September you got to put your head down and grind for the next eight weeks from one twins way in Minneapolis welcome inside Target Field inter league baseball on MLB The Show the Atlanta Braves taking on the Minnesota Twins and we'll be back with the first pitch right after this so almost ready to get underway and towing the slab Pablo Lopez what should we keep an eye on here well it hasn't been a great year so far in terms of erra but he's had some decent games and there have been some flashes of greatness if you will we'll see today if he's able to get ahead of hitters and perhaps get some swings and misses put himself in a position to bring that er down because you know in the back of his mind Beyond The W he wants to have a better earned run average Michael Harris the leadoff batter as he looks at ball one that misses two [Music] and0 inside corner and that's called to strike the pitch foul ball there and Pablo Lopez will deliver that's still two and two after the foul [Applause] [Music] ball leftand hitter Waits swings and misses he swung over top of the curveball very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you struggle to put the ball in play you don't even have to get a hit at that point you can help your team just by reaching on an error but someway got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next [Music] time this one popped up foul ground first face side and Vasquez able to pull it down here's the Atlanta Braves lineup this is a veteran Le lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience singy yeah no doubt about that boo these players have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they've got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this they come to the ballpark they know how to get down to business and they understand what the job is at [Music] hand two down nobody on that one finds the Zone oh and two [Applause] now swing and a highfly ball deep left field walner ranging back feeling for the wall as he makes the catch no score as we head to the bottom of the first [Applause] back here with my pal singi and on the bound now Charlie Morton well that whip is just below the league average and that's a good thing in this case not allowing too many base runners so for most days he's going to go out there and compete and put his team in a position to win and I expect to see that from him in this one today this is Willie Castro not short St Willie Castro the pitch there's a strike hold On's the [Music] count sang and a miss and the count is 0 and two two [Music] [Applause] St outside and chases that one and one away here's Trevor lck wouldn't chase that time Morton he gets a lot of swing and miss and he keeps the ball in the yard not to mention the fact not too many hits [Applause] either he swings and fouls one off even some of the best guys in the sport are going to give up home runs from time to time and he's an exception yeah and even with those home runs if you're throwing strikes in keeping base runners off the paths then those home runs are Solo shots but to this point he hasn't had wor about it Ella to First in time and two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight and now we take a peek at the Twins lineup singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to swing it they're not going to force a ton of action on the bases and so obviously that is one of the focal points that we'll look at and you look at the quality of the abats because of the fact that the legs aren't a part of this game they have to be very selective look for long pitch counts grinding out at bats and really barrels to the baseball because it's a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to Sprint and the righty deals fast ball for a strike you look at what the elite pitchers do they strike hitters out they limit walks and they limit the ball going out of the park so a foul ball makes it one and two yeah all you want is a guy like that take the ball every fifth day go out there hand it over to the bullpen perhaps in the seventh inning or later next offering misses down and [Applause] away and another ball two out space is empty the right-hander gives up the two out walk you know I think he's okay with that outcome it wasn't an intentional walk but he wasn't exactly trying to attack the Zone either two outs runner at first now the clean up hitter for Minnesota Matt Walmer Morton checks over to First and he's back that's in for a strike B one there off the plate two and one [Applause] leftand batter WS runner on the goal so nothing in the Minnesota first onto the second from Target Field no score here on the [Music] show all set for the start of the inning here's m olon the first one of the things that helped Olsen in 2023 a stance adjustment and that is well kept him more balanced for Less swing and miss and a pitch Lopez in his sixth season he features a four seam fast ball a change up a slurve a curve and he works in a sinker next pitch is outside Eric summersgill are played on umire one thing to watch out for boo is what side of the plate Summers Gill might be favorite he usually sets up at an angle pitchers sometimes will try to figure that out early so they can attack that spot and get as many strike calls as possible steps on first for the outting the catcher Travis darno and now it's Travis darno with the plate right through there for a strike oh and one next offering is in for a strike and the pitch struck him out without a swing CLI the bottom of the Zone with a curve for strike three oh you know that's got to be very frustrating for this guy he knows the strike zone extremely well and you know what good hitters are not going to compromise he'll take that punch out but ultimately stick with his plan and have more success than anything [Applause] else Ramon laano in the Box here lets that one go for a ball [Applause] fast B for a strike that's excellent location on the fast ball right there early in this game if he can do that all game should be a good outing for him this one in the air center field Martin makes the grab and that is that three up three down for him there now to the bottom of the second we're tied nothing nothing back at Target Field bottom half of inning number two here's the veteran outfielder Max Kepler Kepler the rander back to work that one fouled off the1 swing and a miss and that's strike two I think he was sitting off speed there and ball one two St and a pitch and that's off the Inside Edge and the count is two and two out to short arcia low throw and it can't dig it out [Applause] and now the first baseman Jose Miranda first Jose Miranda and that's downed [Music] away on the ground right side four six three and they turn the double play I think four 63 double plays like that are way tougher than these guys make it look sometimes because no matter how you do it the feed from the second basem is a tough one that's where footwork really comes into play but right there very well done Ed Julien stands in now and watches strike one hean ball that's out would chase that time nothing nothing here in the bottom of the second and a foul ball pitch misses and it's three and two and he walked him one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so a ball down the line or into the Gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it tag save stolen base darn no too late with a throw two outs is a great time to try to steal second especially when you have a guy with some Wheels On First Defense probably knew it was coming but figured we better focus on trying to get this hitter out [Applause] on the ground to the left and that's just foul Feld two and a foul ball he stays alive [Music] good eye in that spot it's a good [Music] [Applause] take fights that one away still one and two the twins looking to strike first bottom half of inning number two and a swing and a miss and that's that one error in the inning but it doesn't hurt him we play two full no score [Applause] back in Minnesota on to the third inning now in for the Braves Jared [Music] Kelner and the rightand her back to work just missed just missed and another ball all I would expect in this three count you're taking all the way see if he'll walk you there's the automatic come on it's a leadoff walk and that's the go-ahead Run maybe a little loss of focus on the mound right there pretty much gifted him first base with a quick free pass here's giell he swings and misses at the first pitch and one [Applause] fast ball for a strike right side and it finds its way through for a hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that's a at bat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game here's Orlando Aria that one misses and it's w to [Applause] know first and second here no outs [Music] [Applause] next pitch is downstairs tough spot right here couple Runners on two ball count you can't nibble but you have to execute and finish your pitch if you leave something out over the he hit him and that got him pretty flush he had two strikes on him and he hit him so the batting order turns over here's the center fielder Michael Harris golden opportunity right here that's outside one and0 the opportunity for a huge inning exists right here Bases Loaded nobody out but as a hitter can't be over anxious that pitch up up against the wall make him come to [Applause] you pitches in for a strike going to count one and [Applause] two line try base head one runs in and they don't push it Runner holds it third base is loaded now with still nobody out well there you go the RBI machine another clutch run scoring it back yeah he's been so good in these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself Bas is loaded nobody out wh marfield up to the plate pitch misses there and that's ball one and here it comes off the mark there and that's ball two pressure's on right here two count base is loaded you don't want to fall to a three ball count and then walk in or on he's got to challenge The Hitter right here kicks and fires that misses the Zone ball three to lay off that pitch down ball four and a run comes in to score really gotten himself into a mess out there and now forces home a run with the wall his inning's definitely getting away from him here's Marcelo Zuna flyed to left his first time and a good eye there two walks in the inning already and he just doesn't seem comfortable out there like he can find the right mechanics and then repeat them all loaded up dangerous hitter at the plate now Fly ball to Right Center Martin has it sized up he's got it both Runners tagging from second and third he'll score on the sack fly and they lead by three well that's the third run of the inning and this team is doing a nice job of executing at the plate right now and now it's Matt Olsen's turn to hit 0 for one so far you almost have to feel bad for Matt Olsen after what happened in 2023 he played every game hit 5 four home runs drove in 139 led the league in slugging and he still wasn't even named a finalist for the National League MVP award swing in a Miss nice change up in all seriousness I don't think anyone is feeling bad for Matt olon 2023 was a phenomenal season for him whether he was an MVP finalist or not traffic on the bases with three already across we're here in the top half of inning number three foul ball still one and two count now the pitch and another ball that misses the zone three and two now eighth pitch of the at coming up too low ball four and he's walked another it wasn't easy but he earned that walk after a long at bat well he's normally going to fill up the strike zone and really limit base runners but his command in this one just seems off out there a lot more walks than he's used to given up swing by darno that one lifted to left high and deep and it hits the base of the wall one run across around third the relay to the plate he'll score two runs are in it's five nothing picks himself up a couple of ribbies challenged him with the fast ball right in the heart of the zone and he was clearly ready to jump all over it Rocco Bal Deli out of the Dugout now and he's going to make a change Pablo Lopez is done and this is one he'd like to forget back with a new arm after this on the mound now Bailey over I think he's got to be a little tough coming in out of the pin when your guys are trailing so big on the scoreboard just doesn't have the same intensity to it but he's got to find a way because these batters count the same for his stats obviously regardless of the score second and third one gone here's Ramon laurano 0 for one with a fly out to Center that's first pitch [Applause] misses next offering is fouled back one down Runners at second and third instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in Hammer base hit in comes the run from third it's six nothing everything came together for him showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn't get jumpy didn't try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit here's Jared Kellick the walk and a run score at his first time in for a strike one one [Applause] Runners are at the corners one away so he can move the ball around add and subtract get some weak shoots a line dri single into Right Center in comes the run from third to add on it's seven to nothing well he wasn't afraid to hit with two strikes I think he choked up a little bit maybe spread out but he got the job done right there so first and second with one gone here's the third baseman Gio Ella ler snagged it first throw behind the runner they've got him doubled off but they take the lead on a huge seven run Outburst we head now to the home half of inning number three it's the Braves seven and the twins nothing set for the bottom of the third and here's the rookie center field Austin Martin Austin Morton back to work all every pitcher wants run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs that's a next pitch misses one ball one strike right-hander kicks steals BS it off still one and two righty delivers two balls two strikes that one missed for really good take especially with two [Applause] [Music] strikes stays alive and a payoff pitch good plate appearance there there able to take the walk that's a great atat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a walk do you think you could draw Walk In The Bigs if we gave you enough atat oh that's a good question um I think that if they gave the pitcher a false scouting report on me yes I think I could draw one Castro the next to hit takes ball one run at first with no outs here next pitch in for a strike and the count one and [Music] one at the belt and fires strike two one ball two stri swings through it and that's a strike out I think he might have gotten away with one right there that was a very hit pitch right over the of the pl and I know that batter is kicking himself right now would like to get that pitch again just pulled the string on it and the deception gets him the K that's a bullet but it goes foul Morton to throw over and he Dives back in safely [Music] Edie deals ground ball could be two to Second that's one on the first double play and that's the inning nothing across here this half three Innings complete it's the Braves seven and the twins nothing start of the fourth and the batter will be the short stop Orlando Aria orando AR the wi in the pitch and first offering is fouled off you know these Braves putting together some really good at bats in this game there's been a lot to like with how they're approaching their chances at the plate they were obviously able to run the starter out of the game in the third so they've set the table for a win and now I'm sure they're thinking it's time to feast and that one is lifted in the air on the move to the Gap and there's one away so if they're looking to Feast are you saying they've already got a plate but are looking to go back for seconds yeah I'd say something like that back to the leadoff spot in the Braves lineup Michael Harris next up for the Braves one for two and the first pitch misses for ball [Music] one and that's a little high one out base is empty foul ball in the air out towards Right Center puls it in for the [Applause] out the batter number two outs SP is empty Whit marfield the next to hit he's over one stri fast ball for a strike and it's O and one swing in a Miss as he was out front that time two outs knocks that one away and will'll do it again the 02 right through there got him and it's a three up three down inning nothing doing here this half we're Midway in the fourth it's the Braves seven and the twins nothing and welcome back to the ballpark John chabby and Chris Singleton with and leading off the bottom of the fourth Roy Lewis [Music] the wi to the pitch outside ball one he's been pitching well but going through this middle of the order second time through we'll see what kind of adjustments are being made close one doesn't get the call and now two and0 he's clearly trying to work him away here both pitches off the plate if you really want to put the ball in play you're going to have to stay back and drive it to the opposite field swing in a Miss as he was out front he can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it that's just too much velocity hitters got to look down in the zone spoils that one and it remains two and two the wi of the pitch and that's outside and the counts full [Music] now he's desperately looking for that swing and Miss he's going to have to just change speeds a little bit try to move it around create just a little bit of Illusion at the end hacks and misses it's a strike out good pitch right there I mean he's attacking a location that this guy the pl tends to have trouble with and there's just so much information in this day and age sometimes too much information but the guys that can take that information process it and then go out there Bo and execute the pitch go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating that's really good pitching right there and it's a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together now batting Max [Music] Kepler and it's foul away comes a pitch deep drive down the line foul [Applause] ball old two now ball one there St Cs and misses it's a strike out down go to twins in order not going their way it's 7 nothing and we're back we go to the top of the fifth and the batter now Marcelo Zuna the pitch that one finds the zone and that is strike one movement in the bullpen Cole Sands up and loosening in the pen here comes the 01 oh the ground to third Lewis throws to First and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth the first Matt Olen here is Matt Olen that's inside that's inside wouldn't chase that time the wind to kick the two there's a strike [Music] [Music] one down base is empty nothing back at Target Field bottom of the inning and now for the twins Jose Miranda J the pitch Miranda 25 years old and was born in Puerto Rico right field down the line and that one slices [Applause] [Music] foul on the ground right side on to First and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth well I'm impressed with this guy's internal clock he knew he had plenty of time to take that extra step secure his grip on the baseball and make a strong accurate throw so up next edir Julien he reached on a walk his first time way inside gets out of the way he's been going after these guys consistently and as a result he's been able to keep his pitch count low throwing the ball very well right now the one slapped foul and a one-1 comes up empty that's strike two one ball two [Applause] strike ground ball right side marfield to First In Time H man for the fifth inning moving along two quick outs two outs fa is empty Christian Vasquez the next twin up to hit went down on strikes his first time through fought off foul [Music] now this offense has just been locked down almost five full Innings of shutout baseball and that's outside two strik the twins with a lot of ground to make up last half of inning number five got him looking that's a strike out he's through five without allowing a hit it's the Braves seven and the twins nothing back in Minnesota now it's the right fielder Ramon laurano Ramon laurano the pitch fast ball in for a strike it's O and one on that fast ball no ball two strikes kicks sandal fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two sets him down looking not sure about that call pitcher might have gotten a friendly strike three well definitely a borderline pitch right there and he didn't look too convinced as he headed back to the dugout you know those are tough ones that let go as a hitter but with the human umpire calling balls and Strikes it's always going to be on you to protect yourself with two strikes Kell up for the Austin Martin now at the plate Martin really thriving with the bat this season here at home the why the kick the pitch bounce to Third throw on to Olen leadoff man retired in the six now batting the command out there on the mound consistently throwing at the knees pretty impressive when a guy repeat his delivery like this and a pitch that's a base hit just kind of slic that one into Center no more having to worry about keeping the no hitter alive now that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay Runner on at first with one gone and been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to him so now to the plate for Atlanta Orlando Aria Orlando Aria and a pitch Short Stop takes a ball action in the pen down there Jorge alala getting loose out [Applause] there and the right-hander deals so a foul ball makes it one and two and the pitch just misses the mark outside the [Music] Zone good eye right there he's really tightening up his Hitting Zone with two strikes here I love it gets a piece and stays alive the pitch that one lifted to left walner sizes this one up makes the catch and there's one gone just pulled off of it a little bit right there that front shoulder coming open instead of staying closed if he does that he's going to be able to go up the middle the other way with some Authority instead of a fly out to left and there's a foul ball one down base is empty headed down the line and no one can get to it it's a foul ball and the righty deals pitches in the dirt one and two the count swings and misses struck him out two outs Bas is empty Whit marfield getting ready to hit merfield swinging a foul straight back the Braves up big in this one here in the top half of inning number seven pitch misses now one and two sh missed two balls two strikes next pitch misses way outside he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three hole of the inning here's Royce Lewis third baseman Morton back to work out towards right center field Harris after it he makes the grab one away woo he was all over that first pitch fast ball just barely missed it man this guy was ready to hit and next will be the cleanup hitter Matt Walmer swinging a foul straight back the twins with a lot of ground to make up here the bottom of the seventh and it's even up that's a little bit low that one finds the zone and that's strike two fights it off he'll see another two two now good eye on that [Applause] [Music] [Applause] spot gets a piece there we'll do it again good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the atat that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going well he's having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you're seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact oh he gloves it that'll drive you crazy as a hitter if you let it I mean he could have hit that ball more on the screws than he did and yet he's got nothing to show for it hang with him I know the feeling Max Kepler at the plate and that's off the Inside Edge and it's w to [Music] know highfly ball pretty well struck out towards Right Center that's back see you later he made him pay for that one his ninth Homer of the year it's 71 he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after a bat he's that confident that was one of those home runs where you really don't know if he got enough of it off the bat I mean he put a good swing on it clear but I wouldn't say he really got The Sweet Spot on the bat the exit V wasn't anything too impressive but it had all it needed for him to circle the pillars and here's the first baseman Jose Miranda bottom of the zone and a c strike two down nobody on that misses the Zone ball one the Braves Bullpen has some activity Ronaldo Lopez preparing to come on if needed Chavez warming up as well that pitch in for a strike and the count is one and [Music] two battle here as he fouls it away and the one two misses to even the count just one out away from Seven strong Innings and just at 100 pitches man pretty impressive they've got to be happy with what they've gotten from him out there today BS that off to the left and will do it again [Applause] next offering upstairs wow this guy's really battling up there as if his run is the game-winning run I love his tenacity fouled off again and it remains three and two ninth pitch of the atat do next that one is hammered right field lorano going back bangs off the wall the throw into second not in time he's got a double you I was watching his rounds during batting practice today so impressed with his ability to let the ball travel go back up the middle in the other way sometimes when you step in the Box during the game you get a little anxious and you get away from that but so far I've seen him stay consistent with his pregame [Applause] preparation Ryan Snicker out of the Dugout and he's going to make a change that's all for Charlie Morton and he exits with a nice lead threw the ball well and we'll have a new pitcher when we come back new pitcher on now Spencer schwellenbach compared to some days this is a pretty low leverage appearance for him so he should be fairly free and easy out there still have to keep yourself sharp and attack this strike zone so two down eduard Julien the next twin up to hit lifted in the air out to left settles under it brings it in and that's the inning but a solo home run will at least get this closer to respectability and the lead is stretched to 71 and we're back ready to begin the eighth and now the DH Marcelo Zuna Sans 26 years old and he was a fifth round pick back in 2018 Sans back to work just missed and now it's even up oh that's that's slur right there he threw it extremely well talk about just a ton of breaks so tough to get that Barrel to swing at a miss and the count one and two one ball two strik that one 95 to finish him off now batt and now Matt Olsen up to hit with this kind of lead he can swing freely try to hit the ball out of the park do what he loves to do that one in there across the letters oh one's the [Applause] count on the ground to First and he handles it himself for the out now batting catch Travis Dar now the catcher up to hit Travis darno one for three [Applause] and there's the strike man this guy's got a great feel for his breaking ball today next pitch is [Applause] outside two outs and there's a breaking ball that drops in there well two outs and a chance to put up a zero on the scoreboard here and that's not something that's come easy for this staff in this one got him looking and it's a one two three inning for the Braves and the Braves go down quietly and they're on Top seven to one and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the eighth and now the catcher comes up to H Christian Vasquez as he turns on the rubber with that good live arm delivers up and in and he gets out of the way I can't play around with him here it's a six-run lead at this point got to attack hitters even if you give up a solo shot Ella to First In Time One gone to the bottom of the eight now Austin Martin Austin Martin next twin up to hit first pitch doesn't find the Zone ball one no strike and that one missing low swings and misses at the pitch off the plate well and those hitters count sometimes can be a little too aggressive and a good pitcher will play off of that he's got to get a better pitch to hit and there's a ball now a highfly ball out to left Center Harris sizing this one up puts it away for the out and there are two outs now not back to the leadoff spot in the twins light up now a chance for Willie [Music] Castro pitch misses inside one and0 and a foul ball two down nobody on just off the Inside Edge that one down the line Fair ball now he turns and heads for second the throw in and he's out he's out cut down and that ends the Inning on the mound now for the twins Yan Duron and he's coming in a pitch on four days rest right here and that might not be a factor at all in terms of being Rusty but he should definitely be well rested lauriano comes up the hit the pitch right through there for a strike Duron a very difficult guy to get hits off of it's really rare for teams to string stuff together against it he wins every pitch and for a hitter sometimes a victory is just fouling off one of his pitches that's a hit man aboard on the leadoff single unless he beats himself somehow can't find it doesn't have the control command that day you pretty much forget about it man at first now the left fielder Jared [Applause] Kelner and that one's a little bit low and that is ball one the brave up big in this one here the top of the N that one a triple digits as a hitter there's even more pressure to take advantage of any mistake right yeah and you're hoping that you know somehow some way whether it's a hit by pitch a walk something bad happens because outside of that stuff is just too good to fail righty delivers spoils the two- strike pitch and he'll see another and he's got deception in his delivery and it's not that he's trying to deceive the hitters he just has this natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up it gets on them a little bit quicker than they anticipate even though they know what the velocity numbers are left- hand hitter Waits swing and a miss struck him out and a St strike out for the first out here in the night oh see it more commonly in the sport these days but man a triple digit fastball blown right by someone is still pretty awesome to witness I mean you got to be geared up and ready to swing it when a guy like this comes out of the bullpen because that fast ball it eats and if you're not ready you're going to be walking back to the Dugout Ella now the Box comes up empty with a swing there [Applause] [Music] through to the Outfield he forced a lot of pitches to be thrown and ends up collecting a hit just one of those advat you almost hate to see come to an end he smashed that ball the other way and kept it fair down the third Baseline did an excellent job of just throwing the barrel at the ball even though he was a little late on it next to hit Royce Lewis if you're going to get something going this is the time to do it you get the lead off man on everybody's got to look over the shoulder and say I'm just going to keep the line moving don't try to do too much nobody out runner at first on the ground right side and it goes just foul next pitch is outside [Music] righty to the plate Dives and he can't hang on the throw is still in time and they do get the out now back left this is what it's all about on that right side of the diamond when you got the first baseman involved in the pitcher as well first baseman does a great job knocks the ball down gets away from a little bit doesn't panic the pitcher's exactly where he's supposed to be nice feed and a nice play for the out he's two outs away and next for Minnesota Matt Walmer there's a strike o and one one out and a runner at second here in the last half of inning number nine next offering is in for a strike got him swinging for the strike out down to the last out for the twins dominating strike out there on just three pitches and that's what a good power pitcher can do to you he's hitting his spots filling up the strike zone sometimes he bats over before it really begins so they're down to their final out so up next for Minnesota Max [Applause] Kepler first off offering an adjust misses left field he's got it ball game and the Braves take this one in a blowout after four wins in a row you start to think a little bit that you're on a roll and that's the momentum that just takes on a life of its own players start hitting up and down the lineup never know who's going to come up with the big hit who's going to come
