Keisean Nixon: 'I just want the ball, I don't care how we get it'

Hall of Fame Game I don't think I ever seen a Hall of Fame game we be practicing yeah we be in meetings and stuff so uh I'm sure I'm see the highlights on Instagram and stuff like that but I don't really care for it are you intrigued by seeing how other teams are going to do it obviously you practice what you plan to do and it's going to be a fluid situation uh yeah I'm excited uh I just want the ball I don't care how we get it um I just want the ball I was that meeting with the rest like Eric was saying there was a couple gray areas Ki off what did you learn your uh I think everybody's learning it I think even the refs I don't think they know how they're going to call it just like uh I think all the coaching and stuff are learning how they're going to coach it um my biggest takeaway is uh they got to give me the ball all smiles with that you've said in the past I don't want any touchbacks I've never fa caught anything in my life right when when they're trying to force action that's right up your rally right yeah that's what I want um give me a chance to do what I want to do uh last sure I mean should have had more returns but I got to force it so now I don't have to force it it's going to be common um I'm excited though I sure you talked about the pride you took a big Nam All Pro a second time at kick returner how rare that is have you ever given any thoughts to what it would be like to chase a third one of those honors uh yeah that's definitely uh a goal in mind now um just like going all pro in the slot too also um you know I set my expectations really high and for myself and uh it was also one of my goals yeah are you on Kick coverage too or you just on return um I don't know we'll see week one it's a little too much inside so you catch the ball outside the Return Game 20 you get the ball at the 4 right so put border line you know as much as you want to return it you still make sure your feet are outside the 20 and catch it or I think I think if they don't make it to 20 I think they blow it dead so I think it doesn't matter they're not going to let me return it if it doesn't make get past the 20 so right but if it's close you can let it come a little bit or I think if it doesn't if it doesn't make the 20 is dead I don't think it's either or I think if it goes over the 20 I can Ste it but if it's before it's going to be dead whether my feet or wherever it's at Kean what's it uh been like with this defense uh this training camping where do you feel like you guys are at um I like this defense a lot um I played in this defense uh my third year with the Raiders and we went to the playoffs in this defense and uh we're a lot more talented than that team I played with three years ago um I'm really excited I'm really excited for this defense we flying around playing physical and fast it's really what it is with your position what do you like the most say it again with your specific position what do you like most about the defense um it's no thinking um last few years we had to think a lot um just really reading react play Fast physical it's really what I want to do and they allowing me to do what I do it seems pretty Universal everyone in this Locker likes the defense loves the defense loves the style if everyone loves it so much why why don't all 32 teams do this is it tailored to your specific skill sets you guys have or what is it not every coach wants to play this defense um last few years in Super Bowls errors um this defense has been in the Super Bowl the Niners run it um Rams run it I mean I don't think the Rams run it some other teams run it uh Cincinnati runs it it's just everybody's preference you know coaches can't control what they bringing here they just run this DC and it fits our style of defense and the the Personnel we have in Defensive Backs here coach was talking about all the defensive backs and how the wealth of them wealth of defensive backs makes them a really po defense can you talk about your role in the defensive backs here on the team and how they can make the defense better this year my role on the defensive backs yeah the defensive um well I play nickel play slot Corner um that's my role um do nothing get better at my role and Excel and like I said my expectations is high for myself my standards is high and uh the standard for our defense is high so if I live up to my own expectations I'm G live up to the standard of the defense are you a guy that writes down in goals yeah they on my on my on my mirror at home I see them every morning um got 10 goals I ain't going to tell you where they are but I make sure I check them out when I accomplish all my goals I map out some more nipy hustle how many did you did you how many did you hit last year all of them did you did I yeah M up some more got a new deal new new goals so all new 10 are new goals then absolutely how often did you hit all 10 was last year I've hit all I've hit all 10 past two years so we will see is there an expectation that you are going to take more to the house this year with this new um I think my expectation is always that um you know it's hard I can't always say that because uh teams scheme me up you know what I'm saying they know what's come what come with kicking me the ball um that's really it I don't really got control over that I don't really have expectation how many touchdowns I'm going have but the goal is to strike it the main thing is getting the Jordan love the best field position he can get but if I take it to the house I'll take it to the house you think it's harder to keep it away from you with these rules that they have to kick it uh I just feel like some way somehow they going to figure out how to not give me the ball as just what come with being a guy I understand right they kick it into the end zone or out of the endone co correct right yeah so they have to judge whether it's worth kicking it to you 8 yard deep or if I catch at the 20 you think I'll make it to the 30 I feel the same way can you talk about working with K just smile yeah I like Lil KK uh Lil KK he gonna be all right um you know he just any young player you got to get confidence U I think when he got a pick his Jordan love the other day that boost his confidence up got a little Swagger to him uh but he'll be all right just what come with this league uh it's going to Humble you early and you just got to learn how to fight through it do you feel like like he's kind of similar maybe to you and some yeah he be trying to copy my swag he he trying to copy me so but it's not it's not a bad thing uh he gonna be all right though KK got a lot of confidence in himself he got a little physicality to him uh smart football player play Penn State I think foure starter so played a lot of big games he'll be all right do you kind of relate back to how he felt on draft day where I know he was drafted but he was one of the last couple picks went on do you relate to him in that way uh yeah absolutely uh my little my situation was a little different I was in a neck brace coming out of the draft process so uh I kind of knew where I was going to fall I knew I wasn't I already knew so uh I think his situation a little different but the earlier like I told him the early you take it on the chin and just deal with it um the more your career it's not it's not always about where you get drafted it's about what you doing get there um I think it was 33 Corners drafted when I came in the league I've never been cut and I've never been on practice squad been on after roster my whole career um so I don't think that Defense matters that Jordan's back doing team reps and whatnot how does that make you guys better as a defense uh he's the highest played player in the league uh it makes us a lot better um our defense is really good and uh having Jordan and going against him every day does nothing but get us better just like uh me going against J re and the slot every day and Wicks just like uh the outside guys get Rome and U Christian Watson even Bo and Heath and all those guys uh the whole goal is just to get better in Camp and competing at a high level with each other is going them to get us better Coach Appley was talking about yesterday he appreciates the Buy in from the defense into his defense what allowed you guys to buy in so quickly and was it about him that you guys bought into uh the defense works with our Personnel um and we we saw it early in OTAs and coming to camp we was confident uh hav is aggressive guy like I've I've said it before and he's a he's a backend guy also so he he most of his calls come from the back end and as a backend guy that's what you want I've never had that in my career and uh make you play harder as a coach what does he do that makes you guys buy in what does he do when you know we're not around what what are we not seeing the aggressive um you know what I'm saying uh when you set the standard as a coach your guys live up to it or they don't and we living up to it and uh he hold us accountable but he levels up a lot and um has a good dude I like him a lot what's it like playing with Eric St excuse me Eric Wilson and just kind of the value that that brings when you have a guy that can fit into so many different things where it's defensively or what he does on special team um I've been there um he's a vet you know what I'm saying he's a he's a real Pro and he approaches the game whether he's a starter or he's not he always going to be ready and uh I've been there before when you know what I'm saying you just get thrown in you got to be ready he always lives up to the challenge but he's a pro at the end of the day his way take care of his body the way he bring the mindset he does every day and uh he work hard I know you guys don't listen to stuff on the outside world but there's a lot of people thinking davan's going to have a breakout year year two okay you just said you go up against SL all the time why is why is what got a mindset um I think a lot of them dudes do I don't think it's just him but I think them guys come out and compete with us um I think we got the we're top one of the top DB units in the league right now especially adding X and and young guys and U they just come and compete it's really what it is he got dog in him we going to bring that dog out of him Evan Williams really did some early run what have you liked and seen about him playing with the ones how is he showing himself as his Ries I call him Evan Mahomes uh he looked like him but uh Evan smart guy smart kid I like him a lot cuz he's from California so I got a little Cali love with him finally I've never really had California boys in my back end with me and uh he a ball player you know the game and he has a game of the feel right um also smart kid though so I mean that that takes you a long way to put you in position if you know the defense learn the defense early so but he's a Nor Cal you're still Cal yeah still California though and there's no beef there no you're not like once you from California you're from California
