[Music] nah [Music] [Music] n [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] good afterno and welcome back to the Italian Grand Prix this is the circuit let's go through it three sectors 5.7 km 3.5 mil 72% then on the throttle around this place 18 turns breaks down to three chicanes the parabolica and a couple of lesmo Corners named for the village that's nearby or town I'm not sure we'll find out we'll get an answer C5 C4 C3 tires available to those in the field all got a good run out we're going to be doing qualifying simulations we're going to be having long run Pace as well and we're going to be taking you to the end of the royal park where you get to the corner and then this place for a century has meant one thing and one thing alone and that is speed and talking of speed Kimmy Antonelli what a start he had in life to Formula 1 straight to P1 straight on the soft tires flying lap number two into the barrier he certainly won't forget today he's gone qualified the car for Formula 2 if you want to catch up with that session quite a lot of entertainment in that session you can watch it anytime on F1 TV a reminder of the conditions the track temperature is 42° the aad temperature a comical 34 it's definitely a day to be a commentator in an air conditioned combox I'm Alex Jake joining us once again is jolian Palmer jolian what your thoughts and Reflections as we stand before fp2 well firstly it's a very nice place to go racing even on a hot day the park around is beautiful the steeped in history and Banking and Monza down the road is a city the third largest of Lombardy the uh the region that we're in and it's actually becoming a big uh sporting city as well they've got a a football team now in Sera a I believe they say in Italian but uh aside from the football quite a big fp2 session coming up we didn't get a great reading did we into fp1 there was a lot of track Evolution quite mixed Times Obviously Antonelli was the big story and they're still fixing that car which may well further hurt George Russell cost him more time in the car into fp2 disastrous start for uh for him but in terms of everyone else grip level look low everyone's going to be dialing in as you can see the sweat on the brow of char lesmo is a town we've sorted that out uh just to pick up on Julian's point oh you were talking about lesmo and not not the third largest city of Lombardi but I love the fact that you had the detail ready to go uh monza's football team very strange Stadium they've they've got a giant stand I'm staying near it they don't have stands at the end but they have a giant stand that runs along the pitch so very unique design and uh a unique place that we're going racing at this weekend Lando Norris second in the world championship looked quick earlier on we discussed a lot in fv1 didn't we about if he can go back to back if McLaren can win here the complete opposite what we saw with the high downforce required at zand bort that would really really signal great times for the formed team of the formul One World Championship closing in on Red Bull in the constructors you had a look a moment ago at Franco colapinto if you weren't with us earlier on he is for one's newest driver he's going to be in the Williams for the final Nine Grand Prix of the Year we're looking at valry botas because he uh he had a really good session earlier on very impressive fifth fastest for for the saber outside of Mercedes ready for green light will Buxton thanks Alex yeah if you're a George Russell or a Mercedes fan you will be very happy to see that the car which was up on stilts has within the last minute or two been lowered down to the ground that's key because that means they're getting ever closer to being able to send him out the very fact they're using heli tape on the side pods means that they're on their attached the engine cover which stands just below Olivier's camera uh in front of us that'll be one of the last pieces they put on but just getting the balancing act right as you can see just on the front Corners there making sure that everything is where it needs to be is the suspension is secured both at the front and the rear he's not going to get out for the start of the session the team have done an astonishing job to rebuild the car so quickly and I have no doubt that pretty soon and certainly within the session he will be able to join this man his teammate leis Hamilton out on track beautiful timing thank you will looking down into the garage at Oscar pastro having a great run in recent times fourth in the driver Championship behind Char Clair which is exactly the state he was in in the Dutch Grand Prix when he had many laps behind the Ferrari couldn't Force Away by there is the Prancing horse there is the the colors of the team that they all want to see they've got a another tweak of delivery I love to see the drivers we had Daniel Ricardo waving at a fan earlier on in the pit Lane and charlot Clair acknowledging the grand stands and all those draped out in red as he takes the car onto the circuit two times on Pole Position around this track and a onetime winner memorable day around the circuit in [Music] 2019 so I actually never knew that there was a lesmo village for all the times I came to Monza Town my apologies town do you know the other why the other Corners as they are Alex uh C Del roia where we are at now no go on is named after a nearby stream oh nice okay then of course the ascari chicane named after the legend Alberto escari himself parabolica is because of the shape of the corner it's a parabola here we are right on Q and there is Franklin colapinto who went through the gravel at that part of the circuit earlier on let's learn as we go today I'm enjoying it not only for the drivers on track but also the the facts and the stats about this place and the lesmos used to be called the cver de which was the the curve of the Oaks and you know when you when you see the shots as we stay with colapinto around the lap so he's coming out of the uh the first chicane the Ropo let's see if they're listening to Palmer let's find out up towards de roia the second chicane where there's a nearby stream somewhere in the vicinity this is where mik hackam was famously in tears wasn't it back in the day as he crashed out and now we head to the the lesmos named after the town nearby and you can see not so many trees either side but I love the the overhanging trees on this circuit it gives so much character and that is why it used to be the uh the C what did I say de now it's the lesmos as colapinto heads down towards aari yeah they tightened those uh the lesmo quarters up in the in the '90s part of the massive raft of safety changes so they they they' tightened the angle of those Corners uh they have relay the curbs but the actual geometry of the circuit uh f shicane a scar chicane that's all exactly the same new Surface new curves which changes a scar dramatically um I was watching the onboard of Antonelli's lap from earlier on I cannot believe how hard he ta to scar on his second push up wild stuff amazing kin goes over the line into third Joe guu goes into fourth Williams have a good record around here in in recent times everyone's on the medium tire for the time being including seven time mod Champion leis Hamilton and that's nice because it will give us a preliminary read into the the various Paces Hamilton sweep through the three part ascari Corner quite a wide birth to the curbs on the first and second part there you can take some more of them than you used to be able to but amilton steering clear and then taking the final part he's early to the gas out of the parabolica he's got a little bit more margin on the outside for when he uses the soft tires later on and drags the last bit of performance out of the car but that's not a bad laugh anyway for Lewis Hamilton first line lap for him on the medium Tire in the Session 1 minute 21.6 George Russell continues to look on very good Poker Face I have to say from George earlier on we cut to him in the garage after his future teammate stuck it in the barriers and he did not give a glimmer of an expression about how he felt about that yeah a it's such a tough moment for for Russell you give up your car for an fp1 and you got to trust that the guy's going to bring it back in one piece and hopefully as a bonus give some good feedback as a direction to go on the setup and and so on as Norris gets in valter bottas's way heading down towards the uh the first chicane there through they both go not knocking any of the poistar ballards won't be happy about that but I don't think that'll be making significant there for the Norr you don't usually get big moments penalized like that in practice Yeah Russell now it's one thing not getting the feedback that you want off an fp1 but it's another thing having your car crashed and then missing what is it 6 minutes now Hamilton already top of the times dialing in for another lap whil George has to just watch on no helmet on yet so there's clearly a longer wait going on for him yeah reduced time not the Friday that George Russell would want the driver who finds himself going into this weekend looking for an upturn in form obviously cross the line first back in the Belgian Grand Prix but but lost that win so not a huge Hall of points in the last five races for George Russell in contrast tolando Norris who has been consistently fighting for victory he's heading to the first chicane of the circuit where there's a little bit more room at the top part that might help on lap number one we'll find out on Grand Prix Sunday for the 75th World Championship running of the Italian Grand Prix Norris through C A Grande and there used to be a big bridge here there is just an advertising ping now Roger named to the stream as uh as informed to us all by Jan fmer max staing out there as well so we're going to get like for like on the medium time Hamilton top of the time are back in the pits pastri went second then Norris right out towards the gravel but not quite dropping a wheel how many people have been through that gravel it was looking like a beach earlier on in Formula 2 qualifying it was it's quite something as Norris gets right up to the grass he's absolutely maximizing the track width everywhere slightly squirm me through the middle of ascari and he's on the fastest middle sector of anyone the Stafford is about to come through just behind and we'll get a comparison this is like for like Norris of Ven and looks like Max is well off it that timing screen was was to be believed we have a look in a few moments time Kinto another lap for him he goes into seventh Alex Alin on a flyer at the moment fastest first seor of anyone so far you're on board where Lando OES hitting the front of the field he's 300s of a second ahead of Lewis Hamilton trying to score back-to-back victories this weekend for the first time in his Formula 1 career that's the CEO of the team Zack Brown who has taken them from the doldrums back to the front of the field first and third at the moment we're focusing on Alex alurn who's making his way to the all action parabolic corner and he's fighting it as he has to back off through there and that's blown a tidy lap easy tiger what a tricky Corner that has been so far today Max is obviously backed out of his lap he's cruising up towards the parabolica and I don't even know if he's won this up for another lap on the next go the way that he's going is not getting on the gas so has Max got an issue or is he just doing it a double cool he's drifting over the line isn't he as everyone else pushes on and we've got Yuki Coda going past him down to turn number one 51 minutes ago slightly curious stuff there's GP is uh race engineer it's Norris Hamilton pastri the player and gazley the top five no representative time set by Max EST stappen who did top the session earlier on ahead of Charla Clair Lon Norris third Carlo SE fourth top five was rounded out by valry botas which uh very much caught the eye of everyone across the pit there Ricardo goes up to fourth place he ran a soft tire like okay let's go track side now with David veki he's gone from the commentary box in fp1 to overlooking the racetrack in fbt and Alex look where we are because we are at the exit of ascari wow that one was tholl and probably sence is approaching Mano is low uh look at him this corner is quite important because you have in the entrance you have the DRS Zone here we can see SS approaching very slowly behind him there is a steak car I don't know probably botas and the Marshall is waving the wide flag because science was very very slow impressive the speed how the approach the exit of this corner and remember the last bit the left one is completely flood out from that moment aloso wow completely flood out okay we are incredibly lucky probably in the next few laps we can see signs here we have one of the V carb and then ler slowing down behind him ven one of the best plays here in Mona and probably of the entire Championship he's here asari fantastic speed see you later guys thank you David watching on this is estan oon heading to the first chicane Scrappy stuff as he goes over the grass over the tarmac that rejoins so there's no more plastic curbing down there like we used to have but there is a strip of gravel down there J and O Keen to avoid that so took to the grass and then took back to the uh to the runoff area Magnuson a different approach straight through the gravel and we're back on quick line that let's see what Franco kapino experienced lock up down for the first turn of the racetrack scrubbing off the Speed running the medium Tire only Ricardo's been on the soft so far he's fourth in the order big outside front lock up for col Pinto don't see too many of them but probably just finding the absolute limit of the breaks on a car that he's not particularly familiar with and with a very low downfalls configuration as well the new boss in town P bonotto so many decades with Ferrari all the way to the main job e so delays in progress there putting on his headphones to be part of the overall engineering chat Michael schumacker five time an Italian grand prix winner leis Hamilton the same number as well and then Nelson PK been talking about Argentina's Motor Racing Heritage Fano had three F's old teammate one of the greatest of all time Sterling Moss had three as well around this uh circuit so we go on board from looking at the Ferrari team on the pit wall we go on board now this is Charlotte Clair's crash helmet Livery for this week he's got the gyro cam which gives you such a sensation of speed and Char and Palmer talk us around this iconic lap yeah nice want to say on board with lir who just wounded up through parabolic he's so late on the brakes but still stops the car over steering slightly towards the first Apex finding a bit of traction on the exit and now we're up towards KAG Grande easy flat out is it feels narrower than it looks trust me this corner flashes past a a v and picks out a breaking point for the delar roia chicane the second chicane bumpy easy to lock breaks and go straight on but the Clair seems hooked up on this lap lesmo one camber nicely done from lir straight into lesmo 2 and it's a difficult exit that one we've seen so many run through the gravel it sort of pinches towards the exit it's so easy to go floaty and uh lose the car towards the exit of the corner it's a great middle sector for charl avoids the first part of the the chicane curve avoids the second part and nibbles the third so that's a very similar line to Lewis Hamilton earlier on through there for lir worked well for Hamilton who stays fourth in the times at the moment and it should have worked well there for lir as well into the final corner parabolica and he's so early to throttle soon as he comes off the brakes turns it in jumps back on the right pedal and does the shortest distance to the line to go to the top of the times ferrari2 Ferrari one two how great to enjoy it with that camera on board that lap cheers of talking us round Jolan excellent stuff there 1219 and the driver who's been on poll a couple of times around here fastest at the moment 45 minutes to go will buckon over the year Sergio Perez climbing in his car as you get down to us here in pit Lane no word from the team on exactly what the hold up was uh but the car very much up on the Jacks and being worked on uh the pieces being put back into place as we speak and final preparations being done on czecho car as he lowers himself in and I'm sure will be out on track soon um yeah that's it for now will be on track in a bit will just very quickly whilst we have you what were you mentioning in the pre-show about the possible change at parabolica because I can't remember a weekend with this many moments at the parabolica yeah so Luca was telling me he's been talking to the guys from the circuit that apparently when they were relaying the track obviously you have to you have to take up the track surface and then then relay it it's not just putting it on top of what existed before and in order to get back up to where the gravel trap is they've just kinked a little bit just a tiny little bit of gradient that just pushes up on the extremity of the parabolica which you'd think would kind of maybe pull them around a little bit but if it's just a slight incremental change could perhaps be something that's just unsettling the cars going in there and and causing some of those issues thank you very much will buckton very welcome we covered that in the pre-show but I just wanted to get that for anyone who wasn't with us earlier on wherever you've pressed play in the world well great to have your company it's the Italian Grand Prix at Monza it really really doesn't get much better than this it is a glorious place to go Motor Racing the atmosphere is wonderful it's even better when the Scarlet cars are at the front it's a flying lap now for Carlos s brilliant Pole Position here last year was able to get ahead of charlot Clair he came to this racetrack a year ago having not been on the podium all season long he's won a Grand Prix this year and got there as well not ideal through the fure came we saw that on the shuffling his hands at the wheel on the way into the first corner so RAR grip is at a premium through that first breaking Zone we had one Ferrari with gyro cam now with visor cam with the other and no changes on the uh steering wheel the caros through these first couple of Corners I tell you what SS is winding it up I wonder if we can get ourselves a lovely little two box and bring back in David veki because David he's heading to you is coming he coming Alex probably was not perfect at the break of the first Chen but now the approach of the ascari left hander look at him on the right all the car close to the curb and then flat out here come on SS come on I don't know the line the line here at the asari was just perfect I don't know the lap time because probably the first sector was not perfect but Ferrari at the moment they are flying wonderful to go back for the all all the different angles we've got Trackside we've got gyro cam we've got Visa Cam and we've got Carlos abandoning the lap he had a personal best in the middle sector but the first one meant there was no point in pushing on couldn't find a response to his teammates time but Ferrari looking good at the moment and we will see them adopt the soft tire sooner rather than later and what timing here we go Lando Norris Lewis Hamilton Oscar piastri all on the Red Wood Tire the grippiest the stickiest it's not a massive step forward in comparison to other circuits but we've got some serious contenders out there going to get a clue for qualifying Pace as Norris books his ticket to his own personal part of the racetrack leaving a gap as gazley and his teammate Oscar piastri moving to the parabolica got L stroll catching him he's going to wait lots of fans in here not just wearing red Lando noris has fans everywhere we go and he is now on a flying lap the driver who scored he his fourth career Pole Position had the Dutch Grand Prix less than a week ago DRS wide open huge speed we nose cam down to turn number one past the trees on the left hand side into the Rilo chicane that begins this lap trying to get on the power as early as possible go underneath the camera position there the crane that sits over the circuit can't think of many times that that happens anywhere else and you're already heading to the second chicane julan and the grip level just up you can tease the breaking slightly later you can get on the gas slightly earlier it feels nice when you're on a soft TI but there's not that many corners to make use of it around here he's already halfway around the lap is Lando Norris in two turn eight the uh second lesmo Hamilton is going quicker ahead you can see him on your left hand side coming up to the final corner of the parabolica in between them piastri is absolutely flying he's quicker than Norris in both the first and second sector now as well so piastri might the McLaren driver about to set the Benchmark as Norris gets slightly Twitchy in front of David veki down at the final part of escari David will be absolutely loving this it's wonderful to have so many different angles of these attacking laps Oscar P's lap time has been rapid and he hits the front of the field on a 120 uh8 oh and Norris Pips him look at that 7,000 of a second a 12851 McLaren one two on the soft tires ham son good enough for fourth but 3/10 of a second away Norris made that time up late on look at that sector three might have been an error for pastri 310 is a lot to lose yeah all in the final sector and no personal best for him there either so he had hooked up two Majestic sectors two TS up on Norris in the first part another in the middle but he couldn't quite keep it through that final section the McLaren looked nervous through ascari with Norris there's no one out here mate got no toe uh yeah copy that well that's another big talking point of Monza isn't it and Hilton's got no teammate cuz Russell is still in the garage as is Perez with no Laps on the board at all for George Russell 20 more minutes wasted for for him looks like czecho going to be heading out very shortly and Hamilton saying no tote you want one around here but uh yeah he's got no teammate at the moment to help let's go down stairs to will he may have a toe pretty soon because you see Lewis is coming in and about to go back out again I thank the guys for that but also George Russell about to be sent as well I'm pretty sure once Lewis has done his in and out George Russell sitting in the car the tire war is about to be taken off the team you can just see them maybe just there through the garage prepping George's car I can hear the engine getting fired up Russell is about to get out on track Stella job from the crew down here at Mercedes to fix that car and get him out with what is it 20 minutes of the session done done absolutely brilliant job from Mercedes both of them be out on track in a moment good news for George Russell's weekend he needs some time out there everyone else has got a lot of laps on the board in comparison and he finds himself able to join them now overtakes in 2024 is an interesting graphic you associate Kevin Magnuson with elbows out Ultimate Defense but apparently he's got the most overtakes of anyone this year elbows out works both ways doesn't it that is true it's a launch for or it's uh is the big defense and we saw more of that last week he seems to just be obsessed with trying to help niik hulkenberg his teammate out this year and in many ways do make so much sense they're teammates and he's trying to score points with the team but three times he has effectively sacrificed his own race to just go brutal defense and help Nico build up a few more seconds of buffer and that's exactly what happened in uh in zanol but I've not seen someone take themselves out of the picture compromise their own race as much as K so Corner ring is strong just to make losses are the lack of toe maybe a little bit to be found in turn one two hear someone laughing in the [Music] background someone wheezing in the background that was a mega laugh was that definitely a laugh maybe Ain sounded like a laugh a how I want to know what was said absolute Ripper being told down in the Mercedes garage got Magnuson first the bestest sector one sector two you're right Jolan it made sense when there was a possibility of staying with the team but he's he's still working of that Mega defense even though he knows he's not going to be with this team in the future amazing connection though with with this outfit many races with them and he's got the seventh fastest time just behind L stroll Magnus hoping to return to the points hasn't scored points around here since 2014 I I just think he loves it there sort of like the ultimate trolling isn't it going as slow as you can in front of your Rivals and you know you're not going to do anything you're just taking yourself out of the race more than he already was he started obviously from the pit Lane anyway but it's just stuffing other people over and doing it in a smart way you have to you you have to do it with without being passed eventually he was but losing time in the right places is a sort of tactical Tactical Defensive drive then you don't see too often I've got something uh moving around in my cockpit okay copy that uh where abouts in the cockpit is it I think it's a which is just um going to my seat so I think it's okay [Music] well still not ideal for George Russell then still trying to work out what's been left in the car swapping the seats over of course anelli in there earlier on switching to Russell driver on the taller side of things one of the stars of fb1 vry botas on that soft tire and his performance earlier on on the soft ey means that we're following him at the moment he's less than 2 and 1 half T of a second away from norres Sam Yeah Hello Alex um loose stuff in the cockpit at Mon it's not the first time this has happened Johnny Herbert retired from the 1998 Italian gr Prix here after a Sala mechanic left a spanner loose in the cockpit he touched the brakes the spanner shot forwards went under the brake pedal in the next corner he couldn't break and had a rather large accident as Ro not Hur at all but as her's still very much with us but yeah that's something the teams have really got to be close eye on because if you leave a little bit of a bit of finger trouble little bit of a a bolt Loos in the cockpit it can have consequences on a track this fast thank you s sounds like an excuse from Johnny to be honest sounds like one that would have been brought out of the back pocket how far fetched can I make it well one of the mechanics must have left a spanner in the cockit but shot forward as I hit the brakes man I miss my breaking point for the next one no he's been the driver sh at a couple of GR Prix uh this year very very popular character of The Paddock jny H winner of this Grand Prix and uh bu Buxton what have you got for us uh Mah Hainan was testing here one year uh and forgot the fact that there used to be a massive bump in the middle of the start finish straight and he was just poing along uh relaxing a little bit hit the bump his knee came up and hit the steering wheel release and he had the steering wheel in his hands hurling down the start finish St at Monza with no ability to turn the wheel he tried so desperately to turn the car he actually grabbed the steering column to turn it uh so yeah M had a had a big one here I think steering whe coming off in your hands is a pretty good one not bad at all not bad at all Lis Hamilton has gone to the front of the field final sector fastest of anyone so far he wanted drivers out on the track and he was able to find the fastest time Norris 3,000 of a second behind him signs only a tenth of a second away piastri only a tenth of a second away Charla Clair in fifth all of a 10th and a half off the pace Mighty close on the qualy Sims that are going on on track right now see what's happen to Max down towards the parabolica on a soft tire and he's had that similar moment that so many have had on the turn in fighting the car and just getting out of it trying to straighten up not end up pointing backwards and immediately jumps off the racing line and gets out of the way of those behind so a compromised an uncomplete soft tire lap then from Max who stays 13 Cho up to 14 just behind him Perez is back in the pits he's had his running ciled only three laps so far he's in 14th Kinto in 15th ahead of gazley okon Joe sonoda and George Russell making up for lost time his teammate is fastest at the moment how the grand free won five times yeah turn one now yeah yeah like see so H me okay CR 34° out there it's a hot day fairly still day and it's a bit of GB electrical equipment around the seat as well it can get quite toasty and L is obviously feeling that as he's circulating right now still on the soft tire which used to go top of the times on a second LLY up 3,000 quicker than Norris the times here are always so close because it's a relatively simple lap you can see the top five separated by a 10th and a half let's go for some gobbins chat now with Sam Collins yeah I mean electrical Gins J exact exactly right that gubbins can get quite hot but also the driver is essentially sitting on the fuel tank of the car and the battery unit of the hybrid system they all get hot they're inside the monocot they're inside the chassis but that that heat can conduct through the back of the chassis or the front of the chassis and go through to the driver's rear end so if you look at a Formula 1 driver's seat quite often you see them in the pit Lane I'm sure will buxon can go and find us [Music] one my seat feel very hot well atast George getting same reports from Lewis equal equipment for both Mercedes drivers but if Will goes down to the Mercedes garage maybe you can see some of the spare seats which they tend to leave in outside the garage and you actually see that many of the teams actually coat SE with heat reflective film and in some cases that's actually 24 karat gold film that spread across the driver's bottom which is a very expensive seat but very effective why sorry why the gold gold is actually a really good thermal barrier that's why there it's very reflective so it reflects the heat back so that's why you see it on a spaceship for example a NASA ship has all of those golden heat shields all over it someone has gone off of the exit in sector two and I'm being told it's Kevin Magnuson looks like the exit of the second lesmo it is it is Kevin Magnuson who's gone off the road red flag is out and he's reported he's all right but he's into the barrier and that's the biggest one that we've seen in this session I seen too many people go off there and find it all the way to the wall at that point sometimes they spit to the inside on the exit came out looks like he's sort of had the problem on the entry there and found the barriers radio did he's okay and out he clambers 29 minutes left on the clock which will keep ticking down and this is not working out at all well for George Russell who had only just hit the track and was just straight into a long run to build up some knowledge on what's going on let's see what Happ to km out of lesmo 1 into lesmo 2 just a loose car at the Apex turned it in it's the similar slide to the parabolica slides to be honest he just turns it in committed gets to the Apex and the re doesn't want it anymore into the barriers goes Kevin Magnuson driver who hasn't scored a top 10 finish here since 2014 when he was racing for mclara uh we've got the red flag flying at the moment clock continues to tick down let's go on board with the Danish driver round it goes session over day done what's situation I'm in the wall sorry I used to hate the radio message that's like can you continue and you're sitting in there plonked in the wall with three corners left on the car and you got to spell it out I'm in the wall please just watch the Telly it's me tell us what you've done JP tell us what you've done it's like you you've completely totaled the car and yeah your engineer like can you drive it back to the fit no no I cannot and that was km mag just then was that Julian on the on the phone ask was jul I love it I love it superb they cuz the engineers are just looking at squiggly lines they don't they don't watch this they don't watch the the Telly they're just watching the squiggly line did they just see the car come to a Hal could be a spin could be anything and if they just looked up and saw the reason for the red flag they would see it's their car all right let's turn to Alex brundle for a summary of what he's been hearing on the radio channels uh drivers in communication with the teams Alex over to you yeah I've been listening in it been really interesting so far this session both Mercedes drivers have been complaining about the ride quality and and could be a reason why we've seen Lewis Hamilton steering well clear of the curbs in the ascar chicane interestingly and though uh with that everybody else is copying them because it appears to be a better line through the ascar chicane so Mercedes driven wide away from the curbs everybody else finding that to be a better line and then copying them piastri slightly quicker than Norris through the first two sectors of the lap but had an absolutely monster moment uh through the exit of the ascar chicane which we've not seen yet we'll try and have a look at it after the session and spilled all of the time he was clear of his teammate at that stage of the lap so piastri on ideal actually slightly quicker than Norris at this stage Ferrari very happy with the laps that they've delivered um science as engineer incredibly impressed with his lap and that's about all they've got as they crossed the line that time so in terms of the the runners and Riders Hamilton I think probably uh with the most on the table made a big error down in turn one as well um trying to to scoop up that time so he's got more time on the table as has pastri the rest have delivered their potential at this stage and piastri still has the fastest first and second SE and he was 3/10 up on Norris who is 3,000 down on Hamilton right now so Hamilton did it on the second flying lap there's a bit more in there but pastry's lap was a belter until that point but it's I I watched it on on board a few moments ago and Hamilton actually related it over the radio it's a massive moment he has in the first two corners of the lap so there's a lot of time in quite a slow sector of the racetrack for Lewis Hamilton as well so time on the table for everyone barring I think Ferrari watch the lap back from SS and it's it's pretty on the ball and impressive so that's about all they've got at this stage despite those upgrades okay let go thank you Alex let's go to Sam Collins and the techpad yeah I just wanted to have a little chat Alex about a Ferrari powered car but not a Ferrari and it's the Saba now this is a car I feel that's slightly overperforming it expectations so far this weekend now you're looking at the rear wing of Shuan news car from earlier in the season I think this was Monaco or somewhere like that I just wanted to show you what a rear wing on a high downfall circuit looks like like note the two rear wing supports and just notice how steep the angle of this Wing is then I'll show you whatever have turned off in Monza with I don't know if that qualifies as a rear wing there's not very much of it um but it does still work it still has a wing element but it's very very thin it's very very small single element to reduce aerodynamic drag the lower element which is the one that's slightly more powerful is just not there at all and then when you have a look at the the section that would be the DRS flap that makes up pretty much all of the rest of the wing so when Salva open up that rear wing on the DRS there's just no rear downforce the car is very fast in straight lines however it does seem to be working around the lab again Jo Jo car valry bot's car is in the same specification the other little point of Interest I just wanted to show you all on the saber this was their mirror supports that they had for most of the Season they've introduced a lovely little detail for this weekend this just vertical element supporting the mirror in theory it's got nothing to do with mirrors supporting but it just holds up the mirror and look how they're separated at the end a very different design that I think a few other teams will want to keep an eye on thank you Sam on the left hand side of your screen you're looking at the reason for the red flag Kevin Magnuson second lesmo Corner Roundy went across the gravel into the barrier let's bring in will buckston thanks Alex it's um jolian mentioning that lesmo used to be named after the oak trees down there reminds me that if if you're lucky enough to come to Monza and head down to lesmo the Oaks that still exist down there that manag to survive the storm so many of them have nails rammed into the side I'm not talking about you know tiny little nails I'm talking like almost door stop wedg siiz Nails used in Timber Frame construction and they're in there to help fans climb up the trees they were put there early on in the 1920s by uh local fans who wanted to get the best vantage point of the track and it just reminded me of the the history of the place and for those who are new to the sport or maybe aren't so new to the sport and are thinking how on Earth and why on Earth is there a banked oval here at Monza uh that was built in 1955 so 33 years after the circuit was originally built and Incredibly for the races in which it was used the start finish strike actually was divided into two halves so you'd finish the lap out of the parabolica on the right hand side of the start finish trait hurdle down towards turn one and immediately be into that long run right hander on the banking on the oval which then took you all the way down the back into another long right-handed banking which would bring you out behind parabolica and onto the left hand side of the circuit that was a 10 km long track which was used four times in Formula One in 1955 the year it was constructed 1956 then later in 1960 and 61 although Hollywood would have you believe it was also used in 1966 for the filming of Grand Prix the oval itself was used twice just for a race on the oval and Incredibly it's when the best of the world of Formula 1 competed against the best in the world in USAC or what today we would call indie car they ran it the correct way if you're American not the way that the Europeans would have raced it on that 10 km track so counterclockwise those two races in 57 and 58 one by Jimmy Bryan and Jim wrathman do love a will buckton history hit very very enjoyable sir if you ever get a chance to to Monza and I would implore you to do so as we see Kevin Magnuson signing hats down there um you will not believe the banking when you see it and you won't believe that anyone ever raced on banking that steep we're going to zoom out of that shot you're going to see the devastation of the storm a couple of years ago that used to be thick with trees you can see how many were failed and then the various different circuits that we have but just top left you can see a hint of the Steep banking there that will was talking about you can't believe they ever had competitive racing on it wild stuff you can barely walk up it it's extreme and we we've come from zanor last week where the banking is a lot and uh yeah the the Monza old banking that goes over the circuit into aari corner it's Bonkers whole another level slightly nerdy fact the banking you see today is the 1955 banking there was actually an earlier banking that goes back to the 1920 the remains of which can just about be found out in the woods if you go fering around in the undergrowth there is still another banking around Monza I believe they still do use this banking for the Monza rally that takes place at the end of each year Valentino Rossy was somebody who's competed in that extensively I'd love to have a go on that banking I just to feel what it's like driving at that angle is this this turning into a production meeting now can can I have go on the banking okay that's can you CU you that's sorted for next year Palmer and a car on the banking someone done a car Formula One car going upside down in a tunnel was it lotus in the day or Red Bull was that a real stunt is that a thing or not have I made that up you haven't quite made it up somebody has put a wind tunnel model upside down in the wind tunnel to prove the the sort of common saying if you turn an F1 car upside down it would work upside down yeah aerodynamically speaking yes it would if you did it in real life the engine would probably blow up quite consider if you go upside can you if you go quick enough you just fall straight down no one's been quite mad enough to try I believe somebody is contemplating I have seen some rumors of that but the aerodynamically the car will stick to the ceiling but in terms of the mechanical gubbins is they wouldn't like it very much I don't want to do that I just want to do the bank find Palmer a car for the banking right there we are send email or off we go lovely right we're going to get a green light at the end of the pit Lane we've got our feature idea sorted for next year a track guide and then some we've got will buckon out on track with Pier gazley you can see that this weekend David veki tried to scare me behind the wheel of an ason Martin and I'll be honest succeeded at certain points you can also see that this weekend on F1 TV and we have George Russell desperate to get out of Friday with something to show for it and there's Oscar pastri who had a really good first two-thirds of the lap and then it all fell away so uh we're going to get some running with the sun ever lower in the sky beautiful dappled light here at Monza there's Andrea Stella team principal at McLaren and uh he has overseen a real return to form for the team there is the green light Perez Russell trying to make up for lost time track temperature still 47° it's qu to 6 local time Russell hustling the back of Perez leaving the pit Lan he has to get something out of this now 18 minutes now 17 and A2 minutes left Russell has done four flying Laps on high fuel that's the only thing he's done today and now he goes wheel to wheel around the outside of Perez a c Grande to take the lead on this outlab and have a nice clear track to try and get something out of it so he's got to have taken the fuel out now and it's important for jwes to get a read today because if he if he doesn't then there there's no more major changes he can make to this car and this is where Carlos science fell foul in uh in zanol last week he was unfortunate he had a a gearbox issue in fp2 it was the only dry session of the day and it meant that he couldn't dial in and get a read on the setup got into Saturday was on the back foot and was dumped out in Q2 and he actually had a really good race Pace to Carlos but was on the back foot because he couldn't qualify as well and uh and get that bank of data on a Saturday Russell has to get a clean run now and getting a feeling for the car Sam what have you got for us well you just saw a whole load of flow visualization die on the RO on the Halo of Danny Ricardo's car there and they've dumped it right in the center of the Halo which is right in front of the driver's face I can't quite see how all of that die which is used to see how the air is flowing over the car isn't going to end up all over his visor it's uh it looks like it's going straight into his eyes we'll keep an eye on that George Russell out onto the circuit and he's got his teammate directly ahead of him as Russell trying to log another lap drive he finds himself eighth in the world championship coming into this race Lewis Hamilton in sixth place 154 points Sergio Perez on 139 George Russell winner of the Austrian Grand Prix on 122 and then that's the the big eight drivers then you've just got a gargantuan Gap to Fernando alono who's stuck on 50 points so Russell will want to improve that position will not want to be bottom of the big group and that's where he finds himself at the moment right let's go from the commentary box to David veki who is standing by at parabolica corner and in a few moments time David George Russell will make his way out of aari and head to you yeah we're here in the middle of parabolica probably close to the Apex of that corner Russell is approaching is with the medium tirus let me see him it's going to be considering that is on the race SP the speed is not so bad behind him Norris and hon and parrots parrots that probably find a bit of traffic to Hamilton and I would like to let you to show you guys the speed here is incredible and so it's not so easy to follow the Formula One car only also with our view look there just in the middle of parabolica you can see the line of the rubber and then the barrier that missed the sponsor Co Antonelli crashed there this morning very unlucky for all the Italian fans that they are around here at my place speed of Max ven just at the entrance of parabolica wonderful place back to you Alex thank you d right on the inside of parabolica and a great view of the speed sometimes it can seem a long corner from this angle you get an idea with daviday down there jolian how quick The Sweep is around that last part of the lap yeah just blasting past so quickly it's a it's a buzz to drive they opened up the the the runoff tarmacked it for a few years and now the gravel is back and quite clearly so was the Jeopardy there as well as we saw earlier on pointo comes through and gets another lap on the but no improvement for him on a soft tire still that he's out there on and Russell it looks like is still out there on high field as D said so uh George just waiting fting his time to try and put on a soft tire build up as much info as he can on the high field and then he's got a set of s still to go on we just saw the speed trap figures on the screen for Williams versus RB and the Williams cars do look pretty quick at 353 kph however this is a bit of a warning about speed trap numbers the speed trap is a fixed Point around the circuit however the way the cars make their speed is depending on the engine mode the power unit mode as the car crosses the speed tra it might not actually be accelerating anymore it might be decelerating slightly because of the hybrid system recovering energy and other cars may still be accelerating so the speed track rarely shows you the top speed of these cars around this track which is probably closer to 360 kph when we get into race conditions perhaps even higher we're going to be taking a look little bit of a more in-depth look at that on Tech talk later this evening so keep an eye out for that one keeping an eye out for whether Daniel Ricardo has got a face full of paint uh after what we saw him leave the pit Lane he's making his way through driver trying to secure his future in Formula 1 the winner of the Italian Grand Prix a couple of years ago incredible drama of that race was really something special chased all the way home by Lando Norris back in 2021 Ken's first Victory on that day since 2012 and a onew as well it's his only Podium finish around this circuit and he will be happy with that seventh fastest time in the qualifying simulations hulkenberg once again good one laap pace having a better weekend than we saw uh through the practice sessions today when he did one week ago in zone does Daniel Ricardo have a face full of paint the answer is probably yes I can only see the top of his head on the onboard camera at the moment but it's absolutely covered in that flow visualization gu but the great thing for him is he's got tear offs so you get a visor full of paint and the flow viz paint basically dries in about 30 seconds or 60 seconds of hitting the track anyway so it makes a splash the engineers can get some lovly highres photos of it when it comes back in and see the air flow over and uh and Daniel can keep look pristine pristine the uh the visor there of Daniel glistening in the late afternoon sunshine into the the final 11 minutes we still are expecting Kimmy antelli to be confirmed as the second Mercedes driver for next year there's a seat to be resolved at Sala there's a seat to be resolved at RB or VAB or what you take your pck take your fancy for what we're referring to the team from fenza as uh but that needs to be resolved and intriguing Jolan that they were unwilling to release Liam Lawson for even nine grand prix at the end of the season yeah definitely the word is that red bull want to have him as a reserve just in case they uh they need to call him up or they choose to call him up in the last nine races we know the Constructor fight is very much on and heading towards McLaren at the rate that they're they're progressing and Red Bull are falling away right now and Red Bull are not having the EAS day today with theaf having a big moment and staying down in 13 H I don't know about the the Williams I I think if Williams wanted to put the most talented driver in that seat though they I don't think they would have gone for Kinto I actually think he's done an okay job today he's a couple of tenths away from Alban I think that's a very respectable job and we've seen how if you push too hard as a rookie you know they can go the other way and Antonelli has made made Mercedes life just a bit more Awkward than than it was meant to be this weekend with the uh with with the crash earlier on where do you see vard heading still I think lawon now has to be a shoe in for that drive doesn't he it's a really weird one because Daniel Ricardo one moment you'll see a story linking him to the Red Bull seat the next you see a story saying he's on the brink of retirement it's a well it's a bizarre one like are you going to get access to the champion constructor's car or are you going to find yourself out of the sport entirely it's a it's a very weird situation you have to feel that Liam Lawson has not pursued other options because he believes he's going to be in that in that setup in some form in in 2025 there was always an assumption wasn't there when he was not on the grid for this year that he would definitely be on the grid for 2025 but Formula 1 contracts J I mean that they're not always followed no no I was until you've got into a seat and you're doing the beers then you just don't want to rest on your laurels and that's why you know again back to colapinto he is at least whether he's the the best decision or the short-term decision or he's there because he's bringing some Argentine sponsors to the team he is at least in the car and he can show what he can do this year even if not the longer run and Lawson I would assume that he's going to be in next year and I it sort of makes sense for uh for Ricardo to either be up or out at his age remember this all comes back to Sergio Perez as well and if you're not going to put Ricardo in the main seat you might as well give someone younger and a potential future star a chance alongside coda in many ways so it's sort of perverse but it kind of makes sense that if you're not going to back him right now to do a better job than Sergio Perez who's underperforming and struggling in that other car then what are you doing with with Danny Rick it's a very odd one it's a very odd one of course McLaren won this Grand Prix with Daniel Ricardo in 2021 McLaren took the risk put a untried Oscar piastri into the seat and 35 races later they found themselves with a grand prix winner so maybe Red Bull will look to the Future and uh and put Lawson in there he impressed a lot of people with his races this time last year he was taking part in this Grand Prix after Daniel Ricardo broke his hand I still want to see how AAR in F2 championship leader Red Bull young driver in the roster I want to see Formula 2 Champions get the call up yeah totally with you on that I I really this week it's wonderful it's wonderful to see drivers get being given the chance I really enjoyed it really enjoyed fp1 and different names different stories different temperaments uh different different narratives and and you know you get to talk about a Formula 2 Sprint race where colapinto roared around the outside great move to win the race in emila one of the things that stuck in I mean James V has been talking about that in his his press this week but then you do feel for phelip pagovich Champion here in 2022 foro porcher who was told to go and win the title took a conservative approach to winning the title delivered what they asked for and there was no seat as the reward which I think he believed he was going to get and then also fr VY was very quick as well would have been a candidate to be on the grid worthy of of getting there timing it's luck and timing isn't it sometimes with a driver Market Isaac haar doing all he can you can watch all the F2 races for the rest of the season it's going to go and be really exciting stuff he's on he's got a good opportunity this weekend and I sense that he's he's calming down a little bit on the radio as well he's turning a page is one thing that we we talked about talked about it earlier in the F2 com with Alex R the temperament required the Cool Head required e erratic but now he's he's getting his head down and being a much more mature driver yeah Yuki making the trip over to to Europe and had one year in a championship then promoted one year in a championship then promoted gets to gets the Formula One slightly Rough Around the Edges but he's proven this season that the cor speed is taking a step forward and as you say the maturity has been there as as well and we're not hearing the Yuki of old on the radio uh but it is absolutely part of the game the psychological side of Formula 1 you've got to believe that you belong here another lock up for Max staffen it's not been the easiest day for him at the second chican but also youve got to utilize an enormous team of people and that's a real skill in looking at Christian hoer on the pit wall CEO and team principal he's got his cars down in 13th and 14th not representative of the actual Pace but not what they wanted to see someone a lock up there in the back of sh a minor regulation that a lot of people probably don't know about driver changes just to F feed into what Jolan was saying about other drivers that we'd like to see on the grid this year Ferrari and Williams are only allowed to use one more driver which isn't a great problem with nine races to go because you're only allowed to use a maximum of four drivers per season and after that you have to revert to a previously used driver so the last team to run sort of a CS that was the VC carb team under a previous name used up all four slots and had they lost a driver for any reason they would have had to rehire Nick D or one of the other drivers they' used that year so with Oliver bman having the Ferrari and now colatino in the Williams both of those teams can use one more driver and then they have to use somebody else they've previously used it happened in 2017 didn't it with uh was it sign svat then gazley came in for a race then Brendan Harley came in for a race and then they they signed Nick my driver Rena and then they they had to go back toat for for a oneoff cuz Harley had a clash or something or gazley was seeing out his super formula season wasn't he so they tail between their legs went back to uh to kavat who they just booted out a couple of races before it's very rare that that's an issue and it won't be this year driver change is generally not a uh a merrya round mid seon Sergio Perez over the gravel at turn number one and he's big lock up for him there at the first chicane and his teammate could be in trouble for a similar moment I wonder if Perez is going to get a little bit of a ticking off from the FIA from this the FIA have said when a driver goes off at any of these chicanes they should use the Escape road you can see it off to the left there behind forz and let's see what the alono does in the same situation so yeah if you can't make the corner what you should do is go on to the right and you can see that lane rejoining now coming on here Lewis Hamilton's been noted for it Max ven's been noted for it so the fa are quite Keen to tell drivers to follow the instructions from the race director and it's clear some of them are not doing so so I I think we're going to see some slapped wrists this evening let's like it's quite a uh cutable chicane doesn't it those first two now they've taken away some of the the higher Curves in between this is driver pal eyeing up lap one getting your eye in I think we're going to see cars everywhere at the first part of this one well it's always narrow that that start at the uh at the first corner it's a long narrow run to the first breaking Zone it bunches up like no one's business when you at the back of the field you have to almost idle to to all filter through that but it is the sort of thing where you you you ey it up at the start of the race you know especially if you're on the outside and you get forced a bit wide you can just bolt straight through that runoff there's no physical penalty for going through it which does encourage drivers to um to have a chance and see where you come back in and you can at least guarantee that you don't lose places by doing that if you gain places then the steers will have a look at it and you can get a penalty but also sometimes you just be told to give them back in the next couple of laps and sort of a safer way to get through the first corner I prefer physical deterrent is just the best way to to police it we've seen many drivers now just skip through not only this chicane but the next chicane as well it' be intrigued to see uh whether there are changes made for next year because I do think we're going to get a flurry of cars we'll look at that in the pre-ra show but I do think we're going to get a flurry of cars over the road at turn one because everyone's looking for an advantage as the checker flag is flying lonar is going to finish this session in second place qualifying simulation times on the left hand side of your screen a first Friday in one complete for Franco colapinto who's attacking on at the very end and he has a Friday in the books not too far away from his teammate's effort it's revised Williams they have high hopes for this weekend it's go on board with ls Hamilton Roger chicane at least that was the attempt and you're meant to rejoin around the houses on the right hand side there uh but he's just gone over the road and been pinged by race control for staffen Hamilton Alonzo and Joe gu all pinged for failing to follow the the Escape road instructions like we had in zanol like we've got here like we'll have at other parts of the calendar for the rest of the year comparison there that's not a fair comparison because faafan had an issue on his lap but it's Hamilton out front and he is going to top the page so vapen earlier on V uh Hamilton in fp2 but Ferrari looked quick McLaren looked good looks wide open once again it does Mercedes will be happy with the uh the pace of Hamilton Russell got a lap time on the board and jumped to sixth as well so did get a feel for the soft tires 3/10 away from uh from leou Hamilton three and a half T but at least something out there for for George after a tricky day on the other side of the carriage it looks very open doesn't it Ferrari both cars up there in the top five Red Bull on the face of it quite well down but we know that there was a big mistake and no flying lap on the softs for for Max who was quick earlier on see is so hot yeah copy that we'll have a good look around it this evening Le Hamilton has not been happy with the temperature of his seat all day long not a sentence you ever ever want to hear especially on a day where it's been so warm 34° air temperature but he's top of the pile and he wouldn't be surprised given that he won had a classic in Belgium he won a classic at Silverstone Hamilton seeming to come alive at the old school venues this year the two venues two races on the calendar every single year of Formula 1 the British Grand Prix and the Italian Grand Prix only once have we had the Italian Grand Prix anywhere other than this place 1980 when they re were refurbishing and it went TM for that year instead PL wheel spin for Kinto getting a practice started at the end of his first full day of uh of running in Formula 1 just try it's difficult it's one of those other things that you got to get your head around so many aspects and he's not had much time to prep for this and uh yeah only announced 5 days ago probably less than that 4 days ago that he was in the car thanks foring the car between the sessions guys my seat is still exceptionally hot whatever reason yeah understood good thing for Mercedes it's a short race on Sunday this one flies by because the average speed is so high they rattle through the laps quick car but uh toasty drivers George Russell thanking the team and then immediately asking for oh just one other fix I know I know you've done a lot of work on the car just just one final fit the seat is roasting as well so sou even Mercedes to look at practice start for George Russell who in the end was able to get out there and log the sixth fastest time and in the end was able to get 20 laps on the board so useful for him he completes his practice start the sun ever lower in the sky past the timing Tower he goes there you go there's the we were talking about earlier Sports field as well fan Zone in the middle and here's your result after a second hour of practice with lwis Hamilton fastest ahead of Lando Norris he was fastest by 3,000 of a second caros SS P3 ahead of Oscar pastri in fourth and it was the player ahead of Russell who had a shorten session after Mercedes were repairing the car after Antonelli's crash earlier on a hulkenberg Ricardo Alonzo and stroll round out the top 10 once again those two Aston Martin seem to be glued together alono the lead run in ninth boutry botas in 11th then Kevin Magnuson ahead of Alex Alan Max aaen issue for him on his lap means that he's only 14th Sergio Perez in 15th then sonoda and the debut boy Franco colapinto in 17th not too far away from Alvin's effort he'll be pleased with that gazley ahead of okon Joe guu rounding out the [Music] field well thanks to everyone in in the commentary box today we've brought you plenty of voices and plenty of action thanks very much for your company we'll see you tomorrow when F1 returns now we'll send it to the padic thank you very much Alex Jake to jolian Palmer to Sam Collins to all in the commentary box as well we're down here in the paddock will fresh out the pit Lane David fish from track side as well I don't think either of us are freshed you're the only one little step back no it has been very warm here but the sun has merly come over the the padic now and we are in the shade leis Hamilton then quickest after fb2 and on a track and on a weekend in which we said Mercedes are going to struggle they struggle with Tire temperatures but besides well we didn't we D the team themselves said David said DAV is on look at spa look at spa they're going to be quick should have listened to David it is only Friday there is fb3 in qualifying to come and indeed a very e for
