Chargers Game Reaction and FINAL Roster Predictions: Fehoko vs Rice, Jefferson over Woods?

show start [Music] w [Music] hey what is up everybody Welcome to the guas charge podcast my name is Stephen and I am the host and joining is my guy Tyler Tyler what's up man how you doing tonight I can't tell if I'm bummed or stoked bummed because I watched that game stoked because it's over yeah yeah uh preseason football is behind us we had a real actual called football game today um no Chargers football next week so we're uh officially moving on to the regular season prep and I'm super excited to to get to that and uh should be a lot of fun um so today we are going to recap I don't I know how much we're going to talk about the actual game um but you know we we'll we'll get to that point I think the bulk of our conversation today is going to be centered around predicting the 53 men roster which I think became a lot more interesting today after that performance you know giv the standouts uh from a few people there so should be a lot of fun um on a bit of a serious note uh we did not record this week um my family was dealing with uh a certain health issue that I don't want to give a ton of details out to to anybody but um you know I sent out a tweet that we were not recording I said in the Discord that stuff was going on and I just received so many messages tweets um responses in the Discord um that just really made me feel really uplifted and I think my wife Brook and I really needed that this week from our community that we've built um throughout this this experience um so I just wanted to say thank you to everybody for the messages thank you for understanding uh being patient with our situation um you know it just was it was a tough few days and I was not in the heads space of recording and talking about a preseason football game I think if it were a regular season game you know maybe I would have been able to to power through but um just wanted to say thank you to everybody thank you to Tyler and Alex and arjin and and Alex katson for uh reaching out individually in our group chat as well just really uh means a lot you know that this community that we've built has been so positive that you know I can really count on you guys uh with a situation like this going on and and so sincerely thank you to everybody especially Tyler here um you just really means a lot to to be able to have you guys in my corner like that yeah we're very lucky to have cultivated over you know our fifth season now a really really good community and sure like we're the guys who talk into the microphone we're on YouTube but you guys are the community you know you guys are the ones that are out here supporting us supporting us you know we mostly talk football you know Good Seasons Bad seasons really bad seasons and bad draft picks and all that but when it comes time to Rally I really feel like we've always been able to Rally around each other other fans you know we've done Saturday fundraisers for other members of the community yeah and it was really nice it is always nice anytime this this community this or this guilty disch charge fan base can just take a step back and that there's more than just football and that it's okay if we pause it's okay if we take our time it's okay if we need to put something on hold because you know family and that is certainly more important especially more important than any preseason game that's for sure so um yeah great Community seriously appreciate all your guys support um yeah love to the hgin family of course yeah thank you guys I appreciate that so um had to say something there you know just the support has been uh just unreal in all facets of of the week so um you know we'll make up for it obviously in terms of content we've got a lot of great stuff planned for you guys during the season um we're gonna have a very special interview episode next week um which we'll have more details there going on but uh moving on to football moving on to work has certainly helped me uh you know get through this as well so um like I said not sure how much about the actual game that we're going to be talking about but how a day Tony Jefferson uh we've been kind of waiting Tony Jefferson Shines for somebody to kind of seize that fourth safety spot and you know we'll see if that actually comes to fruition in terms of the roster spot but Tony Jefferson ended today uh 14 total tackles one sack one tackle for loss two passes broken up uh and then obviously the two inter or the one interception and the one force fumble he also had an additional quarterback hit the man did everything uh this is a 10e vet playing to the very final snap in a preseason game uh so just it was uh incredible to see Tony Jefferson out there balling out like he did uh certainly one of the better preseason games that we've seen in in at least in my uh time covering this team certainly you know it's been a minute since we've seen seen a performance like that yeah I that's got to be the one of the biggest stock up games up there with like you know Austin Eckler's games when he was wereing the number three or like big biggest stock up surge especially in a final game I mean we'll talk about the roster prediction of course and we'll see if you know we have him on making the roster if the Chargers do but what a way to say hey don't forget about me he missed some time you know of course he's the older safety maybe JT Woods like oh he's playing corner and maybe JT Woods be the fourth guy maybe he still is but Tony Jefferson especially with Thomas Harper also having ascended over the last few weeks unfortunately not playing tonight really felt like Tony Jefferson was not going to be that guy that's a very tough day to overlook it's a very tough decision if they decide to cut him after that performance everything leading up to tonight yeah like I don't think Tony Jefferson is is making the team I don't think we would have projected that at all after this game it's very very tough uh to make decisions but a lot of players we'll talk about them made it very difficult for us today yeah roster uh projections this year are very very difficult um this team has the most rookies in the NFL on their 90 man roster there's a ton of roster turnover new coaching staff so it definitely is is a difficult one but you know it it's not just the Tony Jefferson game um JT Woods has switched to cornerback fulltime Thomas Harper has been like really good on special teams so it's just that that position is is really difficult to I think Peg down um the other thing which we'll get into here in a minute with the way that the practice squad is structured nowadays if you release a vested veteran they're not subject to waivers so theoretically Joe Ortiz who's has a very strong personal connection with Tony Jefferson could go to him and say hey we want you on this team but like we need some extra flexibility like we're just going to release you and then you're going to come back uh you know at some point next week or the week after so just like hang tight and sign back with us and we've seen that obviously a couple of times previously with these new rules so we'll see if that plays or not into our predictions but that's throwing a wrinkle in there um the other thing defensively I wanted to mention this defensive back RP had been getting their hands on a lot of passes over the first two games and it was just like oh man like they can't come down with that play they can't come down with that play well turnovers are contagious apparently so you get five interceptions one fumble on the day six turnovers in total from the Chargers defense today obviously Tony Jefferson and his to but traymon Morris Brash has the pick six which ultimately you know seals the deal Matt henkens had a great interception Robert Kennedy at the very end there uh so this defense uh I think you know what the a lot of the like preseason guys are not going to start for this team right but we've talked a lot about like this culture of aggression that this defensive staff has created and it's not always going to result in great play it's not always going to result in turnovers every single week but if the defenses can get hot get pressure get some hands on some footballs and the confidence just ramps up you can get a performance like today every so often and that just I think can really carry over into the season even if these guys who were doing the intercepting today are not really going to be starting for this defense in the regular season yeah we had we've talked a lot about Jesse Miner and the lens of the defense and seeing it Through The Eyes of the the defensive backs but today and we haven't really heard this kind of explosion since that Rams practice but today we really got to see all of that and I I've still been impressed with the defensive backs overall you know Dean Leonard doesn't have you know five interceptions but I've always been impressed with him this preseason and other defensive backs but I love interceptions aside I really feel outside of a couple camart tackles today or Miss tackles I should say that there's such a good pairing with the way minor blitzes and it's always we're gonna Blitz quarterback throws short immediate tackle I mean dean Leonard is tackling he's trying to a core special teams player so that's just in his wheelhouse he knows how to do this but he's tackling everyone's tackling on short throws underneath and then oh hey you're gonna throw it try to throw it over our heads or actually try to to test us five interceptions or four interceptions one on Morris Brash as well like the DPS I I don't know how great they're going to be but it feels like they at least understand what they're doing and they're playing ahead of the offense so you know push comes to shove can these guys have the same performance against much better Talent maybe maybe not I don't I don't know but I at least feel confident that they're coached well and they understand and are a great part of a great system and so at minimum I think they are understanding the assignments and clearly like tonight that was the case yeah 100% so it's it's going to be an entertaining defense not a lot of people are expecting a lot out of them but um I think we're certainly higher on the linebacker group of from this team which it was great to see Junior Carlson out there today uh had a couple of really you know impactful physical plays which was for me like I just I I wasn't necessarily expecting him to get out there I was it was kind of a surprise I got a message early this morning that he was going to play um and then he he looked good he looked like Junior Coulson so that was that was great to see um offensively Tyler what Easton Stick struggles again was kind of your your big takea away from from this performance today 26 points obviously had the two big plays from darus Davis and S but if you're if you're talking big takeaway from the offensive side of the wall what what are you starting there oh man you put me on that one uh well I I guess it is the debate of whether the Chargers have themselves seven receivers on the roster and whether they have themselves even a second quarterback on their roster heading into cutdowns and I think those two things are it's funny because those two things are also hand inand because the receiver that now might make it as the seventh guy is the only guy that could work with the quarterback who might not even make this roster yeah um it was an interesting and awful performance from East stick today where I I don't I don't I really don't know what happened at this point not that he was ever Justin Herbert or not that he was ever I don't know Baseline Ryan tanah Hill at his half decent moments but like he's just just been awful and it was Dreadful watching him today somehow Tre Lance was worse but e stick was terrible today unfortunately that is kind of the main takeaway outside of foko who we'll talk about later e stick I I don't there's there's not a second quarterback on this roster it's Justin Herbert stick might survive through 24 hours because they need somebody and they want to see if a Huntley becomes available but they need another quarterback H that was awful and you know we try not to be hyper critical or hyper positive either way but he was God awful like an awful awful awful showing from an awful awful preseason not very good no uh so on the day if you include the semi foko 78 yard touchdown pass 12 of 29 for 187 yards one touchdown one interception two sacks 60 passer rating 6.4 yards per attempt now if you take that big play away which like that could have gone either way it was a 50-50 ball there's no guarantee that that gets caught every single time it was a great fantastic play from Simi foko uh but you're talking about 11 for 28 for 109 yards I think that averages out to less than five yards per attempt um you know I can't do the pure rating obviously but still man it just there was a comment from the broadcast that like the one interception was his one mistake there were several instances where e stick uh just made poor decisions made poor inaccurate throws I I don't know what happened I I know the base largely has not been a fan of e sck for quite some time but the guy that I watched at the end of last season did not roll over into this preseason frankly the guy who played last preseason did not show up in this preseason either so I don't know if it's you know the offense or a lack of confidence or if he's injured but this version of e stick is is not an NFL roster player this is a practice squad player this is somebody you can maybe call up in a pinch type deal um it's just it's tough and you know the the biggest thing for me is like Simi has had some more opportunities more cashable balls thrown his way Bren rice hasn't really gotten a ton of action you know he had a really nice route today he's been getting open on tape he's also working with the first team offense with Justin Herbert um so it's just like we we have so many other things that we I would have liked to see evaluated but because of e sticks play there's just like no way to really do this so I went back and looked at every single Drive the Chargers have had in this preseason um the longest drive that they had was six minutes and 12 seconds which was the drive against the Rams that resulted in the fumble at the one yard line so they have one drive in three preseason games that went over five minutes just one it's impossible to evaluate all of these offensive players who are trying to fight for roster spots when you have consistent three and outs that are taking you know the Chargers had I think seven drives of one and a half minutes or less in the preseason and when you're trying to figure out hey Willis Patrick has shown some good things in practice can we get him some reps no Brendan rice Stone smart Donald Parham all of these tight ends that need reps Cornelius Johnson who's barely getting any time like he needs these reps you can't get extended drives it's it's crushing your development in these kind of moments so it's super unfortunate it's very disappointing after the first game I was like it can't possibly just like this has to just be like a one-off right and then it just was the norm unfortunately for E stick yeah it's it it's so difficult to evaluate any of these receivers thank thankfully you know you were at practice we've been at practice Daniel POA Chris these guys are reporting so we have some idea of like where Brandon rice is in the depth chart and who's you know at least performing well in practice but you really feel like and you hope to get some evaluation in these preseason games against guys you're not facing every day in practice and there's hitting uh you know tackling obviously to the ground what other than Simi foko a couple Jaylen Johnson catches over the preseason what do most of these roster bubble guys have in terms of receiving yards what what Parham smart Johnson 40 yards is their Max between them like over three games is just so difficult and it's not even just you know I couldn't find the guy like down the field which that didn't really happen as often either but you know we're rolling out to our left and we have two options in the Red Zone we have the high option the low option and we throw it straight into the Cowboys Defender like we can't even float it over the top you know there's one play stick had where you know he couldn't quite you know he doesn't have the same arm Talent as Justin Herbert right but there's just so many different times where he can't even get the simpler stuff or or even just make a little bit of a touch throw here or there I mean last week he couldn't even make a a throw to the flat he couldn't even throw a screen I mean it's impossible to evaluate these guys um and you the line doesn't didn't play well either that's not really helping him Leatherwood is on awful has been very bad so it it's just been a disaster this whole East and sick thing has been a disaster we're going to talk about tight ends and the roster next at least with wide receiver I can kind of gauge what they're going to do or at least why foko deserves to make it what am I supposed to do at tight ends you know Hayden Hurst we know he's GNA make it Hospital ball dley will make it obviously but then what am I doing with Donald Parham what am I doing with stone smart what am I doing with any of these you know Zack hindes Luke Benson no way to evaluate these guys I don't have anything yeah it's it's tough and I don't want this to pile on e that's why we're here today but you have to talk about it right because they it it's affecting the the entire roster so you know some of these players have have earned the right through practice some of them have earned the right through special teams and things like that but when you're trying to figure out you know wide receiver six and tight end four running back four even which I think is probably wrapped up but in theory like Elijah doson and Isaiah Spiller has have had at least you know a an outside chance of like Earnie a roster spot well you know they they don't get any real opportunity to carry the football because there's no rhythm on offense so it just I I don't know what happened I don't know where e sticks head is at confidence-wise I just it sucks to watch man it just it was it was disappointing regardless of what you think of him as a player this was a significant fall off from E stick and last last preseason the Chargers offense could at least function and this offseason uh it has been basically untenable outside of two big plays they have zero things to show for it um all right let's get to our Ross prediction before we get there really quickly have to tell you guys about our new friends at prize pick uh this has the star players I felt like heading into today's game there were about 48 49 players locked into the roster and we'll dive into some of them who are interesting but um we'll spend more time on on filling out the rest of the roster here uh we do have a Google sheet for our video audience for our audio audience we'll be sure to explain it as best as we can alrighty let's bring it up Offensive Roster Cuts and see what we got this is the older one so give me one second to switch to our new one okay so quarterback wise I do think e stick will at least stay on the roster like you said for 24 hours I think he's essentially kind of like the back stop where if some of these other quarterbacks who they might like are not available then they'll just you know stick with sick no pun int I guess um and see what happens next year your thoughts on qb2 for uh Tuesday's roster Cuts I don't think they cut him out right I I I think they would consider holding on to him even with a Tyler Huntley if he becomes available if someone becomes available I think they still hold on to stick but that's a shaky one and that could be a Tyler Huntley has to ramp up for half the season whatever it is and maybe we make a move there uh someone gets injured we got a cut stick Elevate someone um to the active roster so I think stick survives Cuts but I I genuinely think he could also be gone by noon the next day yeah I I think that's totally fair and until we see the other move I think we kind of have to pencil him into the though yeah yeah I agree there all right offensive line wise I feel like this is pretty straightforward um obviously you have the starters ran Slater Zion Johnson Bradley boszman who returned to practice this week Trey pipkins Joe Al uh Jordan mcfaden Brenan heus and Jamari Sol who also returned to practice this week to me this ninth spot which I feel like has been kind of wrapped up for a few weeks here is Foster cell um he's played left tackle Right Guard right tackle and I think playing at least well enough to Merit a ninth roster spot just because he has that tackle flexibility are you also pening Foster shell into the roster yeah if I had to pick it's definitely Foster sell if there ends to be another offensive lineman K totally get it but over Leatherwood absolutely yeah Leatherwood has been a desaster he was bad again today um Tyler mclellen got injured today I wish him nothing but the best um you know hopefully that that injury is is not as serious as it looked um I would have been interested to see a little bit more there but um yeah for whatever reason they just kept on trying out Alex lewood even though he was stinking it up in the preseason okay tight end wise we mentioned this very very interesting here Will disly Hayden Hurst obviously locked and loaded some fantasy folks think Hayden Hurst can lead the team in targets apparently which I think is ridiculous um considering will disley I think has a good chance of out targeting him as a tight end um third tight end wise four tight end wise Tyler what's your what's your thought process here yeah this one is is very tricky again because of the lack of evaluation it's very difficult for us I okay see the thing is that Sim foko makes this interesting as well because Donald Parham does not play special teams so you could have Simi foko if he makes the roster play Stone smarts role on special teams and be the sameish kind of role bigger body very athletic both receiving options um perhaps Simi foko plays that stone smart role and they go with Donald Parham instead especially for the Red Zone stuff I just just I I just feel like this off season especially with some of the nagging injuries it really does feel like Don parm has been an afterthought uh whereas before I don't think he has been as much he's also been injured many off Seasons yeah but it really does not feel like this offseason they really made him a priority um in any way shape or form definitely not in the pre season so I think I would go Stone smart here but I would understand if they went with Parham here because maybe simy foko is the Special Teams adjacent for ston smart there yeah the Donald Pam part of this equation is tough because I think you could make a real argument that he is the most talented pass catcher at tight end um but he just we he struggled with injuries throughout this off season he has not progressed as a blocker and he doesn't play special teams like Tyler mentioned lit I I was surprised to see that he literally has zero special team snaps on his resum like not even like field goal protection or anything ston smart is a core four special teams player for this team and Ryan ficken has a very very real say on the back end of the roster but it's not just that I I think ston smart has taken a pretty significant step forward in his development especially as a blocker um when I was at practice the third time you know they the Char the Chargers did this uh tight end pass blocking drill where they had to block block Edge rushers linebackers and safeties and ston smart was Hayden HST didn't practice that day but ston smart was the second best blocking tight end that I watched that day and param unfortunately was probably the worst so it's just the traits have not match the production have not matched the health so I think tight end 3 is very comfortably ston smart the debate I think is can they keep a fourth one um and maybe that's where Donald param can can carve his name and so he can revisit that if we want to fill out the rest so let's at least have ston smart for now yeah okay yeah I think that's pretty comfortably Stone smart has tight end three and I I think that we were going to talk about this on the show Tucker Fisk would have been the fullback if we had discussed a fullback would have been Tucker Fisk which a couple people are mentioning in the chat but he was hurt so he didn't play today so that makes things tricky yeah Tucker Fisk uh very pleasingly surprised of his performance um against the Rams last week think that he could be like a legit fullback for them obviously they went out and and you know signed him so I think there is a chance that he still makes it but he didn't practice all week didn't play today I don't think that's somebody that you really have to like fight for making the roster when you need some other flexibility spots so you know the the Chargers are playing anybody at fullback right now Jordan mcfaden Carson barnhard Scott madlock all took RS a fullback um Trey Morris Brash should some physicality and juking ability on that interception maybe he can get some fullback snaps so I think for now I'm probably leaving Tucker Fisk off the roster and hoping that he can get back to the practice squad because I am intrigued there but I just don't think we saw enough in the one preseason game to be like yeah like sign me up for that guy on the roster yeah and I don't think he's especially as a late signing it's not like they have to hold on to him or worried about claims I think they'll be just fine so hopefully he makes it I love a good old 44 as a fullback back there I just felt right to see a 44 there yeah um so yeah I but I agree all right uh running back wise Gus Edwards JK Dobbins kamani Vidal locks Vidal didn't even play today I don't know if that's injury related or if that's like his rol is just locked up related um but very clearly the third best running back on the team the interesting spot here is Jarett Patterson's case who played well into the fourth quarter today um special teams pass catcher that's kind of his role he's been the rb3 when Vidal has been out taken a lot of first team reps do you think he makes the roster Tyler I do I do think they go with four I think all three of the guys in front of Patterson if but all the third guy have question marks and injury question marks as early as this off season I just think they've leaned into him too much he's played too much first team in practice I think he does end up making it but this is definitely a spot we could revisit later on um in this show even today if we feel like we have to move different players but I do think that even though I do feel he's safe he's the fourth most safe or the least safe of the four yeah I I lean towards having him making the roster but I think we can we can revisit that like you mentioned um yeah people asking about Isaiah Spiller in the chat um I was probably the worst running back on the Chargers in the preseason you know Elijah doson showed some real burst and growth this year I hope he can be back on the practice squad but uh Isaiah spillard man just like never really got into a Groove you know maybe it was a Playbook thing I don't really know but that was that was stuff to watch all year all right uh receiver wise uh we obviously have DJ CH Josh Palmer lad mcon as the three starters there's been some debate about DJ ch's role I I don't know what to tell anybody who thinks otherwise he is Comfortably their starting X wide receiver it's not even a question so he is not getting cut he is very much an important piece on this team uh Quenton Johnson darus Davis we both have making it when I made this I I did have Brendan rice on this roster uh I think heading into today he was in my opinion a roster lock he's been getting like I mentioned the reps with the first team offense um impacting the the practice field with Justin Herbert but Simi foko has been the most productive player among this group in the preseason he's been impactful on special teams he blocks his ass off in the Run game this is a much closer debate than I would have thought a couple of weeks ago when I just had Brennan rice as a as a lock so Tyler what are your thoughts about rice versus foko as wide receiver six in terms of the preseason Simi foko is by far in a way the more deserving player to make it um between the two of them the team probably feels differently overall in that Brendan rice is their their sixth guy I do think Sim foko now makes it as the seventh guy I don't see why you'd want to remove him from your roster at minimum he will contribute on special teams he plays well on special teams he's kind of what you want as the backend wide receiver for your team you know he's not the guy you invested a ton in he's not a superstar at least not yet but he plays special teams you can start him in a pinch he can catch you one good touchdown all go crazy for it and and he has been productive again I don't know what the receiving Tes are but I'm pretty sure it's like Simi foko 160 yards to the next closest maybe being 60 in the preseason and this this kind of feels different like I genuinely do believe unlike a Bandy or a prle or whoever it's been in the past I do feel like foko actually has a genuine shot to make it and and should make it and then Jim Harbaugh of course came out this this past week and said you know competitors welcome and and Simi foko is starting to separate himself again I'm not really entirely sure from who definitely from Cornelius Johnson I'd think I think seven make it which is a honestly I don't know I don't know we talked about this right we had them making seven but I we said Cornelius making it yeah but absolutely my question my only question even though I think Brendan rice makes it is they feel they're very high on bran rice obviously plenty of first team reps great in practice he did to the seventh round in the draft I'm curious what they think they could do in terms of playing the game yeah because like nobody drafted Brennon rice till the seventh round for whatever reason maybe it was a medical thing so that might change things because obviously he's healthy but like the NFL didn't want him until the seventh round when the Chargers took him and if the Chargers didn't take him how far would he have fallen would he have been undrafted I don't know yeah so I'm curious what they think the NFL will do when they're trying to play this game yeah the when you're talking about like stashing a a player on the practice squad there's obviously a lot of factors here I I think semi foko would comfortably make it through waivers easier and I also kind of wonder if Brendan rice if he gets cut and he doesn't get picked up on waivers does he go you know what I can go do better than wide receiver six on another team so I do Wonder just like from his you know Stannis is a college player he's Jerry Rice's kid even though he was the seventh round pick like most people thought he was going to be at an early day three if not late day two pick I wonder really what are their chances of bringing Brennan rice back I think they're honestly kind of low and from that standpoint I think that to me means that they should keep rising and you know we when we did the initial 53 was like you got to keep these young guys because you just you have so much uncertainty I still think that that logic applies I still think they need to invest in Brendan Rice's development so even if he wasn't like super productive in the preseason Greg Roman did say it's not really his fault you know this week in in practice so you know he's been getting a lot of you know positive play in practice with Justin Herbert at quarterback it was not great with East stick but I I still think there's enough there for me to try and keep brenn and rice the debate is is simy somebody who can pass through waivers is he somebody who wants to pass ravers also like I think it's just you got to kind of play that game I think for now I would think it's seven receivers over the four tight ends if that's kind of how we want to look at this just because I I don't think Donald Parham has done really anything to kind of Merit a spot over foko so I'm cool with having foko in there for now and if we need to free up a spot when we do defense and we've got all we gotta hurry that part up um but I think we put Simi foku in there for now yeah I agree there all right so we'll go Simi foko I'll just Place him here because why not yeah and yeah I I agree and if if they if you want to chalk it up as it's six receivers and one returner fine whatever yeah that makes you feel better yeah so obviously uh Chargers are very set at kicker punter and Long Snapper with Cameron Dicker JK Scott and Josh Harris uh so right now we have 28 players rostered including offense and the Specialists uh let's get to the defensive players next year Tyler sounds Defensive Roster Cuts good all right so we know K Mack but depri Joey wosa to lead toi palu are going to make the roster I didn't know this was a thing until today but the Chargers can place two players on inur reserve before Tuesday that will be able to return at some point throughout the season so it used to be if you place a player on inur reserve before roster cuts that player season is over and they're they they're on your team they're just not they're on Ino Reserve they're not on the roster I think Chris rump if the old rules applied I think they would keep him and then Place him on short-term in of Reserve after that on Wednesday but they don't have to do that so they can place Chris rum on that right away and be able to essentially keep him on the roster I think that is what happens I think traymon Morris Brash has done enough to make this roster he's worked with the first team defense he had a pick six today he's had a sack he's had run defense he's had everything he's really shown a lot of progression um um I'm very excited to watch the film back because he had a couple nasty spin moves today that resulted in pressure on Tre Lance I think Morris Brash has done enough for me to pencil him in on this roster um especially with Chris rump being able to go towards IND Reserve right away so I'm I'm excited about his development tremond Morris Brash that is and I think he's he's earned a roster spot at this point okay that makes things spicy because okay so just looking at what we have currently we have 20 we had 28 from the offens and special teams which means we have 25 we could add to the defense yes we only have one spot left based on who's right here right now that's including TI tar because we already had him you added him to the the chart which means we might be short of safety so let's tentatively put traymon Morris Brash but we can come back to it for sure this I believe he's earned it he definitely has earned it that is for sure yeah okay so we think can work things but yeah I think Morris Brash I think has has earned the right to be on this roster MH okay uh defensive tackles we're thinking six there as well it sounded like it was only five spots for a while but then TI your tart you don't go get him immediately after he becomes available and yeah drop him yeah I I think I think we're comfortable or the team is comfortable with the five being Puna Ford Morgan Fox terar Scott mlock and Otto abona got a pretty big shout out from Jesse M today saying he's taking a huge jump he didn't even play today like he was considered a starter who did not play so that is essentially locked up Scott mattlock did play today for what it's worth although I feel like I saw him more on offense freakingly than defense um what are the chances that they cut justiny boy because he has not really had a strong camp or preas season like I would have hoped he was a fourth round draft pick I think they again need to invest in his development but what are the chances that e boy gets cut on Tuesday I I still think it's a very small chance but the fact there that there is a chance really speaks to how lackluster of a preseason and offseason it's been for him I don't recall his name getting mentioned very often in any practice recap articles I don't recall saying many good things or or seeing many good things from him in the season G quiet very very quiet on that front if he told me he's been injured this whole time and wasn't playing I'd go oh okay I thought I was mistaken but no he's just flat out not doing anything not doing all that much they've been very honest I think with him when they when they took him when they when I think it was um Elston that spoke about him said hey he does one thing really well right now but he's got a ways to go we're going to develop him he's got some great attributes Etc so they they do see him as that develop develop develop project but I think after watching watching what they've seen you go out and get tart and because we we got to hurry this up and we can't just wait for a boy be so I still think they keep six here but yes a bo be is It's Tricky but they did draft him they did draft him very high yeah so I think that you know relatively speaking so I think he does stick yeah and this this position is one that it takes a minute for guys to figure it out so I think he's I think I'm leaning towards him being safe but I I do wonder if there's a chance again just because of traymon Morris's Brash and and these other guys who have come on strong that they're that there is at least a chance that he does k cut um at linebacker no no real comments um Denzel Perryman and Darion Henley are going to start for this team Junior Colson is gonna play a lot Troy Dy was recruited by Ryan ficken and is a very crucial special teams player and he also did not play today by the way so this team really values him he's taken some first team reps from time to time uh he's very very safe Nick nean is interesting not in the sense that I think he'll get cut but he has not practiced since the Seahawks game um that could be another spot that is set for the injured reserve aspect of things here if they wanted to kind of play that game I don't know where his health is at but like we have not seen him practice since the Seahawks game so it's been a minute I don't know if his injury is severe enough where he is would be better Suited for injur Reserve because Chris R like we know he's going to miss time Jim Harbaugh said that but Neiman I think could be an interesting injury reserve stash as well just wanted to throw that out there but his roster spot is very very safe in my opinion yeah regardless locks if Neeman has to go on short-term I are fine but yes these five and only these five although I think Shane Lee has been awesome in the preseason just yeah can't keep six yeah practice squad stash for sure Shane Le has been very very good yeah um quarterback wise no real surprise here either Asante Christian fton jir Taylor are locked and loaded into the starting spots Dean Leonard cam Hart and tar still locked and loaded into the backup spots uh tar still didn't even play today he like so I thought that was interesting because Dean Leonard and cam Hart played today Dean had another you know very solid first half I would say as well um but this is this is your starting six um the interesting thing this week is like I mentioned JT Woods has been taking outside cornerback snaps which I think affects his ability to potentially make the roster or not but I think those six are are relatively safe yeah I agree I the JT Woods situation now playing a lot of outside corner on the one hand you can make the argument that hey look you can they're trying multiple things because he's going to be on the roster they're going to try out different things with him on the other hand you can't do one of those things well enough why would you make the roster and he's certainly not a special teams Ace um he's not a guy that's known for his flexibility positional flexibility so yeah I I I certainly don't put him here as a corner that's for sure yeah yeah all right uh safety potentially the most interesting one here um Tony Jefferson when you zoom out I think we have to remember that this is the guy who was taking 13 defense snaps throughout the entirety of training camp and then he was either injured or was getting Veteran Day offs and then he exploded and had this like all great performance from the preseason that I've like literally never seen in my entire life so it's a tricky evaluation a lot of people rushing to say that he he earned a roster spot and he very well might have but again the Chargers could play the game here and put him onto the practice squad and then Elevate him when needed and then down the road they can put him onto the active roster what are your thoughts with JT Woods SL Tony Jefferson SL we also need to figure out another spot because we don't have one because of traymon wars crash it's so tricky I they can't go into the regular season with three safeties AG they got to have a fourth one if jaw Taylor could play some safety maybe but they need a fourth safety we have a blank spot here that needs to go to a safety you know unfortunately thrn James not consistently healthy as well Gilman's missed some time and Finley is I think going to be very good but we still don't know a ton about him they need another person here which makes me feel like traymon Morris Brash would have to be cut unless we cut someone on offense of course then we go back to the receiver question but then you know who am I keeping over Simi foko or do I keep someone over Patterson super super tricky here between the two I was assuming that JT Woods was going to be the guy most of the way but the performance tonight and then them changing what JT Woods is doing suggests that well honestly it suggested that Thomas Harper was going to be that guy if he had played tonight and he played well I think it's Thomas Harper I think Thomas Harper makes it yeah he didn't play and supposedly is injured so it's It's Tricky flip a coin I don't know we can flip a coin on the show for for Jefferson versus Woods yeah I I think it's so difficult because JT Woods has truly been nothing but a disappointment so far in the NFL so what are we holding on to him for more and yet as you mentioned he was playing over Jefferson for almost all of training camp like he was the guy who was out there he has been playing special teams at least so that's a thing but is is he going to ever have a performance like Jefferson had today can he do what is Jefferson playing special teams by the way did Jefferson play special teams today yeah um not today but he was playing special teams in practice when I was there oh jeeez what I even do he was he was definitely on kickoff and he was definitely on punt that I remember I think I would go with oh God I think I would go I would go with Jefferson here I think I would go with Jefferson here because I think you mooving you moving Woods to Corner is not a good sign for your ability to make the rosters a safety no and like he I think he looks much more comfortable like quarterback and I think if you can keep him on the practice squad I'm interested in seeing how that goes yeah but he he was not anywhere close to like before today in terms of safety evaluations Thomas Harper was leading that category now I think it's Jefferson just because like the impact today was crazy so I think if we're putting in a fourth safety it is Tony Jefferson but then we have to figure out where that extra spot comes from you heard I don't want to put like words in your mouth or words in in your source's mouth but like you heard that they wanted to keep five Ed rushers because MD DPR ain't playing special teams and neither are clear and Joey Bosa so I do think they need that fifth Edge rusher spot and I think traymon Morris Brash has shown enough to to Warrant that spot so now it becomes in my mind I'm looking at traymon moris Brash as safe like I I think this final roster spot to me comes down to Jefferson or Simi foko and I think you're trying and I guess Jared Patterson can be thrown in that that ring too but I think traymon Morris Brash is important enough on special teams and on defense where I'm I'm keeping him and trying to find the other spot elsewhere oh boy I yes there was an ed and is a fifth Ed Edge spot that they were looking into the calculus changes when you lose Chris rumph then Andrew farmer and then Tai Shelby so I don't know since then how things change because the three other guys competing for that spot and then for a minute there sa on Jackson who came back it really just came down to Morris Brash I think Morris Brash has done enough to Warrant a roster spot I don't think that they fill it initially with Morris Brash I think they keep the force safeties and I think that Morris Brash is someone they hope clears waivers and then comes back and if not they might feel comfortable with Collins and if not they do have four Edge rushers still and technically two legal play special teams and if not Chris rum could also Chris rum could also just come back in two weeks like I don't actually know what his his longterm outlook is IR has to be four weeks well I mean like if he's not going on IR right like if he's like hey you have three weeks and you're just going to miss week one you yeah um I I'm not cutting Sim foko though I I don't think I think Morris Brash still has a better chance of clearing wavers than foko in my opinion okay man I think this is probably our biggest like podcast disagreement in a very long time it's it's It's Tricky I the honestly the easiest answer is to cut Jared Patterson but you tell me he's not making it yeah I can't because from our perspective of making a roster but then like they've had him at rb1 like or with the first team so many times so yeah yeah yeah Patterson would be my choice to cut but I I I have a really hard time seeing them do that the easiest copout answer would just be cut Tony Jefferson and say hey they're going to do like the veteran vested veteran thing but how can you cut Tony Jefferson after what he did today and even even if it's not Tony Jefferson it could just very also be JT Woods like I think there's a fourth safety in there somewhere whoever it is it just depends on who it ends up being yeah are we gonna cut Jared Patterson and be super wrong if that's where we're wrong I don't know I just I think I think this team really really likes Draymond moris that's the thing well yes 100% agree they he's been shouted out he deserves to make it yeah but like okay yes chat Tony Jeff not Tony Jefferson well Jefferson yes uh Jared Patterson is definitely I I think he is clearing waivers right like he's he's the guy who clears waivers he's a journey man at this point he would clear he has the most investment from the team so far this entire offseason yeah like he if VI all didn't show up last week peris Patterson was rb3 he's so my eyes tell me that the Easy Choice here is Patterson but Greg Roman loves Jared Patterson like he's he speaks about him unprompted every single press conference um he's gotten first team reps the entirety of training camp you know that's who I would choose but that's tough man I I I I feel like this team is not going to cut traymon Morris Brash like I I think that's not really the debate for me to me it's four running backs or seven receivers I think you got I think we I think we have to make this cut on offense I think that's I think it's Patterson or it's foko or rice I think one of those guys is is your last cut that's that's how I I mean yeah in theory feeling and interpreting scenario Patterson gets claimed they could just have Dotson be their yeah roster stash yeah but Greg roin loves him man all right we can it it feels so stupid because I feel like cutting Patterson is is dumb because he's actually the person who touches like he's plays with the first team offense okay ah H all right we the bigger risk on waivers the bigger risk on waivers is Simi foko yes but Jared Patterson has been getting much more reps on first team offense and play special teams semi foco also play special teams I think we just kind of bite the bullet and and cut Patterson and if we're wrong at least we're betting on Simi foko and tremond Morris Brash to be wrong yeah Morris Brash would give you an undrafted free agent who makes the roster so which feels you know right obviously okay Greg R's gonna have three running backs and seven receivers let's do it uh that is how they're constructing this offense oh man okay that was tough this is the toughest like roster construction I think we've ever covered in my opinion yeah and half of it because Tony Jefferson came out of nowhere and had an insane game so yeah this is but I like I like tra Morris Brash making it if we find out more about Chris rump he's like oh they're fine like he's fine he'll be fine in two weeks then oops but not doing the practice squad guys I'm we're not doing the practice squad we can talk about some other guys later on so we're we're gonna live react to the actual roster cuts at that point we can we can talk about who we want on
