welcome to the Jed up bleeding green podcast I am Michael Palace we are Live on YouTube and uh the Jets officially unofficial sorry unofficial death chart was released today the first one of the off season I figured I'd hop on and give my two cents on what I think of it so far and my biggest takeaways from the UN official depth chart of the 2024 New York Jets the one of the biggest things I noticed is zavier Gibson being the slot starter now Mike Williams is still coming back from an ACL injury so the biggest question I have is is Xavier Gibson slotted into that spot no pun intended or are they going to move Alan Lazard into that spot and bump G Gibson down if Gibson is the guy is your slot primary slot receiver and Alan Lazard gets bumped to quote unquote wide receiver four then then Xavier Gibson with the way he been portrayed by those at Jets camp Xavier Gibson could have a Santana Moss like role for the Jets in 2024 Santan Moss was a primary receiver at one point for the Jets and a Return Man Xavier Gibson with the new kickoff rule the with the new kickoff Rule and as a primary slot receiver if Malachi Corley doesn't overtake him at some time point during camp for the receiver role or they're not just uh having him there for now while Mike Williams is working his way back and then Lazard takes over in the SL as your primary slot if Gibson is your primary slot he could have he could reasonably have a 10,00 yard season for the Jets this year I'm not talking about 1,00 receiving yards I'm not talking about 1,00 kickoff return yards I'm talking about 1,000 allpurpose yards and he could have a good a good amount of touchdowns like five to five to eight touchdowns and when it comes it'll be the yardage will be mostly from kickoff returns so he'll be helping the offense in that regard by establishing a good starting field position for the Jets but if he's your primary slot receiver and he gets 300 to 500 receiving yards and three to five receiving touchdowns and then gets you another three to five touchdowns on kickoff returns and gets you 5 to 600 yards returning that's a nice season that's a great season for the secondy year wide receiver so if he's your primary slot that might he he might have a Santana moss-like role for this Jets team and if Malachi Corley can sit back and learn and then maybe Xavier Gibson moves [Music] into your second receiver role next season and then Malachi Corley becomes your primary slot next season and you have your top three guys as Garrett Wilson Xavier Gibson and Malachi Corley and then you have Xavier Gibson as one of your primary receivers and a kickoff return guy I think that would be something to look forward to and not just for the 2024 NFL season but moving forward for 2025 and Beyond so so how the Jets Envision using ex Xavier Gibson if he is your primary slot and he can give you a Santana Mo like rooll for the Jets that is not that doesn't just bode well for winning now but it sets you up for something in the future especially since Mike Williams is on a one-year contract Alan Lazard probably won't be here Beyond this season cuz his contract will be too much and they can cut him so now you have Corley and Gibson as your air parents and that becomes something to have now you have a foundation now you have Garrett Wilson Bree Hall Malachi Corley Xavier Gibson nice Foundation to work with even if Alan Aaron roders isn't the quarterback next year it's a nice group of players outside of the offensive line for the Jets to build upon and maybe if Jordan Travis is he maybe he's not an elite quarterback but maybe you don't end up needing him to be that Elite quarterback with that group of players maybe they'll be good enough as a unit as a group to lift him up as opposed to having to be the guy that carries the franchise now I know a lot of NFL fans don't want their quarterback to be the guy that needs to be lifted up by the surrounding talent but there aren't enough Elite quarterbacks in any given year in the NFL to not to have your team every team be the quarterback have the quarterback that is the guy and sometimes you have to have a FR a franchise that even if it's for 10 years have your quarterback be the guy that's lifted up by the team around him and if Jordan Travis can can be a solid NFL quarterback that's lifted by the players around him the Jets have something there and it it it bodess well for the Jets Beyond this season what about the defensive side of the football quantz stiggers is the number three cornerback or the the number two cornerback behind s Gardner Brandon Eckles is the number the other number two cornerback because and then you have your nickel back as uh Michael Carter II quantz stiggers is clearly the way he's being reported as performing in Camp the way the way he played in the CFL he is clearly the air apparent to DJ Reid the question is will DJ Reid want to come back to the Jets his contract is up at the end of the season having a guy like stiggers behind him and jerck Bernard Converse has also stepped up his games in switching to corner so now con jerck Bernard conver could be your number three Corner next year and much like with the wide receivers now even if DJ Reid leaves next season it's clear that it seems like the Jets have a pathway to have a guy have a group like guard nurse stickers and JBC be your top three outside corners and then hopefully Michael Carter I second can be your slot corner of the future but stigers is clearly going to be your number three corner for the season and honestly with the way he's being reported as playing in Camp it it would be hard to replace SAU but if DJ Reid were to have to miss time I'm I'm beginning to wonder if the defense would even miss a beat with stiggers at the opposite corner of sace Garder I know that's going to that sounds like that sounds crazy but that's where I believe we are at here with this uh with this with this uh cornerback group so stigers is clearly locked in at number three and could be maybe maybe could be number two by the end of the year with DJ Reid leaving okay so now we talked about the wide receivers earlier we talked about Xavier Gibson being your slot guy now here here are the top four receivers the top five receivers including Mike Williams Garrett Wilson Mike Williams Xavier Gibson Alan Hazard Malachi Corley the question is who is your sixth guy is it Malik Taylor is it IR Charles is it Jason brownley right now IR Charles and Malik Taylor are sitting behind Garrett Wilson and Alan Lazard on the death chart on the outside and brownley is third behind Lazard but the question I have I don't have a real big Takeaway on this one I I have more questions than answers when it comes to the sixth wide receiver because it largely depends on how they want to set up the kickoff return because let's be honest when it comes to the kickoff return you need blockers and it depends on how they're going to whether they're going to go with a a 72 front or an 81 front or a 90 front because most people seem to believe most NFL teams are going to have two wide two return men in the back so and and and allow for one at least one free runner so one of your return men is going to have to be able to block and on the other side on the front half of the kickoff returns a guy like Irv Charles who's who's a good Gunner would with his size could also be a Blocker on kickoff returns and be one of the outside blockers especially if other teams are using corners and safeties on the outside and then linebackers and tight ends in the middle and then then he would be block he would be assigned in in manto man spots which probably won't happen much because if you have two line if you have two returners you can't really do manto man against 10 guys cuz then you're guaranteed to have well you're going to have a Free Runner anyway but then you have to decide which Runner you're going to allow to be the freeer runner in man coverage but when it comes to the sixth wide receiver I think it should be probably herb Charles but there's a lot of questions on how the Jets are going to operate their their kickoff returns that is going to determine the the the sixth wide receiver because you have linebackers that are going to block you have tight ends that are going to block and a guy like IRB Charles can be an outside Blocker on kickoff turns so there's there's only there's only so many spots that can go around and if the the Jets probably want to carry six wide receivers especially if herb Charles is going to be an integral part to special teams not just punt returns with kickoff returns he's probably your lock for number six that's the show for today I will be back on Wednesday have a good one a
