play how Lefty is the she's quite Lefty she uses the forehand crosscourt really well to open the court and then is looking to go around her backand and play that inside out forehand as well really cra y as well and it's so interesting because she her weakness used to be if you can talk about somebody who's only 20 years old used to be the second surf but now she's winning the second most points on tour when it comes to her second serve that's how much she's improved in this season she's barely been broken coming into the this fourth round four 4 game we going to see some big babe tennis from this woman bab tennis we will we will but she also has the ability to play those extended rally as well she is not a ball basher in the classic sense if you if you know what I mean she can build the point and she's looking to build the point with that forehand side that doesn't mean her backhand is weak unfortunately for her opponents it's just that she likes to build the point on the forehand side if you can get it with Pace into the forehand that's where she can struggle so I'm looking for some backhand cross courts from Jess Pula who has maybe Jess P the heaviest backand on the WTA tour when she connects L 15 love for [Applause] nicely done here by Jess Pula shows off one of her great qualities how early she recognizes the short BS and how quickly she's up to them of course has a lot to do that she stands very close to the Baseline 15 and that is that forehand angled cross cord big strength of Schneider and here we have Mark NOS one of the mark marks On's team you Advantage even though she missed it this is a very very important shot for her today here we have Igor andreev Schneider's coach very good player himself top 20 I would say we go that's advantage to F right here man this is what you have to avoid that all cost is those somewhat neutral balls through the center of the court because she's so good in going around okay that was very precise but that's what she wants Schneider she wants to control the Baseline rallies from the center of the court with her forehand really don't we all do want that yeah some more some less advantage [Applause] [Music] see there's no country behind Schneider's name she's Russian a proud Russian her father's German so there was a a conversation there for a while right about maybe her switching her citizenship and a lot of people around her wanted her to to get a a German passport but as much as all that what's happening in Ukraine the Russian war there is a horror she thinks linking Sports is wrong to a war she said we often discuss this but I'm against I told my parents and the coaches who tried to convince me that as a person who has played for Russia for so many years I know that I simply cannot do otherwise di Schneider says I was taught to be a patriot of the country she also said it's not good to change citizenship when it's such a difficult time for all the people in Russia anyway that's why there's no country next to her name Advantage P Pula down 1540 this is turn into a long game there's the one game for great hold by Jess Pula here some resistance in the beginning stages from Schneider but well done and holding on Schneider spent some time at the University of North Carolina but she said even when she was there all my thoughts were focused on my game she said I played many matches which which helped me progress physically and mentally she said I learned how to handle pressure so that did her some good that's not perect four 15 that was a nice change up with the slice of Jess pulas but into the forehand side where schneid can do so much damage when she has a bit of time I think the change up would be better advised into the backend side of Schneider where she prefers a bit of pace into the double hander four 15 [Applause] they [Applause] okay oh first break of the match goes to Jessica Pula P Elites two games to one for okay so now at this top part of the draw where this match is being played out things have held pretty well J is still in there pagul is still in there Danielle Collins in her last US Open went out the 11 seed also on this half of the draw rakina pulled out in the second round and aeno went out so Waki is through there hadaj Maya Muka has just she's won the first set against the fifth seed Jasmine palini and she's up 43 in the second now but it's interesting even the players who are unseated into this fourth round are either former world number ones and major Champions like Caroline vaki or karolina moova who I think we all know what she is able to do finalist at the French Open just a couple of years ago then she had some rist surgery but boy is she looking good here I love watching her play she's just taken out the fifth seed Jasmine palini of course palini got to the finals in the French Open the finals of Wimbledon Sarah orani won Gold in doubles in Paris just a few weeks ago Carolina Muka coming through in that section that lost yena aeno early she's in the quarters here L 15 15 back inside Ash Stadium now karolina mova with a terrific win over Jasmine [Applause] palini want to hear my Caroline who Story please always I should have that sales on P there so it was the C year Andrea so no fans you know this place was empty I was here and I was sitting way up high where our booths were just watching practice and there was the prettiest Strokes the most beautiful mover I'd ever seen and from up here I couldn't tell who it was so I made my way all the way down it was so empty you can get right on the court and I watched Carolina mova make this game look prettier than just about anybody I'd ever seen she didn't do much that year boy I just couldn't get over it no if you were uh in sucker they would hire you right away as a soccer Scout for Manchester United because boy do they need a good sucker right now over there good ey Mary yeah oh I I was mesmerized really dazzled by how beautifully she moved and her Strokes her net play ready that's going to fall out what a point by both women here trading breaks early but everything's still in order to all us open.org you want to find out how it was that mova just beat palini go to all those platforms and catch up on everything you can find out also that badosa now plays the woman who knocked out Coco golf in the last round and how Emma Navaro did that that's why you put the reading things so that people stick to the script [Applause] yes 15 okay okay thank you than I'm let 15 and you can just see how that heavy shot into the forehand can trouble her when she doesn't have the time when she has the time the forehand is a fantastic weapon but if you can get into it with a bit of pace let's [Applause] she was uptight against that serve wasn't she Pula thir [Applause] oh yes an angle she created from the middle of the cord how did you do that let's take a look this is a nice change of pace and then with really no angle to work with she somehow found this one right here on into the short point in the court another break point [Applause] and she indicated I should have gone crosscourt but that is a big contention between her and Mark NOS who oh really what does Noy say he refuses to give her the crosscourt approach he wants her to approach down the line but Jess just insists I'm doing the crosscourt approaches something to do with angles I hear okay let second shot that back hand down the line she can change direction so seamlessly no way for the opponent to tell when she she's going to go crosscourt or down the line exactly the same shots that really does look like the same stroke right that's her super power that's drive and P has the break 3-2 opening set these two trying to get a spot in the quarters Pula leads three games to two for all right so let me ask you this of the players remaining on the women's side is there one absolute standout um no absolute standout I think Sabal Lanka is a bit mhm ahead as a favorite compared to all the others just because of her great showing in Cincinnati but I have to say the best match of the tournament so far was the Jang against vage match last night yeah I heard you were watching that one I was watching that and uh no it was incredible quality really such great shot making and Jen prevailed in the end the question will be can she recover with no sleep good news is she is 21 years old so she probably can if it was up to us we probably couldn't marry what do you think for sure I know you can you can recover from anything clearly um clearly so sabalenka and Jung the second seed against the seventh and then on the other half of the bottom it's Bosa how about Good Old Bosa playing Navaro yeah both players with their own narrative this year but Paula so good to see her back she's played some fantastic tennis time W Washington DC [Applause] four 15 go come on [Applause] third Gula getting a lot of instruction from the Marky marks the other Mark in her Camp has been there longer yeah than those right Mark Markin she's playing very fast and very deep J Pula there was this Narrative of her being just solid and not really having a weapon anybody who's ever played her knows that that is the falsest narrative that ever existed in tennis really wow her shots are so pacy and flat and [Applause] uncomfortable and is this the year that Jess Pula gets past the quarterfinals of major for the first time let what has kept her from from the quarters to the semis is it mental is it that she's losing to people that you're just better than she that's my Uncle Frank amb what's holding up the delay I like that um I think it's a couple of things I think at one point they're not reaching the semis becomes a mental hurdle I think that's definitely part of it I think also it was the serve for a while especially the second serve she would run into players who had a bigger serve got more free points and then the third I think in the quarters everyone is playing well and she has such a nice clean game that she would almost make the other feel great about that game wow that's something and that's why the Marky marks are trying you see her applying the slice coming to to the net a bit more often trying to play ugly at times dirty it up little yeah cuz that's the downside with her great Strokes I played her a couple of times once you get a hold of them and you get used to that pace you feel like you can't miss anymore because they are so clean and always land in your sweet spot it's like she's feeding you the kind of balls you want to hit right yes exactly so did you be I did but she was very young as to be said she was just coming up and then I lost to her in um towards the end of my career when she was already the J Pula we know of today third making four they and the high return position of Pula is working here Schneider winning only five points when the second serve comes into play of 12 only serving at 45% is the russan [Music] there she is diring it up a bit just Pula how did you hear a team where he use the slice yeah so that's definitely a thing they are working on as the Pula team [Applause] this is looking good for the veteran Americans change please Jess Pula now 5-2 opening set Pula leads five games to two first set so as a German can you explain to me the expression way to do something way to way to do it yeah way to go way to use this life way there should that there should be a that's the ah okay because the grammar to me sounds a bit off that's okay so they are just shortening of course we don't have time to go into it you know what I'm saying we're in New York here we got to speed things up yes yeah people need to make money time time is money time is money there's no time to end sentence to sentences in full all right we have to have another conversation about this the coaching that's allowed okay after every stinking Point some of these coaches say something I I want to get into that discussion right now or for the next change over okay we've got time okay just starting week two time stands are really filling up now inside Ash Stadium first match of the day here on this good looking labor day Monday L 15 love for [Applause] that was a perfect Point beginning from the surf with a lot of sze into the body and then just continued to gain ground until she was all the way up at the net and had an easy put away thir [Applause] [Music] third day 14 [Applause] game great to start this the second [Applause] set done by Schneider and I think we forget or I forget that this is the first time she's ever reached the stage of a major tournament round of 16 the fourth round because she has played so well this season you mentioned the three titles won on all different surfaces it seems like she's been around forever but she's only 20 years old in fact two years ago she was in the semi-final here in the girls event oh two years ago she won the junior Australian Open [Applause] 15 now here we have what you just mentioned both players not great on first serf but Schneider [Applause] particularly third 15 let's for [Applause] 1450 game P leads five games to four first s okay here's what I want to say mhm I get why there's coaching now I get why it's no longer illegal I get why everyone was doing it anyway if you cannot enforce it in endorse it I get all of that now do you happen to like this kind of coaching situation I prefer the ones ass set on court coaching where the coach would have to run yeah and labor on Labor Day run out and sit down I will say to be fair especially on the big courts they might say a lot and our mics pick everything up but the player rarely ever hears them particularly when they are on the far way side the crowd is so loud and I think a a lot of coaches also just let their stress out through that it's similar with Superstition arranging the bottles in a parallel line doesn't actually help you play the game but it makes you feel like you are playing the game better I see and I think a lot of coaches are also exerting some way of control in the form that they can by thinking they are constantly coaching but the player doesn't hear all of it on the big courts at least on the smaller courts I was here during fan week that's a completely different story you can hear every single word and that's dicey let's put it this way we've been talking about that coaching is legal now and some coaches you can hear them after just about every point we'll hear more from pula's coaches because she's over on their side this game [Music] see I'm not a big fan I can tell I want to go back to Illegal coaching oh okay I think you're the you're a fan of the art of subtlety well yes you know and then if you get nailed you get fined but if you get away with it you know that's something too I mean illegal coaching was more fun let's face it come on right there were hand signals going on and there were the coach was standing up and trying to get their attention and I don't know I miss the old days of when coaching was illegal okay you know what I'm saying yes more we want to have more rules be broken is what you're saying well I just think it would be more creative more inventive it could be hand puppets yeah I see what balloon folding have to guess what they're trying to say to their players players actually have to try to figure things out for themselves more you know when people say well you get so much Insight from the coaches how how often are the coaches say all right here we go here we go right here right here you know what I'm saying I know what you're saying you miss illegal coaching I think you made your point well that's two great job right here come on Schneider is really arrived here on Arthur Ash Stadium played two of the best games and now another great one Pula here unfortunately with the shot that Shaga loves most the neutral one through the center of the Court break point use [Applause] advantage [Applause] oh she missed it it is much better by Pula she needs to find the angles again toss back yes too far in front too far in front here we go oh there it is this might save her the set now Mary let's see see let's see what's too far in front the Ball Toss on her surf is too far in front all right let's fix that and she is only 51% first serves mate this may be a crucial tip from the side here one Z coaches versus Mary K lock down right here lock down oh here comes right here again set point for the American there she been up 52 got a little close there but Pula takes the [Applause] and for those who have missed the Mary marks coaching Mark NS just said try and play a bit more into the forehand side so you can change direction on your backand to Jess Pula third [Applause] B 1450 14 [Applause] one of my all-time favorite moment in onc court coaching remember when the what were they allowed a couple of times a set to come down yeah the player could call the coach and he could yak yak to her on the change over Danielle Collins was she had been given coaching instructions and I was that in her coach said what's that I think it was in Char yeah so so her coach had told her this this babe doesn't hit hard you know you got this whatever she called him down because she was losing and she said remember when you said she doesn't hit hard have you been watching that oh she she just wanted to dump on him like there was no coaching she was just scolded him it was like Peak Daniel colge to be fair Danielle Collins was right in that and just Pula really needs this game here because Schneider has played a lot more freely in the past 15 minutes nice surf there let's [Applause] gametic serving here from Jess Pula really made that improved shot second count here in this game is perfect Point here by Pula who does what her coach has told her to change direction and that is so important against Schneider who plays so well when she can set up in the corner for her shots and Pula just didn't allow her that at all mve the ball around beautifully 15 15 that's thr two [Applause] [Applause] yes beautiful angle and you will see that Lefty forehand like a hook perfect you think all that work on the ball yeah help helped it go over when it hit the net huh [Applause] yeah please she's trying to hit a tough shot there from so far back Beyond on the Baseline gul's right up against it did she miss that yes Advantage Schneider this a good play through the center but the court was completely open ball you we talked about this earlier the change of pace is better placed into Schneider's backhand where she wants a bit of pace to work with use Advantage Schneider [Applause] [Applause] and there is a very clear pass emerging here the moment Pula can change directions frequently she is in control [Applause] Advantage SN [Applause] let's for [Applause] Advantage Schneider for oh man she walked into the shot didn't set up a long service [Applause] game like she was going to end it right there did it and again the change of Direction is the game plan that brings her break point here [Applause] Advantage Pig [Applause] oh boy F and Pula has the break has a set lead as well Pula leads two games to one second set and by one set to l [Music] you [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] time 1:20 in the afternoon on this Labor Day Monday sort of looks like P's got this under control your level here we go come on serve plus one serve plus [Applause] one she can't stand your level is what Pula is being told B let second set nice done here by Schneider Pula is just doing a great job in neutralizing that forehand not giving her too many of those shots that's why it looks like Schneider is not playing a great match but it's really pagola denying her her biggest strengths and she might still find a way into this she's a very feisty competitor Schneider is she won't go away so easily love and it's not like Pula has kicked her to the curb you know she made that nice little comeback to get that opening set to 54 and if some of these shots she's missing start Landing it could get complicated 15 [Applause] she gets placement Aces doesn't she Pula that one 88 milph and this is the one that she didn't use as frequently as she does in the last year or so that body sered with a bit of slice that continues to move really hard for a lefty particularly gets into the hip almost third fath [Applause] stay up right there finish it you got plenty of [Applause] time Advantage good [Applause] [Applause] another placement Ace that one 87 mil an hour in the side pocket had a bit of kick on it almost you could see Schneider moving to the T usopen.org it's actually pretty handy a lot of good stuff on there you can track down scores match highlights dessert recipes [Applause] everything in Mora you open everything you need W nicely done man you can see here service games one you mention it at the very top of this game Mary she has barely been broken all tournament long and today just struggling on serfing a lot of that has to do with the high return position of Pula who is taking time away from her opponents in two ways by positioning herself high up on the Baseline and end by playing fairly fast as well we talked about how this young woman here needs a bit of time on that forehand when she has it she can be devastating but J Pula has really ever given it to her today game [Applause] there for the americ suceed is there a worst feeling on a tennis court that when you're get that than when you're getting rushed you know everything's happening defense right you're getting robbed of time you can't think straight everything gets muddled right yeah yeah and I think we keep I mentioned it before but we keep talking about Schneider as if she's been around for so long because she's been yeah because she's been so successful so quickly but this is the first time she's played on as big of an occasion as here the title she won were 250 levels great successes she played great but the semifinal in Toronto was the first time she reached that stage of the big tournaments the first time she beat a top 10 player so I think she must have already felt Rush In general coming out here and then on top of that playing somebody who does that anyways with her game with her positioning on the Baseline if you if you are getting rushed you just you're in a state of emergency MH yeah just the stress hormon going through the roof time Jessica Pula serving 3-2 [Music] how flat is pula's ball it is very flat actually the only other player it reminds me of was Angie Kerber when she played well different because she's a lefty but it also has the tendency to fly through the cord push through the cord and I see a lot of it today with Schneider where you think you have the ball in front of you in the perfect Strike Zone and then it continues to push you back just a little bit it's maybe a millimeter or two an inch whatever you guys do over here just making her a little late yeah exactly that's that little part is the difference 4 K that forehand angle has really worked wonders for Pula today you can see here schneid is not very tall has to reach for the ball and then so much room open 4 [Music] B change please news pigula leads four games to two second couple of more games and and Jessica Pula will get the winner between Samson Nova and the top seed Shante first of all what's up with Sansa sansen NOA how come she's having such a good year how good is she she when she's playing well she's good as they come she has such a she's such an imposing game really nothing you can do when she's on one of the best servers on tour she catches lightning in a bottle watch out this is a tough match up for igos Fant who struggles against the big babe tennis at times 15 [Applause] 15 glimpses of what she can do every now and then Schneider and the w UT is lucky to have her hopefully around for another 10 to 15 years only 20 years old fantastic Talent on the WTA tour where there's plenty of players with courtcraft you know good move all of that is there anything that trumps power I think there is actually I think the ability and J Pula has that the ability to focus for long periods of time I think that is an incredible quality stepy gra had that like nobody else she was just locked in from first point to last never letting up these days who does that best now on I think Igan when she's playing well has that ability to focus on a single thing for long periods of time I really think that is a superpower not a lot of people have Novak jokovic of course on the men's side and you can feel that as an opponent is advantage pul and some nice allcore tennis here from Jess P Pula that's the aspect of her game that she's still working on play a bit dirty at times make the opponent feel uncomfortable in so many ways he needs one more game to's get into the quarterfinals Pula leads five games to two second set and by one set to Lear so if you had a Young Junior player your dream Junior player wouldn't wouldn't be the one g king right now is getting a huge hand oh yes is this whole Tennis Center named after the great one your dream Junior player would have you wouldn't first want Power no for me what I would look for is a certain kind of athleticism the first person that comes to mind is J chin Wen I think she has the perfect tennis body yeah I would look for the a work ethic and the ability to show mental resilience and the the ability to focus I think those three of course you have to have a certain kind of talent but we are talking about somebody who is allegedly already successful in junior tennis but I think these three things make for a long sustainable career can you teach power Ah that's a good question I saw it with laa zimont it's the only player I've ever seen it with laa zigon a German player who was a pusher quote unquote a crafty one yes a crafty one and she was always hovering around the 200s and I realized this is not quite enough and adapted her game found a bit more in it went to the net more frequently and has made a great career for herself it is definitely more challenging to teach somebody who's crafty powered and to have a powerful player and teach them a bit of craft [Applause] 15 [Applause] 15 four got thr G 15 [Music] 14 couple of chances now for Jessica pagura get into the quarter climers she doesn't again another six and all from her Rock Solid performance another rock solid performance hasn't dropped a set yet Jess Pula into the quarterfinal and she is a much improved player very dangerous is this the year she can go one step further exactly right and again it won't be easy could be shanteek she's playing well isn't she well done
