Nevada about to kick it off to get this game started he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 so smu's offense takes the field and here he is guys anytime he takes the field he is in complet control with this offense and David he gives defensive coordinators nightmares because of his ability they're going to have a hard time slowing him down no they just doesn't have those weaknesses those flaws the whole Playbook available and he is a dude I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all halfway there on first down it's second and five [Applause] quarterback on the keeper ripping through the defense works his way to the 41 and that is plenty to give him a first down he might not be the fastest runner that doesn't mean he is a reluctant Runner it worked out well there and I like that because I need a running threat from whoever's back there you got to be willing to tuck the football take off and go chew up yardage otherwise it makes it very predictable and very easy for a defense if you're willing to do that makes it pass to marker what a Nifty run there to pick up the first down every offense wants to be able to run the ball and be physical especially on first down and you want to create second and short third short or just get first downs like that run right there and the Mustangs will snap it on First and [Applause] 10 they're going to ride this running back able to SC three yard out of that one somehow it's second and seven now that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven from the gun to G looking for room they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one everybody talks about DBS they talk about dropping coverage and not being physical that DB begs to differ great tackle coming up playing physical like a linebacker now facing a third and long to the air it's Stone a strike downfield and he almost ran away away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play one of the things that makes this guy so dangerous is how good he is after the catch if he's got any space around him he's able to burst he's able to make people miss and get extra yards for his offense you saw it right there from the 17 yd line it's first and 10 from the Red Zone he's going to throw it with the catch it's Bailey he stopped just short of the goal line at the one and exposive play has him set up and a big key on that throw to the slot receiver guys is putting the ball out in front the location of the throw is what helped that guy get extra yards after the catch they use those backto back explosives to set him up first and goal he'll pull it on the read and he's sprinting he'll take it all the way touchdown Mustangs it's what makes this offense so hard to stop when you've got an athletic quarterback you got to worry about him in the running game and there on the option he makes the right decision keeping it and he caps off the opening drive of the game with a TD on to attempt the try and with the extra point they get the first seven of the game they put together an 81 yd drive and they capped it off with a one yd plunge about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and it'll come out to the 25 no attempt at a return the Wolfpack offense takes the field and will get a peek at them for the first time in this one as we take a look at our impact players for this one what are you looking for Jesse for a guy to make an impact well these are simply put the leaders of this football team and generally games go how these guys play if they make plays they've got a shot to win this one no doubt they got to show up these are the team leaders these guys have to play well if they're going to win the football game after the incompletion it's second and 10 from their own 25 Lewis to throw a little release to the back and that defensive penetration gave him no chance and he is ridden out of bounds they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one third and long and he'll try to throw for it fires and picked off couldn't find much room on the return but what a costly misc and they've got it at the 26 yd line most defenses are lucky if you have one good covering Corner fewer are lucky if you have two they've got three DBS three corners that can play at the same time in their nickel package that they feel can go monoo with anyone in the country and you saw it on that last play coming away with the pick the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work boy David they would love to stack another touchdown on top of that last drive and this offense did such a good job on the last Drive everything in Rhythm moved the ball down the field didn't make those mistakes Jesse and they need to do it again on this one yeah you're right they had the defense on their heels you wonder what sort of communication was going on that sideline sort of changes were they able to make because they got to stop the bleeding right now that kind of pick up on first down and you can take a shot here on second and [Applause] short caught in the back field it's Marilyn he is down at the one a terrific run after the throw and catch and that's why QBs love their tight ends so much right especially when they're athletic because they make short throws turn into two long Gams because of his ability after the catch it's so unique and special he is dominant in this offense the Mustangs are threatening on first and goal he'll try to get it in with the Run he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple yeah what a great job by the defense you got to understand it's physical time right they want to run the football and they start getting inside the five nice job getting penetration getting the tackle for the loss can the defense stop them again on second and goal the option look he'll toss it he pushes it forward all the way to the two yd line and with the stuff there Jesse on second down this little third to midrange you got two downs what are you thinking here maybe getting your quarterback out on the perimeter and giving him a run pass option see if you can get the defense in a bind this defense was put in a difficult spot but they've made it tough and now the off just hammer it with this running back again and he knows is his way into the end zone a quick strike just as we expected yeah and quick strikes are easy when you got such great field position obviously when the offense starts in such a good spot puts the defense in a bad position and the offense takes advantage lining up to tack one more onto that lead and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 a very efficient five playay scoring drive and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two the kickoff team out there set to Bo way coming out with it it's Haze I know he thinks he can house every return but sometimes you just have to take a knee as he stopped at the 14 he'll do it himself not much working there it'll be second and nine well the QB decided to keep it on that one and listen if you had his athleticism you'd want keep it too almost every time they run these types of option plays but he's just going to have to do a good job of understanding when to hand it off when to pitch it and try to keep this defense on their heels and read his keys he's got a lot of talent just got to make sure he's making the right decisions moving forward never breaks stride and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up and a great job by the QB finding the running back getting the football where he can do some damage after the catch most importantly get the first down Nevada going quickly quick hand off and a really short game before he gets a whole bunch of company from the defense I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense did a good job getting him down there but they got to do a great job gang tackling because this is a guy that can break tackles and turn those types of plays into home runs he's got it again they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and that seemed a little off from the start didn't it that was a big time play and it was off from the start because of the play he made and I don't think it would have mattered who was playing running back there was absolutely nowhere to go here they come facing third and long from the 40 Lewis wants to pass fires to the wide out got his Man Down field they've got it inside the 40 at the 39 as they pick up the first down that's really got to make this offensive coordinator feel good calling plays you get on third down early in the game and he should be having a lot of confidence now moving forward in this game calling place this Nevada offense really has it going got the first down looking for more gets him on the ground at the 28 but not before a big 10yd pickup and here we go if you're an offense you got to get that round game going so you could have some balance and then you give it to your quarterback Palmer and let him make some plays down the field later on yeah exactly and know coming into this game this offense knew they were going to have to someway somehow at least establish the semblance and the quarterback is toast back at the 35 when it's a playaction pass that quarterback he really has to sell the fake he can't tell his offensive lineman's getting beat right away while he's selling the fake he had no shot really need to find a productive play this time on second and long he's looking to throw just a short pass to the tight end and they pick up just a few on that completion great job by the def defense winning those early Downs now you get him in a predictable situation third and long you bring in more DBS more speed more fun Blitz packages get to have a little fun go get the quarterback this will be the eighth play of the drive but a great opportunity for the defense to get off the field quarterback can't pull the trigger and down he goes at the 41 and the defense pays that blits off with just what you want putting the O in third and long and a lot of people get concerned conservative on Third and long and drop a lot of people I like bringing pressure tell the QB you better get the ball out of your hand fast cuz we're coming for you they Blitz gets home nice job by the defense being aggressive on Third and long the wolf pack will line up to punt it away first punt of the day and he'd love to lock him up close to their goal line and that punt will Sail Out of Bounds let's see where the official spot the SMU offense is headed back onto the field Jesse a very productive Drive last time wound up with a touchdown yeah mixing and matching play calling really well nice balance on that last one Dave we see what they can do here in this next Drive yeah and I don't expect anything different when you put together a drive like that I would do more of the same keep the pace keep it going sixy pickup on first down leaves him with second and four out of the gun to give to the back and knock him down after a gain of three to the 23 and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knockbacks and limiting his carries we'll see if they go back to the run here on third down quick touch pass to the receiver fakes his man out runs through a tackle good Paul good execution as they move the chains and they have a first down at the 38 in these touch passes it's so hard because there's always action off of it right if I fake this pass and I can run it up the gut or I can throw it and I just spread me out and make me defend so many things and you can tell they got on the edge quickly got the big first down [Applause] out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back that's a really nice play it's impressive when it's first down and the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little frease for your running back got three on first down it's second and seven they'll put the tight end in motion they'll try the Run they make the stop but this running game moves to change as they get the first down and a great job by the offensive line if you're going to run the ball right at the middle you better control the line of scrimmage you can see the center the guard the tackles doing a good job getting on their guys just enough where this running back can get into space and make the big game and the Mustangs have it with a first and 10 it's a reverse and the ball comes out what a disastrous play no look what I found I'd say that's a stroke of Good Fortune the offense keeps it that is a nice break for the offense man those are plays that you don't think about down the road but those those are turnovers if they just bounce a little bit in the direction of the defense you're so jacked up you create momentum juice it could change the game that's a great break for the offense shakes off a tackler still running at the 40 and chunk plays are the name of the game and they one here before the defense finally makes the stop man that's excellent blocking there on the left side of the line they were able to get great push get off the line create a little bit of crease for that running back they just created a wall he had all kinds of room to run I might I might go back to that one and call that one again it works so well scanning the field it's Stone unloads to the wide out touchdown SMU and they add six more to the board with that trip to the house so much about the passing game is about timing execution communication and these two that's a virtual textbook there no doubt about it and the receiver making plays for his quarterback being Dependable running the route to the right depth consistently does a great job running this route great result because of it they'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown and he takes this from inside the five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up and it's just the first quarter so it's the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense going up top on first down snagged in the middle it's Howell and he's knocked down but not before moving the chains wow the quarterback knew he had to get that one to his receiver quickly on the end route did you see the velocity on that throw they'll snap it from the 47 on first down the hand to the running back just what they were looking for and he's got him set up in business at the 35 with a first down first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game they're down to the 35 on First and 10 Lewis to throw oh he's ready to take a shot and this is dropped incomplete pass he had a huge gain in his fingers and he couldn't hold on good awareness by the defense in this situation on the field you know there's coordinators that like to try to take shots deep down the field and catch a napping but the defense was ready for that one offense gets set for second down he's looking to throw finds the tight end and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few look you can't take away everything right so you give them that and rally and make a solid tackle yeah and a lot of times in zone coverage I like when I can get all the eyes on the quarterback I like when I can see the routes and see him develop in the middle and you could tell they had keys on the tight end he wasn't going anywhere after he caught that football that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they're third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion it's wise not to be too greedy and they'll go ahead and send out the field goal unit no no good couldn't find the range on the field goal couldn't cut into the deficit and they are still down by 21 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work really good balance on that last Drive they mixed it up all over the place Jesse yeah how nice to to the defense on their heels because at this point they don't know what's coming at him they had problems stopping everything that last drive there so I think this defense would come back with a little more aggressiveness I mean they let them have what they wanted now they got to dictate to this offense a little bit more that's the end of the period andu has the lead they came out and jumped on them early in the first let's take a break and look at the first quarter stats it'll be a first down from the 49 yd line might as well run him until they stop him he's got it again well this offense came into the game knowing they wanted to be physical they wanted to establish the line of scrimmage and they're running downhill right at this defense and they're turning out positive yardage early solid pick up of four on first down it's second and [Applause] six out of the gun they'll run it inside and the defense finally makes the stop after the sweet and good gain another good run man he has been picking up yards in bunches today Jesse showing off all the skills and he's showing no signs of slowing down David this guy just gets better as the game goes on he is a beast the Mustangs will line it up on First and 10 motion from the offense leaves it with the running back and a nice run there before the defense finally makes the stop when I go into every game I want to get my running back going I want to get the ground game going and he has this afternoon over a 100 yards now showed you a little bit of everything in the Run game and that's why this offense has been humming got eight on first down now looking at a second and two the give to the back that's why they love to feed this senior running back he'll find those extra yards there's really no secret to it David when this guy's running well well this offense is so hard to stop it opens up everything and he's having a great day showing you a little bit of everything in this offense has got it rolling on the ground they have declared their intentions on this drive keeping it on the ground it's first and 10 Again from the gun they'll try the middle man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out operating in the Red Zone here on second down the hand off to Johnson and they try the middle of this Stout defense and they rise to the challenge linebackers in today's football obviously guys have gotten smaller they got to play in space more cover fast guys out on the perimeter but how about this linebacker coming downhill and making a physical tackle in the boy they'd love to pick up this conversion and go to work with a first and goal back to throw it's Stone he's got and he's into the end zone touchdown Mustangs [Music] now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead they took it 68 yds on that drive and the score comes on a 12yd touchdown pass kickoff team is on the field they'll try to drive this one deep he'll start the return inside his five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field we talk about settling for points but sometimes when you have to settle for nothing David it can be demoralizing yeah it can definitely be frustrating and I think it leads you to say maybe I go for it more but Jesse I think this offense just needs to put another drive together and just finish Stronger Yeah and and be a little bit less predictable too especially as they get closer and closer down to the endzone after the productive first down play it's second and six he's looking to throw grabbed over the middle it's Smith and the catch was one thing and the Run even better a big pick up on that one when you play zone coverage everybody drops back everybody has eyes on the quarterback you're not really looking at the wide receivers a lot of times so they can slip in those little cracks and the quarterback can really make precise throws great job great play great throw great game it's first and 10 from the 38 yd line hands it off can't get him to the ground turns it on in Midfield he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down I bet that running back's eyes got so big when he gets that hand off going to the right and he sees the huge holes yes please the defense just didn't flow quickly enough all of the blockers had leverage on their men man that defensive line has to get off the ball a little bit better get some penetration to stop that outside run they'll give it to him again and he'll pick up one it brings up second and nine and sticking to the run I tell you what a lot of teams that are really good are really stubborn and they continue to run the football even with little success so this offense is going to continue to focus on running the football you can tell didn't get much on first down it's second and nine going to run it it's Maz that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it a little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it that is just a sideline credit throw catch tow drag everything you want wow and what a great job by that quarterback finding his open receiver on third down you know guys one of the most telling stats at the end of the game is third down conversion percentage if you're a great third down team it's invaluable to your offensive success and that's why teams drill third down so much in practice trying to get to him slips a tackle keeps it himself and gets the first and the first guy couldn't get him but the second one does but not until he picked up the first down it's just so hard to stop there is no rhyme there is no reason he just scrambles around makes people miss and the next thing you know you look up and he's 20 30 yards down the field and there's nothing you can do about it Nevada comes to the line on first and goal Lewis wants to pass he CAU it and he won't be able to push his way in he stopped at the one that's a good job by the drag rout there understanding it Zone coverage so instead of continuing to run across the field he settles down into an open spot making it easy for his quarterback looking for just one more yard it's second and goal he'll run it to the right looking for the goal line that play just never had a chance a knock him down for a loss of five now listen the defense won that play as an offense here the key David you can't go backto back negative plays you got to be smart with the football here looks like you're going to have to throw it you just can't force it you got to make sure you're playing with that clock in your head can't take a sack and I think this is a situation where I spread you out I get more speed on the field I make the defense to Clare I see what they're in but I'm definitely throwing the football and they've got him down after the short completion but they inch closer and closer to per I want to get my running backs the ball in space as much as possible and sometimes it doesn't work in the running game but I can throw it to him I can try to create some space out wide dump him the football let him make some catches see if I can't get some big plays out of it is perfect after putting three on the board the kickoff unit ready to go here he comes from inside his own five and the returner runs out of real estate as he goes down the SMU offense is headed back onto the field that running game was impressive taking them right down for a touchdown last time David yeah just muling no secret play calls just simply we are more physical than you and we're pounding the football right at you Palmer so if you're on offense this next Drive take a look at their safeties and see if they're creeping up into the box because of your success running the football this might be time to take a shot down the field in play action after picking up a couple it's second and eight they give it to him again he kept those legs moving got three out to the 19 yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you C clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge so third and short from inside the 20 you convert here and this drive takes on a different complexion looking downfield it's Stone working the middle it's complete and oh he was Off to the Races after the catch and they finally drag him down defenses throughout the week study every third down situation you got to be ready for they do how they do it and then be able to adjust great job by the offense so far having success and the Mustang have it with a first and 10 movement here from the tight end from the gun the running back looking for room and he broke one tackle on the way to a solid pick up there I think tackling is about effort most of the time it's about how much passion how much physicality you can bring to get your guy on the ground refuse not to get him on the ground that's not a big back you got to get that guy on the ground you can't let him pick up an extra couple yards and stay ahead of the sticks they'll Run play action fires to the big fella and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up right second quarter getting closer to the half offense is still having a lot of success stringing some first downs together defense is going to figure something out before they get to halftime the Mustangs are moving quickly down the field they'll rely on running behind the big left tackle here he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and the defense is going to have to have more plays like this he has had a ball game so far running wild all day long defense finally comes up with a stop maybe get a little momentum here over 100 yards already in this game so if I'm on defense here I'm adding more guys to the Box anticipating that they're going to continue to give this guy touches today and he really needed to hold on to that one but it was not loose and third down is coming tell you what that was a lightning fast decision you could tell he knew what he wanted to do right away makes the decision but maybe his footwork wasn't a little bit good and the pass wasn't where he wanted to put that thing I know that seventh play of the drive coming up but a long way to go on third down dropping back it's Stone pressure is effective from the defense they knocking down just behind the Midfield stri at the 48 yeah that is a great job and listen this quarterback's had success he's already thrown for two touchdowns we got to make him feel uncomfortable this is still early in the game nice job by the defense getting a hit on the quarterback and making him think a little bit and the Mustangs will pun it away on fourth down he ought to be able to use his first punt to pin him deep able to keep them from getting a return and the ball goes out of bounds they're going to mark it right around the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field and to settle for the Chip Shot field goal last time Jesse they'd love for this one to pay off bigger yeah it just comes down to execution too did a nice job out in the field stalled a little bit once they got down to the goal line so they just need to be a little bit more Chris Pier did yeah and listen I I think the first part was the most important part you got to put the drive together first to get down there now when we get down there focused on execution and getting six points after the run second and medium he's looking to throw fires to the big fella trying to tackle this guy's a business decision as he gets it up to the 29 I think that time offensively you're just trying to take what the defense is giving you right they're playing Zone coverage you got your big fella just working right over the ball it's an easy pitch and catch just take the profit and let's keep going ball spoted at the 29 here they come on Third and short off play action and they got him for the sack you got to be impressed with this defense early in this game guys they've got a big lead because they are getting after the quarterback they've already generated multiple sacks they thought coming into this game they could take advantage of this offensive line and that game plan is working to perfection the wolf pack will have to bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away no return coming he'll call for the fair catch the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work they'll have another opportunity to extend this lead after punting last time David to put that punt behind you it's it's over let it go get back to what you were doing that built this lead P yeah and defense obviously they won a few Downs uh that last drive so we got to put them on their heels here maybe mix up a few Personnel groupings and try to show them some pictures they haven't seen yet didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 keep it on the ground and without that spin move I'm not sure he would have gone very far at all but a solid pick up on the play Keep pounding away at this defense and make them play the run if you can get this many a chunk they're going to have to commit more guys to the Box more guys to the run then you open it up for the passing game this defense will try to force a fourth down on Third and short from the 45 on the option nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry the Mustangs will punt this one away this will be the second time they've had to kick it away he'll call for the fair catch here Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them the big pick up on first down leaves them with second and one the lone back's got it fighting off the defender and he'll be taken down but he does have enough for the first down and listen the offensive line has to do their job but a really good job by the running back understanding where his hole is go hit it get the first down don't mess around nice job following his hole getting positive yards lining up from the 34 on first down Lewis to throw fires to the right wide open downfield and they'll do more than move the change they'll move that thing more than 30 y down the field before he's finally stopped and this defense is going to have their hands full because they're going to need to be comfortable with guys one-on-one on islands in the perimeter of the field and they're just going to have to make better plays than what we saw right there they knew this offense was going to try to be aggressive got to need better effort in the back end for this defense moving forward they'll throw it on first down fires to the tight end and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short gain I like this tight end he does a really nice job on his route running he's been beating man coverage he can find the soft spots and zones you got to get him involved got some of the work done on first now let's see what they have on second down he's looking to throw catch in the middle it's Howell they're able to keep him out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the two after the big play in the passing game this is a receiver who's so dangerous once he has the football in his hands that's a simple slant pass but after he catches it he's able to work in the middle of the field finds the open green and get the first down and now a chance not only to cut into the lead but play it just right and maybe the other team doesn't even get a chance chance to answer and the quarterback is knocked down back at the 13 there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he's looking to throw didn't have much of a choice there but to get rid of it this off just has to find a way to find a rhythm here they're playing at home and they want this crowd to stay involved and be an asset in the game but they need to start making plays they can't keep throwing incompletions this early third and goal from way back there Lewis wants to pass finds his big tight end the defense going to stop the clock with the timeout they want to make sure they have everybody on the same page you know the tight end is going to have to do a better job of separating and giving his quarterback a place to go with the football that time just couldn't create it and as a result as soon as he made the catch he was brought to the ground setting up fourth down it's good he could have hit a string right in the middle of the uprights there so they get the field goal now about to kick it away and you get a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things on the run from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they're going to open this drive with a pass he's got an open man and he gets it to the 45 yd line and that'll be a first down quick timeout from the offense to save precious seconds how nice is it as a quarterback when you don't have to throw post routes to get great stats no I can just throw it quickly to one of the fastest players in the entire nation and let him burn this defense grabbed in the middle it's Maryland that's about as close as you can get to that marker and it will be second and just a few breaths away from the first down the offense burns his third and final timeout of the half and the quarterbacks buy his Lonesome on second and inches looking downfield it's Stone trying to beat the D deep oh he gets down field for the Big Catch and he'll take it all the way could didn't bring him down touchdown SMU this guy is officially a problem his second receiving touchdown of the game nice job by the offense dude if I've got a matchup I like continue to pick at it until they stop it lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they push the lead out a little further quick strike offense on that three playay scoring drive and they finish with a big play a touchdown strike from the 46 they're just about ready to kick it away from inside the 15 here comes the return he Mark him down at the 27 that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the halim update thanks guys a first half that saw a little bit of everything there in Reno and we've got to start our halftime breakdown with this Superstar running back his elusiveness his raw power this young man is the total package and his ability to catch the ball out of the back field is a differentiator a lot of guys can hit the hole this kid can hit the hole and hit the home run in the passing game and with that let's send it back to the guys inside Mackie stadium and the Mustangs will kick it away to crank up the second half on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field got blown out in the first half and now just desperate to find anything to generate moment snatches it on the right and the explosiveness the big gerain gets it to the 49 yd line well if they're going to get back in this game they need more plays like that that was something that was missing in the first half explosive plays in the passing game and they get one here trailing early in the third quarter let's see if these receivers can make more plays like that as this game goes on that big explosive play carries them into plus territory they'll snap it first and 10 from just across the 50 from the gun leaves it on the inside with the back they stop him just a link or two short of the first and man what they can do on second down here and that would be the definition of first down success putting yourself in a good position it's second inches I can do whatever I want next I can take a shot down the field I can run the football and get a new set of downs like nice first down execution Lewis to throw moving keeping the eyes down field Nifty little Scamper on this one enough for the first down and he slides in safely second and short is a great situation to be in and look at him he drops back to pass the football he doesn't have to throw the football he wants to be aggressive but he can just take off and scramble doesn't have to take a chance great being ahead of the sticks Nevada comes to the line after getting the first down he wants to throw quarterback extends the play at the 20 he's got space good run on the play and he slides to avoid the hit Hey listen it's important at that position to be able to be good off schedule everything's easy when it's on time you can get the ball out but when things break down and they get off schedule you've got to have a guy back there that can make the right decisions he did exactly that down to the 16 yd line it's first and 10 from the Red Zone looking for a space fires into traffic intercepted going the other way and he's got room he's at the 40 the 20 he's at the 10 and he has taken it all the way back touchdown Mustangs just one moment and all of a sudden the Fortune's turn you're in a position where you're about to give up points and now you flip that around and you put points on the board perfectly executed what do you do in an interception first guy blocks the intended receiver everybody else starts the for the wall where the ball's going nice blocking nice interception nice return for the touchdown he'll try to tack on one more and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead they're lining up to kick it off after the pick six and that defense will come out feeling it he'll bring it back from inside his five nice nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field this possession will be a test after squandering that long drive throwing a pick six Jesse you're right reys I think this is really dependent too on the leaders in this huddle right now to step up and help this offense get back on Pace here on this drive yeah and this defense is frothing at the M they're excited they're jacked up they just made a big play they got that goes forward this time on second along from the 14 pre- snap motion quarterback trying to get a re gets it out quickly he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down that quarterback has a hose that dude could throw it through a car wash and not get it away great job of putting that ball on the line to his wide receiver and that last completion left him short of the sticks it's third down Lewis wants to pass finds his man down the middle and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep them from getting the first down love the way he didn't just run to a spot he found the cushion in the zone and got himself open for the first down yeah and you're taught to find that space don't run right into a Zone Defender who's sitting there looking at the quarterback and looking at you so much creativity with routes now and of being able to just have subtle moves One Way come back the other way nice job by the tight end finding that hole in the own and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it they'll try again on second down after the incompletion he wants to throw it again flips it out in the fra and the defense had that one well covered just a short game there well it's important in this game this offense gets the running back involved out on the perimeter in space where he can do some damage that time they got it to him throwing the football picked up a couple of yards but it gives the defense something to think about Ball's at the 29 defense can taste getting off the field it's third and long from the gun wants to pass throwing right right on the money to the outside he dragged the toe and how about the ball placement only the receiver could get it yeah it was a nice comeback route most important part of a comeback route dude I got to sell you vertical like I'm running a go and then I sit down and I come back to the football catch a nice route by the wide receiver this Nevada offense really has it going looking to go up top on first down quickly complete and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there I love the anticipation on that throw by the QB on the out route you got to throw it before the receiver comes out of his break nice work trying to get a rhythm in the passing game now on second down moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand got his man out of the back field he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down you know it's a nice throw by the QB there when you're throwing to running backs you got to make it easy on them so you want to put it right on their body make the catch simple and let them go to work like they did just there getting that first wolf pack will have first and 10 wide receiver coming across in motion Lewis to throw and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf there's nothing better than being a defensive lineman and a defense period that pressure the quarterback that gets hits on him that make him feel uncomfortable especially when you come into their building and you get everybody really really quiet that's a great feeling from the gun give on the inside third and long coming from the 27 yard line you can make a field goal from here just don't take a negative play from the gun wants to pass lets it fly deep down field and good coverage there to knock it away and deny the score got to give the defense credit on that play taking everything away forcing the incompletion now it's decision time fourth and short and you're in field goal range what do you do here now on fourth down they'll settle for a field goal try and he'll need to curl this one in from 44 yds out on the right hatch between the uprights it's good and the field goal is good they get three on the board but it really doesn't matter much in terms of the deficit they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it away he'll bring it out it's Smith delivers the contact really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 from the gun they'll try to impose their will moves it out to the 34 yd line a nice 15 yd gain on that one and listen if it ain't broke don't fix it I I mean I love teams that commit to the run and when it's successful keep running the rock yeah David I I think this offensive line right now they've got a lather going they're really sort of getting in the groove and flow of this game they're just getting tremendous push at the point of attack it seems like every single time they decide to run the ball man these plays are really really simple really easy to run I like it just drop back as a quarterback see the big fella wait for him to get open hit him get a nice positive game and now on second down for this offense give to the running back nowhere to run on that one loses four on the carry and sometimes for the defense it just takes one play right to create some momentum obviously this guy's been eating them up he's got over 100 yards rushing on the day but finally David they get something positive here in the Run game defensively but you kind of know that coming in he's going to get his such a great back and he's had a great day need to put more plays together like that right there and they fail to hook up on third down you know the defense just has seem to quite have an answer they've come close to interceptions like that one there but they haven't registered any so far they've given up a few touchdown passes they're just not quite able to make the plays they need to against the pass in this game the Mustangs will try to pin them back with the punt fair catch called for and made Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field David they had to settle for a field goal last time move the ball down the field Jesse just couldn't put it in the end zone in that red area where they needed to be a little bit more efficient I think they just got to do a little better job of executing on this drive and let's see if they can punch it in for six this time didn't get much on first down it's second and nine back to the ground with the running back that hole closed quickly a pick up of one to the 15 if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum Lewis wants to pass shoots it to the left complete downfield and they were looking for a chunk play and they got it the explosive picks up more than 30 and he just continues to put up numbers and that number is now over 300 this guy just throws completions man the ball doesn't seem to touch the ground he's back there he's making the right reads right now he is locked into what this defense is trying to do they'll go to the ground we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up kept it on the ground on first down now back to the line on second down wants to throw got his man quickly tackle is made after the first down this Nevada offense really has it going they'll keep it on the ground to the right nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry that DB had a different story he had something to say coming up making a physical tackle lost yardage leaves them looking at second and 14 he's looking to throw quickly to the tight end finally brought down at the 31 it's a pick up of 15 yard on the play and they've got a first down well this defense has tried to find ways to disguise their coverage and mix it up to try to confuse the QB it's not working though that last completion he's now get over 300 yards passing the wolf pack with a first and 10 here looking to move it through the air finds his tight end looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out little bit more to go after that last completion they'll try to pick it up on second down Lewis to throw makes his connection he was smelling that end zone but they get him down at the four after the big pass play a really nice day from this quarterback over 350 yards passing now Jess he's had a plan all game long he just seems to find his best matchups and he's done an awesome job giving his guys opportunities to make plays Nevada comes to the line on first and goal looking to throw it again quick strike complete and good coverage by the defense just a short game you know it's funny I know running backs often times are afterthoughts when it comes to the passing game think about it this guy's been making people miss his entire life taking handoff so why wouldn't you try to get him involved in the passing game as well you just saw in that last play how dangerous he is after the catch don't try to power it in they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one man and that's a frustrating play when you go in reverse near the goal line go to go situations Palmer you got to get those positive yards you can't go backwards if you're trying to get a touchdown you know I'm TR ing in my quarterback here to make the right decision looks like we're going to have to throw it right but if it's not open just throw this thing away you don't want to take a sack lose extra yardage here just be smart with the football he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out this is a really big play for both teams fourth and goal from the two they'll try to pound their way in and he's going to take it to the house touchdown wolf when you get down here in the Red Zone when you get close to the end zone and you get go to go situations you've got to be physical and I love teams that can run the football they run the football hand it to the running back he does the rest puts it in the end zone getting set for the point after hit that one with some aggression for the point after precise Relentless execution on that 13pl scoring drive and finished to deal with the short touchdown run from the two they lining up to boot it away and he takes this from inside the five finds just enough space to cross the 25 let's mark it at the 27 yd line the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work they'll give it to the back these little gains can start to add up as he gets it up to the 34 and they say a quarterback's best friend is a good run game and a good running back I think he agrees over 150 yards on the day I don't even think I need a quarterback the way he's been running the football all game long eight- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short they'll keep it on the ground and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play maybe that stop shows this defense is tightening up especially in the Run game the offense frankly they've been able to do whatever they want to do they just handed the ball off this having success left and right no sir no Moss get it together a third down try for the offense unloads quickly solid work and execution there they'll have a first down as they mark it at the 40 man he had to get rid of that thing I don't even think he had time to find the laces but he picks up the first down yeah and that's a great job you know third and short the defense is bringing pressure he sees the pressure gets the football out and gets just enough for the first down the give to the tail back and they'll stop him just short of the first down just inches away from moving the sticks man when I can run the football like that on first down and create second and inches and stay way ahead of the sticks and and be in a position now where I can throw the football or run I will have a lot of success on the offensive side of the football from the shotgun the inside G and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land well this defense obviously knows they have to be able to stop the run now in the second half if they're going to win this game and you wonder if they were able to make some tweaks and some adjustments at halftime maybe getting some more bodies close to the line of scrimmage to give themselves a chance to come back in this game fast motion from the offense touch pass on the Jet Sweep they convert on third down as he gets it to the 46 yd line I love the idea and I love just finding ways to get your best players out in the open field this pre-nap motion and using it to their advantage on that last play I think that was a nice call and the Mustangs are rolling down the field to the ground with the back you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six you know it's so important for offens is to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down as they get set to snap it time winding down here in the quarter he'll keep it himself oh it's loose they recover their own fumble somehow who knows how they got that thing back that's the end of the period and SMU has the lead they've built a comfortable lead after three quarters of play Let's Take a look at how we got here they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down power football with the Run he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well the defense finally able to make a play getting a tackle for loss they haven't had many of those today because this running back really has answered the best they knew coming in they were going to have to give him the football force feed it to him and let him go to work he's done that well over a 100 yards rushing in this game and the defense just has not had the answers consistently for him a solid pick up there before the defense is able to make the Stop and that play is essentially like a jet sweep right this offense is going to run the football conventionally they'll do it between the tackles they'll do it outside but there's a lot of different creative ways they can get their play makers the football in the running game and I think that was an example of what you saw right there they've been very good at moving the chains on third down two for two on this drive this time they need six they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and a great job by the linebacker you could tell starting to crowd the line of scrimmage get up there in the line of scrimmage see it diagnose it get in the back field get the running back on the ground for the tackle for the loss now on fourth down they'll try to come away with three looks as if this will be a 51 yd attempt oh the attempt is no good well they missed the field goal that's about the only thing that hasn't gone their way in this one Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field opening play of this drive comes from the 34 wants to throw on first down and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down well this guy must feel like he's run into a buzs saww in this game he has been under duress all game long and that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the pressure of this defense and that's why they find themselves down by so much here in the four and that was some kind of collision between a couple of big bodies there and he stopped from getting the first down so an example of a tight end doing a little unheralded work to set up a much better third down situation and I like the QB here Reese I like the decision where I understand let's get this football out let's get some positive yards and then get to third down and we can still have a better situation now because we got rid of the football and took the yards over there draged down to the turf but not before getting the first down well they pick up the first against Zone coverage the biggest key there is the quarterback understanding that a it's Zone but B what kind of zone is it is it one high safety is it two high safeties and then you know instinctively where your best throw where your highest percentage completion is based on what type of Zone coverage it's going to be got his man on the right nice stiff arm there but the defense still able to stop him for a short gain and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle and you're going to win this game Lewis wants to pass they're working that left side and the defense makes the iMed a tackle but he has enough for the first down these routes have some reads and adaptability built in and the big fella found that cushion and made the play man it's so awesome how much offenses have evolved they know exactly what they're getting where to sit down quarterback tight end on the same page gets the first down quickly out to the tight end and that is good versatility there and a big hit from the backer in pass coverage well here's the problem problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverages and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock it's going to be hard now for this offense to claw their way back in this one just a short pass to the tight end wrestled to the ground after picking up the first down I like that big reliable security blanket and that's what tight ends are a lot of the times they're just usually big huge guys that if I throw it anywhere near him he's going to pluck it catch it and give me some positive yards Nevada comes to the line after getting the first down he'll just keep slinging it it's complete on the right side he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down just a quick Rhythm throw there and really good use of the tight end yeah good use of the big fella I mean go through your progressions real quick quick you can't find anything get the easy gain don't take a shot down the field all the time take those shots later but take those easy wideopen opportunities to get some positive chunks quickly complete and he gets it down to the four yd line before he's finally stopped a terrific run after the catch if you like the stats and I know you do he's over 400 yard passing now yeah if they win this game he's getting a game ball there's no doubt about it this this guy has been on fire from the very start of this football game he's just been throwing bullets all over the field they'll use the running game on first and goal and he gets it back to the four yd line no farther than that no gain on the play what a great play by the linebacker did you talk about filling a hole defensive line does their jobs he comes in the hole says sit out sir can the D deny them on second and goal Lewis to throw fires to the end zone touchdown Nevada and they take it in for six more points lining up for the pat right down the middle they put together a 65 yd drive for the score and they cap the drive with a four yd touchdown pass after that last score the lead still at 19 pretty big deficit as they are set to kick off from inside his own 10 he'll try to help out their field position and the coverage team able to make the tackle the SMU offense is headed back onto the field for Jet Sweep pass pass the sticks and he may get more a little more space open up that Playbook even more as they pick up the first down out to the 30 it's so hard for a defense to have to stop plays like that because it really forces you to play with great eye discipline you see the pre- snap motion defense doesn't know if he's just running across the field and he's going to run a route if he's going to block or if he has the football that time he was able to outflank the defense and hurt them to get that first down just working and poking and prodding and finding his way up to the 36 man that's the advantage of having a good coaching staff that teach these players in this type of situation with the lead late in the game you want to stay in the field of play and keep the clock ticking they do that after that nice run wide receiver shows motion quarterback touch pass on the Jet Sweep running with power just a Savvy veteran productive run from this junior yeah and way to be creative way to get the ball in the perimeter really quickly get some speed outside all you got to do is secure that edge and you're just trying to get that first down nice job nice play call by the offense they'll line up right at the 48 yd line on First and 10 wide receiver now comes in motion leaves it with the back and they'll stop him after a minimal pickup this just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven they'll go right back to him he is tackled but it'll be a fresh set of downs this guy's been special today coming into this one they thought they had an opportunity really to get him going running the football and he has delivered you've seen the speed the vision his ability to break tackles well over 100 rushing yards in this game and that's why they have a nice lead here late now on First and 10 from the 35 out of the gun the inside hand off looking for a crease and how about that interior defense stuffing the run for nothing well you love to see that from the defense right it's like Ben don't break they've given up a bunch of plays on this drive but now that they're getting down close to field goal range you're seeing them start to stiffen up there yeah and plays don't matter anymore yards don't matter all that matters with these defenses nowadays is points and limiting them using the quick game he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense defense just hasn't had an answer for this guy he has been on point this is about as good as I've seen him play at the quarterback position and here in the fourth quarter with the big lead he's still taking shots the Mustangs come to the line with a new set Downs give to the back he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three it's going to be tough sledding for the offense here they're trying to ice this game by running the football and bleeding the clock they've got a pretty good lead here late in the game but the defense knows the run's coming right so they're going to be loading the line of scrimmage getting stops like what they just did be interesting to see what the offense does on this next one they'll give it to Johnson just having these d off of him like popcorn he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this offense first and goal from the seven and the defense down in this game they just can't do anything to stop this offense at this point David right now they know they're going to be trying to run the football and try and Ice the game but there's nothing at this point it seems they can do yeah and it's frustrating I got to sell out man I got to bring as many guys to the line of scrimmage as I can I got to find a way to get this ball back to my offense the the clock is not my friend and them running the football is only going to run this thing out quicker I got to find a way to make something happen strip the football do something defense roll up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming back to throw it's Stone and the throw and catch was good but you got to do it in the field of play and he couldn't quite keep that foot in bounds sometimes as a quarterback when you're feeling a rhythm and you're feeling yourself you just want to keep taking shots right this guy's already thrown three touchdown passes and let's hold on just a minute here as the officials are going to have a second look so after reviewing the undisputable video evidence the replay booth has decided to overturn the call the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead they marched 72 yards and they CA the drive with a four- yd touchdown pass kickoff team lining up to send this one away bringing it back really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Nevada takes over as the offense returns to the field comes out throwing on first down can't hold on he had him right down the middle and he flat dropped it let's see if they go back to the air on second down he's looking to throw gets it out fast he's brought down at the 29 after a 10yd gain that last catch puts him over 150 yards receiving on the day Reese this defense has no answer for this guy and it doesn't matter where he's lined up or what routes he's run or who's been covering him they just can't stop him now on First and 10 from the 29 he's going to pass caught over the middle it's Howell and he was just a couple of steps away from taking that one even further after the catch this guy's having a game that feels like half a season for some he's over 450 yards and he is so dialed in with his offensive coordinator and play caller with what they want to do and how they want to attack this defense it seems like every single snap he's read the coverage he knows exactly where to go with the ball got his man in the middle great veteran presence in the pocket he knew he was going to take a hit on that one nice quick throw there and it's so important for quarterbacks to be able to find a rhythm and to be comfortable and confident you want to just get the ball out quickly make it an accurate and easy throw and you could tell that these two guys they rep that play in practice practice all the time and it's now showing up here on Game Day Lewis wants to pass he finds his man good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch that was a nice pickup running the drag route and finding that quiet soft spot in the zone yeah drag routes not only work against man coverage they work against zone two if you can find the soft spot and the quarterback gets it to him early he can turn up field and you saw that right there they're bringing heat not in lock step there with the receiver the timing on that throw and on the route was just convoluted messed up from the beginning and you see quarterbacks and wide receivers in the off season always working on timing and always working on throwing on air but when you put a defense in front of them now things start to speed up a little bit a lot of times you'll see these little mistakes and where it looks like just they're not on the same page all the time he's got the back in the middle they the stop not a whole lot of ground picked up there and they'll have work to do to get the first down this defense is going to have to be careful not only do they have to worry about this guy running the football but they've got to keep their eye on him when he runs routes too he is a versatile back it's third down now and they ought to be able to get off one more play before the two-minute warning and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down and the offense got themselves in a tough situation third and long so hard to execute when the field starts to shrink but the good news is they got a field goal in their back pocket it's fourth down now and this likely the final snap before the two-minute warning he'll try to throw and pick up the first down he's got it and they convert and they finally get him to the ground an easy conversion for this offense defense not exactly the perfect fourth down call there now the chance to pay off that big play from just outside the five Lewis to throw and he dropped it it looked for all the world like that would be a catch and he just got too excited and this is just one of those days man where everything has gone wrong right like they just haven't been in a rhythm they haven't they haven't got it going and never built the momentum this is this is one of those days you learn from from you try to grow from a lot of things that we're going to show in the film room that people aren't going to like but hopefully you can learn from it and do better next time and he takes it in in the end zone for a touchdown a little window dressing here at the end of the game that dude's really big how in the world did they lose him because down here he does a lot of blocking and you play a lot of man coverage in the red zone and what do you do you peek in the back field and you lose the big F I don't know how he lost that big of a guy but he lost the ling up to add another and it's up and good so it's an 80 yd drive and they get it into the endone with a 6yd touchdown pass the deficit is huge this one is all but over they'll keep trying and line up for the onside kick he's able to grab the football and the hands team gets the job done the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work what a feeling this has to be David in complete control and headed toward Victory formation yeah no stress under a couple minutes left in the ball game well in and these are the ones Jesse you like to just run the clock take a knee whatever you want no doubt they're going to love watching this game film too there's just so many positives to take away from this and this is the kind of performance today that is really going to help this offense's confidence picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down wide out in motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep has the sticks in still on his feet finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down I love that play call and I love the timing of the pre- snap motion because the quarterback was able to get it to the receiver right behind the offensive line because of the timing he was able to outflank the defense that puts him out in space where he's able to use his speed nice job with the pre- snap motion and timeing touch pass on the Run man the defense you your breath when this receiver has the football out in space you have got to make sure you're playing with outstanding Pursuit nice job there but as this game goes on they've got to keep an eye on this guy and make sure they know where he is at all times and the Mustangs have push it inside the 20 leaves it with the back slam to the ground but not before he gets the first down the Mustangs have it with a first and [Applause] 10 for for for for for for for for for for for for for for e for for for for
