Weather Impact Alert: Just how hot were schools in Northeast Ohio on Tuesday

Now tonight, Cleveland Metropolitan School district has canceled all outdoor practices, games and events because of this extreme heat. For a full list of cancellations and closures. You can go to wkyc.com. We have it all there for you, but a handful of local schools closed today because of it. Education reporter Danielle Wiggins went to a few to test temperatures inside the building. She joins us live now from Constellation Schools on Pearl Road. This is in Parma Heights. So what did it feel like inside of those classrooms? Danielle Christy, I must tell you it was stuffy, it was hot, it was really uncomfortable and you have to remember these are empty classrooms that were closed because of the heat today. So you can imagine what it would feel like when students and staff are added into the equation. Let's start with Pearl Road Elementary within the Constellation Schools network. We visited a second story classroom and recorded a temperature near 87 degrees by desk. The school is closed both today and tomorrow and about 250 people would normally be here during the school day in Avon Lake, all four elementary schools and the middle school were closed today due to the heat advisory and no air conditioning. Outside of Erie view, elementary temps were more than 100 degrees inside a classroom. We recorded temperatures in the upper eighties. Administrators connected to both schools even addressed those social media comments saying kids should go to schools without air conditioning when it's hot because older generations did. But the attitudes have changed and times have changed. So I think we're, we're looking to, you know, back then it, it wasn't even, it didn't even seem to be an option to close schools when the weather was really hot. We, we went, we, we suffered through it and um it, it was ok. And II, I still think it would be ok. But I think, you know, we have communities that say, you know, it's not safe for our kids to be at school. I think we're, I think we're a lot smarter now too. And Christy, I must tell you, I still have that gun with me. We're outside of constellation uh schools here on Pearl Road and we pack the pavement or we record the pavement and it is 119 degrees. So I'm trying to get back in that car into air conditioning. The pavement is 119 that is such a creative and great way to help us understand what it's like there. Danielle. Thank you so much. Great information there.
