The Smiths came to mean so much more to me than your average pot group and I wasn't alone they were it they were as big and as important as the jam and the sex pistols and The [Music] Beetles I first seen them on top of the pops they were just so odd Johnny M looked like this classic rock star he had a big red semi- acoustic guitar and a turtl NE and I was like Wow and he had a the Brian Jones air do yeah Morris he just looked like something that had never been seen before you know with an irade and flowers hanging out of his back pocket they just kind of exploded didn't [Applause] they my love of most things musical is strictly for the music the [ __ ] going on around it that's irrelevant to me morisy was going on about poetry and vegetarianism and you know Johnny was going on about the Rolling Stones and T-Rex and the stoes and I was like [Music] yeah where does Johnny Mars guitar playing rank for you I've seen him in the studio do things that are so simple on a guitar yet so difficult at the same time that does your eding do you know what I mean how hard is it to to play like Johnny Mar possibly can't you know if you're making a record and the producer saying try try some of that Johnny M stuff you better get on the phone and get him because you can't you can't do it that's not him now by the way he invented the St which I'd never heard before it's a true [Music] original halfway through there's you know 6,000 people singing it you think you're thinking essentially this is a song about [Music] death like all the great bands it's not something that you can sum up in one Nifty sentence and say it's because of that it's impossible so people like you spend 30 years trying and they probably take another 30 years we still come back to the same thing they were just [ __ ] great sing me I don't want toake up on my own anymore The Smiths I've seen Le Zeppelin The Jam no I'm not sure that would be a good thing uh but the Smiths when you go and see moresi right which I have done regularly and he plays those songs and they're great but you always think wouldn't it be great if Jonny was playing the guitar because no one plays them quite like Johnny and when I went to see Johnny recently at brickton Academy singing those songs and it was great and the crowd carrying it along and you're thinking wow that's great but imagine both of them on stage it would be because I was such a huge fan of the Smiths and still am it would be so amazing but I'm not sure it would ever happen I'm not sure either of them are that interested this is a shame because it would be great but um let's look to the Future really and youd have to take time off from all this but you got three I mean three or four albums sitting on the B burner I know but I'm just inherently lazy is what I am I'm just like I'm can't be bothered with this like hacking away at a iPad you know I was born in 1967 you know but Morris's B have you read Morris's book I haven't read it but people R about that it's brilliant yeah is the way of his words there's a great line in it where one of his record company bosses had refused to put this album some album they were making out and the Smiths insisted that it come out and they had uh so went to number one and they had a party the Reco company and the Reco company boss was at this party and morisy says and and there in the corner he he was skullking in the corner looking like an un an untouched sandwich I Buffet you see you'd love it I think you'd absolutely love it so what have you got any Ambitions like so the next video is by some homeboys of mine from Manchester called The Smiths uh I can't say enough about this group I was a fan from day one still a fan to this day Johnny is one of my closest friends morisy is a i no Mor he's a dude one of the funniest men I've ever met in my entire life um this song is outrageous uh when it first was played on British radio in 85 or maybe 86 you know to hear hang the DJ chanted uh all the way in the outro was was was both funny and inspiring and uh this is the legendary Smiths okay I had a night out with Morris he w in La it was one of the funniest nights I've ever had with anyone was it was it he'd been uh he'd been he' canceled a load of gigs uh cuz he had pneumonia and uh I was in LA and no people know him and he said oh go out for a drink and he texted me saying bring your credit card and uh he's an old with them I get to this bar and he sat there and I was like I man he's going hello and I was like uh I thought you had C G from pneumonia and he said yet here I am and uh he he was so f i me I was crying laughing at some of the stuff he was he was telling me this story and he was OB I didn't get that he was winding me up for ages he was saying I played drums once in a rice krispies commercial he's just lying yeah yeah and I was like really and he said yes yes yes but I gave up the drums but and I said why is that and he said I wouldn't wear the leather thinking can't and I remember saying to remember and I met him one one night in Le clares one night and he was in the bar and I was my Ms had never met him and I said oh can I BR my Miss into me and he said well I don't know is she nice I said yes all right and he said fantastic do you know I've I've been at a gig he cancelled um with a sore throat and he came out to tell us he couldn't carry on with the gig and he was it was it's the first tour they ever did it was at Leicester University or somewhere or Le maybe leester de offord and he came out and he was in tears sort of doing it no but I spoke to someone who worked there and they said no they saw him laughing around the back it was fine really he said I can't but I will repay and he he said no he around the he it was a he was used to work at the he was must been deont for all he said he looked perfectly fine he was laughing he played at the padium recently which I missed the gig but everyone said was absolutely amazing so yeah I'm hly they saying he put both his hands on the table and he just went and growled and the table shook the Smiths to me were everything when I was growing up and uh actually Johnny was one of the first people ever to recognize Oasis in uh before before anybody had heard of us he had uh he got old of one of our demo cassettes and called me at home one after one afternoon I was like and we become obviously really close friends I've seen him on Sunday at up at City actually he's just a wizard he's as passionate about music now as he ever was and and as morisy I was you know I don't know I just I adore that man so much he just truly couldn't care less about anything and I went I had a night out about must be good five six years ago now in LA with him and Russell Brand uh when Russell was living in LA and I actually had to go to toilet at one point cuz I was my stomach was hurting so much because he was crying and it was on the day of Kate and Williams wedding right and uh so we sat in this bar and this American woman comes over and says to Mory I overheard you guys accent you must be British I'd just like to come over and congratulate you on the wedding of Tomorrow congratulate congratulate you on the wedding of wills and Kate I'm honestly did say he put both his hands on the table and he just went and growled and the table shook I was like of all the people in the world to come and thank for a royal wedding you Pi the most anti- Royal person you could ever come across very funny moment do you ever see Morris he's quite recluse isn't he like in terms of you never see him in I don't I I don't know him that well I I I mean i' I've met him obviously festivals and all that I I kind of I know him more through Russell when Russell when Russ lived in La they were kind of quite close so um most rock stars are recluses you I think you find you there's only a few of us who get out and still do our own shopping but um he's a dude I do love [Music] him cuz you mentioned we we mentioned him earlier on but um there's a there is a story Russell Brown Los Angeles yeah no Galler yeah um just give us a bit of that first of all I mean first of all you you're with well I'm on I'm on holiday well I'm on holiday with uh my mes and the kids well you know I'm glad you told me you're on holiday cuz I'll tell you one thing marsy never found out you're on holiday he doesn't give two Hoots what you're doing he only cares about himself so Russell is living out there at the time as his morisy and um so I called Russell's a friend of mine so I called him and he was saying oh I tell him morisy you're going to be in town he wants to go out for a drink and that's was great and um so we got on to this English bar you know and there he is and uh he uh he just canceled a load of gigs cuz he had pneumonia or something and I was like uh now I've met him before and um I was like I thought you were you know I thought you were on death store you cancel the gigs and he's like yet here I yet here I am yet here I am it's so Mory those five words so anyway we get to we get to getting stuck into boozing me and him and he was with a couple of guys and um he pulls out this CD which he tells somebody to it's not a CD of his music it's a CD of like a compilation CD cuz the music's so the music's Dreadful in this bar you know and he can't and it's all this stuff from the 70s jab brith and Brian proo and new yor dolls and all this and he's he's kind of going you know this song and I'm like no he's going really it got to number 47 in 1973 and uh and I thought i' never heard of it but he played me this track one night called uh that night called pinball by Brian prro that I used as an inspiration for the for the track I chasing yesterday called Riverman um but he gets a lot of flack morrisy because he's a he's he's A's he's tricky but I I adore him oh yeah I adore him I think he's I think he's one of the greats and he's one of those people who will I he will make me laugh until I cry laughing he's and and my jaw and stomach will be hurting the next day but I love him dearly and of course Russell Brown wasn't drinking Russell Brown was trying to hold on for dear life cuz morisy was really being very very mean to him which was very funny yeah okay yeah I've heard the stories all right yeah okay so let's take a look at P dossier of Morris's comments over the years and accused him of racism he never responded they've kept on at that thing like well if he doesn't defend himself then he must be why why [ __ ] should he you know why should he we all know for the fact he's not because if he was the [ __ ] news of the world have uncovered it first forget the [ __ ] Anem not everybody is absolutely stupid why on Earth would I last time I was in LA I was with Russell and he said come on let's go and see morisy one of the best nights out I've ever had so funny we went to this bar he brought his own CD of not of his own music of other music to play and he gets the CD taken off take this rubbish off put this on and we chatting away about stuff and all this you know named this tune and I was like I've never heard it and uh it was Brian prro so the next day I kind of got was a bit we got smashed hammered the next day I got I asked Russell to email him and ask him what that tune was and so it was Brian PR so I downloaded it and the night before we left to do the song we're going to do it the next day I played this Brian P not on for any other reason just to play it so these two guys in the studio I said you heard this song as they played it we were all like going roing know it's amazing and then a light came on and thought hang on a minute that song would work in that style so I went home and I rewrote it hey Presto the magic happened so thanks morisy you're not getting any [ __ ] credit for it or royalties whatsoever but thanks anyway let's take morisy first you can't really sum that Geer up really in a in in a Nifty sentence because everything about him is is contrary he's without a doubt the most literate man ever to write music I used to piss myself laughing out loud on a bus going into town to BU the enemy when he was on cover there an interview laugh out loud [ __ ] sides splitting his lyrics are incredible he's one of the best as for Johnny mAh there's nothing he cannot do on a guitar I've been in the studio with him he's played on Oasis tracks and stuff the man's a [ __ ] wizard but you can't you cannot be influenced by Johnny M because he's unique because you can't play what he plays even he's not as good as he is [ __ ] me if anybody knows how to play guitar it's him he's a great great great guitarist he's a great guy he's a [ __ ] man city fan for [ __ ] sake always always wore impeccable shoes and had a great haircut always he's quite euphoric up kind of guy uh which probably counteracted Morris's dness but they obviously complimented each other to such an extent that they made [ __ ] H you know the most unique music of their generation probably [ __ ] any generation
