Intro it's only normal that there's skepticism of Plenty about the soon to be out HB original city of God the fight rages on if you're a fan of the 2002 city of God You' know how much of its Edge would need to be blunted for the spin-off to be palatable in today's time if Fernando meles and Kya lon's film was condemned for overe exploitation of violent themes back when people had stronger stomachs the world's certainly not ready for something in the same line now but there's a silver lining in city of God getting a spin-off series under a banner as reliable as HBO and Max it's been a while since the original Masterpiece has been a part of the Zeitgeist so if it takes an HBO original to bring it back to the Forefront again aside from the fact that this is the reason a whole new wave of appreciation might be heading city of God's way it's sort of a win already now would be the best time to remember the gunpowder stinking FAA a place forsaken by God in rotario a spoiler chicken are literally caught between a gang and the cops to explain how this nerve-wracking situation came to be a protagonist rocket takes us on a blood soaked trip through a few Decades of his life in the fava when we're in the' 60s with an adolescent rocket we get to know this place as the rug that the homeless of Rio jario have been swept under there's no electricity no roads and no hope back then teenage delinquents Shaggy Clipper and Rocket's brother Goose made up the tender Trio a robin hoodes gang that robbed the poor and helped out the even poorer in exchange for their silence and protection they weren't really Killers to start with given the shackles such a life can put on dreams they can hardly even be blamed for their way of life One Fine Day this little kid with Big Ideas crawling in his head proposed they rob a CD Motel little dice the kid with an itch to go bigger when it came to crime was supposed to send them a signal when the cops arrived they did get the signal and hurried out but there were no cops and little dice was nowhere to be found so they figured that the cops grabbed the kid and seeing as they discussed that there'd be no killing and all the hostages were found dead after they'd left they thought the cops gunned the people down so that they could pin the crimes on the tender Trio I'll come back to the the truth about this whole thing later with the cops on their tail goo stayed behind while Clipper and Shaggy went into the woods and climbed up a tree up on the tree as they listened to the dirty cops planning to Rob them when they caught them a terrified Clipper almost had a moment of Enlightenment that compelled him to leave the gang life behind so he walked straight to the church the next morning and he walked with such an air of boldness that the cop in front of him didn't even suspect him of belonging to the tender Trio no wonder people had no faith in the law the cop shot an innocent kid just because he wasn't as Brave as Clipper and ran when he saw a cop running toward him with a gun there was even mention of the cop hiding his murder of a civilian by planting evidence that would make him look like one of the hoodlums after that shaggi shacked up with Bernice and when she urged him to get away from the horror show that was the flla he jumped on board Shaggy and Bernice hijacked a car and while Bernice Got Away shaggi was shot and killed by the cops the Mortal Massacre had brought the media to the favilla wickedly enough when rocket saw a photojournalist click pictures of shaggi's cops he fell in love with the idea of holding a camera in his hands Rocket's brother Goose had another thing going at that time you see when the tendo Trio had been running from the CPS their car had accidentally mowed down shorty store that's why shorty had sold them out to the cops likely for payback Goose seduced Shorty's wife and in a fit of rage shorty bashed his wife with a shovel and buried her alive Goose ran for his life while the cops rumag through his house while his parents and little brother rocket watch helplessly what happened to Goose well that's where little dice's story comes in even at that tender age little dice was a trigger happy Maniac he'd be the one to kill the people at the motel so the tender Trio would have to disband and he'd be in charge he'd been lying low and robbing places with his buddy Benny ever since and when Goose found them totally oblivious to the kind of brutality little dice was capable of he was shot dead by the kid so that was it for the tender Trio and after they were gone on the throne of the favella was up for grabs little Z's crime dynasty in Li’l Ze’s Crime Dynasty the' 70s rocket was teaming with life a knack for taking photographs of the group of hippes he'd befriended and the desire to lose his vCard to Angelica but Angelica had a boyfriend and even though she did end up dumping him Rock had made the mistake of taking Angelica to a hood party to look cool Benny now the coolest Hood in the ghetto instantly snatched Angelica's attention and the two hit it off things weren't going great in career either he got a job at the supermarket and just because he was nice to the Children's Group who were notorious for robbing places he lost his job that too without pay rocket figured that there was no way to earn an honest living in his circumstances but rocket and his friends chinji were total softies they planned to rob a bus only to melt and change their minds because the bus conductor knockout Ned was sweet to them they thought they'd rob a bakery but guess what rocket got all hearty for the cute waitress and walked out with her number instead even when they tried to rob a guy from sa Paulo a place they had unpleasant preconceived notions about all they did was roll a j with the paper where the waitress had put down her number and passed it around among themselves fortunately though rocket did back a job at a newspaper company you know who was absolutely killing it at all things criminal little dice now going by little Z and holding the ghetto at the top of his battle he robbed and killed and Unleashed his Terror until the ghetto covered but the most power he wielded was through his jug game with Benny by his side the fear of Dying by Lil Z's bullet was what kept the small timers in check and the residents of the ghetto were thankful for the peace there was another player in the game though karat ran his drug trade from the apartment which had once been home to a predatory Widow and had then passed through multiple hands until he showed up being tied with Benny was the only thing that protected car and his under boss Blackie from Little Z but that doesn't mean that little Z was happy to share the truck game Carr's weakness was how soft he was on the runs a group of kids who were a nuisance for the people on his side of the ghetto to show who was in charge the monal Lil Z went as far as shooting two kids from the runs in their feet and having stake the kid who worked for him shoot one of them Lil Z had initially seemed fine with Benny wanting to move away from the flla with his girlfriend Angelica but his insecurities crept in on the night of Benny's farewell sadly in a scuffle between Benny and little Z which hardly had anything to do with the camera that Benny wanted to give to Rocket Benny was accidentally shot by Blackie Blacky was aiming for lzy but his mistake caused carrot his safety in the ghetto and he shot Blackie for killing Benny knockout Knockout Ned Vs. Li’l Ze Ned versus little Z little Z was not a great character let alone a dark hero it was as if he was born with this rage inside him that only grew exponentially with time he was devoid of empathy morals righteousness or even the ability to question his heinous actions Benny was the only thing holding in him back to some extent and with Benny gone l z now had no one who tell him he was wrong about something he was wildly insecure about his looks so after he'd been turned down by a girl at Benny's party and he humiliated her boyfriend who happened to be knockout Ned he found them again this time knockout Ned was beaten up and forced to watch little Z rape his girlfriend that was in the end of the hell knockout Ned had to endure when his little brother stabbed Little Z the wildhood and his men shot up the entire house and Ked killed the kid and their Uncle knockout Ned was pushed too far and he chose to side with the only guy who had the guts to stand up against little Z there was a war brewing and to mount a strong defense carrot and knockout Net's team needed money in between the robberies and the necessary Defiance of knockout Nets we don't kill the innocent rule it was only a matter of time before the warvet who was a skilled shot exhausted the last few ounces of righteousness he had left little Z wasn't taking the war lightly it only grieved him that the media only focused on knockout Ned in a weird way his urge to have his face in the Limelight is what determined the course of Rocket's career as a photo journalist he was handed the camera that Benny wanted him to have and with it he clicked pictures of little Z's gang showing off their guns rocket was understandably terrified for his life when one of his superiors Marina featured them on the front page of their newspaper little Z loved the attention and Rocket didn't really have anything to worry about but it sort of worked out in his best interest as the only photographer with actual access into the ghetto he was given a camera which was a major upgrade from the one he had and as a sweet little bonus he even got to lose his virginity to Marina when she' invited him to stay at her place as it usually happens with Wars the war between little Z and carot and knockout Ned's team raged on even after the people had forgotten why it had started in the first place kids were recruited by both gangs only for them to lie dead in the street the next day in between all that knockout Ned was arrested and similar to the real life clip that plays made credits he spoken to the media about the cop's bias the Fate defining mistake little Z made in the war was screwing with the weapons dealer who worked for the corrupt cops he didn't see his end coming when he organized a feast and handed guns to the runs so they could fight on his side that's the hoopla that the film opened with when we go back to the scene where rocket is stuck between an imminent gunfight between the cops and L Z's gang his lives only saved because the cops realized that they're both outnumbered and outgunned knockout net and carrots group take advantage of this vulnerable moment to cash l z off guard knockout Net's close enough to taste victory before a past mistake comes back to haunt him uto this little kid who joined knockout Net's group to avenge his father's murder didn't actually mean that little Z was his father's killer he was honest about his motivation behind joining the war all the while waiting for the right opportunity to kill knockout Ned you see ot's father was the security guard at the bank who was shot by knockout Ned when they were robbing the place and now that Oto has been shot and is about to die he makes his last moment count by killing knockout Ned with one shot the circumstances leave ly and carrot vulnerable enough to be captured by the cops and Rocket like a true photojournalist taking risks for a fiery scoop follows the cops with his professional camera he captures carrot ending up media bait but his biggest scoop lies elsewhere the cops Jin little Z of his funds in exchange for letting him go unharmed but little Z thinks he owns the world so he majorly overestimates the run's loyalty to him when he asks for the help to rebuild the drug business from scratch when the runs perforate L Z's body with bullets they're not necessarily doing it to avenge the murder of one of their own if we're being candid Lil's murder is more about what the runs were discussing earlier in the film they were talking about how the whole drug game was rigged and how the only scope to rise was the death of someone powerful in the hierarchy they have now killed the Kingpin and taken over the entire ghetto and scarily enough the plan of making a blacklist of dealers they want to kill proves that they're no better than little Z rocket plays it safe when he decides not to mess with the cops by submitting the pictures he clicked of them taking bribes from Little Z instead he pushes the picture of little Z lying in a pool of his own blood and that earns him the internship at the newspaper what to expect from the series What To Expect From The Series? a lots changed in the two decades that stand between the timeline of the original city of God and the HBO spin-off that's directed by Ali moriba Fernando meles is a attached to the project but he's a producer this time around it's a whole new world both in the context of the flla that a now old Rocket returns in and the political landscape of the world the flla is currently in he's still frustrated trying to get people to call him Wilson the name he picked for himself at the end of city of God and since he's now in a world where the plight of black people is at least a part of the political discourse even if nothing constructive is done about it activists and protesters are a thing in the flla but not to worry it's still a Haven for the drug lords and the criminals that run the show and one of them happens to be the leader of the runs yep you've seen him before he's the kid who led his group into killing little Z but is rocket the same almost stoic photojournalist who built his own career on a pile of corpses not if is a strange daughter has anything to say about it he's bound to feel a sense of cynicism over the moral implications of his career as you'd expect the government sanctioned goons in the form of the military are only focused on Curbing the protests against the dismissal of the FLL pain while the fight for the control of the drug trade still renders the flla a chaotic place where bodies turn up on a daily basis with rocket and characters old and new we dropped in the thick of this explosive power struggle in city of God the fight rages on thank
