WVU's Garrett Greene Penn State Week 2024

okay next up we have quarterback Garrett green questions for Garrett Greg so Garrett just start with uh what this week is light for you we talk some to Eddie about anxiety your last college season do you have that this week how do you control it uh not really um I think anxiety only comes you know when you're not prepared um I think we've done a good job this whole week of preparing well um and hopefully that that continues to to later on in the week last year's game new defensive coordinator since then so things change a lot for them when you watch I mean you can't watch film because they haven't played a true game yet so what do you know of their defense what do you what do you look for in the Scout um yeah you know I think their their defense really starts with with their their two-edge rushers um you know I think number 11 number 33 are are really really good players they're super talented they're long they get off the ball fast um and then on the back end they have some transfers from big big schools like Florida and Georgia um who who are great in coverage um and then they have they moved to safety down to Nickel uh number one who who's a really really good player um so they have talent everywhere but you know for us it's just about ex executing back to the game last year what were some of the things you thought you do well what were some of the things you you're like I'm a lot better than I was at first game yeah I think just just pocket presence um you know just watch the tape back from last year uh was super skittish in the pocket didn't trust didn't trust the guys in front of him me um and I think that's something that you know as as I played more in the season and you know as the season progressed you know I got better at um but also I think we're a better football team than than last year um you know I think the offense kind of got rolling toward towards the middle of the year um and I I don't think we had that um opening up last year playing in a big atmosphere like this is going to be what's that like as a quarterback how do you keep your emotions in check when you're playing in front of such a large crowd yeah I think the honestly the buildups probably harder than than anything um because you know once you're out there it's just like it's just like the the same game I was playing at child's High School um you know so obviously the people are a lot better and a lot bigger and a lot faster um but you know it's really the the buildup that that is the most most stressful you know having to do having to do all these things because it is a really big game and you know people people are excited for it dad watching so they I think they have a night game um I don't know where I think he may be in Cincy um but they yeah he'll have it he'll have it on the uh in in the clubhouse yep what have you noticed in terms of the the mentality the vibe and things like that entering this game that's different than last year and I'm talking about the players especially the ones that played in the game last year because you have that experience yeah I think I think just you know having having a year on under our belt you know especially offense like we have so many people returning uh obviously we lost two two key pieces um last year but you know as an offense you know having everyone everyone basically returned um is a huge confidence booster for us um and you know now it's just about you know going to play what do you guys think he did well against them last year offensively um I I think we handled the environment well um I don't think that the offense was you know as as good as it should have been um but I think that you know that that's one of the best environments uh in all of sports uh playing there as a night game um and I think our guys did a really good job of you know handling that environment handling the emotions of that game did you watch the uh Flor State game yeah yeah I did uh it's kind of a strange question I guess uh geia Tech uh offense reminded me I think a lot of what you guys are same kind of quarterback and and and run first and win up front and win physically uh is that the do you feel like you're riding the wave of the future right now with the with the offense you're running in this um I mean I think that's think that's hard to say um you know I I just look look forward to to executing what we do as an offense so you know what whatever it takes takes to win um you know that that's what I look forward to doing you live in that town what were your takeaways um obviously Georgia Tech was the underdog they won the game what were some of the things you saw in that game they're like yeah we might be able to do this Saturday yeah so actually the the only guy that that I played with uh or played against in high school uh was the corner number three for Georgia Tech Amari Harvey um and he he had a pretty good game um so it was cool watching was cool watching a guy from Tallahassee uh you know make make plays against against his hometown team um but it was it was a great game you know I enjoyed watching it um especially over in Ireland I know a lot of my buddies who who went to school there they were over there for it um but you know I mean it doesn't have any effect on on what we do here what what has to happen in upsets what does a team have to do to be able to beat up so-called Blue Blood yeah I think just just overall execution um you know I know Georgia Tech they they kind of escape two bullets um with you know the the miss snap on on like the last Drive of the game and then I think the second last Drive or the third to last Drive they they had a they had a fumble with the quarterback and running back mesh point so they really they really dodged two bullets there um but I think it's just all about executing and you know do doing what you do at a high level carryover with with within your team from that late touchdown last year uh not really um you know we're just looking forward to to this year um you know we have we have a really good team and they have a really good team so I'm looking forward to it was it an discussion after that game or among you guys mean fans yeah fans were infuriated a little bit um I mean not really I think that just after the game we were more more pissed off about you know what what we didn't do as an offense to to score enough points um like the the third down right right after halftime um like there were a ton of key plays in there that you know if if we convert or or do something the game looks a lot different so the the one play at the end of the game doesn't really doesn't really affect us some point you get tired of just preparation practice I want to get out there and play yeah I think I think you can talk to the to the offensive line defensive line they they've been they've been going against each other for the last three weeks so I think it it'll be fun and you know it'll be exciting to to to play play somebody else you say this is the best team West Virginia what makes you what leads you to believe that yeah I think just just overall chemistry um I I think the the guys in the locker room are really really close uh I think they they truly do care about each other um and then if you look at just offensive production from from last year you know we returned a ton of ton of protection or production both you know in the Run game and the pass game um and then you know our offensive line we we have a ton of ton of guys we played a lot of football um so I'm looking forward to to play with those guys and you know getting this thing kicked off on on Saturday gar um I think you've answered a question about their defensive coordinator being new they have a new offensive coordinator so new new new um you've talked about you bring a whole lot back on offense it doesn't sound like it's going to be the same offense that people saw um maybe kind of final third of the season on with some additions don't give away the tips here I guess but like how much different better more diverse I don't know what everyone want to say offensively do you think you are yeah I think we're I think as an offense were able to you know throw the ball in early Downs more um I think Coach Brown has more confidence in you know me and the wide outs and you know the the offensive line protection wise uh I think that we we have more confidence in that um but we're going to do what we were what we're good at um and and that's running the football and you know taking shots down field would it be fair to say that it's not that you're better at what you're good at but maybe there's more things you feel like you're good at nowadays yeah I think I think like this offseason was really kind of um important to to continue to get better at what we were good at last year um and that was running the football but then also kind of the things that we weren't so good at you know getting those better to where we can feel like th those are all a strength I'm sure you got tired of being asked about accuracy level but you admitted that was the focus so do you feel like you've improved greatly in that area yeah I think you know uh the the statistics through through fall Camp showed that that I improved it from from this fall Camp to last fall Camp um so I just look forward to to doing it on Saturday on on Saturday game's about to about to begin you're standing in the tunnel there waiting to come out onto the field what kind of things are going through your mind and what kind of anxiety is there uh at that moment um you know I think I think like you'd be you'd be crazy to not have butterflies you know going out into that environment um but you know I think I think a lot of the calming of my anxiety um over really over the last two years has gone back to my faith that you know I mean no no matter what what really happens out there you know Jesus is still going to love me my family is still going to love me U and and that that allows me to go to go play really free and you know really easy those butterflies you talk about is it almost easier to get rid of them in a day game where you just kind of wake up and you go for a no kickoff versus a night game where you got of sit around all day and waiting and waiting and waiting yeah it's definitely different um I think you know playing playing up there last year at 7 o' you know you're kind of you go through your walkthroughs in the morning then you have a big block of time in the middle of the day that you're kind of just watching game day or watching other college football games so you definitely have more time to think about it um but I think whenever you get to two three hours before the game no no matter if we kicked off at 9:00 a.m. you know those those feelings and those butterflies are still going to be the same you a good sleeper the night before yeah yeah yeah I I try my best um you know we're big on the on the AA ring so you know I I was in a self competition to to have good scores um so I I try to not try to not you know go to sleep too early or go to sleep too late I was say they monitor you now you say well I slept while they can go look at watch and say yeah no you didn't sleep yeah so you know Co coach Mike definitely has has a choke hold on the sleep for sure you get a lot questions about your dad your mom I know is she at every game how many did how many has she missed um she hasn't missed a lot you know especially since I since I really started playing um you know my my my reted freshman year I think she came to all the home games but you know I think she I think she missed a few away games but because I told her I was like listen I don't want you have to buy a flight just to watch me you know on the sidelines um but no my my Mother's Day present to her this year was you know taking care of all our travel to to all the way games uh cuz I think it's super important that you know she's been my rock through through everything her and my dad um you know they've been there through it all so I think it's important that you know hopefully my dad misses a lot of games because that means that they're that they're playing well in the playoffs um but I think I think it's important that that that she's there as much as she can be and then you know hopefully you know in November when the World Series is over you know my dad will be at every game first class tickets going coach or how's that work no comment um you know I'm gonna look at flights uh and you know if if it's $50 more for a first class you know I I'll I'll hook her up for a second you kind of made a joke about the first couple of years um did she want to come to games and see you on the sideline was she like that type of mom was she here for those games yeah no she was she definitely wanted to she definitely wanted to be here um because you know obviously like the F first few years um you know it's my first time really not playing you know in my whole life um so she she wanted to be up here up here at every every chance she could um you know on away games there's not much time that you know we could spend together because it's it's the hotel the night before you play the game and then you're on a flight out you know right after the game so you know I didn't feel like it was efficient enough for for her to come out so I can see her for you know 30 minutes but every home game when we really had time to to hang out and see each other um she she made it a point to to come to all those yeah this is obviously a home game first time Penn State's been back here in well over three decades any quick message of the fans to to kind of help you guys out with with this one yeah not really um you know I think I think the fans the F fans are already really excited um you know I know the blue light will be be rocking and rolling before I wake up um so I'm I'm looking forward to to being out there um and you know play in that environment okay thank you very much thank you thank you guys
