[Music] welcome to the west Texas town of El Paso the sunbowl and home to the UTEP miners and it's always a pleasure to come out this way and we are certainly excited about the game we have in store what an exciting matchup we have in store for you this afternoon built around the pageantry tradition and everything that makes college football great as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the Utah State Aggies taking on a team from the AAC The utap Miner for EA Sports college football ree Davis with you alongside David Pollock and Jesse Palmer time to get this game started Utah State lined up ready to deliver the opening kickoff he'll bring it out it's Henderson returner so the UTF miners return team certainly didn't do the offense any favors there and when you have a quarterback like this guy the entire offense feeds off of him David a everybody feeds off of his energy and the whole playbooks open because you can trust on him he's Dependable Palmer he's also one of those guys if he gets in a good Rhythm watch out this dude and he is snowed under sacked at the seven well it wasn't great field position to start start with and it's getting worse now the defense gets a sack they're getting aggressive up the field they get to the QB and they're sending a message from the gun the give looking for room squeezes ahead for a couple they'll get it out to the nine I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the ball so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little ones set the tone stay balanced it's complete to the right and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the Stop and the miners decide to punt it away the punter going to get his first work of the afternoon he's got great [Applause] speed touchdown Utah State the Special Teams proving worthy of their name now that is a play that will get your Sidelines into the game with that touchdown and you could see once he left everybody in the dust and he was going to the house the sidelines going nuts what a big time play to take the lead defense did its job now special teams coming through in a big way he's brought down at the 16 would have been much better off to take the touch back UTF has the ball and the minor offense ready to go to work last time David it was 1 two three kick yeah last drive that three and out sometimes that puts your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think David too predictable that last Drive they got to do something here to get this defense on their heels the playaction fake and the quarterback is knocked down back at the 13 playaction pass success has a lot to do with selling that fake you could tell defense was not buying it got in the back field got the big play on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose downfield grabbed over the middle it's D and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down the miners will send out the punt unit he might just try to keep it away from this guy after a house call came after the first punt return's going to get it up around mid field he'll be down at the 49 yd line so the Utah State Aggies offense will take the field for the first time and what a great matchup we have of two highly productive Runners David and I like the competition aspect of this reach like I'm watching what you're doing on the other side and I'm going to prove I'm a better running back than you both these guys are looking to be the man today and both guys Can Go the Distance right these two running backs seem to get better as the game goes on so which defense can be more physical step up and at least slow the other guy down they'll throw it on first [Applause] down snags it slippery slide find his way and ran away from the crowd into the end zone touchdown Aggie and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown Utah State 14 he'll take the return try to get better field position really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 UTF has the ball the offense ready to go back to work to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense it's first and 10 from the 38 yd [Music] line he'll put the tight end in motion out of the gun they give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one lost one on that last it's second and [Applause] 11 he'll do it himself and he finds Some solid space makes a nice game before the defense is able to stop him nice job there by the QB on hisone because he's watching the D lineman and he knows he has to keep the football and then he right away takes it up field to get some positive Ys to the ground to try to pick up the first Russell to the ground after picking up the first down you wonder now on offense have they found something in the Run game finally it's been tough for them to get the Run game going but they picked up a nice gain on that last one let's see if they go back to it they'll run it out of the shotgun he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and here comes play number six of the drive l l they go to the ground just a solid stop by this sophomore yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the Tipo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge the quarter comes to a close Utah state has the lead really strong performance so far to be able to build a lead here in the first period as we look at the stats a large dominated the first quarter and built a nice lead to get started a third down play to get the quarter [Applause] [Music] started back to throw it's Dennis firing to the right complete and Sh tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker and the miners send out the punt unit [Applause] signals for the fair Catch and that's where they'll put it in play just outside the 20 Utah State sing Against offense back onto the field they've jumped on them executing at a high level and up 14 nothing David this is the exact start you wanted I mean offense is playing great defense has gotten stops you're in a position now Palmer to put the hammer down and get a three possession lead I'm really impressed with their physicality on both sides of the ball early in this one they've been winning in the trenches so here on offense keep running the football and show your dominance a solid pick up there before the defense is able to make the stop I like the decision there in the RPO game too guys I only only got a couple of yards but that play is going to open up bigger opportunities throwing the football down the field in the RPO game too so keep handing it off to this guy let him see what he can do and when the defense gives you the look to t hold the football and then finally throw it that's when you take advantage he goes out of bound but there is is a flag on the field let's see what this one's about we'll repeat the previous down but this time the offense has 10 more yards it has to cover line getting set on second down he's looking to throw he lofs one down the sideline catch and stride inside the 15 run out of bounds after the long game but they've got it now first and goal and that big gain on the last one has them threatening from inside the 10 makes the grab on the left that completion will take it inside the four and the offense is threatening the Big Fellas coming out in the goal line defense the give to the tail back into the end zone he goes touchdown Utah State Utah ling up for the Pat and the extra point is true and the lead balloons to 21 one about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown UT 2ut fielded In The End Zone it's Henderson stopped at the 29 but b a little running room after coming out of the end zone UTF has the ball and the minor offense ready to go to work they've gotten nothing done so far and they already find themselves in a three possession hole Jesse Yeah yeah and as a head coach you're wondering what didn't I say what didn't I do to get my team ready to go because we look like we're sleepwalking nothing went well in the first quarter just say refresh like let's try to find a way now chip into this lead try to make it somewhat manageable when you get to the half nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry that linebacker was a heat seeking missile and the heat that he sought was the ball carrier yeah great job great field linebackers are making all the calls in the defense and understanding when I need to come through that Gap and come through with bad intentions those guys are usually 245 lbs of heat seeking miss a completion but not quite enough for the first down third down coming for this offense they've got the screen set up on the move it's the third they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some L for a running back the miners are on the Move off the play fake on first down wants to throw he finds a dead spot in the middle he is down at the one a terrific run after the throw and catch and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide on these situations you know the physical ground game comes into play inside the 5 yd line and they match the intensity nice job everybody flying around to the football making the tackle for a loss nice job by this defense let's it Fly and it's incomplete as he was trying to make the play in the back corner of the end zone and that is a huge missed opportunity for your quarterback You' got got your guy wide open in the end zone you're not under pressure you just got to hit him that ball got away that's one he'd like to have back another incompletion on third down they'll send out the kicker here and this will be a short one from about 21 yds out it is G so after putting three on the board the kickoff team is out there ready to boot it away on the move from inside is five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Utah state has it back ready to go to work on offense this has been an impressive first half and Jessie they love nothing better than to attack another one on before the break and why would they want to stop at this point everything they've dialed up they've been able to execute throwing and running the football B and how critical is it for this defense to get a stop down right now now before the half they can create some momentum on their side by getting a stop before the half they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one there's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half this defense has kept them backed up now one more stop and they can get off the field on Third and long from the gun wants to pass looking deep down the right side and that'll be incomplete they certainly weren't afraid to take a shot there and now it's fourth down this guy is seriously not going to go for it this close to his own End Zone I mean he does have a punter doesn't [Music] he on fourth down going to the air he's not afraid to go deep brings it down on the right side he's Off to the Races touchdown at and once he got away from the D they had no shot at catching him the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown Drive score 2 he'll bring it back from inside his five and the returner will be brought down and your miners will take over UKF has the ball the offense ready to go back back to work they find themselves in a pretty deep hole here but maybe a chance to grab a little momentum and regroup at halftime yeah a big chance like this is this is an opportunity this is the biggest opportunity in front of them in the game right now you got to get some points on the board you got to create something positive Jesse there hasn't been a whole lot to be positive about in the first half if I'm playing quarterback I'm locating my go-to guy receiver who can I count on one-on-one to go and make me a play maybe even one on two who can go up catch the ball get us some yards and get us some points to the air it's Dennis gets it out quickly there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer they've got four receivers out there two on either side on second and three he's looking to throw a strike downfield and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up and they spike it to stop the clock they'll line up for a second down play he's looking to throw unloads to the wide out what a job to lay out and make the catch man I love those guys that are willing to put their body on the line and he does it right here man just lay he's out that Ball's coming in you can see it from several yards out making that play laying out keeping the football from touching the turf great concentration great effort by the receiver defense is there to make the stop but he's got the first down and they'll have it first and go with the six corners right up on that line of [Applause] scrimmage good job to avoid the negative play and just get rid of that thing how about the difference of weak makes for this QV last week man the completion percentage way down just wasn't consistent wasn't in good Rhythm right now looks like he's in total control and this offense is moving at a way better Pace looks like a completely different team from last week that pressure got to him and he just had to Chuck it out of bounds got to give the defense a lot of credit man cuz they've come into this hostile environment they've quieted the crowd down with some of the plays they're making they've got a nice lead right here and they're making it hard for this quarterback and defense wraps up the first half by taking it to the quarterback and getting the sack so now on fourth down they'll try to salvage at three and just get points before halftime smashes it between the uprights first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update thanks guys one of the best atmospheres in football and we've got a fun one from El Paso and we have to start this halftime breakdown by addressing the play of this Elite wide receiver this is clearly a young man who once he's finished playing on Saturdays he's going to be playing on Sundays the kid has different gears he has a knack for finding gaps in the defense and I can't remember a college player with that kind of catch radius and with that let's send it back to the guys at one of the most picturesque settings in the game sunbowl Stadium [Music] and the miners will try to kick this one deep to get things underway in the second half on the run from inside his own five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 guys the Utah State offense about to give it another goal this offense has really been clicking in the game so far Jesse no doubt everything their play caller is dialing up these guys offensively have been able to go out and execute yeah and it's just maintaining the lead keep doing what you've been doing you got a big lead let's just keep piling it on until they find an answer toss sweep right at the 35 he's open finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down he's going to pass makes that one pay off and they finally get him down at the 38 it'll be first down and the agies come to the line with a fresh set of downs he'll come out throwing on first down he puts a lot of air under it down the sideline and the DB right with him to knock it away nice job in coverage there offense trying to take a shot down field the defender able to tip that one up in the air and force it incomplete maybe a little frustrated after that last incompletion it's second and 10 from the 38 pass the sticks and he may get more touchdown Utah State and the beat down has ensued and this offense looking more and more like themselves this is what we're accustom to seeing last week more of a blip right 0 and one to start the season kind of had some bad vibes some bad pojo bounced right back putting up a ton of points and this one is all but over one and one is here for this team I imagine he's going to get an earful on the sideline after bringing it out of the end zone and being knocked down at the 11 opening play of this drive comes from the 11 trying to start the drive with a pass and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down and the big tight end a lot of times that's a bigger Strike Zone a bigger dude and you could tell they put the hit on him and that ball came out and it came to the turf nice job playing physical by this defense and that pass picked off couldn't find much breathing room to return it but the interception has this offense in business at the 2 seven line gets set first down he's looking to throw it they're trying to get to it he scrambled forward and got a few and turned that into a positive play I think he did a really good job first of all keeping his eyes down field you could see he wanted to throw the football but when it's not there Don't Force It tuck it down get some positive yards and he'll be taken down but he does have enough for the first first down well the defense is on their heels right now they're going to have to find a way to stop this guy when he's got aead of steam boy he is hard to bring down they're going to ride this running back and it's really nice whether it's RPO or not is having a defensive line that Stones the offensive line takes away the gaps it doesn't matter what your read is if you're winning up front on that defensive line operating in the Red Zone here on second down hand off from the gun and he's swallowed up at the line of scrimmage by the big defensive tackle offense tries to go RPO and hand off to the running back but how about the defense up front they're just too Stout they're not getting moved anywhere and they're able to make a big time play pulls and fires complete touchdown Aggie and the punishment has been extended they'll try to add another to their lead and with the extra point they pushed the lead out a little further a very efficient five playay scoring drive and they cap things off with a nyd touchdown pass coming out with it it's Henderson that gamble did not pay off as they bring him down at the 12 yd line UTF has the ball and the minor offense ready to go to work after that last pick David they really need to take care of the ball this time no doubt and Palmer know what spur said to you on the sideline after a pick do that again and you'll be right here beside me for the rest of the game you got to go out you got to call your plays and I hope this coaching staff isn't going to be afraid to throw it this drive dropping back it's Dennis throws to the wide out complete to the right stopped at the 28 but a big 15yd pickup gives him some Breathing Room offense has it at the 28 on first down [Applause] grab behind the line it's Henderson stopped at the 43 after the 15yd pickup first and 10 cornner showing press they want to be physical here the quick out oh he's so hard to get on the ground he's got room he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down a new set of TS after the completion they'll throw it on first down quickly out to the tight end good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four nice quick throw there and it's so important for quarterbacks to be able to find a rhythm and to be comfortable and confident you want to just get the ball out quickly make it an accurate and easy throw and you can tell that these two guys they rep that play in practice all the time is now showing up here on the miners will have it first and [Music] [Applause] 10 from the gun the running back tries to hit the hole didn't get much on first down it's second and nine5 the quarter comes to a close Utah state has the lead well guys so far this has been a massive beat down and it would appear the biggest challenge is what kind of Records can they set as we have a look at the third quarter stats so will the beat down continue or is this a comeback for the ages in store we'll see as we start the fourth offense about to reel off its seventh play of the drive to the air it's Dennis finds a tight end and that was some kind of collision between a couple of big bodies there and he stopped from getting the first down already in Chip Shot field goal range at the 21 but this third and short they're still thinking touchdown a little too anxious along that offensive line that'll be a false start the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty they're close enough for a makeable field goal from the 26 but they'd love to convert this third in Long from the gun wants to pass unleashes one and they fail to hook up on third down and that's just the kind of game it's been for this quarterback in this offense you got a great game planing all week long you're watching it throughout practice you think you're going to have a chance to light up the scoreboard but they're just not able to hook up you got to give this touchdown utap made the grab and finished the deal in the end zone and good for them they they put together a drive they they got a touchdown it's been a bad day I mean this is a day they're going to want to forget they're getting destroyed but at least you get some positive vibes maybe maybe finish this game on a little bit behind note a little bit almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown he'll start the return inside is five he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 2 three Utah State sending its offense back onto the field what a good mix of plays keeping that defense off balance last time David and Reese they don't know if it's run or if it's pass they got him right where they wanted this defense doesn't know how to react from getting punched in the mouth on that last drive so in this next Drive David I think you keep running the football because that sets up the play action it sets up the RPO game and then you keep this defense guessing delay of offense that is a completely avoidable penalty the quarterback just went into brain loock and lost track of the play clock here's this offense with a fresh set of [Applause] downs strong firm tackle the defense is going to have to have a plan they're going to need linebackers replacing these defensive ends that are crashing down because this quarterback is dynamic and on these Zone read type plays he's going to get downfield and downfield quickly like he did on that last play and they do a really good job not as easy as it looks to get those blocks and he picks up the first down new set of downs after that completion at the 45 on it way hits the accelerator to the right touchdown Utah State and the puming has started points points and more points this offense has had their way they just keep their foot on the gas keep putting up points keep putting up touchdowns and you know what this is one of those stats days you look back and you're like that guy had 12 touchdowns on the year Well four or five of them might have been in this game fielded In The End Zone it's Henderson stopped at the 17 and he's probably second guessing that return UTF has the ball the offense ready to go back to work first snap of this drive will come from their own 17 looking to throw it's Dennis and that pass is intercepted really nice play on the pick was looking for a little more yardage but great field position at the 34 and as a defensive lineman late in the game man when you know it's passed you're pinning your ears back trying to get to the quarterback and DBS are trying to do this pad them stats get the int touchdown Aggies and The Stomping has commen and this always is the debate of where you fall it's your job to stop me or I should get conserved CU this offense obviously has had themselves a day and apparently their day is not over they're going to continue to keep scoring and the defense better do something about it he'll bring it out it's Henderson not nearly as much as he' hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 UTF has the ball and the minor offense ready to go to work well let's see if this drive goes better than the last one they were in and out quickly after the quick pick David yeah first play big mistake man now let's get this offense in a little bit of a rhythm maybe before you open it up again or do you trust him right away uh he seems to me like the guy maybe that just needs to kind of get into the flow of the game so maybe you get the running game going got a lot of room to the right the 10 touchdown you tap and once he found open space the man might as well start playing number and this has been a rough day for this offense and finally some good things to happen build some momentum maybe for the future you know that's that's the way that coaches spin it when you're getting beat up and you're getting destroyed like listen let's find something for the future let's keep fight let's keep working this team's done that put some points on the board so it's not all bad not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Utah state has it back ready to go to work on offense leaves it with the back keeps it moving for a three- yd gain to the 24 and these rpos always put the defense in bind but listen you give up the Run they get a short little gain no harm no foul spreads out four receivers trips right a single receiver to the left on second and seven he's brought down but there's a flag on the play Let's see if it's stands holding amazing how many times an offensive holding penalty will stall a drive we'll see if the offense can overcome it second down coming [Applause] up holds and fires complete to the right and a good job of coverage by that defense just a short pick up not exactly the ideal situation for this offense third and long back up inside their 20 looking downfield and he needs a bunch he's got his man he'll get it up to about the 32 yd line before he stopped and it'll be first down the agies come to the line with a new set of downs they'll try to keep this clock moving on the ground got behind those pads and picked up three out to the 35 you know as a defense you kind of want to force the give on the RPO you want them to run the football and you could tell maybe the quarterback wishes he pulled this small gain but some information you gathered maybe for the next time you get to run an RPM One Step W twep squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground yeah and it's a nice job by this defense understanding listen that is threat and they're going to run all kinds of options and he's going to run the football they were dialed in and got that sucker to the ground takes it from the gun on third down just a short pass to the tight end he steps out of bounds but he's got enough for a first down this you to State offense has it going defenses throughout the week study every third down situation you got to be ready for what they do how they do it and then be able to adjust great job by the offense so far having success on second down will they go back to the ground game the give to the running back from the shotgun nowhere to run on that when he loses four on the car well the offensive line had everybody blocked except the defensive end he was able to sneak into the back field and get the for even if they don't convert picking up a few would give them a decision to make on he tosses one high and deep down the left side and that one's incomplete they weren't just trying to move the chain they were trying to move the scoreboard instead it's Fourth Down they'll leave the offense out there to try to get it past the marker and pick up the First on fourth down looking for the completion oh he loves to fire down field it's incomplete and they'll turn it over on down on first down here comes this offense dropping back it's Dennis coming after him and it's incomplete it was wild high and wide on that one and this defense has put a game together like it is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dial in you could tell they were ready The Freshman able to get home with the sack the defense puts the exclamation point on the day they have had a wonderful day man doing everything great just you could tell they were dialed into what was going on and now just throw another sack in the equation hitting the quarterback being disruptive they've been all over the field and they can't hook up on the big play and that brings up a fourth down and the miners will try to pin them back with the punt three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the ball on the return it's Hart he gets a block he'll be guided out of bounds but not before a Nifty return on that one guys the Utah State offense about to give it another goal what a feeling this has to be David in complete control and headed toward Victory formation yeah no stress under a couple minutes left in the ball game well in hand these are the ones Jesse you like to just run the clock take a knee whatever you want no doubt they're going to love watching this game film too there's just so many positives to take away from this and this is the kind of performance today that is really going to help this offense's confidence try he's going to throw deep right side snags it inside the 20 just what they were looking for a huge explosive play they're inside the 15 at the 13 yd line they've got him wobbling after that big play now to pay it off on First and 10 from inside the 15 here he goes breaking the pocket no by the open he just throws it away and it'll bring up second down and that's a good stop for this defense and listen there hasn't been a lot of positive today but like let's finish this game strong I think that'll be the message from the defensive coordinator can we get a stop can can we get them off the field I know a lots went wrong but like this's live in this moment and try to be great right here to end the game and I'm a fan of this man run the football eat the clock we got the lead this offense has put together a nice day man like just balance Rhythm timing play calling everything is worked that's why they built this lead they've had a great day today he's got it and still on his feet and as an offense that's just why you cannot get behind the sticks in these types of situations third in California is hard to complete and is hard to convert for anybody and even though the running back is able to do something positive on that third down play it's just too many yards and and it'll be intercepted In The End Zone obviously this game hasn't gone the way they would have liked but coaches are always looking for positive moments and things that you can build on how about that young man going out getting an interception yeah they're being blown out they're probably fires one high and deep and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it and after this play the cake will be baked can't grab it they'll throw again after the incompletion fires to the wide out last pass Falls incomplete and that's going to do it we waited so long to start the season and just the way you want to start getting that first Victory and the first games are so much fun you've been practicing against each other over and over all through camp now you get to come out start the season off one and0 Jesse great start it was a great start for the winning team now for the losing team obviously not the way you want to get into this season there were some mistakes with execution and guys are going to have to do a better job individually but that's why you play the games you get to now go back to the drawing board get back on the practice field try and eye out these wrinkles it's a long season ahead lot to play for so that's going to do it for us for Jesse Palmer David poock I'm ree Davis saying so long this
