event that is going on right now out of Boston College. as we are hearing from the men's hockey coach there and retired. coach Jerry York. they are speaking about the tragic. loss of Johnny and Matthew goodro Uh Johnny was in an NHL hockey player. That is going on right now. So we are going to Pivot over there and listen in good afternoon. Thank you for being here with us today. on behalf of the entire Boston on Community, and I could send that the job for that this afternoon's press availability will be. For. shower coach. shower family, a family, men's hockey, coach great power. And legendary behind PC. architecture. from Boston College. and again, thank you for convenience. To you. ask questions. hey, the coach when you first heard the news this morning, And speakable. Confirmed yet. So, We were hoping that. 6:30. It's hard to put into words. A girl family is still closed. They're so tight. So many people here. that were affected by the time. weeks. everybody. the fact that they were together, is, Horrific. because they were that kind of thing. What was it like working with Johnny and Matthew? Wish, I'd like to ship what Greg said was shocking news to us, you know, it was just such a hard reality when you wake up in the morning and and hear that uh and, and the biggest thing. and Cricket. I've talked about this that you know, Johnny is the national news and you know, my phone's been ringing from all over the Canada United States this morning. But but they're both boys, you know. And they're both. are so close to our program. So can you imagine uh, key and Jane and the parents The young 1 of the youngest, the youngest daughter Katie is getting married today. And they were all back to celebrate. And, and now you lose 2 Sons. So it's it's some sound imaginable. And uh, you know, we know life is difficult. and at least this is certainly 1 of those times. But uh, he was a special. Quadro connections like Greg said to us. uh, you know, both amazing players and people all talk about Johnny as you know, Olympic player and world class but just as some of the raised, the level of your practice, to to, uh, be Johnny hockey, but not Wear that label. uh, well, respected by all the students here. the teachers, uh, and by Greg and I, you know, if you ask us the name of our favorite player is, you know, they've got to be both. Boys are going to be among them. Okay. Do you have obviously a good hockey players to be here? Great hockey players. But when you speak of them and being with them on a, on a daily basis, what were they like? Is people what were your favorite? things about them? is, is, is people a time of joy to the right. They were happy to be there like true happy to be there. big smiles. all the time. The things they can do on the ice. That's people who don't know them. remember because they were both magical. and our own ways but uh Everyone is well, having them on the team They are a tremendous teammates. lit up the room, when they came in. So, Not only, you know, we've had lots of Brothers. at BC but when you add those to in the room, just, everything was amped up. and it carried that. And joined that they had for. for life. and for being teammates on the you can see by the way we play we talked about them being very close. Can you talk about the dynamic between the 2 of them when they were teammates For That season? How they would interact? being on the same team? Yeah. Uh, We had a great team. Battle each other in practice. Um, looked out for each other. like for others, too. the only thing you can say is, their, their personality and their their enthusiasm was truly infectious to the whole infectious to the whole team. They could. science, magical on the ice that year. Um, That he'll really. Be a big time player for us. After that year but and together was just, uh, Just brought a juice. for the father Tony talks about Branch juice and a lot Together, 3 years here. So You know. like, Greg said, Johnny was a magical but Maddie just is compete level, and he pushed his brother, so much. uh, that they had a great bond between them, but I think part of the reason Johnny was so good. not Greg and myself here, but the younger brother. pushed him hard like that. So it was, it was fun Dynamic to watch and uh, when we first recruit when we first came in, I remember Kevin Hayes and we had a lot of really good players above Kreider and Uh, Tommy cross and they look at this little kid. walking. It looks like it's 14 years old and they had heard so much about him and very few had seen him play. Uh, and he wasn't didn't want to be the first 1 in the room. He he was, he was never going to be that type of guy. He just kind of came in and sat down and And I'm sure Kevin was looking over. This is the guy that's going to help us win a National Title. Yeah, Kevin, he is so uh, but he, he he really became close especially with us say, Kevin Hayes. So that was his go to, and actually became a DOT rat. Spent a lot of weekends with uh Kevin Senior the family and endorsed justice. So he he even though he's a kind of a Philly kid. Jersey kid, he became quite a Boston. uh, young guy. Jerry, you tell me you almost didn't become an eagle, he was going to be a husky first. And then and turned out playing for you as a hobby Baker winner, you know, you just go get a chance to coach. Too many of those guys. Yeah. breast recruiter was Greg Cronin. I think, uh, and we've seen Greg and I both stay in touch with Craig, All these years. But he had left Northeast. and prior to uh, Johnny and Maddie both coming. That that uh fall. and so during the summer, uh, he reached out to You know. Greg and Greg helped him. I think pick some different schools to visit and uh, then he went and visited us and I think Maddie was a, I think Greg at driving force, I think. that we knew You know the both brothers were tight, but I think he was 1, John. Let's go to BC. You know, they could have got a Wisconsin bu or anywhere they wanted to And so I think, Manny helped direct them. I think that's what I don't. You were gonna go together. Yeah. Unfortunately. To have room. So, excited to get him. Put us over the edge to win that first. that national title. What do you think is weight was when he came in? Did you get that? Out. He was 20 pounds later than him. Like the things that they could do. For their size. I mean, they both have a genius tool That You Don't See. Be effective, not only at the college level with Johnny in the NHL. At that size. Takes. Such a high IQ level. that you can't get. Right. now, at least Play. But be a star. I'm a few practices who are and Mike Cavanaugh, then was was was on a staff. And and, Michael. Greg and and I'd be looking at both of them. as Johnny did something. Wow, what's he just through there? You know, as Elusive and As. just incredible. Things he could do with the ice with the park and I just took over Greg or something, because we're gonna be pretty good this year. Big, a big cry to with him. It was pretty interesting. have either of you had the chance to speak with the family And what did you say or if not? What would you like to say to them? I had a chance. Go ahead. That's every They texted a Jane, a guy this morning. And just reminded him the help especially with the PC and um, it even Katie, uh, great question, Remembers her too. She was like a 10 year old. Youngest sister never missed a game and, you know, was what were the BC gear and everything and for her you know to be getting married. the the whole thing is, so hard. But it will have a great contingent coming through here, down to the uh, wake and the funeral And I'm sure if Tony is available. He'll be a father, Tony, a bit of a set of masks too. Okay. go tell story about the zkittlez, how he learned to skate. I think that would entertaining. We heard it from. guy. I think that's You to think he would Chase Skittles, he wasn't in love with hockey and he was little, but he would chase the skills because he like those diet was never. that of a world class athlete, but his teammates are a lot more of those stories. It seems like they were the finest. You guys have ever coached What did you learn? As athletes as student athletes here. at Boston College, you guys are so busy coaching and teaching did they teach you guys anything? Oh absolutely. every day. Uh, You know. got this hockey skills but how they handle themselves? and and Finn was always talking about you know, you want to be great on the ice, but you don't want to act great off the ice and just be a regular, you know, and they'd walk around the campus and everybody. would be in awe of course the brother Johnny uh but he was just, you know. Hello. and very polite and so, he handled Fame. extremely well. And he didn't NHL level too. He was always a great teammate. and but that's kind of what I remember about him. Very grounded. grounded grounded. Special abilities. But You know, that was just their thing. teammates. Grounded. Trying. The artery of season, He came back, he slept on his brother's floor to to get some more classes in so, he did get his degree. Back. And that was recent. Or. well, okay, remember pretty soon after he okay. great hour of saying goodbye to Johnny, because he's, we were in Philadelphia the final 4. and, uh, Calgary has set a plane to pick them up, Bring them right to the end of the season. where play some games for the Flames. Yeah. And uh, the mother was with us and she was and she was James. she was adamant John. You're gonna get that degree. and she stayed right on him. So Yeah. both boys have the degrees from BC and that's that's important to us here. it seems like they left an indelible Mark here. How the current players? I was say they're looking at as as Legends and he's a legend here on campus How how are the current players? handling? this? Do they get a chance to really know him? Did he come back and visit sometime Gregor know that I'm not Yeah, I spoke with Ryan Leonard. play them at the world championships. This last spring so, well, but he said. They don't know all the pros. which was not talking to us, because they would bring their right in. so, here we have that our team have you today. To talk about it. There's several of our kids. we're growing up watching. uh, Johnny play here. Thought it was pretty cool to put on a b Jersey. Time for our last question. That went on to become. was just starting to get into coaching. that surprised you that 1 of you that you would people want to stay in the game. Or had a love for the game and a passion for it. And Around Hockey coaching and everything. Uh, so is a shocking at all, uh, hockey hockey is in there as well. It's been great about you. very cerebral. understanding. Really the big game within the game. So, thank you. Thank you. being appreciated and sorry, for your loss.
