what's going on everybody it's Jeff gramar with the Albuquerque Journal and we are getting started on our first ever um post game Albuquerque Journal sports live podcast broadcast uh xcast whatever these are whatever these are supposed to be called um we are I guess simal casting if you will on both here on X and also on the Albuquerque journals YouTube page I am in the wonderful home surrounding the of uh of my home while Albuquerque Journal football beat writer Shawn Ryder um just got done with some postgame interviews at University Stadium he will be joining us here momentarily and uh when he does uh we will recap what just happened at University Stadium I mean a lot went on obviously some good and some bad uh end result is all that really matters in some people's minds and the end result is FCS Montana State who is a number four uh ranked team who is one of the top five favorites betting favorites to win the national championship um at the FCS level and was a 13 and a half Point actually in some places it did get up to a full 14 a full two touchdown favorite they were favored to win this game they were not ahead at any point until 10 seconds to go in this game you can look at that as progress for for a Lobos team that nobody around the country expected much out of you could look at it as same old Lobos if you want it is an FCS School an FBS program should not be losing to FCS schools even the best of FCS schools but that's where the Lobos are right now um we will talk about some of the good that came out of this game for the Lobos some of the key plays down the stretch in that fourth quarter in particular that um really cost the Lobos this game I think um a lot of people that watch the game either in person at University Stadium the announced Crowd by the way was 177,000 and some change um let me pull up the uh the exact number here announced announced crowd the starting point if you will for the um Bronco mendenhal era as far as um attendance goes 17,0 314 at University Stadium they they got a show right I mean if you're if you're there for a football game it was a good football game if you're there rooting for the Lobos you did not get the end result you wanted obviously and um I think uh I think it was clear to see that um Devon dampier is is the real deal he's going to be a pretty good quarterback I think it was clear to see there are some weapons on this lobbo offense I think it was clear to see that there were some uh some Playmakers on defense two of the scores the first score of the Bronco mendenhal coaching era uh at UNM fittingly so was a defensive touchdown uh a strip sack and a 41 yard touchdown or return for a touchdown so the first points on the board for the season the first points on the board for Bronco menend and Halls Lobos was a defensive touchdown and and I do think that um you know that's that's probably going to speak to what the identity of this team big picture is is is a bron or a defense first team and they did get one later in the game in fact I believe that um Frank mogano the Sid for for UNM noted uh game note extraordinaire uh noted that uh the two defensive touchdowns in this game matched the previous I want to say like 52 games uh of Lobo football or something crazy like that um they had had two touchdowns in in the last 50 some games or something like that I'll pull up the note um but uh end result is what it is the uh Montana State Grizz let me pull up the stats here the Montana State who was a 13 and a half Point um favorite does come back scores 21 unanswered points and uh does beat the Lobos and that's not a surprise um to a lot of people the the Vegas odds makers obviously were were picking State not only to win but put to win by two touchdowns and the end result was they had 567 total yards they rushed for 362 yards against the Lobos uh the Lobos didn't look bad on offense at all 325 solid yards and they were playing with the lead some I don't know how conservative they got compared to what they may be normally um they they did look frankly a little Villa in the second half offensively uh but I I don't know how much of that is that is what the Lobos are we're still learning about this team so I don't know how much of that is that is what the Lobos are and uh that how much of that was they they were up at 1.31 to 14 on their home field thinking okay you know let's just milk some of the clock a little bit let's do that so we'll learn we'll learn more about this team I do think Devon dampier has the has the feet uh to to do some damage on the ground he showed that today he did have a nice long touchdown run um but he also has the arm to do it and they they frankly can't use him on the ground a whole lot because if he gets injured you know if he gets hurt then uh then maybe maybe we're talking about a whole new kind of offense right so they need to preserve him a little bit I'm gonna pull sea ryer onto the stage right now uh he is done with his postgame uh interviews he is still at University Stadium and um have a fan on over here that I should turn off uh so Sean first of all welcome uh welcome back uh I haven't gone through the scoring summary yet I'm I'm going to I'm going to pull some uh some Fox Sports college football tweets to show the the touchdowns as we go through them before we go through a scoring summary give us the the main takeaway from that postgame locker room or the postgame press conference room rather uh what was uh bronos saying what were the player saying yeah you don't want to say um that they were outright stunned in some ways um but it was definitely I mean obviously you know it's you know when you lose no matter what it's never a great move in the post game um and it wasn't anybody particularly angry or um you know pointing fingers or anything like that I think that's one of the main takeaways there but yeah it was you know it was a gut punch and you could see that from men Hall to Avenger to H Devon dampier they're all the people that spoke today it is interesting that that uh you're saying you know even Bronco was wearing it I I'm not naive I don't think he's he's not a competitor um so in the moment I thought he would obviously want to win but he's been very clear that the this game one this starting point um this is a process this this whole year one really is not about the result on a Saturday especially not the first Saturday um I don't I didn't take any of his talk about that to mean he was trying to downplay the importance of this game or or diminish expectations I I believe him um and in the big picture I don't think he will look at the outcome of this game as as a huge um plus or minus really uh for for the of his program but I am interested to hear that that publicly and visibly he he was he was chook a little bit by this because they were up 34 3114 um did give up 21 unanswered points uh so it it obviously bothered him I'm a little surprised he he expressed that publicly because he's been so clear and so down the straight and narrow line of the result of that first game uh really doesn't matter because this is GNA be a long process yeah and look I don't and like I mean like shook might be even too far right I mean he was kind of yeah was his you know normal self in a little more muted sense um you know the consistent men in Hall that you kind of know just coming off a pretty gut-wrenching loss in a lot of ways I am uh I'm going to go through now a quick scoring summary you got some notes there uh you can talk uh over some of this uh for those joining us by the way on this Albuquerque Journal sports live until we get a a better name or until we get a big money uh naming rights sponsor for millions of dollars uh the name of this postgame show is Albuquerque Sports Live uh we're giving it a try um I am right now gonna gonna give a a try to my first sharing of uh of the screen so we can uh get some tweets on here um and I'm going to go through a scoring summary uh I'm going to go play byplay of just the scores there there were some obviously some big plays I do want to go through some of those um I have three three plays three kind of um moments that I want talk to Sean about after we go through this scoring summary that uh I think really ended up costing the Lobos of the game you you can look to a whole lot of things these are all late game things that I noted but um for now uh let's go through the scoring summary and the the start of the Bronco mendenhal era I you know I kind of think frankly that uh it was somewhat fitting that uh that the first score of the Bronco menden Hall era happened to become on defense and let's see if I can't get the uh the video video of that right here in the first quarter the the offense didn't look bad on the first play but or on the first drive rather but they did have to have to give it up and um when that happened uh I do think that uh there was probably more than a few people in the stadium worried about what would happen and uh this is it right here 335 defense for the Lobos and here comes Blitz a late Blitz and a sack and a fumble and a recovery and it's going the other way Christian Ellis a [Applause] [Music] touchdown all right so Sean that first touchdown um any comments on that you're probably hearing for the first time um my good friend Tim Brando's call of the game um for FS1 I am using just so everybody knows I'm using these tweets from uh Fox Sports uh college football's Twitter account um we obviously did not broadcast this game as best I can I'm going to be using the tweets from them but obviously you can get these highlights on any one of 50 Twitter accounts at this point the Mountain West UNM Montana State whole lot of uh betting sites stuff like that um what do you think uh I I thought it was fitting that the first scoring the first points on the board in the Bronco M and hallera were was a defensive touchdown yeah absolutely fitting um was it a big talking point after the game not quite not really much at all in that sense to be honest with you um just after everything that transpired in the second half but definitely fitting um it's you know that was honestly one of the top of my uh top of my list questions that would have been asked um if you know they did end up winning uh and not giving up you know kind of a 93 yard run that kind of swung things and then a four yard te um but yeah definitely fitting defensive head coach and uh you know yeah so I mean two I think the uh the it they haven't even found the unm's com staff hasn't even found the exact date uh that they had two scoid scores in this same game and they went back through box scores dating back to 1974 so definitely rare um yeah I think the uh obviously Christian Ellis is the guy who did have this 41 yard fumble return for a touchdown um I'll hit play one more time here then we'll go to the to the next um few scores that uh was an exciting and somewhat surprising first half 335 defense for the Lobos and here comes Blitz a late Blitz and a sa and a fumble and a recovery and it's going the other way Christian Ellis a [Music] touchdown all right I'm gonna jump now to uh to unm's um unm's tweet here uh I guess I'm there on the side there but uh I I didn't have a fox sports did not show too many field goals too many punts but uh later in the first quarter uh seven play 67 yard Drive obviously as you can see there on unm's tweet but um but Luke gets on the board and uh we got a 10 10 to zero lead for UNM um with 449 to go in the first quarter um it was a 45 Y and the wind was not blowing which which will'll probably need to probably cover a little bit for later in the game the wind was not blowing nearly as bad uh when he kicked this one tell us a little something about Luke and um go ahead and throw his last name you I'll let you pronounce it um on air but uh is Luke going to be a pretty solid kicker for the Lobos this year do you believe yeah you know uh you know first game of the season uh what he was one for three today uh this this 45 y was his uh his one make of the day I know his career long is a 47 um and uh you know a lot of his focus on this offseason was just becoming more consistent um you know he was 10 for 14 uh field with field goals last year and I was 10 for 14 the year before that the year he became kind of the primary kicker uh Midway through the season if I remember correctly in 2022 uh but yeah I mean for him it's just been a you know you know a big Mark of a consistency trying to uh for him it's been trying to reach that consistency that is desired um unm's one of the Special Teams pillars I believe is uh they want to make uh every field goal 44 yards and in just 100% of the time uh that same goes with pats um and uh you know it didn't happen today but uh that's that is one of the that they they kind of they set in special team guards in that game and three touchdowns Sanders jumped ahead here a little bit uh I I will go a little quicker through some of the scoring I do have the scoring summary all lined up here but I do want to get this one because this is dampier's first touchdown pass of the menal era as as the No Doubt starter um and and he got a tight end involved that you know I think people maybe expected a lot out of he hadn't scored in a couple I don't think he scored at all since what in two seasons maybe um but I do think that he could have a a really good season but uh here in the to start off the second quarter um 1345 to go in the second quarter and UNM takes a 17 to lead on this 12 yard touchdown reception from Trace brookler yards in that game and three touchdowns Sanders was on his way to the portal RPO touchdown time it's brookler again good to see the Lobos getting the tight end involved a little bit there um your thoughts on trace's game yeah what he had four reception today I don't even know that the uh the numbers let me check the the yardage off of it but four receptions 34 yards I think he had nine receptions for uh God I want to say 89 yards total last year uh so you know it obviously they really like Trace uh Trace is the uh de facto tight end one facto he is the the tight end one in that room right now he's the most experienced guy um has the most m game reps um coach has been very high on him since he recovered from a prior injury this spring and all that so yeah I mean he's going to get a good amount of usage and um he's going to get more usage than last year off of everything that we've seen today and everything that we've been told all right so we're sitting in that Stadium now and the Lobo fans are sitting at 17 to zero things are feeling pretty good um that that VI was there a Vibe was there a a was was it a relief was it a wait till something bad happens kind of feel what what would you say it was like at a 17 to zero in the second quarter for the Lobos yeah I think um you know we're in a close Press Box so you know you don't uh you don't get a good a great feel for the crowd in that sense too but you know it definitely like people really you know I think everybody in the stadium kind of like you know obviously was lit up by that Lis 41 yard return and that I won't say it was a a sigh of relief or anything that it was like okay well hey they're here to play and they can play and uh you know all the you know there was that three and out uh in the first half to that first one kind of tempered things a little bit but other than that it seemed like a really good uh good vibe uh in the first half and then you tip to the second half and obviously you know things go way wor in the fourth quarter I will point out excuse me scoop and score is one thing but the field goal drive seven plays 67 yards three minutes um the dampier to brookler touchdown was after an eight playay 68 yard 3 minutes 23 Second Drive um the Lobos were putting together drives uh while they did have a few chunk plays um for the most part they were putting together seven six seven eight play drives that that were scoring but uh Montana State the offense you knew it was going to come at some point and uh Montana state with 1036 to go in the second quarter gets on the board um and I'm curious how quickly the pistol Play Take bot the toss is caught touchdown it's Ryan schlep number 88 he's the third option at tight end I'll actually combine that one with their next score here real quick to get both of them out um this went from came a favorite by the way uhoh Crossing pattern touchdown Mulla boy he was wide open get a road win here today um tell me what uh is this kind of what you had expected um maybe a little bit more of out of that Montana State offense than than maybe you saw in the first quarter um you know the passing wise uh you know not really I was pretty keyed in on the run I will say Tai Mulla had the loudest seven receptions for 66 yards I have ever seen in my life I thought he he bowled honestly he had that huge catch at the end bringing it in uh you know to set Montana State up at unm's four y four yard line and within the five and all that but uh yeah I mean it it it certainly that last one with M there um menal even admitted it kind of felt like uh you know due to execution and a little bit of lack of communication and all that that you know they kind of lost some guys in coverage and that seemed like one of the Prime examples that really hurt them um I wouldn't say you know Vibe wise it was like oh wow we're crushed and they still had a three-point lead and uh you know you still had the residual good vibes from a good start but it was uh you know yeah it was quicker expected kind of right back into it to go back to uh go back down three all right uh I thought it was a really good answer by the Lobos after that to uh to punch one more on um when when Devon dampier with 133 left in the second quarter um had what what's going to be a highlight you know one of those highlights of of the season in in some respect just because this way I go this way nobody knows who has the ball and now the look out more touchdown well done Devon Gardner great call almost borrowing a page from the te all right obviously you hadn't been able to see a whole lot of their offense they were they were keeping that close to the vest um in the preseason a little bit but uh anything about this play surprised you that they would uh try such a you pretty risky play when you go you know that naked on a on a boot with a uh with your quarterback who you don't want to get hurt yeah I wouldn't say it was uh outright surprising in the sense that um you know they've kind of prided themselves uh we talked to guys in the offense about you know like hey you don't know which way it's gonna come from I I do want to say what a that was a really great sell from dampier like a phenomenal sell right there um I don't know if he's GNA getting enough credit um for that sell because that was masterful I mean he had I mean you're looking at that right now I mean nobody was five yards of him um it's a really good play call at the right time uh you know and that's one thing you've heard about offensive coordinator Jason Beck uh you know likes to certainly take advantage of his opportunities when he's got him and uh he certainly did in that spot last score here for the UNM Lobos was in the third quarter and it was a it was another uh a defensive score so uh um I will play this year I will mute it so we can talk over it a little bit um Gabe Lope is is a key to this defense and he had the strip sack there so what do you think about this play and uh it seemed like a really good start to what you would want out of the Lobos coming out a half yeah I think if there's one thing that um you know that you really want to take if you're a lobo fan and you kind of want to be heartened by is the fact that like they got a lot of pressure on the quarterback today um that's was not something that happened a lot last year you know they have a lot of similar guys on the interior D line like Kyler Drake right there uh Gabe Lopez is uh really their one edge with a ton of meaningful game experience I mean he played every game last year I believe he started every single game as well there were kind of questions too about uh you know how those new edges like okiki and all that okiki olon funme number 17 how that would all kind of play and you can see okiki right there kind of you know he's getting in and um mot's Force to his right and then Lopez is right there to uh end up knocked at three and you know just a good heads up play from Avenger right there too for the second score so that does it though for the scoring for the Lobos but it but it looked good right you're you're you get through three quarters you're up 31 to 14 on a on a team that some people thought was going to come into your house and beat you by two scores uh things looked good belief wise all that kind of stuff but Montana State as you noted and as you expected um they were a team that could run the ball right you you you knew they could just kind of keep grinding it out and um eventually uh you knew they were out of the gun Lots in trouble 21 unanswered and uh it comes from their quarterback um did you expect a lot more running out of him that was uh one thing I was looking for because you know in a prior conversation I had had with uh Montana State beat writer Victor Flores he said that you know with malat being the kind of go-to guy the number one starter not you know qb1a or QB 1B uh this year that uh you know Montana State wanted to take a little bit less of the running burden off of him and they wanted to make their offense more balanced in general because they were an amazing rushing offense last year and they were a good passing offense but not a great passing offense they way more deep shots because you have people loading up the box you know this year they wanted toh from what I'm aware of they wanted to really build on kind of that short intermediate passing game and um one thing I noted in one of my stories was you know honestly like you know they want to do that and I think if the opportunity to not run a lot a ton is uh presented but you know when you have that you have a guy that can uh make plays right that like that he has that uh I mean that quickness that just kind of Pops off the screen they're going to go do it and uh you know this was a huge play right here honestly I mean what was that third and five and you know that score I mean and this this cap a 10pl 80 Drive which even though you end up the they end up scoring which is Big obviously they duh not not anything um Earth shattering there but they they had kept doing it with these long sustained drives and the Lobo defense was kind of keeping things in front of him for the most part doing a good job of it um and then you know that cuts the lead at that point to uh 31-21 so it's a 10-point game you can tell that's obviously certainly within strike Striking Distance with um at that point how much time was left uh 1339 still plenty of time to to race 10 points but uh it took a little bit of time uh before Montana state was able to uh to come up with this one and and I want to talk to you about out this 93 yard Adam Jones uh touchdown play because it was one of only two big plays Montana state had all game they if I'm looking at their stats here big plays uh they had one actually was the only one I'm sorry it was the only uh I'm looking in the uh the big play thing here in the stat sheet in the 53 yard play yeah I'm I'm foolish I'm looking at the wrong side here um but uh the Lobos had the one big play Montana state only had four which is a considered a 10 yard rushing play or 20 plus yards of uh of passing and anyway uh they didn't have a whole lot of big chunk plays and uh this was one that broke it this was a oneplay 93 yard drive and uh this was one of the few let Downs that uh I think the defense really had big playwise and if if you go back to to the three things that I'm marked down as to what cost ended up ultimately costing the lowo of the game this was one of three was this touchdown run right here um I would also say there were a couple drops Luke weisson Caleb Medford both had drops at at receiver that that really were costly um the y song I thought had a good very good game overall and then the the Miss field goals I thought were costly as well um this isn't the final nail in the coffin um this only brought Montana state to within three 3128 with 435 to go and uh of course the the nail in the coffin um I will post right here uh the video of and this was after a pretty long but pretty quick drive from yes he did and uh only 10 seconds left on the clock and they take their first lead of the game at 3531 I imagine whoever was left in that Stadium the the air was kind of and it it was really windy at that point but the uh the wind was sort of uh sucked out of that Stadium at when that happened yeah definitely I think that's uh that's kind of you know we probably overuse as Sports Riders the term you know the air was suck St out of the building or was stucked out of the stadium uh and it definitely kind of had that feel I mean absolutely stunning um and uh yeah I mean you know that 93 y from Humphrey I mean that was just a really really well walked really really uh you know really good play overall um but uh you know I mean this was set up by that great McCulla catch right before um kind of shouted him out earlier too but uh yeah definitely uh you know pretty stunning big gut punch uh for UNM all right Sean those are the scoring highlights um of the game big picture uh what's what's the takeaway here um again I've prefaced it enough people get what I'm going for here um you could look at it one of two ways and it kind of comes down to I suppose it depends on on on who you are right like are you g to look at this as a half glass empty are you an optimist uh what what do you want to look at at this final result as and um is it a good was today a good thing for the Lobos or was today because of the end result just a a a bad outcome the outcome was was bad was today a good or a bad day for Lobo football I think it was a good day in the sense that I don't think it's a stretch to say that there was uh you know there was a lot of people that were pretty excited about the start of the Bronco men in Hall era I also think there was a good chunk of people that were maybe a bit uncertain about what that could look like they maybe saw that they're playing Montana State and that they were 13 and a half Point uh underdogs and that it's just like oh I mean that's it must be really tough and they're starting with a offensive line breaking in a uh quarterback that had played last year but hadn't really been the goto guy I I mean you I think you saw it all over social media in the sense too I mean you know you had that you had two defensive scores you had that great Dan TD that great play call you had that fourth and one stop which you know if they if they won probably would get a whole lot more in this kind of postgame show um you know I it seemed like people were way more invested than they had been um you know that I can even remember when you know there was some kind of hope last year in terms of when they're playing you know really I mean I thought the Hope kind of tapered off hardcore uh after the New Mexico State game but I think um they showed that they have a product that people want to watch um like you said the outcome you know was not with a lot of people well not with fans players coaches whatever desired uh but I think they they showed that they have a product that can be good I think the negative side if you want to look at the negative side is that it wasn't it wasn't consistent and that a team like Montana state that is you know look it's not like uh you know they if Tennessee Tech put up what you know 362 total Russian yards um then I think uh we that would be a really really really really long season Montana State's one of the best Russian teams incs means they're one of the best teams in the country in that sense um so they just could not go up against and really stop what that team's calling card was um how much concern you want to take from that I think that uh I think that's in the eye of the beholder but yeah I think the positive is there and that I saw a lot more people invested in the product and uh it's a pretty solid product but it just needs more consistency whether it's the run defense whether it's coverage whether it's uh receiving game whether it's quarterback play too I mean it's just across the board and that's one thing that menal kind of mentioned you saw that there were inconsistency uh in execution just across the board and um if you want to really kind of boil the game down to was lost you could probably pin on that right there what do you think about a couple comments here on the on the drop passes um again I don't know let me pull up his final numbers um I actually thought Luke weong for the most part had a had a good game but he was one of two receivers I thought that really Dropped In His Hands kind of passes um in that fourth quarter that that really ended up costing uh costing a couple drives that could have eaten a little bit more time off when when the go-ahead scores with 10 seconds left and you have a couple drives stall because of drops I I'm curious uh what do you think about those two drops yeah uh honestly seemed kind of shocking in the moment um I mean really I think it was the for me it was the Medford one that kind of stuck in that that was really a huge hugely consequential drop um look I it's it's not like those guys are going to get dropped in Tod because of this I mean they're going to be you I mean they're likely going to be UNM leading receivers in terms of receptions and receiving yards and receiving TDS throughout the season um it just seemed uncharacteristic more than anything else and like you said I thought weong had a really really good game too it just happened in that moment Devin uh dampier when he was talking to after said it was you know in some ways was just we just got to clean that up uh you know we have to make sure that we're making that play in critical moments and there were two critical moments they didn't make that play um so yeah I mean they're hugely consequential at the same time though you could kind of Point your finger back to uh well I mean you gave up this much on the uh the Russian you know to you Montana State's Russian attack and if you didn't let mot get around that left Edge for that 15 yard TD um maybe those drops wouldn't have mattered so much if they would have just had a field goal instead so I will uh do a quick skim again on these final stats uh net total net yards 567 for Montana State 325 for New Mexico rushing was 362 for Montana State uh 152 for New Mexico now um take that a couple different ways again Montana state is is a fantastic rushing team um don't ever want to give up 362 I know that uh but uh don't I don't know that you have to read a whole lot into that final total um with this team they're they're G to rush for a lot of yards against a lot of teams that's totally yeah yeah so uh I will say as you scroll down this this stat page any stat that that jumps out to you uh you know I'm looking at total first downs fairly even 27 to 20 they had more um you know rushing first downs passing all that kind of stuff is is fairly even any stat that jumps out to you that uh was was telling in this game that maybe surprise you or or you would really just look at as uh being a really key part to this game just looking at uh the sheet honestly um honestly in a in a positive sense uh zero sacks of zero yards and Devon dampier to be honest with you I think uh you know the offensive line to me um we had seen good stuff out of them in the spring we had seen good stuff out of them during fall Camp uh but it was probably my biggest question and I I told people when I was talking about you know about this game with them it was just like look you know we can make our predictions and we can think this is how it's going to go once we see this offensive line you know we see that offensive line live We're not gonna have a good feel for uh what UNM can do and I thought honestly I mean it wasn't perfect but I thought they held up pretty well in a lot of respects and um you know some of this back stuff it's also the fact that Devon is able to get out of the pocket in tricky situations pretty well but um you know and it's you know it's not like he played behind a bad line last year either I mean that line had a lot of dudes and really good ones at that but I think that um just looking at the sheet right now honestly that's probably uh I would say that's my surprising stat I'm I'm posting some of these these comments um some of these fans though I I I I disagree with with Timothy Fuller's comment here that close yeah that's fine two two two missed field goals absolutely worth talking about um but to say we you know we meaning un M I'm not on the team I I'm the Aggie covering the Lobos remember um but his comment is that the Lobos got crushed in all three phases I I I would disagree with that I I wouldn't say they they that the Lobos are crushed in all three phases by any stretch this was a 3531 game against the national title Contender at the FCS level yes um but certainly would not I would not say this was a crushing um in all three phases of the game by any stretch of the imagination I I will ask you Sean was there a little bit of surprise especially that last M field goal um that UNM had that uh he even attempted that uh with the way the wind was going there you were at the stadium how how bad was the wind at that moment it seemed pretty bad not quite the last one so much um I'm seeing box gaming has a a question about the second misfield goal and he makes the point it had a ton of win factor and the goal posts were literally moving I think it was a 42 y uh the goal post were literally moving and that that's a question I I posed to menal I mean I think it was fourth and seven or fourth and six um and I asked him was it you know was it of a discussion to uh know settle for that field goal or were you guys gonna go for it you know considering the wind you know it's a brutal cross and that wind came out of nowhere I think everybody's seen the clip by now uh because we heard it in the Press Box I mean the TV fell off the the top of the Press Box or whatever and all that but yeah and you know men and all said look there was a discussion it was really quick we didn't have a ton of time in that situation but there definitely was discussion um and they opted to go for that field goal so I thought that second one was uh was pretty surprising just seeing Twitter definitely drew a lot of questions honestly just given it's not an ideal spot to kick into maybe you would want to try but it's also you know how many four fo seven plays do you have in the Pro sheet not um so it's not quite an ideal situation but uh definitely you know the field goal is worth questioning in some regards that went for sure uh John waffle pit obvious pit fan um and big fan of the Albuquerque Journal sports live said he didn't know Mexico had a football team um John this is New Mexico um yes there is a New Mexico and uh uh gotta you know another silly comment here bring Danny Gonzalez back he's the right coach for this team you may love her or or not Danny Gonzalez that's obviously not happening um the Bronco menen Hall era is here um I I do think that for the most part with time a lot of people will think uh this this probably wasn't the worst of uh of games by any stretch because they showed a lot um and lost to What will What many expect to be a pretty good team um but the outcome is the outcome so um I I do want to also point out that that wind though in the second half it did get pretty crazy and did you see any play calling not the field goals but did you see any uh anything that maybe did they quit throwing the ball when maybe they should have did you did did you see them adjusting because of the wind not in a uh you know insanely notable way in the sense of what was it 20121 or 2022 there was that bills Pats game with like 50 yard gusts or whatever and it was just like we're just going to run the ball every single play not in that sense no I did ask uh Noah Avenger it was you know and it's it's a dumb question but I fully admit that but you know did the win play a role at all in anything I mean did he did you guys were guys whoa what was the deal there and he said no um so that just shuts that dumb question down pretty quickly but um not quite in the uh in the play calling sense now and it didn't really seem like that quick sidebar here was Winters Grady at the game um there were three basketball recruits that I'm sure Shawn was uh very much paying attention to the recruits in the stand but I can tell you that uh three Lobo basketball recruits on official recruiting visits um there there may have been some others on unofficial visits I don't know I can tell you the three um recruits that were on hand uh for the first half they had to go kind of do some tours and some other things in the second half they did not see the second half um but Winters Grady uh who's a four-star recruit um down in El Paso Jaden Leverett is a is a guy that's a three star recruit but a big big time recruit who who a lot of schools are are quite interested in out of El Paso chape in high school and uh then obviously the the big- time top 100 recruit Winters Grady by the way is a top 100 as well um visiting but uh the other one is is out of Los Lunas out of New Mexico he is going to school at a prep school in Arizona this year Dream City Christian and that is Jaylen Holland um Wilson Holland's son the athletic director in uh out in L Lun is also a a college basketball referee also happens to be a high school football position coach of yours truly at Alam mordo high school and uh Wilson and I will be singing the AL mordo High School fight fight song for James yodis hopefully many times this season um as Al mordo who is 0 and one in their football season but hopefully y'all be singing it a lot this year um I will uh I will point out too though that as far as um recruiting goes and all that kind of stuff when you see people on the sideline this and that a basketball team may recruit 50 kids May recruit 30 kids May sign two of them so um it's it's an interesting thing to cover fans get excited about it until they signed they haven't signed so um those but those three are are three really good basketball recruits three highly regarded recruits that were all three on official visits this whole weekend still on their visits Winters Grady Jaden Leverett and Jaylen Holland so Sean let's spin this thing forward a little bit you got a you got a road trip yourself to go cover a football game that uh should be pretty interesting um not only did the did the Lobos open with the national nationally ranked FCS school um but they now get to go play a nationally ranked FBS school and uh there might be um some interest with a particular assistant coach on that team they play at Arizona next week in Tucson so uh tell us a little bit about what maybe fans should expect from week one to week two out of this Lobo team and any storylines that might be of interest yeah to be honest with you uh I myself don't even know what to uh expect from week one to week two with un M it's it's a new era uh I mean and I'm excited to definitely document the response and how that looks um but you know I'm going to be seeing it for the first time I've never seen uh UNM win a game in this era in that sense and I've seen them lose a game and I don't know what the response is GNA look like um and I don't mean to say that um you know players won't get up for the next game or something like that I'm talking about just like treating that and uh you know kind of turning the page and what that looks like Craig comment is interesting right I mean the whole is uh now looking pretty deep right because if you beat Montana State um I don't know what the uh you know the line would have looked for Arizona but now uh the spread for Arizona I mean I I'm gonna handicap this off the dome right now but unm's obviously not going to be favored um you know then you're gonna go to Auburn after week and then they my guess is that that'll be a nationally ranked Arizona team I I'll take a stab at it and I think it'll be at home will be about a 20 point spread um I think it'll be around a three touchdown spread if this was a two touchdown spread now that I think about it it might be more than a three touchdown spread it might be more like 24 points um not a whole lot of games usually get too too much more than that FBS FBS level but but who knows um I do think one game under your belt in college football means more than than in a lot of other sports but the way they just lost too you you have to see how they respond I I I don't doubt that Broncos is going to be able to handle it these are a bunch of college kids too that just lost the 21 unanswered Point kind of come from behind so um yeah we got Craig Johnson here uh leaving a comment now that he sees Arizona already at 31 that makes a whole lot more sense than than 21 which I which I initially said want to say it it felt a little low to be honest I didn't want to say it but um yeah and um you know obviously you know I kind of uh I kind of ignore that part in terms of talking about the response but yes there are storylines in this game uh former un coach who has been mentioned multiple times in the chat today um you know uh is now the Special Teams coordinator over there and uh former UNM starting running back who was Sensational last season I think is a line to be uh Arizona starting uh starter uh when the Lobos take the field in two times so yes certainly um you know interesting story lines there and uh we'll see how that plays out what would you like to see on the field uh regardless of who they played what would you like to see out of the Lobos next week that maybe you didn't see today or or more of the same like just to kind of have a a sense of confidence that that they are on the right path that they got over this loss um the way it happened what what what would you think is important to to come out and do uh you know early next week I I think I don't know about you know the early start and stuff like that this feels like such a coach answer but I think like the big thing is consistency I me like they might not beat Arizona but if they come out and they you know they do you know they do some things consistently well and uh maybe they get overwhelmed by certain aspects of H certain you know of Arizona's talent and the like too then you know that is what it is to a certain degree but I mean certainly you know as long as uh if you're Fanning you're looking at as long as they're taking the fight to Arizona and they are kind of you know amending some of those inconsistencies that we kind of saw today then I think you should be hearten and all that um you know I I right now I I wouldn't pick um you know UNM to beat Arizona obviously but um at the same time eer things happen um and I'm not trying to open the door to that to them being them but I'm trying to open the door to you know playing okay against Arizona G have a good showing in that sense too um but yeah I mean today um I don't believe in the uh the whole you they needed to have this one today and all that because you know that's not really the tone that menal is taken on in terms of all this that's I kind of asked that Richmond question earlier in the week about when uh he lost to the FCS team in the country uh when he was in his first game at Virginia too um and he said it was a painful loss but it's a foundational loss and um I'm I'm expecting them to treat this one today similarly all right this is uh for some of of us I'm going to wrap it up with this you got some work to do obviously um and so let's put a bow on this with this I I will say that um on the bright side for some of us that watch these games with without a fan perspective as much as some may believe or dis not believe that that that we do this I can tell you this the UNM Lobos at one and0 and against the spread standings in the whole country are tied for for first place in the country against the spread they also hit the over today in this game um so those are things I will be tracking and uh I will also point out that um this was this was the start of of a process that Bronco himself even kind of acknowledges is going to take a while so um I don't think there's too much to read into this game I think there would have been a whole lot more to read into this game had they won comfortably or lost decidedly and they didn't do either one I think right in the middle which is what they did didn't get the win but a nice close game against a really good team but still a loss is uh end it it lends itself to some optimism but it also still the outcome is the outcome so um I think uh I think it'll be interesting and um one other positive for for Lobo fans from Craig Johnson the Lobos do lead the nation right now in defensive scoring so um there you go the the Lobos lead the nation they're tied for first place in the standings in the whole country against the spread and uh they also lead the nation in scoring um thank you guys for all your comments for for join joining us uh we're going to try and do these and uh just this is our our test run here so um thank you for being a part of this and uh before we sign off we're going to do a few of these by the way maybe during the week every now and then but definitely going to try and do a postgame one of these um every every so often and uh Sean uh anything else you want to sign off on before we uh before we hit the end stream button yeah I think um to kind of build on what you said earlier you know I do think there regardless I think there there is a lot to take from this sense um I do kind of wantan to tweet it out I do kind of want to build on one of the quotes that uh Bronco had where he said when you're speaking to teams after a game you know you're rarely accurate in terms of what you're assessing and all that um we're speaking right now I don't know how accurate we are to be honest with you I mean we are very uh very very uh to the end of that football game so um looking forward to our bringing more analysis to the table answer any questions that uh people have and uh thank everybody for tuning in thank you guys uh let us know give us some feedback not only once we hit end stream here but uh you can send both of us feedback on on social media all the time on XI many of you know I am on it way too often Jeff grammar I spell Jeff wrong and I spell grammar wrong at Jeff gramar um Sean I don't even know what he does with his handle uh remind me and last name wrong as well um nice little tan we got going in the Journal sports Department it is good and uh so um thank you again for joining us and Sean I didn't even bring up the fact that you don't eat grapes and you don't eat blueberries didn't bring up any of that weird stuff so uh we made it through a show without bringing that up um until next time thank you guys all for joining Sean
