Why McLaren’s Monza GP Was A Disaster

the Monza circuit the Temple of speed continues to provide some of the best racing we get in Formula 1 every single year what a race by Charles lir McLaren had a complete blunder and I mean a disaster of a race it should have been an easy one two we're going to go in depth a lot about that but Ferrari should be commended for staying out on the One Stop even after practice they had pretty much some of the worst Tire graining in the front and lir made it work got a very deserving victory in one of the best places to win it for the team in red it's so beautiful seeing the toosi celebrate like this and getting to see all the flags that even traveled to this race to party with the iconic Formula 1 fans which is the toosi in Monza right before getting into this race review and talking about it all wanted to thank you guys for the support on the channel outstanding as always love you guys all and thank you for supporting the channel if you're new here please go ahead and subscribe it does a lot for me and helps out the channel but let's get started with this very interesting Monza GP to start off the Temple of speed we had 53 laps around this beauty of a track and the strategy looked like it was going to be a one stop but we figured out early on even in the practice sessions that with the new tarmac we were expecting for drivers to maybe go for a TW stop depending on the race situation pretty much every driver was starting on the mediums with the except of the Red Bulls that went with a hard strategy you had a couple of other outliers like Magnus and stroll who also started on hards lights go out in Monza and Lando actually gets a great launch off the line on a track that I thought he would not be able to hold P1 he holds it going into the first Corner defends off Oscar and George pretty much ruins his race in lap one and now we get into the overtake SL incident that pretty much screwed up the rest of the race for McClaren now Oscar makes a beautiful move on the outside of Lando Norris into turn four and while this move was great you have to account for a few things first of all Oscar is not going to win the driver's Championship Lando has the best opportunity to win it going for a move like this is completely unnecessary and could have cost McLaren a lot more than just Lando it could have cost them both the race Lando definitely gave him more than enough room to actually go for the move and succeed in it which then compromised his exit going turn five and then lir benefited off of Oscar past's move looking at this move and even seeing in lap one was complete selfishness if you ask me after Lando let him through in Hungary even though the team made a mistake there and yet again the team made another mistake in having the two drivers fight on turn one in Oscar piastri obviously seeing that this is his only opportunity of maybe no team orders coming in he's going to go for the move he has nothing to lose here W Lando has everything to lose so he's not really going to defend it as hard as he typically would against another driver that's not on his team this then leads into about lap three where now piastri is breaking away from lir and Lando is still behind lir all the way up until a certain lap number lir is building a bit of pressure on Oscar here within this race there is some contention that the Ferrari could possibly push and maybe overtake the McLaren car but it's pretty clear to see that the McLaren is better on its tires and it is a bit of the faster car because they did go for a bit of a higher downforce Wing than what the Ferrari car was running getting to lap 10 the race classification was piastri lir Norris signs and Hamilton and then as you make your way down you got restoin Russell pz Alban and delonzo it was clear to see that this Red Bull package was just not working here at all which is quite a shock for the Italian GP and the team had a complete blunder we're definitely going to talk a bit more about Red Bull as well because it seems like there's no opportunity for them to actually keep fighting in this Championship considering the next upcoming races and the car itself has lost all that momentum it used to have it's a under steering Beast as I stated with Russell in lap one a little bit of a lock up and chipping off his front Wing his race was pretty much over at this point and he had to pit on lap 12 for a new front wing and the pit stop itself was just genuinely slow now in lap 15 here's another yet again seems like Mistake by McLaren they pit Lando on lap 15 and not many people are talking about this but he was behind lir by 4 T he would have made the overtake going into turn one I don't think lir would have put up too much of a fight as he probably would have saved his tires and tried to go for a One-Stop strategy even in the beginning of the race now while boxing did give him the overtake and the undercut on lir it was completely unnecessary to pit him so early it made absolutely no sense in the time so this is another fault to McLaren yet again lap 16 lir and Hamilton make their first pits as well this is to cut off the undercut but it does not work because Lando actually Powers through lir and now we could get a fight amongst Lando and Oscar they then pit the Australian on lap 17 and piastri just barely gets ahead of Lando regardless of Lando pitting earlier the car still had some Tire life and Oscar was able to preserve it and go ahead also Lando was behind the Clair so there was a pretty big time difference between the two this then gives us a race classification as signs in the front because he ended up actually staying out a bit longer for stoping and petas were on your hard compound piastri and Norris are now fighting back trying to catch up to the Red Bulls and Ferrari which will yet again be another important note that we're going to have to go over because the Red Bulls do a different strategy to pretty much everybody else as well Max in lap 19 cuts it a little close if you actually watch the car on board the under steer is insane to watch this car is a shell of its former self and I'm talking about a shell even from pretty much the Japan GP which was the fourth race of this year every input Max is putting in has to be overextended because the car is just not replying to what he is trying on the steering to actually make the car turn it's not complying with his response at all on 23 versoin finally bails from the lead and goes for yet again another hard so they are going now for a locked in two- stop strategy because he can't just run on a hard hard this ended up giving Oscar the lead now Lando is not too far behind and the order is given of you're allowed to race Oscar papaya rules now obviously they've implemented this because of all the flak they've been getting online and with their recent strategy calls and not being able to decide who's a number one and number two driver even though it's pretty clear and I want to State this before I give my opinion Lando and Oscar to me are pretty much the same I love both drivers I respect them a lot Oscar to me as a driver that's recently just gotten into our Sport and has pure speed the guy is insanely fast and deserves all the credit in the world Lando is obviously a more experienced driver he now has a few wins under his belt he's really good on tires and he's always been one of those upcoming stars in the sport that I've always loved so I'm not picking a side here but I'm just stating the obvious when this rule was given it was about a 2.5 second Gap amongst pastri and Norris but they were pretty much trading off lap times and piastri was pushing really hard for Lando not to catch up on lap 32 Lando does make a mistake and loses about 2 seconds when he was going into turn four locked it up and then had to go on the Escape Route which ended up losing him 2 seconds overall then lir got very close to Lando and Lando stated somewhere around this lap that his tires were pretty much dying out and that he should pit because the front left was getting very badly grained up on lap 33 Norris finally opts for a pit stop making his final stop which in hindsight now looking at it was not the correct call by the McLaren Squad this also did put him behind Max and Red Bull did stay to Max you know what if L's already here we might as well defend and hold him back for a few seconds which is what Max ended up actually doing with Lando being behind Max he defended him pretty well for like two or three laps but it's clear to see this Red Bull car just doesn't have the pace to fight no matter what the tire disadvantage or Advantage is piastri then Pits on lap 39 which is about seven laps later and he's still a pretty good amount ahead of land though and is now trying to go after lir and Carlos who ended up staying out which was a very bold move at the time but the correct one now looking at the end of the GP Norris finally overtakes after seven laps Max for stopping on lap 40 and now it's about Lando and Oscar pretty much putting in qualifying laps to see if they can catch up to those two Ferrari drivers maximum attack between the two and as you can see in this picture the Ferrari car was losing grip very very quickly it was clear to see that the new tire was giving them about a second to a second and a half in Pace but if lir was able to keep this up he would win the GP by the end on lap 45 piastri gets into second which would be his finishing position lap 48 is where Lando finally ends up passing signs himself but the real talk of these last couple laps is what lir was able to do with these tires and how he was able to get Victory conserving tires that were pretty much dead and still putting in lap times that were competitive enough to keep him ahead was an insane feat and I think the respect that lir should give for this race and in general what he's been doing in this second half of the Season I'm not even just talking about from xanor onwards the guy's been outstanding lir didn't have the greatest middle part of the year but lately he's showing why he's Championship caliber with minimal mistakes super fast pace and Ferrari is making a leap up Baku and Singapore are about to be amazing GPS for the team I fully expect them to be fighting with McLaren there a beautiful victory for the Ferrari car and for the Ferrari team it's very nice to see them win after a pretty bad struggle of races which definitely had the team down especially even in zenor when they saw that McLaren was pretty much uncatchable beautiful to see Carlos sign should also be commended for a little bit of a defending effort on Oscar pastri and holding him back this actually probably did help out in the long run and it was his birthday so we should give out Carlos SS a shout out considering it's his last GB here in Monza very sad to see love that driver and I wish he would have stayed with Ferrari longer but you can't pass up a deal on Louis Hamilton the most decorated driver in our Sport and while this was all fun the other talking point that I have to make is that McLaren at the end of the GP even though Oscar didn't catch lir and didn't have a chance of catching lir was still 3 seconds off by the end did not switch their drivers for the driver Championship so that Lando could get another three points so this now puts ver stopen at 303 and Norris at 241 which is still a 62 Point difference he pretty much gained about eight points in this GP starting P1 while Max started p7 which is horrendous considering what the starting grid was and what was expected of the team this was simply to put it a complete disaster class for McLaren it should have been a very obvious and easy onew they had the quickest car no matter the strategy they would have won the race even if they went for the two stop if they were leading and they had the Clean Air between the two drivers this would have been a McLaren victory in a onew the actual Constructors is super close now Ferrari is also about 40 points behind McLaren is about 7 to 10 points behind as well on Red Bull it's going to be close but we all care about the driver's Championship so much more other interesting things to note by the end of this GP Magnus will miss the Baku GP if the penalty points are enforced because now he has 12 which is a race ban so we could see Ali bman for Baku which is his specialty track to be honest in F2 so I'd like to see what he can do here in a hoscar that's been pretty quick down the streets yet again what a Joy by lir and what a selfish act if you ask me from Oscar piastri who was given the victory in Hungary and part of the reason why he was given that Victory will Joseph Lando Norris's engineer even said at the time you will need Oscar if you want to win this championship well it looks like Oscar is not complying and it seems like Lando's kind of on his own here because Andrea Stella is also another big part of this he needs to be enforcing when the team should be Trading Places this should have been obvious and a very big blunder by McLaren if I might add i' love to hear your thoughts down in the comments below I think it's pretty obvious to see whether you're an Oscar pastri fan or not think about it in this way if your driver was in the championship what would you have liked
