Hollywood Reporter called one of the biggest spec sales in quite a while the journal said the script was similar tonally and thematically to the films Die Hard 1988 and Air Force One 1997 in the following April Sony hired Roland Emerich as director Emerich began filming in July 2012 at the L City du Cinema in Montreal Quebec Canada cinematographer Anna Forester shot the film with a Alexa plus digital cameras in 2012 Sony competed with Millennium films who were producing Olympus Has Fallen also about a takeover of the White House to complete casting and to begin filming White House Down was reviews audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of a on and a plus to f scale Roth cornet ofine gave the film a score of six 510 concluding White House Down is a pretty silly rehashing of previously tread action movie territory but if you're willing to laugh along with or even at it it can be a highly entertaining Experience Andrew Chan of the film critics circle of Australia wrote I am not entirely sure whether I should be happy or sad that I laughed when someone got shot or bombed but such is the manner of how the film is played out Mark kermode of the Observer gave the film three fifth Stars writing that it at least has the good grace to laugh at itself as it rolls out the dingbat Daft action movie cliche is shub rupta of the Indian Express gave the film to five fifth Stars writing trouble is it goes on too long it has several climactic moments but every time you ready for the exit the film bounces back again for the next round Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian gave the film two five stars saying that real Thrills dependent on real believable Jeopardy are not on offer just cheerfully absurd spectacle and a little bit of humor White House Down gross $7 73.1 million in the United States and $32.32 5.4 million against a budget of $150 million the film made $24.8 million in North America during its opening weekend coming in below expectations and finishing fourth at the box office review of wh house down 2013 film you've got to give the HSPA award to director Roland Emer in his action thriller White House Down he's competing not just with a recent similarly themed Olympus Has Fallen but himself how to Trump your own signature scene in Independence Day a film in which an alien spaceship wipes out the home of the US president breaking out of the apocalyptic mode he's known for including destruction by climate change in the day after tomorrow and in 2012 he goes with Shameless but clever self- homage early into White House Down right around the time the Capitol building is destroyed a voice is heard just like in Independence Day this time it's an inside job aliens not required what with right-wing sociopaths white supremacists and assorted bureaucrats with nasty agendas right here in the Homeland the title also hits us subliminally is the White House really our house and how much does it hurt us when it's attacked in White House Down Channing totam plays John Cal a Capitol Hill Police Officer Afghanistan vet and divorce he can't make the grade of security guard for the president because he was a bit of a slacker as his secret service interviewer Maggie Gyllenhaal reminds him so it's a sad moment when he has to pick up his waiting daughter Emily Joey King skipping over the bad news he instead offers a White House Tour suddenly a paramilitary force commandeers the place and threatens to start World War Roman 3 wrong place right time for Cali as he becomes the de facto presidential protector after all though in the extreme Strat position of having to cover the president and rescue Emily when she has taken hostage regret is a great motivator I'd like to have one of these guilt driven Security Guys protecting me Clint Eastwood in in the line of fire 1993 who failed to save the life of John F Kennedy Olympus Has Fallen bodyguard Gerard Butler who did rescue the president but not the first lady Channing toam specifically for every sexiest man alive reason plus his dance trained agility and his desire to impress and bond with his estranged daughter in other near clone comparisons you can't help but think the Die Hard franchise with its alienated kids as in the latest Die Hard Emily even calls her Father John for a while before breaking through to Dad the dieh Hard franchise has so run its course that the only real pleasure left is finding out how much punishment mlan can take Cal doesn't get as brutalized by by battle as John mlan though he takes many knocks in White House Down the Weiss cracks are spread out todam being too much of a sweetheart type to deliver all of them the evil computer genius who gains control of nored squeals don't touch my toys when the president and Cal commandeer the presidential limo quite a car chase upgrade and after Sawyer remembers the back seat will not be appropriate for riding shotgun he starts shooting that's something you don't see every day says an amazed Aid watching from afar the script by James Vanderbilt of The Amazing Spider-Man is hip bad enemy boys can be diabetic a White House tour guide a truly witty turn by Nicholas right begs the Marauders to be careful of the national artifacts president Sawyer as imagined by Fox is a lot of fun I'm not doing that [ __ ] he yells watching Cal working some dangerous cables in the Elevator Shaft their trap in expressing a deeply Humane political Vision yet with a true politician's common touch the President also offers Nicorette most graciously any resemblance to the current resident of the White House is intentional Sawyer and Cal get nearly equal screen time bonding as action heroes together against the world gyllen Hall initially strikes the right tone as agent finery cooly turning down Cal but watching empathetically as he exits note to the new woman it's one way to handle professional duties with a plom while letting your nurturing side show a bit yet after the Takeover and in a secret bunker war room she issues orders like a zoned out zombie James Woods gives a braier performance as her boss the head of secret service with his own frightening secrets that drive the film but even here there is a light touch as we watch him reaching for his lores Pan the special effects are scary hairy enough to satisfy the midsummer I wish to go to the Moon impulse Emer has his regular crew on board cinematographer Anna Forester and his visual effects team of vuler Angel and Mark Wier they deliver the swirl of Terror smash-ups and imminent disaster CGI can be spectacular for the seven plagues of course it works in the action film too for this viewer though the good news is there's less of it than feared and a few touches are quite clever an airplane demolishment takes You by surprise with a Sly film history reference White House Down is still too gun happppy and too long but however you feel about the Oval Office our country or some of the movies jingoism young Emily is worth rescuing King is an actress who can show courage loyalty and justifiable fear without Ever Getting modellin and her Emily is the true hero of White House Down unbelievably Brave though you still believe her like all kids these days she's is a whiz at technology and picture taking even in the most dire circumstances she makes you hopeful about the generation which will lead the country soon enough she's as sharp as attack and definitely going places and John loves her dearly lately he's been working hard to make that relationship a more solid one so when Jon finally finagles an interview with a secret service something he's been dreaming about for a long time he makes sure to get a White House pass for am as well she is after all infatuated with all things government related Emily has her own current issues video blog knows the ins and outs of the political scene and can even give the White House tour guide a pointer or two their day together starts out nicely but then the Secret Service interview goes south it turns out that so so performance records don't really cut it in the big leagues and unfortunately that's a reality JN can't do anything about and then things go from bad to worse much worse while John and Emily are taking the White House Tour a heavily armed paramilitary group bombs the Rotunda kills nearly every security officer and guard locks the place down and starts moving to take the president hostage this situation however is one that Jon can do something about he may never have been in a student but he's learned some lessons very well John Cole knows how to protect people and take out low lives with submachine guns from Jon's perspective it's a simple job of finding the right hiding places and locating the best weapons possible from there all he has to do is save his daughter the president and well the country Jon selflessly puts his life on the line when no one is asking him to do so part of that is due to the fact that as he puts it he can't think of a more important job than to protect the president but another part of his heroic choice is his inherent instinct to help where he can in spite of the danger he can't stop himself from following the bad guys when they're threatening others in fact the only task that takes higher priority in his book is the protection of his daughter the two of them are separated early on and Jon spends a good deal of his time just trying to find her but she's always on his mind no matter what other Daring Do he may be engaged in John and president Sawyer have a couple of conversations about the challenges of raising children these days but both are determined to be the best fathers they can possibly be and Sawyer as a world leader is painted in a heroic idealistic light on the political front he talks about his desire to make a difference and moves to implement a middle east peace plan that many in his political sphere aren't happy about he says he believes even people with deep differences can overcome them if they choose to do so he wants to do something bigger than simply campaign for re-election to be remembered like Lincoln Jefferson and Washington as a president who did something important the president treats Emily kindly before The Invasion and later acts as a kind of surrogate father protecting her when Jon can't do so he is also ready to step out and surrender when the attackers threaten to kill someone if he doesn't show up for her part Emily repeatedly acts heroically as well first filming the Invaders secretly with her phone and uploading the footage to YouTube where government agents see it and use it to identify the men and eventually playing a key role in averting a devastating strike on the White House by incoming Air Force jets on a different note a White House secret service manager transitioning into retirement exhorts his replacement that she needs to have a life besides her career don't make this your whole life he says trust me it's not worth it the right-wing paramilitary attackers Tech Savvy hacker pulls out a small statue of the Hindu god Shiva to place beside his electronic belongings two scenes involve presidents being sworn in with hands on Bibles we hear the phrase so help me God John also earnestly blurts out thank God during a security sweep of an area where the president's helicopter is landing an agent spots a thermal image of a couple having sex in their apartment Jon agrees to provide a young female Aid dinner and more than second base for her help in getting him a secret service interview and a White House pass for his daughter during a White House Tour a woman wants to see the secret tunnels that John F Kennedy purportedly used to smuggle Marilyn Monroe into the White House for his alleged affair with her that subject comes up again later in the film as well we hear that johon and his wife welcomed little Emily into the world just 6 months after they were married it seems virtually every big action film lately has to include some sort of mass destruction scene and White House Down is no exception a faux janitor Wheels a cart into the middle of the White House rotunda and detonates it collapsing the Dome and killing scores of Innocents and from there the death dealing and destruction only mounts the well-armed attackers systematically kill every guard and Soldier inside outside and on top of the White House some are taken out with silenced pistol shots at Point Blank Range the bad guys then set up snipers on the roof armed with High Caliber weaponry and surface to air missiles the snipers take out gate guards with precise head shot rooftop troops also destroy armored RVs a small tank and a variety of Attack Helicopters sending them spiraling earthward in shrapnel spewing balls of flame one of those aircraft a Blackhawk military helicopter crashes into the side of the White House demolishing a wall residential quarters in the White House are set on fire an armored limo is riddled with bullets and sent flipping into the White House pool Air Force One gets blown out of the sky too several buildings on the grounds erupt in Flames as well a man is crushed against a wall by a speeding RV after an explosion a large piece of glass pierces the president's side another person gets shot in the chest while trying to defend an innocent new numerous victims are manhandled and pushed around one of those victims is Young Emily she's slapped in the face has a pistol placed menacingly against her head and is used as a pond to manipulate her father indeed it looks as if the White House Interlopers will make good on their threat to execute her at one point one of the thugs holding her hostage growls when they come for us you're going to die first they also threaten to kill the girl unless the president gives them important access access to nuclear codes he poignant he tries to tell Emily that he'll have to let her die instead of letting millions of others die if he gives up the codes I understand Emily says tearfully and bravely if all that weren't enough Emily repeatedly Witnesses security guards being gunned down all in all a lot of intense violence for a girl of perhaps 10 or 11 to be exposed to JN and one of the key attackers stance go at each other in a rough and tumble brawl that bloodies both both men and sends them tumbling off a roof and through a window a tour guide kills a man with a heavy antique clock the president stabs someone in the back with a fountain pen and then gets shot himself a man is killed when a belt full of grenades get wrapped around his neck and detonated another is perforated by bullets a third gets obliterated by explosives after the president is shot Jon must remove a bullet from his torso we see the bloody wound before John goes to work on the Wiz inducing task president Sawyer has boxes of Nicorette in his bedside table and he pops a couple of tabs to calm his nerves a political Aid drinks a glass of alcohol aboard Air Force One somebody else takes prescription medication the movie promotes the opinion that there's a thin line between those on the conservative side of the political aisle and a warmongering defense industry that's determined to keep its profits intact two key government insiders end up being traitors if you're worried you're going crazy because you thought the White House already went down once in 2013 let me assure you everything's fine with your mental state just as happened in Olympus Has Fallen our country's capital has once again come under cinematic assault with the executive Mansion again serving as the attackers focal point instead of North Koreans this time it's right-wing extremists and white supremacists who are slipping with ridic ridiculous ease past the country's tightest security and taking control of our nation's big bombs with paramilitary Precision oh and all those John mlan comparisons raised by that last actioner well they go triple here the average Joe hero this go round is one John Cal and as hapless hero foils the bad guy's Behavior feels almost beat for beat like any of the past Die Hard films minus Willis patented smirking onliners and plus a brave little girl exposed repeatedly to brutal violence and Mortal threats practically from start to finish the most unfortunate part of such of course is how this film's formula ex fists and fire action from disaster director extraordinaire Roland Emerich plays on the big screen sure the PG-13 rating means we don't witness the exact kind of gruesome violence that our rated Olympus Has Fallen was chalk full of but don't mistake that comparison for an endorsement we still get a big dose of harsh language paired with merely slightly sanitized below everything to smithin violence violence that ultimately feels like it's just being mindlessly and mercilessly recycled from one let's blow up the White House movie to the next White House Down is one of the worst movies of the year in the story a policeman guarding the Republican Speaker of the House in Congress visits the White House to get a job protecting the pacifist president while he and his daughter tore the White House ruthless Christian mercenaries take over the building with help from the head of the Secret Service a female agent says the terrorists are made up of Christian Patriot identity and capitalist terrorists who are at the top of the extremist list after much shooting and killing the president figures out how to use a gun and a rocket launcher to kill the enemies evidently the speaker engineered the attack to help the military industrial complex which has been opposed to the president's peace plans why White House Down is so bad it makes Olympus Has Fallen look like a masterpiece often the dialogue is so stupid the audience laughed at the movie plot holes abound atrocious acting abounds anti-christian politically correct attitudes abound clunky fil making abounds White House Down is a painful miserable experience very strong Pagan politically correct neo-marxist anti-christian anti- capitalist miserable worldview where bad is good good and good is bad so the Muslims in the Middle East are good and Christians Republicans and corporations are the enemies of the New World Order 38 obscenities and 18 profanities excessive action violence includes young girl gets hit by a gun and slapped people shot at Point Blank Range bodies blown apart people wounded with shards of glass in them gunshots gun battles rocket launchers explosions American Secret Service military all shot down by so-call called Christian patriotic terrorists one brief scene of man looking through a window at a man on top of woman in sexual context and brief sexual inuendo in another scene upper male nudity alcohol use no smoking or illegal drugs and Patriots are the bad guys Christians are the bad guys businessmen are bad guys Republicans are the bad guys president goes from being a pacifist to crazed killer White House Down is so bad in every respect that it makes Olympus Has Fallen look like a masterpiece at some points the dialogue is so stupid that the audience laughed at the movie not with it plot holes abound anti-christian attitudes abound clunky miserable film making abounds if it didn't sound racist the name could be D Jango becomes president White House Down opens with President James Sawyer played by Jamie Fox pulling out troops and offering peace to the Muslims in the Middle East the Republican speaker of the house ilay raffelson believes Sawyer is weakening America and someone mentions the speaker is just speaking for the military industrial complex John Cal played by Channing todam is The Bodyguard for the speaker to make up for missing his daughter's talent show he gets a friend inside the White House to get him a pass to bring his daughter and to interview for the Secret Service he takes his daughter who's delighted but the interview goes badly because John Cal has never stuck with anything in in his life however while he and his daughter are touring the White House ruthless mercenaries take over the building with help from the head of the Secret Service Martin Walker special agent Carol finerty played by Maggie gyllen Hall says that the terrorists are made up of Christian identity and capitalist terrorists and that they are at the top of the extremist list in other words the filmmakers are blaming the wrong guys and doing it poorly their whole movie is nothing but globalist propaganda in fact the Studio's production notes actually mention that President Sawyer is working for Global community in case you didn't get it some of the bad guys are Patriots and others are clearly Christian and have crosses of all types tattooed on their bodies after killing off the Secret Service it also becomes clear that the Secret Service the NSA the Capitol Police and the FBI are all fools the Christian terrorists aren't much better the dialogue in White House down is clunky the music is awful and the acting is atrocious White House Down is a painful miserable movie to watch instead of seeing White House Down get a copy of Gerard Butler and Antoine fuka Olympus Has Fallen movies like White House Down are slowly but surely extinguishing the torch of freedom in America and around the world the movies of director Roland Emer who's become a huge left-wing activist have never been the same since he stopped working with producer Dean delin related information it's open season on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue yet again in Roland emer's White House Down a slick High concept actioner that has the unusual distinction of arriving several months after its Bargain Basement knockoff Antoine fukus Olympus Has Fallen itself owing much to such lone man of action Hallmarks as die hard and speed this welcome throwback to an earlier more generously entertaining era of Summer Blockbusters delivers a wide array of Close Quarters combat and large scale destruction all grounded in an immensely appealing star turn by Channing totam and Ace support from imperal podus Jamie Fox though unlikely to rival career best emerage Grocers Independence Day and 2012 in the outer reaches of the box office Stratosphere pick should net a tidy profit for Sony helping to Salve the still fresh wounds of aftere setting aside the question of whether the world really needed a second White House takeover movie in terms of sheer craftsmanship and professionalism White House Down is to Olympus Has Fallen what Raiders of the Lost Arc was to the 1985 Richard Chamberlain Sharon Stone version of King Solomon's Minds though both picks were majority shot far from the actual Beltway Olympus in Louisiana and White House in Montreal emir's film is a far better cell from production designer C perkim petrick s's enormously impressive replica set to the visual effects by longtime Emir collaborators vuler Angel and Oscar winter for Independence Day and Mark wyard relatively speaking the new pick is shrewder politically two giving us an enemy from within America's own borders in place of Olympus Central Casting North Korean baddies Emir also offers the screen's most overtly Obama s commander and chief to date in the form of Fox's James Sawyer a self-styled Lin colian who gets his kicks from buzzing the Lincoln Memorial in Marine 1 and even carries a pocket watch that once belonged to Honest Abe himself he's also in the words of one tea partyish detractor an academic who never served a day in his life and his controversial plan to withdraw all as troops from the Middle East has ruffled more than a few feathers in the military industrial complex ttm's John Cal by contrast has done his time in The Trenches three tours of Duty in Afghanistan to be precise during one of them he saved the life of a fellow Soldier whose Uncle happens to be the Speaker of the House Richard Jenkins earning Cal his current job as a capital policeman assigned to the speaker's security detail somewhere in those same years Cal's personal life went bust leaving him with an ex-wife and Moody patine kid to try to win back an outcome in a grand scheme of movies like this that can often be hastened by some EXT extravagant Act of heroism strict narrative logicians be forewarned the cheerfully Preposterous coincidences pile up in White House Down faster than the body count just as a certain John mlan found himself in a Los Angeles office building at the exact moment of a Brazen hostage taking so too does Cal turn up at the White House in the hours before some suspicious looking home theater repairmen drop their a equipment and break out the big guns something it must be said that the pck makes Look So Easy you can't help wondering if the pre left the keys to the front door under the mat Cal has come for a job interview to join the president's Secret Service team an idea of which he is quickly disabused by special agent Carol finerty Maggie Gyllenhaal a former College classmate who rattles off a detailed inventory of Cal's lifelong failure to live up to his potential one more doubter to disprove adding insult to injury Cal has brought his president obsessed daughter Emily Joey King along for the day in a touching effort to convince her he isn't a total failure when she insists they stick around for an official White House Tour he reluctantly agrees which is right around the time that all hell breaks loose just what these particular bad guys are after as something White House Down reveals gradually with a few red herrings along the way what comes to light relatively early in a modestly provocative Twist on the usual terrorist MO is that they're all all disgruntled Americans with ideological axes to grind including an excia contractor who did black bag work in Pakistan played in a Sly bit of casting by head Zod Dark 30 interrogator Jason Clark that and about to retire Secret Service Chief is also mixed up in this will come as a surprise only to those who miss the character's introductory scene glowering into the camera as he removes an Old Glory lapel pin and tells his wife he'll be home late tonight or who have never before seen the actor playing said role James Woods for much of the pick's first half Emer keeps the action on a relatively human scale with Cal and Sawyer engaging the evildoers in tight claustrophobic spaces including a dumb waiter shaft and the first kitchen eventually the film makes its way to the South lawn for a spirited loop-to-loop car chase involving the bulletproof presidential limo and to a looming military air strike that threatens to do to the White House what aliens did to it in Independence Day throughout Emir Harbors no greater goal than to keep the audience mindlessly entertained at which he generally succeeds so much so that one is compelled to overlook the niggling particulars like the fact that Woods Clark at Al make for a villain Collective ultimately more incompetent than terrifying where Olympus Has Fallen weighed heavy with rahr jingoism White House Down propers a more innocent kind of Americana up to and including a climactic set piece that tips its hat without a lick of irony to the War of 1812 the movie's most special effect is without doubt toam who gives Cal a strong rooting interest well before the first shots are fired as in Magic Mike he's ideally cast as a kind of thinking man's lunk head who makes up in common sense coolness under pressure and sheer likeability what he lacks in book smarts and though White House Down fails to include any proper dance numbers ttm's physical Grace is on ample display as he tumbles and Glides through one cacophonous action melee after the next newcomer King also registers a strong impression as the precocious tykee who runs intellectual circles around her dad but also proves a chip off the old block where staring down her captors is concerned while Nicholas right offers typically goofy Emir style comic relief as a noit all white house tour guide throwback man has been pillaging the visual style and narrative form of 70s and ' 80s movies for a while now so I guess it was always going to be the case that we'd eventually get a '90s throwback though the word throwback suggests something a little bit more self-aware and ironic than White House Down in which the '90s director to end all '90s directors Roland Independence Day emerage parties like its 1999 aided by writer James Vanderbilt whose career didn't start until the 2000s but but has based on the evidence of the film been spending all of that time ready and eager to plunge right into the story tropes and dialogue of that recently bygone era so for example we have divorce John Cal Channing toam whose 11-year-old daughter Emily Joey King a child actress I am beginning to admire very much can barely stand him owing to his Non-Stop fuckbud and tendency to miss important events and expect his far more tolerant than she needs to be ex-wife Melle Leever to bail him out Cal is also working right now as the chauffeur for speaker raffelson Richard Jenkins of the House of Representatives but trying his mightiest to get into the Secret Service and as the film begins he's finally managed to sweet talk Jenna Jackie giri a highlevel staff member under the vice president Michael Murphy into setting him up with an interview who should prove to be the interviewer though but Carol finerty Maggie Gyllenhaal high ranking agent and apparently a former girl friend or even more likely a former one night stand who regards Cal's unimpressive resume and personal history of never finishing anything he starts as exactly the wrong qualifications to bodyguard for the president now in a traditional '90s disaster structure action film Cal would probably be at least two different people but that's what makes this a contemporary gloss or whatever this percolates the film ends up talking an alarmingly long time to ramp up the action in fact fact and the opening sequences where we get to know the characters are all deeply tedious and stretched out though it's better than the utterly atrocious parody of human behavior and geopolitical illiteracy that open Olympus Has Fallen also a feature of the '90s action film though probably not one being copied on purpose it feels like they're never going to end when we finally get to the point that a group of rabid militants led by excia operative Sten Jason Clark raging against the president for a whole host of reasons execute a complicated plot to take over the White House Cal and Emily happen to be on a White House tour at that exact time and circumstances play out such that the secret service agent in charge Martin Walker James Woods loses track of his charge and it falls solely to the isolated Cal to protect President James Sawyer Jamie Fox through the violence and Mayhem that play out through the rest of a very bad day as it turns out that this was all ultimately driven by the ire of the military industrial complex over the president's attempt to bring about peace in the Middle East by removing all his forces from the region which is the next 90s element fallen into place White House Down is emphatically proud to be a liberal message movie though one where the president can brightly point out that removing troops is just for theater because all the actual killing is and will continue to be done by drones and this is not perceived as a problem with the villains all being explicitly tied to right-wing ideologies it used to be very much the case that real world domestic politics informed popcorn movies and not even that long ago all sorts of movies and all sorts of genres used to openly align themselves with usually Democratic or much less often Republican concerns though mostly at a superficial level the last decade and change have witnessed the two- party divide in the US turning unusually bitter while an explosion in the world's Cinema Market has made it desirable for every halfway expensive movie to play for all audiences of all countries and both of these have tended to suck the real world politics out of every major film but Along come Emer and Vanderbilt cheerfully sliming Republicans while making their obvious Barack Obama analogue an allaround terrific guy whose deeply held pacifism doesn't keep him from being an action hero the problem with White House Down you see is not one of plausibility ideology or political messiness it's that the film is contrived and dumb the action lead-footed and CGI addicted in all the very worst ways it plainly cost more than Olympus but that comes at the price of being bloated and having loggy action the last characteristically '90s touch in Vanderbilt screenplay is the howlingly bad dialogue which veers between crappy Exposition though in one delightful moment a character turle cuts off another for saying something they both already know and grueling quips that plot off the actor's tongue as if nobody involved had ever actually encountered humor though several of them had at least heard about it for toam after a year of successes as a light touch pseudo comic actor this is particularly disappointing and prove if it was needed that he should be prevented from making action movies worse still it's boring taking too much time out to establish a geopolitical worldview that makes no sense and doesn't lend any Credence to the action while that action itself is dully pedestrian with one of The Cutting Edge Sparkle of Independence Day which his name dropped or the Flatout [ __ ] weirdness of 2012 lesser action movies built around more heinously unconvincing characters are released every single summer but White House Down is still a big slab of tedium in its own right and its Chief Merit as an action film in 2013 is that it has been cut according to a much more sedate Rhythm than most of them in terms of being in the least ways exhilarating though nothing of the sort it's just braing and tepid and the promise that it was going to be a fun buddy action picture falls apart on the particularly empty-headed performances of toam and fox draining the last trace of humanity from a movie that had very little to spare in the first place and so it's all just so many noisy moments stitched together indifferently with only the general rockus of the picture cluing Us in that any of this is meant to be entertaining more details of White House Down 2013 film while attending San Diego Comic Con the directors of Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down address their films releasing in the same year hitting theaters only about 3 months apart in 2013 both Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down chronical attacks on the American president and the White House Gerard Butler leads the former as secret service agent Mike Banning while Channing todam leads the White House downcast as Capitol policeman John kala with both movies serving as action packed rides with fun political twists Olympus Has Fallen hit theaters in March 2013 earning mixed reviews from critics the film currently has a lackluster 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics mostly taking issue with the film feeling more or less like a generic action film there are Thrills to be had however and Butler especially proves himself a capable Action Hero Olympus Has Fallen was a box office hit to ultimately thing that has fallen franchise which now consists of three films as seen in the chart above White House Down fared about the same critically as fua film both movies suffer from some of the same problems but emir's film has been criticized for featuring underwhelming action sequences despite its more generic elements Olympus Has Fallen at the very least does feature some hard-hitting violent action in terms of box office White House Down looks looks like the clear winner on the surface but its budget complicates matters while White House Down earned about $35 million more at the box office it also cost about $80 million more to make while Olympus Has Fallen likely earned a decent profit emer's film may have been looking at a break even point of over $300 million making it a commercial disappointment if one film is to be crowned winner the franchise starting Olympus Has Fallen looks like it comes out on top few information about this film making a silly fun action movie is a difficult balance if the film takes itself too seriously in order to make the stakes feel more immediate then the audience can become uncomfortable for example Olympus Has Fallen if the film is constantly winking at the audience then they can grow tired with a movie that's trying way too hard to be ironic for example Snakes on a Plane director Roland Emer has rarely had trouble striking the right balance Emer knows to Pepper the movie with Snappy funny dialogue have the good-hearted characters take their situation seriously and never be afraid to go melodramatic over the top and do so in a way that's unashamed rather than Shameless White House Down is Emir at his best and delivers exactly the movie we've come to expect from the Blockbuster director President James Sawyer Jamie Fox has made the Bold decision to entirely pull out of the Middle East thus delivering a crippling blow to the powerful military industrial complex meanwhile John calch Channing totam is applying to become a secret service agent not only out of a sense of Duty but also to impress his estranged daughter Emily Joey King who is a bigger fan of the president than she is of her dad after getting turned down for the job father and daughter go on a White House to only to have a group of bad guys storm the building and try to take the president hostage Emily and Cal get separated and while trying to find her he manages to rescue Sawyer Cal must try to find his daughter and get the president to safety while a larger conspiracy swirls around them the plot sounds fairly convoluted and to an extent it is there are a lot of players like Secret Service Deputy finery Maggie Gyllenhaal Cal's boss and Speaker of the House ralphus Richard Jenkins leader of the bad guys Sten Jason Clark eccentric bad guy hacker skip Tyler Jimmy Simpson and Secret Service Chief Walker James Woods The Script never gets bogged down in its loaded cast and instead uses them to create a fleet-footed narrative that is constantly flipping between the various players rather than resting solely on cow and Sawyer thankfully the strong cast never has us aching to get back to Stronger players even Sten whose motives are nebulous and personality consists of being angry and really angry find some life thanks to Clark's intense performance but the film's biggest strength is relying on the chemistry between todam and fox for all of the cheerful stupidity of the plot the clever center of the picture is taking Die Hard giving Cal and Sawyer a buddy cop Dynamic and trapping them inside the White House by Smashing these formulas together and then anchoring it with two charismatic performances everything else can begin to fall into place we know that no matter how serious everything seeming ly becomes we have an enjoyable pairing between two characters we care about everyone the film is going for the dramatic moments it's still having fun at times White House Down feels like a fake movie you'd see in a real movie during Cal's interview with finerty she tells him that one of his previous evaluations describes him as having raw potential but does not aim to realize it it's a safe assumption he'll realize it over the course of the 2-hour action movie that involved olves him saving his daughter and the president of the United States just for starters the stakes get even bigger as the movie goes along for Emer the tone of the emotional scenes has to match the scale of the action scenes this is the third time in emer's filmography in which he's destroyed the White House but demolishing it from the inside out is a nice change of pace most of the action is fairly intimate and involves fast-paced shootouts and fist fights it's only when he steps out the door that the action gets crazy and not necessarily for the best there's a big explosion at the capital the equivalent of a flashing sign saying this [ __ ] just got real even though [ __ ] gets much more real as the movie progresses but Emerich feels like he's showing off when he has a car chase that's basically the president's armored limo going in circles on the White House front lawn staying practical is emer's best friend because even though he's been able to pull off terrific visual effects in his past films the CGI in White House Down is underwhelming in addition to the poorly rendered Jets and helicopters The Spectators standing outside the White House front gate all look like they're in front of a green screen as if the film ran out of money to do decent composite work but these are minor quibbles in a movie that is Unapologetic and can laugh along with its audience White House Down never feels like it's talking down to us because it implicitly acknowledges that we're smart enough to rec recognize the film's overwhelming silliness this isn't Olympus Has Fallen where the movie misguidedly tries to convince us the dumb action where watching could actually happen Barack Obama nor any other president is going to be firing a rocket launcher out of his presidential limo anytime soon emir's commitment to the tone even manages to successfully sidestep the pesky problem of a president who's trying to shut down weapons manufacturers in a movie that features plenty of weapons White House house down happily skips along as Macho action Rains Down in a cartoonish manner that invites us to have fun rather than come up with a pretense to join the party White House Down is a movie from another era it's an Unapologetic throwback to a 1980s guns and muscle flick replete with an entirely implausible Bas premise campy villains cheesy onliners and a shoehorned in buddy per up the obvious comparison to make is to this March's Gerard Butler vehicle a Olympus Has Fallen and it's true the two films have a great deal of rather obvious similarities however White House Down is far more goofy than gritty on the action movie Spectrum Capitol policeman John Cal Channing toam is determined to impress his somewhat estranged and US Government trivia obsessed daughter Joey King by becoming a part of the secret service directly following his ill-fated interview for the coveted position the White House is taken over by a paramilitary force whose aim is to kidnap the president Jamie Fox and gain control of the building's vast arsenal of weapons Cal must rise to the occasion and against all conceivable odds rescue the president his daughter and not just the nation but the world from the potential onset of a nuclear crisis sounds like an intense high stakes ride but really White House Down is a shut down the brain bit of light-hearted fluff it's easy to liken the film to some of the more well-known actioners of the past most notably Die Hard Andor Air Force One in truth there's simply nothing new or fresh on the table here the script is brimming with often dated zany quips and onliners the relationships are a rehashing of those we've seen before and the villains are a screwy mly crew of hilbilly white supremacists computer hacking super freaks former military psychos and a couple who may just be hobos each plot twist is telegraphed well before happens in what is essentially a hodg podge of old school action tropes oh and logic is absolutely not invited to this party another issue is that those who enjoy the grand scale Calamity that this true artist of spectacle often serves up may be disappointed as visually White House Town doesn't actually feel very Roland Emerich like there aren't any big epic swooping scenes of Destruction on tap the action is generally isolated to a few key places and in moments feels disjointed as characters occasionally pop in and out of doorways with no clear sense of direction there are several hero shots to remind us that the master of disaster is at the helm but the payoff doesn't fulfill the setup ultimately however if you can look past the reverse pyramid of absurdity White House Down is a highly entertaining experience though perhaps not always in the ways that were intended the onliners are so not funny that they they Circle all the way around to become funny again these are for the most part charming and engaging performers Fox and totm don't have the electric chemistry that you'd want in a film like this one but they work well enough together it occasionally feels as though each member of the cast is in a slightly different movie but totam fully Embraces his role as a retroaction hero Jason Clark is a standout as his simultaneously comedic and ruthlessly villainous counterpart the key to enjoying this film is going in with the right mindset and the right group of people this isn't the best of the Roland Emerich dumb fun offerings and isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination but if you're willing to give over to the Ridiculousness of it all White House Down can be an amusing and again absurd but enjoyable Diversion the only question is are they in on the joke White House Down is a pretty silly rehashing of previously tread action movie ter territory but if you're willing to laugh along with or even at it it can be a highly entertaining experience cast directed by Roland imer written by which he receives word that other nations have agreed to his peace deal after learning of the events at the White House calling for an end to all wars to ensure peace White House Down is directed by Roland Emerich and written by James Vanderbilt who is also one of the film's producers Sony Pictures purchased Vanderbilt's spec script in March 2012 for $3 million in what The Hollywood Reporter called one of the biggest specs sales in quite a while the journal said the script was similar tonally and thematically to the film's Die Hard 1988 and Air Force 11 1997 in the following April Sony hired Roland Emer as director Emerich began filming in July 2012 at the L City du Cinema in Montreal Quebec Canada cinematographer Anna Forester shot the film with a Alexa plus digital cameras in 2012 Sony competed with Millennium films who were producing Olympus Has Fallen also about a takeover of the White House to complete casting and to begin filming White House Down was originally scheduled audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of a on and a plus to f scale Roth cornet ofine gave the film a score of six 510th concluding White House Down is a pretty silly rehashing of previously tread action movie territory but if you're willing to laugh along with or even at it it can be a highly entertaining Experience Andrew Chan of the film critic circle of Australia wrote I am not entirely sure whether I should be happy or sad that I laughed when someone got shot or bombed but such is the manner of how the film is played out Mark kermode of the Observer gave the film three fifth Stars writing that it at least has the good grace to laugh at itself as it rolls out the dingbat Daft action movie cliché sh rupta of the Indian Express gave the film to five fifth Stars writing trouble is it goes on too long it has several climactic moments but every time you ready for the exit the film bounces back again for the next round Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian gave the film two five stars saying that real Thrills dependent on real believable Jeopardy are not on offer just cheerfully absurd spectacle and a little bit of humor White House Down gross 73.1 million in the United States and $32.32 5.4 million against a budget of $150 million the film made $24.8 million in North America during its opening weekend coming in below expectations and finishing fourth at the box office review of White House Down 2013 film you've got to give the hutzpah award to director Roland Emer in his action thriller White House Down he's competing not just with a recent similarly themed Olympus Has Fallen but himself how to Trump your own signature scene in Independence Day a film in which an alien spaceship wipes out the home of the US president breaking out of the apocalyptic mode he's known for including destruction by climate change in the day after tomorrow and in 2012 he goes with Shameless but clever self homage early into White House Down right around the time the capital building is destroyed a voice is heard just like an independence day this time it's an inside job aliens not required what with with right-wing sociopaths white supremacists and assorted bureaucrats with nasty agendas right here in the Homeland the title also hits us subliminally is the White House really our house and how much does it hurt us when it's attacked in White House Down Channing todam plays John Cal a Capitol Hill Police Officer Afghanistan vet and divorce he can't make the grade of security guard for the president because he was a bit of a slacker as his secret service interviewer met Maggie Gyllenhaal reminds him so it's a sad moment when he has to pick up his waiting daughter Emily Joey King skipping over the bad news he instead offers a White House Tour suddenly a paramilitary force commandeers the place and threatens to start World War Roman 3 wrong place right time for c as he becomes the de facto presidential protector after all though in the extreme straddle position of having to cover the president and rescue Emily when she has taken hostage regret is a great motivator I'd like to have one of these guilt driven Security Guys protecting me Clint Eastwood in in the line of fire 1993 who failed to save the life of John F Kennedy Olympus Has Fallen bodyguard Gerard Butler who did rescue the president but not the first lady Channing todam specifically for every sexiest man alive reason plus his dance trained agility and his desire to impress and bond with his estang daughter in other near clone comparisons you can't help but think the DI Hard franchise with its alienated kids as in the latest Die Hard Emily even calls her Father John for a while before breaking through to Dad the Die Hard franchise has so run its course that the only real pleasure left is finding out how much punishment mlan can take Cal doesn't get as brutalized by battle as John mlan though he takes many knocks in White House down the Weiss cracks are spread out toam being too much of a sweetheart type to deliver all of them the evil computer genius who gains control of nored squeals don't touch my toys when the president and Cal commandeer the presidential limo quite a car chase upgrade and after Sawyer remembers the back seat will not be appropriate for riding shotgun he starts shooting that's something you don't see every day says an amazed Aid watching from afar the script by James Vanderbilt of The Amazing Spider-Man is hip bad enemy boys can be diabetic a White House tour guide a truly witty turn by Nicholas right begs the Marauders to be careful of the national artifacts president Sawyer as Imagine by Fox is a lot of fun I'm not doing that [ __ ] he yells watching Cal working some dangerous cables in the Elevator Shaft they're trapped in expressing a deeply Humane political Vision yet with a true Pol politician common touch the President also offers Nicorette most graciously any resemblance to the current resident of the White House is intentional Sawyer and Cal get nearly equal screen time bonding as action heroes together against the world gyllen Hall initially strikes the right tone as age Infinity cooly turning down Cal but watching empathetically as he exits note to the new woman it's one way to handle professional duties with a plum while letting your nurt ing Sideshow a bit yet after the Takeover and in a secret bunker war room she issues orders like a zonked out zombie James Woods gives a bravour performance as her boss the head of secret service with his own frightening secrets that drive the film but even here there is a light touch as we watch him reaching for his lores Pan the special effects are scary hairy enough to satisfy the midsummer I wish to go to the Moon impulse Emer has his regular crew on board cinematographer Anna Forester and his visual effects team of vuler Angel and Mark Wier they deliver the swirl of Terror smash-ups and imminent disaster CGI can be spectacular for the seven plagues of course it works in the action film too for this viewer though the good news is there's less of it than feared and a few touches are quite clever an airplane demolishment takes you by surprise with a Sly film history reference White House Down is still too gun happy and too long but however you feel about the Oval Office our country or some of the movies jingoism young Emily is worth rescuing King is an actress who can show courage loyalty and justifiable fear without Ever Getting modelin and her Emily is the true hero of White House Down unbelievably Brave though you still believe her like all kids these days she's a whiz at technology and picture taking even in the most dire circumstances she makes you hopeful about the generation which will lead the country soon enough she's as sharp as a tack in definitely going places and Jon loves her dearly lately he's been working hard to make that relationship a more solid one so when Jon finally finagles an interview with a secret service something he's been dreaming about for a long time he makes sure to get a White House pass for am as well she is after all infatuated with all things government related Emily has her own current issues video blog knows the ins and outs of the political scene and can even give the White House tour guide a pointer or two their day together starts out nicely but then the Secret Service interview goes south it turns out that so so performance records don't really cut it in the big leagues and unfortunately that's a reality Jon can't do anything about and then things go from bad to worse much worse while John and Emily are taking the White House Tour a heavily armed paramilitary group bombs the Rotunda kills nearly every security officer and guard locks the place down and starts moving to take the president hostage this situation however is one that Jon can do something about he may never have been in a student but he's learned some lessons very well John Cole knows how to protect people and take out low lives with submachine guns from Jon's perspective it's a simple job of finding the right hiding places and locating the best weapons possible from there all he has to do is save his daughter the president and well the country Jon selflessly puts his life on the line when no one is asking him to do so part of that is due to the fact that as he puts it he can't think of a more important job than to protect the president but another part of his heroic choice is his inherent instinct to help where he can in spite of the danger he can't stop himself from following the bad guys when they're threatening others in fact the only task that takes higher priority in his book is the protection of his daughter the two of them are separated early on and JN spends a good deal of his time just trying to find her but she's always on his mind no matter what other Daring Do he may be engaged in John and president Sawyer have a couple of conversations about the challenges of raising children these days but both are determined to be the best fathers they can possibly B and Sawyer as a world leader is painted in a heroic idealistic light on the political front he talks about his desire to make a difference and moves to implement a middle east peace plan that many in his political sphere aren't happy about he says he believes even people with deep differences can overcome them if they choose to do so he wants to do something bigger than simply campaign for reelection to be remembered like Lincoln Jefferson and Washington as a president who did something important the president treats Emily kindly before The Invasion and later acts as a kind of surrogate father protecting her when Jon can't do so he is also ready to step out and surrender when the attackers threaten to kill someone if he doesn't show up for her part Emily repeatedly acts heroically as well first filming the Invaders secretly with her phone and uploading the footage to YouTube where government agents see it and use it to identify the men and eventually playing a key role in averting a devastating strike on the White House by incoming Air Force jets on a different note a White House secret service manager transitioning into retirement exhorts his replacement that she needs to have a life besides her career don't make this your whole life he says trust me it's not worth it the right-wing paramilitary attackers techsavvy hacker pulls out a small statue of the Hindu god Shiva to place beside his electronic belongings two scenes involve presidents being sworn in with hands on Bibles we hear the phrase so help me God John also earnestly blurts out thank God during a security sweep of an area where the president's helicopter is landing an agent spots a thermal image of a couple having sex in their apartment JN agrees to provide a young female Aid dinner and more than second base for her help in getting him a secret service interview and a White House pass for his daughter during a White House Tour a woman wants to see the secret tunnels that John F Kennedy purportedly used to smuggle Marilyn Monroe into the White House for his alleged affair with her that subject comes up again later in the film as well we hear that John and his wife welcomed little Emily into the world just 6 months after they were married it seems virtually every big action film lately has to include some sort of mass destruction scene and White House Down is no exception a faux janitor Wheels a cart into the middle of the White House rotunda and detonates it collapsing the Dome and killing scores of Innocents and from there the death dealing and destruction only mounts the well armed attackers systematically kill every guard and Soldier inside outside and on top of the White House some are taken out with silenced pistol shots at Point Blank Range the bad guys then set up snipers on the roof armed with High Caliber weaponry and surface to air missiles the snipers take out gate guards with precise head shots rooftop troops also destroy armored RVs a small tank and a variety of Attack Helicopters sending them spiraling earthward in shrapnel spewing balls of flame one of those aircraft a Blackhawk military helicopter crashes into the side of the White House demolishing a wall residential quarters in the White House are set on fire and armored limo is riddled with bullets and sent flipping into the White House pool Air Force One gets blown out of the sky too several buildings on the grounds erupt in Flames as well a man is crushed against a wall by a speeding RV after an explosion a large piece of glass pierces the president's side another person gets shot in the chest while trying to defend an innocent numerous victims are manhandled and pushed around one of those victims is Young Emily she's slapped in the face has a pistol placed menacingly against her head and is used as a pawn to manipulate her father indeed it looks as if the White House Interlopers will make good on their threat to execute her at one point one of the thugs holding her hostage growls when they come for us you're going to die first they also threaten to kill the girl unless the president gives them important access to nuclear codes he poigny tries to tell Emily that he'll have to let her die instead of letting millions of others die if he gives up the codes I understand Emily says tearfully and bravely if all that weren't enough Emily repeatedly Witnesses security guards being gunned down all in all a lot of intense violence for a girl of perhaps 10 or 11 to be exposed to Jon and one of the key attackers stance go at each other in a rough and tumble brawl that bloodies both men and sends them tumbling off a roof and through a window a tour guy kills a man with a heavy antique clock the president stabs someone in the back with a fountain pen and then gets shot himself a man is killed when a belt full of grenades get wrapped around his neck and detonated another is perforated by bullets a third gets obliterated by explosives after the president is shot Jon must remove a bullet from his torso we see the bloody wound before Jon goes to work on the Wiz inducing task president Sawyer has boxed of Nicorette in his bedside table and he pops a couple of tabs to calm his nerves a political Aid drinks a glass of alcohol aboard Air Force One somebody else takes prescription medication the movie promotes the opinion that there's a thin line between those on the conservative side of the political aisle and a warmongering defense industry that's determined to keep its profits intact two key government insiders end up being traitors if you're worried you're going crazy because you thought the White House already went down once in 2013 let me assure you everything's fine with your mental state just has happened in Olympus Has Fallen our country's capital has once again come under cinematic assault with the executive Mansion again serving as the attackers focal point instead of North Koreans this time it's right-wing extremists and white supremacists who are slipping with ridiculous ease past the country's tightest security and taking control of our nation's big bombs with paramilitary Precision oh and all those John mlan comparisons raised by that last actioner well they go triple here the average Joe hero this go round is one John cow and his hapless hero foils the bad guy's Behavior feels almost beat for beat like any of the past Die Hard films minus Willis patented smirking onliners and plus a brave little girl exposed repeatedly to brutal violence and Mortal threats practically from start to finish the most unfortunate part of such of course is how this film's formula exists and fire action from disaster director extraordinaire Roland Emerich plays on the big screen sure the PG-13 rating means we don't witness the exact kind of gruesome violence that our rated Olympus Has Fallen was chalk full of but don't mistake that comparison for an endorsement we still get a big dose of harsh language paired with merely slightly sanitized blow everything to smithin violence violence that ultimately feels like it's just being mindlessly and mercilessly recycled from one let's blow up the White House movie to the next White House Down is one of the worst movies of the year in the story a policeman guarding the Republican Speaker of the House in Congress visits the White House to get a job protecting the pacifist president while he and his daughter tore the White House ruthless Christian mercenaries take over the building with help from the head of the Secret Service a female agent says the terrorists are made up of Christian Patriot identity and capitalist terrorists who are at the top of the extremist list after much shooting and killing the president figures out how to use a gun and a rocket launcher to kill the enemies evidently the speaker engineered the attack to help the military industrial complex which has been opposed to the president's peace plans White House Down is so bad it makes Olympus Has Fallen look like a masterpiece often the dialogue is so stupid the audience laughed at the movie plot holes abound atrocious acting abounds anti-christian politically correct attitudes abound clunky film making abounds White House Down is a painful miserable experience very strong Pagan politically correct neo-marxist anti-christian anti- capitalist miserable worldview where bad is good and good is bad so the Muslims in the Middle East are good and Christians Republic an and corporations are the enemies of the New World Order 38 obscenities and 18 profanities excessive action violence includes young girl gets hit by a gun and slapped people shot at Point Blank Range bodies blown apart people wounded with shards of glass in them gunshots gun battles rocket launchers explosions American Secret Service military all shot down by so-called Christian patriotic terrorists one brief scene of man looking through a window at a man on top of woman in sexual context and brief sexual inuendo in another scene upper male nudity alcohol use no smoking or illegal drugs and Patriots are the bad guys Christians are the bad guys businessmen are bad guys Republicans are the bad guys president goes from being a pacifist to crazed killer White House Down is so bad in every respect that it makes Olympus Has Fallen look like a masterpiece at some points the dialogue is so stupid that the audience laughed at the movie not with it plot holes abound anti-christian attitudes abound clunky miserable filmmaking abounds if it didn't sound racist the name could be D Jango becomes president White House Down opens with President James Sawyer played by Jamie Fox pulling out troops and offering peace to the Muslims in the Middle East the Republican Speaker of the House ilay raffelson believes Sawyer is weakening America and someone mentions the speaker is just speaking for the military industrial complex John Cal played by Channing todam is The Bodyguard for the speaker to make up for missing his daughter's talent show he gets a friend inside the White House to get him a pass to bring his daughter and to interview for the Secret Service he takes his daughter who's delighted but the interview goes badly because John Cal has never stuck with anything in his life however while he and his daughter are touring the White House ruthless mercenaries take over the building with help from the head of the Secret Service Martin Walker special agent Carol finery played by Maggie gyllen Hall says that the terrorists are made up of Christian identity and capitalist terrorists and that they are at the top of the extremest list in other words the filmmakers are blaming the wrong guys and doing it poorly their whole movie is nothing but globalist propaganda in fact the Studio's production notes actually mention that President Sawyer is is working for Global community in case you didn't get it some of the bad guys are Patriots and others are clearly Christian and have crosses of all types tattooed on their bodies after killing off the Secret Service it also becomes clear that the Secret Service the NSA the Capitol Police and the FBI are all fools the Christian terrorists aren't much better the dialogue in White House Down is clunky the music is awful and the acting is atrocious White White House Down is a painful miserable movie to watch instead of seeing White House Down get a copy of Gerard Butler and Antoine fuka Olympus Has Fallen movies like White House Down are slowly but surely extinguishing the torch of freedom in America and around the world the movies of director Roland Emer who's become a huge left-wing activist have never been the same since he stopped working with producer Dean delin related information it's open season on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue yet again in Roland emer's White House Down a slick High concept actioner that has the unusual distinction of arriving several months after its Bargain Basement knockoff Antoine fukus Olympus Has Fallen itself owing much to such lone man of action Hallmarks as die hard and speed this welcome throwback to an earlier more generously entertaining era of Summer Blockbusters delivers a wide array of Close Quarters combat and large scale destruction all grounded in an immensely appealing star turned by Channing todam and Ace support from imperal podus Jamie Fox though unlikely to rival career best Emir grossers Independence Day and 2012 in the outer reaches of the box office Stratosphere pck should net a tidy profit for Sony helping to Salve the still fresh wounds of after setting aside the question of whether the world really needed a second White House takeover movie in terms of sheer craftsmanship and professionalism White House Down is to Olympus Has Fallen what Raiders of the Lost Arc was to the 1985 Richard Chamberlain Sharon Stone version of King Solomon's Minds though both picks were majority shot far from the actual Beltway Olympus in Louisiana and White House in Montreal emir's film is a far better cell from production designer Kirkham petrick s's enormously impressive replica set to the visual effects by longtime Emerich collaborators vuler Angel and Oscar winter for Independence Day and Mark Wier relatively speaking the new pick is shrewder politically two giving us an enemy from within America's own borders in place of Olympus Central Casting North Korean baddies Emir also offers the screen's most overtly Obama s commander and chief to date in the form of Fox's James Sawyer a self-styled linan who gets his kicks from buzzing the Lincoln Memorial in Marine 1 and even carries a pocket watch that once belonged to Honest Abe himself he's also in the words of one t partyish detractor an academic who never served a day in his life and his controversial plan to withdraw all as troops from the Middle East has ruffled more than a few feathers in the military industrial complex ttm's John Cal by contrast has done his time in the trenches three tours of Duty in Afghanistan to be precise during one of them them he saved the life of a fellow Soldier whose Uncle happens to be the Speaker of the House Richard Jenkins earning Cal his current job as a capital policeman assigned to the speaker's security detail somewhere in those same years Cal's personal life went bust leaving him with an ex-wife and Moody patine kid to try to win back an outcome in a grand scheme of movies like this that can often be hastened by some extravagant Act of heroism strict narrative logicians be forewarned the cheerfully Preposterous coincidences pile up in White House Down faster than the body count just as a certain John mlan found himself in a Los Angeles office building at the exact moment of a Brazen hostage taking so to does Kell turn up at the White House in the hours before some suspicious looking home theater repairmen drop their a equipment and break out the big guns something it must be said that the pick makes Look So Easy you can't help wondering if the pre left the keys to the front door under the mat Cal has come for a job interview to join the president's Secret Service team an idea of which he is quickly disabused by special agent Carol finery Maggie Gyllenhaal a former College classmate who rattles off a detailed inventory of Cal's lifelong failure to live up to his potential one more doubter to disprove adding insult to injury Cal has brought his president obsessed daughter Emily Joey King along for the day in a touching effort to convince her he isn't a total failure when she insists they stick around for an official White House Tour he reluctantly agrees which is right around the time that all hell breaks loose just what these particular bad guys are after is something White House Down reveals gradually with a few red herrings along the way what comes to light relatively early in a modestly provocative Twist on the usual terrorist emo is that they're all disgruntled Americans with ideological axes to grind including an EXC a contractor who did black bag work in Pakistan played in a Sly bit of casting by head Zod Dark 30 interrogator Jason Clark that an about to retire Secret Service Chief is also mixed up in this will come as a surprise only to those who miss the character's introductory scene glowering into the camera as he removes an Old Glory lapel pin and tells his wife he'll be home late tonight or who have never before seen the actor playing said role James Woods for much of the pick's first half Emer keeps the action on a relatively human scale with Cal and Sawyer engaging the evildoers in tight claustrophobic spaces including a dumb waiter shaft and the first kitchen eventually the film makes its way to the South lawn for a spirited loop-to-loop car chase involving the bulletproof presidential limo and to a looming military air strike that threatens to do to the White House what aliens did to it in Independence Day throughout Rich Harbors no greater goal than to keep the audience mindlessly entertained at which he generally succeeds so much so that one is compelled to overlook the niggling particulars like the fact that Woods Clark at Al make for a villain Collective ultimately more incompetent than terrifying where Olympus Has Fallen weighed heavy with rahr jingoism White House Down Prof a more innocent kind of Americana up to and including a climactic set piece that tips its hat without a lick of iron to the War of 1812 the movie's most special effect is without doubt toam who gives Cal a strong rooting interest well before the first shots are fired as in Magic Mike he's ideally cast as a kind of thinking man's lunk head who makes up in common sense coolness under pressure and sheer likeability what he lacks in book smarts and though White House Down fails to include any proper dance numbers ttm's physical Grace is on ample display as he tumbles and Glides through one cacophonous action melee after the next newcomer King also registers a strong impression as the precocious tykee who runs intellectual circles around her dad but also proves a chip off the old block where staring down her captors is concerned while Nicholas Wright offers typically goofy Emir style comic relief as a noit all white house tour guide throwback Mania has been pillaging the visual style and narrative form of 70s and 80s movies for a while now so I guess it was always going to be the case that we'd eventually get a '90s throwback though the word throwback suggests something a little bit more self-aware and ironic than White House Down in which the 9s director to end all 9s directors Roland Independence Day emerage parties like its 1999 aided by writer James Vanderbilt whose career didn't start until the 2000s but has based on the evidence of the film been spending all of that time ready and eager to plunge right into the story tropes and dialogue of that recently bygone era so for example we have divorce John Cal Channing totam whose 11-year-old daughter Emily Joey King a child actress I am beginning to admire very much can barely stand him owing to his non-stop fuckbit toe and tendency to miss important events and expect his far more tolerant than she needs to be ex-wife relle Leever to bail him out Cal is also working right now as the chauffeur for speaker raffon Richard Jenkins of the House of Representatives but trying his mightiest to get into the Secret Service and as the film begins he's finally managed to sweet talk Jenna Jackie giri a highlevel staff member under the vice president Michael Murphy into setting him up with an interview who should prove to be the interviewer though but Carol finerty Maggie Gyllenhaal high ranking agent and apparently a former girlfriend or even more likely a former one night stand who regards Cal's un impressive resume and personal history of never finishing anything he starts as exactly the wrong qualifications to bodyguard for the president now in a traditional '90s disaster structure action film Cal would probably be at least two different people but that's what makes this a contemporary gloss or whatever this percolates the film ends up talking an alarmingly long time to ramp up the action in fact and the opening sequences where we get to know the characters are all deeply tedious and stretched out though it's better than the utterly atrocious parody of human behavior and geopolitical illiteracy that open Olympus Has Fallen also a feature of the '90s action film though probably not one being copied on purpose it feels like they're never going to end when we finally get to the point that a group of rabid militants led by excia operative Sten Jason Clark raging against the president for a whole host of reasons execute a complicated plot to take over the White House Cal and Emily happened to be on a White House tour at that exact time and circumstances play out such that the secret service agent in charge Martin Walker James Woods loses track of his charge and it falls solely to the isolated cow to protect President James Sawyer jimie Fox through the violence and Mayhem that play out through the rest of a very bad day as it turns out that this was all ultimately driven by the ire of the military industrial complex over the president's attempt to bring about peace in the Middle East by removing all US forces from the region which is the next 9s element fallen into place White House Down is emphatically proud to be a liberal message movie though one where the president can brightly point out that removing troops is just for theater because all the actual killing is and will continue to be done by drones and this is not perceived as a problem with the villains all being explicitly tied to right-wing ideologies it used to be very much the case that real world domestic politics informed popcorn movies and not even that long ago all sorts of movies in all sorts of genres used to openly align themselves with usually Democratic or much less often Republican concerns though mostly at a superficial level the last decade and change have witnessed the two-party divide in the S turning unusually bitter while an explosion in the world's Cinema Market has made it desirable for every halfway expensive movie to play for all audiences of all countries and both of the have tended to suck the real world politics out of every major film but Along come Emerich and Vanderbilt cheerfully sliming Republicans while making their obvious Barack Obama analog an all-around terrific guy whose deeply held pacifism doesn't keep him from being an action hero the problem with White House Down you see is not one of plausibility ideology or political messiness it's that the film is contrived and dumb the action lead-footed and CGI addicted in in all the very worst ways it plainly cost more than Olympus but that comes at the price of being bloated and having loggy action the last characteristically '90s touch in Vanderbilt's screenplay is the howlingly bad dialogue which veers between crappy Exposition though in one delightful moment a character turly cuts off another for saying something they both already know and grueling quips that plot off the actor's tongues as if nobody involved had ever actually encountered humor though several of them had at least heard about it for toam after a year of successes as a light touch pseudo comic actor this is particularly disappointing and prove if it was needed that he should be prevented from making action movies worse still it's boring taking too much time out to establish a geopolitical worldview that makes no sense and doesn't lend any Credence to the action while that action itself is dully pedestrian with one of the cuttingedge sparkle of Independence Day which his name dropped or the flat out [ __ ] weirdness of 2012 lesser action movies built around more heinously unconvincing characters are released every single summer but White House Down is still a big slab of tedium in its own right and its Chief Merit as an action film in 2013 is that it has been cut according to a much more sedate Rhythm than most of them in terms of being in the least ways exhilarating though nothing of the sort it's just braing and tepid and the promise that it was going to be a fun buddy action picture fall falls apart on the particularly empty-headed performances of toam and fox draining the last trace of humanity from a movie that had very little to spare in the first place and so it's all just so many noisy moments stitched together indifferently with only the general rockness of the picture cluing Us in that any of this is meant to be entertaining more details of White House Down 2013 film while attending San Diego Comic Con the directors of Olympus Has Fallen and WI White House Down addressed their films releasing in the same year hitting theaters only about 3 months apart in 2013 both Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down chronical attacks on the American president and the White House Gerard Butler leads the former as secret service agent Mike Banning while Channing totam leads the White House downcast as capital policeman John kala with both movies serving as action-packed rides with fun political twists Olympus Has Fallen hit theaters in March 2013 earning mixed reviews from critics the film currently has a lackluster 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes with critics mostly taking issue with the film feeling more or less like a generic action film there are Thrills to be had however and Butler especially proves himself a capable Action Hero Olympus Has Fallen was a box office hit too ultimately birthing the his Fallen franchise which now consists of three films as as seen in the chart above White House Down fared about the same critically as fua film both movies suffer from some of the same problems but emer's film has been criticized for featuring underwhelming action sequences despite its more generic elements Olympus Has Fallen at the very least does feature some hard-hitting violent action in terms of box office White House Down looks like the clear winner on the surface but its budget complicates matters while White House Down earned about $35 million more at the box office it also cost about $80 million more to make while Olympus Has Fallen likely earned a decent profit emir's film may have been looking at a break even point of over 300 million making it a commercial disappointment if one film is to be crowned winner the franchise starting Olympus Has Fallen looks like it comes out on top few information about this film making a silly fun action movie is a difficult balance if the film takes itself too seriously in order to make the stakes feel more immediate then the audience can become uncomfortable for example Olympus Has Fallen if the film is constantly winking at the audience then they can grow tired with a movie that's trying way too hard to be ironic for example Snakes on a Plane director Roland Emer has rarely had trouble striking the right balance Emer knows to Pepper the movie with Snappy funny dialogue log have the good-hearted characters take their situation seriously and never be afraid to go melodramatic over the top and do so in a way that's unashamed rather than Shameless White House Down is Emerich at his best and delivers exactly the movie we've come to expect from the Blockbuster director President James Sawyer Jamie Fox has made the Bold decision to entirely pull out of the Middle East thus delivering a crippling blow to the powerful military industrial complex meanwhile John Cal Channing toam is applying to become a secret service agent not only out of a sense of Duty but also to impress his estranged daughter Emily Joey King who is a bigger fan of the president than she is of her dad after getting turned down for the job father and daughter go on a White House to only to have a group of bad guys storm the building and try to take the president hostage Emily and Cal get separated and while trying to find her he manages to rescue Sawyer Cal must try to find his daughter and get the president to safety while a larger conspiracy swirls around them the plot sounds fairly convoluted and to an extent it is there are a lot of players like Secret Service Deputy finery Maggie jillen Hall Cal's boss and Speaker of the House ralphus and Richard Jenkins leader of the bad guys Sten Jason Clark eccentric bad guy hacker skip Tyler Jimmy Simpson and Secret Service Chief Walker James Woods the script never gets bogged down in its loaded cast and instead uses them to create a fleet-footed narrative that is constantly flipping between the various players rather than resting solely on cow and Sawyer thankfully the strong cast never has us aching to get back to Stronger players even stance whose motives are nebulous and personality consists of being angry and really angry find some life thanks to Clark's intense performance but the film's biggest strength is relying on the chemistry between totam and fox for all of the cheerful stupidity of the plot the clever center of the picture is taking Die Hard giving Cal and Sawyer a buddy cop Dynamic and trapping them inside the White House by Smashing these formulas together and then anchoring it with two charismatic performances everything else can begin to fall into place we know that no matter how serious everything seemingly becomes we have an enjoyable pairing between two characters we care about everyone the film is going for the dramatic moments it's still having fun at times White House Down feels like a fake movie you'd see in a real movie during Cal's interview with finerty she tells him that one of his previous evaluations describes him as having raw potential but does not aim to realize it it's a safe assumption he'll realize it over the course of the two-hour action movie that involves him saving his daughter and the president of the United States just for starters the stakes get even bigger as the movie goes along for Emer the tone of the emotional scenes has to match the scale of the action scenes this is the third time in emerich's filmography in which he's destroyed the White House but demolishing it from the inside out is a nice change of pace most of the action is fairly intimate and involves fast-pace shootouts and fist fights it's only when he steps out the door that the action gets crazy and not necessarily for the best there's a big explosion at the capital the equivalent of a flashing sign saying this [ __ ] just got real even though [ __ ] gets much more real as the movie progresses but Emer feels like he's showing off when he has a car chase that's basically the president's armored limo going in circles on the White House front lawn staying practical is emer's best friend because even though he's been able to pull off terrific visual effects in his past films the CGI in White House Down is underwhelming in addition to the poorly rendered Jets and helicopters The Spectators standing outside the White House front gate all look like they're in front of a green screen as if the film ran out of money to do decent composite work but these are minor quibbles in a movie that is Unapologetic and can laugh along with its audience White House Down never feels like it's talking down to us because it implicitly acknowledges that we're smart enough to recognize the film's overwhelming silliness this isn't Olympus Has Fallen where the the movie misguidedly tries to convince us the dumb action where watching could actually happen Barack Obama nor any other president is going to be firing a rocket launcher out of his presidential limo anytime soon emerich's commitment to the tone even manages to successfully sidestep the pesky problem of a president who's trying to shut down weapons manufacturers in a movie that features plenty of weapons White House Down happily skips along as Macho action RS down in a cartoonish manner that invites us to have fun rather than come up with a pretense to join the party White House Down is a movie from another era it's an Unapologetic throwback to a 1980s guns and muscle flick replete with an entirely implausible base premise campy villains cheesy one liners and a shoehorned in buddy paup the obvious comparison to make is to this March's Gerard Butler vehicle Olympus Has Fallen and it's true the two films have a great deal of rather obvious similarities however White House Down is far more goofy than gritty on the action movie Spectrum Capital policeman John Cal Channing totam is determined to impress his somewhat estranged and US Government trivia obsess daughter Joey King by becoming a part of the secret service directly following his ill-fated interview for the coveted position the White House is taken over by a paramilitary force whose aim is to kidnap the president Jamie Fox and gain control of the building's vast arsenal of weapons Cal must rise to the occasion and against all conceivable odds rescue the president his daughter and not just the nation but the world from the potential onset of a nuclear crisis sounds like an intense high stakes ride but really White House Down is a shut down the brain bit of light-hearted fluff it's easy to liken the film to some of the more well-known actioners of the past most notably Die Hard Andor Air Force One in truth there's simply nothing new or fresh on the table here the script is brimming with often dated zany quips and on liners the relationships are a rehashing of those we've seen before and the villains are a screwy mly crew of hillbilly white supremacists computer hacking super freaks former military psychos and a couple who may just be hobos each plot twist is telegraphed well before it happens in what is essentially a hodgepodge of old school action tropes oh and logic is absolutely not invited to this party another issue is that those who enjoy the grand scale Calamity that this true artist of spectacle often serves up may be disappointed as visually White House Down doesn't actually feel very Roland Emerich like there aren't any big epic swooping scenes of Destruction on tap the action is generally isolated to a few key places and in moments feels disjointed as characters occasionally pop in and out of door doorways with no clear sense of direction there are several hero shots to remind us that the master of disaster is at the helm but the payoff doesn't fulfill the setup ultimately however if you can look past the reverse pyramid of absurdity White House Down is a highly entertaining experience though perhaps not always in the ways that were intended the onliners are so not funny that they Circle all the way around to become funny again these are for the most part charming and engaging performers Fox and toam don't have the electric chemistry that you'd want in a film like this one but they work well enough together it occasionally feels as though each member of the cast is in a slightly different movie but toam fully Embraces his role as a retroaction hero Jason Clark is a standout as his simultaneously comedic and ruthlessly villainous counterpart the key to enjoying this film is going in with the right mindset and the right group of people this isn't the best of the Roland Emer dumb fun offerings and isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination but if you're willing to give over to the Ridiculousness of it all White House Down can be an amusing and again absurd but enjoyable Diversion the only question is are they in on the joke White House Down is a pretty silly rehashing of previously tread action movie territory but if you're willing to laugh along with or even at it it can be a high entertaining experience cast directed
