understand the full history of the Miami versus Florida rivalry we will talk about keys to victory for the Hurricanes but I want to start with what I think is uh is a big story not only heading into this game but heading into the entire season because again um one of the most common burning questions that I've been getting is if I can answer this but I've been getting this question for the past you know eight months ever since last October is and a lot of these questions come from non- Miami fans well what's your coach gonna do this year this guy this guy doesn't know when to take timeouts this guy doesn't know when to take knees what's he gonna do to address those decisions the in-game management stuff and folks um Mario Christal he is addressing it he has addressed it and hopefully that's going to pay dividends so when Christal was in front of the media this week for his week one press conference he was asked about the clock management the time management stuff late in games and how that process is going to work this year and Coach revealed that he has hired a time management coach that's what he referred to it as he has hired someone to make sure that they follow that process now with Christal announcing this of course him even talking about it and addressing it became something that created a bit of a firestorm on social media right some people are just automatically laughing at him even talking about this because yeah it's a call back and a reminder to what happened at Georgia Tech and what or against Georgia Tech it was actually at home and yes that moment not taking that knee that will always be embarrassing there's no way to go back and change the past but I believe it's Mario Christal's Duty and he clearly believes this as well to do everything that he can to ensure that something like that never happens again and I appreciate Mario christall identifying that as an error and now taking steps to correct it because yes similar things have happened before uh when Mario was coaching Oregon they lost a game to Stanford in similar fashion so this has been an issue more than once in the past and I'm glad that at Miami now Mario chrisal is doing something to try and corrected and I've actually seen people talking about this story like criticizing him for actually hiring a time management coach like why should you need somebody to do that or I guess criticizing him for even admitting it now first of all positions like these are not uncommon it's actually something that does exist on certain staffs including in the NFL I'll use an example of Shawn McVey who's you know very young analytic progressive-minded coach Sean McVey uh with the Rams he's used a Special Assistant just for that purpose for time management so this is not something that doesn't exist and I believe that if you're you know a head coach and there are certain things you're you're better at and other things you're not so good at why not have people help you to supplement the things that you're not as efficient at so I appreciate this uh and then second of all yeah for Mario chrisal disclosing this information I know some people like maybe you shouldn't even talk about it like just do it don't talk about it I guess that's one way to look at it but folks it's not as if reporters would ever stop asking him about this so Mario is telling you that steps are being taken to improve Miami's game day management so Mario Christal said talking about last season that they did have a a process in place for time management but he said that that process was not followed properly last year so having a time management coach now in Christal's words is going to help them over harp on these issues it's going to make sure that that process is followed properly so I know that again people people will never stop making fun of what happened last year against Georgia Tech and it it is what it is that Meme that moment that video clip is going to be out there forever and ever but honestly um wouldn't it be worse wouldn't it be worse if he doesn't do anything to fix this so I appreciate the fact that he wants to improve the communication he wants to improve the process and guess what now being able to have someone on the staff whose primary job at least their primary job in late game situations is to make sure that that time management and that process is followed nothing wrong with that especially now when you can extend your coaching staffs because analysts are allowed to be involved in game day operations so if you're able to expand your coaching staff why not take advantage of it and address a need here and so yeah I'm I'm cautiously optimistic now that if things don't go Miami's way against Florida this weekend that the reason Miami loses this game will probably not be because of some horrendous time management Gaff in the final minute or two minutes of the game and we will talk a little bit more not only today but throughout the week about how I think that game is going to play out I I do think Miami can squeak out a close win in the swamp and I do think it's going to be close because I give Florida a little bit more credit than a lot of people do and I also know you know the swamp the swamp is a tough place to play we'll get into a little bit more about that but I want to field uh some questions on this episode from the lockon canes insiders some are related to this time management thing and by the way if you want to join our lockon canes insiders chat click the link in the show description below you give you a lot of added value on there on the Insiders chat we get a question from Kip who says and by the way to be fair Kip asked this question before christall revealed that he has hired a time management coach he says you're going to groan he says feel free to criticize me for being a Debbie Downer excellent podcast material though I have very little faith in Mario's game day acument I want to be proven wrong trust me if the canes were to go eight and four what would the four losses be he says I can't find them on the schedule but I suspect unfortunately that Mario will go ahead and call me out Kip ye of little faith so first of all um the more talent you have on your roster and the more depth you have on your roster suddenly a lot of those late game decisions get easier when your players are executing better on the field that's number one that if you're you know if you're a team that makes some mistakes and you're a little suspect and your quarterback is throwing a lot of interceptions then suddenly it's easier to micromanage decisions that are made by the coaches whether it be play calls and guess what when your players on the field can execute every play in your playbook the play calling seems a lot better and the offensive coordinator looks a lot smarter same thing with some of the late game decisions so players being better and I believe Miami has a significantly better roster this year than they had last year that's one thing and then the other thing Kip as we talked about chrisal did uh is doing his best to to address you know an area where you know the process did not run smoothly last year and as far as picking out four losses on the schedule I mean you know Kip I I guess uh you know you you can Miami has a history like you implied of losing some games that they're supposed to win but I you know I'm I'm thinking Miami is going to win double digit games this year so I I refuse to participate in your exercise and picking out four losses I'm not going to be the one to do that you can do that if you want to uh Folks by the way we heard a lot of good stuff from Miami Hurricanes players so far this week there's still more that are going to speak throughout the week on how they're gonna deal with that crowd noise because yeah there's going to be 93,000 plus packed in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium AKA The Swamp 93,000 plus and of course about 99% of those are going to be Florida Gator fans as if Miami even had a choice because Florida only released 4,000 tickets to Miami which was a a criminally low amount so it's going to be almost all Florida fans obviously at the swamp it's going to be hostile how's Miami going to deal with that and we'll talk about keys to the game you want to keep it locked right here guys we're only for your next listen make sure you check out lockon ACC I host that show with Kenton Gibbs of lockon Wolfpack we take you around the conference big games uh we've been talking a lot about whatever happened to Florida State last what did happen to Florida State last weekend uh locked on acc available free wherever you get your podcast and available free as well on YouTube uh we get this great question from our pal Cali Kane 818 who said what are your keys to the game for Miami to come up on top versus UF on August 31st and who will be the biggest impact player for us in that game outside of Cam Ward maybe one on offense and one on defense uh okay so like my keys and I man I I try not to be too obvious with these like you could say Hey you know don't don't commit too many turnovers keep the penalties to a minimum um I do think first of all and we're going to talk more about what Jaylen Rivers had to say about this but guys need to have laser focus when it comes to the crowd noise like do not let the crowd because it's gonna be loud there do not let the crowd get in your head and throw you off I don't want to see those excessive false start penalties that result from the crowd noise so they need to be laser focused especially on offense because when Miami's offense is out on the field it's going to be really really loud you need to focus and drown that out and I know they've been working on that for whatever you can I mean you can only really prepare for it like in the moment but they've been trying to prepare for it you know another thing and I think about this because this is going to be so prominent in the first game of the year tackling first game of the season is usually when the tackling is the sloppiest because guys haven't done it in real games in so long I know that there's been some tackling in the scrimmages that they've played but overall you're only allowed to practice tackling so much in training camp like it's you know NCAA rules are very limited on contact so usually your tackling is going to be the sloppiest in the first game of the year so I want to see Miami's tackling looking sharp and then yeah this one it's it's obvious but I think it's extremely prominent for a game like this when you're going up against a really experienced and really accurate quarterback Graham Mertz completion percentage over the 70s uh you know he's like what is he like a 6year senior like there's nothing MTZ hasn't experienced before you've got to keep him under constant duress constant duress and pressure and it's not just Ruben Bane it's AEM mesidor who's arguably been the MVP in Fall practices for Miami it's Tyler Baron who has faced Florida before I know Florida fans will say we shut him down every time Tyler Baron ain't done nothing against the G well he's got another opportunity and he's also got a lot of really good teammates to take some pressure and some double teams away from him so we'll see we'll see how that goes and I'm a big Tyler Baron fan Elijah Alon uh you know Miami's got a lot of weapons in the past rush and of course Kiko Maui NOA blitzing keep Graham Mertz under constant duress and I think Miami is going to have a really good opportunity to win the football game and of course if you constantly pressure Merz it's going to give him a harder time to try to exploit Miami's overall very young defensive backfield because we know that that's an area I don't think it's fair to call it a concern because there's a lot of talent in that defensive backfield but it's definitely a question mark so give Graham Merz less opportunities to exploit that as far as who I think are going to be impact players um man um I I think Elijah Royo is really going to have his coming out party um hopefully in this game certainly this season because a Royo you know people forget because he's basically lost the last two seasons due to injuries so people forget how much of a weapon this guy can be healthy as he's ever been tremendous fall training camp he's the total package when it comes to receiving and blocking great hands great route running great leadership on the field I think Elijah Royo who I expect to be the starting tight end uh is going to have an xfactor type of role and then man on defense I guess we could go a number of different directions with this one um you know I I'm just going to go with the with with the entire uh defensive secondary because I would like to see lockdown coverage from the most unproven group on the field and I I would hopefully like to see an interception or two in this game wouldn't that be something uh we get a question that says hey who do I think I think this is more of a season long question than a game one question who do I think is going to lead the team in sacks and interceptions this year you know you I'm not gonna pick against Ruben Bane I mean Ruben Bane last year as a true freshman true freshman you it took him a few weeks to kind of get his feet wet and emerge got held a lot last year and still managed to be a co-leader on the team with seven and a half sacks last year I think hurricane Bane's going to get to double digits this year and I think he's going to lead the team in sacks as far as interceptions go I am going to give the nod to Mee Powell because he's such a veteran uh the transfer safety out of Washington so I'm gonna say Mech is going to lead the team in interceptions hopefully four five six if he can you know put up cam kinins type of interceptions numbers from the last couple of years but I'm also I'm not forgetting about Mar Keith Williams markei Williams led the team in sackson Fall Camp he had seven Mee Powell had five I just I think Mech is maybe going to be on the field a little bit more I think he's going to play a lot of snaps this year so I'm going to give meech uh the nod for interceptions leader and I'm gonna go hurricane Bane for Sachs leaders but if you guys disagree you want to argue with me comments are open man who's going to lead the team in sacks in interceptions this year uh we get this question from D dude 239 it's a loaded question he admits he says donno question one who's been the most successful Miami head coach of the past 15 years uh I'll answer these rapid fire one by one most successful Miami coach last 15 years I mean I I'm gonna say mark ricked because nobody else in the last 15 years has won 10 games Rick did that and no other Kane's coach of the last decade and a half has uh has won the coastal I know the coastal is no longer a thing but you know back when we had divisions Mark Rick was the only one to to win the coastal so I'm going to go with Mark Rick now I I think Mario christall is going to become the most successful Miami coach of the last 15 years but that's G to it's going to depend on what happens this season your second question if you could inter he says if you could interview five um Legends who would it be um now I've had the privilege um of interviewing a lot of um Legends over the years so the ones that I can think of that I haven't interviewed and I would like to a lot uh Jimmy Johnson I've never interviewed Jimmy I've come close a couple of times so Jimmy Ray Lewis I've never had a chance to interview um Reggie Wayne never had a chance to interview him Andre Johnson believe it or not and believe it or not Ed Reid like I don't know how Ed Reid has eluded me because he was on the Miami staff for a couple years but I've never maybe I've been in a media scrum with him before but I've never had a chance to do like a radio or a podcast interview with Ed Reed so I would I would love to do that as well all right folks um couple questions we're going to answer on the other side how is Miami planning on dealing with that crowd noise can you even prepare for it I think is the bigger question can you prepare for that sort of an environment and what happens if the Gators try to eliminate Reuben hurricane Bane with some extra attention what happens then guys you want to keep it locked right here we're three days away from Miami at Florida we're three days away from week one and for letting that hype machine continue you podcast we're free on YouTube We're part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day so couple of comments that Miami Hurricanes players make this week on Tuesday we spoke to Jaylen Rivers Ruben Bane andz Cooper and Kiko Maui NOA as well and you know Jaylen of course he going to be on that offensive line so when when Miami is about to snap that football it's going to be incredibly loud uh here's what rivers had to say about playing in the swamp he says it's going to be loud we have to have laser focus he said my first ever start he said was when we played Alabama at Mercedes ben Ben Stadium a lot of guys have that experience we are prepared every day when we Face a team that plays in a loud environment like Florida he says you can't let the noise get to you because that's how you ultimately lose so laser focus and I know List Miami is doing everything that they can to get ready for this they have the loudspeakers blaring in practice you know they've been making the the indoor facility and Outdoors at Green Tree they've been pumping it as much noise as possible with the speakers but again we all know like simulating that is only going to get you so far it's different when you're in that moment so it's nice to know you do have players on this roster like two years ago they played at Texas A&M that fits over a thousand over a 100,000 fans like Texas you know uh college station is you know arguably the loudest stadium or one of because I think Michigan and Ohio State have like a hundred, plus as well but you're talking about some of the loudest environments in college football so you do have players who that experience Rivers also talked about that game against Bama you know when he was uh getting his first career start several years ago so hopefully you rely on that experience and hopefully you have practiced everything so tightly for the last couple of weeks that you can deal with this like professionals but we all know it's it's not going to be an easy thing uh I really appreciated this from Miami offensive lineman inz Cooper because you know the the older timers like me you I'm I'm about to turn 40 so I I have like a hatred for the Florida Gators that like a lot of the younger School fans don't because it hasn't been an every year rivalry since the late 80s and so a lot of you don't really think about Florida some of the younger folks as being you know like the same sort of thing as Florida State who Miami always plays every single year but those of us who are a little bit older we remember the hatred for the Gators and ANZ Cooper Miami starting Right Guard uh he revealed that yeah Miami players have been shown videos all week that explain the Miami versus Florida rivalry so this is giving Miami players an appreciation for what this matchup still means to this day and also what it used to mean back when these games were played annually and something that really stood out to Cooper that seems to motivate him a little bit heading into this one is they now know about the infamous Gator flop from 1971 that was when in you know 71 very long time ago Florida Florida was kicking Miami's butts in that game it was like 48-6 or something like Florida was handily beating Miami in that game and then after Miami intercepted a pass Florida Florida wanted to make sure that they got another offensive possession so all of their Defenders flopped to the ground they just completely like fell over let Miami score on purpose because that way they got their quarterback the gator quarterback at that time John Reeves they got him back on the field for another Drive in order for him to set the alltime career passing record which he did so that FL I mean it was it was embarrassing it was Bush League obviously Miami was getting their butts kicked in that game uh you know but those of us who were either old enough to I was not alive in 71 but I learned about it growing up and those who were around in 71 it's something that still kind of sticks with you to this day and guess what uh Miami has won 12 of the last I think 12 of the last 19 meetings with Florida or sorry 12 of the last 17 meetings Miami has beaten Florida uh so you know that that Gator flop I guess is a point of Revenge and now Miami players understand what that was hopefully we don't see any Gator flops this weekend because they want Miami to win this game handily so I like the fact that Miami players now have a little bit of historical context for what this rivalry means and there was another one I can remember I don't remember how long ago this was but I remember reading about this didn't another time separate from the gator flop but like Florida in the old days like they beat Miami in a game where the referees gave Florida a fifth down which is not not a thing five Downs are not a thing Florida got a the referees just gave him an extra down and they beat my if anyone remembers like how that happened and what year that was let me know because I remember reading about that years ago that Florida beat Miami cu the referees gave them a fifth down if anyone remembers that you studied your history let me know in the comments below because that's another one I don't know if Cooper learned about that one as well but I go back to you know one of my keys to the game pass rush keeping Graham Merz under constant duress uh Ruben Bane talked about this that you know if if Florida tries to you know take him out of the game I'm not talking like injuries but if they you know if they double him and just completely try to cancel out Ruben Bane in this game uh he knows he's got other teammates who are ready to step up and make them pay he said quote we are versal on the defensive line this year if they try to eliminate me in the game we have four other players that can come and do the same thing I do we all play the same with power and fast he said so there you go uh and you know I look at I look at other factors that could hopefully play in Miami's favor in this one guys just just the the depth of my Miami's offensive weapons I talked about believing Elijah Royo is going to step up big time in this game Miami also has Riley Williams who can be a weapon even more of a weapon in the passing game than he was last year at tight end and Elijah Lofton who I think Miami can line up in multiple spots the true freshman uh from Xavier Restrepo to Jacobi George to Sam Brown we'll see if it's brown or Isaiah Horton starting but you know what I don't even care who starts they're both really good let them both play rotate in and out Ray Ray Joseph get him some some serious PT and some serious snaps in this game and then Miami's running back rotation honestly Miami's running back rotation could really be what Dooms the Gators now I know that you would expect Florida has addressed their rushing defensive issues from last year they were not good against the run you remember Ray Davis that dude is still scoring so Florida Florida's done what they can to address those issues but until proven otherwise I've got to think a running back rotation from Miami that's going to have Damen Martinez and now a fully healthy Mark Fletcher at the top along with the speed of Chris Johnson the versatility of AJ Allen uh the you know the the Wonder kid that is Jordan Lyall who's had a really good camp Chris Wheatley Humphrey hopefully we see him get a lot of action this year Miami can go five or six deep with really capable competent running backs that's going to be a huge luxury espe running behind a big offensive line so yeah guys we have a lot more content this week we're going to have a a hurricanes Round Table tomorrow tomorrow we're going to get another uh angle of preview on this game I'm gonna be joined by three show favorites Larry blin ran Smith Bruce Warner we're going to go around the table tomorrow we're also gonna have more crossovers with Public Enemy Number One Brandon Olsen from lock on Gators so we're going to cover this game from the Miami angle from the Florida angle on all points in between and we'll talk to you again tomorrow on another episode of Locked on canes we are part of the awesome locked on podcast Network your team every day
