Introduction how's it going everybody welcome back to the flagrant talk sports podcast it's Moses here longside his co-host Isaiah gestner what's up everybody today we got a little bit of breaking news not uh it's going to be a few days old at the time of you guys seeing this but the Pack 12 is back uh The Pac-12 Returns: Initial Thoughts we have breaking news uh kind of out of nowhere that um four legitimate teams from the Mountain West are joining the remaining two teams in the Pack 12 the Washington State Cougars and the Oregon State Beavers so Z kinda uh Shook Me Up yester uh yesterday when I saw the news yeah um what do what you what are your initial thoughts on I mean I I'll would just say it's kind of fitting that the pack 12 has this massive uh groundbreaking bit of news for their conference drop at night it it's just fitting uh that the Pack 12 after dark you know the the night events that happens that we get this bombshell of your Boise State Broncos and to be quite honest you could argue the four best teams in the Mountain West all getting plucked and plopped into the six-pack which is what we got now so I I mean for you as a a Boise State Bronco I I want to hear your thoughts and and kind of if you're excited what are you feeling about this this big move uh you know I was shocked but um I'm now having a couple day or so to sit on it and think about it I am extremely excited for the future of Boise State um and all all the other schools that joined as well um obviously uh the last few years we've played WSU in uh basketball specifically but you know we're playing them this year in football some of these other schools are playing them in football um same with Oregon State so um and they've been really close competitive games uh teams in similar regions um easy travel for fans so you know maybe these rivalries can build over the years as these teams play out and just uh I was listening to the athletic ctor Jeremiah dicki of Boise State uh yesterday he had a press conference and just everything he was saying it was about uh what's next it's the big Boise State slogan but what's next for Boise State we're always looking to build go to the next step um he wasn't guaranteeing success with this move which there is that uh definite side of it but I think the upside outweighs that dark shadow you can't live in doubt you got to see it through with an opportunity like this I think and not even just for basketball and football he was talking every sport all the other sports cross country uh volleyball soccer every sport maybe even bringing baseball back that's a definite conversation because all these schools have solid baseball programs but it's just it's really exciting what the future holds and um we'll see where it goes but I I I love the move personally but they got a few things that they need to finish up too make sure it's set in stone so Y and those are my initial thoughts but yeah I just to throw out there to the audience for people who don't know the way that the NCAA works is you need to have eight teams in your conference for it to remain eligible obviously the pack two added four new teams it's a pretty big step uh so now you're at six but you still need two more pivoting over to the Mountain West still sitting at eight to schools if no one leaves and if they don't add anyone the Mountain West is still the Mountain West you won't see any any tweaks however we could not be done uh the Pack 12 certainly isn't they're gon to look they need to add at least two more teams in the next two years uh when they were given that that grace period when everyone left them um but they stuck it out they said let's rebuild let's see what schools we got and and you see your Broncos Colorado State Fresno State San Diego State I mean it's crazy to be in this era of conference realignment where you're getting teams just shifting in the blink of an eye kind of what it feels like of hey here's four new teams in the Pack 12 just here it is they're moving from the out and West and here's that I do you know the the big question they need to add at least two more I think the Pack 12 will look to get aggressive and try and get to at least 10 teams um but as someone who's grown up in Washington state his entire life as someone who uh grew up with the Pack 12 has so many fond memories of it and teams and things like that that mean to me I am so happy that it's not going to fade and that it's going to come back it's going to look very very different from the way it grew I grew up watching watching it but the fact that pack 12 is still here West Coast ball is still here I I think this is a a really exciting opportunity for all of these schools so yeah I'm I'm excited um but we can pivot Who Else Joins? now because as I said they still need at least at least two more schools right so what do you think are there some teams you're feeling do you think the the Pack 12 could add some more teams from the Mountain West and then kind of sync them like what are some of the next steps that you see for the Pack 12 yeah you know I'm uh I'm personally very surprised that a Utah State wasn't included in this bunch I feel like they are uh probably the school highest on the Mountain West list of hey like where's our invite um especially with their resume in basketball the last few years being ranked nationally um their football team has uh pretty solid program as well I'm not too familiar with all the other sports but they're a well-known program in similar region uh with the similar skill level I would say so I feel like they are definitely an option to be looked at um also another team in the Mountain West UNLV its location its Athletics as well it's funding that it's going to get um I think they would be another great option um but that would leave the Mountain West kind of in that gray period like you said they need to replace um I would maybe look at the Big Sky maybe like a a Montana or they can move up to the Mountain West or elev pool I didn't even think of that yep maybe an Eastern or something could uh move its way up to the Mountain West so um those are two of the main teams that I was thinking could join but I I will say too in a situation where any of because Mount the Mountain West is at the minimum right they've got eight schools if the Pack 12 plucks one or two more or if a different conference plucks it then the Mountain West would also be awarded that two-year grace period to rebuild their conference so it it wouldn't just get disbanded because they lose the teams in the same way the Pack 12 was um I think it's an interesting spot for the Pack 12 I personally if I were a betting man I would say the Mountain West moves are done at least to the Pack 12 there's one team I'll talk about in the Mountain West for our next segment that I have a theory on uh moving somewhere else I just think if another one of those Mountain West schools was going to move to the Pack 12 I think they would have done it with these other four schools it is just my mindset um but you brought up a great point I mean Utah State specifically in basketball has been a year in year out tournament team and not just one that sneaks in it's represented the Mountain West pretty well in the past few seasons so I I could see movement there um obviously New Mexico the great thing is all of these teams are regionally fit to fit the Pack 12 so they've got that going um but I've got some other teams to bring up here are the the first two obviously left the Pack 12 in the first place this is kind of like the the girl who breaks up with you and then she gets with the new guy and is like man he's way smarter than you he makes more money than you he takes me out on dates he opens the door for me he does all of this sweet and amazing stuff that you never did for me I'm in such a better spot and then they've been dating for a year and they break up and then you get a hey he are you okay you good that's what Stanford and Cal could do in them Pack 12 that whole long story is setting that up it hasn't been the prettiest move to the ACC and I think there's a lot obviously travel and financials and all of these things that we knew would be problems yep are problems surprise um I would be curious to see though if the Pack 12 is a little petty maybe they're like hey we don't want you back you left like I think there would be this weird kind of tension on like you and every other school screwed us over if we're WSU in Oregon State we don't want you back um but there are two teams familiar to the conference familiar to the travel fit geographically that I think make at least some sense to join the Pack 12 and make it an eight team conference I would I would definitely see this as something happening down the line I don't know if this is going to fit into the 2-year period that just because of their recent moves but I would love to see these two teams back in the Pack 12 and as you said it has been a little bit of rough sailing for them in these new conferences uh kind of as we expected as they were a little bit on the lower end in the Pack 12 especially these last few years but I I uh not mad at the the picks yeah I I think the ACC is just one they're going to look at I I think going to set their eyes on the ACC and see kind of can we get a straggler or two out of there maybe and and obviously these are just the easiest ones they make the most sense but then I've got some other ones that make it really interesting with the American yep we've talked about it you and I plenty about respect for Memphis the respect for UTSA and when you're talking about these incredible schools like a Boise State uh who aren't this power five dominant Big 10 Big 12 school but are consistently good across Sports it would be a dream come true to have Memphis Boise State WSU all those schools all together yeah under one umbrella uh same goes for UTSA specifically in football uh they've got a game against Texas on the day you're going to see this video so we'll see with that I I just think there's some interesting moves with the American that they could shift their eyes towards before looking at a Stanford or a cow yeah I I definitely agree with that um especially considering how much uh some of these teams are being pitted against each other right now in the new 12 team format uh that would kind of settle things there with the more head-to-head matchups between these teams which would be awesome um but I I love I think these would be great additions to the Pack 12 as well obviously it would be the same travel thing but these teams are getting it done and it seems like it's trending toward the future yeah especially the Florida team but yeah that that's the dead like least likely for me and it is for the reason you said travel I mean it would be border they would just kind of stick out like a sore thumb yeah and the that's kind of the big thing with a lot of these American schools is you can't just bring Memphis because you would want a couple of schools in that region that can travel easily because if Memphis is the only school where it's like I've got to go to Washington State I've got to go to Idaho I've got to go to Oregon I've got to go to like all of that it might be you know for the better if you can have some schools in that region that fit um so South Florida is kind of the long shot but due to the prestige that they have as a program and kind of what the Pack 12 is looking to build on a school level and athletic level they do fit what it looks like the Pack 12 is trying to make 100% so we'll see with that those are are six ones that I at least am monitoring kind of the American as a whole um but yeah I I'm really curious to see those next steps because the Pack 12 will still need those two schools at a minimum to shepher in and uh and remain at the level that they're at so and they're G to get it done there's no way they announced all this and they're not going to be able to find two more schools and it just Falls um it's it's going to happen so we'll see where the cards play but I'm excited yeah th this was the hardest part I would imagine getting those four schools in and saying hey we've got six teams it's not just WSU and Oregon State like Hey we're trying to keep the conference alive it's like no we're we're gonna be fine you know like we we only need two more schools and with the way realignment works every team it feels like is in that kind of transfer portal um yeah so I I don't think they will have a problem at all um but now moving on what's next What's Next For The Mountain West? for the Mountain West uh your former conference now uh what do you what do you think what do you feel are the next steps for them um like I said maybe looking at some of those FCS Big Sky type schools uh I didn't mention Idaho is another one who is especially in football this season has been competing basketball has been solid um it's gonna be tough to recover you're losing four of your most prominent schools um could be arranged in any different order but four very uh topheavy schools in this conference so it's it's going to be tough to Pivot but there's still a conference that they still have a competitive uh set of teams and schools um so maybe they don't add and just call it and hope and pray that none of other teams leave but I'm interested to hear your theory I'm I'm not sure where you're going yeah I I totally agree with you there they have the benefit of eight schools so they again like I said they don't need to do a thing as long as no one leaves yep but I said there was a team that I'm interested in and it's Air Force and the reason I'm interested in Air Force is if this is the opportunity Air Force is looking for to join the American and you could then have air force and navy under the same umbrella for a school and you would have the commander-in-chief trophy Under One Roof you would be able to have that rivalry in the same conference and if that happens obviously then Mount the Mountain West is like okay who are we going to have to fill that spot what are we going to do next so I think this opens the door where you know the Mountain West is still a good conference but you took kind of the cream of the crop away from it it's gone and I think that could open the door Hawaii is also a really difficult school to Shep in with you know travel and paying for that and the financing of that that yep I think it's tough for them to leave um because of the financial hit that is to whoever the conference is that's absorbing them but I'm not counting out I mean listen if the four schools leaving doesn't at least make your your ears perk about what could happen next I don't know what will yeah but I I'm really curious to see what these next steps are for the Mountain West for sure yeah so we'll see I'm very Closing Thoughts excited to have the Pack 12 back I'm excited to see what the Mountain West will do um I think in a dream world in a Dream World for the Pack 12 I put Memphis in there I put UTSA in there I put I would love to see Stanford and cowb but Memphis and UTSA in there would be yeah that that conference all of a sudden is really fun if the new look Pack 12 Maybe not immediately but the 10 teams are that we could be cooking we could be really good could be a rebirth yes that that is really exciting I'm excited to see too I it doesn't really have any implications now but what does this mean for uh the college football playoffs yeah because they're not a power five school conference yeah yes thank you um but with the additions if this is what it looks like they're certainly going to try and make a case of like hey these are all quality yeah like we want a seat at the table too will that happen only time we tell yeah um yeah big moves excited to see what happens next obviously more shakeups in the Pack 12 but the Mountain West could definitely follow suit with some more moves 100% it's uh it's going to be an exciting next few seasons without a doubt um that's everything I have Mo any Outro / SOTP any last thoughts to throw in nope it's all it's all I got awesome well you know what that means song of the podm mo let the people uhuh for the college it came out where it was like oh yeah this is going to be in football montages NFL NCW like it it just felt like it was made for it so yeah love the pick there uh mine is just glazing uh I could have
