if you're watching on YouTube right now live welcome um wow what a roller coaster of a game I just be you J Jay Jay Jay had a really hard time tonight it was his voice is not okay either I don't see us are we not live uh no it's live guys I can see ourselves oh sweet so not I just before we get into this and we talk about everything I was I I thought I could play maybe a clip or two if yall are okay with that a clip or two from our last episode when we were talking about our expectations go for it and they were spot on right yeah so you won't see any video you can just listen here's the audio here hopefully this works this is going to be a really good litmus test for a lot of different position groups for our team because the areas that we struggle in here are going to be the areas that we get taken advantage of against in power force so this will this will really identify this week and next week will really identify any problem areas that we have I mean we should you know if we have a position grou destroying that doesn't necessarily indicate anything but we will know if we're struggling somewhere so this is really good for us yeah and I think it's not good for us hopefully we early and Preston Stone leaves the game early and get Str I think really the difference I think we're there with our first string is really in the ACC what I'm questioning is do we have the depth to compete and so can we continue to dominate this is going to be a really what do you guys think we kind of touched on this a little bit what do you think is the biggest thing we hope to see in game one I know we talked about no injuries um do we hope to see a wide receiver break out May get kicked out of the game shut out by the defense maybe yeah what is what is one thing we each kind of will take away after game one I kind of I kind of mentioned this earlier I really want to see domination of the line of scrimmage I feel good about that guys on offense that's going to mean is that we're going to have a lot of rushing yards most likely um and you know we'll see running backs do really well but that running backs doing really well won't surprise me too much going against Nevada or Houston Christian but really just knowing that our line is just creating massive you know Red Sea you know splitting the Red Sea type gaps like that's what I want to see and then on defense just seeing like you know our defensive ends just you know just rush past them or just put power through I watch put on the back so those are really they get the quack much they put guys on the back a lot of pressure how I'm going to feel about the rest of the season yeah yeah I think a shout out would do it for me uh I want see defense Dom that was I think we're gonna get into some games some pretty good offenses later on in the season and so if we can dominate when we should then I I think that would be that's what I'm looking for the defens side of the ball still looking for it mhm you know where where we left off last season yeah I'm just pumped I just want to see a show like I just want to have fun you know no it was a show it was a show the what do you guys think we kind of touch on this a little bit what do you on date night with my yeah I was on Daye night with my wife um anyways yeah let's let's get into this first of all oh my gosh large side of relief right absolutely we won yeah I mean said back in high school he said a win is a win um you know you don't always feel good about him but sometimes you just have to fight through all the muck and get to the end and just get better like sometimes ask how they ask how many yeah in a year from now nobody's gonna care about how we won they're just going to want to know if if we won so there is something to be said about that yeah um LK 1202 said R RJ Maryland is a glitch I think he was the biggest positive of today right easily uh are Maryland in the second half I mean he I think we can all consensus agree that he was the Mustang mood player of the game um I think so possibly you guys feel that way easily yeah RJ here's your trophy RJ yep you get the virtual trophy off game week zero yep but also want to also want to give a shout out though to brashard Smith because without him we wouldn't have been in the game he had some really key moments in the game keeping us within Striking Distance for RJ to come in at the end and actually come in clutch and win the game so shout out to bashard he was a runner up um yeah but yeah it goes to RJ Maryland I mean that was just super clutch all right I'm I'm still sweating like right now I'm like like I can barely believe if you can't see I can see the sweat glistening on his on his forehead that was tough this was yeah not tough in a good way what a day I think a day I think there's a lot to be said today I think I'm very glad we have this on video we're gonna you know we're gonna watch the film next week hopefully improve we got to do better against Houston Christian but um yes thank you Lord Jesus yes thank you for getting now this is um it has I was telling yanic about this during the game but um Louisiana Tech 20121 comes to mind the Hail Mary game right before we went to to TCU um just very glad we survived and we're moving on so yeah I think a W's a w yeah definitely W's we're glad to get the win but y'all who are watching in the comments let us know what you think but I was really really unhappy with um the coaching performance especially in the first half I did not like what that we were doing with the two quarterbacks I thought it just didn't let Preston Stone get into a rhythm he looked like a quarterback who's taken half the Reps all off season which we talked about on the last episode that it just didn't make sense why we were letting this go on and then it's like and then in the game it's like two two drives two drives two drives and then Preston and I mean I thought it should have been Preston the whole way he needs to get into a rhythm I thought the coaching didn't help him get into a rhythm yeah he's been Rusty he missed a lot of the off season you just got to let him play through it and I think that taking him out did not help him I just it was confusing man I just I really didn't understand that um and I was just really disappointed in in the game plan there yeah um a lot to be said I think as we go since this is our first like real live like postgame podcast we can respond to comments as they come in um okay okay you asked if Preston's Heisman campaign is over I'd say it's technically not over it's a combined Heisman actually it's a they're you know uh Jennings and stone are running for Heisman together together yeah well if they if they were that maybe it be a little different but I'll say it's not over but for he would really have to start having some Stellar games soon we'll just say that because the start of that the start of the game I mean he had a pick he had three really close like near picks um you have to do a lot to impress the Heisman committee I mean the committee that picks the Heisman and so it's just it it'd be tough I'll just say that he would need to really turn turn it on to do it so just yeah and I will say those two throws third and two um at our own what was it like six or seven and then the third and seven on the touchdown were just awesome I mean if we don't have either of those we don't win the game um he turned it on when he needed to appreciate he came in clutch yeah I appreciate that um Jay says uh he's glad he won we won because going to the office on Monday would have been social suicide after telling every second I was like this sounds like RJ too so just the letter J after he told every we were going to The Natty this year we're still going to the Natty baby we're 1 and0 we're second a path yeah are we second in the ACC or first we're second ex technically we're second in the ACC we're on track well I think they have conf is that how did that happen is that because has conf that's because there's there's only been three teams that have played one lost two one Florida State play Georgia Tech Georgia Tech wins we're on track to go to Charlotte is it Charlotte yeah yeah y Florida state is the only team in ACC history to have sole possession of 17th Place that's right that's a fact in the conference nobody has ever been hey but but they're too good for the ACC right they need to be in the they really should sue to get out of this conference let's we let's focus on us right now guys because this was I think we have a lot to talk about for us we should be sing as well because I think you know there's obviously there's a lot of areas of concern we had a couple area we we actually did have a couple areas where we actually did really well in um I have three areas but the biggest the biggest concern that I think I have even Beyond like a particular position group was was just the penalties we had 11 penalties for 125 yards which is absolutely ludicrous I mean we had a player ejected for spitting um which is questionable of whether or not it actually happened we there is no footage by the way we tried looking it up after the game there is actually no footage the lovely uh camera crew that was working the game that'll yeah we we'll talk about that in our list of uh wasn't yeah it wasn't great we we'll talk about that but yeah there was but there was a lot of stuff I we had just penalty after penalty lots of pass interferences which reflects poorly on the coaches we weren't ready for the game we weren't disciplined there was a fight that broke out earlier right in front of a ref which had no need for it Jord Hudson needs to run and run a lot that was awful yeah yeah just like I don't care what a player says to you it's the first game of the season any game it doesn't matter but first game of the season it's a non-conference game like just turn around and walk away like you don't need to slap the guy in the face yeah and if you're going to hit him like your fist right and don't hit a helmet I've never why are you trying to box sucker punch him in the stomach or something in a football game your your fist is going to lose to that yeah it's just it just doesn't make any sense it's yeah I I don't know okay so discipline get into it discipline was discipline I think should needed to be the first thing that we talked about just because there was some uncomely like stuff about our team that really isn't what SMU football is and we really are a more disciplined team like we really are I mean we were more disciplined last year for sure than this game showed and so for sure we that's above all else that needs to change because if that changes then you're going to start see Improvement in a lot of these other areas that are position group areas of concern that we can go through yeah yeah well do we just want to run through some areas of concern and then we can kind of move on to the more positive stuff get it out the way let's just get it out of the way and then we can talk about some of the POS yeah I think I think I'll go with special teams um we didn't look great last year I mean a missed field goal terrible snap on a punt um bad bad a bad job from most of the time from our punt return team we couldn't block um what was the thing I was going to say we fumbled that punt I well you didn't fumbled the punt with the Long Snapper threw it over I and so that was right oh and then the timeout and special teams on the punt fourth and 30 just like just not we just don't look like a well coached team right now and and again like we'll give some Grace like it is week zero you know we were very we clearly were overconfident and didn't feel like we had to really show up and this could be a good thing a wake up call but yeah the special teams was a disaster today keep in mind also yeah like only four I think it's only four FBS teams actually have to play this week everyone else gets an extra week of preparation to kind of clean up these kind of things so yeah well I don't know if I say extra week because we started a week early so really we had the same amount of prep as everyone else what I'm saying is they have an extra week before they start their season and so they have an extra week to to you know dot the eyes cross the teas before they play their first game but we started Camp early so I'm just saying like we had the same I real we Camp early that's my bad guys ignore that um we couldn't run the ball we didn't really try at a large period of this of the third quarter we did we just completely gave up on the run which I I mean it ended up working I guess you could say but I I thought the offensive line was not very good today I don't think we played very well I mean maybe in the fourth quarter I guess we did what we needed to do but um which I think to be fair there's been a lot of injuries a lot of of mixing around so I I think that's still a work in progress um the announcers were were terrible but we were expecting that yeah we were expecting that the amount of times we just had to mute the TV because we just couldn't stand yeah yeah we do that sometimes and who who wanted to talk about the who wants to leave the announce the camera work it was so bad oh it was so bad what you guys well okay first off Ben was complaining about it and I'm like uh whatever but then when we kicked to the field goal and and they zoomed out yeah to get further away you couldn't even see from the field goal that we were kicking into and then instead of zooming into the field goal we're kicking into look at this action right yeah there were a lot of kick returns where they wouldn't even pan to the guy catching it they would just show the middle of the field as the ball flies out of view yeah well in like um I think NADA was about to punt and they just had the camera right on the line of scrimmage and you couldn't see yeah you couldn't see the punter this is why we need the CW more comp because CBS Sports Network is Absolut terrible trash I was I was surprised do you guys think that there's any other industry where like the drop off from A to B I know I know this is probably their D team but like even then like drop off from A to B is always so like even if you watch ESPN 2 like the announcers that are good are so much better and so few the bad ones are just everywhere I feel like yeah cars I think there's Toyota and then everyone else that's kind that's a little bias no bias yeah yeah I don't think so I think you're pretty even within ESPN like yeah there's The A Team of ESPN and everyone else drops off pretty quick yeah yeah so yeah some other concerns that we had um you know we may have already talked about it but just like the secondary it it was kind of a struggle to watch that was the that's probably the biggest a lot of blown plays a lot of unnecessary penalties just penalties I think it's just undisciplined because they weren't really tested and they came up a couple of Chunk broken plays but I just wanted to say G Carson makes a good point smu's defense leads to the FBS in safeties that's George and G good George okay it's cuz I know another G Carson anyways our um yeah that's right and Jay actually predicted that we were gonna get a safety today go back and listen to our previous episode listen last episode Jak called I thought we were going to get a safety we did and we were putting those safety hands up like it was prayer of thanks I think there was prayer of thanks to go with the the safety exactly reality so yeah definitely but yeah I mean the to emphasize what Walker is saying yeah yeah secondary is secondary and special teams are the two biggest areas of concern for sure we also had um you know the linebackers were a big concern for me our D line which we'll get into serviceable definitely serviceable Beyond service they did really well the way they were collapsing on the quarterback was it was nice it lots of pressure there's lots of pressure on the quarterback but but their quarterback got a lot of runs off because as the pocket is collapsing he would slip up the middle which is then the linebacker's responsibility and they would there was a lot of arm tackling there was a lot of juked you know linebackers getting juked and so when just like guys diving diving getting diving jumped over like yeah juked it was not it wasn't pretty um so linebackers are definitely were a big area of concern and the problem is that's that you really don't want weak linebackers I will I will say I think the ERS were worse the like when when Alex Kilgore came in he's number 54 I thought he looked really good but like the starting linebackers I just didn't think we're playing so well um Rangers King brought up a good point he said play calling on offense was atrocious U yeah we kind of talked about it but did you sneak that one in there just that was that was Ben commenting no no no no that wasn't me no seriously I thought the play calling the play design there might have been a thing of where they're trying to be vanilla cuz they show stuff but like we it almost cost us so at some point it's like what's the point yeah yeah I I I was really disappointed in the offensive game plan the quarterback thing I already talked about it was just again abandoning the run it was just it was just weird everything just kind of fell off didn't it like there was no energy it was just weird yeah very much so strange yeah very I think I think I probably leaned more towards we were trying to kind of you know keep our cards close to our chest and not show too much I definitely think it almost cost us sure um and maybe we should have been you know a little more creative a little bit you know whatever but I mean there's there's truth to that especially on offense um but like on defense you don't it's I mean you really you're kind of reactionary in a lot of ways and so it's not that you're showing your cards by playing good defense you know contain spies on on the QB because the QB just kept doing designed runs why don't you have a spy on the QB he couldn't really throw like let's be honest yeah he wasn't really a threat there and so it's just we should have that's something that like the adjust like on defense you adjust to you're like all right we know the the QB is has a proclivity towards running the ball and just tucking like he fake he doesn't even fake the pass he wasn't even doing he's literally getting in just tucking it yeah and so you you spy the QB at that point to be fair though I mean they made they made the stop when it counted so yeah um you have to respect it yeah um I want to talk about the receiving a little bit Yeah but uh by the way Duce Haron there is a I want to give a shout out George George commented on Duce Harman he did Duce Haron did play well at quarterback when he came in he actually had some really good plays kind of picked up the secondary we had several times where he without him like we actually probably would have lost the game because he made some clutch plays so yeah for sure three tackles there for Deuce yeah I want to go over um receiving yards I'm gonna let yall take a guess at how many how many catches they had and how involved they were uh let's start with Jordan Hudson how involved was he guy we really praised on last week got involved early but uh not the way we wanted did he have one catch one catch for 10 yards yeah to be fair he was pulled out early because of the the slap and so he actually missed a good portion of the first half because of that rightly so how about brashard Smith guy that we thought very highly of um well no no he's he was running the ball a lot yeah yeah but how many receptions he have I like two or three I think yeah two for 26 yards that's hey that's solid for a running back Jaylen n actually the ex same two for 26 had a huge one to convert on a third and long that was clutch nine did have a really that was clut play I recall correctly he was otherwise didn't play great but all right so those are our guys with two um we have one guy at Three Roger Daniels Jr three for 28 and then we have one guy who caught eight balls today and he's our player of the game yeah Mustang mood player of the game day Maryland yeah eight defitely eight receptions for 162 yards average 20 yards the second half all in the second half didn't have a single catch on the first that was a lot of that was QB play though to be fair yeah one touchdown and a 49 yard long for him yeah which means if you take out the outlier he still had seven catches for 110 plus yards that's still really good if you even if you take out his big big play no that's I mean that's a good game and he did all that in the second half I mean he's there's a good chance um that RJ Maryland is the best tight end in Texas I mean he's better I don't think uh UT has frankly an incredible tight in room A&M doesn't have an incredible tight end room and so who else are you talking about like TCU doesn't have a great tight ends and so like this is SMU probably has RJ Maryland probably is the best tight end in Texas right now yeah so and I think it's actually a pretty safe one to say one thing I'm bummed to say about it receiving is U Jake Bailey was held off the uh the box score today yeah no catches for no yards um but for the show Isaac uh Pearson was not let off the left off the scorecard today in the rushing Department had one carry forga 13 yards and wasn't his fault he got screwed yeah yeah that snap went over his head and he had to chase it down and then he got I saw him tried he tried to almost got it off he almost got it off but then that guy ran right in front of him I can't hit on my boy Isaac he he did have three kicks for 122 yards so he he punted pretty well yeah not excellent not like there were some times where we thought he could have put a little more yeah it seemed like he was going for the air time almost maybe um yeah sacrifices some yards but I mean I'm no football strategist on that last one for sure for sure but I feel like just just get it bounce into the one yard line I feel like his first one was really good yeah and it is the second one he got off was good yeah um pruna ma Tai made a good point he said fourth and thir timeout was because they were two number eights on the field oh interesting uh so would that would that have been a 5 yard penalty or maybe peruna might I don't know it wasn't fourth and three that was fourth and 30 sorry I I must have misspoke two eights on the field I think it probably would have been five yards yeah I I still think you take the penalty but legal form I don't know who they but it didn't cost us which is good do you know what that you know what the penalty for that is we we'll wait for you to the other number eight was CU you know obviously I know Hudson but I don't actually know who our other number eight I let's see how fast my tai can uh respond with the St for I also want to say we did um we also didn't give a shout out to Jonathan McGill he made a really good good um play on what was it the he had a few good plays second to last drive he had a really big uh pass breakup he had some good tackles second to last dri Jonathan Mig Migel yeah he had a good he did have a couple good plays um and then let's I mean just just to be frank on the QBs yeah so so what do you what do you all think about how we started the game to you don't want to know what I think about that two possessions you don't want to know what I think no I want to we really want we really want to know we want to know things that's what we do want to know I think Preston Stone started awful and did it made sense right with everything leading up to that you know hey we have quarterbacks sorry we missed it I'm sorry peruna he already said it he said it right after he said it would be an instant first for Nevada oh yeah okay good call good job sorry sorry we Sorry weed you we we bungled that thanks George for letting us know cuz George let us know that he already said I don't know what else we don't know anything about football I I've never heard of two number I mean I know you can because it's offense defense but I've never heard about that yeah Jordan Hudson and Justin Medlock from Utah there gotcha number eight linebacker okay dang would have been an auto first down okay sorry rat I shouldn't have said that I did see him yelling at yeah Ben Ben was saying some mean stuff we're watching the game when that happened I don't know I wasn't that mean I said some bad stuff too that was so bad that there was some heated heated moments accepted the 5-year-old penalty then wasted a Time out and then we ended up closer to the end yeah yeah well turns out it wasn't a wasted timeout so I mean it was because it was an error we didn't need it forced error and just had the ball that just goes back to the discipline though like even though it wasn't a penalty at that point because we called the timeout that's just another waste okay we're jumping around a lot I want to go back to quarterbacks like it seemed like it was their plan to go two for Preston two possessions for Preston two possessions for Kevin and then back to Preston and just figure it out from there it it seems like that was the plan before before the game started and the way it made it look was that they were pulling Preston out because he was doing bad but I don't think that was the case I think that would have been a great plan had we been up 14 nothing yeah no you're right and I think that's they expected that may be what they expected to be up you know 10 or 14 nothing and then oh you know pull Preston out let Kevin go and and if Kevin scores again then we can just keep Kevin in let him get reps or whatever but was it was it is it really that like were they really that close throughout Spring ball summer and fall camp that like we needed two quarters each to decide who's like the the starter like I don't I just it just seems like a silly way to do it uh but before we go there I just want to take some notes of two comments some guy he's probably a bot with no uh no profile picture Andrew Sneed said who true who had a more embarrassing game SMU or the CBS broadcast that's a that's a good one no close CBS had a worse game it's more embarrassing for them because we still actually ended with a dub it's a coin flip CBS yeah okay yeah fair enough we still ended up with a dub so we kind of salvaged some of it CBS just they ended in the L category and then and then Jay says he wished we would have seen more quarterback runs he said Preston looked like he was a little nervous um which I I would be I could see that yeah but he broke his FIB I mean that's pretty significant but yeah there was probably some nerves it seemed like he picked it up at the end where he was comfortable running the ball again yeah um yeah do you think do you think Preston why do you think Preston played poorly to start the game I mean he definitely made some bad decisions um but I will say he definitely started poorly but the way I see it is he's coming off an injury he missed part of um part of spring he didn't play in the spring game I think he got cleared right around the spring game if I remember correctly it was after but yeah he's going to he's going to be rusty um and like if if your quarterback struggling game one like that happens like you need to give him time to work him his way into the game let him get into a rhythm which never happened like he was playing terrible I agree but he has to work through that especially like let's not forget I mean this is his only second year starting like it's I mean he got experience last year but he's still relatively young in term of game experience and I think you just can't pull him and it's just even for Kevin like neither of them could get into a rhythm neither of them got all the Reps in the offseason they're splitting reps now they're splitting game reps it's just you just got to pick one and go with it like that's that's my opinion and I mean he came up clutch I think I don't think we'll see this again I mean we might see it against Houston Christian because you know well you never know I guess after this but I think we can't keep doing this that's all I'll say yeah and I think it it seemed like there were maybe some issues with him being able to hear play calls um it seemed like maybe had some issues too cuz both sides see him with their hands and it was not loud the ear holes yeah and Nevada stadium was maybe half full and it's not even a big St yeah and like what's it going to be like I mean definitely a away at some of these bigger teams but even even at home like when we get some big crowds when we get like f FSU or TCU there's going to be a big crowd yeah it's going to be loud and they need to figure out iag TCU fans will be louder than the Nevada fans oh well yeah yeah the the away TCU fans will be louder than the Nevada fans at home because that's but yeah they're goingon to have to figure something out with the with the mic headsets yeah it seemed like that was kind of an issue but yeah it's uh yeah Rangers King is on a heater right here he says I've been in and out but the culture was a disaster tonight if it doesn't repair itself a conversation about Rett has to be had I mean I think it's I think it's too early to say that there's a culture issue yet it's concerning though there's definitely like a cause for like what is going what what happened yeah something was wrong I don't know if I'm on board with the like fire R team I like I don't even think it should be in the discussion I was texting fire Rett in the second quarter as a joke yeah but that's yeah that's been I just I yeah I don't I don't think that needs to be a conversation or even be like thought of as could be a conversation did just get this email from SMU football Mustangs knockof Nevada exclamation point I don't no yeah it's this is nothing to celebrate this is not a celebr just like send email mean to donate to your ACC they can send an email but just say like Mustangs win you know like yeah I mean we won that's that's what it comes down to but there's nothing them yeah I would I wouldn't say we I wouldn't say we knocked them off I know they were going for the alliteration there but um what they could have said SMU Mustangs nearly beat Nevada you know like barely yeah if they wanted Deiter B the bot sne at SMU with the year's first Haw Tua [Laughter] injection yeah so sorry what does that mean don't worry about it J let's yeah let's keep so to sum up the Rett Lashley talk none of us are actually serious that we think he should get fired what we're saying is is the team was not prepared today it wasn't a great coaching job we don't think that's going to continue but there was some a s there I was concerned at the way the team looked they didn't look disciplined they didn't look prepared and so he has a lot of work he's got to own up to it he's got to own we haven't we haven't watched the press conference yet um I'm sure he'll own it and we'll be better next week like we have to yeah and I think to go back to the penalties that's a lot of just discipline it is aspect on our just the player side cuz I mean what were the stats yeah it's not just on the coach it's not just on the players it's on both yeah 11 for 125 yards 11 11 penalties for 125 yards with a timeout also wasted to prevent another penalty that would have gained an automatic first down 15 more yards commented um yeah yeah it's somebody commented earlier about how like what do you think that Rett say any of the players right now I mean gosh I don't I don't know what he's saying to the players it's definitely not going to be a pleasant conversation um you're right there is stuff like R has no you're fine it's just I was just going to agree with you in the sense that saying like yeah there's there's stuff that he has to take you know he has to be accountable for but I mean we have a team eight of our 11 defensive players are seniors are graduates that's something that is not all on the coach I mean if you're in your fourth or potentially fifth year as a graduate that's something that's not really acceptable and you really have to have learned this by now and so this it's a failing on the players as well so we have to we have to address this these guys should be mature players we should be able to address it and come into the into Houston Christian and be disciplined it's just we just got to address it now because that's the concerning thing for me is we hear the talk of you know SMU is like one of the oldest teams we are in the conference and with that age and with people that have been on the team for a while I would expect to see just more maturity less like stupid mistakes less holds less stuff like that um and it just I mean obviously that's opposite of what we saw so it's just like I don't know 15 of our 22 by the way 15 of our 22 total players offense and defense are seniors are graduates what's up Audrey what a lot yo we are live right now come and say hi what do you think about the game oh my she didn't want to have a you know what happened oh kind of get a wave to thank God you didn't watch it was it's probably it's probably good you didn't watch hey Macy how's it going no we barely won barely won barely won comeback Victory with uh some excitement why are we doing this just say hi just yeah yeah give us give us your thoughts on the game barely won you got to speak closer to the mic if we barely won yeah what are your thoughts that means that sounds like typical SMU to me we overestimate our abilities and then we barely scrape by we got to see think more realistically about oh no ability we did we did overestimate ourselves we did yeah you should probably edit this part out we'll keep it ined we're live yeah we can this is real we have like 11 12 people watching right watching Hannah's upates in Chicago seems fun enjoying it cool okay bye um so should we move on to like positive stuff yeah let's let's let's talk about some positives because there is there are three areas that I really am actually feeling good about I didn't think I would feel as good about it but I actually do feel good about these areas um yeah since I was talking about the whole game I do feel good about our D line we didn't have I don't think we had a sack in the game we had tackles for losses I don't think we had a sack in the game but part of that's due to the type of quarterback he was and he was just running the ball a lot um but yeah R dline was constantly pressuring the QB and so I felt good about them I think that they kind of manhandled the o line and so um yeah I actually I feel a lot better about our our lines I said this in the that was what I really wanted to see going into the game was how our offensive lines and defensive lines would do our D line impressed me our offensive line was serviceable and so I didn't feel terrible at the offens line there was mistakes but there were also some really good moments where we had some great runs good pass protection gave Preston Stone a lot of time yeah um he had a ton of time he had a ton of time and so which is a shame that he was rushing in the second half yeah he was he was rushing himself he didn't need to rush because he had so much time from the o line I I thought they were better in the second half than the first half oh yeah yeah no they were the first half they were they look spotty but it you know dline was great o line was serviceable um I'll let you guys talk about you know the other two areas if youall want um or I can keep going up to you no go for it um yeah well I guess the so second area running backs brashard Smith he looks like he's going to be our typical move the chains type of running back very impressed with him yeah he was our runner up for Mustang mood player yeah player of the game yeah he was um for sure he kept us in the game for a good portion of it um it was a great run by committee honestly I because the thing is we sometimes we look for all the running backs to do the same thing of just moving the chains but LJ is not meant for that and he they clear they brought him in just to punch in the touch the first touchdown and stuff like that so they were using for short down yardage he seems to do a good job at that solid two three four yard kind of guy when they know it's coming that's exactly you need a back like that so I felt good about both of them and then knon came in and just gave us some good P like uh short passes that turn into big yard plays and so that was just you know I feel good about N I feel really good about our running back room I think that we have you know a solid running back room I'm not going to say that they're the top three in the ACC but we have a solid running back room that we can rely on to do us well to do well for us Jack Robert said Shard Smith looked impressive yeah I I agree but I just don't I don't think the play calling helped the running back I we just didn't really run the ball very much in the in the second and third quarter so like if you look at the stats I mean it doesn't look like we did a great I I I agree with you that I feel decent about the the position group but um I don't know it's strange yeah I mean otherwise like RJ Maryland was a huge highlight I I we have anything else I think that's it for me I would say that I'm most excited for Smith um this season like like I knew that RJ could be this um yeah I'm most excited to see brashard Smith um kind of because he kind of came out of left field in the sense that he wasn't here right yeah and then he's here now and he's our best back in terms of one yeah I think that Rangers King brings up a good point we can probably talk about this later we'll see how the season goes we talked about bringing on a real OC to call plays um not that our current OC is not a real OC but I have seen with other teams where sometimes the coach handling the play calling is just a lot it's just too much it takes away from like game management I saw it with Brent venol Oklahoma um I've seen it with a couple other guys but I think the offense huh does Brett call the offense Brent Brent Bren v no he called the defense what I said the first time he called the defense but um they hired like a different DC this year who I think is going to call the place he's at least less had more of a CEO type rather than like I'm running the offense I know Cliff called the all the um offense for Tech but what about I mean Lincoln riy yeah yeah um and I think that's a conversation we can have at the end of the year we'll see how it goes I mean I don't think he's done a good job so far clearly um but it is a good question I think that that could be something we could look at as the year goes on um like does he need to be more of a CEO rather than so Hands-On on the offense we'll see which is hard because like I really enjoyed rett's play calling when he um was the OC for SMU under uh cloudy dyes um and I heard he did a really good job job at Miami too and so so it's like I know I know it's there and I also know that I know nothing about play calling but it I wasn't extremely impressed with tonight but like we said earlier it could have been because he was just trying to you know hide what they had going from the big team don't sell yourself short we know we know how to call plays when the play calling is bad right yeah it was bad so we know that we could have call better plays running on Third and five that was a weird one when you got when you got into a rhythm of of throw throw throw and then you run yeah yeah I I think well okay you finish well I guess my my question is with this just general performance is like what does it mean for us in the future like obviously Houston Christian not worried about that maybe after this one I say thank God we have Houston Christian to to fix some of these DET it's like a little buffer yeah but do you is it do is this something we can recover from is this something we're going to learn from and be able to like be a different because we have to be a different team I think another thing I said last week is that we're not going to know anything about the team until after BYU and I think that's still the case yeah I think I know a few more things but I I at the end of the day this was a survival mode game not a um like good performance definitely well and so I think it'll be until BYU till we know anything for sure I'll say this too when you get so week zero games everyone's playing out of their minds georia T was playing out of their minds against FSU this is just week zero and week one everybody teams play Just differently especially underdogs underdogs especially just come out swinging and so what I will say is that there is a level of maturity that it shows when you are down 13324 with 8 minutes left and you say you know what we Cann let this game they don't panic they came in they win it yeah it's against the worst team everyone knows that the difference is they they played against a team that was playing Super Scrappy everything in their lives depended on it they were like you know what let's just go ahead and put this away we're going to be mature about this we're going to put this away and they did it so there's something to be said about that there's a positive to take away with it I also think like you'd rather have a sloppy wakeup call game in a win than a loss so like like let's just say we cruise we Cruis today and then we cruised obviously Houston Christian and BYU comes out and punches Us in the mouth we're handling adversity this season for the first time but like we've already been tested in a game we should have easily won and so maybe it's a good wakeup call that like hey guys we can't just show up and think that we're going to destroy people like we we have to be better and so I just think I think it could be a positive when we look at it that way of like okay we didn't lose maybe this is the the kick and the tush we needed to like hey guys like let's go we can't we can't show up like this every week yeah unacceptable I hope it's that and I think it will be and I think we yeah I think we have a lot of good veteran leadership I mean it was disappointing today but I don't think we'll make the same mistake again but we'll see we did what we needed to do to win and at the end of the day that's what really matters we got it done and had we not done that which we were so close this would have been a very different podcast yeah it would have but it would have been a different podcast but we also wouldn't be able to talk about how the composure at the end really came through and that's something that will if you can fix if you can cross your te's dot your eyes in terms of discipline I think a lot of the other position groups are going to fall into place and then we'll we'll know that we have the composure to come back and win games which is that would be that's I would much rather have that than maybe not figure that out and not have composure in like a game against FSU or TCU yeah and I I do think we may have gotten trapped in kind of the fallacy of kind of stooping to your opponent's level where I think we I think we like for some reason mentally how we played the decisions we were making we kind of just you know got sucked down to their level almost and and and that's just why we didn't show up maybe they were too confident going into it they were you know I I don't know I I don't want to say anything too mean but like it's just it it seems like they weren't focused yeah they weren't thinking not until the last eight minutes really and so I guess with me saying all this I'm hoping that when we actually get up against the top tier teams that we playing this season yeah we'll also step up you know but that's also like kind of a sign of immaturity in some aspects because a mature team a mature player should be able to just play hard and play good all the time well let's see against obviously have your bad days and you're unlucky like we'll see what we do against Houston Christian if we look tight if we look good if we look together yeah I I want zero penalties next game like like a more business like yeah performance like we get in take care of business get out yeah the very Le maybe have one or two small penalties for five yards a piece like it's like all right we delay a game because we were thinking about doing I mean even that shouldn't really happened but um oh real quick Shameless plug if you are watching we have 13 people watching were talking about this Duram the game and my question was is like if the head coach is calling the plays what is the OC doing like what is their job if the head coaches calling the plays during the game there's probably a lot of game planning um he's also the tight end's coach so assistant to the play caller a play caller I don't know yeah it just doesn't make sense well he's doing a great job but yeah I don't I don't know actually I don't know what he'll be doing it it'll depend it'll be different for each time each time somebody's in that position yeah CU sometimes they like I don't think USC for example has an OC I think it's just Lincoln Riley but we have an OC M I don't know it just depends maybe like a just a puppet I don't know yeah I think we don't know a whole lot about the ACC yet just I'm I'm turning the page a little bit in my mind but uh going to ACC I don't think we know enough yet I texted a buddy today I was like either the ACC is deep or we're trash um probably the latter it maybe the latter um but uh but we're we're undefeated as an ACC team um the Mountain West has yet to win a a football game so oh and two I don't know if we should be bragging about that too much I'm not bragging I'm just stating facts okay yeah that's good that's just stating just stating facts so as we continue to look forward should we talk a bit about hcu what we're looking at before we do that I kind of want to talk about Georgia Tech Florida State oh yeah yeah think let's do it I mean I I just want to say this Georgia Tech was underrated going into that game yeah for sure they they are a good team and I think that Georgia Tech would hang with the you know the bottom third of the SEC and the Big 10 pretty easily I think and so I'm not saying that they would go in there and beat LSU but what I'm saying is like could they hang with Mississippi State yeah I think so I think they could hang with Mississippi State Kentuck or you know I don't know I want to go that far just because you know no no no we can go that far well anyway um I just want to say but yeah no they're they're better than what we gave him credit for I think what a lot of people gave him I knew were pretty good going I will say ever since Memphis as soon as he made the move I always thought Mike norell was a fraud so I'm honestly not that surprised I just I don't think he's a great coach as much as I like the guy DJ is is just he's just not very good either um yeah he really did not show up today he it almost like reminds me like Russell Wilson like 12 for 15 in the first half 92 yards like just a lot of quick throws almost like they don't trust him to throw the ball down the field very strange um um yeah strange strange strange strange I think we all want we all hoped Florida state would would make it to Dallas undefeated but at the same time it's also kind of hilarious because they think they're too good for the ACC and they lose their first game so how funny it would be they Dro that one they Dro their Clemson they lose to us that'd be uh that'd be something else but can't get can't get too ahead of ourselves I mean FSU is still good I'm telling you week zero games are weird yeah week zero and week one games even are just weird you good teams can get punched in the mouth and they don't know what's happening week 10 they're a totally different team I mean even week six Alabama they they they looked terrible first few games last year and they came on at the end that's and that's exactly it and so don't I can't I I think we can't get too down on FSC right now other than just know that yeah Georgia Tech is they're a decent team that punched them in the mouth hard early good they're well coached and they followed through so that's just and I mean we could say the same thing about us like a little bit of grace even though we were very very frustrated and disappointed for sure I mean we should be I mean it the performance was unacceptable there's no doubt it unacceptable um yeah I saw barcol Florida State posted you'all ever had to throw footballs in a game where having jet lag after a plane ride around the world didn't think so it's like um yeah but didn't both teams have that right so I also I loved how Georgia Tech used like the best plays in college football 25 to their advantage it was like everyone spent the last month playing this game and it kind of played out on the field it's like there was just they were running it up the middle they were running some great uh jet sweeps speaking of college 25 should we talk about the our halftime show yeah yeah the halftime show is pretty great at halftime SMU absolutely destroyed Oklahoma 20 to3 I was Oklahoma and I got destroyed I suck I play SMU I suck at it too yeah he destroyed me I think RJ did pretty well in that game did or was it I threw a bomb to Jake Bailey oh yeah Bailey had a really yeah yeah yeah and then the same thing happened like right afterwards oh and it got batted down and the same thing happened in the Nevada game yeah the I will say this about our receivers a lot of question marks there right now nobody stepped up yeah nobody yeah RJ's you know in the tight obviously it's a little different but yeah not not a whole lot of confidence in Our receiver group right now but that could that's partially on the quarterback but still I mean we didn't see a lot of targets for the guys that we've heard have been the best obviously Jordan Hudson may be because of the penalty but also like romelo Brinson I think I saw him one catch did he even get I don't even see him get targeted after that definitely a just a weird one across the board um yeah yeah so I think it'll be interesting looking into the future with you know we weren't expecting FSU to take this loss and so yanic we were kind of talking about it what does this look like for our chances and it may be kind of silly talking about our chances of going to the AC title after this game but how does it affect what we need to do to get there yeah um good for us in the sense that I think we actually have a better chance than I originally thought even with how this game went I actually think we have a good chance a better chance than before of beating FSU because I think what we can I think we are we have areas that we can fix I think it is fixable with our matur with the age of our team but with FSU having already lost a game and frankly they look vulnerable and they probably going to drop another game I don't think they're going to go undefeated the rest of the way I think they're going to lose another game um hopefully to us we can't lose more than one game if we are a two- lost team we won't make the playoffs either we won't be in the conference Championship because we're going to have a two lost team like Miami in over us or we're going to have two lost teams in the Big 10 or the SEC that we are not getting in over no and so it just reinforces in my mind we have one potential freebie and that doesn't give me a lot of hope not not not hope that's not it I have a lot of hope it doesn't give me a lot of confidence right now with where we're at I think we can get there I think it's I think our team could be elite it's going to take some maturing and like I said before thank God for Houston Christian coming up this week because I think we can fix a lot of it this week and then it'll give us another week preparing after that to really get in shape but yeah it's I don't think we should be talking about the playoffs after we just saw yeah that's fair I'll take the blame I ask question yeah it's but we there's not a lot of room for error we'll just say that we need to get on the I don't think there ever was yeah I mean and I think just I think it's good if we wrap this up soon but the Houston Christian Outlook like I we just want to see like I think clean cleaned up more discipline less penalties MH maybe like one quarterback playing until like maybe halftime and then like once the game's over then put in the other quarterback I think just like seeing a cleaner operation where we're not looking like we have no idea what we're doing I think that's the simple goal here is like let's just get back to basics because this was just awful yeah I totally understand though if we want to put in Kevin Earley you know like there's still in the front of my mind is Preston Stone got hurt playing in a time when he really didn't need to so he was playing the first half the game was pretty well under control and we still had him in and he got hurt yeah so we we do want to be careful of that you know I trust Rhett in that in that way like we want to keep him healthy Houston Christian is not our biggest game if Kevin starts Houston Christian I think we still win like we still blow them out but um I hope um but I do want to see consistency I think Ben talked about this throughout the game we didn't let Preston Stone get on a roll wouldn't let him get hot um and so it made it very hard on them so hopefully we see that a little bit next week I I'm not sure that we need to play him a whole half if we're dominating but um but I want to see some we want to see some I just want to comment Kevin actually he scored a touchdown on one of his first two drives right was it his second Drive I think a tou it was a field goal we had a touchdown was a touchdown first I think touchdown then field goal with Kevin yeah Kevin no like he he actually did move the ball and he did score Y and so don't get me wrong press I mean he did a lot for us last season so I'm not saying he doesn't deserve to go back in he did come through for us and he did great in that especially at the fourth quarter um first half not withstanding but yeah Kevin was I mean he was definitely serviceable oh yeah for sure um I don't feel I I don't feel like it's he frankly he just didn't even get a chance in the second half and not saying that that was the wrong decision because we won the game and so that's obviously going with stone was great it's the right decision but Kevin didn't give me anything that made me lack confidence s him yeah but we need one quarterback we can't continue with this in my opinion with nonsense of no it's true two quarterbacks switching off drives it's just it's not going to work and it didn't work tonight so all right so uh let's do score predictions for Houston Christian and then we'll uh kind of wrap it up and we'll talk to sure we'll talk again in a week so uh Ben who do you have I think I'm going to go with Houston Christian in going to be able to stop them the whole game they'll get a field goal in the first half touchdown the second anybody want to revise their season season predictions before we close out no I'm going to stick with nine and three what I say 10 and two 10 and two 10 and two said 10 and two before the game was over I joked about flipping the two and 10 because we looked that bad but I mean I I'm just going to go with what I said I I feel less confident obviously about that today but I think we can turn it around so we'll see I think we can turn it around for sure um before we close off I just
