you feel though taking on ready the world's best play unish fch [Applause] and Nick so funny in the coin toss when players were talking to the chair umpire igos fian I mean how many matches has she played out here on this court asking the chair umpire where the players boxes were located here I found that so interesting they haven't changed the Court's been here 27 years the same position I always wonder what's in that is that purely just a player being so Tunnel Vision on what they have to do but I mean because as you say there's only there's four majors yeah the boxes don't change at any of the Maes really do they as far as I understand it maybe she's just so focused on what she's doing needed a a fresher course but again the last few years she has spent the majority of her matches out here on that court so found that a little interesting it's a tough Court to play on a challenging Court how big it is the Shadows during the day the noise that kind of comes through players who play out here have a big [Music] Advantage an adjustment lince when you came here I was part of the year it was 1997 when this court opened and took the main stadium at this great tournament from Lewis Armstrong Stadium I think it also changed when the addition of the roof seems to maybe just keep some of the ambient noise in a little bit more did get rid of the wind it used to be quite Breezy down court side that is now changed the one making particularly slow start is she comes out of the blocks quickly very often strong push [Music] big much of a better player is she than when she won here two years ago do you think what parts of her game have evolved from your perspective and for shant she's always looking to try and get better and there's some players that get to the top and they're just trying to keep things status quo I mean EGA made a big change to her serve in the offseason really kind of changed that motion abbreviated it she's elongated it a little bit more again was a little bit more fluid and long she won the WTA finals went into the offseason came to Australia and it was it was almost like a half motion came really straight up now she does it kind of in between with that arm and the takeback we'll see what the results end up being but what the what does that show that a player's number one in the world finishes the year one is still looking to try and make these subtle adjustments to get better forehand is one of the biggest weapons in tennis and how she chooses to use that her biggest challenge is handling the pace what how does she play when time is taken away from her which was an issue here last year right in that defeat to AA Peno on someone that has challenged her in ways that others haven't sabalenka similar oh that's beautiful and that's one of the challenges golf has when she plays Shante gols forand doesn't really penetrate the court and so shvan knows she gets a little bit of time when she goes there Koko tried to Red Line it this year at roling garos didn't work and then went back to playing a little bit more with variety and higher shots and that's a tough task to beat ego using that as well the first time she's been able to land a first serve but a solid service game love to find out from everybody Nick who's your favorite to win both we'll start with the women I think sabalenka probably just on on what are you know coming in here just the trajectory that she's on that would be my gut feeling um I I for me I was talking to Jim about this yesterday my I think I think uh I struggled a look away from jovic personally I just think he's I mean he must be feeling so good right now he's not any way right when he comes in here so often but yeah just that my everything to me says that Novak's going to be playing pretty loose over the next couple of weeks but we'll see NOC has really figured out a way to feel so comfortable here in New York stays with friends in in Jersey and does a nice job of kind of staying away from some of the chaos when he doesn't have to be here that's important to a player the more comfortable they feel typically the better they play at an event te was saying that wasn't she in her Bree T press conference she actually stays literally opposite Central Park because she says I need that Greenery I need to get out of the hustle and the bustle and need to be in Central Park just to get away from it relax somehow yeah there's no question this is the most kind of chaotic in in terms of being a major for the players some of the others you can walk to or or drive within five minutes some of the others most all the other Majors you can hear are pin drop in the main stadium here sometimes you can't hear the ball coming off your opponent's racket that takes some adjusting here on Arthur Stadium it's just a lot that the players have to kind of change that is different here than at other Majors such good length she's able to keep this lady right now struggling to make much of an impact oh suffocating isn't it and off that second serve when she gets on to you you are moving backwards very often yeah she gets so much acceleration on that forehand she gets the power she gets the rotation she gets it to go off the court as well it's a challenge when player there isn't really a safe spot to hit to on the court she felt like her backand was a weakness at the Olympics and then spent the next last few weeks really working on that side so she didn't feel like that impressive start controlling proceedings is the world number one out here here in these early stages thank you ladies and gentlemen ready for play 15 separat ears mentally do you think from the rest and obviously talinka is one major there's players in the mix that aren't too far away but it does feel feel as though E's mind is is perhaps dialed in more but but more the focus is is that much more from her at times than the rest of the field what's behind that do you think intensity you just always feel it with ego when she's on a court sometimes she might get frustrated but you watch her you look at her eyes in practice you look at her in the beginning of matches she's got that part of her that's tough to teach Steph graph had it and you just knew when you went out there like better get on the board early here because they have this amazing ability to start really quickly some players like to work their way into matches and when you're playing two out of three sets don't really have the luxury of that but only a handful of players recognize that and can utilize that in the beginning very first game EA is looking to get on the board play her style it's hard to do and a lot of players struggle with bringing that kind of intensity to every training session every workout every match so natural for eego yeah I still think one of the more remarkable records that she has and she has quite a few is her finals record she's 22 and four in the finals that's incredible isn't it it's just a different level and again there there's some plane styles that maybe rattle her it I think sabalenka could tell you she's had to up every part of her game and training because of egoa and that's what good Rivals do to each other it's been 16 of the first 19 points played here games to reminded to head to usopen.org because there is plenty to see there it's your online home for all the scoring the highlights the stats was great to listen to the interviews as well postmatch pre-tournament from all the players did get online and have a look it's been remarkable uh this tournament already officially we're on day two but if you're we coming here last week what is it day nine maybe from the amount of fans what was it 240,000 I think came through for fan week the qualifying rounds which this young lady was playing in and I don't know if you were watching I was trying to watch some of the outer courts yesterday walking around it was packed it was great to see every Court really filled the capacity yeah such a great energy here isn't there it's always had it but it's as you say it feels like it's grown substantially in the last couple of years big props to Eric Bak as well yeah for all the work he's done in building that extra week Eric and Stacy Al the tournament director have done a great job of making this such an entertainment event obviously centered around the tennis but offering so much more here on the grounds game well and that will raise the field good Factor she's on the board Shon dominating the early stages shant leads four games to one pering her lead shant at the top of the world rankings and in the race it's it's around 2,000 points right now she is in the race ahead if you look at the actual rankings similar just a little over and no question sabalenka made up some ground by being able to win in Cincinnati but it's benfante who's had by far the most successful and consistent season of the top players she's the only one so far that has qualified for the WTA finals at the end of the year expect more announcements are are coming soon but a huge accomplishment for EGA offi so early in the season yeah and again we look at players that have beaten eager this year and they do tend to fit a pattern Nosa at the Australian Open Nosa someone who hits big off both sides sabalenka rakina has beaten a alexandraa someone who not necessarily in terms of the weight of shot of the of the other players but Alexandre plays with aggression she hits the ball flat and and they all fit a similar mole those four players [Applause] rova does not hit with a tremendous amount of pace so a bigger challenge for her she's gotten a couple of unforced Errors these last couple of games and that has helped her get on the scoreboard and that always helps a player kind of relax out here when they're not accustomed to playing on this big Stadium let's first service what because she works so hard to get herself back into the [Applause] point 30 it's been as high as 65 in the world as this lady that was a last summer least a couple of unforced Errors from EGA it is very challenging this time of day to play out on this court and EA on the side of the court that has the shadow but she's got to try and track that shot the coming from light and then kind of lack of a better word into the darkness and just a master her timing a little bit on this end well the return was a very fortuitous one she's been able to make the most of it leads four games to two first set it's interesting you look at a ranking at 104 because that obviously usually we talked about any number one seed in qualifying but it feels like in this day and age the value of being a top 100 player financially is so much more than it was a few years ago you look at the prize money at the majors and you compare them with the the second tier of the sport it is the golf is only getting bigger lens isn't it yeah and is was a rule of thumb it certainly was mine and my parents were you cannot turn pro until you're in the top 100 and at least if you're in the top 100 if you're outside the top 100 you're not guaranteed to get into the majors and if you're in that top 100 if you look at the map four times you're guaranteed I mean first round prize money here this year $100,000 and their slams not as much but but fairly close and that's what you put into a travel development maybe hiring a coach that's a better forehand there from EA best tennis is when she's able to go through the court and mix it with going in off the court and the power of the forehand a lot of times is averaging up to 80 81 miles per hour on a good day first round qualifying prize money 25,000 that is the golf if you're talking about I was having a discussion yesterday with someone about the sort of structure of the sport and and made the good point that effectively if you're playing at the second TI you're not playing for prize money you are playing for points at the second primarily yes there's some prize money at the second tier but you are playing for points mostly in order to try and get yourself into these sorts of events the Big Four [Music] last night there was Stone Stevens out here on Arthur rash Court Nick up 90 6030 and honestly wasn't even that close and ends up losing the match to claraa Burell did a great job barell of just kind of hanging around but this is unusual from IGA from four love up to now just 43 yeah the Gap has closed and this first set has become a little more interesting be leads four games to ready for play just misjudged that with the feet this lady a little deep just a tight one in there last round of qualifying as we mentioned 64 in the third to Priscilla h ah it's a better point there from EA EA plays her best when she is looking to move forward she's looking to impose herself can't get rattled for with a few errors the her path to winning this title is playing that kind of tennis on her front foot [Applause] the ball into the forehand with a B pace and getting the desired result that she was looking for oh iakimova has gotten used to the pace of shant and just trying to get as many balls back in play as possible she just has one winner but the unforced error is tied at nine EA had started those first games first four games not missing many but just as what her Mark a little bit here the last few minutes oh what a tremendous get that is because the volley was a good one winner number two from rockim moova and you're right this is a part of the game uh igos fian trying to get more comfortable with moving forward and thought she had done enough with that volley chance remarkably to keep this tight this first set y never beaten a top 20 player him over she's at five goes at it make a pretty good impression on Sab lener a couple of weeks ago in Washington lost four in the third to Sabal lener over there not really being able to live with this Elite opposition though so far in her career and it's so challenging then to get that one huge win at at this stage right at this level sometimes it's easier at a 250 or 500 event love 15 [Applause] [Music] slightly quizzical look the world number one up towards a corner having done well to get herself back in the point that's the beauty of eager speed she's not out of any rallies and can move so well defensively get in and out of the corner Corners time and time again return early danger there of course as you do somewhat end up rushing yourself doesn't have a lot of pace does she off that first delivery though look at the average first surf speed just 94 miles hour the price didn't she just being a little too hesitant off the first volley Rakim overa does pretty well doesn't have the overwhelming power she doesn't have that one big weapon G himing to work so hard just to stay with the pole but ultimately undone 304 [Music] what space was there wasn't it you Astic loves to change on that backhand wing and triangle line challenges is when you're feeling just maybe a little vulnerable on that Wing it's so tough to find that space line and couple of Errors have come from shant's racket with that backhand wing perfect point there from Rakim MOA so hard to get a drop shot byant Canan was there in plenty of time on this forehand but rakova guessed right Sensational LOB oh yes it's good depth that's the wall you can see where she just doesn't quite at the time just gets a little underneath [Music] game Rocky loser has worked very hard to stay in touch here in the first Buton well the champion of two years ago put off to a very fast start Ladi gent in somewhat ready the pole looking to serve it out funny enough EA having much more success with their second serve winning almost 90% of those points got to take into account if your egoa and she's able to get it up and out of the strike zone of ramova that's when she struggles there's another one nine of 10 now for this first set compared to just 55% of the first serve points won so often leads the tour doesn't she in second serve points one and that's the case again this year 30 low underrated part of shant's game no doubt it's the second serve and one of the few players that really accelerates and uses that kick serve to her Advantage for this has been a clean game and [Applause] it's taken perhaps a touch longer than it looked as though it may but fonc with more set points game impressive end it was a little up and down at times but Fon does take the first 40 [Applause] minutes so made a decent fist of that opening set but plenty of work to do here Dallas set to the world's best 15 l it's nice to see rakova settle down after losing those first four games and being able to play better tennis than she did in the beginning now so important for her to try and get off to a better start in this second set 15 1 few too many of those as well four [Applause] now just the outside of the line showing it here on the big screens in Ash say Just In by a couple millimeters 143 early change of Direction get ahead of the point so crucial against Ron of course is able to take it arm away so quickly [Music] again it's the back camp and that is the shot make is going to win a second US Open that shot has got to she's got to dial it in she's got to start to believe in that shot again I was so surprised when she said at the Olympic she felt like she had a hole on her backhand so rare for a top player especially a world number one to kind of let others into that [Music] got to be aware if you're rakova out there what side to play ladies and gentlemen now of respect for both the players please try to keep your voices down during Play Rather looked as though there's been a hole in Coco gos 400 times this summer hasn't it as well do these players are these top players Lind you were one of them are they able to shake that off a little quicker than others are in that bulk of belief of having achieved what they have done let saying you got to fake it till you make it you got to give the air the aura off that yeah it doesn't bother me I'm fine but in reality you're definitely aware when you're out there of what's happening I'm always I'm always amazed at some of the players that maybe aren't aware on the other side of the net about what's going on he I mean it's so important you of course you want to play matches to your pns your favorite places to play in the court but you've got to practice every scenario you've got to be able to hit it at anywhere in the court at any time based on what's happening on the other side of the net game this game second set so an opening hold for buckle down and when you have the green light to really play a bigger game if that is your style so much comes down to the personality of the players as well do you want the racket on your hand or are you hoping for it to to come to you go down the list of the great Champions just about every single one of them was willing to go after a win MH and the value L of tennis IQ is that something do we build that to up he's got a he or she's got a great tennis IQ is that something or is it a case of just playing on your own terms I would love like players to really kind of invest in that and of course some of it you can go over all the data you want but can you pick up on it those little subtleties when out playing I thought Ash party one of the smartest servers that never played her there's Stan Smith great to see that Legend around back and not just a shoe as some people think he is exactly even though he did make some yeah good Financial gains out of his shoes amazing ashb could hit any serve in the box from any toss and would do that on purpose throw behind her head and actually not kick it yep very underrated part of her game wasn't the tallest player but knew how to pitch a perfect game but I guess L you also have to have the skill set right to do that if you know what I'm coming from you've got to have a that skill variety haven't you in order to implement that that's the part I think you can help teach mhm 15 13 something Judy Murray talked a lot about with Andy when he grew up playing a lot of matches understanding building his skill set how to unpick opponents he he had a great understanding of how to beat an opponent how to find a weakness in their game and that was something they developed a lot in his Junior days nice come back from a double F and she give any insight in how a lot of matches so Andy used to go to the club in Scotland in the middle of winter and play doubles against two 45 year olds when he was was 11 and 12 and he loved that and Dan Evans was very similar another obviously colleague in terms of the British players he was the same used to play loads of doubles matches as a [Music] youngster learning out a win isn't yeah I mean you obviously not that better than anyone but4 so learning to compete enjoy the process you get better and that's the goal right every day every week however you want to look at it but really against anyone player across the net doesn't have to be better than you all the time for that to happen that's a better point though and this match is so intriguing four love for Shante but you my math is correct and I'm not a great math student it is 72 the last nine games you're right that's something that IGA is just normally doesn't happen with her but 18 unforced erors from shant that is an awful lot in this match where she's in complete control [Applause] here 52 L wait wait four I wasn't good I wasn't good M either exactly I put her that she won the six se yeah exactly got me questioning myself there exactly wait I I thought she ran the first set no exactly five of the last seven yeah EA looking to stop it here yep and she's able to didn't sound right one game on discuss coming from her Corner coach here with him this week juliaa got a brother in the the camp as well is the rakova camp there they're on the good side they get the shade for the First on Match yeah nice and this is the the new challenge for the players as the fans are let in after every game this is going to be hard for EGA as this tourament goes on she likes things as perfect as possible so she's going to have to get used to this as most of the tournaments are kind of going towards the the end of games we're going to let the fans in so they're not stuck outside for 15 minutes or so happened in Australia this year didn't it there the first major to really take a seat quickly please please any SE for now thank you and a little bit depends on the size of the Arena doesn't it yeah and where how far to get to the seat exactly ushers play a big part in that as well keeping it moving it's a whole new world and the players have got to be willing to adapt a little bit [Applause] [Music] good to I fact the one in this match will take on either Daria savel or Ena Shahara they have just started the third set over on 14 Shahara coming through the qualifying and the major in singles for the first time good story you can now 50% when she's moved forward four eight there is Thomas woodi EA right on that side where her Camp is sitting Thomas trying to give her couple of tips here to try and get this break just maybe calm her down a little bit after getting off to such a great start y stting to accelerate on summer of 2019 another perfect record do you think she's ever going to be able to win s SW 19 it's going to be a big ask isn't it yeah of all the surfaces that is going to be tricky really got close so far is she I mean I guess some surprising losses Putin SAA this year Selina last year those aren't the players that take time away you understand if it was a big hitter AA Peno early on movement the biggest hurdle do you think for her on gr SC or or where's where's the issue y it's harder to she moves aggressively right I mean she will slide into shots push off really aggressively to get back into the court can't do that on grass grip changes are are tough third it's one of the reasons I in Australia as belber those courts have been playing pretty fast and she's never quite played her best tennis down under either m I appreciate it varies LMS from year to year buts the courts in Australia differ from here generally and climatically I guess you got to factor in the humidity a bit as well but what are the differences between playing on Rod La Arena compared to playing here for example I always felt there was a little faster there again like as you said that they could change it up one day and make it a little bit slower game the balls play a little differently as well lead three games to one second set e one here that actually surprises me based on what we were talking about how loud it can be on this court we've already heard that chair ire once asked the crowd to show some respect and focus on the tennis EA needs matches so at the start of the Year sometimes it's it's a little bit of a struggle for her to play her best right off right out of the gates in January think another Factor at wimbl is the ball the Slinger ball at wimbl gets pretty heavy pretty quickly I mean I don't know how you found it but it's different sort of ball to pretty quickly I guess if anyone's going to solve it it's probably going to be her at some point given as we have discussed her how strong she is between the years [Applause] especially with her goals she knows where the holes are in her quote resume she was so devastated not to leave Paris with the gold medal she wanted that more than anything and you get a sense with EA she will turn her attentions towards La here pretty soon [Music] [Applause] Fort father of course was an Olympian and grown up around the discussions at home about how significant and how proud it is to represent your country in an Olympic games let's preservice for game raimov slightly wild finish but a comfortable hold for Rakim overa still in the conversation leads three games to two second sets doesn't work at the moment we are working on fixing the issue fairly consistent couple of technical issues as well we had somebody out at the the change of ends there just looking at uh was going on around a chair onire [Applause] 15 [Music] L try third love given what we've discussed do you think winning here was her finest achievement Lind in terms of her career so far obviously winning at the French was magnificent but to win here two years ago was that the yeah was that her finest hour do you think you look back now yes and terms of winning Bros first of all as a teenager unseated in the co era move to the fall anyone who was able to kind of overcome all the challenges that were associated to play in that time it was incredible so that was amazing to see and she really shined in that tournament as as the tournament went on but as we've come to to know e winning here especially the year that she won it it she had a lot of self-doubt going into the tournament didn't like the the tennis balls she spoke about that this is a tough court for her she likes everything everything perfect she likes to be able to control everything quiet people not moving nice play there she was down in that semi-final the sabalan break in the third I believe she was down 42 able to come back and win that against one of her biggest Rivals if not the biggest rival that was an Eck of a match on four in the third in the end let's no question she's the best clay quarter in women's tennis big challenge for anyone to beat her there oh Naomi Osaka got close this year had match point in really perfect conditions for Osaka the roof closed she was just hitting bombs from the back of the Court EA found a way through that one now EA's got to find a way to win another one of these Majors she knows it as the world number one whether it be in Australia or in Wimbledon next year maybe at another US Open here she wants to be known as more than just the clay Court goddess that's a fairly out of character reaction as well which speaks to the frustrations she's faing so far those numbers as Lind just pointed out to me at the change of ends are a little high from where she would expect them to be got a better point there able to be unbalance of his last couple of ground strokes advantage [Applause] very tough to get on to that 14 of 18 points one in that department today and that's a one stat that is Sensational for EA today everything else probably below where she would want that level to be just actually look back to when she won the French in 2020 and it's worth remembering it was only only her seventh major the scores 1 and two 1 and four 3 and 2 1 and two 3 and 1 two and you ladies and gentl ready for one of those was against Simona halop who had dismantled EA the year before yeah the favorite that edition of randos everyone had heard so much about the youngster wasn't sure could she bring her big stuff in the biggest of matches really showed everyone there that this is this is what she came for right the trophies 54 in the wall coming [Applause] that he's not been ranked 54 anytime recently go thir 15 try to find a little bit more width what we doing is a consequence 14 92 mph first serve Anda unable to put that into play she needs to get sharper no question if she's going to lift the trophy at the end of this got to use this first week if she can get through these matches keeps it close though keeps it competitive looking touch onety out there and by one been a very impressive season for this lady won five titles in all been so consistent throughout the year rarely has she Fallen early start of the year with play for Poland United cup example what isn't it because that ball is totally out of the SC zone so you have a decision to make where you're going to stand roim MOA just hasn't found the best spot to make contact with that second serve EA just continues to dominate without winning almost 80% of the second serve points that is a fantastic stat for IGA got to do something a little different if your ramova here she looks like she's moved back a little bit maybe she'll wait till the kick comes down back into her Strike Zone that's exactly what she did one one few points she's been able to win on the second serve to see the players make those tactical adjustments during the matches 1 15 [Applause] oh that's a make an impressive adjustment get just that 112 mile hour first serve and ramova got it over mostly with her frame was a tricky shot for Shian to have to play game too hot to handle Tech now game away from the second [Applause] [Applause] this set the first serve of rakova has really picked up 12 of 15 L bit out of find the player please try to have a seat for now without that return 31 for SE love [Applause] game look for a big finish but at times it has been rather hot and cold out here from the world's best she'll serve for a place in so a chance to finish the job here serving at a 7 54 that's some finish landed that on a dime oh love C was second or first match but second round of Cincinnati shant was a big on graa set in 52 had match points quite uncharacteristically dropped that second set the depth was impecable and this has been a game that have been a fair few cracks in the fionet game decidedly shaky [Applause] 15 14 on right [Music] tough game from Roa but a couple of donations from shant there characteristically wild wasn't it may have played a very good opening point but balls in play were simply good enough to under a second break the belief [Music] yeah love your team [Applause] drop shot reflection one was a little too heavy [Applause] 15 sure remember many matches where you get just can't stay in the rallies with a player that plays at this pace [Applause] 22 errors in this set from eager come on yeah and not many of them have been forced of they really Lind I mean with the greatest of respect it's been almost Shon trying to over press losing control [Applause] come on four better shot there you could hear her coach Thomas just trying to talk her through this and there you could hear the voice of darer sports psychologist she's a bit rattled a a very opportune Mar as well it takes a certain player and a certain mindset still go after your shots like this it's such a big occasion it's the backand a lot of Errors have come off that side of the court for Shante full belief in that last one [Applause] you looked as though she came out of it a bit early didn't it pull up out of the sh of it quickly again the little sneak forwards was effective doing a nice job of handling all these different shots EA hit a moonball there one out of the air one on the rise game got number 104 still very much in this first round story out there this afternoon frr that situation the opening Point feel take someone on the back foot it's into the score line make a play [Applause] thir te up [Applause] okay better game here from EA maybe to try and res there got to be some concerns Nick again opening round her Opening match in Cincinnati 6052 four match points again graa well outside the top 50 here we got a player outside the top 100 set in 53 lead four C 15 fairness was played a a good match isn't she and it's so easy for us in this situation to look at it and say yeah there's a lot of onforce and there are but opponent has been very solid especially given do you remember it was for love shant and we were wondering how would how long would the match last how would ramova start to get on the board once she got on the board Nick she was able to settle down and make it about the tennis not about the court not about who she was playing lot of players struggled to do that G forced to move up again it's been that sort of set this lady has given her a third test second set tie break and a tie break it is to [Music] settle at five and two on TI break this season for what it's worth and one of those losses was to graa just a couple of weeks ago big test here for the world number one one zero next number on spe of brova really keeping her in these exchanges one impressive it's not easy to hang with EA from the back of the court in all of these rallies she's extending them many are going over six seven shots and neutralizing so well as well L isn't it that ability to use that slice keep the ball a bit lower a good job in that department two 1 on [Applause] four two oh there other there is the total number 39 so it's been a fairly even split fairly deep in the court to produce a winner of that sort of price and amazingly just the second forehand winner off the racket of rakova so deep in the court IGA is also and rakova recognizing that and being able to just get around the outside of the ball a little bit
