NFL Network Newsroom here in Los Angeles I Rett Lewis got the great Steve whes down on the edge and welcoming the Coach Ron Rivera to our preseason coverage today coach great to have you with us as well today thank you R I'm excited it's a dawn of a good season I think going be a great opportunity for us to watch some great football going forward and look guys cut down day is approaching Steve great opportunity for some players to make a name for themselves today that's really what this is most of the rosters completed as you know right by now but this is where those guys in the back end of the roster the final three or four spots can be filled out especially when it comes to the kicking game right Bridget cond thank you very much live for us there at Ford Field in Detroit as we get you ready for kickoff course game two of our quadruple header here live on NFL Network today is in Arlington where the Cowboys are happy to be home uh although they still remain without the services of CD L does your level of concern rise the further Camp goes along and CD isn't part of it as with all this good work being done out here no and I don't mean that to being sensitive to our fans are to CD uh but uh we're in good shape there and uh we are having uh promising talks say well why you keep talking won't you do something again as in anything it takes both of you there at the same time uh but I believe it's got the proper amount of everything emphasis importance for everybody involved here and we'll see how it goes well there's no question coach how valuable CD lamb is and that seems to be the issue right in try to determine that value and how much it's worth there as they try to get him into camp but how do you feel like Mike McCarthy is handling all of this as a head coach you know dealing with your best player not being available right now well for the most part he's got to get across to his players that you know this is not a distraction guys this is us preparing getting ready for the regular season continue to do your job and just know that we're working on getting CD back on the football field for this football team but deep down Mike does know what a distraction he does know what hard on this team I mean you're talking about a guy that has accounted for 37% of the receiving yards for this offense onethird of it goes through CD lamb so again this is a guy that they got to get back on the football field get him ready to go because again he's going to have less than two weeks once that contract has been agreed upon and Coach you said let's take it from the players teammates point of view right they're not worried about this right now they're out there trying to seize their opportunity go through what they have to do to get through training camp but if this gets to regular season that's going to become a significant issue that's when it becomes a distraction because wins and losses things like that in this offense you just mentioned it more than 30% of the offense go excuse me the passing game goes to him and and I remember early on a couple years ago when Ezekiel Elliot had the same problem remember he didn't start off right away because they had that contract situation and they started slow it hampered them a little bit that's the one thing that these guys don't want to see it happen to their offense is start slow exactly right uh so we'll keep an eye on that in Dallas again that's well we've certainly seen and heard plenty of big plays from Mal leak neighbors throughout training camp however have seen less big plays from the Giants quarterback group this preseason been a tough go Daniel Jones had the two picks uh last week for the Giants and had some joint practices with the Jets this week where s Gardner was asked about Daniel Jones um me man the competitive periods it was very competitive and U it was great like I had fun out there today you know um I don't really know what to say okay guys that was pretty telling sometimes you can say a lot by saying a little uh is that right coach rera Steve White back here guys what do you think coach I'm not sure if I've ever seen saw speechless so you know I mean that's a young man that's you know got an opinion he's a very good player really truly is and he can judge and he has a good feel for what he's doing when he's when he's competing out there no doubt what do you what do you think about that one Steve well I mean look we don't know exactly the Dynamics of the structure of the setup I'm going to put it that way because s came back on social media like hey I said he was a good player listen now we had some good periods we had fun but but coach I you know I want to ask you here it is I I say he's a good quarterback I got a little distracted with something mid interview chill okay see there you go there there coach I want to talk to you you know about that when it comes to Danel Jones yeah um he did not look great in this game against Houston but he hadn't played in a long time either is it fair to assess yeah he had the pi six is it fair to assess him saying oh man he just He's Just Not That Guy well I think at this point in his career you know five years in so far it's it's pretty much the mark you should have an idea and and know that this is your guy or not your guy and they're still wondering about it so that to me is a little bit concerning and again you know his best year was when Brian dble first got there when they first implemented put some new things in people weren't quite sure what they were going to do on offense so people were guessing out there now people have kind of a book as to what to expect and how to play him and that's what you're seeing people understand it this guy is a quarterback that has to be able to move around in the pocket work off a play action pass okay and so now you prepare for that and all of a sudden hey there's there's no surprises you had a scheme against him twice a year I mean what was that like for you uh for us the biggest concern was his ability to move out of the pock and improvise and when he does that he can be pretty good if you go back and you look at that 2022 season again this guy had seven rushing touchdowns so it shows you that his ability to move and run is probably one of his strengths so if he's not moving and going forward okay this is a guy that's a Sitting Duck yeah and look to be fair there were some good throws in that Giants game right they weren't all they weren't all interceptions so you know as as you mentioned a guy that's 5 years in you'd probably like to see him make a better decision down there in the end zone as he did on that pick six right don't make a bad play worse one of those one of those things I know coach has probably said a couple of times in in his home stadium there at fordfield bit of a dress rehearsal today for Lions fans to welcome their crew uh on the field today let's take you out to fordfield where Bridget Conan is hanging out for us getting ready uh for this matchup so Bridget let's talk uh first about the Steelers we're going to see both those quarterbacks today what is the plan for Justin fields and Russell Wilson Rett Russell Wilson will start today Justin Fields also will seed the field as for how long we'll see either quarterback that has not been determined Mike Tomlin just wants to see both of these quarterb backs get into a rhythm remember Russell Wilson and Justin fields are the two most sacked quarterbacks of any quarterback in the league over the past two seasons both quarterbacks have already been sacked three times this preseason as the Steelers are allowing the fourth highest pressure rating of any offensive line This preseason so Tomlin is hoping that that changes today and these quarterbacks can get into a rhythm feel comfortable running the offense as for Russell Wilson he doesn't expect there to be any limitations in in terms of scheme as that had priv previously been the case for Wilson remember he had been working back from that calf injury as for what he's hoping to see from Justin Fields he wants to see what he's seen in practice some of those big explosive plays out here on the field in a real game today but big game for both quarterbacks as we inch closer to week one when this team faces the Falcons and Bridget for the Lions um what a difference a couple of years makes for Dan Campbell right this roster is in a totally different position now and they're going to have some tough decisions to make after this game yeah don't expect to see many starters if any at all for the Lions though I will say we watched Jared gof run with the first team offense earlier this morning out here jir Gibbs who had been dealing with the leg injury I watched him out here running routes catching passes changing directions but look expectations are huge for this Lions team they're on the cover of Sports illustrating the word Super Bowl is being thrown around a lot more in Detroit than then when Dan Campbell got here in 2021 he joked about that this week saying Back Then basically every roster spot was up for grabs whereas this season there's about a handful up for grabs one of those positions that still has yet to be determined is the wide receiver number three position remember Josh Reynolds who was in that spot last year is now with the Denver Broncos he was the biggest deep threat for this team he led the team in yards per reception last season also huge when it mattered most had 17 catches in the fourth quarter which is just second to almond Ross St Brown so they've been looking for his replacement keep an eye on that wide receiver battle out here today as they look to count cut it down to 53 come Tuesday [Music] hello for for for for for yeah for for for
