oh jackets what is going on everyone and welcome to rec talk and we're finally down uh to the position group I've most look forward to breaking down I would consider myself a quarterback guy played quarterback um and we've got a lot to talk about uh with this competition now with that being said I had someone reach out to me about membership um I guess on your phone it doesn't show a join button there's now a link in the description of the video if you want to become a member you can click that link that's going to give you some members only content including videos emojis for the live chat and now I've even set up um membership time denomination so if you've been a member for one two three months you get a different icon next to your name so everyone knows you're a supporter of the channel so definitely check that out if you want to support the channel in other ways there's a PayPal Link in the cash out Link in the description and um doesn't cost anything to subscribe or like the video so let's get into it well let's get into who are we losing who's coming in obviously we're losing Jeff Sims um you know a lot of people kind of wondering exactly what happened there um Jeff Sims gets hurt during the Virginia game last year he was nursing an injury from the Duke game um seemed like during the Miami game he was cleared to come back in but refused to a lot of people were really upset with that I've given my opinion on it I if he in his mind you know there's a coaching change he's going to hit the portal anyways he's not going to want to exacerbate an injury and limit where he can transfer I you know I honestly totally get that is it bad for Georgia Tech yes but this is a kid who's very talented and that's also uh one of the more contentiously debated um things for Georgia Tech fans and it seems like most Georgia Tech fans seem to think he's hot garbage I don't subscribe to that I don't think he was coached well at all between Dave patnode Jeff Collins chip long um don't I don't I don't think we put him in a position to be successful and what we're going to see is there are really a lot of similarities between Jeff Sims and Haynes King as far as I think not being developed well at all with Haynes King that you know we're talking about Jimbo Fisher so what did Jeff Sims do in his career at Georgia Tech I threw for 4464 yards 7.1 yards an attempt through for 30 touchdowns but also very high 23 interceptions with those 30 touchdowns that came on 633 attempts um I don't have it written down here he probably had right around a 50 completion percentage um it is a loss you know the other thing is uh Jeff Sims also ran for 1152 yards and 11 touchdowns he was a threat with his legs um we probably that was best displayed against North Carolina last year when we ended up blowing them out and in the pit and Duke game you know we really focused on his running ability now we talked about it in the running back video Sims was also our third leading rusher so not only do you lose your starting quarterback you also lose uh your third leading rusher so we'll see how he does at Nebraska with Matt uh rule I think he's going to be pretty good I think the guy actually is a really good quarterback and I hope I'm nothing but the best now let's talk about Haynes King Haynes King highly coveted and sought after recruit at a Long View Texas his father was the coach at his high school and I was actually listening to some stuff his father's actually from Louisiana but wanted to get excuse me into coaching and he says uh look the only way you get to be a high school coach in Louisiana is if some high school coach dies I mean they're written a lot of movement and I don't want to wait on anyone to die let me go to Texas where there's a ton of high schools I can be a coach at so ends up working out becomes a coach at Longview High School you know develops his son and his son was an absolute stud Haynes King was an absolute stud in high school leads Long View to their first excuse me state championship at Longview in like 80 years um through I mean like 7 000 plus yards ton of like 80 touchdowns um he was a four borderline five-star recruit I think he was a number five dual threat UM quarterback in his class and ton of expectations on him when he came into Texas A M you know he was kind of looked at as a guy who could be the next Johnny Manziel at Texas A M and it just didn't pan out for him now I've said uh I don't think it was developed well um Jimbo Fisher seems to be a guy that's just very set in his ways you know he was calling plays there as well and seemed to be a guy that that premeditated his play calling um or it was just set on it like hey we're just gonna run these five plays we're not really going to take into account uh what the skill set of our players dictates though they were very talented you know they had number one recruiting class in the country a few years ago famously Nick Saban uh and Jimbo kind of got into it um but just never panned out very inconsistent Haynes was at Texas A M you know looked very good in games like Alabama last year struggled against like Sam Houston State and he threw for like 340 yards three touchdowns but also two interceptions which you should you shouldn't be throwing interceptions against Sam Houston State which fun fact Jordan Yates was the quarterback at Sam Houston State so um um also a kid that's been had to fight through injury fractured his leg last year um and let's just look at it he played in six games last year had 104 completions on 187 attempts about 55 percent uh completion percentage through for 1220 yards seven touchdowns but again six interceptions nearly a one-to-one touchdown to interception ratio uh ran for another 83 yards and a touchdown so you know what happened with King at Texas nm1 there was a ton of pressure in fact I don't know a school you know maybe in Alabama LSU one of these big SEC schools that you're going to have as much pressure as Haynes did at Texas A M in conjunction with not being developed well so that's who we get in with Haynes king um so let's talk about this quarterback battle there's a heck of a quarterback battle going on between three quarterbacks obviously we've talked about Haynes King Zach pyron who started at the end of last year before he got hurt and then Zach Gibson now not many people giving Gibson really any chance of winning this job um but I'll tell you this I do think the guy who shows the most in practice is going to win this job and if it's Zach Gibson it'll be Zach Gibson where in the past it was just Jeff Sims and there was a zero percent chance anyone else was ever going to start at quarterback and we saw what that meant for our team um you know we just didn't have anyone pushing Sims to get better so let's talk about um I guess first Zach Gibson so Zach Gibson like Georgia Tech was the tale of two teams last year Zach Gibson was really the tale of two quarterbacks um after uh Jeff Sims goes down he comes in in the Virginia game and looks about as bad as a quarterback can look in his first series I think he took like a sack looked like he was standing in cement and then throws a pick and famously Runs Out of Bounds on the last play when we're you know within a touchdown of tie in the game um two keys credit you know we bring Zach pyron off the scout team get him ready to play gets hurt Gibson comes back in against Miami throws another interception in his first series back um and you're just thinking man there's zero hope for this kid ever developing into a quarterback they can win games for us then you get the North Carolina and Georgia games looking at his stats here last year Gibson threw for 589 yards a touchdown and two interceptions so he had a two to one interception to touchdown ratio completed about 54 percent of his passes but listen to this 72 percent completion percentage against uh North Carolina threw for 174 yards so he didn't throw for a touchdown didn't throw for a ton of yards but he completed a lot of passes he kept the offense on time and he kept moving um I would have lost every bit of money that I will ever earn if someone would have said do you think Gibson could beat North Carolina no there's no chance it's a testament to Chris winke I think I've I keep saying this like in every video I think Chris Winky's the most underrated position coach in college football right now he's a great coach um and look he got Zach pumachon also didn't mention him Zack pumanchon transfers to UMass not a lot to talk about there he was really more of a running back than a quarterback for us but also a testament to Zach Gibson look he's stuck in there he got better um you know he was coachable and uh also looked really really good against the University of Georgia number one team in the country last year National Champion um you know that game was tied going into half and there was a lot of people sweating in Athens so don't necessarily sleep on Zach Gibson do I think he'll win the job no but um he is a definitely a serviceable quarterback now the attention is really on Haynes King and Zach pyron you know who's going to win this job between these two kids we interviewed Zach pyron on the channel definitely go check that out if you haven't um if you haven't seen that I'll link that in the description of the video as well now Zach pyron another kid highly recruited studies a three-time state champion he actually transferred high schools he went from a triple option type of offense to a um more conventional High School offense to kind of show he could be a pocket passing quarterback four-star he was a number 18 quarterback in his class played in three games last year so we talked about bringing him in off the scout team and look the kid looked very good especially for a kid that says young true freshman like him just seemed to know where to go with the ball made very good decisions and when we go over his stats it's not going to sound like that but stats don't necessarily tell the whole story so at 49 completions on 82 attempts so almost 60 percent completion percentage which has to be the highest completion percentage since Paul was coaching here through for 565 yards 6.9 yards an attempt three touchdowns on three interceptions and ran for another 127 yards and two touchdowns now that one-to-one touchdown to interception ratio is to me what doesn't tell the whole story one of those um it was a 50 50 ball which I don't have a problem with that this the defender ended up beating the wide receiver and coming up with the ball second one was uh interception he threw while having a broken collarbone which check out the interview that I'm I've Linked In the description uh I talked with him about that specifically and then one of them um was just a bad interception against Virginia Tech um but the kid was very head so you could tell this kid just has confidence ton of skilly six three um now 208 pounds he looks a lot stronger than even when I interviewed him several months ago and I do think it is Zach's job to lose um now when you you're kind of comparing him with Haynes King and even thinking of Jeff Sims when you're talking about quarterbacks that are mobile um Haynes King uh is reported to have four or five flat speed which is incredible for the quarterback he might be just as fast as Jeff Sims or just as athletic Zach pyron also very athletic there's two types of quarterbacks when you're talking about this category there's quarterbacks um well let me say it this way there's running quarterbacks and there's quarterbacks that can run and there's a massive difference between those two um Lamar Jackson is a running quarterback um Russell Wilson is a quarterback that can run now they both can win you a lot of games you know Lamar Jackson MVP in the league right my preference is to have a Russell Wilson quarterback that has the ability to run the difference is a running quarterback is looking to run first you know really it's is my first read open or not if not I'm running with the football which really to me is what Jeff Sims was I think that's kind of his identity uh time will tell at Nebraska how true that is but when Jeff Sims did the best at Tech which was after key took over his interim think of that pit game is when we used him as a running quarterback and didn't force him to just sit in the pocket and make reads which is what we kind of forced him to do most of his time at Tech also North Carolina a run for a ton of yards against North Carolina probably the best game of his career now I don't think Haynes or Zach pyron are running quarterbacks I think they're both quarterbacks that can run their quarterbacks that are looking to throw first go through their progressions and as more of a last resort if they're forced to or if nothing's open they will uh take off with it and run the football now who's going to win the quarterback this quarterback battle um I've listened to the interviews you know all of these quarterbacks have given interviews you can on the Georgia Tech YouTube channel and I'm liking a lot of what I'm hearing if you listen to Chris winky you hear him over and over again talking about the quarterback has to be the toughest guy on the field which is not it's kind of counter-intuitive to how most people think of the position generally you think of quarterback wide receivers as kind of the Madonnas the the softer people on the field but I do think you have to you have to be very tough to play the quarterback position mentally and physically obviously now both quarterbacks coming off a fairly serious injuries Haynes king with a leg fracture Zach pyron with a collar full collarbone break seemed to be 100 recovered from that I think Haynes King has a slightly higher ceiling but I'll say this I think Zach pyron uh is more likely to realize his potential and look I am just basing this off of what I have seen I haven't been at practice I don't know what these kids look like at practice I'm just going off of last year and what I saw at the spring game now excuse me if you listen to Haynes King in his interview he talks about being very welcomed you know he he's kind of not used to this big City Vibe he's from a small town in Texas but he said something that kind of caught my ear um he's he talked about hating to lose didn't talk about winning he talked about hating to losing it makes me think of a scene in Moneyball where um Billy Beane says I hate losing I hate losing more than I love winning and there's a difference and I believe that um most successful people absolutely deplore losing I can remember Paul Johnson talking about after a loss his wife just knew to leave him alone and he'd go down you know in the in the finished basement and just kind of need to have the night to himself uh and this is something else Brent Keys talked about just absolutely hating losing and we have got to get back to that um you know having this mentality of hating to lose now what can these quarterbacks be if if a realized potential and there might be some people that maybe scoff and laugh I think Haynes King is a phenomenally talented quarterback I think at his height Haynes King could be a Joe Hamilton type and that Zach pyron's height he could be a Georgia with the ability to run um so I guess what I'm saying is whoever wins this quarterback battle I think we're going to be in very good hands with um now there are a few things that concern me um with Haynes King that don't necessarily concern me with Zach pyron um I think Haynes is going to have to find some confidence that Zach pyron already has because I think it's Zach pyron's job to lose um but you know we talked about types of quarterbacks there's also identities of quarterbacks and and maybe we should step back and and address I've talked about the throwing motion if you look at Haynes King's throwing motion from high school to Texas A M it's fairly different so it seems like that's something he was coached to do by Jimbo Fisher and that particular very high holding the ball and that that kind of thing is a more archaic way that quarterbacks have been coached you don't see anymore and I think that came from Jimbo Fisher it looked much better in the spring game now with that being said I don't want to mess with the quarterback's motion too much other than maybe quickening it up a little bit but that looks much better um but there's also I guess quarterbacks like Brett Favre and there's quarterbacks like um trying to think of a good example well let's just look at like Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre um Brett Favre both quarterbacks won Super Bowls both time thrown a ton of touchdowns and talented um but different identities so Brett Favre is a guy that's a gunslinger and he's going to take shots downfield on low percentage throws that just work out sometimes in their ESPN highlight plays how did he make that throw also leads the league all-time an interception was like 400 and something that's not something you're going to coach out of Brett Favre I'll tell you that Aaron Rodgers a guy that's more gonna look at maybe Dan Marino is a better guy a guy that didn't have the huge arm but um made a ton of high percentage throws knew where to go with the ball I guess what I'm saying is my fear is is Haynes King the Gunslinger mentality type that you're just not gonna coach because he's so talented and he tries to make every play every time you got to realize sometimes the defense just won that play they have a better play call um you know we spoke at chess earlier there's a concept in chess called Zug swag As a German word where you just don't have a good move if you could you would just say hey I don't want to you take two moves in a row um now you can kind of surrender a play and football though you can just throw it away or just check it down if that's available you know is Haynes King capable of doing that I think he is but there is a fear of mine that he's you know he's so he's been so talented like in high school that he's just always looking for that throw down field I think that was the same issue with Jeff Sims he's just so talented I mean look at The Intercept think of the start of the Clemson game last year you know it started with interception big downfield throw I don't know if that's something he was coached to do but it seemed to be something that played him through his whole career now I do think Chris winky um can work with him on that I do think that's something that's coachable I don't necessarily think he's just a gunslinger um can't make high percentage throw guy Zach pyron on on the other hand is that high percentage throw guy I already has the confidence is uh and can be a true pocket passer now when you look at when Haynes is the best Hayne seems to be the best when he is on the Run um doesn't seem to be um as successful when he's just sitting in the pocket so whoever wins the job I think play calling and offense is going to need to be slightly different um with Zach pyron I do think you have a little bit bigger play but you can just set them in the in the pocket and let them cook or maybe not bigger Playbook but just a little bit different with Haynes King I think you more want to do rpos read options roll outs um have him on the move all right um so before I say who I think will be the starter let's talk about Chris winky another phenomenally talented quarterback played quarterback at Florida State but even before then he played in the minor leagues for the Blue Jays for like six years so he was older considerably so when he played at Florida State than most people are when they're playing college football um but Adam to our national champion ring list I think that makes seven now um won a national championship in 1999 with Florida State and won a Heisman Trophy in 2000. um if you're a tech fan you think back to that time in the late 90s he was the bane of our existence we never could beat Florida state that was when Joe Hamilton and God see were here um really really good quarterback and has proven to be a really really good head coach Sea Dog and I have both said the coach we're most worried about getting poached off if we have a good bit of success so um I think this is the guy we want coaching quarterbacks now with that being said uh who's gonna win this quarterback job if I if you just forced me to put my own money on it today I would say Zach pyron starts in the first series of this game now um I don't think he's ahead by a ton or anything but just based on what I've seen and you know looking at these guys play I think Zach pyron will be the starting quarterback um but with that being said I think we'll see both of these quarterbacks play if not all three at some point uh during the season because both these quarterbacks have the ability to run I'm sure they're both whoever starts might get banged up in this season we're going to have to see the number two guy coming whoever starts I think we're going to be much better than we have been in the past so you know we always give a letter grade um what would I give it last year you know we haven't had very good quarterback play um and since Paul was here and we haven't had good traditional quarterback play um since I guess since Gailey was here um but if I had to give it a letter grade last year it's tough to say because last year was such the tale of two teams I'd give it a c with the introduction of Zach pyron and I was kind of teetering between C and C minus but I definitely give it a c this year and again it's hard to say because it's so dependent on how all every other position group on the offense performs but I also think we take a good step up here with a full off season the first true quarterback battle we've had in many years at Tech I'm going to give us a full B plus so I'm going to say our wide receivers are a B plus and quarterbacks are a B plus I'm so excited I mean what we're like 14 days out now from September 1st at Louisville but let me know what you guys think who do you think is going to start who would you like to see start how are we going to do this season at the quarterback position definitely let me know in the comment section below if you're a member I'll definitely be sure to respond to your comments first and uh you guys have a good one um and I guess before we even get into it you know quarterback has generally considered the hardest position to play it's either that or cornerback on defense because you're playing uh in a back pedal most of the time it's a difficult position why is quarterback such a difficult position to play so there's a it's really a game of chess so there are obviously you have to be physically tough you have to possess the skill set the arm strength to make certain throws um but look there's a pre-snap read so the defense shows two safeties high with cornerbacks off so that's looking like either cover two cover four um maybe they have single safety high with Corners pressed meaning they're right up on the wide receiver so they're they're giving either you know a cover one or a cover zero look that covers zero they're just in straight man with no help over the top so there's a plethora of different looks you can get right off the bat so then you're thinking well what play do we have called do we need the audible if it's a pass you know knowing what routes you have called and most likely you have an idea of where you want to go with the ball before the ball is snapped now the defense is not just going to always show their hand pre-snap so they might give a look uh like a cover two with safeties you know or with Corners five yards off the wide receiver and then the ball is snapped and now everything changes maybe they roll a safety down so they're given a cover one and maybe they end up coming up and pressing wide receivers on the outside so now what you thought was where you thought you were going to go with the ball uh you don't end up going you have three seconds to kind of at most to to decide uh where you're gonna go with the ball now it could be somewhere totally different there's also feel you know when you when they're in man when do you throw the 50 50 ball um when do you take chances um all of these things so it's an incredibly difficult position to play and it's also dependent on your offensive line play does your running back pick up the block do your wide receivers make the catch do they run the right routes are you communicating right because we just talked about all of those reads that come with being a quarterback pre-snap post-snap same thing with the offensive line so if one of those two or three components isn't working you know you have a negative play or a turnover so
