Young on one hop bom to the plate to throw into third and the Phillies have three hits in a row and four in the inning they played two big runs the runners go the 3-2 pitch swinging a softline drive Abrams can't get to it it's down for a base hit Wilson will score Sosa over to Third and it's 5 to one Philadelphia and the Nationals cannot stem the tide and welcome to Nat chat for Sunday August 18th 2024 I'm Al GDI host of the AL GDI podcast Mark zerman is off for this installment of the podcast but I'm joined by the man who runs the podcast Tim chers and uh unfortunately the streak is over the N streak of winning seven consecutive Saturday games now is done Saturday evening a 5-1 loss at the National League East leading Philadelphia Phillies in game three of a four game series this was a game in which the Philly starting pitcher Christopher Sanchez tossed a two-hitter he allowed one run in nine innings on 99 pitches he threw 71 strikes versus just 28 balls as yes the Nets managed a mere one run and a mere two hits for the game the game lasted for Just 2 hours and 6 minutes the NS for this regular season now 55 and 69 a season worst 14 games below 500 as the Nets have lost each of the first three games of this 4 game series at the Phillies a thank you to all of you who have given this podcast a five-star rating and who have written nice reviews of the podcast you want Apple podcast and on Spotify can rate the podcast festar ratings are very much appreciated and you want Apple podcast could write a review saying that you like the podcast the review does not have to be long can be just a sentence or two but the ratings and the reviews help us out a lot thank you very much for doing them so Tim it was a little more than three months ago that the Nats were above 500 uh we're 19 and 18 and we had visions of a breakout season dancing in our heads the Nats since being 19 and 18 have gone just 36 and 51 My Hope for this season and I said this months ago is that the 2024 gats could be like the 2022 Orioles not necessarily a playoff team but a team that has a really encouraging season that strongly suggests that the rebuild is working look the Nats rebuild may be working but this season is not going as the Orioles 2022 season when and this ongoing series at the Phillies is providing a pretty harsh reminder of where exactly the Nats are at they're obviously right now not in a good place as it relates to 2024 but you mentioned 36 and 51 since they were briefly above 500 the pitching since then got worse and the hitting with the exception of James Wood really hasn't gotten better evidenced by a game like tonight they got just two hits and it wasn't even that noteworthy cuz we're kind of used to that so where I'm going with this is I I guess I'm a bit more pragmatic about it and I don't take a Sky's following approach to it and I also know that they trade away Hunter Harvey and Dylan floro parts of their a bullpen And Trades that I loved I mean absolutely loved each of them and so yeah August and September of 2024 are going to take a hit and we've had a lot of medicine to swallow as Nats fans the past few years but these final six weeks are going to be more of that unfortunately and I think you hit on a very key point there is the micro of this season there is the macro of the rebuild this season may not be going as Nats fans want the season to go but that doesn't mean that the bigger picture isn't going the way that you want it to be going I do think that this Nat's rebuild May well be working I still don't think we can say with certainty that it is but I think there are more reasons to think that the rebuild is working than there are reasons to think that the rebuild is not working what you wanted though with this season was for it to be a bust out season a season that basically grabs you by the shirt collar and says yeah this is working look at what's happening with this team and we're not getting that at least not yet I mean you know there's still a decent portion of the season to go maybe the natz cats fire but things are not trending in a positive direction right now and you know specific to this series the Phillies are one of the big boys and if the Nats are going to be good again they're going to have to have at least some success against the likes of Philadelphia and Atlanta and the Mets and this series just feels like big brother beating on little brother I mean that's what the series has felt like so far this game on Saturday evening was was no contest the Nats offense in this game did nothing against the guy in Christopher Sanchez who is not a bad pitcher but he's not some dominant pitcher you know I mean he he's he's at best the Phillies number three pitcher with Aaron Nolan Zack Wheeler being ahead of Sanchez in the Phillies pitching hierarchy and this game just nothing happening for the NS offensively like I said two hits the entire game you had a solo Homer by Alex G yet had a leadoff first pitch single by Andre chaparo and that was it and it wasn't just two hits no walks for the Nets in this game the Nats in this game did not register a single at bad with a runner in scoring position and I mentioned Sanchez's pitch count 99 pitches over nine innings McKenzie Gore threw 92 pitches over 5 and 2/3 Innings and we'll get to Gore's outing in a bit but just a lifeless offensive performance and just disappointing that's all and and again it does it mean that the bigger picture is not going well or at least is not going to ultimately prove to be successful but it's tough right now if you're an ANS fan it's tough right now the team is not winning the second half of the season the post Allstar break portion of the season is not going well and uh this series which was kind of a measuring stick series the Nets are not Measuring Up not at all and I think we're all anticipating probably them getting swept after Sunday in a in a Four game series this is where things are trending and you do talk about how things are rough and there is a lot left to the season we have a quarter of the Season left to go which is why and you and Mark have been talking about this and sort of foreshadowing this the fan base could use a bone here you know the fan base has been sitting through some terrible baseball for a few years Dylan Cruz needs to get called up whenever it's time CBA wise PPI wise whatever alphabet soup acronym you want to throw in there that lawyers love fine but they need to call them up because there's going to need to be a morale boost here in September yes CBA Pi there are many other acronyms we could throw out of people right now but we are past the point anyway so I think Dylan Cruz time is coming but you know even if slash when Cruz gets promoted he's not going to fix everything just like James Wood has not fixed everything you know it's exciting when these guys get called up I think Cruz should be called up but I think we have to understand would Cruz you know it's one or two guys they can only do so much like there are bigger items with this team specific to this season to where the season just is not going so well right swing a Fly ball right field well hit sending casano is back to the warning track near the wall looking up and there it goes Alex Co hits an opposite field home run to right field the Nationals first hit gives them their first lead of the series The Nationals won the Phillies nothing Homer number two this season for Alex call two hits for the Nats in this game one was a home run that was good Alex Co he in this game as an ad starting ride Fielder and number one batter one for four with a solo Homer also made a very impressive defensive play The Homer coming Internationals one run fourth a leadoff opposite field home run to right field to tie the game at one and the defensive play by call bottom of the first a terrific catch on a line out by xnat Trey Turner cor delivers swinging a line drive right center field on the run is cold he Dives and he makes a spectacular backhanded catch so some good stuff from Alex call and then like I said the only other hit by a Nationals player in this game Andre chaparo he for this game was the N starting DH and number five batter one for three with a single top of the eighth a leadoff first pitch single to left field and thus concludes your roll call of Nationals hits in this 5-1 loss at the Phillies on Saturday evening I mentioned CJ Abrams on the last installment of the show Abrams another rough game on Saturday evening he is an at starting Short Stop and number two batter went 0 for four and so what has become a rough August for Abrams continues he's had a few good games but beyond like one or two games maybe three games this month lot of ofers for Abrams and Abrams now over his last four games is a combined 0 for 14 with one walk Abrams for this month of August now has the following slash line a batting average of 163 and on base percentage of 236 and a slugging percentage of 327 Mark and I talked about this actually off the air the other evening sometimes I wish our off a conversations uh could be recorded and put into like a bonus portion of the podcast but you know the gats to me for this rebuild to work need Abrams to be not just good but great they need Abrams to be like what Bobby Whit Jr is for Kansas City or to go back to the Orioles analogy what gunar Henderson is for the Orioles and that's a high bar I get that asking Abrams to be an elite shortstop but he has that kind of of ability and it's not that he's had some awful season but as we've discussed it's been a very inconsistent season and really the season has been built on two months he had a great month of April he had a great month of June and Beyond those two months he just hasn't done much this season offensively and unfortunately he's having another bad month right now in this month of August tough times right now for Nat's fans Josiah gray is going to probably miss two years K cavali cannot get back on the mound can't even get to Triple A at the moment Mackenzie Gore has gone backwards Jake Irvin's not pitching as well as he was earlier Mitchell Parker is up and down where I'm going with this is CJ Abrams too like come on CJ all right like now Nat's fans got to worry about you as well cuz yeah he was an Allstar and he was great in April and June but there have been a lot of days where he has not been a franchise shortstop and if there is any chance of winning in the near future come next season he's going to have to be a very big part of it I mean when you think about potential franchise player for the Nats to emerge from this rebuild right you think about James Wood you think about Dylan Cruz but you also think about CJ Abrams and I don't know if all three are going to prove to be franchise guys but all three could prove to be franchise guys and so the guy like Abrams him being good is good but what you really want is more than that and again it's a high bar but he's capable of reaching that bar we wouldn't be having this conversation if he wasn't capable of reaching that bar and uh we've seen him be off too much this season but he's a young player still learning of course and uh like we keep saying there is still plenty of time in this season uh for a Godlike Abrams to get rided so McKenzie Gore he needed a good outing on Saturday evening in the worst of ways and for a while he was having a good outing the shame of this 5-1 loss at the Phillies beyond the NS bad offensive performance is that what was looking like a very encouraging start for McKenzie Gore ended up unraveling Gore ultimately was not good for a ninth time in 10 starts his final line five runs in five and 2/3 Innings but he allowed one run in five innings then came a 4-run six for the Phillies Gore in that inning was charged with all four of the runs he in the inning gave up five hits recorded just two outs two of the hits were singles that each had an exit velocity of at least 101 mph per stat cat so you can't necessarily say that Gore you know got babed in that inning or something like that he gave up some hard contact he gave up a bunch of hits gor for the game gave up nine hits which were two doubles and seven singles he issued two walks he did record six strikeouts so he was back to generating some strikeouts he threw 92 pitches 58 strikes versus 34 balls I suppose you could say hey he was better than he had been lately the bar has been low he has not been pitching well as we have chronicled but even in a game in which he was doing well for a while he ends up giving up five runs and five and 2/3 Innings and so you have to say it's another disappointing outing for McKenzie Gore we've talked about what could be next you skip a start you send him to Triple A Rochester I do think that everything should be on the table but you know when you see him allow one run through five innings you say to yourself okay he can still be good here it's not like he's a complete mess incapable of pitching well but then of course it all falls apart in that Phillies 4run six and left to feeling as you felt going into the game yes it's a disappointing start and now it's nine out of the last 10 but I don't think this start is a cause for concern because of the one run through five innings and they're facing one of the best teams in baseball and the wheels came off in the sixth so overall I throw this one away it's just like not his best night now want this pattern to change and it's not great that his next start's going to be against the freaking Atlanta Braves but this wasn't you know six runs in two in the third Innings it wasn't but of course that's pretty bad when you do that I mean you know it says a lot about Gore season that there is a positive spin that you can put on five runs in five and two3 innings you know one run through five innings I wonder truly how tempted Dave Martinez was to pull Gore at that point I mean you want length from your starters at this point the bullpen is not in great shape right now there was Major Bullpen news for the Nets on Saturday we'll get to that in a bit but I wonder how much of Dave Martinez was compelled by the argument of Gore has been struggling he is allowed one run in five innings get him out now while the getting's good and again that's not what McKenzie Gore is supposed to be he's supposed to be an ace or a number two he's not supposed to be a guy who gives you five innings and then you want to get him out of there before he unravels but given the state of things for Gore I just wonder how moved by that notion David Martinez might have been so goral over last 10 starts has seen his erra for this regular season balloon from 326 to 466 he for this regular season has the worst whip among all qualified pitchers in the majors at 158 Patrick Corbin actually has the second worst whip at 157 and gor for this regular season continues to have the highest pitches per inning among all qualified pitchers in the majors at 18.73% Abrams there's enough time for Gore to get writed but we have been having this conversation about Gore for weeks if not months now and he has not gotten writed and what was such a good season for him in a lot of ways has fallen apart here I mean the possibility of him finishing this regular season with an RA over five is in play that ra now is at 466 and if things continue to go poorly that thing very easily could get Beyond five wow pretty unfathomable until you just kind of laid it out there in pling English cuz yeah that a month ago would have seemed impossible but we're heading that direction at this point because there is a little bit of positivity you could spin to this start I would have him take the mound in Atlanta next weekend I wouldn't send him to Rochester I wouldn't skip a start also the reality of if you do skip you do have to have someone else fill that though that shouldn't the reason should be McKenzie Gore not someone has to fill those five or six Innings but I wouldn't hit an emergency button just yet I would extend things another week I don't have a problem with really any scenario at this point I mean the Nats know this guy better than any of us do so you have to do what you think is right for him but you just hit on something that I do think is key the reason not to demote him to Triple A should not be well if we demote him we don't have another viable starting pitcher option at this point it doesn't matter what happens at the major league level in terms of wins and losses to be totally honest right like Gore's development should take precedent over once every 5 days you may be starting someone who you're not in love with starting so I think you have to look at it as okay in a vacuum what is best for the development of McKenzie Gore and the answer May well be to keep him at the major league level and have him continue to work through these struggles but to whatever degree demoting him to tripa is on the table the reason to not do it should not be because well we don't have another viable starting Pi you can always come up with someone and again wins and losses at this point take a backseat to the development of someone like MacKenzie Gore who is crucial in this Nats [Music] rebuild hi Nats fans this is Tim Newark DC area composer League report for the games played on Saturday in Rochester Dylan Cruz and Brady house each had a single a homer for Carter keyboom Stone Garrett one for four his Ops on the season is 681 and just a heads up in Wilmington right now on a rehab assignment is Robert Hassel theii he was placed on the ilil back on June 12th while playing with the Harrisburg Senators now back to the show pitch on the way to Abrams hit in the air to left easy play for Wilson coming in makes the catch shallow left and the game is over one pitch later so I mentioned that there was Major Bullpen news for the Nats on Saturday there was the Nats on Saturday afternoon announced a FLIR of roster moves regarding the bullpen principle among those moves the Nats putting reliever Derek law on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow flexor strain that is not a phrase that you like to hear with any pitcher right right elbow flexor strain because that can be a precursor to needing Tommy John surgery now the good news is that law does not seem to think that this is serious although what is often the case is that pitchers will tell you that an injury is not serious even if the injury might be serious but it sounds like this in fact may not be serious so hopefully that is in fact the case but this was not something that we were anticipating heck Derek law pitched on Friday evening he tossed a scoreless and hitless bottom of the eighth but it turns out that he was actually supposed to come out to pitch in the ninth but decided that discretion was the better part of all because he was not feeling entirely great and now he's on the 15-day iil with his right elbow flexor strain and that absolutely is a blow to this Bullpen we've talked about law struggles when it comes to inherited Runners this season but Derek LOF of this regular season as of games through Friday was number two among all Nats relievers in wins above replacement wor for baseball reference at 1.5 Dylan floro was number one at 1.6 LW was was number two at 1.5 he overall has done a good job for this team has eaten up a ton of innings has pitched in a ton of games you have to wonder if the workload is catching up to that right elbow at this point but now he's on the 15-day entered list also the NS on Saturday afternoon announced that they had put reliever Robert Garcia on the bereavement list we saw Garcia pitch on Friday evening he tossed the perfect bottom of the seventh and so the corresponding roster moves with an ANS announcing that they had selected the contract of reliever Joe loura from Triple A Rochester and the NS bringing Yan Adon back up to the majors from Rochester and we on Saturday evening saw both loura and theone pitch in this 5-1 loss at the Phillies and they actually ultimately did do a good job loura and adone combined for two and a third scoreless Innings those guys were the only two relievers used by the Nats in this game loura officially tossed a scoreless inning he did allow an inherited Runner to score he came into the game in the bottom of the six with Runners on first and second two outs and the dance down 4-1 loura to the first batter he faced gave up a two out Full Count RBI single by the Phillies number nine batter Johan roas to left center field for a 5-1 Phillies lead despite loura having had roas down in the count at 1.12 but adone actually was quite good he tossed one in a third perfect inning so overall good stuff from loura and theone but losing Derek law off theat Bullpen already having lost floro and Hunter Harvey by a trade although I know Harvey hasn't exactly killed it for the Kansas City Royals but not what this Bullpen needed right now Derek law being hurt is a problem let's get into some math this is a baseball podcast here the Nets have 55 wins so far this season last year they won 71 games if you want the team to end up with 72 wins or more from the standpoint of every year they're increasing their win total during this rebuild that would mean that they need seven more wins to get of course to 72 we have 38 games to go so they need to go 17 in 21 in the final 38 games to increase their win total this season compared to last year you get that a bullpen really really shallow and it's just Kyle finnean and you're trusting Yan ad Don to fill a lot of innings the rest of the way I don't know if we get those 17 wins yeah and the way Kyle finnean is pitching right now I don't know that you get those 17 wins um it's dicey and you know this coincides with the NAT starting pitching having faltered lately and not being as good as it was earlier in the season so it's a tough spot you know it's a rough go of it now if ever the offense was going to awaken and become better now is the time for that you know the pitching in so many ways has more than done its share this season the NS over the first I don't know 80 100 110 games whatever you want to call it got pitching that was surprisingly productive and it's over the last few weeks that the pitching has really started to falter and so you would say okay now it's time for the offense to pick up some of the slack and obviously that has not happened you know maybe when the NS call up Dylan Cruz you get a spark but you know it's tough and you know to the other recent call-ups you know guys like Juan YZ and Andre chaparo those guys can only do so much I mean you know YZ for a while was going really well he's calmed down you know remember he was hitting doubles left and right that has stopped he's not doing that right now they need to pick it up offensively you're not going to win every game 21 32 I'm sorry that's just not how it works so it's uh it's challenging right now I'm going to go to your side of the street here I'm going to further this answer speaking Washington Commander terms are you in Al can you you down with me I am down let's hear it Okay 201 started off pretty good that was the Rex grman team uh with John Beck right they had a good start to the SE season and then things happened and the wheels came off and they were terrible the rest of the way the key as someone who worked at ESPN I8 the time was I felt that Nothing Was the Same ever since Cory lonstein got hurt along the offensive line they couldn't replace him the line became a siiv everything fell apart from there I think Derek law is the Cory lonstein of the 2024 Washington Nationals well Derek law is the Corey lion Steiger oh I I botched the name sorry okay it's a tough one you know that may sound like an insult but uh lien Steiger actually was a pretty good Center for Washington for a while so I don't I don't think that's an insult in any way I think that's actually a compliment yeah look law has done a good job and if you go by War he's actually been more valuable than Kyle Finnegan this season so this hurts I hope law is back soon I hope he is right in how he spoke of his injury but I just know that we've danced this dance with a lot of guys and you hear flexor strain and that many times is not an indication of good things to come but we'll see it's not always an indication of something bad to come so just got to hope for the best with Derek law so yeah the Nats are in danger of being victimized by the Phillies to the tune of a four game Sweep game four this series Sunday afternoon at 1:35 Jake Irvin will be the dad starting pitcher Irvin has been up and down lately but uh to his credit has not like completely Fallen apart so you know the idea of him coming out and pitching well on Sunday afternoon certainly he not that farfetched Irvin in his last outing the n three win at the Orioles this past Tuesday evening was good albeit for just the third time over his last seven starts but irvan in that game two runs in six Innings so certainly capable of pitching well at the Phillies but uh you got to go out and do it and Philadelphia just is having its way with the Nationals so far in this series this game on Saturday evening was supposed to be a 605 first pitch ended up being a 635 first pitch now the game was Lightning Fast 2 hours 6 minutes but I bring up the starting time scenario because incredibly something that happened last season ended up happening again this season and that is a Nationals game at the Phillies being delayed substantially by pregame festivities yeah it's because of the wall of fame ceremony at Citizens Bank Park second year in a row as you just said I have a problem with this because the first pitch was not till 635 and it was built as a 605 start there are people out there major league baseball pH Philadelphia Phillies that want to watch the games and if the first pitch is until 6:35 tell them that that way they can make plans accordingly whether it's TV radio internet Etc the wall of fame ceremony is a hyper local thing that's great I understand why they want to have it and I get what the Phillies are doing they want as big a crowd as possible but at a certain point that's on you to advertise in your local media and let the word know that like hey the ceremonies at 6 o'clock and first pitch is at 6:35 I think the Nationals fans keep getting a raw deal on this one and I'd like for it to discontinue I wonder how much of this is the Phillies taking their time with the ceremony so they say well we we're planning on a 6:05 p.m. start but you know if the ceremony goes long it might not be exactly at 6:05 and you take your time with the ceremony and you perhaps frustrate and aggravate the gats and you frustrate and aggravate the opposing team and so perhaps there's some gamesmanship going on there you can always email the podcast Nats chat podcast at gmail.com we got this email from John writes John I'm a Nationals season ticket holder from the very beginning and I greatly appreciate being able to virtually commiserate with Al Mark and Tim on the Nats chat podcast the only time I allow myself to use the diminutive term gats wow not a fan of the nickname Nats continues John I am on vacation in Algeria I thought that you'd want to see me at timad standing in front of Tran's Arch of Triumph thanking RZ and the learners for bringing back the entire Nationals coaching staff for next season after another Dreadful season of Bad defense egregious base running and fewer homers than the League worst Chicago White Socks I am on the road as it were Nationals games usually don't begin until after 11 over here but at least I can wake up to an honest cleare eyed and intelligent autopsy of the Nationals latest loss from your podcast which DC franchise will finish its rebuild first the Wizards who are the Nationals sincerely John uh John that is an outstanding email so thank you very much happy and safe travels to you look the Wizards rebuild probably is not going to be done until 2045 okay with the way that they're tanking and by the way I think the Wizards are doing exactly what they should be doing but the Wizards are going to be bad for quite some time the Nationals hopefully are going to bust out next season we'll see if that happens but I still would bet on the gats rebuild finishing sooner than the Wizards rebuild but I get the question John I do yeah and uh he touches on something that I agree with um I do not agree with the decision by the Nationals to bring back the coaching staff in mid- August didn't think we were there don't think Darnell Kohl deserves such an early guarantee of job security uh that's a serious answer to what was a fantastic email there props on the composition really appreciate the time you obviously put in the that one but when he lays it out and he talks about the defense and the base running I have no push back to any of that no I I don't get why the coaching staff had to be Reed this soon if you want to say hey we really like these guys and you want to bring them back okay why couldn't you have done that at the end of this season after you see how this season plays out my problem isn't necessarily with the Nats bringing these coaches back my problem is with the Nats bringing these coaches back so soon it would not have hurt you at all to have waited another few weeks it's not like these guys are in high demand understand what happened here these guys were presented with contracts to come back for next season and these guys all signed those contracts what does that tell you about what these guys think about their options beyond the Nets that these guys so quickly sign those contracts I think that says a lot so I think you could have waited a bit and and not have really been at Major risk of losing any of these guys so we'll see I hope the Nats don't come to regret doing that maybe they won't maybe they won't but I just don't see what the harm would have been in Waiting you tell us what you think if you have a great email like our friend John send it to us Nats chat podcast gmail.com you can also hit us up on xnore chat you can find us on our website too
