[Music] and welcome in everybody glad you're with us MLB the show as inter league action for you this afternoon it's the San Diego Padres taking on the Tampa Bay Rays first pitch coming at you right after the break just about set to go down and on the m in this one Jeffrey Springs and Chris he's a guy that gets better when things get tough well he's been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it's the release point maybe it's the motion but just some way somehow they've got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side next off bring is in for a strike here's someone historically speaking that prefers Day games over night games so I'm excited to see what he does in this one in the air right field no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's one down as we take a look at the Padre's lineup and Chris this group has been struggling to put up runs lately well they haven't been on base a ton and and even when they are they haven't been hitting very well with the runners on base so they need a guy or two to really Step Up have some quality at bats hit according to the situation and sort of break out of this I think if they do the rest of this lineup will follow that one ripped gone he DS it off the foul pole it just got out of here and they jump out front it's one nothing that's a fun way to take the lead just hit one out of the park well he really crushed that thing down the line and everyone had to hold their breath until it clanked off the pole and every time that happens it just kind of feels like a trick shot or something but really it's just a stroke of luck that it stays Fair long enough now here's Jake cronenworth part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning they're definitely looking to do some more damage and that one is lifted in the [Applause] air low makes the catch and there's two down thir two outs Bas is empty here's Manny Machado now two down do on pass the ball two and one good spot there but didn't get the strike at the knees and doesn't seem too convinced by the call out there in the mound as he tries to get a better sense of the Umpire Strike Zone Off the Mark there and that's ball three one run across in the frame so far and we're just getting started here in the top of the first that one is inside ball four and I mean oh so close thought he tried to nibble right there and just missed his spot hitter didn't offer at it now he has somebody to worry about over at first here's Donovan Solano so a foul ball makes it one and two gets a piece and stays [Applause] alive and that's in dir stra swing and a miss struck him out and that is that but they're off to a good start as they pick up a run on this solo shot it's now one- nothing back now in Tampa Bay and on the hill in this one Michael King how about a report on him Chris well what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strikeout to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that's critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball [Applause] games got it by him for the [Applause] K so up next junior Camero [Applause] swing in a miss and the count one and [Applause] two swings through that one it's a strike out well anytime you can punch out the top two guys in a lineup to started inning got to be feeling pretty good out there on the mound because when you think of just having a distraction table Setters on the base paths and all of a sudden you're dealing with the number three hitter any distraction can cause you to serve up a cookie and in well plays made there and that retires to side Rays go in order one two three and it remains one nothing back here at Tropicana Field second inning set to go leading off Jackson Merill the Lefty fires oh great stop over the first and that's a great play for the out my goodness singy that was a great diving stop and maybe even a better throw yeah this out is all about athleticism I mean this guy did a great job knocking it down on the dive but he doesn't get the out without the cannon of a throw that was just impressive all around David peral at the [Applause] [Applause] plate one down base is empty and now the count out is even Clyde Washington with home PL duties in this one little bit of a low Zone Boo from Clyde nothing crazy though pitchers they work consistently down around the knees and are able to command their off speed stuff tend to have some pretty good success with him back there behind the plate and the slider just misses fans don't really understand the familiarity and relationship players and coaches have with umpires I mean you see them a lot yeah boo they're all out there trying to do their best and perform at a high level so when you respect that I think over time you can develop a relationship with them really nice swing as he gave that one a ride the opposite way but it sliced just foul down into the corner that had extra bases ridden all over it if it stayed [Applause] fair and that's Ball Four now a great back and forth and that it bad he had to lay off some really close pitches and somehow boo he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it stepping in Kyle [Applause] higashioka on the ground to First could be two goes to Second for one return throw to first got him double play and that'll do it so they go quietly there now to the bottom of the second it's the Padres one the Rays nothing and we're back down the third baseman Christopher Morell third [Applause] swing and a miss one and two oh that's that slurve right there he threw it extremely well talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that Barrel to hammers that one deep left field and forget [Music] it a g gantic blast and we're leveled it's 11-1 wow what a clutch swing right there and now anything can happen in this [Applause] game it's not easy to hit a breaking ball on the outside part of the plate for a home run but I think it caught just too much of that outside part of the plate maybe a little bit of a mistake but he didn't miss it at the plate so it's all tied up thanks to the Home Run and the batter now Jose cavero swing and a miss as he chases that one darting out of the Zone tied up here in the early going [Applause] bounced up the middle that's one out the bottom of the [Applause] second and stepping in for the Ray Taylor [Applause] walls here comes a pitch two ball one [Applause] straight swings and misses and now two and [Music] two and another ball three ball keep strike [Applause] right side slides for the Stop onto the pitcher pretty nice play there we saw a few skills on display there for the out technique was great reaction time was there and the slide was smooth watching that play Come Together was really fun Johnny Duca next to hit for the ray two outs and a foul [Applause] ball kicks and fires this one high in the air to left Center touches down that's a hit and that extends the [Applause] inning I don't think that pitch would have been called to strike but he did such a nice job of pulling his hands tight to the body and just getting enough of the barrel on it to be hard enough back up the middle for a knock so two down and now it's Jose [Applause] Siri that one not close and it's two and two well if he's going to Ste second you want him to go early in the count that way he's not a distraction to the hitter at the plate go ahead and get it out of the way so the hitter can focus on the [Applause] [Music] pitch two two now next offering misses down and Away number 28 in the on Deck Circle two gone but the goahead run is at first bottom half of inning number two got him and that is that so they pick up a run on two hits no errors and a man left we head on now to the top of the third ball tied 1-1 [Applause] back now in Tampa Bay on of the third inning so digging in now for San Diego Tyler Wade the pitch trying to bun his way on grabs it barehanded and they get the out well he gave the bun a shot there but not able to execute yeah I think he rushed it a little bit and when guys Rush can be a popup or can be bunted right back at a position player so the San Diego batting order turns over Louis arise stands in the one- one is fouled off one out base is [Applause] empty and a ball in two St STK high in the air out to right on his way over he's there he's got it and there's two [Applause] away now batting jerkson profar and another ball two out space is empty [Applause] D fast ball for a [Applause] [Music] strike still two and two after the foul ball though Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game inside almost got him it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bull fad and a swing in a Miss down on strikes and it's a three up three down inning Padres down in order still tied 1-1 [Music] and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the inning here's the catcher number 28 [Applause] just off the inside corner two and two it's a good [Applause] take swing and a ball popped up cronenworth makes the grab one away the firstan number two y so the raay batting order turns over and now the first baseman yandi Diaz [Applause] get on the ground to the right side Cronin work whips it to First and that quickly two [Applause] away J and now the DH Junior Camero [Applause] [Applause] here's a onew good job to fight that one off [Applause] and that's downed away two two two two and two he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with three- hole hitter coming up if he's walked right-hander kicks deals got him Rays retired in order nothing doing for Tampa score remains tied one1 back here at Tropic field as we go to the top of the fourth and now Jake Cronin work the wine of the pitch and another ball you know these Padres doing a great job boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I'm seeing very patient bats out of them he's only given up one run but the starter's pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today and now it's Benny Machado all tied up top half of inning number four got him to gone really love the pitch sequence right there I'm telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right now next for the Padres Donovan Solano that one almost got [Music] him the two- one wouldn't chase that [Applause] time that's a bullet but it goes [Applause] foul there's a swing and a drive and it's into the Gap makes the turn and heads for second and that's a [Applause] double everything came together for him just a solid swing right there caught it out FR and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel [Applause] great go ahead run on base Jackson Merill the next up for the Padres man it's second and that one Finds Its way through and that'll put Runners at the corners with two away showed some really nice patience in that at bad worked himself into a good count really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a tad bit longer and he hit the ball on the screws so two on with two away and now the right fielder David Peralta left the out of the stretch Runners at first and third comes up empty that's strike [Applause] two that ball is foul and the pressure is building Runners on first and third two away swinging a Miss huge strike out there well this guy competes hard we see the emotion there I love it great job of getting out of the [Applause] jam ready to go for the last half the inning and now here is Josh low here's a one- one rolled softly but that goes foul he's been pitching well but we'll see what kind of adjustment the hitters make this second time through the order we'll know if he's got really good stuff in this one or not on the ground to the left and it goes just foul [Music] and the rander deals on the ground of first and he handles it himself for the out now third Bas Christopher Christopher Morell next to hit for the Rays you talk about the power and the speed together well we knew he was going to be a stud just coming up making his way through the minor leagues and and quickly at this level an impact player next pitch is outside pretty easy to give up on that pitch right there started on the edge of the plate with the spin you know it's going to finish well off the plate one down base is empty and the two on hammered but foul and a pitch missed with a change up and the counts [Applause] full swings and misses it's a strikeout couldn't catch up to the heater good pitch right there I mean he's attacking a location that this guy the plate tends to have trouble with and there's just so much information in this day and age sometimes too much information but the guys that can take that information process it and then go out there Bo and execute the pitch go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating that's really good pitching right there and it's a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together and the batter now Jose cavero two down nobody on we're here in the bottom of the [Applause] fourth swing and a miss struck him out down in order go the Rays score remains deadlocked at one and we're back now Kyle higashioka he's not going to get cheated up there no he's not he's looking to do damage with every swing he takes ripped to short fires across the diamond and the lead off hitter retired in the fifth now batting Tyler Wade base is empty one away and we're in the top of the fifth tapped on the ground softly to short over to Diaz and the first two set down in the top of the fif the ble the Luis AR so the batting order turns over so here's the Padres DH Luis Aras and a pitch on the ground Padres go down one two three nothing doing there for the Friars halfway home all even want a piece we head to the bottom of the fifth now up for Tampa Bay Taylor walls Taylor W and a swinging Miss he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but you can never predict baseball fights It Off he'll see another and the pitch got him swinging looks like he's picked up right where he left off he's locked in at the plate when he's using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout and here is Johnny Duca and a one1 l drive and that should be extra bases around first heading for two in safely it's a double and his second hit couple of hits in a row for him here turned on that inside pitch nicely and ripped it down the line to pick up two bases that can be a tough pitch to keep fair but his timing was great a chance to take the lead and at this point in the game that could be a deciding run so digging in h [Applause] Siri the pitch that's outside and the count two and one as a pitcher you know the runner on second is ready to push things with this speed a base hit is probably going to be a big run so you really have to execute on the mount the count two and one to the left side but it is well [Applause] fouled man it's second battling here as he fouls it away [Music] [Applause] down to the dirt's swinging a Miss got him two gone after the strikeout and an excellent job keeping it right there and Chris that's a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off base and the defense breathes a s relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that's how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy and now the catcher for the Rays Runner edges away a second [Applause] [Music] and fouled off righty delivers oh yandi Diaz up next for the [Applause] Rays three and two payoff pitch headed down the line and that's a foul ball Duca stands at second with two gone HS and misses it's a strike out sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that's okay as long as he get results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam we're back and they make a change to start the six the new pitcher Richard love lady definitely a guy that pounds the strike zone makes hitters earn their way on base and rarely gets in trouble because of free passes here's the switch hitting left fielder jerx in Pro for kick sandio that to right on the Move he's got it and there's one down J stepping in for San Diego Jake cronenworth cronenworth the seventh round pick by the Rays in 2015 out of the University of Michigan where he was a two-way guy and in fact the Rays used him that [Applause] way they tried to get him to chase on a slider down and Away action in the pen down there Manuel Rodriguez up and throwing Alexander a lefty warming up as [Applause] well swing and a miss slider got him for strike three wow just great bite to that slider broke hard out of the zone and he just couldn't hold up the swing you know as a hitter that pitch is really hard to take and there's just not much you can do with it you know that but you don't want to get rung up by the Umpire here's Manny Machado hit hard that gets through Joey gets on base and keeps it going all over that one right there everyone's trying to elevate the ball in today's game but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground it's going to find some holes next to hit Donovan Solano and another ball two one two outside Jackson Merill waiting for a turn at the [Applause] plate oh he botches it and and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score it well from the time you're a little leager you're taught to hustle out of the box and give it a full Sprint through the base regardless of how you hit it and he didn't make great contact but the effort was there and he earns the base hit first and second two down here's the center fielder Jackson Merill in there and so now one and two [Applause] swings through it and that's a strike out I think the key is arm action on the change up when you can sell it like a fast ball you drop the velocity you get The Swinging mess and you walk off the field bottom of the sixth inning and here's the first baseman yandi Diaz the first B yandi the pitch and that's downstairs and outside meanwhile activity in the bullpen Jeremiah Estrada up and loosening in the pen Scott also getting ready [Applause] the pitch that one catches the zone two balls two strikes this game has been so tight feels like the next team to score will win it and the righty deals swings and misses struck him out it's almost like he's telling the guys in the bullpen stand down I got this the designated hitter J coming [Music] Haro so now the DH spot Junior [Applause] Camero next offering in there for a strike two and two [Applause] all tied up here in the bottom of the six pitch misses there and it's three and two almost 100 pitches through five and a thirds Innings I thinking he's probably done in the next couple of [Applause] batters one down base is empty foul ball left side he'll see another flew open a little bit with that front shoulder but was able to slow his back down just enough to make contact with that pitch keep theat alive and that's too high ball four now manager out of the Dugout now and it looks like we'll see a change on the mound Michael Kan won't go any further and that was a start he can feel pretty good about tie ball game and new pitcher when we get back [Music] left-hander out of the bullpen Martin Perez and he's been hit pretty hard at times this year so he's looking for better right now giving up more than a hit for any and stepping in is the Speedy Josh low [Applause] nice stop throws from the seat of his pants there's one what an acrobatic play right there knocks it down throws from the seat of his pants and just looks like he's playing in the backyard he makes it look really easy and here is Christopher Morell the Lefty ready and a one1 good eye right [Applause] there low off of first with two away [Applause] way out front for strike two now snap throw to first low back going to die and the pitch runner on the goal foul tip into the mid struck him out so a job well done from the frier bullpen that time seventh inning coming up all tied 1-1 top of inning number seven so digging in now for San Diego David Peralta [Applause] cor the two1 F off foul well on paper it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he's set to face batting from the left side same side he throws from up the middle and he knocks it down and he beats the throw he's safe go ahead run on base and now the catcher comes up to him Kyle higashioka Off the Mark there two and one [Music] the pitch that one ripped but foul the two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here swing it a miss and he struck him out and one away man that slider baring in in your hands like that it's just so tough to fight off it's kind of like a cutter and just can eat you up saw you off tell you what hitters have nightmares about that pitch perfectly executed out there on the mount here's the short stop at the play Tyler Wade out towards left Center no ranging after it no trouble here puts it away for the out out number two back to the top of the lineup Luis AR the next up for the Padre's two gone the possible go-ahead run at first next offering is in for a strike that front door slider such a devastating pitch you don't want to get beat by the inside fast ball so you cheat a little bit and then by the time it gets there it's out of of the Swing play foul ball still a one and two count two outs a swing and a soft liner brings it in for the third ey they get a lead off single but leave them stranded Midway in inning number seven and it's time to stretch All Tied 1-1 we're back in a new pitcher here to start at the bottom of the seven Jeremiah Estrada well he's got electric stuff coming out of the pin his strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season Jose cavier getting ready to [Applause] hit misses inside and the count two and one he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work away [Music] down the left field line should be extra bases now he'll turn for second and he greets the new arm from the bullpen with a double well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win so up next Taylor walls [Applause] the one-1 out to short Wade not in time he's safe tough play a nice backhand stop had to be perfect with the exchange and throw to get the out but it looked like he had to dig in there a little deeper like he was trying to get a split finger grip or something close play but that little extra time on the transfer made all the difference first and second no out Johnny Duca next to hit for the Rays next pitch is outside could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch [Applause] coming right-handed reliever fouled off he was late with the goahead Run standing at second here the bottom of the seven and another ball this is a really good feeling for a hitter at this point in the ball game you know that they don't want to walk you so you're going to get a pitch to hit you just better not miss [Applause] [Music] it Fly ball down the line and no one can get to it it's a foul ball L Drive face hit Runner around third on his way to the plate he will score and they take the lead it's two to one stringing them together that's three hits in a row didn't try to do too much with it just to really control simple swing we don't see a whole lot of that these days with hitters trying to launch and hit home runs but sometimes you got to shorten up just like that Jose Siri will hit next the one1 swing and a miss one ball two straight no outs Runners at first and [Applause] second swaging a miss the velocity blasted it right past him third time he struck out in this one and definitely an individual performance you want to flush he just hasn't looked very comfortable up there just one of those days but when you're still winning the ball game at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W and now the catcher for the Rays [Applause] at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boo two on one out bouns it off still one and two [Applause] got him swinging came inside with that two- strike fast ball nicely and just bunched him up on the inside part of the plate could get around on it and catch it out front many times if you do it's a foul ball and you know a lot of pitchers they really don't like working inside with two strikes because they do not want to hit that batter and when they've got him up against the ropes got to figure out a way to put him away did a nice job right there yandi Diaz now two two now swing and a ball popped up Solano sizing this one up brings it in and that is the third out of the inning but they pick up one run on the RBI single and this is now a 2-1 ball game it's Major League Baseball on the show well welcome back and a new arm of the mound to start the E Kevin Kelly he's been so good against lefties now ping for number 49 [Applause] kevinar climbs in on that left side he had a big swing for these guys way back in the first inning yeah Bo he didn't waste any time in this one the solo shot really got his team going and he's looking for more right here [Applause] swing and a miss he was late strike two looking to get the tying run on base got him and that's one away as the leadoff man is out in the eighth pretty big strike out right there to start this eighth inning down one any lead off base Runner really makes this inning a bit more interesting but now this offense has the switch from possibly trying to manufacture a run to needing to run into something or just try to string multiple hits together to get a run across the plate Bullpen movement for the Rays Colin Poe the Lefty looks to be getting himself ready trying to hold a one-run lead and we're in the top of the eighth next offering is outside Manny Machado Waits on De one down base is empty that Clips The Zone bounce full three and two definitely not a pitch location You're Expecting up there as a hitter when you know the guy's got a good Sinker ball if you can get in that location boy you've got to look top to bottom and that's going to make it very difficult to hit [Applause] and here it comes Cs and misses it's a strike out very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he's faced in this one getting straight to work man it's talked about a lot but relever are just so electric these days these aren't fun at bats if you're a hitter I'm so glad I'm retired Manny Machado up to the plate the one-1 good very solid Inning on the mound so far here in the eighth holding on to this narrow lead this is exactly what they were looking for two down nobody on as the Rays try and punch back down a run and another ball well as good as things can be it can be a tough day at the office even for the Skippers seeing the offense just sputter not able to get anything going two down nobody on it's down on strikes and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three impeccable command in that one three batters three strikeouts that's electric stuff out there on the mound back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eth Tanner scottan just trying to keep this one close here and this is where a bullpen can give their players a chance to fight back into the game well one run game diing in junior Camero [Applause] J here comes a pitch and that's outside two and one [Applause] swing in a Miss as he was late that time I think he was sitting off speed there swing and a miss got him to go up the ladder for the K oh you got to be pretty quick with the bat speed these days so many guys throwing in the upper 90s and you see the velocity on that one just tough to catch up to I mean guys are coming in and they're going Max effort they're not looking to go a long distance they want to to get as many strikeouts as they possibly can wouldn't chase that time B is empty one away here the bottom half of the eighth inning just missed green [Applause] one 3-1 is on the way and strike two ball strike out of the left Center for a line drive base hit so man aboard now with one [Applause] away love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way and next will be the cleanup hitter Christopher Morell [Applause] low the runner at first with one gone in the [Applause] inning that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going and now the Lefty and that one almost hit him straighten him up a little bit that one way inside so here we go base runner at first could be running on the pitch he's got good enough speed to steal the bag to get in scoring position even if it's a swing and Miss at the plate Scott keeping an eye on him base runner with a one-way lead right there all he's trying to do is get a look at the pitcher move had no intent of stealing on that pitch and a swing in a Miss he didn't make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strike out thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike Z we seen more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger here's the second baseman Jose cavero and that one is [Applause] [Applause] inside two out out that one down the line and that's just foul 3-2 two out runner on first lot of movement in the infield hitters got to stay focused on the pitch good play appearance there able to take the walk not what he wanted to do right there Bo that keeps this inning alive puts a runner in the scoring position and a chance for this offense to add on to their lead so two down Taylor walls next to hit for the Rays [Applause] ball to strike the short stop takes the ball it's a big opportunity right here but I love the way he's slowing the game down he's shrinking his Zone making sure he gets the pitch that he wants to hit two on two outs this one chopped on the ground but foul and he deals and there's the ball Johnny Duca next to bat for [Music] Tampa out towards right center field Peralta moving under this one and makes the grab that is the inning so they strand a pair ninth inning coming up it's the raay two and the Padre's won we're back and on the mound is the closer Colin Poe this softball has been really good against left-handed hitters and now the first baseman Donovan salano and poche ready to work way inside gets out of the way this hitter's looking for a fast ball but I'm not sure he's going to get one pitcher doesn't have to challenge him if he feels better about his off speed secondary stuff then stay with it close but called a ball three balls in a strike close pitch there and he's kind of wondering where it missed you know getting a feel for each ire strike zone is something that pitchers and hitters really have to think about and work on from game to game and sometimes from it bat to it bat swing in a Miss as he was out front that time swings throw it and that's a strike down well the first batter it's always a big one for the closer I mean you get that punch out you get settled in you feel like you're in command out there on the mound from the jump and kind of prevents any doubt from creeping into your mind or the fielders that are playing behind you that you know you're going to wrap this thing up right through there for a Strike wow we call that Keyhole even though it's right there and looks pretty good if he doesn't love it he's not going to swing that early in the count swing and a miss struck him out this is definitely what a team likes to see out of their closer come in and just destroy all first two batters two strikeouts see if he can strike out the side
