we are back welcome back to another episode of clutch genan Sports the San Francisco 49ers pulled off a huge week one Victory beat the Jets really gave him an ass whooping 3219 me and my guy Marco we're here to break that down and give you guys a little bit of an update on week two where the 49ers they're going to have their first road game that'll all come right after this [Music] welcome back everybody to another episode of clutch jeam SP Sports I'm your host Rohan chakravarti I got my guy Marco Martinez how you doing my guy I'm doing good man hey Niners get a victory you know I know it's not Victory Monday Victory Tuesday I guess we can call it Victory Wednesday for this one week but the ners pull off a big one you know 31 or 32 to 19 Jets got a touchdown in uh in garbage time but really this one was just like a beating you know after the initial early Rush struggles the ners pulled it off what were your kind of just initial thoughts on that game one Victory I mean to start I was like okay like it was going to be a competitive game right like it looked like it was going to be a little back and forth defensive game and and low a little bit low scoring in the like moving the ball and stuff like that and then the Niner just took over in that second quarter and absolutely from second quarter on just absolutely dominated the New York Jets now the New York Jets pass rush wasn't getting to to Brock prie I thought that was pretty significant especially with the o line having big concerns um defense looked phenomenal um secondary is as advertised man it was definitely a different kind of style of game that I was expecting I was expecting a closer game the ners absolutely handled business um Vibes are absolutely down um during training camp with no Trent No ba Vibes feel great like I'm not worried about any kind of Vibes right now like The Vibes are Skyhigh um going into week two in Minnesota like going against Sam darnold man it's a great time to be a 49ers fan because what we saw from the 49ers week one is what we saw from them last year heading into the Super Bowl a dominant team a dominant defense um super excited to continue watching them grow um you should this should be the worst you should see the 49ers because every week if you're a great head coach a great team you're getting better every week so from here on out you should see better performances from the 49ers I think that's a good point you know this is the worst version of the 49ers and they really handed a a Beatdown to the Jets in week one it's not like the Niners were perfect but a lot of things looked really good and a lot of questions you know that the that were going coming going into the season there was a little bit more optimism around those questions for example the biggest question I had run defense how is this team going to look against the run you hold one of the better running backs in the NFL Bree Hall to 54 yards on 16 carries under four yards a carry and really you limited the explosive plays that was the big thing the the 49ers didn't give up these major gains on the ground that allowed New York to move the ball down the field you were able to limit that you set up third and Longs for Aaron Rogers in company and that's where you can make it a little you know a little tougher on them now surprisingly the 49ers did struggle on four third and Longs you know I think they were uh there were some issues that needed to be wrinkled out there but regardless he only gave up seven points for a good portion of the game the Jets ended up scoring after that and this was a really dominant performance by the defense you force two turnovers you have a good run defense you already know the pass defense is going to work and then when you move to the offensive side of the ball offensive line was a question right Trent Williams hadn't been practicing the entire offseason but I thought really outside of that initial Rush from that first kind of set of plays the first two set of plays where you suck hold mivit give up a rush I believe to Javon kinw or it was either hry Quinn Williams and then you saw Jake brindle kind of get beat on one play Then you you see this offensive line really start to step up in pass protection didn't get beat he got o oblit ated bro that was he got his ass whooped on that play I know exact play you're talking about cuz I was watching and I was like holy [ __ ] did you guys just see and I believe it was Javon kinla who threw Brendle out the club it was K on Brendle yeah yeah he got he got his ass handed to on that rip and I guarantee you in the film room he's saying the same [ __ ] damn Javon kin just handed me my ass right there yeah but I got to focus on the positives because apart from that the 49ers offensive line did their part you know and and that's from left to right Trent Williams had a perfect slink in his first game back that's just impressive I mean you know we had questions how what is Trent G to look like in this year you know another another year of age tacked on he's coming off an offseason where he hasn't practiced at all he looked great in week one both in the run and the pass Dominic puny looked great Aaron Banks had a clean slate as well so when you when you combine all of this it's an impressive performance from the offensive line and then you mentioned Jordan Mason and the Run game flourished they have they allowed 3.8 yards before contact per Rush that's incredible you know some some teams don't even get 3.8 yards per Rush combined with before contact and after contact and the Niners were able to get that before contact let alone you have Jordan Mason who's able to bully through he averaged over almost around five yards a carry had a huge workload and so this was just a really impressive win overall yeah and like I would say like the the biggest con concern for me and I don't really think it's concerned because obviously first game of the season like you want you want to be super efficient in the Red Zone I believe the ners are two for five in the red zone so you want to see the 49ers score those touchdowns um I don't like seeing field goals because obviously when you're playing against great team then I could be wrong it could be a little bit the stat could be um different than two for five but I thought it was two for five in the Red Zone um I want to see the ners convert those field goals into touchdowns I don't want to see field goals because what ends up happening is later in the year when you're playing against the Patrick Mahomes or when you're playing against um the elite elite teams right like you want those to be touchdowns now I understand that a lot of things happen um you don't want I think ners two for five just checked Red Zone attempts it was two for five you don't want to be settling for field goals now Jake Moody hell of a six for six probably one of the best games I've seen for Jake Moody he looks confident even though he called bankof the goal post at one point I think that was probably the biggest concern um the next biggest concern for me was third down um you got to be efficient on third down six for 13 isn't good enough um now I know you're playing against a good defense but those are the two only like negatives that I had from that game outside of everything else um I would say another one if I had wanted to be nitpicky Kyle Shanahan grow some balls and go for it on fourth down like that's the only thing that I can see even though you're up big in the fourth quarter fourth and one those are the opportunities when you're up big to get reps like that right like how are you going to respond when you are playing a Patrick mahom Le Leed uh offense in the Kansas City Chiefs their great defense that they have over there going for it on fourth and one now allows for you to get reps on Fourth and ones like that so that's kind of things where I'm like Kyle go for it and the whole time when when the the because they ended up going to commercial break I'm like you got to go for it you gotta go there's no other option you go for it settle for the field goal to me I think that is a failure from the coaching standpoint but I'm just curious to see what you have to what you have to say about that one because I thought that was a weak ass call you know I was uh both I I was initially surprised in a happy way because Kyle Shan was going for it right and then you had saw the Jets call timeout I was I I tweeted about it too I was like this is a great opport you know great opportunity a great call from K shahin he goes for it you call the timeout and then they come out and kick the field goal at that stage with the way your offense was moving I don't know why you kick the field goal there I know Jake Moody has been you know he was as accurate as he's ever been really um in the NFL level and you have an a reliable option but I believe at that stage it was a 13 point game kicking to you know kicking a field goal makes it a 16-point game that's still a two score two-score game A two touchdown game if you truly were looking to just put the hammer on really find a way to call it a night make it a three-score game you go out and you kick you you go out and you score that touchdown not only does that instill confidence in your offense and let you try things out that you're going to need later in the season but it also instills confidence in your defense because you know that those guys are going to be able to stop the Jets if you don't end up converting it was deep anyway in you know in in New York territory that one was a little bit confusing yeah on those you you gota you gotta capitalize on touchdowns there like that's to me you got to go for it on fourth and one it's inexcusable to to not go for it um and and it may it may be the ners like you know we're already up games away put away let's just take the points but then again it's that's something you got you're going to have to do against Great teams and for me that was my biggest concern one thing I did notice and I know Dominic puny had a great game I'm not this is nothing against Dominic puny I thought Dominic puny was a had a great first start but one thing I did notice was a lot of those reps were against a former 49er player that is considered a bust Solomon Thomas a lot of those reps were against s and Su isn't known for being a disruptor he's known for getting blown off the ball so for me even though Dominic pun had a great first game and I'm not taking anything against him because obviously s is NFL caliber and Dominic puny was also doing this to a lot of other players getting to the second level he looked like a veteran playing at the right guard position but a lot of it when I'm watching watching I'm like okay I want to see I want I wanted the Jets to line um Williams up on puny more um just because it's valuable reps right like you want to see the young rooky go against the better defensive tackle but what were your what was your takeaway from Dominic P because I thought he was dominant like outside of the a going against Solomon Thomas he went up against other guys to kinlaw and other guys like that what was your takea away from Dominic puny yeah I mean I like the point that you you do bring up that it is against Salomon Thomas but regardless that was the matchup and Dominic puny you couldn't ask of anything really more from a from a you know from a rookie in his first game that was a strong performance from Dominic puny and so really when you when you look at 49ers and their draft picks and things like that Dominic puny has come along as fast as any other draft pick that the 49ers have had recently and that's an that that's a key necessity because we were talking in the preseason and really in the offseason the 49ers are going to need at least one of these rookies to be con like a a true contributor in 2024 when you look back at the last few Super Bowl teams they each have had at least one key contributor that came from their rookie class because when you have a team like this as constructed and as I'm not going to say topheavy but with the money allocated to so many high highle players you're going to need cheaper contracts to be able to fill out the roster and that comes in the former rookies the 49ers have found a gem it seems like in Dominic puny they made the correct move it seems to select him and he's come along as fast as possible and remember we didn't even know if this was going to happen he was initially injured or sorry he initially came in for an injured defenser berford who we can talk about as well but I I thought Dominic pun did well yeah and and I'm not trying to take anything against Dominic P like I'm just like when I watch the film I'm watching everything and there was a common denominator it was Solomon Thomas lined up the one time I I did see that I could remember it was pass Pro um against Keenan Williams he got blown off the ball um he he lost initially lost the rep ended up recovering anchoring well and it was the the first pass um completed to Brandon iuk was on a Crossing route um in it was wasn't a bad rep I mean he initially lost recovered and ended up winning the rep um but you can see the difference in terms of the talent when he went up against um from suly to to Kenny Williams so I I I want to continue seeing him against better defensive tackles that's for sure um you mentioned Spencer berford he came in for an injured Aaron Banks and he looked phenomenal bro like to be honest if it wasn't for berford getting injured um during camp and breaking that hand I don't think puny starts like I kept saying like I don't think I think this is B's job to lose and watching what berford did coming in from Aaron Banks it's like holy [ __ ] Dominic puny capitalized on the opportunity because Banks would berford would have never have given up that job he looked phenomenal um in in that game against the Jets and that to me it's very interesting because what that tells me Rohan I know it's very premature is the ners will not extend Aaron Banks they have a cheap year of of berford next year you let Banks walk you get um let a team pay him you get a comp pick for him and then you draft another interior offens lineman with that pick I think the Niners are going to go with that route rather than extending Aaron Banks and let another team essentially overpay for him because you're not going to pay what the market value is anytime someone hits the market you got to overpay for them to come in but man berford phenomenal game as well from him yeah I mean I'm not going to lie I was thinking the same thing when you look at the game because I've gotten watch a good amount of NFL football this past weekend and when you look at it there are a couple of things that pointed out one the guards and really the NFL offensive lineman that got paid this year last year those deals don't really look that good right now and so you know you already are wary about paying significant money to a free agent offensive lineman then you see what Aaron or Spencer berford did in place of Aaron Bank and I'm not saying Banks had a good game as well let's let's put that out there for sure I mean a clean slate and pass Pro which is the the most important thing and but Spencer berford he came out here he put up together a good game put together some nice plays in The Run game and the pass game and you wonder do the 49ers have their left guard next year already on the roster it's just a different player than what you're imagining and I think so I I think the Niners I've been on record a ton thinking that the Niners are not going to extend Aaron Banks regardless the only question was who would be the replacement would it be another guy in the draft would they just go for a cheap veteran I think that they might have found that replacement you know here with Spencer berford a guy who like you I believe would have started at Right Guard had he not gotten injured yeah it's just this is a ners in a great situation right now to be honest with with you Aaron Banks comes back this is something I threw out there um the night of uh of the game post game on or actually no yeah it wasn't of the game may have been Tuesday morning but I could have thought it was the spaces um if the Niners are up big against the Vikings and eron Banks plays hey coot mckivitz hit the bench let's see what let's see what berford could do at right tackle I know been pushing that for a while been pushing this narrative for so long Rohan he is not a guard he is a tackle now at left left guard he's going to look better and the reason why he's going to look better it's easier to play football when you're next to a Hall of Fame left tackle right it's easier life's easier it's a lot more you don't have to think you just react because you know that the left tackle next you is going to react the right way when it's mckivitz it's a different different scenario right imagine if the 49ers can imagine this the ners lock in berford right they start playing them at right tackle they realize he's a better tackle than mckivitz he's an upgrade now you're o line upgrades that right tackle and Right Guard that's a huge Improvement so I mean I I think it's a it's a it's a far-fetched idea but if you're up big against teams why not play B why not play berford that right tackle to see what he is that's what he was what you drafted him for as a tackle in college that's something I've been throwing out there I hope they do it eventually I don't think I don't see the N are doing it because they're in love with col mckivitz for some odd reason he's their weakest Point outside of Jake brindle on the off defensive line and I think felicio when he comes back I think he replaces Brendle now that's a question also for for for probably a while down the road but that's the one true link right now of the 49ers offensive line that you're questioning right how is Jake brindle gonna fit into this picture because he did not look great early in that first game and you know that Brendle you you kind of know what you're going to get out of Brendle go ahead I would would say too throughout the game he a lot of the runs later in the game could have been broken off for bigger games big ones get to the second level like he strug I saw one specifically where Jordan Mason was gonna go to the right side M if Brendle gets to the second level it's a just a huge huge gap yeah like it's just for me it's just the inconsistency from Jake brindle like it's yes you're you're capable of being a starter in the league right but like can you do the next level things now can you be that highlevel guy they need at Center because you know what now it's Jake brindle is holding up the o line right now that's what I see I mean I could be completely wrong but that's what I see from Jake brindle I think he right now is the weak point along the offensive line and we could argue obviously him and coot mckivitz are probably up there one and two however you range them it's the same for me um but I think if you if you upgrade at right tackle with berford there for some like for you let him play and he's better Feliciano comes back and he he's an upgrade at Center your o line is a lot better than most people think yeah I I think that that's a you know that's a good good thing and a good possibility that could happen now I want to say this to you though the Niners I think they were ranked by a lot of different you know statistical Outlets as a top 10 o line in week one do you if this Old Line stays the same as it is right now do you feel confident in this group hard question right does everyone stay healthy in a vacuum if everyone says healthy yeah assum yeah yeah assuming they stay healthy I think you have a top 15 o line which is what you need with the weapons and the quarterback you have right like you don't need a top five offensive line with what you have like that's not what the N the ners understood how good their weapons are and how good their quarterback is that you don't need a top line you don't need to pay for that high level offensive line which I disagree with because if that offensive line is a top five offensive line you're by far the best offense in the league probably the best team in the league because of the o line like right look what for example we go back and watched the Sunday Night Football game um the Detroit Lions they oppos their will late in the game by just running the ball down the Real's throat because they have the one of the best offensive lines in the league so if they if they stay healthy say yeah but the thing is is the depth behind them if someone goes down it's concerning to me um now I do think they have a starting level guard in berford at either spot so you have that that's good right but if one of those tackles goes down we don't know what any of the tackles behind them could possibly do with the starting offensive line and that's where I'm a bit concerned so that's where I would be like H is everyone healthy if yeah then yeah we have a top 15 offensive line maybe top 10 I I think that that's fair and I think right now you definitely can say that this group looks like a top 15 o line with the with the potential for more and I think that they could even push that top 10 range that they had um you know that they had I guess during those years when you were a little more comfortable with the offensive line I think this group looks good I think this group answered a lot of questions this last week and I I'm curious to see how this group kind of maintains themselves throughout the year but I'm also confident in the group because of the depth you know you mentioned an injury well I I'm not going to say anything about Trent Williams if Trent Williams goes down that's a huge downgrade regardless of who's a player but at guard you have Spencer berford who filled in admirably and then at Center when he returns you're going to have John Feliciano you know so you have solid enough backups who can definitely play the position and who could be starters in other teams as backups and I think that that's what the 49ers you know that's that's one of the things that they maybe didn't have in years past but that depth I think is is there this year with two quality players do you think so you think they have a starting a backup starting level backup at right tackle though because like I know a lot of us we always talk about Trent Williams going down right like well what about mckivitz if he goes down do we trust Jaylen Moore to step in there or do we trust berford to step in there we don't know what Jaylen what uh berford is at right tackle we know we kind of know what we know what uh Jaylen Moore is I don't trust him if he goes down does that off that offensive line takes a huge hit right yeah exactly which is crazy because we we don't think he's that good of a player but behind him it's even worse right and that's fair that is fair but my my my point kind of more so is do you really know many teams that have backup level tackles that no no it goes across the N you're right you're right you're not and I'm not saying like it's I'm not saying the Niners should have eight offensive LS that could start like right like across the NFL you hardly see that but again if they would have drafted a rookie offensive tackle they wouldn't have had that issue right right exactly that's true that is true now let's get to you know maybe looking a little bit more towards some of the key issues ahead of this week one obviously Christian mcaffrey the the health has been a question we obviously had the snafu this past weekend mcaffrey was limited in practice today he said that he expects to play this weekend um you know in interviews earlier today and so what do you kind of take of the whole mcaffrey situation what is your opinion on it and what do you think ultimately happens and I expect to get hired by the 49ers by the end of the weekend like I could we could expect a lot of things it's not happening he's not playing like let's be honest he's this limited participation isn't much um when it comes to participating a lot of times you could go through stretches in a light walk through and that's considered limited participation if you're walking through something what does that have to do with participating in practice now I had heard this morning and that was way too early for me to be up um but I got a text message that the Niners had discussions with medical staff with Christian mcaffrey regarding not necessarily they're going to place him on IR but the possibility of what if we place you on IR does it help your injury now it's um achilles tendonitis which every doctor that has talked U coach Desi was on Spaces um Jesse Morse on a medical doctor who does um high level injuries like that um another medical doctor um who used to be the head medical doctor for the Los Angeles Chargers um he goes by pro football Doc it's doc David Chow um he was the head level head co um for the Chargers 17 plus um years of a head team doctor he says that Christian mcaffrey probably misses more than this week coming up and he he mentions possibly three weeks three weeks means possibly IR like the conversations are being had in the building whether Kyle shanan goes to the media and says we're not talking about that you really s you really sitting here when it comes to when Achilles injury Rohan think about think about this if you know there's potential rupture and you're not asking the medical staff should we play some on IR that's malpractice like like you gotta you doesn't sound that's ignorant if you if you don't ask the medical staff should we play some on what would you recommend should we place some on our guess what that's a conversation about the IR so as most people are like oh no they're not Kyle Shanahan said I don't care what KY Shanahan says in the situation because they've talked about it medical staff Kyle and Christian mcaffrey John Lynn all those people in the building have discussed it so right it's a huge concern um because of the rupture right like it's possibility to rupture when I asked coach Desi was on Spaces yesterday and we asked her a lot of questions and she was saying like the best thing for him is to be in a walking boot she's like I don't understand this like the I don't know what's going on I'm but she was if I was working with him I would put him in a walking boot um until that is fully healed a lot of times it could take four weeks it could take a month two months she because it all depends on how severe he's dealing with she also mentioned that she's not worried about a rupture because he's going to be taken care of the right way but then I asked her I was like well we thought the same thing for Dre Greenlaw right but then you overcompensate she goes that's the issue is if he starts his body starts to over overcompensate the other Achilles could rupture so I think this is a bigger concern than the 49ers are making seeing to keep saying oh it's just a limited he took himself out of practice last Friday a player doesn't take himself out of practice unless it is serious especially with Christian mcaffrey who treats his body so well so that's where I'm at right now um what are your thoughts on Christian I think when you kind of talk about Christian mcaffrey it's pretty clear that this is a lingering issue you know when it comes to tendonitis that's something we talk about in the off season as a potential issue for a guy like Jake brindle you know and there have been other where we've had tontis issues and this one's a little more concerning because we know that this injury lingered from last year you know the calf issues that mcaffrey had last year limited him at the end of the year he still played through it but that's something to knowe and if you this is the beginning of the season if you want a fully healthy mcaffrey for the playoffs or the healthiest version of mcaffrey for the playoffs you have to do what's best for his health over potentially putting him in there early on to try and win games and you also kind of note that you're probably going to be able to win the games anyway knowing what you just saw from Jordan Mason and what you saw from the rest of the team I think right now the team is at a great state with or without mcaffrey to shoulder the load for the first few weeks when you look at the opponents for the first few weeks you you have Minnesota this next week you have a Rams team that is really reeling with injuries you have an Arizona Cardinals team and you have the New England Patriots I believe those are the first or four the first five matchups you know um or the next four matchups excuse me uh for the 49ers those are all winnable games without Christian mcaffrey they might be tough just because of the nature of how football is but I think that that could potentially give you an a window to where you might want to put Christian mcaffrey on IR noting that also creates a roster spot you know the 49ers only went with three running backs this last week you don't really want to give Jordan Mason 28 carries a game that's not going to be a you know that's not maybe healthy for his workload you don't want to risk an injury to him and so you probably want to rotate two guys in maybe three guys in uh into the fold even if it's minimal carries and so I I I think that you've definitely got to be cautious when it comes to Christian mcaffrey knowing that the end goal is having him healthy for the playoffs and the stretch you know the stretch run of the Season especially when you get to some of those tougher games you know you're talking about week 16 or week 17 versus Detroit you're talking about some of those games you're going to want him there and so to me right now I think that we definitely are on the side of caution for for chrisan mcaffrey and you kind of just go week by week see how it is because KY Shanahan said that they aren't going to put him on IR we'll see what the ultimate cases maybe they believe that he'll be back by week three week four which is my estimation around week 4ish you know um but right now yeah this is a a tough one and it's unfortunate because it probably regardless of how long he sits out will be an injury that lingers throughout the season yeah and you don't want an injury like that lingering especially when it's attached to the Achilles we saw what happened when Dre greenw went down to the Super Bowl how impactful it was to the team um the energy obviously went down drastically so you obviously don't want something like that to linger um I think at the end of the day when we're looking at Christian mcaffrey um I think the best option is IR um put him on the IR and now you could bring him back for that Thursday night game against the um uh the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle I don't do that actually if you're going to put him on the IR I think you let him sit out five games um you let him sit out that Thursday night game um you bring him back for that Chiefs game um at home um one o'clock game I think that would be the best thing to do um now it does suck because you play three division opponents to start without uh Christian mcaffrey at the end of the day I would rather have the 49ers make the wild card with a healthy Christian mcaffrey in the playoffs than win the division Christian mcaffrey be out for the season and not not be able to play during the playoffs that would be drastic to the 49ers Super bow aspirations and I think that's something they need to consider and I think they definitely are considering it even though they're telling the media that they have never spoke about or never mentioned IR for him because I guarantee you they have yeah I'm sure that they have and I that that that's probably got to be you know a conversation that continues on for the 49ers because like I said the most important thing thing is Christian McCaffrey's Health you want to see can he you're you're probably going to see him in practice you want to see really how that responds but seems like he's going to be limited throughout the week again probably Jordan Mason on Sunday and mcaffrey maybe goes week three if not probably week four if he doesn't end up going on IR yeah and what backups are out there that I mean if you do put him on the IR who would you want them to bring up or who would you want them to sign cuz I know I have someone I want them to sign off someone's practice squad I haven't seen the practice squad once but so I'll let you go for that I want to see more Isaac gendo Reno got in there like briefly uh you know this past week but it was a lot of Deo Samuel in the Run game Debo Samuel's valuable for sure wasn't as efficient in the Run game this past week and I don't know how much you want him to sustain those amount of hits you know on a weekly basis early in the season um um I think he's definitely got value and I wouldn't mind that he's in the you know the involved in the Run game here and there but I don't know if he should get eight nine carries I want to see Isaac gendo in there who's your guy though I'm curious to hear now so I know the 49ers have kesan vaugh on the practice squad that's not who I would call up or who I would sign to the roster I would pick up the phone and I before I even call I would hit up Frank Frank Gore Senor how would your son would your son like to play for us okay would your son like to play for us if his if if the dad says he would love it I'm picking up the phone I'm calling FR Gore Jr we want you on our on our on our roster it might be just for four weeks but there's a special re the special team's ability there's going to be opportunities in the backfield obviously Patrick Taylor is there um I would I would probably have him ahead of Patrick Taylor that is something I would do um now 49er fans would love it because obviously they love Frank Gore but that's something I would do I would hit up Fran Gore Jr no I don't know if that's going to happen necessarily but it should that would be an entertaining idea that that that's for sure that would be entertaining is he on a practice squad right now yeah he's on the Buffalo Bills practice squad he didn't end up making their roster ah right yeah okay okay cool but um yeah but as of now seems like San Francisco is rolling with their room let's look at we two Jordan Mason's going to probably end up being the one how do you like his chances here in week two after the game he just had I like it because you're going up against a uh Vikings defense I believe I'm not mistaken Brian Flores is over there so he's going to do a lot of different things um defensively he's going to try to take away the run and go press they don't have the corners to press the 49ers receivers they're their Corners are absolutely weak they did sign Stefan Gilmore I believe okay so they may okay so I mean you have Stefon Gilmore you could probably press Brandon auk but get burnt deep because Gilmore can't run anymore so you have that that likelihood right so I like the chances I mean if I'm playing fantasy I'm not starting Mason um even though he had a huge week he's probably obviously if you're out with Christian mcaffry and he's your your running back you probably start him but I wouldn't like go and try to pick him up and start him only because I think there's better players along the team especially with the Niners team seeing what Jordan Mason are is doing they're going to try to take away the Run um the Niners are probably it's gonna open up the offense Brandon auk Debo KD Jennings those guys are probably going to Feast um especially with teams wanting to stack the Box against the Jordan Mason and forcing pretty to throw we obviously saw Jordan Mason face the most eight-man boxes uh or at least eight-man boxes rushing the ball with eight man boxes in the NFL in week one so you know what teams are going to try to do they're going to try to take away the run against the 49ers with Christian mcaffry out I'm willing to take away Jordan Macy and if I'm a defensive coordinator and force 49ers to beat me in the pass game then allow them to continue to run the ball at a high clip um because when the ners running the ball I think they're the most dangerous offense in the NFL because they have the play action they have a lot of other things they could go to um but yeah I think Jordan Mason will have a good game but I'm not saying like he's going to be 30 carries for 150 yards again but I think you I think you can see him with 20 something carries for about 85 90 yards okay yeah I mean that's a that's still a pretty significant workload you know you get 20 carries 8090 yards is what the formers is looking for do you think it's going to be a similar type of pace game from week one when it comes to the Niners want to pound the ball they might get to 30 35 carries but they also get as much as they did on you know just through the air or how do you think the game plan is going to go against this Vikings team against Brian Flores who likes to D blitzes who like to change up looks what's kind of your expectation you got to throw the ball Brian Flores is going to bring pressure he's gonna bring exotic looks he's going to do different things see your your offense that Brock pretty has struggled against right like he's Brian Flores is gonna go to the game plan that the Kansas City Chiefs had um that the Lions tried to do um that the Packers tried to do in the playoffs right like he's going to go exotic pressures get the ball out of Brock sanss um try to stop the run and I think once you do that you go um those kind of looks you got to be able to throw the ball and you got to be able to be efficient on third Downs because if not they have good they have good players on their offensive side of the ball obviously Sam darnold not 100% sold on him I think he's a good quarterback I don't think he's like that good of a quarterback where he's going to dice up the Niners defense but when you have a receiver like Justin Jefferson anything is possible on that end we saw last year the Niners playing against the Minnesota Vikings what happened when the Niners played them Jordan Addison probably might not play with an ankle injury um Aaron Jones over there I think that's interesting um so they're gonna it's going to be a little bit different of a different style of football game right because Sam Dar is more mobile he you can't just send pressure to him because he's a little bit more mobile than Aaron uh Rogers at this point so when if you do send pressures and you don't get to him possibility of him escaping stuff like that but I think their receiver core um even without hackinson might be a little bit better than what the Jets gave out to the 49ers right they have a number two receiver um they have someone in in the passing game um as good as Wilson I think obviously Jefferson is the best receiver in the league but you have someone do they let um Deo travel do they let tus W travel with him because if not you know what the Vikings are gonna try they're G to match up Justin Jefferson on a safety every here and there on a linebacker they're going to do certain things to get them open and I think it's going to be a much different style of game I think it's gonna be a a heavier passing style of game for both sides you know what we saw in week one at least early on when Garrett Wilson was kind of going with those four catches on the S on on that second drive for the Jets it was out of the slot you know and I know Garrett Wilson works a good amount out of the slot he also works on the outside do you think that that's what they try and do with Justin Jefferson who has that flexibility he can definitely cook out of the slot out of the outside to try and get him open yeah you you definitely you're definitely going to put him in the slot um you also have Jordan Addison who's questionable um he didn't practice today um so that's usually not a good sign the injury but I think it's an ankle and I don't see him I don't think he plays this week which is pretty big yeah he probably doesn't play which is huge for the ners because now Jordan Addison's a really good receiver so now if you're looking at their roster their third receiver maybe Jaylen Naylor um I believe um yeah n that think that's who they're they're gonna roll out and Naylor's nothing like Addison so you're you're doing a lot of different things now if they have Addison you could line either up e either of them up in the slot and pick your poison right like that's kind of what you what they did last season to the 49ers now if the ners are calling zero blitzes late in the second quarter to end a half then we're in trouble right like obviously you don't want to do certain things like that um but I'm curious how does how do you think Sam Dar looks against us this is kind of a Revenge game right like it's in a way like hey you guys didn't think I was good enough to be your backup or even your potentially um compete with Brock which 100% understandable I would never let let Sam Doo compete with Brock but this is as a player this is kind of you put in your head right I'm better than that guy why wasn't I playing that's stuff you put in your head to give yourself fuel do you think that gives himself some fuel and he's able to compete or does he look and see ghosts against the 49ers it might give him fuel to throw the ball more which I don't think is gonna go well for him Sam Donald had a great week one I watched that first half of the game at least and he was on a tear you know against a a Giants defense that has kind of turned down I guess they used to be pretty good not as much anymore I don't see him having that much success here in week two I know they have a good receiver and Justin Jefferson Aaron Jones look good on the run I'm curious to see how he kind of plays against this um you know against this 49ers Ste line but I think Sam darnold is going to struggle with the turnovers in this week I think he's a guy who likes to take risks in the 49ers showed in week one they're a team that if you give them opportunities they're going to pounce on them and I think the 49ers are going to find a way to create those turnovers here in week two and that's going to be a key um you know for them winning uh against Minnesota I think that that's going to be an issue darnold you know had a pretty clean week one when it comes to um you know the turnover worthy plays I know he threw a pick but he was pretty accurate with the football he threw the ball downfield I just don't know if that's going to be to similar success against the against the 49ers especially if Jordan Madison is out and you have really two receiver or sorry the main receiver to focus on and then you can have one-on-one opportunities elsewhere so I'm I'm I'm very worry about how Sam Don's gonna play in this week yeah it's definitely interesting right because like their offense looked very efficient I'm not gonna lie their offense look good they're um in terms of dvo um and everything like that dvoa they're ninth ranked in the NFL but obviously they're playing against uh I believe the worst one of the worst defenses in the league um New York Giants defense was ranked 25th against dvoa so obviously not that good of a defense nothing compared to the Niners defense that's for sure so he was also pressured I believe the most out of all quarterbacks in the NFL um during week one which is very interesting because this is a game where he should get pressured even more um better defensive line than the New York Giants actually very comparable actually very comparable against this the Giants have a good D line let me let me back that up but I just because they have Burns they have uh TiVo no it's not TiVo is it you're saying Giants have Tibido yeah yeah is it Tibido that's how you say last name yeah Tibido um tibo yeah you're right is there Dexter Lawrence they have a good D line so they got after they got after the the the Vikings so they've been battle tested obviously get with the most amount of pressures and everything like that so the 49ers should probably produce the same amount of pressures as New York Giants because their D lines are about the same but when you're looking at things at the end of the day it's Sam darnold if you're a betting person I would probably take the over on interceptions for Sam darnold um I'm pretty sure it's probably over one or over half um over half yeah I would take the over on that if I had to take the over um or if I had to bet on something because that's something I think's gonna happen it's inevitable it's bound to happen um do you think they could run the ball against us so they have a better off in line than the New York than the New York Jets do you think they could run the ball uh I don't know the reason being yeah they do have a better offensive line than the Jets and they have strong tackles you know you're looking at a guy like Christian derasa he's very good that old line in general even up the middle is solid this is more of a wait and see Aaron Jones had a great game 94 yards 14 you know 14 carries and it's it's fine to doubt the defense against a team you know against a good um offensive coordinator and a good running back but after the week that we just saw from the 49ers where players are just running to the football they're just smothering that uh you know that run game I'm going to air on the side of the 49ers here and I think that they're still going to be able to stifle you know that Minnesota offense and that's also why I'm a lot more bullish in this week because if that run game is not as efficient as it was in week one specifically with Aaron Jones averaging like six seven yards a k carry then the passing game isn't going to be nearly as efficient and that's where those opportunities for turnovers start to get generated and so to me because I think that the Run game isn't gonna have nearly as much success as they had in week one in terms of efficiency that's where I stand kind of heading into week two yeah I I agree with you um because you I think there the biggest thing is the 49ers defensive line against their offensive line they have good offensive line so they they they they should be able to block um my biggest concern throughout the season for for like well pre offseason was Niners run defense their run defense look good so it's like can you stop if you could stop the run you dominate this game as well I think that's just the biggest recipe for the ners this year if you could stop the run you're going to be an elite defense because their secondary looks revamped pass pass rush looks better the biggest question is the run run defense and I think I don't think the ners were really I don't think they were really questioned or even tested T tested more so than questioned on Monday night like they didn't even the the Packers could not get to the run because they went down early they went down early and that's when you have to start throwing the ball a little bit more um even though some teams I think you a lot of teams go away from the run a little too early thought the Packers did as well yeah and I think that that's fair you know if the if the team goes away from the run early I think that that's what's going to maybe bite them later on in the game I do think we have two good questions though on the other side of the ball one 49ers o line versus the Vikings Ste line we saw the 49ers o line I praised them at the beginning of this video they they did really well you know against a pretty good defense in week one I thought they held up well the Vikings though their dline and their defense as a whole kind of ate up that that Giants team again it's the Giants their offensive line specifically in the interior they struggle a lot Daniel Jones doesn't really he's not that good when it comes to holding on to the football and getting rid of it quickly but the dline there got five sacks you know some off the edge um and then some up the middle as well and so how do you think this battle plays out a 49ers o line versus the Vikings D line both in the pass and the Run game do you think the ners are well equipped after what they showed in week one oh yeah absolutely but I think it's more so it's more than the for the the Vikings dline because you never see Brian Flores let his D line just get after it he always throws exotic looks he does different things to make sure his even if his dline is the worst dline in the league he's going to make his dline a lot better with his play calls he's gonna add pressure he's going to do certain things you're going to see a defensive lineman drop at some point where you're thinking you're thinking they're sending house and a d line drops certain things like that that Brian Flores is capable of doing and I think it's more so the 49ers offensive line versus Brian Flores is his exotic looks um when it comes to the 49ers um in the pass passing game and getting uh protection for Brock pretty I think that's what it's it's more about than the Vikings D line obviously the Vikings D line they don't have anyone spectacular along that D line but again it's Brian Flores that it's more so Brian Flores in the D line than anything for me yeah and I I think that that's fair and I that's what I'm curious about you know you just came across Sal Salah Robert Salah a very good defensive mind you're now going against a completely different type of defensive mind with uh with Brian Flores and so when you look at these different matchups you're trying to look for what are the you know what are the maybe the extraneous factors that could end up hurting the 49ers or helping the 49ers one here pointed out by my guy the notorious GV extra day of rest the Niners have to fly cross country extra day of rest we've seen them you know before in some of these trips where they've had to make East Coast trips it's earlier day you're coming off a night game there are a lot of different things that are changing from week one to week two with the practice routine you know you're not going from the nights anymore you're going to the mornings and then obviously or sorry not the practice routin the game routine and then obviously you lose an extra day you have a couple of people that are banged up you have you know some people that are still trying to ease back into it like a Brandon iuk and now you you get one less day of rest how do you think that that could that play an impact and if so is that something that you're kind of thinking about absolutely a huge impact right like anytime a team has one day less one day less of rest and they're headed east coast or they're headed west coast it always plays a factor your body isn't as recovered as the other team that extra day does play a factor it also when you do go across country or you do a go like like the Niners are doing they're going to the Midwest or whatever the where Minnesota is they're headed out there right players who are banged up who do have an injury how does there inflammation to a certain body part how does it react when they're in the plane stuff like that plays a factor for how teams go and I think at the end of the day um the 49ers I have too they're too good of a team for it to let it impact them to be honest with you now they let it impact them last year um playing playing the Vikings on a short week anything always is is a is able to happen too good of a team if you let something like this impact you there's is other issues involved yeah I I think that that's true to me when I talk about these external factors you know the things that could make football games closer than you expect it's things like that you know the rest how is that going to change how's the travel going to change now I believe Minnesota they're also I guess technically making a cross country travel in the sense they they went back home so they're coming off a road game they're obviously going to practice um you know this whole week you get a whole a whole extra day over there and so do I worry about it no but is that something you you kind of have in the back of your mind sure and if the Niners starts slow you know if it takes a little bit for them to kind of get accustomed to it you can understand why and so this game could be closer than you would expect But ultimately I still think the ners talent is just too good and and when you start to question them like this they kind of prove you wrong you know and that's what they did in week one people thought this game could be close um they proved you wrong you know and and and that's I think it's going to be more the same in week two I saw the initial spread at like six and a half points I think the Niners can pretty cover that pretty clearly um here in this in this week yeah it opened up at five and a half um right now it's at six um so it's straight six um but I think it's that's a pretty fair and technically if we're being honest it's the spread's actually nine um home team get three yeah home team usually gets three points so the fact that it's at six is they're they're giving them giving the Vikings an extra three uh that three point so it should be roughly nine if you're if it's a neutral ground which means the ners should whoop their ass like it's nothing nothing more to it um I think the the biggest for me if I'm if I'm offensive coordinator for the 49ers or if I'm coaching the 49ers what I'm doing is I'm attacking the the Vikings in the passing game um they don't got the corners um to compete with 400 receivers and weapons their linebackers um cannot cover George KD that's what I would do um especially with the EXO looks coming um you're going to see more pressure more pressure looks different things U disguise looks Brian Flores is a much in my opinion better play caller than the Jets defensive coordinator and I don't think I don't think solid calls the defensive game plan over there I don't know if he calls the game plan I don't think he calls plays but yeah yeah go ahead so like he's so when you look at Brian Flor he's more he's more known for blitzing and stuff like that you're going to see a different game plan from the defense I think Niners will beat them by by 10 okay okay I think that that's fair um yeah so the Niners it seems like you know at least going into week two they have a positive outlook it's especially off that week one kind of uh you know that the beating that they gave the Jets things are definitely trending up for this team and now it's looking at just Shoring up the small issues that kind of uh you know that you saw in week one you mentioned third Downs third down conversions offensively kind of now as well as stalling those third and Longs the last topic I kind of want to get to is one that I had a had written about just before the season started and one that I'm kind of now thinking about a little more in a more positive way Nick Sorenson defensive coordinator what was your initial uh thought about him and his debut wasn't bad wasn't perfect um I want to see I'm just waiting for the Exotic looks yeah right like that's what I'm are you do you have any exotic looks in your bag um because if you do don't show him if you don't have to which he didn't have to against the jet so he didn't show nothing um but there's no way the 49ers I believe they only sacked um a Jets quarterback once could be mistaken thought that's what the stat line was um one sack on the Jets um that's in my opinion inexcusable um I don't think you if you're not getting pressure you're getting one sack on an immobile Aaron Rogers who doesn't have a great offensive line and that's an issue um now maybe in the first or second quarter you could dial up a blitz to get pressure and a sack I felt like even though Aaron roders wasn't great or the offense of the Jets wasn't great the defense didn't give much pressure and I think that's that's kind of a concern um in terms of you have Floyd you have Bosa you have a lot of good defensive tackles can we can we start dial up some pressure I think that's where I'm I'm at I did see him playing um guys off a little bit more than I was expecting um but I'm not worried about obviously again when you don't have to do certain things you don't have to show it don't do it why show something early in the season when and you're playing a team where you're already dominating them so that happened pretty fast um your defense got a turn over that's huge um so that's that's still stuff and and again too when you do have a quarterback that's able to recognize the blitz like Aaron Rogers you probably don't want to Blitz him right so that's that's also a huge factor into it um if I'm ni sence and you know what I say though I go to the defensive line and I say this 100 times a day this entire week if you are off sides keep going don't stop because if you don't stop and you are off sides they will blow the whistle dead I'll take the five yards rather than a touchdown again or rather than a defensive pass interference because you gave the quarterback a deep shot just keep going Leonard Floyd you cannot stop the moment you stop that's a touchdown man or a big play waiting to happen potential Pi so that's one thing that I would say but outside of that I thought Nick singon and Staley were phenomenal week one I agree I think that um you know you're always looking to see how these guys kind of respond the early Outlook from Nick senson he wanted to drop guys he wanted to play coverage you know and you you did see the early uh the early issues right where Garett Wilson was just getting a little uh bit too much space 49ers cleaned that up you you don't you didn't see too much pressure came at the most opportune times lenon Floyd had two major plays that ended up resulting in turnovers you know or you know turnovers or key plays that ended up killing drives you also have the two interceptions the sorry the the fumble and then the interception you have a lot of different things that ended up going well for the 49ers defense so you have to be uh pleased with what you see the big challenge for soron will come mid-season you know when you have to throw out some of those exotic looks when you need to um you know find a way to create plays or stop those third downs from uh from converting and things like that that'll be the big litus test for senson but in his first game yeah definitely a positive look yeah I think this I'm nitpicking like obviously we want to find like the negatives of what happened where they could get better which I don't like I mean it's good to do it because like when you do see something like that you're like all right where can we get better right as a defensive staff and this what's funny is like I like to think like if I'm in the building right what would I what would I say what would we do um I know a lot of people like oh you're just so negative no the coaching staff isn't looking at the this game plan like this was all great no they're Where can I get better where where do we lack my opinion third down third Downs six or 10 you got to get off the field that's not good enough 60% is not good enough you gotta get off the field you got to get them down to three and 10 or four you got to get that you gotta get off the field um Niners Niners controlled the ball it was like at 38 to 20 um how does how does it look when the opposing offense has the ball a little bit longer right I believe both teams were the the um Jets had 5.4 yards per play Niners had 5.7 obviously the Niners dominated dominated the game but where can you get better I thought third Downs you could have gotten better um getting more pressure um those are like the little things Red Zone efficiency as a defense I know one of them came late late into the game um but they were two for two you still had a lot of starters out there you're two for two they got in the Red Zone they scored twice in the red zone that's something you don't want as a defensive coordinator you hey we could give up one we can't give up two right like that's something that he'll probably be pushing on the guys you guys give up two touchdowns in the red zone that that's me I gotta be better in the Red Zone calling calling different looks but two we cannot give that up um because that's where you lose games if you're giving up touchdowns in the Red Zone frequently um if you're giving up third Downs that's where you lose games and I think at the end of the day Nick senson and Brandon saley are definitely looking at that like we got to get better there yeah no I I agree and I think that that'll definitely be a point of emphasis this week I'm I'm curious to see what the results are now next week knowing okay we saw a little bit of a gap here especially early in the game how do we kind of fix that and that's where those exotic looks come you know maybe maybe you change things up a little bit but yeah ultimately it was a good start from Sorenson that would be probably the Lan gripe you know those third and Longs that you don't want them to convert but that it's a good sign if that's the the main issue you're kind of thinking about going into week two it could be but the thing too like it's how does he respond like that it'll be something like when we do see more of right like how does he respond does he send pressure does he stay in the same look because if you don't St if you stay in the same look and you're continuing to get beat then it's like whoa you didn't learn from your mistakes and that's where you'll see a defensive coach or and a coach in general how they evolve as a season goes on throughout their first year so if he if next if week two comes uh third and 10 against the Vikings and he's playing off and he's not giving any pressure and they're not getting after the quarterback then that's something that's like all right you didn't learn now let's talk about it right so not too worried about it I think the Niners um especially Fred Warner very vocal He he'll definitely go up to saon and and Staley and hey look what the hell are we doing we got to get off the field you guys know this I know this he's a very vocal linebacker as a leader for that defense so I'm definitely excited to see what wrinkles they had yeah no most definitely but week two man week two I'm just excited football's back excited we got to watch game film excited we want get you know Sundays Mondays all of that kind of together obviously Thursday night tomorrow will be a fun game but week two preview thank you guys so much for tuning in markco you have any last thoughts before we head on out uh no if you're bet if you're a betting man take the over on Sam darnold's interceptions um you might want to take the um if I'm looking at the betting lines and stuff like that obviously probably take money line too with the Niners um yeah not sure I would take I'll take money line um and the over to cover the six points I think the ners beat them more by more than six um yeah like that's I'm me I'm into I'm in a betting mood recently so like I'm looking at like the betting odds and stuff like that take the over on the interception for um darnold um don't know what the like the other props and stuff like that are for passing yards for Brock and stuff like that or receiving yards but I would probably take the over on receiving yards for Justin Jefferson as well in this game no matter what they are just because especially if Addison kind of Misses that game clear Bonafide won Donald obviously another week under his belt so yeah yeah that but even then like the ners are up let's say the ners are up 20 points in the third and fourth quarter up 10 you got to throw the ball and if I'm throwing the ball I'm throwing it to Justin Jefferson all day every play um I can yeah no I I agree I definitely agree but everybody thank you guys so much for tuning in we'll be back with a little bit more consistent I'm back tomorrow with Ryan um going on his show for 30 minutes Marco what you got to end the week uh to end the week it'll be Friday with Ashley arihana uh probably do something tomorrow uh on my own um right before uh Thursday Night Football um to just kind of give some keys to the keys to to win this game um week two talk about other stuff
