commissioner of the Jamaica fire brigade Stewart Beckford says based on preliminary assessment a gas leak is to be blamed for the explosion at fast food restaurant Burger King in New Kingston on Wednesday six employees were injured in the blast that occurred sometime around 10:30 a.m. the explosion shattered the windows and doors off the Building Commissioner Beckford explained that employees who reported for work on Wednesday morning alerted the company's gas supplier about a possible gas leak he says checks were made and workers were given the all clear however 10 minutes later there was a massive explosion st came in to work they discovered that there was uh gas leak or gas leaking and so they called in the supplier to come and look at the um the the cylinder uh the supplier came in recognized that there was a defective regulator that was changed the staff were given the green light to resume their activities they went back into the store and of course resume their activities 10 minutes subsequent to that there was a massive explosion it is our belief that the explosion was due to a built up of gas in the environment mixed with ambient a and of course some naked Flames would have been brought in in terms of the lighting of a stove and that would have triggered the explosion that we saw here it's really unfortunate because there is always a protocol to be observed the staff did what they needed to have done uh based on the information we have from the the um the proprietor of the store
