trust in you we thank you that we can rely fully upon your word that what you say you will do God we can trust fully and completely and and what you say we can uh we can take it to the bank this morning that if you said it you will do it so God we we sing We Sing out to you this morning I trust in you because because you have never failed you have never left this down you have heard our today that there that you are here to heal to deliver to set free to move and to answer prayers God we thank you that that you are two or three are gathered you are present this morning so God we ask that you would just have your way in this place and throughout the rest the remainder of the service today God we pray that you would just speak to us that you would just move in our hearts today that you would just uh Minister Lord to those that need a touch from you that those watching online this morning those here in this room we pray that you would just move this morning by your spirit and touch each one we thank you God for for your presence today in Jesus name amen amen well before your seated if you would greet one another this morning if you may shake some hands to welcome one for those of us here in the room those online this morning we're uh going to be continuing on in the sermon series that we began uh several weeks ago titled better and so if you've missed any of those again we're in week three of the series you can go online they're all archived on our YouTube channel but we've been talking about this idea this uh the subject of better and Jesus is better than than and greater than all things and so uh we've been looking in the book of Hebrews and so if you uh want to go ahead and turn there you can do so now Hebrews chapter 1 is where we'll be and we'll get there uh in a little bit uh but in order for uh something to be better uh we understand that there must be something of uh of lesser value something of lesser importance uh something that would be of a lower quality or standard and so for something to be better there's got to be something lower than a better there's got to be something of a lower quality or standard and so I thought it was interesting I was in Lowe's the other day and and so you know you're looking at different things and maybe looking for uh you can you can find like the most expensive item or you can the same item you can find it uh you know a different brand and you a little bit cheaper and and so in Lowe's looking at paintbrushes the other day I noticed that the brushes had different ratings on them and so the the cheapest of the paint brushes that they said that they were labeled economy brushes and and they were the cheapest brush and but above that the shelf right above uh was a the brush of same size the same look to it but it said good on it and then above that the ones that were hanging on the rack the ones that would have been of a higher quality the ones that had the higher price tag those brushes were labeled better and so and comparing those brushes you could tell that there was a difference than whether it be the the amount of the the bristles in the brush the the the the texture to the uh to the brush you know there's a there's an improvement from one set of brushes to the next now they were all the same size they were all the same width across but one was better than another there was an improvement it's a progression and and finally the one that was the best the the better of the three and so the third obviously the one that was better is of a better quality and a and and and price as well and so good is acceptable good you maybe you say well good will get the job done I don't need the the best I just need something to to get the job done a good a good is acceptable it it meets the expectations and and it meets the standard that I have for this particular job but but then there is better better means to be of a higher standard to to be superior to to be larger or greater better is always a suggested improvement over good and so maybe it's a higher level of quality or uh better Parts better size better condition better shape a better attention to detail but it's it's an improvement over good so better is it's above and beyond the basic level and it so better exceeds your expectations and so we've been in this series again talking about better and we've been in the New Testament book of Hebrews and we've been working our way uh through uh the chapter one really and and this whole idea of that Jesus is better and so the the author of Hebrews this is a theme that reoccurs throughout the book the author wants his readers to understand that Jesus is better Jesus isn't just good he's not just adequate he's not just uh you know the something we can get by with but Jesus the far exceeds that which is good he is better he's better than anyone or anything he he's Superior to all things he far exceeds anything we could ever hope or imagine and so again as I've been as we've uh began the series talking about the book of Hebrews just as a a quick recap Hebrews was written to Jewish Believers in the first century really before ad70 and and it was written to encourage Believers that were struggling in their faith they were discouraged they were facing persecution and hardship and and so they were realizing hey following Jesus is more difficult than what we had originally thought standing strong for Jesus in the midst of persecution it's more difficult than we had ever anticipated and and so these Jewish believers they were tempted to give up they were tempted to compromise tempted to give up Jesus to to maybe achieve a a a a gain to to maybe avoid persecution to avoid trouble to avoid prison or even death and so they thought if if we just would we just put Jesus to the side if we just uh if we just walk away from our faith and we and we we we give up Jesus we can spare Our Lives we can have comfort and ease the the the government will leave us alone and we can live our lives in peace and so the author of Hebrews is writes to the Jewish Believers to say Jesus is better he's better than your comfort he's better than your convenience he's better than anything that you could achieve anything that you can imagine in fact Jesus is better than life itself and so don't throw away your faith in Jesus and and hopes that life will become easy and that you'll you'll achieve uh you know maybe the peace and security here in this life Jesus is better than any of these things in fact Jesus is better than our best day Jesus is better than our best relationship Jesus is better than any plans you could ever make he's better than anything you could ever hope to achieve in this life Jesus is better he's better than all these things he's he's better than anything we could ever uh imagine and so the author of Hebrews he he's driving this point across to us that Jesus is better and so if we really believe that Jesus is better then our lives would reflect that we would live differently it would change the way that we live and the way that we respond to circumstances it it would impact our choices it would impact the decisions that we make if we really believe that Jesus is better if he's better than anything that we could ever achieve anything that we could ever earn anything that we could ever have in this life it would that that alone would change how we how we view others and how we treat others and how we live our lives and and the choices that we make and so Hebrews chapter 1 beginning with verse four is where we'll be this morning last week we begin with the first opening uh verses of Hebrews verses 1 through three and and and those first three verses it talks about how Jesus is better than the prophets so it starts out and and Compares all these different things that that that Jesus is better than so the Jewish Believers that you know as they read the Old Testament and as they study the the Old Testament scriptures the prophets were were pretty important people it was the prophets through whom God spoke it was the prophets that that spoke God's word to the people that the prophets were God's Representatives they were his mouthpiece to speak God's word to to give God's message to the people it was the prophets who corrected the people and rebuked the people who called the people of Israel to repentance and back to the worship of the one true God and so the prophets that throughout the Old Testament they they they are looked to for for answers and so the people when they wanted to know what God was saying or God was doing they would look to the prophets the pro the prophets they spoke God's message to the people but now the right of Hebrew says but yeah the prophets were great and and and God used those prophets mightily and they did some great things I mean we think of the Prophet Elijah or Elisha and we we looked at Elisha's life there a few weeks ago and the things that God did through the prophets and so the writer of Hebrews says to the Believers yeah the the prophets were great and they did amazing things God use them mightily but to understand this Jesus is still better than than the prophets yeah God spoke through the prophets and and they were God's mouthpiece and and God's message came through the prophets but Jesus is better than the prophets Jesus is the message that God wanted to send to the world Jesus is the message that that God was speaking through the prophets the prophets they would share a message and and and their each message would build and was like building blocks to build this complete picture but the prophets only ever re received a small portion of the message but Jesus was God's message revealed he when Jesus came through uh through the the Virgin birth of of Mary Jesus was God's message revealed through the person and work of Jesus Christ that Jesus was the the visible uh presence of the invisible God Jesus revealed the father and so the author of Hebrews says though uh the prophets were great and though God use them in a mighty way and as God's mouthpiece Jesus is better than the prophets and this morning as we move on we're going to see that Jesus is not only better than the prophets but he's also better than the angels and so before we look at what the text says in verse 4 of chapter 1 in Hebrews before we look at that in in Matthew 16 verse1 15 Jesus poses a question to his disciples he asked them the question who do you say that I am and so the disciples they answered well some say you're this and some say you're that some say you're John the Baptist some say you're uh uh this some say uh this everybody has a different opinion of who they of who they think you are but Jesus he responds with I didn't ask what everybody else thought who do you say than I am and so throughout the ages that has been the question question who is Jesus and and so uh the religions and people have tried throughout the years to acknowledge that Jesus existed and that Jesus was a good person or a good man but they have tried to deny the reality and the deity of Jesus they've tried to acknowledge yeah Jesus walked on this Earth he was he's a person of history but to to go as far as saying that he is the Son of God to say that that he is the the only begotten son of God that he died to take away the sins of the world to to acknowledge Him as God that that that's they they've tried to diminish that aspect of Jesus so one of Satan's tactics is to convince people that Jesus he was great and and and and did great things but the Satan wants to convince us and to convince the world that Jesus is a little bit less than God Jesus might be close to God but Jesus Jesus really isn't one with God and so there are false religions that they will teach that Jesus was was a God and maybe even a powerful God but he he's never he's never put compared to God God Almighty that he's always a little bit lower than God and so these false religions will teach that that Jesus was a uh was a created being and that he came he was created by God and that and that he was the first born of the angels and it was through Jesus though that everything was created and so they distort the truth of God's word they distort Jesus deity to get people to believe that Jesus is a little bit less than who he claimed to be the people in false religions will hold a high view of Jesus but they won't confess his deity they won't they won't acknowledge that Jesus is who he said he is that they won't acknowledge that he is the only begotten Son of God that he has always been and will always be he is one with God and Jesus said if you have seen me you have seen the father Bishop Hanley mle he once said a savior not quite God is a bridge broken at the further end a savior that's not quite God is a bridge broken at the further end you see if Jesus Jesus isn't truly God then then none of this works our Salvation is is it's it doesn't work it it doesn't save us if Jesus isn't who we said he is then if that if he's not God In the Flesh if he isn't who we claim to be then then we aren't then we really have no hope of Salvation if Jesus isn't God it's a bridge broken at the further end and so this the author of Hebrews writing to Christians he now goes on to say the people had this belief that maybe Jesus was a little bit lower than the angels and the author of Hebrews wants us to recognize Jesus is superior to the angels Jesus is f greater he is better and so the text begins in verse four and says so he became Jesus became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs for to which of the Angels did God ever say you are my son today I have become your father or again I will be his father and he will be my son and again when God brings his firstborn into the world he says let all God's angels worship Him in speaking of the Angels he says he makes his angels spirits and his servants flames of fire but about the son he says you are thr Throne oh God will last forever and ever a skor of justice and will be the skor of of your kingdom you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness therefore God your God has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of Joy he also says in the beginning Lord you laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the works of your hands they will perish but you remain they will wear out like a garment you will roll them up like a robe like a garment they will be changed but you remain the same and your years will never end to which of the Angels did God ever say sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a foot stol for your feet are not all Angels ministering Spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation and so the author of Hebrews here in this text he he he makes this comparison that angel talking about the angels and and and and saying there's the Angels but Jesus is still greater than the Angels but why this uh talk of angels why does the author spend so much uh uh text here these verses these 10 verses talking about angels and this focus on Angels well again in the Old Testament the the Jewish believers they would have known the Old Testament scriptures and they would have read of of all the different times that angels were were talked about in the scriptures and so angels are mentioned over 100 times in the Old Testament and in the New Testament they're talked about 160 times and so in the Bible an the word Angel it it means messenger and so we read uh time and time again that these the Angels God's angels that that that are in heaven that they are God's Divine messenger bearers that that they that deliver God's message to to to PE to the people we see in the Bible that angels have specific functions the Angels continually worship God they're gathered around his throne they're worshiping him the Angels they communicate God's message so then they they minister to Believers they're ministering Spirits they communicate again God's message to uh to the people and and as we come to the end of the age as when the second coming and the final judgment angels will play a part in carrying out God's the judgments in the Old Testament we read that Angels Came and they if you remember the story of of lot living in Sodom and in the city of Sodom and Angels Came two of them came to rescue lot and his family and thus the Angels they they they got lot and his family out of the city and then those same Angels destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah with fire it was an angel that was sent to break an Assyrian Siege and around the city of Jerusalem and and they struck dead 180,000 Assyrian soldiers and you can read about that in 2 Kings chapter 19 for Daniel an angel was dispatched to send a Daniel a message about Israel and about the future and in Daniel chapter 10 and Angels time and time again serve go they they they they they are dispatched by God's command to for certain task and to deliver certain messages to do certain things well how many angels are there well the Bible doesn't specifically say but there are a lot of angels in heaven and when Jesus was born that it says that Angels appeared to the Shepherds in Luke Chapter 2 it says a great accompany of the heavenly host appeared John the Revelator in the Book of Revelation he was taken to heaven in a vision and and it says in Revelation 5 and: 11 he said I looked and heard the voice voices of many angels numbering thousands upon thousands and 10 thou 10,000 times 10,000 there are multitudes of angels angels that angels in great numbers and multitudes that that are in heaven and and so then the Bible talks about how most of the time Angels aren't seen they're in the they're in the spiritual realm but there are times when our eyes are opened and we are able to see Angels uh several weeks ago when we talked about the life of Elisha and remember that he came outside and of his tent and he saw that he was surrounded by the enemy in 2 Kings chapter 6 and his servant said what are we going to do but if you recall Elisha prayed and the servant's eyes were opened and and he saw a great multitude of an army of of Angels Heavenly Army that surrounded the physical enemy that had surrounded Elisha when angels are uh when they when they become visible they often are mistaken as human beings in Mark chapter 16 in verse 5 when the after jesus' Resurrection when the women entered the tomb they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side and they were alarmed there are times in the Bible where angels have wings and are are creatures with the wing creatures and at times they they shine with a bright light and Brilliance of light and often times angels are intimidating uh intimidating creatures or or these Heavenly beings and so when they reveal themselves to to the people often times they say Don't Be Afraid don't be alarmed Don't Be Afraid angels are incredible beings they have great power and great ability and so the writer of Hebrews wants us to know that yes angels are great they have this great power they they their power is is is incredible what they can do is incredible but nothing it pales in com it all pales in comparison to the power and the greatness of Jesus and so the author of Hebrews says don't lose focus don't shift your focus off of Jesus and to look onto something of of lesser value and an importance that the angels are great they can do great things but Jesus is still more powerful Jesus is the ultimate source Jesus is the ultimate power Jesus is better and so don't lose focus don't be distracted by uh by other powers and by yeah they they they served that at God's command and they're and they great beings that God created but don't lose sight and and focus on the wrong thing Jesus is better and so five ways the text gives us that Jesus is better than the angels and the first one in verse four says that Jesus has a better name it says Jesus became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to th to theirs for to which of the Angels did God ever say you are my son and today I have become your father or again I will be his father and he will be my son Bible tells us that Jesus is superior because his name is superior to theirs Jesus is superior because of the name that he has been given there are times in the Bible where angels are called the the sons of God but there but no angel no specific Angel No Angel was ever called the Son of God only Jesus has been given the name the son only Jesus has been given that title and and from all eternity with no beginning and and no end Jesus will always have the name son for referring to Jesus and talking about Jesus God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son Jesus is the only one to possess the name and inherit the name as son in in Romans chap 1 and verse 4 the Apostle Paul says that Jesus was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit he is Jesus Christ Our Lord it was Jesus that was crucified it was Jesus that was buried and it was by the power of the holy spirit that Jesus was raised to life again on the third day no other person was able to do that no other Angelic being could do what Jesus did so Jesus was shown to be the Son of God by doing the things that he had done and by Rising again on the third day Jesus has always been God's son he will always be God's son Jesus has always eternally existed he Jesus was never a created being Jesus has always existed with God the Father the second Jesus the second person of the godhead the Trinity he's the exact representation of God the father Jesus he has inherited a better name than the angels in verse six we see that Angels worship Jesus so not only does Jesus have a better name he is worshiped by the Angels in verse 6 it says when God brings his firstborn into the world he says let all God's angels worship him so when we talk about firstborn that that that that word can be Mis uh mistranslated to and and someone you could you could take that to mean one that was born the first the first born in the family the first child of a of a a parents uh uh the firstborn chronologically the oldest child but in when we talk about the firstborn the Hebrews understood the firstborn to be a position uh to be a position and not of of chronological order and so Jesus as the first born refers to his Supremacy over creation he is over all things and so as the Eternal God over all creation Jesus is to be worshiped by the Angels Jesus is over all things he's Superior to all things and so the angels are to worship Him Jesus was worshiped by the Angels at his birth when he came in into this world at his Incarnation when he clothed himself in flesh and and and and came to dwell Among Us when he stepped out of Eternity coming into our world in Luke 2: 13 and 14 suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel praising God and saying glory to God in the highest heaven and une Earth peace to those on whom his favor rest not only is Jesus worshiped by the Angels at his birth but Jesus is worshiped right now today in the present again in Revelation 5 John said that look I heard the voices of many angels thousands upon thousands and 10 thousands times 10 thousand they encircle the throne the living creatures and the elders and in a loud voice they're saying Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise the angels surround the Throne of God in this moment today in the present and they worship the lamb who was slain the one who who came and surrendered his life upon the cross sacrificing his life for us and so he is worshiped by the Angels so not only does Jesus have a better name not only is he worshiped by the Angels but he he has a superior status in speaking in verse 7 it says in speaking of the Angels he says he makes the an his Angel spirits and his servants flames of fire but about the sun he says your throne oh God will last forever and ever a skor of of Justice will be the SE the skep of your kingdom angels are servants angels are servants but Jesus Jesus is Sovereign Angels who work worship Jesus and and are his servants Angels may be able to do spectacular things and but all that they do they do at God's bidding they may able they may they may be able to take on the forms of men they may take the shape of wing creatures they may appear as flames of fire they may do extraordinary things and have have this great power they may be able to do things beyond our imagination they may they may be able to blow our mind with what they are able to do but they still remain Jesus servants they serve God and they do his bidding they do what God instructs they are not God's equal they they they they are not one with God it is Jesus who sits on the throne it's Jesus who Reigns Supreme and Jesus his kingdom is an everlasting Kingdom the Bible says that his Rule and his reign will never end not only is there Jesus status higher he has a superior existence in verses 10- 12 he also says in the beginning Lord you laid the foundations of the Earth the heavens are the works of your hands they will perish but you remain they will all wear out like a garment you will roll them up like a robe like a garment they will be changed but you remain the same and your years will never end Jesus has a superior existence things will come and go upon this Earth things will perish but Jesus remains this world will shift it will fall apart but Jesus Remains the Bible says that he is the same yesterday today and forever he he doesn't change like shifting Shadows he is our unchanging God he is eternal with no beginning and no end and he never changes he has a superior existence he sits on a throne he he doesn't uh the found he laid the foundations of the earth he is before all things and and as the as as Colossians says in him all things are held together in Psalm 90:2 before the mountains were born you gave birth to the earth and the world from beginning to end you our God and finally the fifth thing Jesus is superior because because he rules over all things verses 13 and 14 of of Hebrews chapter 1 to which of the Angels did God ever say sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a foot stol for your feet the answer to that question is no one God has never given has never said that to anyone other than to Jesus to which of the to which of the Angels did God ever say sit at my right hand he never has instructed an angel to sit at his right hand but that that seat belongs to Jesus and Jesus alone Jesus has absolute rulership when he says that to I make your enemies a foot stol for your feet it was customary for a defeated King to prostrate himself and kiss his conqueror's feet and and so then the Victor would then place his feet upon the defeated King's neck and causing him to to be his to become his foot stol and so Jesus sits at the right hand of God the father and it says until he makes his enemies a foot stool for his feet Jesus is the one who sits at the right hand of the father who rules and Reigns over all things and so all people every nation every tribe every tongue all people will bow before Jesus one day because Jesus sits on the throne you can ignore Jesus now you can throw uh put him in a closet you can live your life without him you can ignore the fact that U you can ignore the gospel message you and reject anything having to do with Jesus you may say and believe that there is another path another way to heaven another way to be made right with God but a day is coming when the Bible says that all people will bow before him will bow before Jesus and confess that he is Lord of all Philippians 2: 10- 11 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on Earth and under the Earth and every tongue acknowledg that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the father Jesus sits on the throne and all people whether they realize it or not will acknowledge him as a lord one day all people will stand before him they will bow before him and confess that he is Lord over all if I could have the worship team uh come back up please the author of Hebrews wants us to know that as great as the angels are as powerful as they are as magnificent as they are and their Splendor and and as as these Heavenly uh beings that are used to do Great and Mighty things that God dispatches to uh to to do his will Jesus is still better he's more powerful he's more awesome than than anything that the Angels could ever do the multitude of angels that gather around the Throne of God they they worship Jesus Jesus is far superior far better than than any Heavenly being and that that that that that exists Jesus is the only one who rules and Reigns over all things not any other being not any other uh Heavenly uh host is Jesus who is on the throne he is the one who will be the judge and and is the ruler over all things the only one who has all power knowledge auth Authority whose greatness no one can comprehend it's Jesus who stepped out of Heaven that came into this world that clothed himself in flesh that The God Who dwelt Among Us and and wants to have relationship with us it's Jesus who died on the cross who took your sins and mine who who who hung on the cross and and and and carried our sins and and paid the price that no one else could ever pay it was Jesus and no one else who who did these things Jesus our all powerful God he made his dwelling with us and not only that he wants to have relationship with us today Jesus who is worshiped by the Angels the heavens and the Earth uh everything in creation adores him and worships him and and and Bows before him but Jesus wants to have a relationship with us he wants to dwell Within in us he wants to place his Spirit within us he wants to make us a new creation he wants to call us Sons and Daughters of God he wants to change us and and make us right with God he wants to he wants to have again be in relationship with us angels have great power but the power of Jesus is greater whatever you believe to be strong and powerful maybe it's a person maybe it's technology or science ience uh Jesus is greater whatever you look to and say that is a powerful thing and and I stand in awe and amazement at at this at this power Jesus is greater there is no power greater than him because of Jesus everything exists Jesus is the author the creator of all things no one is above him no one is equal to him Jesus is better if you would bow your heads and close your eyes with me those online if you would as well this morning maybe you've never placed your faith in Jesus you've looked other things and other powers other sources you've you've been uh you've been distracted by uh things of lesser value and importance and you say well look at the angels look how powerful they are look at look at this and how great this is or this religion and how how great that God looks Jesus is the only one who is over all things Jesus is more powerful than any other any other uh any other thing or any other he any Heavenly being or host Jesus is far greater and better than anything you could ever imagine and he wants to have a relationship with you he wants you to he wants to live within you he wants to change you he wants to make you a new creation if you've never asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins if you've never uh placed your faith in him trusting in his work that he did upon the cross if you've never said Jesus I'm a sinner and I confess my sins you can do that today by simply praying Jesus I'm a sinner I acknowledge that I've sinned I acknowledge that I I I have I I've lived my life apart from you but today Jesus I want to live for you I want to place my faith in you and my trust in you Jesus today I Repent of my sins I ask you to forgive me come into my life and be my savior be my Lord today I receive your free gift of Salvation I trust that you died on the that you went to the Cross you died upon the cross you took my sin upon the cross and you paid the price so that I could be free you paid the price for my Ransom so that I would have to face God's Eternal judgment and God's Eternal wrath help me Jesus to live for you today in every day going forward I place my faith and my trust in you have you prayed that prayer today let someone Christ father this morning we thank you for your word and for this again the simple truth that Jesus is better that there is no power greater there is no one there's no Heavenly being greater that that you Jesus and you alone you Reign Over All Things over all uh you sit on the throne this morning that that the angels that that as great as they are they worship you they gather around the throne they sing your Praises that they they worship you night and day and God we thank you there is no one greater this morning than Jesus no one will ever be greater we thank you Lord for for who you are we thank you that we can call you our savior our Lord our King we thank you that we can call upon you and you hear and you answer us we thank you Jesus that as as awesome as you are that that you live and you want to live within us you want to have relationship with us help us to recognize this morning that you are greater that you are better than anything we could ever uh achieve anything we could ever own anything we could ever have thank you Jesus for your word this morning we're going to sing this song of course uh and as we do uh if we could stand if you need prayer please feel free to come serve other gods and say this is the way or that's the way but there is only one king of King and one Lord of lords and his name is Jesus hallelujah thank you Lord Jesus for what you've done father we just pray pray for those here in our congregation I know there are those here that need a healing touch that need recovery Lord Jesus I know that those are watching online that need a healing touch and Recovery Lord Jesus father we just pray for healing for them Lord Jesus because you died on that cross for us you bore those stripes for our healing Lord Jesus so we believe this because we're are
