party Johnson says he'll try to build support throughout the weekend the bill would have extended Government funding for six months beyond the September 30th deadline to give lawmakers more time to settle on new spending levels the government will run out of funding if he can't get it done before the end of this month weeks before this year's election and talking about your money a fresh reading of consumer inflation is building the case for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates when they meet next week the rate of inflation continues to slow down but actual prices are still painfully high for many Americans the national desk atra alanar has a closer look at the numbers the rate of consumer inflation continues to slow down now almost to a rate economists consider normal 2 and a half% the lowest reading since February 2021 thanks to price declines for things like used cars grocery Staples and a big one energy the average price for a gallon of gas is 325 according to AAA 58 cents less than this time last year but the cost of housing and going out to eat is still climbing airfare also Rose last month welcome to you both inflation and the economy remains a top concern for voters we have inflation like very few people have ever seen before Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression Republicans on Capitol Hill Wednesday using a hearing about food energy costs to blame the Biden Harris Administration for the high inflation of the past 3 and a half years the upper class the middle class the lower class they're paying more and getting less under the Biden Harris agenda while the White House is emphasizing the progress made to bring down inflation and raise wages wages are beating prices and the buying power of Americans paychecks is going up the political debate tends to be about where the economy has been the debate among bankers and investors on Wall Street is all about where the economy is going and on Tuesday the CEO of the country's biggest bank JP Morgan Chase said I would say the worst outcome is stag flation recession higher inflation and by the way I wouldn't take it off the table but Bank of America's CEO says their data does not suggest that's coming what we see is a consumer activity is consistent with a low growth low inflation economy and has stabilized their analysts expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by a quarter point when they meet next week and when they're done with cuts for this cycle perhaps by 26 interest rates will still be higher than they've been since 2006 or seven say those rates that's actually a good thing because that's more normal environment we can't have a low rate structure you know it means that the economy isn't performing but for now for the next eight weeks how the economy performs could impact how the candidates perform in Washington I'm atrel Nar for the national desk America's news now the US postal service is not ready for the 2024 election president Trump and vice president Harris that's 10 million more than this Cycle's first debate between Trump and President Biden the alltime debate watch record is 84 million that's how many people tuned in to the 2016 clash between Trump and then Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton important to note last night's numbers do not include streaming former president Donald Trump and vice president K laara has faced off in their first presidential debate Tuesday but did they discuss what's most important to voters Emma from the fact Jak team joins us after spending the day analyzing last night's debate a lot to go over Emma the debate LED with a question on the economy uh but it sounds like voters want more concrete answers less drama absolutely so the economy was definitely a top issue for voters but only one economic question was directly asked immigration foreign policy and abortion also some top priorities for voters they asked about four questions about Reproductive Rights two questions were about immigration and then six questions were about foreign policy a lot of ground covered but clearly some topics were left out and people aren't happy about that yeah surprisingly so so the national debt wasn't discussed even though it's over $35 trillion and is expected to Skyrocket to more than 56 trillion in the next 10 years activists are also fired up that education was left out of last night's debate they say it's troubling since so many students are falling behind following the covid-19 pandemic all right Emma thank you much more to discuss in just a few minutes Emma drug is stopped the weight does come back C Michael White a professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut says during the study some kids did experience side effects 80% of kids had some uh upset stomach some had had vomiting a few had diarrhea but since this is the first published study involving kids white says it's not yet known if taking the drug it's such a young age will impact growing bodies but what happens when they're receiving therapy for 10 years for 15 years for 20 years we just don't have that kind of data set lavender also adds that compared to other weight loss drugs one drawback of saxenda is that it isn't a weekly injection you can imagine you know having to give a very young child a daily injection now the trial has been extended to include more treatment also followup results are expected to come out sometime in 2027 I'm also told just like other weight loss drugs saxenda likely would not be covered by Insurance reporting for the abusing animals and eating them however city leaders say that rumor is completely false being in a leadership role right now is like a game of whack-a-mole where we jump to exting was one myth at a time the Oregon Department of Human Services launched new emergency management software that will help emergency managers better pinpoint areas In Harm's Way they say the software will help officials identify and prioritize populations in these areas ultimately saving lives this software speeds that process up immensely and because fires often Cross County boundaries it also allows counties to work together on the same page to do the best job possible to get timely notifications out to people odhs recommends you sign up on o alert for counties you and your loved ones live in a parks department in Maine is putting out an alert about a deformity that can make geese incapable of flying threatening their lives angel wing syndrome happens when the last joint of a wing becomes Twisted Pepper Farm and Goldfish crackers the move isn't final yet and is it will need shareholder approval last year Campbell's snack sales grew 133% while its soups grew 3% processing fees for school lunches are taking a pretty big Financial toll on parents and caregivers Nationwide that out just according to a new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau now most school districts partner with payment processing companies that charge on average here $2 37 each time money is added to a child's account now that's about 4% of the toal transaction cost that fee can really really add up for some for families with lower incomes who can't afford to load large sums of money in one go so those fees can hit weekly or even more frequently increasing the cost to feed their child disproportionately now the report States families that qualify for free or reduced lunch at those schools pay as much as 60 cents per dollar in fees when buying school lunches electronically coming up on the national desk Fran lashing Louisiana the rapid flooding and ferocious winds now leaving thousands in the dark plus armed and dangerous the search for a suspected Interstate shooter stretching hours loss of the gender wage Gap just got a little bigger why experts say the numbers were higher for men than they were for women you're watching the national desk America's news [Music] now e e this is the national desk America's news now [Music] this case is outliving my family and I hope I live long enough to see Justice for my brother had remembering 911 victims why grieving families are still frustrated with the US government 23 years later I can't tell you how many times we've seen violent acts taking place in our restaurants state of Crisis GOP law makers debating how to combat crime on American streets the policy roll backs they say are to blame and key questions getting a curveball the main topics the presidential candidates answered and avoided during last night's debate live from the nation's capital this is a national desk America's news now good evening I'm de Gaton and breaking news as we come back on the air FR scene making landfall in Louisiana just a few hours ago lurching dangerous storm surge and destructive winds into the Gulf Coast State Ryan Smith tracking the lifethreatening Storm at the live desk as power outages soore what's the latest right right now Millions across New Orleans are at risk of life-threatening flooding and of course damaging winds out there officials just issuing a backup number for 911 it's at the bottom of your screen there some people right now are reporting trouble in lots of issues getting a hold of 911 directly now in Jefferson Parish which includes a portion of the New Orleans metro area residents are being urged to as officials work to clear off debris left behind that includes Fallen trees and power lines nearly 300,000 people without power Statewide at this hour tonight the governor has the National Guard on standby prepared to reach impacted communities with any food water and resources that are needed there Francine is expected to weaken into a strong category or excuse me tropical storm when it reaches Southern Mississippi overnight the effects could reach as far north as Missouri and as far east as Tennessee with tornadoes and flooding possible the Ripple effects of the Donald Trump versus kamla Harris debate will be in be more clear rather when polling is sure to be released later this month as the national Matt galel says the immediate aftermath his question swirling about the format and whether there will be another one-on-one before the election I think the moderators were very unfair Donald Trump putting his own spin on the debate while he celebrated his performance he bashed ABC and the moderators his supporters claimed only Trump was fact checked and Harris was impressed they have abortion in the ninth month the governor before he said the baby will be born and we will decide what to do with the baby in other words we'll execute the baby there is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it's born the debates changed this election cycle rules and format were handed over to television networks instead of being handled by the bipartisan Commission on presidential debates if you're going to have a serious debate you've got to have serious people moderating you've got to have you've got to have the respondents be more serious and devoting time to the more important issues dis proportionately than the Min the rules had to be agreed upon by both candidates before the debates took place the first debate between Trump and President Joe Biden that led to the unraveling of Biden's campaign had rules agreed upon by Biden's team Harris supporters are quick to point out Trump agreed to ABC's format as well you know he's complaining about the form he's complaining about the moderators he complaining about the rules he set those rules not kamla Harris and she still cleaned his clock and Dei next up on the schedule the vice presidential debate with CBs news in New York the possibility of another Harris Trump Showdown was floated by Harris's campaign with Trump non-committal so far Yeah you mentioned Trump has been non-committal on another debate he did have a few comments today tell us more about what he has said yeah you know we heard a few different things today he told Fox News that because he believes he won the debate he doesn't know that he'd want to do another one he asked on his truth Social account when he made a post today why would he do a rematch but he also told reporters earlier this afternoon that he and his team were quote looking at possibly doing another debate so there is a chance we do see it again Matt gelo reporting tonight from the capital keep us posted new data shows there was a slight dip in the number of black students in Harvard University's freshman class it follows the Supreme Court's decision last year that barred colleges from considering race in admissions according to data released by Harvard 14% of incoming students identified as black 4% fewer than last year Latino students made up 16% of the Freshman Class up 2% while asian-americans stayed the same at 37% Justin Timberlake has reached a deal to resolve a drunk driving case according to prosecutors the pop star is expected to appear in court on Friday in the Hamptons sources say he's agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge than the original misdemeanor driving while intoxicated police pulled over Timberlake and just in June after he ran a stop sign they say he smelled of booze and failed a series of sobriety tests the search for the man accused of injuring five people when he opened fire on a Kentucky Highway has now stretched into a fifth night the reward defined and arrest 32-year-old Joseph couch here just increasing substantially this week now to $35,000 more than half of that reward offered up by two private donors authorities are scouring the Daniel Boon National Forest in lurel County they describe the area here as jungle like Forest terrain Cliffs sinkholes caves and rivers all complicating the efforts in this ongoing Manhunt police say the area spans more than 700,000 Acres you see the arrow view behind me here in fact area schools have now been closed all week long so far with that community on edge still with him still not caught 23 years ago thousands of Americans died in the worst terror attack on American soil for those they left behind it can be hard for the wounds to heal without suitable accountability and Justice the national desk Kayla Gaskins joins us from Washington with more on the frustration aimed at American leaders the country marking 23 years since the 911 terror attack many who lost loved ones that day remained frustrated with American leaders from and sensitive gffs like President Biden's on Tuesday then tomorrow I'm doing 911 do 911 quite a flippant remark but please remember that the September 11th families live it every day to the lack of accountability for those ultimately responsible it has been 23 years and the families deserve justice and accountability 911 families United sending letters to both kamla Harris and Donald Trump voicing individual frustrations with each Party candidate and asking both for a commitment to prioritize transparency and confront Saudi Arabia about new evidence allegedly tying the Saudis to the attacks soy governments neeat deep in this thing not only lent Aid to them but subsidized them and TR help train them to fly airplanes and we're talking about sorty government officials we spoke with Don Aras whose brother Adam died in the World Trade Center what a great loss for my family for his community for our country that a young man who had so much to offer is gone now the 911 families have hired their own lawyers and are currently suing the Saudi government themselves our uh FBI has not been very forthcoming Aras is also frustrated it's been decades and there still has been no trial for the accused terrorist masterminds sitting in gitmo we fought two Wars over this damn thing and no one's been held to task for 911 yet justice has taken so long aras's mother father and sister have all passed away in recent years so now you know this this case is outliving my family and I hope I live long enough to see Justice for my brother Adam the 9911 families had legislation passed by Congress allowing them private citizens to sue a foreign government like Saudi Arabia they now have a new bill aimed at speeding up the Justice process on Capitol Hill I'm Kayla Gaskins reporting for the national desk America's news now the gender wage Gap just expanded for the first time in two decades according to census income data both women and men they saw an increase in earnings last year but the wage gap between them also widened the national desk Jeff Harris joining us Jeff expert say we haven't seen a wage Gap this significant since 2003 what are the numbers for men last year Dei Aver average earnings went up about 3% but for women earnings were only half that right around 1 and a half% according to the census income data just released the average woman working full-time made 83% of what the average man made that's down 1% from 2022 but still above uh pre-pandemic levels the data also revealed that there has been an influx of Hispanic women joining the labor force and younger women both of which tend to earn less what is the likely biggest explanation for why the Gap do isn't decreasing more than it is is Parenthood so of course not men and women are parents but we do still live in a society where women are expected to take more of the caregiving responsibilities according to axios women make up the majority of low-wage workers in the US partly because many are trying to figure out how to work and also take care of their children and closing this wage Gap has been a slow process data shows that in the year 2000 it was at 74% climbing 9% in the past 23 years according to a new analysis from the World Health organiz a global colera death skyrocketed last year the wh analysis found reported colera death last year Rose by 71% compared to 2022 that's despite reported cases only increasing 133% colera is a diarrheal disease that can cause death by dehydration in as little as one day another twist in Tyreek kill's controversial detainment over the weekend why the NFL star now demand that this officer right here is fired that's next right here at the live desk and we are taking another live look over new orleans's Francine continues to roll through Louisiana footage from the nearby Coco Marina showing the Gusty winds and the flood waters consuming the property as the hurricane makes landfall nearby according to the owners water levels Rose by almost 3 ft in just a few hours you're watching the national America's news [Music] now e e NFL star Tyreek hill now admits he really didn't handle Sunday's police confrontation right here in the best way and now he adds though the officer involved who's on administrative leave should be fired I wish I could go back and you know do things a bit differently now does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me absolutely not gone gone gone he gotta go man officer Danny Torres is the one on administrative leave tonight he says he should be back on duty out in the streets as this internal investigation continues hildo says the officer tried to apologized through his attorney but Hill wasn't interested even though Hill wants to see that officer fired he said this is no time for any protesting against police and hopes that this all can serve as a teachable moment no matter who you thought won Tuesday's presidential debate both former president Donald Trump and vice president KLA Harris dodged questions I'm back with Emma Withrow from the fact team who has spent the afternoon sifting through those transcripts Emma let's start with how many questions were asked and then how many questions did both candidates avoid answering directly yeah so between the two candidates they were each asked between 10 to 12 direct questions so vice president Kay Harris directly and clearly answered about four of those and Trump directly and clearly answered about five of those questions so let's start with Trump which key questions did he avoid answering so the big one that stuck out to me was when they asked him if he would veto a National Abortion ban if it came to his desk we have a clip of him answering here take a listen but if I could just get a yes or no because you're running me J JD Vance has said that you would veto if you did come to your desk well I didn't discuss it with JD in all fairness uh JD and I I don't mind if he has a certain view but I think he was speaking for me but I really didn't look we don't have to discuss it because she'd never be able to get it yeah so after a few attempts to get an answer out of him it was still unclear what he stands on that and then on the other side uh which questions did KLA Harris avoid answering it was actually the first question of the debate that I want to talk about uh it was about the economy and they said do you think Americans are better off now than they were four years ago so take a listen to her answer here I was raised as a middle class kid and I am actually the only person on this stage who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle class and working people of America I believe in the Ambitions the aspirations the dreams of the American people and that is why I imagine and have actually a plan to build what I call an opportunity economy so pretty clear question there but not a very clear answer that we pointed out so that's what we put together today all right we'll wait to see the early point of see if this debate will change how voters feel thanks for all your hard work Emma and for more on this fet team topic including links to their sources scan the QR code on your screen or visit the aes.com the US military saw a surge of volunteers joining the ranks after 911 23 years later as this nation Mourns one group is trying to reverse America's military recruitment crisis e e today the nation honors the 3,000 lives lost during the September 11th attacks now in response back in 2001 America's military saw a massive surge Of Enlistment however 23 years later the country now facing a military Recruitment and retainment crisis Hiring Our Heroes is a Workforce Development program when deciding whether to stay in or leave the military more than 50% of military family site spousal employment as a top Factor we know military families are making serious decisions around whether to remain in service uh to our all volunteer force and certainly the role of a military spouse and the opportunity to go to work has significant impact we're looking at the smallest active duty numbers in our uh all volunteer Force since before World War II now this year 2024 marks the smallest active duty military force since 1940 the era of World War II the Army finishing the last fiscal year with 452,000 active duty soldiers I'm Capitol Hill the issue of crime is often front and center in an election year right now Republicans on the house Judiciary Committee are highlighting crime in two parts of the country they think voters should care about Minnesota and California here's Christine fow with the details following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer the city where it happened erupted in protest and violence Minneapolis was the site of riots and looting with laws some residents say stop being enforced permanently I can't tell you how many times we've seen violent acts taking place in our restaurants I cannot tell you how many times I've heard from our district attorney that we've reduced charges we are letting them off it's a snapshot of a city and a state in crisis and while violent crimes like murder rape robbery and aggravated assault have actually decreased at a steady rate from 2021 to 2022 and then again from 2022 to 2023 GOP lawmakers on the house Judiciary Committee painting a different picture of a state LED since 2018 by Governor Tim Walls under Tim Walls the streets of Minneapolis went from a place to walk your dog to a place to dodge gunfire another witness at the hearing titled the consequences of soft on crime policies detailed her attack in 2008 in San Francisco by a man enrolled in a job training program championed by then District Attorney kamla Harris the guy that did it was a convicted felon illegal immigrant that should have been in jail Democrats accusing Republicans of using their committee to try to attack the Democratic presidential ticket the majority's attempt to use this hearing to prop up the Trump Vans campaign is not even thinly veiled rather than addressing policies that currently affect the American people the majority's Witnesses are here to talk about incidents from as far back as 2008 other Democrats arguing changes in crime policies should include which is critical of course for any potential missions that might travel beyond the moon the walk itself is expected to last about 2 hours it's a beautiful uh opportunity for us to see Earth Mother Earth from this altitude and it's also pretty special because two of my crew members have uh set an altitude record uh for the furthest any female has ever traveled from the planet Earth out of this world excitement SpaceX reports that the biggest challenge here is after that spacewalk ends closing the hatch on board so the crew of the Dragon capsule is safe making sure the pressurization is back suffering a setback on Capitol Hill pulling a spending Bill hours before a plan vote on it the bill faced stiff opposition from his own party Johnson says he'll try to build support throughout the weekend the bill would have extended Government funding for 6 months before the September 30th deadline to give lawmakers more time to settle on new spending levels the government will run out of funding if he can't get it done before the end of this month weeks before this year's election talking about your money a fresh reading of consumer inflation is building the case for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates when they meet next week the rate of inflation continues to slow down but actual prices are still painfully high for many Americans the national desk atra elesar has a closer look at the numbers the rate of consumer inflation continues to slow down now almost to a rate economists consider normal 22% the lowest reading since February 2021 thanks to price declines for things like used cars grocery Staples and a big one energy the average price for a gallon of gas is 325 according to AAA 58 cents less than this time last year but the cost of housing and going out to eat is still climbing airfare also Rose last month welcome to you both inflation and the economy remains a top concern for voters we have inflation like very few people have ever seen before Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression Republicans on Capitol Hill Wednesday using a hearing about food and energy costs to blame the Biden Harris Administration for the high inflation of the past three and a half years the upper class the middle class the lower class they're paying more and getting less under the Biden Harris agenda while the White House is emphasizing the progress made to bring down inflation and raise wages wages are beating prices and the buying power of Americans paychecks is going up the political debate tends to be about where the economy has been the debate among bankers and investors on Wall Street is all about where the economy is going and on Tuesday the CEO of the country's biggest bank JP Morgan Chase said I would say the worst outcome is stagflation recession higher inflation and by the way I wouldn't take it off the table but Bank of America's CEO says their data does not suggest that's coming what we see is a consumer activity is consistent with a low growth low inflation economy and has stabilized their analysts expect the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates by a quarter point when they meet next week and when they're done with cuts for this cycle perhaps by 2026 interest rates will still be higher than they've been since 2006 or seven stand those rates that's actually a good thing because that's more normal environment we can't have a low rate structure you know it means that the economy isn't performing but for now for the next 8 weeks how the economy performs could impact how the candidates perform in Washington I'm atral Nar for the national desk America's news now the US postal service is not ready for the 2024 election that's the new warning today from election officials across the success this is the first ballots of the general election are on their way to voters in Alabama the state started mailing out ballots today North Carolina was supposed to start sending out absent two ballots last Friday but those plans were delayed after RFK Jr sued and one to get his name off the ballot after dropping his campaign testimony began today in the trial of three former Memphis police officers charged in the 2023 beating death of Tyree Nichols in opening statements prosecutor said the ex officers quote stood by his dying body and laughed the defense argued the officer acted in across the country for the victims of the September 11th 2001 Terror attacks in Pennsylvania more than a thousand people gathered at the crash site of Flight 93 people call it the first victory in the Battle of Terror when passengers on board attempted to regain control of the plane from terrorists who hijacked it the superintendent of the memorial Steven Clark says fewer Generations will remember these Heroes but events like this keep their memory alive despite lacking this lived experience these young minds come to special places like the Pentagon Memorial and here at Flight 93 National Memorial to learn how the actions of ordinary people have shaped their world officials at the ceremony read the names of the 40 passengers and crew ringing a bell for each life lost similar ceremonies were held in Northern Virginia and New York City at Ground Zero victims survivors their families and First Responders gathered to honor the lives lost 23 years ago and in the Years Later from 911 related illnesses in Arlington President Biden and vice president kamla Harris rounded out a day of remembrance at the pentagon's memorial former president Trump and his running mate JD Vance also visited all three sites today as well new tonight almost 60 million people watched last night's debate between former president Trump and vice president Harris that's 10 million more than this Cycle's first debate between Trump and President Biden look at the numbers here at the all-time debate watch record 84 million that's how many people tuned in to the 2016 clash between Trump and then democratic nominee Hillary Clinton important to note last night's numbers do not include streaming former president Donald Trump and vice president K laara is faced off in their first presidential debate Tuesday but did they discuss what's most important to voters Emma from the fact Che team joins us after spending the day analyzing last night's debate a to go over Emma the debate LED with a question on the economy uh but it sounds like voters want more concrete answers less drama absolutely so the economy was definitely a top issue for voters but only one economic question was directly asked immigration foreign policy and abortion are also some top priorities for voters they asked about four questions about Reproductive Rights two questions were about immigration and then six questions were about foreign policy a lot of ground covered but clearly some topics were left out and people aren't happy about that yeah surprisingly so so the national debt wasn't discussed even though it's over $35 trillion and is expected to Skyrocket to more than 56 trillion in the next 10 years activists are also fired up that education was left out of last night's debate they say it's troubling since so many students are falling behind following the covid-19 pandemic all right Emma thank you much more to discuss in just a few minutes Emma we'll be back to talk about how much the candidates avoided questions Mass evacuations continue tonight three major wildfires burning tens of thousands of Acres threatening homes we look at all this widespread destruction coming up next right here at the live desk taking a live look over nashille from our station wztv part of our network of 4,000 local journalists look here Rockstar Bon Joy caught on camera helping to prevent a Responders arrived you're watching the national desk America's news now [Music] e e [Music] massive actuations continuing tonight across Southern California three massive wildfires have now burned more than 100,000 acres Governor Gavin Newsome there tonight officially declaring a state of emergency in response now resources in that response now incredibly strapped in Southern California more than 3,000 fire personnel and 22 helicopters were assigned today to the line fire you see it here burning in San Bernardino County deputies also arresting this man 34-year-old Justin hasselberg for starting that line fire he faces three charges of arson officials have not said what exactly he used to start the fire it's now burned more than 34,000 Acres so far now to the bridge fire it is now the largest active wildfire in the state it exploded in size this week scorching nearly 50,000 Acres it is 0% contained as you can see here these heartbreaking images it has now destroyed dozens of homes and vehicles officials say as of tonight the US now has 67 large active fires burning as those wildfires continue to devastate Southern California the byproduct smoke as you can see is drifted to Las Vegas creating unhealthy conditions for residents some of whom have noted Ash falling from the sky the Clark County division of air quality issued an air quality alert and the County School District cancelled all non-essential outdoor activities you are urged to stay indoors keep windows and doors closed new tonight a weight loss drug approved to treat obesity in adults is also safe and effective for kids as young as 6 years old that's according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine the national desk Jeff Harris joins us Jeff we know you spoke with experts they said this is the first published study involving children in weight loss drugs tell us more about this research DD I'm told the drug which is called saxenda has been around for a while the FDA first approving it to treat obesity in adults back in 2014 and researchers now say it's effective for children as young as 6 years old Devin lavender a professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia tells us in this study over 80 kids none older than 10 and all of whom had at least a body mass index of 31 use sex Senda for a year as we've seen with all the other glp1 weight loss medications there was a reduction in BMI from Baseline at the end of the trial period similar to other weight loss drugs on the market lavender says months after the trial ended and the kids stopped taking the drug the weight returned when the drug is stopped the weight does come back C Michael White a professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Connecticut says during the study some kids did experience side effects 80% of kids had some uh upset stomach some had vomiting a few had diarrhea but since this is the first published study involving kids white says it's not yet known if taking the drug at such a young age will impact growing bodies but what happens when they're receiving therapy for 10 years for 15 years for 20 years we just don't have that kind of data set lavender also adds that compared to other weight loss drugs one drawback of saxenda is that it isn't a weekly injection you can imagine imagine you know having to give a very young child a daily injection the trial has been extended to include more treatment and followup results are expected to come out sometime in 2027 I'm also told like other weight loss drugs saxenda likely will not be covered by Insurance reporting for the national desk I'm Jeff Harris the University of Pennsylvania says it will no longer make socio political statements with some caveats the this policy it follows a similar move by Harvard University the new rule makes exceptions for local or world events that have a direct or significant bearing on University functions it follows the president's resignation last year after she received criticism for her comments in a house hearing on anti-Semitism on Capitol Hill the issue of crime is often front and center in an election year and right now Republicans on the house Judiciary Committee are highlighting crime in two parts of the country they think voters should care about Minnesota and California here's Christine fow with the details following the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer the city where it happened erupted in protest and violence Minneapolis was the site of riots and looting with laws some residents say stop being enforced permanently I can't tell you how many times we've seen violent acts taking place in our restaurants I cannot tell you how many times I've heard from our district attorney that we've reduced charges we letting them off it's a snapshot of a city and a state in crisis and while violent crimes like murder rape robbery and aggravated assault have actually decreased at a steady rate from 2021 to 2022 and then again from 2022 to 2023 GOP lawmakers on the house Judiciary Committee painting a different picture of a state LED since 2018 by Governor Tim Walls under Tim Walls the streets of Minneapolis went from a place to walk your dog to a place to dodge gunfire another witness at the hearing titled the consequences of softon crime policies detailed her attack in 2008 in San Francisco by a man enrolled in a job training program championed by then District Attorney kamla Harris the guy that did it was a convicted felon illegal immigrant that should have been in jail Democrats accusing Republicans of using their committee to try to attack the Democratic presidential ticket the majority's attempt to use this hearing to prop up the Trump Vans campaign is not even thinly veiled rather than addressing policies that currently affect the American people the majority's Witnesses are here to talk about incidents from as far back as 2008 other Democrats arguing changes in crime policies should include changes in gun policies as the best way to fight crime on America's streets is debated once again I'm Christine fan for the national desk America's news now the national desk team of reporters is bringing you the headlines from coast to coast we're taking the pulse of America and we begin in Springfield Ohio where City officials are addressing the rumors circulating online about its Haitian immigrant [Music] Community Springfield and Clark County officials finally addressing the increase of Haitian migrants in Springfield we've been pressing the city for comment for days now after months of social media posts slandering the Haitian Community there we tell our kids not to bully one another and I hear adults in our community saying the most hateful things many rumors have been floating around some exaggerating the number of Haitian immigrants in Springfield up to 20,000 Mayor Rob Rue debunked that today we have realistically been saying 12 to 15,000 immigrant is what we' uh what we have counted through the health department and other agencies some rumors even saying Haitian residents in Springfield are abusing animals and eating them however city leaders say that rumor is completely false being in a leadership role right now is like a game of whacka where we jump to extinguish one myth at a time the Oregon Department of Human Services launched new emergency management software that will help emergency managers better pay pinpoint areas In Harm's Way they say the software will help officials identify and prioritize populations in these areas ultimately saving lives the software speeds that process up immensely and because fires often Cross County boundaries it also allows counties to work together on the same page to do the best job possible to get timely notifications out to people odhs recommends you sign up on o alert for counties you and your love ones live in a parks department in Maine is putting out an alert about a deformity that can make geese incapable of flying threatening their lives angel wing syndrome happens when the last joint of a wing becomes Twisted causing the feathers to point away from the body veterinarians say the primary cause is people feeding the waterfoul excess amounts of bread the feathers are growing and faster than the bones that should be supporting that Wing so that's what what causes that that angel wing shape feeding geese small amounts of lettuce and grapes can be better for them but the parks department says the best solution is to not feed them at all well a major setback here for a state looking to curb social media's negative effects on children the new law now on hold we explain next right here at the live [Music] desk e e e at of Salt Lake City Utah tonight where a federal judge has temporarily blocked the state's social media access law which would have restricted some of the use for underage users now it requires tech companies to verify the user's age disable some features like push notifications and include a 3-hour daily limit with an overnight blackout the state's Governor here taking to X saying in part he's disappointed in this judge's decision and predicts a long legal battle ahead of on this he's also accused Tech Giants of prioritizing their profits over the well-being of children the nonprofit net Choice representing Google meta and X temporarily now halting similar laws in five other States including Texas and California they say the goal here is for states to look at constitutional Solutions 23 years ago thousands of Americans died in the worst terror attack on American soil for those they left behind it can be hard for the wounds to without suitable accountability and Justice the national D Kaya Gaskin joins us from Washington with more on the frustration aimed at American leaders the country marking 23 years since the 911 terror attack many who lost loved ones that day remained frustrated with American leaders from insensitive gffs like President Biden's on Tuesday then tomorrow I'm doing 911 June 911 quite a flippant remark but please remember that the September 11th families live it every day to the lack of accountability for those ultimately responsible it has been 23 years and the families deserve justice and accountability 911 families United sending letters to both kamla Harris and Donald Trump voicing individual frustrations with each Party candidate and asking both for a commitment to prioritize transparency and confront Saudi Arabia about new evidence allegedly tying the Saudis to the attacks the Saudi government's neeat deep in this thing not only lent Aid to them but subsidize them and TR help train them to fly airplanes and we're talking about sorty government officials we spoke with Don Aras whose brother Adam died in the World Trade Center what a great loss for my family for his community for our country that a young man who had so much to offer is gone now the 911 families have hired their own lawyers and are currently suing the Saudi government themselves our uh FBI has not been very forthcoming Aras is also frustrated it's been decades and there still has been no trial for the accused terrorist masterminds sitting in gitmo we fought two Wars over this damn thing and no one's been held to task for 911 yet justice has taken so long aras's mother father and sister have all passed away in recent years so now you know this this case is outliving my family and I hope I live long enough to see Justice for my brother Adam the 91 families had legislation passed by Congress allowing them private citizens to sue a foreign government like Saudi Arabia they now have a new bill aimed at speeding up the Justice process on Capitol Hill I'm Kayla Gaskins reporting for the national desk America's news now a news study finds more than half of the global population isn't eating enough of seven new ents crucial for human health it found more than 5 billion people don't consume enough iodine vitamin E or calcium and more than 4 billion aren't getting enough iron riboflavin folate and vitamin C the study was published in the journal the lanet global Health the data doesn't include consumption of supplements in fortified Foods shocking new details inspectors warned the B's head plan in Virginia posed an imminent threat two years before the recent deadly leria outbreak that's according to the USDA the New York Times reporting the documents show the plan had rusted equipment product buildup condensation dripping on the floor and mold on the walls at least nine people died and more than 60 were sickened by the outbreak coming up a 155-year old brand now wants to change their iconic name the Chang is coming to your local grocery aisle plus the concerning cost tied to school launches the brand new report just outbreaking down why processing fees are hitting some lower income families the hardest but first breaking news here at the live desk as we take you out live over New Orleans tonight for an scene just weekened from a hurricane to a tropical storm minutes ago the storm causing a carnival cruise ship to delay docking in that City they tentatively expect the cruise ship to arrive Thursday afternoon but it may be even further delayed we're back in 90 seconds e e and the Campbell Soup company wants to drop soup from their name to be known as Campbell's company as more people reach for snacks and ditch ready to serve soups the 155-year old brand has extended Beyond soups for quite a while the company owns Brands like Pepper Farm and Goldfish crackers the move isn't final yet as it will need shareholder approval last year Campbell snack sales grew 133% while its soups grew 3% processing fees for school lunches not taking a financial toll on parents and caregivers Nationwide that according to a new report just out from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau most school districts here partner with payment processing companies that charge on average $237 each time money is added to a child's account that's about 4% of the total transaction now that fee can really add up for some for families with lower incomes who can't afford to load large sums of money at one go so those fees can hit weekly or even more frequently increasing the cost to feed their child disproportionately the report also stating here that families that qualify for free or reduced lunches pay as much as 60 cents per dollar in fees when paying for school lunches electronically for those of you leaving us tonight thank you for watching have a great night coming up on the national desk Francine lashing Louisiana the rapid flooding and ferocious winds now leaving thousands in the dark plus armed and dangerous the search for for a suspected Interstate shooter stretching into its fifth day the eye popping rewards so one on edge Community can get back to normal and later the record smashed in Space the population boomed just in time for a unique Space Walk in just a few hours plus the gender wage Gap just got a little bigger why experts say the numbers were higher for men than they were for women you're watching the national desk America's news now [Music] e e this is the national desk America's news [Music] now live from the nation's capital this is the national desk America's news now good evening I'm Dee Gaton breaking news as we come back on the air FR scene making landfall in Louisiana just a few hours ago lurching dangerous storm surge and destructive winds into the Gulf Coast State Ryan with tracking the life-threatening storm at the live desk as power outages soar right now Millions across New Orleans are at risk of that life-threatening flooding and damaging winds officials just issuing this backup number for 911 it's at the bottom of your screen some people reporting issues when trying to report an emergency and getting a hold of 911 directly now in Jefferson Parish which includes a portion of the New Orleans metro area residents now being urged to limit their water usage there as an aging sewer system is just simply overwhelmed by the storm runoff they warn if systems become too full that water could actually back up into your home tropical storm Francine making landfall today as a category 2 hurricane here brand new video showing the dangerous conditions a lot of this is the storm surge rushing over the roadways and this of course is why officials are urging everyone to stay off the roads the sheriff there issuing a mandatory curfew so Crews can clear out all the debris later a lot of reports have fallen trees in power lines so far more than 300,000 people reporting without power in Louisiana the governor has the National Guard on standby prepared to deliver any food and water and conduct any search and rescues if needed frine right now churning into Southern Mississippi during the overnight hours the tropical storm warnings will continue along a southern swath of the Gulf Coast stretching from inter coastal city Louisiana all the way to the Alabama Florida State Line the Ripp the Ripple effects of the Donald Trump versus kamla Harris debate will be more clear when polling is sure to be released later this month as the national desk Matt Galo tells us the immediate aftermath has questioned swirling about the format and whether there will be another oneon-one before the election I think the moderators were very unfair Donald Trump putting his own spin on the debate while he celebrated his performance he bashed ABC and the moderators his supporters claimed only Trump was fact checked and Harris was impressed they have abortion in the ninth month the governor before he said the baby will be born and we will decide what to do with the baby in other words we'll execute the baby there is no state in this country where it is legal to kill a baby after it's born the debates changed this election cycle rules and format were handed over to television networks instead of being handled by the bipartisan Commission on presidential debates if you're going to have a serious debate you got to have serious people moderating you've got to have you've got to have the respondents be more serious and devoting time to the more important issues disproportionately than the minu the rules had to be agreed upon by both candidates before the debates took place the first debate between Trump and President Joe Biden that led to the unraveling of Biden's campaign had rules agreed upon by Biden's team Harris supporters are quick to point out Trump agreed to ABC's format as well you know he's complaining about the form he's complaining about the moderators and complaining about the rules he said those rules not kamla Harris and she still cleaned his clock and Dei next up on the schedule the vice presidential debate with CBS news in New York the possibility of another Harris Trump Showdown was floated by Harris's campaign with Trump non-committal so far Yeah you mentioned Trump has been non-committal on another debate he did have a few comments today tell us more about what he has said yeah you know we heard a few different things today he told Fox News that because he believes he won the debate he doesn't know that he'd want to do another one he asked on his truth Social account when he made a post today why would he do a rematch but he also told reporters earlier this afternoon that he and his team were quote looking at possibly doing another debate so there is a chance we do see it again Matt gelo reporting tonight from the capital keep us posted new data shows there was a slight dip in the number of black students in Harvard University's freshman class it follows the Supreme Court's decision last year that barb colleges from considering race in admissions according to data released by Harvard 14% of incoming students identified as black 4% fewer than last year Latino students made up 16% of the Freshman Class up 2% while asian-americans stay the same at 37% Justin Timberlake has reached a deal to resolve a drunk driving case according to prosecutors the pop star is expected to appear in court on Friday in the Hamptons sources say he's agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge than the original misdemeanor driving while intoxicated police pulled over Timberlake in June after he ran a stop sign they say he smelled of booze and failed a series of sobriety tests the search for the man accused of injuring five people when he opened fire on a Kentucky interstate has stretched into a fifth night now the reward to find an arrest this man right here 32-year-old Joseph couch just increased substantially now at 35,000 more than half of that was offered up by two private donors authorities are scouring this area here the Daniel Boon National Forest in Laurel County Kentucky they describe the area as a jungle likee Forest terrain so Cliffs sink holes caves and rivers all complicating this ongoing and Urgent Manhunt police say now the area spans more than 700,000 air acres and area schools have all been closed all week long with that Community still on edge with him not caught the gender wage Gap just expanded for the first time in two decades according to census income data both men and women saw an increase in earnings last year but the wage gap between them also widened the national desk Jeff Harris joins say experts say Jeff we haven't seen a wage Gap this significant since 2003 what are the numbers so for men last year Dei average earnings went up 3% but for women earnings weren't as high about half of that coming in at 1 and a 12% Accord according to the census income data just released the average woman working full-time made 83% of what the average man made that's down 1% from 2022 but still above pre-pandemic levels the data also revealed more Hispanic women and younger women join the labor force both of which tend to earn less what is the likely biggest explanation for why the Gap isn't decreasing more than it is is Parenthood so of course not all men and women are parents but we do still live in a society where women are expected to take more of the caregiving responsibilities according to axios women make up the majority of low-wage workers in the US partly because many are trying to figure out how to work also take care of their children and closing this wage Gap has been bit of a slow process data shows that in 2000 it was at 74% climbing just 9% in the past 23 years another twist in Tyreek Hills controversial detainment over the weekend while the NFL star once one of those responding officers fired that's next but first a live look over New Orleans as Francine continues to roll through Louisiana you can see that live camera shaking there in the wind footage from the nearby Coco Marina shows the Gusty winds in flood waters to the left of your screen consuming the property as the now tropical storm made landfall nearby according to the owners water levels Rose by almost 3T meet in just a few hours you're watching the national desk America's news now e e in Star Tyreek hilled now admitting he really didn't handle Sunday's police confrontation here in the best way possible but he does say the officer who is now on administrative leave should be fired take a listen I wish I could go back and you know do things a bit different L now does that give them the right to literally beat the dog out of me absolutely not gone gone gone he got to go man officer Danny Tor is a 27-year veteran with that department says he should be back on duty as the internal investigation plays out hildo says the officer tried to apologize to him through an attorney even though heill wants to see that officer fired now he said this is no time for any protest protesting against the police department and he hopes this can all serve as a teachable moment new details Ohio's Governor Mike dwine announcing more than $2 million in state funding to Clark County to help with the influx of immigrants in Springfield within the last three years around 15,000 Haitian immigrants have moved to the area in search of job opportunities one of the most talked about moments of course in Wednesday's presidential debate was Donald Trump claiming Haitian immigrants in Springfield Ohio are eating people's pets city leaders in Springfield say they have no credible evidence that this is happening in their town no matter who you thought won Tuesday's presidential debate both former president Donald Trump and vice president KLA Harris dodged questions I'm back with Emma wiro from the fck team who has spent the afternoon sifting through those transcripts Emma let's start with how many questions were asked and then how many questions did both candidates avoid answering directly yeah so between the two candidates they were each between 10 to 12 direct questions so vice president K Harris directly and clearly answered about four of those and Trump directly and clearly answered about five of those questions so let's start with Trump which key questions did he avoid answering so the big one that stuck out to me was when they asked him if he would veto a National Abortion ban if it came to his desk we have a clip of him answering here take a listen but if I could just get a yes or no because you're running me Jen JD Vance has said that you would veto if you did come to your desk well I didn't discuss it with JD in all fairness JD and I I don't mind if he has a certain view but I think he was speaking for me but I really didn't look we don't have to discuss it because she'd never be able to get it yeah so after a few attempts to get an answer out of him it was still unclear what he stands on that and then on the other side uh which questions did KLA Harris avoid answering it was actually the first question of the debate that I want to talk about uh it was about the economy and they said do you think Americans are better off now than they were four years ago so take a listen to her answer here I was raised as a middle- class kid and I am actually the only person on this stage who has a plan that is about lifting up the middle- class and working people of America I believe in the Ambitions the aspirations the dreams of the American people and that is why I imagine and have actually a plan to build what I call an opportunity economy so pretty clear question there but not a very clear answer that we pointed out so that's what we put together today all right we'll wait to see the early point of see if this debate will change voters feel thanks for all your hard work Emma and for more on this fet team topic including links to their sources scan the QR code on your screen or visit the more than 50% of military families now say that they cite spousal employment as a top Factor we know military families are making serious decisions around whether to remain in service uh to our all volunteer force and certainly the role of a military spouse and the opportunity to go to work has significant impact we're looking at the smallest active duty numbers in our uh all volunteer Force there now as of tonight the hurricane warnings have passed but tropical storm and storm surge warnings remain in effect for that [Music] region e e SpaceX now just a couple hours away tonight from attempting the world's first civilian Space Walk during the Polaris Dawn Mission billionaire and commander of the mission Jared isaacman and Mission specialist Sarah Gillis were chosen to attempt this daring walk their main goal is to evaluate how spacex's new suits perform outside of the Dragon capsule which would be critical for any potential missions that travel beyond the moon the walk itself expected to last about 2 hours it's a beautiful uh opportunity for us to see Earth Mother Earth from this altitude and it's also pretty special because two of my crew members have uh set an altitude record uh for the furthest any females ever traveled from the planet Earth SpaceX reports that the biggest challenge here is after The Space Walk ends the space uh closing the hatch on board the crew Dragon capsule making sure the pressurization is back to normal then of course safely returning home a reminder tonight to check yourself and your pets for seed ticks if you're spending time Outdoors seed ticks are in the larval stage of their life cycle just after hatching they can be as small as the head of a pin often making them very hard to see despite their size they can still attach to humans and animals potentially spreading illnesses like Lyme disease or Alpha gal a reminder just check your pets and yourself that's going to do it for us tonight the conversation picks up online and
