate Watchers and finally did the debate change your mind did the debate alter your presidential preference take a look at those bottom numbers 88% of Harris supporters said nope nothing here changed my mind only 78% of trump supporters said that uh you see there 177% of trump supporters said they would reconsider their choice 6% said of trump supporters that their mind has changed now we don't know how that's changed necessarily it's not necessarily to her but I just think it shows that bottom number that 78% 10% less than what Harris had of his supporters say it has no effect but that means you know 23% there or so 22% uh believe that this did Recons cause them to reconsider or change their mind of trump supporters that's a higher number than it is for Harris Anderson thanks Alissa do you think this I does this change anything moving forward now well listen kamla Harris on I counted four occasions useed the phrase there's more that unites us and divides us she made direct appeals to Independence to moderates she cited the Liz Cheney and Dick Cheney endorsements and was clearly trying to reach people who are disillusioned by Donald Trump they're a little tired of the chaos they may have thought they were better off four years ago but they don't like the general tone and tenor he at no point made that sort of ask to voters if I want your vote here's why you should consider being with me so I do think that there's some movement that you could see if she continues with that message going forward and her campaign has done something smart by already coming out and saying they're game for another debate a it means they know they won but they also know that it's going to put him on his heels he's going to look on the defensive if he doesn't end up agreeing to do one I mean the thing that wasn't reflected in that in that uh that one slide was where voters who had no preference are going to go and I think that's the real Focus there is a sliver of Voters it's small but decisive potentially who haven't chosen a candidate yet and have questions the question is did she help answer those questions tonight if there was one shortcoming in what I felt was a was a commanding performance probably her folks would have liked to hammer the economy even harder and I will say this uh back in 2012 when Barack Obama was running against Mitt Romney on the day that he won Mitt Romney won the category of who would who would best manage the economy but Obama won who would fight for people like you in the economy and I think that's what she's going for with her message you could hear that and how she delivered those kind of messages directly to camera she was speaking in the second person he was often speaking in the third Donald Trump would do this Donald Trump would do that and I think I'll be watching over the next couple of weeks does she do more interviews with whom what kind of formats how do they manage the social media of tonight and even for Trump how the surrogates are going to spend their time over the next couple of days are they still going to be mitigating something that is perceived to be a mess or are they going to are we going to see more people acting more aggressively on his behalf I think if you want to hang your hat on something for Trump it's the economic numbers I said I thought he won the first 15 minutes it was largely about the economy and so there's still a built-in belief by most voters that it's been mismanaged by Biden and Harris and so if you're Trump and you're trying to take something positive out of this it's that that built-in Vibe of they just didn't do a good job on it you have to understand that and not get away from it number two obviously millions of people watch this a lot of people didn't watch it and a lot of those people who didn't watch it and may see nothing about it are some of the people that Donald Trump's campaign needs to turn out the disengages they're not going to be persuaded by this that's still a big part of the Trump strategy and I don't think they'll be moved I think that's all the time we have in coverage of the Harris Trump presidential debate continues after this break look [Music] African voices Chang makers in association with glow unlimited when you think of African music you rarely think of a death metal [Music] band but here in bana the underground death metal scene is alive and thriving
